When I first started covering composite decking 25 years ago, it was hard to get excited about it. Most options looked pretty meh and performed even worse. Times have changed. Though composite decking is still made from the same basic formula of wood fibers, plastic and polymers, the ingredients and manufacturing process have gotten so much better.

If you’re embarking on a deck redo , give today’s composite a look. Our top picks are all readily available from home centers or online retailers. And the best of the best should still be looking good 50 years later, so this could well be the last deck you ever install.

The company that invented composite decking in the late 1990s has been the category’s biggest innovator. Any shortcomings with its earliest products have been addressed, especially if you spring for its top-of-the-line Transcend Lineage Composite Decking.

The material isn't cheap, costing as much as premium wood decking, like Western cedar or ipe. But when we brought samples into the Lab for testing, the composite proved extremely resistant to staining and held up well in our impact tests, designed to simulate pounding hail or heavy objects getting dropped onto the surface. Trex backs its promise that the material won't rot, warp, crack, or splinter with a 50-year limited warranty. Though it does get a little slippery when wet.

As for aesthetics, our design experts were wowed by the subtle grain patterns across the Transcend Lineage’s five color options, a nice mix of browns, grays and beiges. “Love it!” said GH’s Home Design Director Monique Valeris . “The color options feel sophisticated, especially the brown shades, which are so rich. The pattern of the grain seems natural as well."

There’s a sustainability story here too, since Trex says its composite is made from 95% recycled content, including reclaimed sawdust mixed with the plastic film from old sandwich bags, newspaper sleeves and the like.

We like MoistureShield for its wide range of composite decking products to meet every budget. Though the brand has even less expensive options than its Meridian series, it’s our top value pick because it hits the sweet spot between cost and performance.

Based on Lab tests, the capped composite decking (meaning its composite core is protected by a polymer outer layer) should deliver exceptional durability and moisture resistance for many decades. The 50-year warranty shows the brand's willingness to stand behind that performance.

The decking's resistance to fire enables it to be listed as one of the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Approved Products in California. Appearance-wise, its wood-grain finish and reduced pattern repetition create a convincingly natural look.

Choose from three colors: Citadel (a cool gray), Shoreside (a sandy blond) and Mariner (a dark brown). The Citadel and Shoreside lines offer CoolDeck technology, which the brand claims can reduces heat absorption, a benefit for homeowners in extremely hot regions. “While the color choices are limited, they are quite rich and sure to work with a variety of home styles,” said Valeris.

If you live in a region that gets a lot of rain, it’s important to choose a composite decking that’s built for moisture. We like this TimberTech because its wire-brushed, rough-hewn finish provides superb slip resistance, not to mention a depth of character and variegation.

The capped composite decking also does an excellent job fending off mold and mildew growth, which contribute to premature erosion. In our extensive Lab tests, the boards were extremely resistant to stains in our test, including tough ingredients like oil and mustard. The tradeoff for that durability is a hefty material that's harder to cut through.

The 5.5-inch-wide composite boards come in 12-, 16- and 20-foot lengths, and a blend of hues ranging from Reclaimed Chestnut to Dark Roast. TimberTech gets a check mark for sustainability too, since the company claims its USA-made composite decking consists of 85% recycled materials, including shrink wrap and laundry bottles. A 30-year warranty against staining and fading isn’t the industry’s best, but it still promises decades of services without signs of wear and tear.

Given its dense construction, composite decking tends to be heavy and hard to cut. That’s what we love about this composite decking from Deckorators. It uses a fiber-like structure to maintain exceptional strength while being about a third lighter than the competition. The claim checked out in our extensive Lab tests, but for good measure we had the decking installed by Fernando Pages, a Houston-based homebuilder and outside judge for our annual Good Housekeeping Home Reno Awards .

Pages confirmed that the Voyage decking is “lighter than most PVC and composite materials." He also reported virtually no expansion and contraction, which makes for an easier, more forgiving installation (though the flexibility of the material means extra care must be taken to keep them straight during installation).

And he liked that the decking can be installed directly on the ground or in water without voiding the warranty — good for coastal applications, or even for building directly on a lawn. (For more details, check out Pages' full documentation of the project on his YouTube channel .)

This competitively priced product comes in six colors, including grays and browns. The vertical grain design adds a bit of slip-resistance. We also like the variety of widths, from 3.5 inches up to 9.25 inches, which helps create visual interest.

I’m a big fan of deck tiles — a floating system in which the deck is installed above an existing substrate, like a brick patio or stone terrace. The tiles simply snap into plastic connectors, so the project is extremely DIY-friendly.

While we didn’t get hands-on with this version from NewTechWood in our Lab, it’s a good example of the simplicity of the system. The 1-square-foot tiles come 10 per box, so it’s easy to do the math to figure out what you’ll need to cover your deck (though the installation is relatively easy, I always tell people to add at least 25% extra material to account for mistakes in the field).

The UltraShield Naturale tiles come in close to 30 colors, from wood-look browns to bright pinks and blues for those looking to have more fun with the deck. Plus they can be laid out in visually interesting patterns, like checkerboard or parquet. We can’t speak to the performance of the composite, though it’s worth noting that the 10-year warranty is significantly less than other composites. But for a quick, easy and inexpensive makeover of an outdoor space, composite tiles are an excellent option.

How we choose composite decking

a selection of synthetic deck boards

Our experts in the Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute keep constant tabs on the decking market to identify the composite materials you’re most likely to find at home centers and specialty dealers. To keep up with all the latest trends and innovations in outdoor living, we also regularly attend trade shows and industry events, including the International Builders Show (the 2024 edition in Las Vegas was my 24th in a row, not counting the year off during the pandemic).

an expert measures stain resistance of a deck board

When it comes to hands-on testing, we focus on brands with a proven track record for performance and reliability. In our Labs, we run stain tests to determine how well a material resists mustard, wine, mud and more (pictured). We also run abrasion tests to see how materials withstand scratches.

To see how well decking resist dings from pounding hail or fallen branches, we use an impact machine. Finally, whenever possible, we use the decking materials for actual installations, including by professional judges during the annual Good Housekeeping Home Reno Awards, to see how they perform under real-world conditions.

