After cross-country marathon, enduro and E-enduro join reinvigorated UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from 2023

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) are pleased to announce that the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be further extended from 2023 with the introduction of enduro and E-enduro to the calendar. This follows the recent announcement of the addition of cross-country marathon (XCM) to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

The existing Enduro World Series (EWS) is elevated to UCI World Cup status and will feature alongside cross-country Olympic (XCO), cross-country short track (XCC) downhill (DHI) and XCM. All enduro events on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be one-day events.

Enduro (EDR) racing comprises several timed Special Stages - predominantly downhill - and Liaison Stages to reach the start of each Special Stage. On each Special Stage, riders start individually at regular intervals, with all their recorded times added up to decide the winner. To reach the start of each of the Special Stages, riders cover Liaison Stages either by bike or with mechanical assistance (chair lifts, trucks etc). Liaison Stages are not timed but riders must reach the start of the following Special Stage within an allocated time.

New at each round of enduro racing at the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be a points system for each timed Special Stage. An overall classification according to points won will decide the order of riders for the last Special Stage, with the rider who has accumulated most points setting off last.

E-Enduro (E-EDR) follows the same principle but the courses will be slightly different, including challenging technical climbs suited to the attributes of an enduro E-mountain bike.

The integration of enduro and E-enduro into the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is another development for the discipline since the UCI’s partnership with ESO Sports and Discovery Sports Events, two of WBD’s specialist sport organisations. The integration of XCM into the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup programme and the introduction of Under 23 categories for the XCC were announced in September .

Another enhancement to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from 2023 will be increased screen time for the Elite downhill competitions thanks to the introduction, at each downhill round, of a semi-final between the qualification and final. Featuring the top 60 Elite Men and top 15 Elite Women from qualifying, the downhill semi-final will see men outside the top 30 and women outside the top 10 enjoy broadcast coverage for the first time.

Forty Elite riders (30 men and 10 women) will qualify for the final, where the goal is to broadcast each of the 40 runs in their entirety live on WBD platforms.

In addition, thanks to the increased participation of Junior Women, a qualifying run will be introduced for this category, with the fastest 10 proceeding to the final. The Men Junior and Women Junior competitions will also be broadcast for the first time.

The amendments to the UCI Regulations for mountain bike which will come into force on 1st January 2023 can be consulted on the UCI website .

The full calendar of the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be published next week.

“Also thanks to our partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, the spectacular downhill racing will benefit from greater exposure that will enchant existing fans and attract new audiences. I cannot wait to witness this new extended UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from 2023.”

2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Enduro World Series Calendar Released

• All major mountain bike formats united under a combined calendar for the first time to support the growth of the sport.
• 15 rounds covering 34 races across 10 countries and 3 continents announced for 2023.
• ESO Sports and Discovery Sports Events partnering to deliver the UCI’s new vision for mountain bike.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) have unveiled the new calendar for the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Enduro World Series. The plan unifies all major mountain bike formats under one combined calendar for the first time and will take riders to ten countries across three continents.

As mountain bike enters a new era, riders and fans can look forward to cross-country Olympic, cross-country short track, downhill and enduro, aligning for the first time in the history of the sport. Further details around E-mountain bike enduro and cross-country marathon will be released in September 2022. The new-look calendar will see some mountain bike formats sit alongside one another for the first time, racing grouped by location to maximise sustainability and brand new venues making their global debut, while valued sites keep their place in the calendar.

The reinvigorated calendar was developed by the UCI in partnership with ESO Sports and Discovery Sports Events, two of WBD’s specialist sport organisations.

An enhanced and combined calendar to reflect the growth of mountain bike

With 15 rounds covering 34 races organised across the world, the 2023 combined calendar for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Enduro World Series will see action taking place in ten countries across three continents. Cross-country Olympic and cross-country short track each have nine rounds in total, while downhill and enduro each have eight. As well as brand new locations brought into the fold, established venues will welcome new formats onto their trails.

The new structure will reflect the growth of the sport, allowing each of mountain bike’s different formats to flourish, reach new audiences and enhance the experience for fans both on site and watching from home. ESO Sports, the owner and operator of the Enduro World Series (EWS) and in whom WBD recently invested, will drive the project to globally unify mountain bike and elevate it to new levels, in collaboration with the UCI. Discovery Sports Events, the global promoter and event management leader, is extending its relationship with the UCI to help promote the sport in support of further growing its global audience.

UCI President David Lappartient said: “The launch of the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Enduro World Series calendar marks a major step forward in our work to modernise mountain bike, one of our five Olympic disciplines.

“With the integration of enduro, and soon also of cross-country marathon and E-mountain bike enduro to the events of the calendar, which already includes cross-country Olympic, cross-country short track and downhill, the events will take on a new dimension, bringing together even more athletes and fans.

