Tyler The Creator, Kali Uchis & Vince Staples Bring Ambitious ‘Call Me If Your Get Lost Tour’ To Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)
- By Killian Young
With thousands of screaming fans shaking Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on February 28th, Tyler, the Creator staged his most ambitious live show yet as part of the “Call Me If You Get Lost Tour.”
The last time Glide covered Tyler, the Creator was at his standout headlining spot at Outside Lands . This time around, the rapper proved that he could still up the ante: more fiery pyrotechnics, more dynamic set-pieces, more command of a rapt audience.
Here are five memorable moments from the show:
Kali Uchis, Vince Staples, Teezo Touchdown Set the Stage
A trio of openers helped get the crowd hyped leading up to Tyler, the Creator’s headlining set. Teezo Touchdown kicked things off with a buzz – literally, as he wielded a chainsaw. He leaned into the construction theme of his set design by awarding the “hardest hard hat” to the fan going the wildest in the crowd. Next up, Vince Staples took the arena by storm from the B-stage, where he deftly engaged the audience in all directions. He memorably closed his set with his hit “Norf Norf” to loud cheers from the audience, accentuating the “I ain’t never ran from nothing but the police” chorus with an alternating red and blue lighting motif. Kali Uchis’ arrival on stage was heralded by a wave of fervent screams that closely matched Tyler, the Creator’s reception. The singer impressed with her hits like “Dead to Me,” “i want war (BUT I NEED PEACE)”, “After the Storm,” and “telepatía,” as well as her tight choreography with her backup dancers.
Rolls Royce Pull Up
As the house lights went dark, a massive wave of screams rippled through the eager crowd. The audience got an immediate sense of the grandeur of the set from the get-go, as Tyler, the Creator rapped “SIR BAUDELAIRE” from the roof of a 1939 Rolls Royce Wraith. Behind the car, there was a huge, two-story house facade. As he exited the vehicle, he strafed across the stage, illuminated by the flash and crackle of fireworks on “CORSO.” And then on “LEMONHEAD,” he ascended the house’s staircase, rapping from the balcony over the track’s propulsive beat while the crowd jumped along.
Setting Sail
For the smooth jam “WUSYANAME,” Tyler, the Creator hopped in a huge boat, which drifted from the main stage to the B-stage. When it docked in the middle of the general admission crowd, the rapper shifted gears to some of his older material.
“I’m guessing a quarter of you wouldn’t mind if I went back in my discography,” Tyler, the Creator commented to the crowd. Judging by the fierce roar, it was closer to 100% approval. While on the B-stage, he rumbled through some of his biggest earlier hits. Standouts included his call-and-response with the audience for “911,” the huge singalong (with some Detroit-centric ad libs thrown in) on “See You Again,” and the stark beat of “Yonkers.” This phase of the set ended with “Tamale,” as the arena bounced along to the rapid-fire beat.
Return Voyage
After “Tamale,” Tyler, the Creator hopped back in the boat, which slowly set sail back towards the main stage. At a couple points en route, the boat paused, allowing him to croon “I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE” to the crowd, showing off his vocal chops. As the boat rocked back and forth, the excellent set design helped give the illusion that Tyler, the Creator was floating on a sea of undulating arms raised by exuberant fans.
Upon returning to the main stage, Tyler, the Creator stood still, with pulsing lights and the accelerating instrumentals amping up the audience toward “Who Dat Boy.” As the track was unleashed, plumes of fire shot up behind Tyler, the Creator, and the crowd exploded to one of the most energetic songs of the entire set.
No Encore Needed
On the penultimate track “NEW MAGIC WAND,” Tyler, the Creator explained this as his “favorite song”: “It has a lot of the elements of why I like making music – melody, harmony, the drum goes hard. … It’s more feeling than trying to be good.”
He headbanged with such ferocity that he ended up sprawled on the floor. As the track surpassed its halfway point, it broke down into a discordant beat punctuated by harsh strobe lights. As the song kicked back in, Tyler, the Creator was once again illuminated by plumes of flames.
The set fittingly closed with the triumphant “RUNITUP.” As the crowd eagerly sang along one last time, Tyler, the Creator urged them to get louder. More fireworks shot up on stage as the fans bounced along with each of Tyler, the Creator’s jumps. And with that, he took a deep bow, then picked up two suitcases and walked through the front door of the house facade.
The entire set ran for a pretty tight hour and 20 minutes. While the crowd would’ve devoured more songs, the fact that there was no encore worked in terms of the show’s overall journey: “Here today, but gone tomorrow / We gon’ run it up.”