What to look for when choosing the best composite decking for your house

line break

By narrowing your choice of decking down to composite, you’ve made the whole selection process easier (for example, you don’t have think about maintenance as much, since all composite involves very little upkeep). But within the composite category, most brands offer good, better and best options. So you do need to make sure you end up with the right material for your needs. Here’s what to think about:

✔️ Cost: Composite decking can cost anywhere from $4 to $12 per square foot, according to ANGI , the home services marketplace. Do the math on a 300-square-foot deck, about the national average, and you’re looking at between $1,200 and $3,600 for materials alone. Spending more on a brand’s top-tier composite line typically gets your better performance and a more natural-looking deck, though we do find exceptions to this rule, so you should never go by price alone.

✔️ Durability: The best composite decking will deliver decades of service without cracking, staining, flaking or fading. The manufacturer’s warranty is a good indication of how long you can expect the deck to last; some only cover it for 10 years, while the best warranties extend up to 50 years. For a deck to last that long, it’s almost certain to be “capped,” meaning the composite core is protected by a polymer outer layer that resists fading, staining and other kinds of degradation.

an expert compares the pattern of two decking boards

✔️ Design: If you’re going for the look of a real wood deck, look for composite decking with convincing grain patterns and color variation. The best versions also have minimal pattern repetition, a giveaway with cheap faux products. Color palettes tend to get more expansive with higher-quality composite decking lines. That’s helpful, since the current trend is outdoor spaces that integrate with the adjacent space indoors, including matching the color of the deck with that of interior floors. We’re also seeing a lot of interest in lighter-toned decks, especially in hot parts of the country, since they don’t absorb as much heat as dark-colored decks.

✔️ Safety: The main consideration here is slip-resistance. Entry-level composite decking often has a smooth surface that can be quite slippery when wet. Deck boards with a textured surface will have a much higher slip-resistance, which is measured by an industry standard known as the coefficient of friction, or COF. It’s not as easy to find as it should be with all composite decking materials, but if you’re concerned about slippage, it’s worth asking the manufacturer or retailer if they can provide information. A COF of .5 or higher is needed to achieve proper slip resistance.

What’s the best way to care for composite decking?

line break

Though composite decking doesn’t require any of the sealing or staining of wood decking, some maintenance is needed to maximize its lifespan and keep it looking good over time. We recommend a deep cleaning at least once a year.

Start by clearing any items off the deck and sweep away debris. Then clean the surface with warm, soapy water and a soft bristle brush. Tackle any tough stains with a special composite deck cleaner, available online and at home centers. Rinse the deck with fresh water.

Important n ote : Though some composite decking can be cleaned with a pressure washer, be sure to check your user’s manual first. The high-pressure spray can damage some composite surfaces, potentially voiding your warranty.

Composite decking has a lot to offer that traditional wood can’t.

It’s easier to maintain, for one thing. Composite decking—an amalgam of ground-up wood and plastic formed into planks—doesn’t ever need to be sealed, stained , or painted. Real wood may need to be restained as frequently as every two years and resealed as frequently as once a year.

Composite decking has always cost more than wood. What you pay will depend on where you live, the decking you buy, and other factors. The price difference narrowed somewhat during the pandemic, as wood prices rose, but now the gap has widened again.

Best Composite Decking

  • Composite vs. Wood Decking

How CR Tests Decking

Composite decking is far more expensive than wood, but it has advantages beyond its durability. For instance, some materials are flexible enough to be heated and shaped, allowing you to create, say, rounded corners, railings, or a border for a kidney-shaped pool. That would be expensive to duplicate in solid wood decking.

Aesthetics are a factor, too, especially if you like a uniform look. The woodlike grain lacks irregularities like knots that can show up in the real thing.

And you have a choice of patterns, according to Li Wang, the engineer who tests decking for Consumer Reports. “Manufacturers usually use a few different molds to make their composites, so there’s some pattern variety,” she says.

A number of manufacturers say their products are made primarily of recycled materials, such as plastic grocery bags. Note, though, that after a typical life span of 25 years, the boards are still likely to end up in a landfill.

Composite vs. Wood Decking: CR's Test Results

Our tests turn up benefits and drawbacks to using composite decking.

Among the nonwood decking choices, which also include aluminum and plastic , we find composite to be best for providing the look of wood without the need for wood stain . Most composite decking models do a top-notch job of resisting staining from ketchup, mustard, and other common spills.

But some products offered far less resistance than wood provides when it comes to slips, flexing, and sag in our tests. And most choices are more expensive and heavier than traditional natural pine. (We also test western red cedar, ipe, and redwood.)

The extra weight of composite planks can make them more difficult to handle if you’re doing the job yourself.

And even a composite deck that resists staining will need to be cleaned periodically to rid it of everyday dirt and grime. Cleaning guidance varies, especially with regard to pressure washing , so check the maker’s website for tips about your specific model.

For a look at all the considerations, start with our decking buying guide .

Ideally, the composite decking you choose will look good, and remain solid and safe for many years. Consumer Reports’ performance tests address these factors.

We use specialized instruments to test each decking sample for resistance to flexing. That ensures that boards won’t bow or bend if you’re entertaining a crowd or if you park a heavy grill in a particular spot all summer long.

Next, we size up which materials resist staining from spilled ketchup, mustard, and other common items you might use while eating outside . We also evaluate each sample’s slip resistance, which is very important if you’re installing a deck near a pool.

We drop weights of various sizes on the surface of each board to see which samples dent on impact. And we send more than a dozen samples of each material to two areas with extreme climates: hot and dry Arizona, and Florida, where the humidity presents a different challenge to certain materials.

We assess those samples yearly for three years, evaluating their appearance and retesting for all the attributes above, to see how age and exposure to the elements affect overall performance.

General Trex Decking FAQs

Why should i choose trex decking.

Trex is probably the best-known composite decking brand in the world. With more than 30 years as a leader in deck material, the word Trex has nearly become synonymous with “composite decking.”

Choosing Trex low-maintenance composite decking will change how you live outdoors. Instead of spending hours on staining and maintaining a wood deck, you can use those hours to enjoy a gorgeous, natural outdoor space with those you love, making memories, relaxing, and enjoying all your deck has to offer.

What Are Trex Deck Boards Made Of?

Trex composite deck boards are made from a mix of recycled plastic and real, reclaimed wood fibers. That gives Trex the look and feel of natural wood - but Trex is far more durable than pressure-treated wood, and requires significantly less regular maintenance than a traditional wood deck. The composite material is encased in a tough outer shell on the top and sides, which helps protect the boards from moisture and scratches. You can learn more about the pros and cons of composite decking and wood here . You can see the interior composite material and the tough synthetic shell below:

A cross-section of Trex Composite Decking

Where Is Trex Decking Manufactured?

