Travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong is becoming easier, with nine border points currently available along with two new high speed train station cross border points.

This article gives an overview of those border crossing possibilities, in an effort to make it easier to cross.

To travel between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, passengers need to pass through customs at one of 11 "ports" or border control areas.

The two busiest ports of entry to Hong Kong are the Luohu Border Crossing and the Huanggang Border Crossing. However, and probably in explanation of why they are the busiest, these two border crossings have direct access to the Hong Kong subway on the Hong Kong side.

It is also important to note that a new train between Kowloon West and Shenzhen's Futian Border opened in 2018.

How to Travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen by High Speed Train, Metro, and Ferry

travel shenzhen to hong kong

Hong Kong and Shenzhen are two bustling metropolises, each with millions of residents and separated by a small river and international border. Travel between the two cities is both simple and complicated, since direct high-speed trains can make the journey in as little as 15 minutes—if you have the correct visa. The most important factor to determine what method you take depends on if you get your Chinese visa before arriving in Hong Kong or if you need a Visa on Arrival to China.

The high-speed train is the fastest method of travel between cities, but you'll need a valid Chinese visa before boarding the train (in other words, you need to obtain a visa in your country of origin). If you haven't planned ahead, you can also receive a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at special entry points that allows visitors to stay in Shenzhen for five days.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

You can take the Hong Kong metro (MTR) from any part of the city to the border with Shenzhen, and this method can be used by visitors who already have a valid Chinese visa or who need a VOA. You need to get to the East Rail Line of the metro (or light blue line) and ride it all the way to one of the last two stops—Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau. If you're coming from the center of Hong Kong, the trip takes about an hour to get to the border and costs 100$HKD (about $13). It's less expensive if you have an Octopus Card , or Hong Kong subway pass. Once you enter Shenzhen, you'll need to pay for the VOA if you don't already have one in addition to the fare for the Shenzhen metro. Both of these additional costs must be paid for in Chinese yuan and Hong Kong dollars will not be accepted.

If you need the VOA, Lo Wu is the more convenient location to choose because you can arrive on the metro, get your visa, and hop on the Shenzhen metro all within the same vicinity. If you take the metro to Lok Ma Chau and you need a VOA, you'll have to walk about 10 minutes to another office—Huanggang—to get the visa and there is no Shenzhen metro at that building.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

A high-speed train connects the futuristic West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong with Shenzhen in as little as 15 minutes. The two stations in Shenzhen are Futian and Shenzhenbei, and Futian is the main stop in the center of the city and most likely to be your destination. The exact price varies based on the exchange rate between the Hong Kong dollar and the Chinese yuan, but it's roughly $10 for a one-way ticket in second class. There are over 80 trains each day that make the route with trains leaving every five to 10 minutes. Not all trains stop in Futian, so make sure you confirm the route before boarding.

Before you get on the train, you'll pass through security and immigration in the Hong Kong station just like at an airport. There's no way to get a VOA if you are taking the high-speed train, so you'll already need a valid visa to enter Mainland China. These visas must be obtained in your country of residence so if you don't already have one, you don't be able to use the high-speed train to get to Shenzhen.

Is There a Ferry That Goes From Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

The ferry is the most expensive method for getting to Shenzhen and takes nearly as long as the metro, but taking a ride on the water is undeniably the most fun way to travel between the cities. Several companies offer ferry service leaving from the Hong Kong Macau Terminal located near the popular Victoria Harbour, and it takes about an hour to reach Shekou Port on the Shenzhen side. Ticket prices vary based on the company you choose and the type of ticket, but the cheapest fares start at about $20.

Shekou Port does offer VOA to visit Shenzhen, so visitors who haven't obtained a Chinese visa prior to the trip are able to take the ferry to Shenzhen without worry.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Shenzhen?

The most comfortable time to visit Shenzhen is from autumn through early spring. Just as with Hong Kong, the city experiences a sub-tropical climate and winter temperatures are pleasantly warm. In the summer months—roughly May to September—high temperatures are made even more unbearable by the oppressive humidity.

