24 Modern Interior Ideas For RVs & Campers (With Pictures)

' src=

We have remodeled to campers over the last 3-4 years. It’s amazing how you can transform a camper into a modern living space with few hacks and tricks.

These are the best inspirational ideas we found during the modern interior make-over of our two campers!

It’s a mix of ideas from our own two RVs, RVs we have filmed during the years, and other great ideas.

Table of Contents

Campervans and smaller RVs have become increasingly popular over the last decade.

More and more people are becoming geographically independent and life on the road part-time or full-time. We have heard about this change and the newspapers and local RV resellers. This means that more and more young people are choosing to live in campervans or tents .

Let’s take a look at some of those modern camper vans that have been rebuilt till look amazing.

Bright Colors For A Modern Feel

Let take a look at some good examples of brilliant use of colors in campers.

Here’s a good example of this with modern gray, white, and green colors around the seating area. The top shelves and the wood around the top of the curtains are just perfect in this camper.

Everything is so neat, and the green colors are a fresh touch when blended into the white interior .

As soon as you get rid of the dark and yellow surfaces you can start working toward a more modern and bright color palette.

This is always a good idea for small spaces as they will feel more spacious and bigger when you chose bright colors.

In the example below, they basically painted everything white and built up some new stories and shelving areas.

travel trailer inside

This is also a great example of how easy you can open up space by painting everything white. Just keep a couple of wooden colors here and there to create some contrast.

Let’s take a look at what we came up with for our own camper remodeling projects.

We started out with a tiny vintage camper from the ’70s and the idea was to turn it into a clean and minimalistic living space. It started out as a yellow and worn down camper and after a year and a lot of sweat and tears this is what it looked like:

Inside our tiny camper wagon

We eventually sold the old tiny camper when we had Max who is 2 years old now. At that point, we really needed to be able to close the door between his nursery and our living space.

When we removed the old yellow and dark shelves we had the opportunity to do something else with the walls. We chose to have white walls with light blue colors on the wallpaper.

The back of the table is covered with the same wallpaper as the wall and you can see it to the right on the image above. It totally blends in with the wallpaper when it’s folded up.

Here you can see the table when folded down. We chose light blue colors because they are “cold” colors and we prefer to camp in warm areas during the summer. So it’s nice to have space feel a little colder.

Fold-down table folded down

You can see more pictures from inside this camper at the bottom of the post.

So we got a bigger caravan camper now which is 15 feet long (4,5 meter). It’s a pretty standard German caravan that you will see all over Europe.

You can see a full tour of the camper we currently use below.

It’s a Hobby caravan from 2004 which we have modified to include:

  • Nursery (cot bed)
  • Office space
  • Change station for a baby

Interior Ideas For Sleeping Areas In Campers (And RVs)

The first example below is a rather small campervan where they have built a raised bed with storage underneath the bed.

This is a clever way of getting extra storage as you don’t need full ceiling height at the sleeping area.

This bed with built-in storage is really beautifully done. The light wood matches the floor and leaves the room with a spacious feeling. The use of wooden colors in this camper is also great. (We will come back to that!)

travel trailer inside

Everything is made with white and light wooden colors which adds to the spacious feeling in this campervan.

It’s also a really great idea to add some additional lighting around the lines of the ceiling. This adds a lot of coziness to the atmosphere and it can also be used as ambient light at night.

The picture below is taken from the back of a Volkswagen Transporter van.

This is a pretty popular model to turn into a moving living space. Especially if you are looking for a cheap solution.

The Volkswagen Transporter vans have a really good reputation because they tend to work well even when they have been driven a lot of miles.

This is yet another great DIY solution for a campervan with a sleeping area and two sofas in the back. This space can be converted in no time and you will have a nice queen size bed when you need to go to sleep. During the day you will have seating for up to four or five people inside the van if the weather does not invite you outdoors.

travel trailer inside

This solution is basically just a good idea for the sleeping area if you are rebuilding a van into a motorhome.

In the daytime, the area can be used for sitting, playing, dining and so forth, and in the night time you just fold down the backrest, and voila! You now have a queen size bed !

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I have rebuilt to campers with my wife. The bed below is from the camper we currently use.

When we bought the camper it had as U-shaped seating area in this end

We have pulled out the seating area in our camper and installed a modern sofa bed instead. It works just great and now we use this space as a seating area during the day and we can fold the sofa into a bed at night.

Here’s what it looks like during the day and the night:

Modern sofa bed installed in vintage camper

The bed cost us around $800 so it wasn’t that cheap but it has a VERY nice and comfortable mattress that we really enjoy when we are on the road. You can see sofa beds like this one here .

We had the classic U-shaped sofa seating arrangement in this area before and we really felt like it had to go. It was too cramped and we didn’t like sitting there. When you have a 2-year-old toddler in the camper you will have to be on your feet all the time so you don’t want to squeeze in and out behind the table and the sofa.

It says sofa bed which we assembled inside the caravan camper because we couldn’t fit it through the door. It fits the camper perfectly and during nighttime and we can fold down the backrest in order to create a nice (almost) full-size sleeping area.

The Kitchen Space

The kitchen space is often also the main living area, so it’s important to keep it clean and clutter-free – both on a daily basis but also design-wise.

Here are some of the best interior ideas we have come by for remodeling RVs. Let’s start off with a great space for all of us who enjoy a white and minimalistic feel to our RV.

Everything is made to utilize the vertical space and the wallpaper goes well with the white finish on the cabins and the ceiling.

These wooden panels and storage solutions are also very well worked out:

travel trailer inside

This kitchen area is for the family that really enjoys cooking. There’s plenty of counter space, and everything is neatly organized.

It’s pretty cool to have the fronts of the cabinets and drawers painted white with wooden frames. It looks trendy and up-to-date.

Notice how the counter space is curved in order to fit inside the motorhome floor plan:

travel trailer inside

The next idea is a fine way to add some storage to the camper.

The sliding cabinet dorrs are stylish and look like the latest styles from the modern caravan and RV manufacturers.

We love these sliding doors as they don’t require space around to open them up. A very cool and innovative way of designing the drawers.

travel trailer inside

It’s important to be able to close off all the closets during transportation. By adding the little wooden molding on the front off the top shelf you can avoid things from falling out.

This is another fine example of how great it works with light wood colors in campers.

You don’t have to paint everything white. Just keep the natural colors of the wood or choose another light color like the green and blue nuances below.

The dark red/brown colors on the kitchen counters below work wonders for this camper. The kitchen solution utilizes the full width of the caravan and offers a double-sided counter space.

The dark wood really looks great in contrast to the white ceiling and wallpaper:

travel trailer inside

This is another good example of the effective use of natural wood colors and a white ceiling.

White Peel-off Tiles (Adhesive)

Another neat trick we have used is to cover the kitchen walls with white adhesive tiles.

These are pretty cheap and you can mount them directly on the wooden surface.

Here’s a picture of how it looks in our current camper. We found these adhesive tiles on Amazon. They are sold in sheets you can cut with a scissor.

Here’s a link to the ones we used (Amazon) .

White panels for the kitchen walls

They totally transformed the ugly yellow walls into shiny white tiles which looks a lot like the tiles you would find in a modern bathroom.

Ideas For The Toilet And Shower

The bathroom might not strike you as the most important room in the RV/Motorhome, but nevertheless, it’s most certainly a space you can improve.

Check out this great knitted wallpaper and interior:

travel trailer inside

If you need to cram in a toilet in a very tight space, you might consider this type of toilet.

travel trailer inside

It’s a solution we also often find in under-the-stairs bathrooms .

It’s a toilet where you use the spilled water from the sink for flushing the toilet. Many campers have a composting toilet but if you are going for a more regular toilet this could be a really cool solution.

The toilet seat is mounted sideways so you can mount the whole toilet sideways. This way you can access the sink as well. It’s a beautiful and modern design that we found while researching tiny toilet ideas.

Check out these amazing RVs with comfy recliners .

Interior Ideas For The Living Space

As we mentioned above the storage is always critical when it comes to RVs.

Many people forget to built-in enough storage space and then you have to keep boxes and bags in the RV. It’s much better to hide this inside bed furniture and inside seating areas.

This is a nice solution with the partial wall between the seating area and the front of the RV. The table and the seating furniture can be pulled out from under the bed which is a really nice twist!

Check out how cozy this 4-person dining area has turned out:

modern interior of RV with slide-out table top

The storage sofa below is custom-made for a modern bus conversion we filmed in Florida a couple of years ago.

Instead of a backrest, they placed some big pillows for the back. This is a great way to create a comfortable seating area that you can easily turn into a sleeping area when you need to.

Underneath the sofa, there’s a ton of storage as you can see below.

You just grab the seat and lift it up.

Here they have placed batteries and other tools for the camper. You need to remember storage for tools and other things you need for maintenance on your RV or camper.