“We also look forward to introducing new hosts for some rounds while welcoming back traditional venues that have been greatly appreciated over the years. The partnership between the UCI and Warner Bros. Discovery will significantly increase the international exposure for mountain bike, allowing the sport to continue to grow globally.”

“We’ve done our best to group venues in close geographical proximity to reduce the season’s travel footprint and increase efficiencies for everyone on the tour. We’ll be hosting new event schedules combining formats that have never been combined before, giving riders a unique new experience and using the very best of the terrain available at each location to provide the best racing on the planet, while of course valued race tracks remain in the calendar.

“Calendar classics sprinkled with some new venues – 2023 is going to be an incredibly exciting first step towards our long term plans for mountain bike racing worldwide.”

Racing gets underway in March with an enduro double-header in Tasmania, Australia, first in new venue Maydena, followed by Derby.

Limburg-Valkenburg in the Netherlands makes its UCI Mountain Bike World Cup debut when it kicks off the cross-country season, with classic venue Nové Město na Moravě in the Czech Republic hosting the second round of the cross-country.

The races come thick and fast in June, with enduro heading to its spiritual home in Finale Ligure, Italy, followed by cross-country and downhill in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

From here it’s on to a huge week of racing in Leogang in Austria as, cross-country, downhill and enduro all take to the region’s famous mountains and converge at the same venue for the first time. Enduro then heads to Val di Fassa Trentino in Italy, while cross-country and downhill make their way to Val di Sole Trentino, Italy.

July and August will see an extended break from racing, allowing the athletes some time to rest and recover mid-season ahead of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships which take place in Glasgow and across Scotland (Great Britain) in August.

Racing then picks back up again at the end of August with cross-country and downhill heading to Vallnord Pal Arinsal in Andorra. All mountain bike formats then come together in France.

The final racing block takes place in North America. Snowshoe in the USA will serve as the penultimate round for cross-country and downhill, before the iconic surrounds of Mont-Sainte-Anne in Canada rounds out the season.

A new vision for mountain bike

As the UCI starts to deliver its new vision for the future of mountain bike, the organisation will seek to utilise WBD’s global scale and media platforms, whilst it has begun collaborating with the two WBD specialist organisations. ESO Sports is working in partnership with Discovery Sports Events to deliver the organisation, media production and broadcast, promotion and commercialisation of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

Chatel crowns inaugural UCI Enduro World Cup overall series winners

The first ever UCI Enduro World Cup drew to a close amongst some of Europe’s most iconic mountains, as the new series winners dropped into the finish bowl in Chatel to a rapturous French crowd.

The seventh and final round of the inaugural UCI Enduro World Cup, part of the UCI Mountain Bike World Series Festival Haute-Savoie, tested riders over a mammoth seven stage course that covered nearly 60km of trails in the famous Portes du Soleil area.

In the women’s competition, the overall series win was Isabeau Courdurier’s to lose. The Lapierre Zipp Collective racer only needed to put in a conservative effort in order to lift the new trophy, with Morgane Charre (Pivot Factory Racer) the lone rider who was theoretically capable of depriving the two times Enduro World Series overall winner the title. And despite Charre’s heroic efforts, the race win was not enough to stop Courdurier from securing the overall title.

Charre won today’s race by six seconds ahead of Courdurier in second place, while Harriet Harnden (Trek Factory Racing Gravity) took third place. The same three would find themselves on the overall series podium, but with Courdurier on the top step and Charre and Harnden in second and third respectively.

In the men’s race, series leader Richie Rude (Yeti/Fox Factory Racing) got off to a shaky start, with sixth place on the first stage whilst main series rival Jesse Melamed (Canyon CLLCTV) took the win. Melamed’s performance was a masterclass in consistency, with the reigning Enduro World Series overall winner taking four of the seven stages. The Canadian rider’s performance was awarded with the race win, with Alex Rudeau (Commencal Enduro Project) claiming second and Rude awarded the third step of the podium.

Rude’s third place would hand him his first UCI Enduro World Cup overall trophy to sit alongside the two Enduro World Series overall ones he’s garnered in the past. Melamed would take second in the overall, whilst Alex Rudeau would claim third.

In the U21 Women, the closest race in the category to date raged all day between Slovakia’s Simona Kuchynkova and Great Britain’s Emily Carrick-Anderson – with Kuchynkova clinching the win by just one hundredth of a second. Behind Carrick-Anderson was Switzerland’s Delia Da Mocogno.

However a strong season meant Emmy Lan (Forbidden Synthesis Team) won the overall title, with Elly Hoskin in second and Lily Planquart (Lapierre Zipp Collective) in third.

In the U21 Men it was Raphael Giambi (Specialized Enduro Team) who was fastest on the day, with Lisandru Bertini (Lapierre Zipp Collective) in second and Lief Rodgers of Canada in third. Bertini’s impressive record this year secured him the overall title, with Giambi in second and Australia’s Sascha Kim in third place.

Rude’s win would secure Yeti/Fox Factory Race Team the win in the team competition.