All of China also celebrates two week-long vacations known as Golden Week , first for Chinese New Year in late January or early February and then again in early October for National Day. During these popular travel periods, people are on the move all across the country, meaning that hotels and transit are usually booked up. If you're traveling during either Golden Week or National Day, make sure to confirm your reservations as early as possible.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Shenzhen?

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China and is treated as a separate country for all intents and purposes, so even though U.S. citizens can travel to Hong Kong without a visa, you will need one to enter Shenzhen in Mainland China. Getting a Chinese visa in the U.S. can be a headache and requires quite a few steps, but if you know your trip to Hong Kong is going to include an excursion to Shenzhen, it's usually worth the effort to do it in advance. For one, if you get a Chinese visa from your local consulate in the U.S., it will last you for multiple trips over a 10-year period while the Visa on Arrival is only good for visiting Shenzhen—and nowhere else—for five days. Also, you'll pay the same price regardless of which you get, so you're getting much more for your money's worth with the 10-year visa.

But for travelers who weren't able to get a visa beforehand or who prefer the simplicity of the VOA, make sure you enter Shenzhen at one of the VOA border crossings, such as the Lo Wu metro station or the Shekou Port ferry stop. You'll need your passport and the entry slip you received when entering Hong Kong, as well as the application fee in cash in Chinese yuan—not Hong Kong dollars. The process is usually quick and shouldn't take more than 10–20 minutes, but if you're traveling on a weekend or holiday, delays are possible. It's important to remember that the VOA is only valid for visiting Shenzhen; if you want to visit other parts of Mainland China, you'll need to obtain a Chinese visa in your country of residence.

Visa requirements, rules, and fees frequently change. Confirm the most up-to-date policies and prices before you head to the border.

What Is There to Do in Shenzhen?

Many people love to cross the border and visit Shenzhen for shopping, since prices are much lower than in neighboring Hong Kong. Whether you're looking for clothing, electronics, jewelry, or anything else, you can find it in this megacity. The Luohu Commercial City is one of the largest shopping centers in the city, and it's conveniently located next to Hong Kong at the Lo Wu border crossing. Since Shenzhen is a relatively new city—growing from a small seaside town to a city of 12 million in just the last few decades—there isn't a lot of history, but the city more than makes up for it with cultural offerings such as the Splendid Chinese Folk Village. And even though Hong Kong is a food mecca, Shenzhen offers its own culinary treats with plenty of delicious Cantonese restaurants to try.

The best way to get to Shenzhen from Hong Kong Airport is to take the ferry. It takes 30 minutes and costs $27 for an economy adult ticket.

A taxi from Shenzhen to Hong Kong costs around 750 yuan ($114).

You can take the Hong Kong metro (MTR) to the border with Shenzhen. You need to get to the East Rail Line of the metro (or light blue line) and ride it all the way to one of the last two stops—Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau. The trip takes about an hour from the center of Hong Kong to get to the border and costs $100 Hong Kong dollars (about $13).

So whether you live in HK or you’re just visiting, hopping over to Shenzhen is worth the trip. It’s pretty easy to get there but there are a few different methods you can choose from. So, we’ve done the research for you and shared all you need to know to visit Shenzhen from HK.

First things first — visas

To assist with the economic growth of Shenzhen and encourage tourist and business travel, the city has been labelled as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and gets its own set of special visa requirements as a result. Visitors can obtain a 5 day single-entry visa upon arrival (at certain entry ports). No preparation is required, you just need to carry a valid passport (with a minimum of 3 months validity and some blank pages) and complete a form upon arrival with the cost of the visa varying depending on nationality.

This visa will only allow you to travel within Shenzhen and the entry ports where it can be obtained are; Huanggang Port, Luohu Port (LoWu), Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport and Shekou Ferry Port. If you’re entering the city from HK via one of the ports that does not support the visa on arrival (VOA) option, you need to apply for a regular China visa before you leave, which will allow you to continue travelling in China should you choose. You can either do this in your home country before you arrive or at several agencies across HK. It should also be noted that each entry port has different opening hours so make sure you check these ahead of time before you travel.