Storage underneath seating area RV

They have done a really good job of making sure every square inch is used in one way or another.

Normally the best option is to use the bed area for sitting during the day and then fold down/out the cushions when you need to sleep.

This vertical storage space is meant for laptops and magazines.

Everything is painted white and the mattress breaks up the white colors. It doesn’t feel small and claustrophobic as it sometimes is the case with a small space.

travel trailer inside

Just beside this sofa area, you find a built-in dog crate for a very cute (and rather big) dog. You can see it in the video below. As we mentioned, We found these ideas inside a nice modern bus conversion in Florida.

You can see the video tour of the space below where Maria guides you through the many ideas.

Don’t let the skin fool you with this one. It’s REALLY sweet and modern on the inside!

Ideas For Very Small Trailer Campers

We will start with a beautiful kitchen area from a sweet little teardrop trailer.

We have a nice walk-through of a bunch of teardrop trailers in this article . Check it out if you are into tiny camper spaces. There are some really great ideas as well!

Use Natural Wood Colors

This kitchen space is compact and stylish.

The natural colors of the wood look amazing and it adds a lot of atmosphere to a camper.

kitchen close-up view

It’s a great idea to mix the use of natural wood with a couple of strong colors or darker wood. This will add some contrast to the wood.

If you paint everything white it often ends up feeling too sterile and impersonal.

Notice how they have hidden storage underneath the seating area as well as in the back of the van. Extra storage like this is really important if you choose to take down the upper shelves around the ceiling.

The little leather straps look great.

We use the same type of leather straps on our storage cabinets and they are both stylish and modern. We stole this idea from a Scandinavian design Maga zine.

travel trailer inside

Below you see a picture of our own tiny camper which we sold a couple of years ago.

We gutted the camper completely and built everything up anew. This bed is built around a very comfortable mattress and under the bed, we had a ton of storage.

We would keep all our clothes and personal items in here as well as some camping gear.

Storage drawers underneath bed in tiny camper

In tiny campers like this one, you have to sacrifice some space due to the wheels. So we built a bookshelf and a small cabinet for our laptops and electronic devices like cameras, phones, and chargers.

We also built-in power sockets in these shelves so we could leave the computers in there while they could charge.

This way we could get them out of sight and we could keep them hidden when we were out exploring so thieves couldn’t see them.

As we always work on the road when we travel we need to bring our laptops and electronic gear with us. So we had to think about storage for this and a place to charge the gear.

shelves for laptops and charging phones

You cannot have too many power sockets and USB sockets in a tiny space.

In order to get cords and wires out of the way you should place power sockets in every corner and everywhere else, you can. Inside drawers, besides the bed, in the kitchen etc.

We had a power outlet in the corner of the bed so we could charge our baby unit and our phones during the night.

Change Station And Nursery In A Camper

We also built a nursery into our camper.

Max was around one year old when we started camping in Italy for a month. We needed a change station and a crib for him so we decided to put in a crib just like the one he has in our apartment at home.

This way he felt more at home when we were on the go because he recognized the space around his bed.

We placed a change station on top of the crib. It was made from wood from the camper. We throw out a lot of furniture and wood from the camper during the rebuilding process and we kept most of it in order to use it for projects like this.

That’s a great idea because you will need super light-weight materials if you are going to build new furniture and walls in your camper space.

Nursery and change station inside camper RV

And as you can tell, Max loved his little space inside our caravan.

Change station in caravan with baby being happy in his crib

We put up some heavy 3-layered curtains to keep the cold out during the night.

He has a habit of kicking off any sort of comforter we cover him with during the night we so had to keep the temperature high during the night.

The curtains we mounted in the ceiling and went all the way to the floor in order to keep him warm.

I hope you got inspired by these interior ideas. If you have a modern RV space you’d like to have featured on our blog just let us know. We are always open to that.

Travel Trailer Interior – Designing interior is a big part to consider after you’re buying a travel trailer. It’s a living place, but it’s different than designing the interior of a house. Travel trailer, no matter how big you have, will be smaller than a house. Therefore, campers need to carefully think how to make the space of their travel trailer looks open. It is also important to make your space comfortable to see and live in.

Decorating a Travel Trailer Interior

how to repair travel trailer interior walls

Maybe you’ve just bought a brand new travel trailer, that’s why you’re in need to decorate your blank space. Or maybe, you’re unsatisfied with how your travel trailer looks like and want to remodel your older travel trailer . Decorating a travel trailer interior is fun, but can be challenging as well. Here are some tips if you want to know how to renovate a camper trailer:

1. Apply White, Light and Bright

camping world

If you have a small travel trailer, this tip is especially important to take notes. Your travel trailer can  look so cramped if you’re not careful. If your goal is to make your space look larger, these three rules are important to remember. White gives the illusion of an open space, so you might want to paint your travel trailer with that color. That color also makes your space reflects light nicely, which in turn making it look bright.

2. Apply Prime Before Painting

vintage trailer interior

It’s important to prime before you paint your travel trailer. In other words, you shouldn’t mix your primer and paint together. You should prime your walls one coat. Only then, you can start painting.

3. Include Both Color and Texture

travel trailer interior color schemes

White might be the best idea for a larger look to your travel trailer. However, you don’t have to make every part of your interior becomes white. It’s important to incorporate your style, that is by adding your favorite color and texture. One way to do it is by adding wall arts. You can hang your wall arts with bright colors, which will bring focus to them.

For texture, you’re free to choose the kind of fabric you love. If you want to make your travel trailer looks luxurious, you can add satin pillowcases, for example. Having a rug also gives character since they have a lot of textures. For instance, you can add a feather rug with patterns on it.

4. Devote One Pattern

how to repair travel trailer interior walls

If your goal is to make your space looks larger, committing to one pattern is essential. In order to not make your space look messy, choose one pattern that you love. For example, incorporate stripes to your curtains, pillowcases, blankets and furnitures. Consistency helps because it makes your space look neat.

5. Bring Back Reclaimed Wood

camping world parts

Reclaimed wood will give the sense of homeyness to your space. Replacing with reclaimed wood sounds like a lot of work, but it doesn’t hurt to consider. The reason is because reclaimed wood is better than carpets. Carpets are more difficult to clean. In addition, they get dirty too easily. Remember that travelling with RV means that there’s a lot of traffic going in and out.

6. Don’t Forget Exterior

camping world locations

Decorating is important, but decorating exterior should have a priority as well. After all, you will spend a lot of time outside. You can decorate the outside of your travel trailer by adding stylish furnitures. You can also make your RV looks beautiful at night by adding decorative lights and lanterns.

7. View Your Travel Trailer as a Blank Canvas

modular cabinets for rv

Even if you have an older RV, you should look at your RV like you want it to be. In other words, you even have to change the standard furnitures. You can change the standard mattress and install a better one. Don’t hesitate to invest to your RV. In addition, you can also get rid of furnitures you feel don’t serve your needs.

8. Balance Style and Comfort

vintage trailer table

Making your travel trailer looks stylish doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort. Not only considering your preference, it’s equally important to consider the function. In other words, you should decorate your RV by considering whether the function serves your needs. For instance, can you maintain a white themed RV? Maybe you’re reckless or maybe you have little kids so that idea is out of the windows.

How to Repair Travel Trailer Interior Walls

modular cabinets for rv

The most common issue is the damage of interior walls. However, you can repair them by yourself. These are the steps on how to repair travel trailer interior walls in the case of replacing RV wall paneling :

camping world store

First of all, RV interior paneling repair requires you to tape off everything in order to protect the covered areas.

Next, get your saw because there will be excess foam. You should let it sit overnight again.

After that, get a big construction paper for the paneling. You will need to cut it by adjusting to the edges and corners of your travel trailer.

Next, take your cutout to a panel board. You can start cutting following the design.

Finally, place your panel with liquid nail to glue it together.

Travel Trailer Interior Design

how to build rv cabinets

When designing a travel trailer, it’s a must to consider a theme. The reason for that is to make the travel trailer look organized and neat. Either vintage or modern, the travel trailer will look pleasant if the theme is decided.