Trex manufactures its composite decking out of facilities in Virginia and Nevada. Trex boards are made in the USA.

How Long Does Trex Decking Last?

Trex’s composite deck boards are designed to be ultra-durable and long lasting through the elements of your outdoor space.. Under normal conditions, a Trex board should last decades. The company offers a 25-year fade and stain warranty.

Will Furniture Scratch My Trex Deck Boards?

Trex caps its deck boards with a strong, weather-resistant shell that gives all Trex boards scratch-resistance. If you’re especially concerned about avoiding scratches and scuffs, check out Trex’s Transcend line , which features the brand’s highest scratch-resistance.

Does Trex Come With A Warranty?

Yes! All of Trex’s deck boards carry a 25-year limited residential fade and stain warranty.

Does Trex Get Hot On Sunny Days?

Just like wood or other materials, Trex composite decking can absorb heat when it’s in direct sunlight, making it hard to walk barefoot on a hot day. If your deck is in direct sunlight, we’d recommend choosing a lighter color - light grays and light browns tend to absorb less heat from the sun.

A gray deck will stay cooler in direct sunlight, like this one featuring Trex Transcend in Island Mist

Is Trex Decking Environmentally Friendly?

Trex is made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, making it an extremely eco-friendly alternative to wood. Trex has won multiple awards for sustainability and environmental responsibility and has been an environmental leader among composite decking brands for more than 30 years.

Choosing Your Trex Decking

What’s the difference between trex enhance, trex select, and trex transcend.

Trex offers three composite decking lines with different features.

Trex Enhance is the most cost-effective option. The boards feature scalloped bottoms to use less composite material, keeping costs low and making for lighter-weight boards that are easier to transport. The Enhance line features a textured wood streaking on the surface with four color options.

The scalloped bottom of Trex Enhance Naturals decking

Trex Select boards have a unique textured wood grain look, rather than the streaking and ridges of Enhance and Transcend. Trex Select comes in five color options, including some bold reddish and bluish tones. Select boards are slightly thinner (7/8-inch) to reduce weight.

Trex Select deck boards

Trex Transcend is the brand’s top-quality decking line, featuring the most color options (8) and Trex’s highest level of scratch-resistance. Transcend comes in a wide range of colors including exotic, tropical wood looks, and features textured streaking on the board surfaces.

Trex Transcend deck boards

You can read more about the differences in Trex decking lines here .

If you need help choosing the best Trex line for your outdoor living space, give our team a call at 1-888-824-5316 . We’ll help you weigh the options and find the perfect fit for your vision.

What’s The Difference Between Grooved Edge Trex Boards And Square Edge Trex Boards?

Grooved edge boards feature a long ridge or groove cut into the long edges of the deck board. Grooved edge boards are designed for use with hidden deck fasteners . Traditional square edge boards are for use with other fasteners or in places where the edge of the deck board will be visible, like the outsides of your deck, stair treads, or drink rails.

Can you rip a trex deck board to a smaller width.

You can rip a Trex board down to a smaller width, although you shouldn’t rip it down to reduce thickness. If you rip a Trex board to narrow it, be sure it can still be installed according to the manufacturer instructions to maintain your warranty.

Can I Curve Trex Composite Boards?

You can create unique deck patterns by curving or bending composite deck boards. First, you’ll heat the deck boards, then bend them to the angle you need. If you’re interested in curving deck boards, we’d recommend giving our team a call at 1-888-824-5316 to help you draw up the perfect plan for your dream deck.

Installing Trex Decking

How do i attach trex decking to my deck frame.

You can fasten your Trex boards to your deck frame using either deck screws or hidden fasteners . Deck screws drive through your deck board and attach to your frame. Hidden fasteners sit between boards and slide into grooves in your decking to fasten boards down.

Depending on which line of Trex you’re using, Trex recommends different fasteners - you can see the full list of fasteners in the installation guide here .

How Do I Hide The Screws While Installing Trex Decking?

There are two main ways of hiding screws after installing your Trex composite boards.

Trex offers the Hideaway Universal Hidden Fastener System , which fastens boards down by sliding into grooves in the side of the boards. (Make sure to buy grooved-edge boards for this method). You could also use a plug system , made to exactly match the color and finish of your Trex boards.

Trex Decking Maintenance

Do i have to stain trex composite decking.

No. Unlike wood decks, composite material never requires staining or sealing. Trex delivers the best in low-maintenance decking.

How Do I Clean Trex Decking?

Low-maintenance Trex decking is extremely easy to clean. All it takes is three simple steps:

  • Sweep off your deck surface to clear debris like leaves or pine needles.
  • Brush your deck with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristle brush
  • Rinse your deck surface with fresh, clean water.

That’s it! There’s no heavy cleaning required.

You can watch this video for more details on how to clean your deck.

Can I Use A Pressure Washer To Clean Trex Decking?

You can pressure-wash current generation Trex deck boards, but take care to use a low-pressure setting. Trex recommends a pressure washer set to less than 3100 psi with a fan-tipped nozzle. First, spray your deck with soapy water and gently scrub with a soft bristle brush. Then, rinse off your boards thoroughly, keeping your nozzle at least 8 inches away from the deck surface.

If you have an early-generation Trex deck board, avoid using power washers to keep from damaging your deck and voiding your warranty.

For what is meant to be a relaxing outdoor refuge, a deck can sure be a lot of work. Sanding, power-washing, refinishing: The demands are enough to make some homeowners wonder whether having a deck is really worth all that regular maintenance. Has yours become more of a worksite than a pleasure pad? Consider making the switch from wood to composite decking.

Though variations exist, composite decking is generally made from a mix of wood scraps—called wood flour—and plastic particles. Although some manufacturers rely on virgin wood and plastics, others make extensive use of recycled materials. In 2010, Trex reused 3.1 billion plastic grocery bags, while TimberTech says that each year its products incorporate 107 million pounds of post-industrial and post-consumer waste materials.

As part of their manufacture, composite deck boards are treated with preservatives that help ward off rot, mold, and mildew. Planks are dyed in a host of a colors and imprinted with a range of textures, most of which convincingly resemble genuine wood grain. Some composite decking products carry warranties of up to 25 years, but these typically apply only if you install the deck according to the manufacturer’s directions; be clear on what those are prior to construction.