“Me veía terrible. Le dije al neg… que no y él dijo: ‘¿Qué tal si lo filmamos?'”
A$AP Rocky sale a tocar

Coachella review: Tyler, the Creator shines again but follows disappointing festival trend
I wanted this review to be about how spectacular Tyler, the Creator was Saturday night.
And make no mistake, he was spectacular — whether he was joking about the pitfalls of getting older, seeming to be thrown off a fake cliff by an actor portraying some kind of beast or rapping his heart out atop towering replicas of the kind of monuments you would expect to see in Canyonlands or Monument Valley.
But as great as the clearly-in-his prime rapper was, I wouldn’t be doing my so-called journalistic duty if I didn’t call out what I think has clearly become a thorny but real shortcoming with this year’s festival and perhaps the larger Coachella enterprise in general: Weekend 2 has simply been unable to compete with the grandiosity of Weekend 1.
More: Coachella 2024: Here's everything Tyler the Creator played during Weekend 2
Because here’s the deal: Having attended both of Tyler’s 2024 Coachella sets, I can report that Weekend 1 goers were treated to nearly all of the same attributes that made his Saturday set so thrilling , including the blockbuster flying entrance and exit, incredible National Park-like set (probably the best I have ever seen at the festival) and most of the same songs (even some of the jokes were the same).
But you know what else they got? Perhaps equally as exciting guest appearances by Donald Glover, ASAP Rocky, Kali Uchis and, most memorable of all, R&B legend Charlie Wilson, with whom Tyler delivered one of the unique moments of the entire festival when he performed a piano version of Tyler’s hit “EARFQUAKE."
So what did Weekend 2 get? A fun guest appearance from Earl Sweatshirt and … no one else. No offense to Earl, a popular rapper — and member of Tyler's alternative hip-hop music collective Odd Future — who I know many had been clamoring to see perform AssMilk with Tyler, but he alone just wasn’t a match for the buffet of guests Weekend 1 goers were treated to (again, to be fair, I’m not sure there are many singular artists who could equal out those names).
To be clear, this problem is far from unique to Tyler and probably not his fault. In fact, part of why I’m calling it out is his set was preceded by one from No Doubt that was as similarly spectacular as it was guestless (one week after their set was punctuated by an Olivia Rodrigo appearance ).
Now, of course guest appearances aren’t everything, and I am sure there were many in the crowd that couldn’t have cared less about who Tyler brought out — or if he even brought anyone at all. But at a time when Goldenvoice charges the same price for both weekends and much has been made of the fact that Weekend 2 has still not sold out while Weekend 1 did weeks ago, it seems worth asking if festivalgoers have gotten wise to the fact that Weekend 2 just doesn’t pack the same punch as Weekend 1.
Tyler, perhaps in an attempt to get ahead of the relative lackingness of his Weekend 2 set , made several comments about what he apparently felt was the superiority of the Weekend 2 crowd. You could also tell he was making an effort to make the guest-less songs special, including when he performed much of “EARFQUAKE” from the catwalk through the crowd.
But when he ended up providing an admittedly charming recounting of his favorite sets from the festival so far during a moment in which he had been performing with a guest last weekend, the comparative shortcomings of this set were more apparent then ever.
At one point, Tyler did seem to simultaneously mock both the ongoing weirdness surrounding Frank Ocean (who famously bombed during Weekend 1 of last year’s festival and did not return for Weekend 2) and the lack of guests when he asked the crowd to sing Ocean’s portion of their duet "She."
“That [expletive] ain’t coming out, nobody knows where he is,” said Tyler.
But as funny as that was, doesn’t the supposedly better Weekend 2 crowd deserve the same caliber of guests as Weekend 1 was treated to, not just jokes about their absence?

The pair performed “AssMilk,” their collaboration from Tyler, the Creator’s 2009 mixtape, Bastard , and “Rusty” from 2013’s Wolf . Following their “Rusty” performance, they hugged each other and Earl Sweatshirt said, “Look at the biggest show on Earth” complimenting his friend and the grand landscape-themed stage setup. Tyler, the Creator called Earl Sweatshirt his brother and said, “I love this guy so fucking much.”