1. Vintage Travel Trailer Interior

how to repair travel trailer interior walls

Camping, in essence, is an experience of coming back to nature. Vintage trailer interior may be a good idea to be in tune with nature. It gives a reminder of a simple life back then, bringing nostalgia along the way.

a. The Wooden Comfort

vintage trailer interior

What screams more about nature than an RV filled with natural woods? Not only the floor, the walls are also covered with wooden material. In addition, the furnitures are also wooden.

b. Fluffy Style

Still with a design full of woods, this RV gives another touch by adding many comfortable fabrics. Ruffles and embroidery portray a vintage look to the fabrics as well. It will be comfortable snuggling with that many cozy fabrics surrounding the space.

c. Dreamy Space

A way to give an RV a dreamy look is by having thin cream curtains on every window. It’s like entering another world with the light filtered through the curtain. RV interior color schemes of blue and pink give a nice contrast, but not overbearing.

d. Comfortable Clouds

remodeled travel trailers for sale

An RV filled with soft fabrics? It’s possible, even to the point of filling the ceiling with foam. Covering every space with fabric can be done by draping and taping it on the walls. In addition, get many big pillows and rugs to make every spot feels like walking on the clouds.

e. Like Living in a Diner

modular cabinets for rv

Diner gives a big look of retro vibe. The way to renovate the RV in order to achieve that look is by changing the dining space. Change the seating like in a diner and have dark wood paneling.

f. Lovely Trailer

j. Classy Black and White

The theme of this RV is black and white, however there are many patterns incorporated. Having a table with quotes is a fresh idea rather than regular patterns. This travel trailer is a good idea for people who want to play it safe, but still have fun. The checkered floor really reflects the playful but classy looks of this RV.

k. A Twist for Wooden Style

l. Colorful Carnival

how to build rv cabinets

When people think of carnival, they will associate it with fun and colors. A carnival themed travel trailer will bring an excitement to the campers. It’s like having a little party inside the travel trailer. Hanging triangular flags is a good idea to portray that. In addition, add multiple patterns with loud colors to make it more bright.

m. Calming and Sweet

travel trailer interior lights

Having a colorful travel trailer doesn’t equally mean bright. It’s possible to have it with a softer tone, for example by combining soft green and pink. In addition, add little touches of brown to make it look even sweeter.

n. Dark Chocolate

rv overhead cabinets

Dark woods will make a travel trailer look cool, however it might make it look too serious. Other colors are incorporated to combat its somber tone.

o. Lemonade and Orange Juice

camping world parts

Camping equals summer, which means the season for freshness. Yellow and orange are bright enough to convey that spirit. The colors convey the summer drinks that accompany the hot journey.

p. Ethnic Sky

rv cabinet suppliers

Still with wooden style, this time there’s a twist with the ceiling. Not only for blankets and rugs, it’s also possible to make the ceiling to have ethnic patterns. Colorful stripes also give another edge to this travel trailer.

q. Warm with Embroidery

camping world locations

Embroidery always gives a nostalgic feeling. Incorporating embroidery is a sure way to get a vintage feel for a travel trailer. Not only as a table cloth, embroidered curtains and blankets are also a good idea. Adding a beautiful kettle, it will be just like living in a loving grandma’s house.

r. Swinging

camping world careers

s. A Breath of Fresh Air

Planting plants can be another step for campers who want more natural vibe to their RV. The combination of green and brown is like living in the middle of nature.

t. Vibrant World

travel trailer interior color schemes

u. Drapes All Over

vintage trailer interior

Draping soft and thin fabrics will make a travel trailer appear mysterious. It’s just like entering the room of fortune tellers.

v. Rise and Shine

lightweight rv cabinets

For campers who want to have a bright travel trailer interior, yellow should be the answer. Decorate the ceiling with yellow to make it like sunshine is always inside no matter what time it is. In addition, make it brighter by adding all of other colors.

x. Like Royalty

travel trailer inside

Travel trailers have relatively small space, but that doesn’t mean they can’t look luxurious. Campers can look like royalty if they have budget to invest in decorating. The richness of gold combined with woods really gives a feeling of royalty in the past.

2. Modern Travel Trailer Interior

rv interior cabinets

On another hand, camping doesn’t mean that campers have to sacrifice their comfort. Modern travel trailer interior is sleek with futuristic features. Here are some ideas for modern designs:

a. Buckled Up

camping world store

Modern interior emphasizes function. Adding seats with seatbelt will ensure safety for campers.

b. White and Wooden

travel trailer remodel supplies

Having woods as floor is more efficient than having carpets. It is because wooden floor is easier to clean. In addition, adding white is a great idea to make the space look larger.

c. Futuristic Style

rv remodeling ideas photos

Neon lights are often associated with futuristic style. The blue lights will give the illusion like living in a sci-fi setting.

d. Simply White

rv exterior paint colors

Modern interior has an emphasization on white. The reason is because white gives a clean and simple look. Everything is white except for some subtle touches of light woods.

e. Gray Comfort

travel trailer remodel supplies

Using minimal color is the key for modern interior. Since white can be difficult to maintain, gray can be the next option. The calm color will give comfort to campers.

f. Subtle Stripes

Minimal look doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any pattern. Stripes with nude color is a good idea to make an RV appear alive. Using different shades of a color is also important to bring harmony.

g. Modern Black and White

camping world catalog

Black and White is a good contrast for an interior theme. Besides incorporating a pattern, having quotes is also a good idea. It can be on rugs, blankets, pillows and wall arts.

h. Abstract Style

vintage trailer interior

This needs more budget, but geometric patterns will surely give an edge to any camper’s travel trailer. It’s unusual and creative. However, It’s important to have white background since the space needs to look open.

i. Sleek Porcelain

camping world hours

Wooden floor or carpets are common. However, porcelain floor can be a new option. Just like wooden floor, it’s easy to clean. Plus, porcelain floor will keep cool when the weather is hot.

j. A Touch of Pink

travel trailer interior design

Not everything needs to be white in order to make the travel trailer looks open. Adding a soft color like pastel pink will also give the same effect.

k. Black and White (Plus Brown)

where to purchase rv cabinets

In this case, brown softens the contrast of Black and White. It can be too harsh to look at, which is why brown could come into rescue. The splash of brown softens the overall look of the RV.

l. High End Style

vintage trailer supply

With everything sleek, from walls to furniture, there’s no doubt that the RV looks futuristic and luxurious. However, the budget can be overwhelming for many campers to achieve this look.

There are many factors to consider when designing a travel trailer interior. There should be a balance between style and function. In addition, deciding a theme is essential before starting the process. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

What Is A Travel Trailer? Camping Trailers Explained

By Marshall Wendler

A wise man once asked, '"What is a travel trailer?"

Heh. Just kidding. However, this may be a relevant question if you are starting out exploring the RV lifestyle and have set down the path of figuring out the different types of RVs.

The tow-behind trailer is the most popular style of recreational vehicle, with 70% of new RV shipments in 2021 being conventional travel trailers.

But exactly what is a camper trailer, and is it the right choice for you?

Different Types Of Camping Trailers

"Camping trailers" is a pretty generic recreational vehicle term. On this page, we are concentrating on the traditional travel trailer.

We have different pages dedicated to the other tow behind camper types, including:

  • Tear drop trailers
  • Pop up trailers
  • Hybrid travel trailers
  • Fifth wheel trailers
  • Toy hauler trailers

Read on to learn all you need to know about traditional pull-behind camper trailers.

Ultimate Guide To RV Types

Confused about the different types of RVs? Read our guide that explains the differences between the various RV styles.

What Is A Pull-Behind Travel Trailer?

The towable camper is by far the most popular of the various  types of RVs and campers , outselling all other types by miles, mainly due to the lower price point of towable trailers.

Travel trailers are also known as pull-behind campers, camper trailers, bumper pull campers, towable campers, and several other names that indicate how they travel down the road.

As the name implies, these pull trailers require a separate vehicle to tow them. The tow attachment point is at or under the rear bumper at the extreme rear of the tow vehicle; thus, the term "bumper pull travel trailers."

Pull Behind Camper (aka Travel Trailer)

They range in size from 13 feet long up to the high 30 feet in length (though, our opinion is that if you want a longer trailer, it is MUCH safer to get a  fifth wheel ).

Their cost can be as expansive as their length, with basic models starting well under $20,000 and the most luxurious travel trailers costing as much as a house.

RV camping trailers will have everything you need to enjoy a vacation in the great outdoors, though the levels of luxury will be directly reflected in the cost.

Quick Stats:

  • Length: 13 to 39 feet
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6 people
  • Slide-Outs: 0 to 3
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 2,000 to 11,000 pounds
  • Retail Price: $15,000 to $150,000

*Above stats are approximate ranges to give you a general idea

Pros and Cons:

  • Wide variety of sizes and price ranges
  • An affordable alternative to  Class A motorhomes
  • Many SUVs can tow smaller models
  • Self-contained home away from home
  • Longer floorplans are harder to maneuver and control
  • It may require a heavy-duty pickup truck to tow longer models

Who Makes Travel Trailers? Which Brand Is The Best?

Camper Trailer Construction

Recreational trailers are essentially a box built on top of a frame.

The frame has either a single axle (two tires) or a dual axle setup (four tires).

The front of the frame is what attaches to the tow vehicle, with some sort of hitch.

The walls of a bumper pull RV are hard-sided and constructed using aluminum or wood studs.

The siding material is either single-piece fiberglass panels (smooth wall), corrugated sheet metal, or aluminum (for example,  Airstream trailers ).

Manufacturers either use foam sheets or fiberglass as insulation.