Pros of Composite Decking

Low-maintenance.

Because of its plastic content, composite decking neither splinters nor rots, and it resists mold and mildew . Compared with wood, which requires cleaning and regular staining and/or sealing, composite boards make for a “build and chill” project. Hands down, easy care is the biggest plus for this material.

SUSTAINABILITY

The eco-benefits of composite extend beyond the recycled materials used in the decking’s manufacture. Because the components are virtually maintenance-free, gallons of stain and/or sealant are saved. More durable than wood, composite decking stays out of the landfill longer.

LONGER BOARDS

Whereas wood planks are typically sold only in 16-foot lengths (longer boards can sometimes be specially ordered), composite decking is routinely available in board lengths up to 20 feet. That means you can have fewer seams on your deck, depending on its dimensions.

HIDDEN FASTENERS

Composite decking often goes down the same way as wood, that is, with stainless steel decking screws. But some manufacturers offer products with clip or tongue-and-groove assembly. These easy building systems result in deck surfaces without unsightly rows of visible screw heads.

According to Popular Mechanics , basic pressure-treated lumber goes for about 80 cents per linear foot, while redwood or cedar runs up to three times that amount. Composite decking materials, on the other hand, sell for $2.50 or $3.50 per linear foot. Even so, when you account for the costs associated with maintaining a wood deck (which has a shorter lifespan to begin with), composite decking emerges as the value choice.

Cons of Composite Decking

Strength and weight.

Though comparatively heavier in weight, composite decking tends to be slightly less strong than  wood decking , so a deck built from composite components must have additional supports.

It Can Stain

Plastic is largely responsible for many of the positive features that define composite decking, but the material also includes stain-absorbent wood. If you accidentally get grease or another offending substance on a composite board, you cannot simply sand out the stain.

It Can Scratch

Because you cannot sand composite decking, deep scratches are destined to remain in the boards, though over time, they may becomes less and less pronounced.

It Can Fade

Most composites fade a bit in the few months immediately following installation, but in general, this type of decking holds its color for years, never assuming the neutral gray so common to aged lumber. Before choosing a color for your composite decking, ask to see samples of weathered boards, if possible.

can you paint trex or composite decking

Most homeowners buy a composite decking like Trex because there is virtually no maintenance needed once installed. The single-color dyed during the manufacturing process is designed to last a lifetime.

Sometimes, though, you may find that you want to alter the color a little (or a lot). This can be due to premature fading, damaged areas, small repairs or to cover stains. The first idea turns to replacing the board, but this can lead to a drastic difference in color due to fading and time.

Should you paint Trex composite decking? It certainly is a possibility. We will cover everything you need to know in order to get a nice, even paint on your Trex or composite deck to get a new look.

Top Rated Composite Decking Brands

Trex isn’t the only name in the game. There are several brands of composite and PVC decking that stand out above the rest.

  • TimberTech (Azek). Easily Trex’s number one competition. Azek is durable, easy to install and affordable for most budgets.
  • DuraLife (Barrette Outdoor). A budget-friendly option that may not last as long as the top-tier brands but will last a long time for most uses.
  • Fiberon. A new take on the composite decking options , with plenty of style and options to choose from.
  • Lumberock. A composite board made from plastics and minerals instead of wood pulp to add strength and durability to your deck.

What is Composite Decking?

what is composite decking

Composite decking is a term that covers wood alternative materials that are generally made of a wood pulp and plastic. The composite material is formed into decking boards, dyed and embossed with a wood grain pattern.

Composite material is strong, durable, and can be worked just like real wood. You can cut it with a saw, use lumber nails and screws for attaching and it won’t crack, splinter or rot. Because of the plastic content, it is also dense and doesn’t attract insects or rodents.

The down side, of course, is the cost. In general composite decking is much more expensive than pressure treated lumber. However, it doesn’t require the long-term maintenance and upkeep that wood does, so over the life of your deck, composite will actually cost less.

Should you Paint a Colored Deck Board?

Composite wood decking is dyed during the manufacturing process. The colors are near limitless but most brands will stick to traditional colors, or colors that match the embossed grain pattern.

Because of the plastic composite and capping, the boards are also resistant to stains, fading and damage, which limits the need for repairs, including painting. Of course, there are instances when painting a composite deck board may be in your best interest.

Some brands and some composite materials can be subject to organic material staining. This is when something like a leaf holds moisture against the deck while it decomposes. The result is a dark stain on the board that isn’t easily removed. This also includes chemical stains, grease stains from barbecue grills and other things.

When you have discoloration from uneven fading over time, or an organic stain, it may be easier and cheaper to paint the deck to make it a uniform color once again. Your other option is to replace the worn or stained board, but the new one won’t have the fade time and will stand out compared to the older boards.

Benefits (and Drawbacks) of Painting Composite Decking

benefits and drawbacks of painting composite decking

Painting your deck used to be an annual or bi-annual event. This included sanding, pressure washing, removing old paint, and staining or varnishing the lumber. With composite decking you don’t have any of those tasks that are required. Not once a year and in most cases not for the life of the deck.

Composite decking’s biggest benefit is the extremely low maintenance required to keep it in shape, looking new and performing to expectations. In fact, almost all cases only require a broom and a garden hose to maintain the deck. You can use a pressure washer with the right cone angle, too.

Another benefit to composite decking is that it already comes as a solid color that doesn’t need to be painted over or updated to maintain the color or appearance. Only in extreme cases where this constant direct sunlight will some brands or styles show fading.

However, because the wood plastic composite is sturdy, acts like lumber and is subject to the elements, painting with the right types of paints is something you can do. Whether you need to hide imperfections or stains as mentioned above, or just want a new color.

The major drawback, though, is that once you do paint it, it will begin to act like regular lumber in terms of maintenance and you will need to reapply the paint every year just like with a natural wood deck.

The Best Paint for Composite Decking

Before you head out to the home improvement store and pick up a few gallons of paint, it is wise to check and make sure you get the best paint for the task. Anything that is highly acidic, or contains a bleaching element should be avoided.

You can skip painting altogether and use a varnish, but it must also be a non-bleaching varnish. You also need to think about what you want the end result to look like. Composite decking has a higher sheen than natural wood, due to the plastic content. If you wish to maintain this look you will want to use a semi-gloss or satin finish paint.