High speed rail (fastest)

Adult: HK$ 74.00 – HK$ 82.00 Child: HK$ 37.00 – HK$ 41.00 (second class, one way) 14-18 minutes West Kowloon Station. To: Either Futian or Shenzhenbei

Operating since 2018, the high speed railway offers the speed without racking up the prices. Departing from the HK West Kowloon Railway station to either Futian (14 minutes) or Shenzhenbei (18 minutes), the trains leave HK roughly every 5 minutes and tickets will cost you less than HK$ 100.00 . Tickets can be purchased at the station or in advance on the China railway website . Whilst this option is certainly the fastest, visas on arrival are not available at either Futian or Shenzhenbei station so you must organise your China visa beforehand, which can somewhat take away from the convenience of the speedy train.

MTR (most convenient)

Adult: HK$ 50.80 Child: HK$ 25.40 (one way, with Octopus card) Approx 1 – 1.5 hours From: downtown HK (e.g Central / Wan Chai). To: Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau

MTR

Probably the most straightforward of all the options (other than a private car), the East Rail Line of the HK MTR will take you directly to either Lo Wu station, where you can enter Shenzhen at the Luohu port or Lok Ma Chau station for the Futian port. Accessing the MTR is easy in HK, just dive into your nearest station and head towards Admiralty (HK island), Hung Hom (Kowloon) or Tai Wai (New Territories) to connect to the East Rail line.

Choosing which station to get off the train just depends where you want to end up in Shenzhen. Luohu is one of the most popular tourist destinations with the huge Luohu Commercial City shopping centre right as you exit immigration, as well as the easy connections to the Shenzhen Metro. Futian port is a better entry place for certain hotels and is also well connected to the metro so just work out where you want to be first before you decide.

Bus (slowest)

Approx HK$ 44.00 — HK$ 201.00 (adult, one way) Approx 1-4 hours From: 25 stations across HK, including the HK International Airport and downtown. To: 12 stations in Shenzhen

The bus is potentially one of the cheapest options (depending on where you get on and off it) but it’s also the slowest. The journey can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours and fares also vary depending on the departure point. Ticket prices and bus schedules are regularly updated and can be found on the Trans Island Bus Company website.

Buses begin departing from 6:15am and there are numerous destinations within Shenzhen to choose from including; Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, Window of the World Shenzhen Bay Port and Shenzhenbei. If you’re looking to do your visa on arrival though, you need to get off at either Huanggang Port or Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. You can also book your trip to and from Shenzhen online from HK$ 50.00 with more limited departure and arrival points.

Boat (expensive)

HK$ 136.00 — HK$ 448.00 (adult, one way) 1 hour From: Either HK Airport, or HK Macau Ferry Terminal. To: Shekou Cruise Center or Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport

The boat could be a good option for those getting off a plane in HK and wanting to go straight to Shenzhen or for those who simply prefer travelling by sea. Passengers have the option to board at either HK airport or at the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung wan on HK island, but the ferry from the Macau ferry terminal only goes to the Shekou Cruise Center. Visas on arrival can be processed at either entry port so where you choose depends on where you want to continue to after you arrive.

The sailing time is about an hour and it’s a pretty straight forward journey. With tickets ranging from HK$ 136.00 — HK$ 448.00 (depending on ticket class), it is one of the most expensive options so it just depends on your budget.

HK Taxi (expensive)

Approx HK$ 400.00 (depends on journey duration) round 1 hour From: HK International Airport taxi stand. To: HK taxis can only go to the HK/Shenzhen border at either Huanggang or Lok Ma Chau

Hong Kong taxi to shenzhen

Cheaper than a private car but still offering a similar level of comfort and convenience, passengers can opt to pick up a taxi from HK airport. Taxis are not permitted to cross the border though so you are limited to which ports you can enter.

Private Car/Transfer (most expensive)

Approx HK$ 800.00 – HK$ 2,000.00 (prices vary per operator) Around 1 hour From: Anywhere you want. To: Any of the immigration points

Typically recommended for those on business trips, the private car option is definitely the most expensive but it does mean that you can be picked up from any location you choose and can choose your own schedule, too. Various operators are available with multiple car sizes on offer too depending on the group of your party. This private transfer through Klook is available from HK$ 958.00 depending on starting point.

No messages.