Travel Trailer Construction Cut Away

Pull-behind camper roofs are typically a rubber membrane, and you can walk on the roof if suitable underlying materials are used.

Only a few  travel trailer manufacturers  use a solid fiberglass outer shell to construct their tow campers.

These fiberglass shells have the advantage of being very durable and are less prone to leaking. Though using this design means increased overall cost.

Manufacturers of  fiberglass RV trailers  include  Oliver campers , Casita,  Bigfoot ,  Scamp , and  Escape . Not surprisingly, if you are looking for the  best-made RV  you can buy, you should look closely at these.

RV Travel Trailer Interior

Inside the living area of a camp trailer are the comforts of home typical of most recreational vehicles.

Layouts will vary, but there are some similarities between the floorplans offered by different brands. This is because you can only do so much in a small space.

The quality of materials used will vary depending on the price point, but you will find a typical set of standard features regardless of what model you are looking at.

Most traditional vacation trailers include:

  • One or more seating areas.
  • A fully functioning kitchen.
  • A bathroom with a shower and toilet.
  • One or more sleeping areas.

Travel Trailer Interior

Sleeping Areas

All but the smallest bumper pull campers will have a fixed bed, with many being  queen-sized  ( RV queen size bed dimensions ). However, keep in mind that the original mattress in most trailer campers is junk.

Therefore, you may want to get a new  travel trailer mattress  if you spend more than the occasional weekend in your rig or if you have a temperamental back.

Longer floorplans may have a layout that features a master bedroom layout with a separated sleeping area, generally at the front of the RV.

If you have a larger number of people sleeping in the unit, look for floor plans with bunk beds that will have multiple  camper bunk mattresses , giving plenty of bed areas for a large crew.

Queen Sized Bed

Kitchen amenities will include a refrigerator, a stovetop (maybe with an oven), a sink, and a food prep area. A microwave may be optional.

Counter space varies significantly by the floor plan. Pay attention to how much counter space is available.

Outdoor cooking areas (usually a grill) are becoming more popular as manufacturers offer outdoor living space features that allow people to spend time outside preparing a feast.

Seating and Decor

For seating, you will often find a dinette with space for 4-6 people, and this will often double as an additional bed. This type is more suitable for kids.

You find additional seating options when you go up in lengths, such as a couch (that could also double as a bed) or recliners.

Windows are something you should consider when shopping for any recreational vehicle. You want to be able to open a window on either side of the rig so that you get a nice breeze on a hot day.

The inside decor style usually is, well, how do we put this ? Colors are often very beige and bland, and materials often look like they would fit right in at grandma's house. Cabinets are usually of a design that is less than inspiring. However, some manufacturers are trying to spice things up a bit.

Technology And Other Comforts

Luxury is not typically something that corresponds with a tow-behind camper. Even so, they have basic features and comforts that make them a home you can take to your favorite campsite.

Technology features are not necessarily cutting edge. You will generally find a stereo that won't make your ears bleed and a TV (probably optional) that is overpriced for what you get but will do the job.

All but the shortest RV camper trailer will be self-contained with holding tanks for fresh water and an  RV dump tank  for gray and black wastewater.

Heat is provided by a propane furnace and can be run off the house 12-volt battery. Cooling is via a rooftop air conditioner that requires you to be plugged into a 120-volt power source (shore power).

Stand-Out Features Of Pull Behind Campers

Exterior storage options vary wildly on a bumper pull camper trailer, but one fairly universal thing is a forward storage compartment. These are accessible from one side or both sides (pass-through storage).

However, not every model has this storage. Exterior storage options on some floor plans are downright pathetic.

A good design will make full use of all interior storage possibilities. Overhead cabinets should be plentiful, and there should be closets and storage under beds and seating.

Having at least one  trailer slide out  is relatively common in a travel trailer camper, and they expand the living space without having a long RV.

However, slides are a double-edged sword - they are a great way to expand the interior room, but they are a potentially expensive failure point/pain in the you-know-what.

Travel Trailer Interior Opened Up By Slide

Smaller camper trailers may feature a wet bath to save space (the shower and toilet share a single area, with everything getting wet when showering).

Larger camper travel trailers have full bathrooms with a separate shower, toilet, and sink (dry bathroom).

An onboard generator is rarely available with this type of RV, though there are more models with these now than a handful of years ago as manufacturers are catering more to those wanting to live off-grid.

Suppose you want to run your air conditioner, use the microwave, or take advantage of anything else requiring 120-volts of power. In that case, you must be plugged into shore power or a portable  generator for travel trailer  use.

So, keep in mind what space you have available for a generator if you choose to carry one.

Towing a Camper Trailer

Originally, the tow attachment point was the pickup truck bumper when towable RVs were lightweight.

Nowadays, only the lightest pull trailers should be attached directly to the bumper. Otherwise, the hitch is connected to the frame underneath.

Due to the weight of most RV trailers, a  weight distributing hitch  is required to tow your camper down the road safely.

Tow-behind campers are the most popularly manufactured models of the different RV types. The variety of floor plans, lengths, options, and price points are pretty broad (it can even be overwhelming).

There's a model to meet most every need and lifestyle and the vehicle type you want to use to pull the RV around.

If a vehicle can tow, there is probably a travel trailer 'sized right' for it.

Lightweight,  small campers  could be towed by almost any SUV, and a car might not suffice as a tow vehicle unless the RV is incredibly small and light.

Longer and heavier travel camper models require a pickup truck (and maybe a heavy-duty truck) to handle the weight.

With longer floorplans, the combination of the tow vehicle and RV going down the road can be 60+ feet. This makes some people uncomfortable, and rightly so.

Way Too Big Of A Trailer For That Tow Vehicle

Many RVers choose the tow-behind trailer over other types of RVs.

Why? Because once you arrive at your campsite, you unhitch from your tow vehicle, which can then be used to explore the local area.

The advantage of using a truck over an SUV to tow a bumper pull camper is that the truck bed is left open for additional storage space.

When using an SUV as a tow vehicle, storage is inside the vehicle. This subjects you to the 'wonderful' smells that accompany what you bring (trash storage, gasoline inside your generator, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a travel trailer cost.

Retail prices for new RV trailers are all over the map, and cheap units are available for around $15,000 to ultra-luxury vacation trailers with an MSRP in the mid-$100,000's.

The quality of these interior furnishings varies wildly, as does construction quality.

If you purchase a low-end $15,000 trailer camper, expect to get what you pay for. Equipment levels will be minimal and cheap, as will the overall design.

Buy a $188,000 Airstream and expect to get higher-end furnishings. ( Why are Airstreams so expensive? )

  • Want to know what a used travel trailer should cost? Learn how to find NADA travel trailer values and see what new versus used pricing is like.

Is A Travel Trailer A Good Investment?

A travel trailer is not a good investment in the traditional sense of the word, and it most likely will not appreciate and will most likely cost you money in the long run. In other words, camp trailers don't hold their value (in most cases).

However, this isn't the proper way to measure if buying one is worth it. They are an excellent investment if you spend enough time camping with your family or friends and if you genuinely enjoy the RVing lifestyle.

RVs are often an economical and fun way to see new parts of the country and explore areas you've never been to or enjoy spending time in.

What Is The Average Life Of A Travel Trailer?

The average life of tow-behind trailers varies greatly depending on their initial construction quality (often poor) and how well you take care of and maintain the rig. The useful life can approach 20+ years if not abused, especially if you start with a quality RV.

Like most things in life, the better you take care of it, the better it will take care of you. However, if you start with a piece of junk, don't expect it to give you a long, trouble-free life.

Can You Take A Travel Trailer Off-Road?

You can take travel trailer campers off-road, but don't expect to take the average one up the side of a mountain following a goat path.

I've taken my 24-foot-long RV trailer off-road many times, but mostly down decently maintained gravel roads in a National Forest or BLM area. Some places have been sketchier, and after arriving at the location, I questioned my sanity, but these are the exceptions.

Some models are better equipped to go down rougher roads because they have higher ground clearance and suspensions setup to handle rougher conditions. Though most recreational trailers can handle most light off-road situations, getting to a reasonably tame spot in the backcountry should be attainable for most.

Can You Move A Travel Trailer By Hand?

Only the smallest and lightest travel trailer RVs can be moved by hand, which means most will require a vehicle to reposition them. Before you unhitch from your tow vehicle, make sure you are in the position you want to be in. Otherwise, you will need to hitch back up and make an adjustment (you'll do that once and then be more careful in the future).

Can You Live In A Travel Trailer Year-Round?

You certainly can live in RV camper trailers year-round. Both  Camp Addict co-founder Kelly  and I did just this for a combined total of 12 years. So yes, you can permanently live in trailer campers. This is becoming a more popular lifestyle choice for many different age groups (not just the older generation, typically the demographic one thinks about traveling around full-time).

Do Any Travel Trailers Have 2 Bathrooms?