The best option for painting Trex or composite decking is to use a high-quality latex paint. Oil-based deck paints are highly durable and easy to apply due to the slower drying time. Acrylic paints are also viable due to the low VOC content. Acrylic is also easier to keep clean. For best results, though, latex paint with a semi-gloss finish is the go-to option.

How to Paint Composite Decking

how to paint composite decking

Before you start painting, you need to ensure you have the right tools and equipment. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it will be enough to complete most products.

  • The paint, in enough color-matched gallons as required for the size of your deck.
  • Pressure washer to clean the deck prior to painting.
  • Soft bristled brush.
  • Non-chemical cleaning items, like a water and vinegar mix.
  • Sandpaper for scuffing the deck surface.
  • Paint brushes, rollers or sprayers.
  • Enough latex primer to cover the deck.

You may also include things like drop cloths, painters tape, newspaper and cleaning rags to your list, too. Anything that you feel you need to get the job done as smoothly and professionally as you can should be added to your list.

Painting a Trex or Composite Deck: Step by Step

Now that you have the materials on hand and are ready to go, follow the steps below to get a new look on your deck and have a great time enjoying your decking in the years to come.

  • Remove any obstacles from the deck. This includes furniture, potted plants, toys, grills, etc. Keep the entire deck clear or any items during the painting process.
  • Clean the deck. If you have mildew, mold or stains you want to clean with a soft brush and a water and vinegar mix. Use a pressure washer to clean the entire deck and rinse the cleaning materials thoroughly.
  • Allow the deck to fully dry.
  • Sand the entire deck. You need to use a high-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the entire deck. 240-grit is recommended. Make sure you sand in the direction of the grain pattern to degloss the planks.
  • sweep the bulk of dust off and use the pressure washer again to thoroughly rinse the deck of any debris or sanding dust.
  • Allow the deck to dry completely.
  • Prime the deck. Using your primer you want to apply a smooth, even coat of primer to the entire deck surface. Most primers will require at least 2 hours to dry before the topcoat can be applied. Read the primer instructions for recommended times for your primer brand, though.
  • When priming you want to coat the entire plank, and make sure any embossed grain patterns are filled. Attempt to get as thin as possible with the primer without leaving any exposed areas.
  • Paint the deck. Once the primer is dried or cured you can apply your color paint to the deck. Once again, make sure you apply smooth, thin layers to cover the deck and primer without losing any of the details. If you paint too thick, drying time will be raised and you may lose the grain pattern detail.
  • Apply a second coat after the recommended wait time. A third coat may be needed in some rare cases, so inspect the entire deck after the second coat fully dries.

Frequently Asked Questions

faq can you paint trex or composite decking

Here, we will answer the more commonly asked questions about painting Trex or composite decking.

Q. Can I use stain instead of paint on a composite deck?

  • Yes. If you wish to stain the deck instead of painting, you certainly can do that. Composite decks will accept a stain, but it needs to be a high quality stain, such as Cabot brand oils . You want to avoid water-based stains, though, as they will peel off rapidly.

Q. Can I use other options besides stains or paints for my composite deck?

  • There are instances where a different coating may be needed. Decking near a pool or spa, for example, would make great use of a rubber surface paint, like Liquid Rubber , or an epoxy paint to add durability. These will cover any grain pattern your deck has, though, so be warned the look will be altered.

Q. Can I stain a capped composite deck?

  • This should be avoided as the stain won’t be thick enough to penetrate the plastic capping. Instead you will want to apply two layers of latex paint to a capped composite deck to ensure even coverage and longer lasting finish.

Painting a Trex or composite deck is something that isn’t required. You may find an instance here and there where it is needed but in most cases, the deck you order and install will remain color-fast and durable for life.

If you do find that you need to paint or stain your composite deck, though, it can be done. As we have outlined here it is a straightforward process, just a time-consuming one. Once you apply paint to your composite deck, be ready to reapply every couple of years, though.

Lumberock puts the “rock” in rock-hard, with composite decking that offers superior durability and longevity. Its decks are impervious to staining, insect damage, mold and mildew growth, and noticeable fading. Much of this comes down to the fact that the boards are completely synthetic. Some composite deck boards include a portion of organic material, such as sawdust, and this can break down and rot or become a source of mildew growth. Lumberock decking contains no organic materials, making it exceptionally long-lasting.

Lumberock is marine-grade, fully waterproof, and slip-resistant, with UV-protecting color additives to prevent noticeable fading. Each product from Lumberock comes with a limited lifetime warranty, meaning that if a defect arises after normal use and with preventative care measures, the company will supply a replacement product.

One of the drawbacks of Lumberock composite decking is that it is only available in 12 colors. However, these do include both classic and unconventional options, from gray and tan to white and green, offering homeowners more bold and vibrant shades even with a comparatively limited selection.

MoistureShield decking is appropriately named since its composite decking boards are heavily resistant to moisture. With wood fibers that are each surrounded by plastic, the boards resist water absorption which means no rotting, no warping, and no cracking. These boards are some of the best available if you plan to install them directly on the ground, near water, or underwater. With MoistureShield’s Solid Core, they will maintain their integrity even when permanently submerged.

Fifty-year structural warranties back up all of the MoistureShield decking products, offering customers long-term peace of mind. These composite boards also come with additional options, such as DiamondDefense Coating, which improves the scratch and fade resistance of the boards so they look new for longer. Another option is CoolDeck Technology, used to reduce the heat of the decking in hot temperatures by up to 35% for greater comfort underfoot. According to MoistureShield, regular composite decking can reach up to 76 F hotter than the air temperature, so on an average 80 F day, regular decking could reach a temperature over 150 F, whereas with a CoolDeck coating, the deck would sit in the mid-90s.

MoistureShield boards can be installed by pros or DIY enthusiasts, and helpful DIY guides can be found on their website to assist customers with every aspect of installation. No specialist tools are needed, which means anyone with woodworking tools such as a circular saw, nail gun, and hammer, will be well-equipped to install this decking. Each board is reversible as well, meaning either side can be front-facing.

The Bottom Line

All of the brands we reviewed represent excellent options for customers looking for composite decking. Overall, we found the best composite decking brand to be Trex, since it offers a well-rounded combination of pricing, installation, and color options, alongside high-performing products that are resistant to fading, staining, rotting, cracking, and insect damage.

Ultimately though, the best composite decking brand may differ for each individual depending on installation areas and priorities. Fiberon stands out by far as the best budget option, with composite decking boards that are comparable in price to treated, real wood decking boards. TimberTech offers the best boards for a natural wood look if style is a main concern. For customers prioritizing moisture resistance, Lumberock and MoistureShield present the best options, since they can be submerged in water without degrading.