Though separated from Hong Kong by the 37km-long Sham Chun River, Shenzhen is just an easy train, bus or car ride away. As of 2023, there are six major cross-boundary checkpoints, and you can reach them by public transport from almost anywhere in Hong Kong. Take your pick!

Before putting together your itinerary, however, make sure you pay attention to the English translations and romanisations of checkpoint names; they may vary depending on whether they’re phonetically romanised from Putonghua or Cantonese. For example, Lo Wu (Cantonese) could also be spelled as Luo Hu (Putonghua); while Shenzhenbei (Putonghua) is also Shenzhen North. The best way to avoid making mistakes is simply to pull out a map and double check the location.

From the airport

Inbound travellers heading to Shenzhen via Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) may be tempted to hop onto a transfer flight, but since the two cities are so close in proximity, direct flights are nil. Instead, take advantage of our seamless air-to-sea transfers .

You can book a combined flight and ferry ticket with us, as you would any other Cathay Pacific ticket – simply enter Shenzhen Shekou Cruise Home Port (ZYK) or Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal (FYG) as your destination.* Both your flight and ferry will be under one booking, and your luggage will be checked through to your destination.

Upon arrival at HKIA, go directly to Transfer Area E2 to collect your ferry ticket and board your ferry at the SkyPier. The service to Shekou runs roughly every 1-2 hours and takes only 30 minutes, while there are four ferries to Shenzhen Airport each day, getting you there in around 50 minutes.

Don’t have strong sea legs? You can instead hop onto a cross-boundary coach service at the Mainland Transport Centre at Terminal 1. These coaches can take you to ports like Huanggang, Sha Tau Kok, Shenzhen Bay and Heung Yuen Wai as well as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai Port.

From the city by highspeed railway

If you want both speed and affordability, your best bet is to travel to Shenzhen by high-speed train. As of 14 August 2023, trains run as frequently as every five minutes from the Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station to either Futian – which takes 14 minutes – or Shenzhenbei – an 18-minute ride – or both. Tickets can be purchased in-person at the station, or in advance on the Railway12306 website or app, available on iOS and Android . However, please note that tickets bought on Railway12306 require identity verification with a Mainland Chinese phone number or in-person at the station, and the English booking site and app are only applicable for valid foreign passports. Learn more here .

The first train departs at 7.03am and the last at 10.35pm. Fares are set in RMB, so the price in Hong Kong dollars may fluctuate according to conversion rates. However, a second-class adult ticket generally ranges from HK$75-85; while a first-class ticket costs HK$119-131: those additional dollars get you your own reading light and audio output that connects to in-train music and TV channels.

From the city by MTR or bus

The northernmost stations on Hong Kong’s MTR East Rail Line – Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau – will take you straight to a Shenzhen cross-boundary checkpoint.  Lo Wu checkpoint  closes at midnight and  Lok Ma Chau Spur Line checkpoint  closes at 10.30pm.

Passengers may also opt to use the Hong Kong-Zhuhai Macao Bridge clearance point, reachable via  “A” route airport buses  operated by Citybus, New Lantau Bus and Long Win bus services.

Night owls, meanwhile, can catch  shuttle buses and coaches  that connect to Shenzhen’s Huanggang from Lok Ma Chau (both 24-hour ports) or from convenient urban locations like Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Wan Chai, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, Tin Shui Wai and Kam Sheung Road. Fares and timetables differ depending on location.

From the city by private pick-up

If you’re looking for an even more convenient option, it’s worth looking into private companies offering ride services around your neighbourhood. Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings can get you to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, or Lo Wu, Shenzhen Bay, or Huanggang from various pick-up points in the city, ranging from Hong Kong Disneyland to K11 Musea. Shopping malls like Elements and Citigate Outlets also have their own cross-border coaches that run to various ports in Shenzhen.

Private car hires are also available: SkyLimo ’s door-to-door deluxe service comes complete with your own English-speaking chauffeur. Since 2023, Hong Kong residents who are the registered owners of their cars can apply to drive across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai Bridge . This privilege, however, only extends to non-commercial private cars with eight or fewer seats – including the driver’s – and which are shorter than six metres in length. The vehicle must have all vehicle licences and permits relevant to both Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland; it can only stay for 30 consecutive days upon entry and no more than 180 days within a year.