There are travel trailers with two bathrooms, but these will be longer floorplans with room to spare. An average-size pull trailer will have a single bathroom, and smaller models will have a wet bath (combines the shower and toilet into a single small compartment).

Pull-behind campers are the most diverse class of RVs with multiple lengths, floor plans, models, and styles available to please just about anyone's RVing needs.

As the most popular (and diverse) of the different RV categories, camp trailers are an excellent way for people to enter the world of RVing.

Consider a towable trailer if you are looking for something to take your family out on a weekend adventure or you want an RV to live in year round. . These pull RVs offer such a wide variety of options that you will find one that is right for you.

Both Camp Addict co-founders Kelly and Marshall lived full-time in travel trailers during their combined 12 years of life on the road.

While all RVs are a compromise in one way or another, RV trailers are the right choice for the solo person, couple, or family to experience nature at their favorite campground.

Hi Marshall…..I’m an RV newbie! Looking to purchase a used (2010-2017) travel trailer in the 18-22′ range. Tow vehicle is a 2010 Toyota Sequoia 4wd (Platinum). Unsure about single axle vs tandem? Do trailers in this size range have brakes? Would a separate brake module (inside the tow vehicle) be advised. I have observed other rigs towing trailers that do NOT have anti-sway/WDH hitches. After reading through your blog I am convinced a WDH is advisable (your thoughts). Thanks in advance and I enjoy your blog…..lots of good info. Joe

Thanks for the comment and it’s great to hear that you enjoy reading Camp Addict. Kelly and I love to hear that!

Oddly enough, my tow vehicle is a 2008 Toyota Sequoia (Limited, 4wd) so I have some experience here. 🙂 (My Lance travel trailer is 25 feet in length and weighs 5,700 pounds max. This is as large of a trailer as I’d want to tow with the Sequoia. It isn’t the happiest going over Colorado mountain passes, but does fine at lower elevations and flatter terrain.)

You may not be able to get a tandem axle trailer in the smaller size, but they are out there. Either way, make sure you use a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for the trailer tires so you know if there is a problem with them. This is especially important with a single axle, as a blow out can have disastrous consequences. (Not to say a blow out is all rainbows and unicorns with a tandem axle trailer.)

Unfortunately we don’t have a page on TPMS systems as of yet. I have used a Truck System Technologies TPMS in the past and Kelly uses an EEZ Tire TPMS. They both seem to work fine. I currently use a Tire Patrol TPMS from RVs. This is my favorite system so far. But it’s pretty expensive.

Yes, trailers in this size range have trailer brakes.

Yes, you should be using a trailer brake controller (again, we don’t have a page on this yet, but we both use the Tekonsha P3 controller.) The Sequoia comes pre-wired to accept a brake controller. The manual has information on where to find the wiring harness (it’s under the kick-panel to the left of the driver’s left foot). You can buy a Toyota wiring harness from Tekonsha that goes between the Sequoia’s pre-wired plug and the controller itself. Installation is really easy!

Yes, a lot of trailers you see on the road don’t have a weight distribution hitch. Or sway control. I wouldn’t use these people as trailer towing mentors. 🙂 You need these! In fact the Sequoia manual says this:

“If the gross trailer weight is over 2000 lbs. (907 kg), it is necessary to use a sway control device with sufficient capacity.

If the gross trailer weight is over 5000 lbs. (2268 kg), it is necessary to use a weight distributing hitch with sufficient capacity.”

I hope that helps! Good luck with your search for a trailer!

Hi Marshall,

I can’t find my original comment I left about brands of travel trailer, but anyway, thanks for your reply! My husband and I purchased our first RV, a 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB. We’re very excited to get on the road and travel around North America over the next year.

Now, we’re trying to figure which truck to purchase so we are safe on the road and can go places like the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, etc. Do you have suggestions for towing a 5,700lbs travel trailer, where will be driving to a new location every 2-3 weeks? We’ve been looking into the Ford F-250 and the Ram 2500, but not sure if it would be better to get a deisel, a V6 or V8, etc. Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks! Christa

Congrats on your first RV purchase, Christa!

I’m happy to see you went with one of the better brands!

Definitely don’t go with a V-6. Though I don’t think those are even offered with a three quarter ton truck (F-250/2500).

5,700lbs is the empty weight. What you need to look at is the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating), or the maximum weight of the trailer. In this case it appears to be around 7800lbs (or at least is for the 2021 year).

You are going to want to have some ‘headroom’ above that in the trucks capability. In other words, you don’t want to be towing a trailer that is right near the weight capability of your tow vehicle. It will just be struggling all the time.

So with this trailer, I think it’s VERY wise to be looking at a three quarter ton truck (heavy duty, as opposed to the light trucks that are a lot more popular – the 1/2 ton F-150, Ram 1500, etc).

I don’t think it’s going to really matter if you go with a gas or diesel. Diesel is going to be considerably more expensive, both to purchase and to maintain. Though it will be an awesome towing machine.

A gas heavy duty pickup should be able to tow that trailer just fine. Though you may be wishing you had a diesel when you are going up/down the awesome mountain passes that Colorado is known for. But otherwise, you should be fine.

If money is no object, go with diesel. If the budget is tight, go with the gas 3/4 ton truck.

This is great and exactly what we are thinking based on our research. Very happy to gut check with someone very experienced in what we’re about to do. We really appreciate your advice and quick replies! Happy travels 🙂

Hi, my husbamd and have been looking at different types of bumper pull trailers. One that we would live in full time traveling. Do you have any recommendations. We have been searching a long time over a year now. We have a 16fb that we have out grown for camping sonwe are wanting like 27 to 30ft

When you’re on the road, it’s a great feeling when your camper feels like home. Decorating ideas for travel trailers or RVs can make it feel this way. No matter which you choose, campers come with fairly standard and overall boring interiors. Give your camper a personal touch to make the place feel more like home. Having a personalized space, no matter where you park, is a great feeling.

Keep in mind your RV décor needs to be light to keep from going overweight. In some cases, you can reduce your camper weight by replacing some of the dull décor with a lightweight modern style. If you think something may be too heavy, best to leave it behind. For more info check out our article called 20 Best Ways to Reduce RV Weight .

Here are 19 decorating ideas for travel trailers and RVs to get you started.

Why Do All RV Interiors Look The Same?

Aesthetics are usually not the primary point throughout the manufacturing process. One of the closest comparisons to RVs you can make is a yacht. After all, yachts are nothing if not RVs on water. Yachts tend to have a refined, bougie, impressive aesthetic, whereas RVs tend to be more practical in design.

That’s not to say that the question isn’t a little bit disingenuous. RV floorplans are similar across manufacturers but only similar within their respective classes. You will find that long fifth-wheels almost always share identical floorplans, with a few things changed here and there. The same goes for Class As, Bs, Cs, travel trailers, and teardrops.

RVs are also victims of trends. As of right now, there are nine or ten trends, depending on where you look, that encompass each space on an RV. For example, the latest trend across the board is the use of lighting in an aesthetically artsy fashion. Trends of this nature often give the impression that RV interiors look the same.

Even the newer more modern interiors can look the same so decorating ideas for travel trailers will continue.

1. Paint the Interior Walls

Painting your camper walls is a great way to add a personal touch without worrying about going overweight. Choosing your color scheme is a great way to make your camper feel more like a home away from home.

Softer lighter colors can make a small space like a camper feel bigger than it really is. Adding an accent wall with a darker color can make a small room feel larger too!

2. Add Throw Pillows And Blankets to Accessorize Your Travel Trailer

Adding throw pillows and blankets to your RV bedroom or living space makes your RV more comfortable and they look great too. Decorating ideas for travel trailers don’t have to be expensive.

Choose a theme for your blankets and throw pillows that fit your camper design. Make your throw pillows bold and bright to liven up the space. Throw pillows and blankets are an easy inexpensive and fun travel trailer decorating idea!

3. Install Wall Decals Inside Your Camper Trailer

Wall Decal

Wall decals give a space a unique look and allow you to express your individual style. I would put up wall Fathead wall decals of the Baltimore Ravens but Susan would kill me! Choose something small and light like stickers or get creative and paint your own with stencils. There are many wall decal options to choose from, or you can create your own.

4. Use Peel and Stick Flooring Inside Your RV or Travel Trailer

Similar to wall decals, peel-and-stick tile or wood flooring can add style to your place without a significant investment. Accent a kitchen wall with peel-and-stick tile sheets for a personal touch. Peel and stick sheets are easy to use and inexpensive. You can also use them on the ceiling for an easy wood plank ceiling look.

5. Maybe It’s Time for Some Cool Clocks to Decorate Your Travel Trailer

There are some cool clock designs that can add character to your camper. Not only are clocks decorative but they are also practical at the same time. Hanging a lightweight basic clock above the kitchen area can make a place feel more like home. If your camper has a theme, just choose a clock to go along with the theme.