Things To Consider When Buying Composite Decking

Durability and longevity.

One advantage that makes composite decking more favorable than real wood decking is the fact that it is so much more durable and long-lasting. If you’re paying a premium for composite decking, you’ll want to know that it will stand the test of time without the need for repairs or replacement.

Most composite decking boards, by design, will be significantly more durable compared to real wood decking boards, but consider how the durability and longevity of a composite decking product will stand up against other composite decking products. The warranty supplied with each type of composite decking is a good indicator in terms of longevity. This tells you how confident the company is that its decking will last a specific number of years.

The longevity of composite decking will also be affected by how well you care for it. “To improve the longevity, I advise regularly brushing the area with a soft brush,” says Greg Hayward, owner and director at Evergreen Gardening. He adds, “Keeping debris off the deck will improve its look but also stop dirt discoloration and the trapping of moisture, causing mold to form. I would also advise moving any pots or planters around the decking to prevent possible uneven fading.”

Budget and Cost

The initial cost of a composite deck will be significant. Many composite decking brands will give an indication of pricing on their websites, though in most cases, you will need to request a specific quote to get a more accurate costing.

When creating costings for your composite deck, bear in mind the additional cost of hardware and fastenings, as well as any preparation works that will need to be carried out on-site, such as leveling of the ground or a raised structure to fix the decking boards onto. If a professional is installing the deck, labor costs will also need to be considered.

For wooden decks, annual maintenance costs will also need to be included in calculations, but fortunately, this is typically not an expense associated with composite decking. Professor Pascal Hubert, an expert in composite materials and president of the International Committee on Composite Materials, comments, “Polymer composite decking is typically more expensive than treated wood or weather-resistant lumber material. However, polymer composites are more durable, so the application of these materials for decking would be more cost-effective.”

Essentially, you’ll be saving in the long term with use of composite materials versus natural wood.

Aesthetics and Design Options

The look of a new composite deck is equally as important as its functionality and practicality for most customers. When selecting a composite decking brand, consider the color and texture options available, as well as the board dimensions. These elements can transform the look of a deck and enhance – or destroy – visual appeal.

For a composite deck that mimics the look of natural lumber, opt for a neutral shade in a brown or gray tone, with a wood grain texture finish. For a painted look, consider a flat finish in a more vivid color such as blue, black, or green. Fastenings are also a vital consideration in determining the overall aesthetic of a composite deck. Hidden fastenings are supported by many brands, which give a cleaner and sleeker look, while face fastenings are the standard option for a more traditional finish.

You can often order free or low-cost samples of a brand’s decking to feel the textures and see the color up close.

Slip Resistance and Safety Features

The safety features of composite decking are important, especially for families with young children, seniors, or those with mobility issues. Composite decking can become slippery when wet, which presents a safety hazard. Consider composite decking boards that offer improved slip resistance to help minimize the risk of slipping when there is moisture on the boards.

Composite decking that is resistant to the growth of mold and mildew will also promote better safety since this can also contribute to slips and falls. Look for composite decks that do not contain organic material, as organic materials are where mold and mildew will thrive. Deck boards that have been coated or capped in a synthetic material will also help to limit the growth of slippery mold and mildew.

Resistance to Fading and Stains

Composite decking that is resistant to fading and staining can stay looking new for longer, and this visual longevity represents better value. Some composite decking brands offer separate fading and staining warranties to their structural warranties. These tell you how resistant to fading you can expect each product to be, though no composite decking is 100% resistant to fading caused by exposure to UV light.

“UV radiations affect all polymer materials; they cause photochemical discoloration from white to yellow. Longer term effect of UV-radiation is the appearance of surface cracks and embrittlement,” says Hubert.

Look for brands and board lines that have some sort of UV resistance or protection to prolong the bright color and overall look of your decking.

How We Chose the Best Composite Decking

To create this list of the best composite decking brands at U.S. News 360 Reviews, our contributor consulted with numerous experts, including Professor Pascal Hubert of McGill University and president of the International Committee on Composite Materials; Greg Hayward, owner and director at Evergreen Gardening ; Steve Whetzell II, director of business development at Armor Fence, Deck & Patio ; and Andy Emilio, owner of King City Decks . We conducted thorough research, taking into account the durability, stain and fade resistance, moisture resistance, ease of installation, and reputation of each brand. We then narrowed down our list by assessing the price options, color and finish options, and warranties offered by each brand. Our takeaway? Composite decking offers a time- and money-saving alternative to traditional lumber decking. Ranging in texture, color, and finish, composite decking can add durability and moisture resistance to any deck area, dry or wet.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Our contributors and editors have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Karli Edmondson-Matthews , the author of this piece, has more than a decade of product reviewing experience for home and garden brands. Karli is the former digital editor of Architecture Magazine and has written for the likes of OutHounds and Trees.com. As a mom of two young girls, the anti-slip rating of composite decking is particularly important to Karli and her accident-prone kids.

Unlike wood decking, composite decking is made from a combination of synthetic materials, such as recycled plastics, along with wood fibers. This makes composite decking a more sustainable option, and it also presents an improved product for customers. Composite decking lasts significantly longer than wood decking and requires much less maintenance. Unlike wood decking, good composite decking will not rot, splinter, warp, split, crack, fade, or stain. Composite decking never needs to be sanded, stained, sealed, or painted, and it will not fall victim to pests, such as termites, like wooden decking can.

Andy Emilio from King City Decks advises that composite decking can last more than three times as long as traditional wooden decking. He says, “With proper care, the lifespan of a wood deck may be 25 years. No care and it goes down to 10 years. The composites are designed to last well over 30 years, usually much longer. All this with very little care other than a spring soapy rinsing.”

To get a better understanding of how long a specific composite decking product will last, look at the warranties offered by each brand. Typically lifespans range from a base of 30 years to 50 years.

Like regular traditional decking, composite decking can become slippery when wet, though there is a spectrum of slipperiness, depending on the brand and product line. Some composite decking brands offer superior slip resistance. Even when composite decking is sold as “slip-resistant,” it’s still important to take care in order to avoid injury.

Composite decking can be installed over old wood, but this isn’t best practice. It might save time to build a new composite deck on top of an old wooden deck, but you will likely be creating problems for yourself further down the line. Installing a composite deck on top of wood can hinder air circulation and drainage, and it can also affect the structural integrity of your new deck since the wooden deck beneath could rot.