* If you’re departing from Taiwan China, you’ll need to book your flight ticket with us and your ferry ticket via the ferry operator. Before dropping your bags at your departing airport, please let us know that you’ve purchased tickets separately and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.

Located just north of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a fast-growing metropolis with great shopping and sightseeing. To get to Shenzhen, you will need to cross an immigration checkpoint. The easiest way to get there from the main city is to take a train or ferry directed to a border checkpoint. If you are going to Shenzhen directly from Hong Kong airport, choose from a variety of options, including cross-border coaches and taxis. Remember that you will need a passport to cross the border and possibly even a visa.

Traveling from the City

Step 1 Take the East Line train for direct transport to the border.

  • The cost of the ticket can vary based on the station you got on the train and whether it is peak hours or not. The ticket typically costs around $40 HKD ($5 USD).
  • Purchase tickets in advance here: http://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/st/index.php .
  • The immigration checkpoint you choose depends on where you want to go and how much time you have. Lok Ma Chau has shorter lines but Lo Wu is closer to the main shopping district.

Step 2 Board a ferry from Hong Kong Central for quick transportation.

  • The cost of a ferry ticket is $140 HKD ($18 USD). This makes a pricier option, but it is convenient if you need to go to the Shekou area of Shenzhen.
  • Customs at this ferry terminal tend to be quicker than other immigration checkpoints.

Step 3 Pay an authorized cross-border hire car to take you across.

  • You can find a list of authorized hire car services here: http://www.td.gov.hk/en/transport_in_hong_kong/land_based_cross_boundary_transport/enquiries_on_cross_boundary_hire_car_service/index.html .
  • Depending on the service, you may need to hire these cars in advance.

Leaving from Hong Kong Airport

Step 1 Board a cross-border coach from the airport.

  • There are several different companies that offer various different destinations and prices. Talk to the agents at the desk to find a coach going to your destination.

Step 2 Buy a ferry ticket when you leave the plane.

  • There are 2 ferries that leave from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen. The first takes you to Shekou Terminal, and the other goes to Fuyong terminal, which is attached to the Shenzhen airport.
  • A ticket to Shekou terminal costs $220 HKD (roughly $28 USD). This trip lasts 30 minutes.
  • A ticket to Fuyong Terminal costs $295 HKD ($38 USD). It will take 40 minutes to reach the mainland.

Step 3 Take the A43 bus to Sheng Shui Train station to get on the East Line train.

  • The bus fare is usually around $30 HKD ($4 USD). It takes about 90 minutes to reach the train station.
  • Train fare is $20 HKD ($2.50 USD). It takes about 20 minutes to reach the border.

Step 4 Take a taxi directly to the border for a faster route.

  • The Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang Crossing is the most popular. It is open 24 hours a day.
  • The Shenzhen Bay Crossing is usually a much faster option. It is open from 6:30 am to 12:00 am.

Crossing the Border

Step 1 Apply for a Chinese Visitor’s visa before your trip for the fastest entry.

  • If you are already in Hong Kong, visit the Chinese Foreign Ministry and apply in person. It will take you 4 days to get a visa, although some nationalities can pay for faster service. The cost of this visa will depend on your nationality. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Apply for a 5-day Shenzhen visa at the border for a last minute trip.

  • The fees for this visa depend on your country of origin.

Step 3 Wait in the line for foreigners to clear immigration.

  • You will be asked to declare any gifts, alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, radio transmitters, and cash over 20,000 RMB ($3,000) when you pass through customs. [13] X Research source

Step 5 Board public transport on the other side of the border.

  • At Lo Wu (sometimes called Luo Hu) station, you can board another train as soon as you leave customs.
  • From Shenzhen Bay Crossing, hire a taxi.
  • At Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang, look for buses leaving for various parts of Shenzhen as well as taxis.
  • At Futian, board the Metro, which stops just outside of the checkpoint.
  • At Shekou Ferry Terminal, catch a bus or taxi. You can also get on a shuttle to take you to the closest Metro stop. [14] X Research source