6. Use Decorative Towels to Enhance the Look of Your RV Bathroom or Kitchen

Travel Trailer Hand and Dish Towels - decorating ideas travel trailers

Decorative hand and dish towels are great to have when camping. Why not choose fun patterns and designs to match the décor of your camper? Add a pop of color to your kitchen or bathroom with bright-colored towels.

7. New Curtains Can Dress Up Your Camper Trailer Decor

Your travel trailer or RV probably came with a standard set of boring curtains or valances. Change things up by replacing them with new colorful designs. It’s incredible how much a fresh set of curtains can brighten up a place. Add your curtains into the pattern theme you choose for decorating your camper.

8. Flameless Candles Can Add Ambiance to Your RV

Flameless Candles - decorating ideas travel trailers

It’s tough to have candles in a small space like a camper. With flameless candles , you can set the mood without worrying about setting your camper on fire. Flameless candles add great ambiance and soft lighting inside and outside while camping.

9. Roll Out the Welcome Mat

Having a personalized welcome mat when you walk into your camper is a great touch. Not only does it add personal style to your camper, but it helps keep the dirt out. It’s always a constant battle keeping dirt, sand, and mud out of the camper while camping. This can also be a part of the decorating theme you choose.

10. Wallpaper Maps Make a Great RV Travel Decor Idea

Another way to add color and flair to your camper is by hanging maps of places you’ve been. Choose some of your favorite places and use the maps of those areas to decorate your walls. This way you’ll never leave home without a map of where you’re going when you lose cell service!

11. Install New Cabinet Knobs in Your Trailer’s Kitchen and Bath

Installing cabinet knobs is easy to do and will make your camper’s bath and kitchen cabinets feel like new. Shop around at your local hardware store and pick out cabinet knobs and handles that you like. Swap those out with what your camper currently has. A small touch goes a long way to making a place feel homey. Cabinet handles don’t have to be boring, pick out something fun!

12. Adorn Your Travel Trailer for the Holidays

RV Halloween Decorations - decorating ideas travel trailers

Have fun and decorate your travel trailer or RV for the holidays! Susan’s favorite holiday to decorate for is Halloween! But you can decorate for whatever holidays you like. And Christmas lights don’t need to be used only at Christmas time. They can provide excellent soft lighting while camping at any time of the year.

String lights around your living space or bedroom to give your camper a good ambiance or provide accent lighting. Lamps can be rather heavy and only provide light in a single area. Plus you have to stow them away when on the road. Christmas lights are much lighter and provide even lighting.

13. Install Bunk Beds to Gain Space for Your RV

Stacking beds in your camper gives you more space for activities. You’ll have more space to sleep and hang out with the family. Plus, bunk beds can add a cozy cabin feel to your camper. Take the cabin feel with you wherever you go.

14. Install Hanging Wicker Baskets in Your Travel Trailer

Wall Mount Wicker Basket - decorating ideas travel trailers

Rather than building shelves, you could hang wicker baskets on the walls for added storage. These are great for bathroom items or pantry storage. Shelves can be heavy, and that weight adds up quickly. Baskets are a much lighter option. Plus, everything will fall off of a shelf!

15. Install New Upholstery to Update Your Camper or RV

Most campers are going to come with pretty boring upholstery on the dining booth and other seating areas. Reupholster your living space with a pattern of your choosing. Bright colors help liven up a camper. This should also fit into the décor and theme of your camper.

16. Decorate Your Camper Trailer with a Coffee Mug Set

If you’re camping, you should be enjoying a cup of coffee in the sunrise every morning. A mug set is a great way to show your personality in something that will be useful every day. If your camper is going to be stationary for a while, set up a display so that your mugs can be decorative and functional.

17. Paint the Exterior of Your RV, Travel Trailer or 5th Wheel

Exterior Travel Trailer Paint

While there’s plenty of decorating to be done on the inside of the camper, the exterior is what everyone else sees. A simple stripe down the side of a plain camper can really add style to your camper. Be careful about going too overboard on the outside. Sometimes simple is better.

18. Spruce Up Your RV Bathroom with a Decorative Shower Curtain

If your shower curtain at home isn’t boring, why should your camper shower curtain have to be? A decorative shower curtain is a great way to personalize your bathroom without a big investment. Pick out a curtain that matches the towels you have for the bathroom.

19. Install A Custom Neon Sign to Create Your Personalized Space

Custom neon signs create a warm and cozy lighting atmosphere for your RV. Customize your favorite quotes or words of passion to hang in your RV’s bedroom or on the walls and experience what feels like home. No matter where you are or what time of day it is you have a colorful light that illuminates you like a real home.

Can You Paint The Exterior Of An RV?

You can certainly paint the exterior of an RV. However, it’s not the job that it reads like on paper. Painting an RV is a labor-intensive task that requires the right ambient temps and weather, a lot of prep work, decal removal, the right paint, and the right finish.

It’s a meticulous process. However, if done right, it will make your RV stand out like a brilliant candle flame against a midnight sky. To offer an early answer to the next question, it often raises the resale value of the RV as well. Exterior aesthetics are the first things used-RV consumers look at.

This is especially true if you maintain and even improve the decals. Decals give the underlying paint scheme its three-dimensional pop, and are the primary, stand-out feature on an RV, regardless of the class.

Does Renovating An RV Hurt Resale Value?

Well, this depends on what you’re renovating. If you go to work on a 2018 fight-wheel, probably not much. However, if you take a completely stripped-out classic camper that might bring in $1,000 bucks on a good day, you can easily sell it for a lot more than it was worth before.

Renovating an RV can even be thought of as a downgrade, depending on what you’re doing and even if you’re improving something or think you are. For instance, if you renovate an RV to suit your own needs, you can’t expect prospective buyers to share in those same needs.

Your experience plays a role as well. You can always hire a professional to renovate, however, if the renovation is not too extensive, the cost of the professional may completely offset the profit from the sale you’re planning to make.RV renovation should be a careful and deliberate consideration prior to getting started.

Extra Tips For Decorating Your Travel Trailer or RV

Choose a Theme and Stick With It

Choose a theme for decorating the interior of your camper. Themes give the space a personal touch and a homey feel. Campers are small spaces, so if you want to go with a theme, keep that theme consistent throughout the camper. Keep your theme in mind when choosing colors, wall decals, towels, throw pillows, etc.

Add Storage to Your RV or Travel Trailer While Adding Decorations at the Same Time

Why choose form over function when you can have both! Added storage is always a plus in a camper. When you hit the road, it’s best to have everything tucked away. This way, you don’t worry about things moving around while driving.

Think about how your decorating can also incorporate some form of storage. Add storage compartments under the bed or under couch cushions, for example. This is a great way to tuck items out of the way until you need them.

Final Words About Decorating Ideas For Travel Trailers

Having a customized space on the road makes your RV or travel trailer feel like your own. No matter where you go, you always feel like you are in your home away from home. Happy Decorating!

Is it really okay to paint the interior?!?

Yup it sure is…

We feel like we have a hotel on wheels so we call it our Mobile Marriott. Since it’s our third one we abbreviate it as MM III.

I love to put up the beautiful written peel and stick Wall decals. I buy mine from dollar tree! Now I think they’re $1.25. But they have stayed up on the doors for about three or four years now. Light on the walls and light on the Wallet!

Great ideas. Thank you

Great article Mike & Susan. Gotta get me one of those wicker baskets. 🙂

I just aquired a 1971 open road my son and I are planning on fixing it up, so you’re ideas help allot. We’ve already decided to call it Dessert Rose, so the inside theme will be southwestern.

I’m curious about the couch in the picture. We’re considering ditching the couch that came with our RV in favor of something more comfortable. Where did y’all find that? Thanks!

Love the great ideas about decorating a travel trailer, I am thinking of doing some of these and thank you for the great suggestions.

Glad you liked the article!

Renting an RV is most definitely on our family bucket list – some day! Thanks for these tips!

You will love it I’m sure!

I have never been in an RV before, but am getting more and more convinced!

You might just love it!

I use the magazine holder for my boxes of baggies, aluminum foil, seran wrap. In my rv. And the shoe hanger for shoes, as well as dog leash, and some tools

I love how creative you can be in an RV. I have a friend who also uses a magazine older for her aluminum foil and seran wrap.

I would love to know how to hang shelves, knick knacks, storage items on the walls? I just bought a new 24ft and I am scared to nail or screw anything in the walls. Wires, pipes, who know is back there. And also resale would go down w holes in walls. Love all your ideas, and your adventurous spirit! Thanks G

That’s a great question. The best way to hang anything on RV walls is to use 3M command strips. That way there are no holes placed and you can take them off if you want to resell the RV later.

if you need a more secure fit and not take it down, pop rivets are the way to go as well.