Installing composite decking over a wooden frame is a different matter. Steve Whetzell, director of business development at Armor Fence, Deck & Patio, explains that since composite decking is heavier than wood, some criteria need to be met before it can be installed on wooden framing. He says, “When a composite deck is being used on an existing platform, assuming that it passes the inspections and meets the span requirements, it can be installed successfully.”

Mold is less likely to grow on composite decking compared with traditional wooden decking, but it does happen. Mold grows best on organic surfaces, like wood, and since composite decking is predominantly made from synthetic materials, the formation of mold is less common. However, mold can grow on the dirt or dust that sits on the surface of composite deck boards; thus, it’s a good idea to routinely sweep and wash them down with soap and water.

The Best Alternative to Composite Decking Boards

Composite decking and decking boards.

Composite is a familiar term in the decking industry and likely something we’ve all heard of before. Composite decking rose in popularity throughout the 1990s as consumers sought a more maintenance free alternative to traditional pressure treated wood decking. Fast forward to today, and what was once an exciting new innovation, has now become a bit tarnished and outdated. As the market stands saturated with different composite options, many have taken note of an overall decline in quality as well as come pretty hefty drawbacks that have lead homeowners and builders alike searching for alternative decking materials.

Popularity of composite decking

It’s really not a surprise, given the limited options that were available at the time, that the composite decking segment grew as much as it did. The majority of homeowners were drawn to the idea of composite decking for one or more of these four main reasons:

  • Low maintenance needs Composite is moisture resistant and only requires basic cleaning (if using a capped composite board).
  • Sustainability Many manufacturers use recycled plastic in their composites. Plus with increased longevity, fewer repairs and replacements would theoretically be needed keeping old materials out of landfills for longer.
  • Variety of options Composite decking is offered in many different colors and wood grain patterns.
  • Easy hidden fastening system Some composites are available with side grooves to use a hidden fastening system, eliminating most visible fasteners (i.e. screw heads).

Looking at these selling features alone, a composite deck sounds great and for many it was, but not everything is always as it seems, making it important to also review the anti composite arguments to try to gain a more full picture perspective.

Inherent issues of composite decking

composite decking

Despite having a few good advantages, composite decking also its disadvantages, some of which even negate its original benefits. These issues include:

  • Fake wood appearance While composite decking tries to mimic the natural beauty of real wood, the fact remains that achieving the same character just isn’t doable with plastic. Many homeowners dislike the plastic look of even the most expensive composite decking options, which are often the closest to real wood beauty.
  • Prone to scratches and dents Composite decking scratches relatively easily. Dents and scratches from moving patio furniture, the family dog’s nails or kids playing on the deck can all leave irreversible damage. Plus if you penetrate the board beyond its protective plastic cap, serious performance issues can occur if the composite core is exposed.
  • Very hot surface in sunlight One of the biggest complaints about composite decking is how hot it gets in the sun. Most composites are wrapped with a plastic coating to protect the composite core, however plastic gets hot when the sun hits it, making composite decking extremely uncomfortable to walk on. The darker the color, the hotter it will get, so bear this in mind.
  • Very heavy but lacking strength Composite decking is surprisingly heavy compared to classic wood decking, however that doesn’t exactly equate to it being stronger. In fact, compared to modified wood decking, composite is significantly weaker.
  • May not be as eco-friendly as promised Composite decking is often pushed hard as being a green material, however, what many eco-conscious homeowners don’t realize is that composite decking has a significant carbon footprint due to its intensive manufacturing process. Plus when it comes to the end of your deck’s life, recycling or repurposing composite decking doesn’t always work out.

Composite decking is far from a perfect product. Although there are certainly homeowners that will find composite decking to be a fine material for their needs, its worth it to think about superior alternative to composite decking if beauty, durability and sustainability are important to you.

Modified wood beats the competition

Kebony wood decking

( The Sound of Music , by Mareiner Holz)

Modified wood is arguably the best decking material on the market for homeowners, when it comes to composite decking alternatives. Even tropical hardwoods known for their density and durability can’t quite check off all the boxes that modified wood can.

The major benefits of modified wood include:

  • Ease of care No decking material is truly “maintenance-free”, but modified wood is about as close as you can get. Simple cleaning with water, and perhaps a gentle cleanser on tough spots, are all you need. Although composite is very similar in this aspect, remember that composite decking can’t be sanded if staining or surface scratches occur, while modified wood can.
  • A truly green product Modified wood is harvested from responsibly managed forests and made of fast-growing sustainable wood species. The modification process uses a bio-based, non-toxic liquid, making it safe for your family and the environment. Furthermore, old modified wood can be disposed of just like any other natural, wood product. You won’t be contributing to landfill pollution when you choose modified wood.
  • Classic wood beauty There is nothing more beautiful than a wood deck. Wood has a warm ambiance to it and makes for a very inviting entertainment or relaxation space. Modified wood decks also age to a beautiful, silver patina over time. Plus because modified wood is extremely strong, it won’t splinter like other real wood decking options do.
  • Resistance to the elements Modified wood is super dense and can handle all types of weather conditions. Despite being made of wood, it’s both moisture- and pest-resistant. This material won’t splinter, crack or peel. Exposure to intense sun will hasten the natural silvering, but won’t harm the material. Plus, modified wood is cooler to the touch and more “barefoot-friendly” than composites. Keep in mind that you can also use modified wood in all aspects of deck design, including structural support, seating, siding, planters, benches and more – a benefit you won’t have with composite decking.
  • Cost vs value Modified wood is perfectly priced considering all of the advantages it has. It offers as much strength as tropical hardwoods, but without the hefty price tag. The overall lifecycle costs of modified wood compared to composite decking and the impact on your home’s value make modified wood the wiser investment.

All in all, modified wood outperforms composite decking in nearly all categories. Homeowners stuck between standard wood and composite would do well to opt for modified wood over either option. Not only is modified wood a highly attractive material, but its combination of longevity, overall resilience and convenient care needs should put it at the top of any list.

Should We Use Composite Decking? Which Composite Deck Products Are Best?

By lynnette, choicedek , composite decking , green products and energy savings , porches decks and patios , stairs and railings , timbertech deck.

Our current dilemma: Whether to use composite decking for the porches and decks of our new log home or not.

building-deck

First thought… It’s a log home/ Why in the world would we want to use non-log products in our all-log dream home? I know. I certainly feel guilty even thinking about using “fake wood” in our log home. But if I can get a similar look and quality product with less maintenance, then I’m all for it.

Second thought… Composite decking uses recycled materials, is longer lasting, and requires less maintenance & upkeep. I can just look out our back window for a firsthand reminder of the problems we’ve had with our wood deck, wood railings, wood stairs, and wood fence. (And they’re only 5 years old!)

Of course the biggest drawback to using composite decking is that “fake” look that sometimes results. That is the biggest factor holding us back at this point.

So I’m wondering… Have any of you used the newer composite decking materials for decks or porches? Or, perhaps you’ve seen a completed project (in person) that was built using composite decking?

If so, we welcome your thoughts…

Some Basic Facts

Yesterday, I made a visit to the local Home Depot and Lowes . I was hoping I’d be able to touch and feel and possibly bring home some samples of their composite decking products.

I could touch and feel the tall stack of boards for each brand that Lowe’s and Home Depot had on display. But neither store offered “samples”.

What a shame. It seems to me that homeowners might like to see products side-by-side. And, if they’re anything like me, they would appreciate being able to make comparisons in the comfort of their own home, under different lighting, as well as indoors vs outdoors.

And let’s face it… color choice is probably the second most important factor, after the overall “look” of these composite decks. Not only is it a big investment we’re talking about here. But you could actually be unhappy for a number of years if you don’t get the end result you were hoping for.

Differences In Deck Boards

I have a lot more research to do at this point regarding the wide range of composite decking choices available to us.

composite-decking-trex-and-timbertech

Fortunately, the folks at Lowe’s were incredibly helpful in one respect.

The lady behind the counter in the “Contractors” area said that based on what she hears from the contractors who buy their decks from Lowe’s, ChoiceDek is without a doubt the superior product. (The other brand that Lowe’s sells is Trex .)

When I asked why ChoiceDek had the lead among contractors , she showed me a side-by-side comparison of ChoiceDek and Trex. She said the grooved channels on the bottom of the boards made by ChoiceDek are highly preferred due to their ability to prevent bowing, warping, and splitting. She said while she hears a lot of positive remarks about the ChoiceDek, the contractors haven’t had many good things to say for the Trex product that Lowe’s also carries.

Some Concerns I Have About Composite Decking

  • Color choices
  • Natural looking vs fake looking
  • Mold issues
  • Types of screws/fasteners used
  • The ability to use “underdecking”
  • Cost compared to wood decks
  • Codes issues (I’ve heard some composite decks don’t meet local codes)
  • Some maintenance will inevitably be required… is it easy?
  • Stains (from spills, grease, etc.)
  • How they weather and hold up over time… a long time

I’ll let you know what we ultimately decide. As I said, I have a lot more homework to do.

Here are 10 reasons to choose real wood decking .

What About IPE?

For the record, we also briefly considered using IPE (pronounced “ee-pay”) for our decks.

ipe-deck-furniture

The IPE deck is made of Brazilian Walnut (also known as Ironwood or Ipe wood), and it is naturally resistant to rot and decay.

IPE is 8 times harder than California Redwood, and has the highest rating for termite resistance. This imported hardwood is the finest quality wood available for building outdoor decks, furniture and fencing. Source

We had a change of heart as soon as we learned how quickly the color fades unless you re-oil the entire deck at least every year. More than likely, you’d have to re-oil it twice a year — including in all those cracks and crevices!

It is the most beautiful deck product in the world though.

More About ChoiceDek Composite Decking

For the record, the brochure I got from Lowe’s says they carry “ChoiceDek Premium” by Weyerhauser.

Here are some fun facts about ChoiceDek:

Here are the features and benefits of ChoiceDek composite lumber.

Other Composite Decking Companies

To be honest, the only one from this list we are considering is IPE. But here are several composite decking choices if you wish to do your own research.

  • TimberTech — they have lots of nice colors.
  • IPE Decking (pronounced “ee-pay”) — available from places like IPE Depot  and East Teak , among others.
  • Evergrain — they say that “ no one has a grained product that compares to EverGrain .”
  • Symmatrix Decking  — from The Dow Company.
  • LockDry  — it’s waterproof aluminum decking.
  • DeckRite  — a 3-ply laminated membrane consisting of a heavy-duty polyester fabric encapsulated between 2 vinyl films.
  • Veranda Composite Decking — sold exclusively at Home Depot.

Tips On Staining Composite Boards…

The wood particles in wood-and-plastic composite decking are just as vulnerable to the sun as solid wood and will turn dingy over time. Specialized semitransparent stains for composites allow you to restore or change the color of weatherbeaten decking. These last a year or two. You can also use a standard solid-color acrylic deck finish and get 3 to 5 years of service. High-traffic areas may need more frequent attention.  — This Old House

Your complete guide to cladding

What is cladding.

Cladding is a construction term that refers to the process of applying one building material over another, primarily to add a layer or protection against the environment. While an important factor in weather resistance, cladding also improves the insulating properties and aesthetic appearance of a building.

A properly installed cladding system helps a building resist cracking caused by extreme temperature fluctuations, sunlight, strong winds and airborne pollutants such as mold. Cladding protects the material underneath from moisture caused by rain and snow and, with certain materials, can require less annual maintenance.

Cladding Installation Guide

Trex composite cladding faqs.

With just 4 components that go into the application of the open-joint Trex cladding, installation is as easy as it is breezy. Once a water-resistant barrier and metal or wood furring strips have been installed, you’re ready to install the Trex cladding boards with one of the recommended fasteners. See the full instructions here: Cladding Install Instructions.

The unyielding shell of our high-performance Trex Transcend cladding—means it never needs painting or staining. The rich color and protective finish are engineered right into the shell, and the shell is designed to remain free of rotting, splitting, splintering, and insect damage for 25 or 50 years. Not to mention, painting Trex decking may void your warranty.

Trex cladding is warranted for 50 years in a residential application and 25 years for commercial applications.

While Trex cladding boards are manufactured for the outdoors, they are not waterproof, nor intended to be submerged in water for long periods of time. With the recommended installation allowing for an open-joint system in addition to the recommended furring strips – the boards will get the necessary drainage and airflow to perform as intended.

A rainscreen is a ventilated system that sits lifted off a water-resistant surface of a building’s exterior wall.