Hi! Love your blog!!! But we need some help…we have a 21 ft Coachman Freelander. We realize we have a “void” in the under storage…the back end of the RV…..is there any way to put a “shelf” in this area….we have our water hoses and black water stuff….but we have room “above” all this stuff…..how can we use that area efficiently? thanks!!

What a creative way to think about using all of your space. I’m sure if you use some lightweight wood or PVC pipes you might be able to build your own shelf. Just try not to add too much weight, and be sure to look at your CCC of your RV. Best of luck!

I’ve poured through hundreds of RV info sites, yours so far is the most useful and interesting, plus it’s practical no “out there” decorating boho, wild paint, pom pom promoting. Simple, clean, organized and really useful, I’ve absorbed almost every word you wrote and so much is of use to us, thank you for a truly good set of articles.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so glad that you’ve found my website to helpful. I try hard to be real, honest and share actionable tips and real photos. Thanks for reminding me to keep doing what I’m doing!

100+ rv storage ideas for ultimate rv organization.

travel trailer inside

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to RV life is limited space.

Soon after moving into an RV, we got sick of all the clutter, so we scoured the internet to find  the best RV storage ideas of all time.

In this post, you’ll learn how to organize your RV (or small space)  today  – and keep it that way!

Use the table of contents to see all the different hacks and click whatever interests you:

5 RV Storage Tips Before You Begin…

1. Take Stock

Write down  everything  you have. I know, this is a monstrous task, but there really is no better way to organize your RV or small space than by knowing exactly what you have.

2. Purge the Useless Items

Do you really need 12 drinking cups and 20 plates? Unless you have a  huge  family, I doubt it. I’m a culprit, too. I have 3 pairs of sunglasses. I don’t  need  them, but… y’know. Everyone has those things they just don’t want to get rid of.

As fulltimers, we plan to get rid of everything we don’t use  at least  once per year. If you’re not  living in an RV , I recommend doing this after every RV trip.

3. Designate a Place for Everything

And I do mean  everything . Keys, your fly swatter, loose change, bike helmets, the RV trash can — you name it. It’s the only way you’ll ever get your RV to stay organized.

4. Use the “One In, One Out” Rule

This is a great way to stay on top of your organization goals. Anytime you bring something new into the RV, the old one should go out. For example…

If you bring a new sweater into the RV, an old sweater should be removed.

This rule will help you upgrade old stuff without keeping tons of unnecessary clutter.

5. Stick to a Cleaning Schedule

With a house that moves, you have to put everything away before you start your drive. However, when you stay in one spot for any length of time (we sometimes stay at one site for over a month), daily cleaning can be overlooked and clutter builds up. No amount of RV storage ideas will help you if you don’t develop a routine.

We have a daily morning routine of cleaning up after breakfast.

Once we’re finished eating in the morning, I like to take 20 minutes to wash the dishes and pick up anything lying around. By doing a small pickup session daily, the cleaning is more manageable and never becomes a huge hassle.

Now — on to the RV storage ideas!

RV Kitchen Space Saving Ideas

Here are a few RV space saving ideas:

1. Put a Free-Standing Drawer Unit in a Cupboard (Secure w/ Bungee)

RV space-saving cabinet drawer unit

These  cabinet-sized drawer units  are pricey, but if you have the money they can be one of the best ways to use RV cabinet space that may otherwise be wasted. Kayla and I don’t use them because of the price, but we’d love to have them if we had the extra money! Secure them with bungee cords to keep them from opening on the move.

2. Get an Over-The-Door or Door-Mounted RV Trash Can

RV trash can idea

An RV trash can on the floor takes up a lot of space… but you need a trash can. Trust me – I went weeks without a trash can in the RV and it’s a huge pain. This  over-the-door trash can  saves space and is totally out of the way!

3. Use Storage Bins in Your RV Shelves

Storage bins  are probably the number one most important piece of the RV organization puzzle. We have a dozen, and could probably use two dozen more. You can use them in cupboards, drawers, and in the outside storage compartments. Label them for bonus points!

4. Replace Your Tea Kettle with This Foldable One

RV space-saving collapsible tea kettle

Cookware can be the biggest space sucker of all the items in your RV. If you like to heat your water with a kettle, getting a collapsible  tea kettle  will save you a lot of room and headaches. You can also get  collapsible colanders  and even  collapsible pots !

5. Replace Mixing Bowls with Stackable Nesting Bowls

Save space in your RV shelves with stackable bowls

Nesting bowls  are a go-to RV space-saving idea. We basically stopped using bowls in the RV until we found these because they just take up so much room. One of those “bowls” is actually a colander, which is great.

6. Use Dish Cradles to Maximize RV Cabinet Space

Save space in your RV cabinets with dish cradles.

These are way up on our wish list. Stacking dishes vertically in a  dish cradle  makes them take up less space and, more importantly, makes it easier to get them out without needing to take anything off the top of them.

7. Install a Hanging Basket for Fruit

RV kichen organizer: hanging baskets

If you can find a spot to put a  hanging basket , they’re great. Kayla and I don’t really have anywhere we could put one, so unfortunately, we don’t have one.

8. Get a Roll-Up Sink Rack

RV kitchen space solution: roll up sink rack

Having an above-the-sink rack, rather than a countertop one, frees up that precious counter space.  This model  even rolls up for easy storage.

9. Install a Peg Board

RV space organizer: Pegboard

We don’t have a spot for one of these ourselves, but I wish we did. A  peg board  on the wall looks like a really cool, easy way to organize the unorganizable: pots and pans.

10. Buy Tons of Suction Cup Hooks

Save space in your RV without damaging walls by using suction cup hooks

The  suction cup hook  pictured above is from our shower, and this thing works wonders! I love anything you can use to hang stuff without putting holes anywhere because we’re planning on selling our RV when we’re done and want to keep its value.

11. Fruit Hammocks

Another item high on our wish list is this awesome  paper plate dispenser .

13. Fold Out Spice Rack

RV space solutions: Fold-out spice rack installed under a cupboard

This one’s cool, and affordable. Just get some  mason jars  and screw them into the ceiling to store small stuff!

15. Wall-Mounted Magnetic Strips

Organize your knives with a magnetic strip

A  wall-mounted magnetic strip  is high on our wishlist as a way to store our knives. Put them away while driving, though – you don’t want them to come flying off the wall if you crash!!

16. Magnetize Your Cutting Board to the Underside of a Cabinet

Save precious counter space with a magnetized cutting board

Get some magnets to install on the back of your cutting board, and a sheet of metal to install under your cupboard: Boom, your cutting board is organized and out of the way.

17. Use Curtain Tension Rods Vertically

Organize RV cupboards with curtain tension rods placed vertically

You’ve probably heard of using  curtain tension rods  in cupboards to keep things from falling out. But, have you thought of using them vertically to organize things? Try it out!

18. Over-The-Sink Shelf

If you can find a way to stabilize it, an  over-the-sink rack  will add some much-needed kitchen space.

19. Airtight Square Canisters

Organize your spices with spice grippers

Like I said, spices can be a pain to organize. These are another item high on our wishlist –  spice gripper clips !

21. Magnetic Spice Holder (Use Caution!)

Camper storage saving magnetized spice rack

These are super popular, so I wanted to mention them. Just be wary of these  magnetized spice racks , because  Nikki Wynn from Gone With the Wynns  said they didn’t work well for her. Maybe she didn’t set it up right, but I’d rather not deal with spice all over my floor to find out.

22. Knife Safe by Camping World

Store knives with a knife safe by camping world

A good alternative to the magnetic strip for storing knives is the  knife safe by Camping World . I’m still not sure I would leave them in this while driving, though.

23. Food Dispensers

Store and organize dry food with a food dispenser

Wall-mounted dry food dispensers  are a great way to free up some cupboard and counter space. Just put the contents in and toss the packaging! It makes it easier to get to your food, too.

RV drawer and cupboard organizer: drawer divider

These  divided organizers  are another great way to save space. You can store drinkware, clothes, accessories, and more! You can create your own with a box and some cardboard dividers left over from packages if you want to be thrifty.

27. Use Towel Rods to Hold Pot Lids

Pot lids are the worst things to find space for. They are awkward and never sit right. Just use a  curtain rod  to hold them on the back of a cupboard!

32. Use Old Wipe Containers to Store Plastic Bags

Travel Travel Storage Ideas

This is a travel trailer space saving idea since most motorhomes don’t have bunk beds. It can be annoying having space used for something you simply don’t need or want there. If you have a bunk bed, but don’t use it, you probably feel the same way.

Organize your space with command hooks!

We LOVE  command hooks . They are a super easy way to organize your stuff and save cupboard space. Check out DIYncrafts awesome  guide to using command hooks  for some great ideas!

88. Insta-Hangers

Save space in your RV using insta-hangers which hide away when not in use!

These  insta-hangers  are pretty cool. You can use them to organize the clothes in your closet, or to hang up your nice outfit while you iron it. When you’re done, they snap down and hide away!

89. Combine Hooks with Metal Containers

RV space saving idea: Hang metal containers from command hooks

This is one of my favorite camper storage ideas. It lets you get really creative!

RV space saving ideas: Get a Toolbox!

You  need  tools if you’re going to spend time in an RV. You never know when something’s going to break – I’ve used my  toolbox  5 times in the past week alone. Check out Ditching Suburbia’s  fulltime RVer’s toolbox article  for tool ideas.

93. Use a DVD Binder Instead of Cases

RV space saving ideas: Store your DVDs and CDs in a binder!

DVD cases take up a lot of space. Ditch the cases and get a  DVD/CD binder  instead.

94. Alternatively, Take Everything Digital

Instead of using your precious storage space on a DVD binder, download all your movies onto an  external hard drive  ( here’s a guide ). You can also keep all your music on there (or just use  Pandora ). Heck, use an  e-reader  or  kindle  instead of carrying physical books, while you’re at it!

95. Use More Tension Rods

RV storage solutions: Use tension roads for storing almost anything!

We’ve found there to be a near endless use for  tension rods . You can hang spray bottles on them, hang baskets on them for extra storage space, or use them vertically to organize stuff.

Inside Bike Camper: Carrying Bikes Inside a Travel Trailer

  • October 5, 2022 /

  • By James V.

Depending on your travel trailer, you may not have a lot of space to put your bikes. This means you may have to get a little innovative and find unique spots for those bikes. Of course, the number of bikes you want inside will play a large role in where you put them.

One option would be to lower your dinette table and place a sheet of plywood over the area. Then lay your bikes on the plywood with protective plastic in between everything. You can put in eye hooks to secure the bikes in place.

To learn more about this task, just continue to read our article. It has the information you need and the best advice is to simply use some common sense when you do this storage option. Take a few minutes to see how this information helps you

Where do You Store Your Bike in a Travel Trailer?

Where-do-You-Store-Your-Bike-in-a-Travel-Trailer

The main concern is not where you can store them but how to secure those bikes while you are driving and towing the trailer. When you are looking for a storage spot there are two factors to consider.

One is how big is your travel trailer. Obviously, larger trailers will have more options available to them than smaller ones. Two, What is your floor plan? That plays a significant role in where you can place your bikes. A third factor would be how many bikes do you need to store inside.

When it comes to smaller trailers, some owners simply make a bike pile on their dinette area and place plastic sheets in between everything. The dinette is a nice spot and offers a lot of room to pile bikes.

However, not everyone does this as other owners lay a bike on their beds and use bungee cords to secure it. Then they use bungee cords to secure bikes to other furniture throughout the trailer.

Others simply take the front wheel off and a bungee cord secures them wherever they have room. That could be against doors, sofas, and so on. If your travel trailer is large enough, you may be able to store them in a bottom storage area if it has one large enough.

Since each trailer is different and has different floor plans you will have to figure out the best places would be for your situation.

How do You Haul a Bike Inside a Travel Trailer?

How-do-You-Haul-a-Bike-Inside-a-Travel-Trailer

The answer to this would be to use common sense. Don’t make a bike pile too high, don’t leave the front wheels on, and don’t lay the bikes over an unprotected bedspread that happens to be your wife’s favorite.

There are safe places to put the bikes and if you have to use the bed, make sure you have good plastic sheets that cover the bed entirely. Bungee cords are usually the best item to use to secure the bikes.

You just have to make sure they are long enough to hold the bike and reach the security points. Then make sure those security points are strong and sturdy enough to hold those bikes.

The last thing you want is for the points to come loose because of vibration, bumps, or the weight of the bikes. What you have to watch out for when you are putting bikes inside your travel trailer is the grease from the chains.

Make sure they are wrapped well so the chains do not transfer any grease to your items inside the trailer. Some owners put the rear tires on the floor in the dinette area after lowering the table, and the front wheels on the seats.

After that, they use the pedestal to secure the bikes in place. You have a lot of freedom in how you haul your bikes when they are placed inside your trailer. The key is to find the right spots for those bikes so they do not break or break anything if they fall during transit.

Tips For Hauling Bikes Inside a Travel Trailer

Tips-For-Hauling-Bikes-Inside-a-Travel-Trailer

There are different methods you can use to haul your bikes inside your travel trailer. The following are just a few of the many tips you can find elsewhere.

1 . Use old blankets- these wrap around the bikes and keep them from being scratched or scratching something else. Plus, old blankets should keep the grease from the chain away from the seats and other pieces of furniture.

The blankets can be folded up and stored under the bed when not needed.

2. Use tarps- these work just as well as blankets and are thinner. Place a tarp over the bed or the seats of the dinette. Then lay the bikes on top of the tarp. You can put a sheet of plastic between the bikes so they do not scratch each other.

The weight of the bikes may keep them from shifting but use bungee cords to keep them in place.

3. Wedge them in you can wrap each bike in their own blanket or tarp and then stick them in between different pieces of furniture so that they will not move.

The drawback to this option is that if you stop along the way for a night of rest, the bikes are going to be in your way.

Some Final Words

When it comes to storing bikes in your travel trailer, you really do not have a lot of options, especially when you have a smaller version. You can only go with your floor plan and make the best of it.

Usually, the dinette area or your master bed are the two best locations to put your bikes. If you do not like that idea, you can wedge them into other areas. But that puts those bikes in your way.

If you go that route, carry a long enough chain to secure them to the hitch outside for the night. If your trailer is larger, you will have more options.

Pixar's ‘Inside Out 2' Had to Cut Out 1 Emotion

Prepare to have your emotions upended as Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 heads to theaters in summer 2024.

Inside Out premiered in 2015 and followed a young Riley as she was uprooted by her parents from the Midwest to San Francisco. Following the move, Riley's emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - "conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school," per the synopsis.

Amy Poehler , who voices Joy, announced at the September 2022 D23 Studio Showcase that the animated feature is getting a sequel. "Pixar is making Inside Out 2 !" she screamed to an excited crowd.

The first look at the upcoming movie was released in November 2023 . After experiencing a surprise "demo day" inside Riley's mind, Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness are introduced to Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke .

Stars Who Have Voiced Animated Disney Characters

"Who made the console orange?" Joy asked in the clip before Anxiety, who is an orange character, popped up and teased she isn't the only new emotion they will have to deal with as Riley grows up.

Scroll down for everything to know about Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 :

What Is ‘Inside Out 2' About?

The new movie will follow the original five emotions as they deal with new emotions, including Anxiety and Embarassment, that burst into Riley's mind now that she's 13 years old and heading to hockey camp.

Which Emotions Are Returning?

In addition to Poehler's Joy, Lewis Black will return as the voice of Anger and Phyllis Smith is back as Sadness. Tony Hale is joining the cast as Fear, which was originally voiced by Bill Hader . Disgust is also a returning emotion, but instead of OG star Mindy Kaling , the green character will be voiced by Lisa Lapira .

Teenage Riley will be voiced by Kensington Tallman , while Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan reprise their roles as Riley's mom and dad.

Who Are the New Emotions?

Hawke's Anxiety was the first new emotion announced for the Pixar sequel. She will be joined by newbies : Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui a.k.a. boredom and Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment.

The rest of the new characters include high school hockey player Valentina "Val" Ortiz ( Lilimar ), Coach Roberts ( Yvette Nicole Brown ) and Riley's BFFs voiced by Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green and Grace Lu .

Which Emotion Was Cut?

Director Kelsey Mann revealed that one emotion didn't make the final cut: Shame.

"It was not fun to watch," Mann said of the character while speaking to TheWrap in April 2024. "It was not fun. It was too heavy. You know when you see a good movie and you're like, ‘Man that was a great movie.' You want to see it again? ‘No, not really.' There are movies like that."

What Did the Official Trailer Reveal?

Inside Out 2 's full trailer dropped on March 7 and introduced the OG emotions to the three other newcomers, which doesn't appear to be a good thing.

"This is Joy coming to you live in Riley's mind!" Joy says in the video, as clips of Riley in a hockey uniform come into focus. Joy then reintroduces her buddies, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness, to the audience, while using a sports announcer voice.

Joy laments on Riley "growing up so fast" while a home video of her turning 13 was on the screen. Just as Fear is about to tell the group there is "nothing but smooth sailing from here" with Riley, Anxiety pops into the room followed by Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment.

"I know change is scary, but we need new friends or we'll be totally alone in high school. Out with the old and in with the new," Anxiety tells everyone as she takes over the control panel.

Anxiety claims that "Riley's life requires more sophisticated emotions than all of you" before bottling up Joy and the other basic emotions. "We are suppressed emotions!" Fear screams.

The rest of the trailer teases that Joy and her OG emotions will have to work together to get back into the forefront of Riley's head and stay relevant.

When Does ‘Inside Out 2' Hit Theaters?

The animated film hits the big screen on Friday, June 14.