So gutted for Emily Carrick-Anderson. After such an amazing race to lose the Chatel race by a fraction of a second…

Any thoughts on what makes the series strong from a UK women’s perspective but less succesful with the men?

Congratulations to the winners. The big question is, with various teams shutting down or leaving Enduro racing, and what feels like almost zero promotion and coverage of the series this year, either buy the promoters of the cycling press, is this the last meaningful year of world Enduro racing?

i was wondering the same. 5 British women in the top 20. No British men. And Baraona, Harden, Connelly all good enough to challenge the mighty Isabeau Courdurier and win it! Could it be the legacy of Tracy Mosley?

Where is this stuff televised? Only thing I could find yesterday afternoon was Ed Masters preview on YouTube.

@mtbfix there’s no ‘live’ coverage of the Enduro.

UK men are having good success in DH with Jordan, Laurie, Danny, Matt, Bernard, Joe & more all podium contenders.

Perhaps UK women are finding enduro more accessible though?

I think they need a rethink with Enduro; one day events this year haven’t seemed as interesting. And there does seem to be a level of dissatisfaction with the series.

I think Live coverage is going to be a while, if at all; look at motorcycle EnduroGP…..that relies on highlights on You Tube – no live coverage at all. Hard Enduro is similar, with only the Erzbergrodeo streamed live as its in one venue. I suspect both those sports have more money, and they can’t provide live coverage.

Even the WRC has gone All Live in the last few years.

I think they should revert to last year’s format, and try streaming the Saturday evening Pro Stage live, which is also the final stage on the Sunday – so the cameras can stay in the same place.

I think Tracy is definitely a factor, along with a strong grass roots scene (less so now) over the last 10 years. And the tweed valley factor helps. Some of it is just momentum too. When you’re riding with people who are winning, you get dragged up and along.

I know for Ella it was kind of a fluke that she ended up racing in Enduro rather than XC, and had she have been a guy that would have been a transition that probably wouldn’t have worked out (because she didn’t have the years or enduro or DH under her belt that would be helpful to differentiate from the pack). As it was with a smaller field to compete against she was able to shine a lot brighter a lot quicker and that generated its own momentum for her which has really worked out well in the long term.

2023 UCI World Cup and Enduro World Series calendar announced

UCI and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced the 2023 UCI World Cup and Enduro World Series calendar. 

A few notes from us:

• There are two races scheduled in France with no venues announced as of 12.08.2022
• Downhill, Enduro, and Cross-country races have two triple headers (Leogang and TBC in France)
• No DH until June, quite the off-season
• Snowshoe and MSA are pretty late in the season for ski resorts
• Similar venues to previous years, with only one new venue, Valkenburg, Netherlands (as announced on 12.08.2022)
• Eight Enduro World Series races
• Nine Cross-country races (18 if you count XCC and XCO)
• Seven Downhill races

UCI Enduro World Cup Val di Fassa Trentino

Welcome to Val di Fassa Trentino, amongst the majestic peaks of the Dolomites UNESCO world heritage site.

Surrounded by iconic mountains such as the Marmolada and Gran Vernel, next to those very climbs that have written glorious pages of world cycling history – including Passo Pordoi and Passo Sella – this place is home to Val di Fassa Bike District – a dynamic reality on the rise, a complete offer of bike-focussed services and activities, and another reason for this region to be more and more renowned all over the world. The network of trails and alpine routes specifically dedicated to mountain bikes is endless, with a number of very diverse routes that cover a great distance and take you to truly breath-taking scenery. To date, the bike park hosts 18 trails with different levels of difficulty, spread over the slopes around the valley, in and out of the woods, and includes some more natural lines – with easy access though, by means of eight modern and fast lifts by Fassa Lift. Val di Fassa Bike District’s reach goes beyond the valley itself thanks to the ‘Dolomiti Super Summer’, a single bike-pass that opens up a boundless area, including the legendary Sella Ronda Tour. This year, on the 24 and 25 June, Val di Fassa enters the UCI MTB World Cup 2023 calendar and crowns the growth path that the Fassa Bike organizing committee has charted over the years, thanks to the undisputed quality of their organisational leadership in world-class events, from 2015 to today The program offers a core event in Canazei, with paddock and expo areas, together with the trackside show of the Enduro Word Cup (EDR) races and, for the first time in Val di Fassa, the E-Enduro World Cup (EDR-E) competition. A great event that will offer you an exclusive perspective on our mountains and on the UCI MTB World Cup universe alike.

This season marks Poland's entry into the UCI World Cup series with events in downhill and enduro at Bielsko-Biała. Nestled in the Beskidy Mountains, the enduro trails here are beloved for their scenic routes and have been a focal point of the local mountain biking community since 2015.

UCI Cross-country Short Track World Cup: Haley Batten and Victor Koretzky win elite races in Araxa

Haley Batten and Victor Koretzky won, respectively, the women's and men's elite Cross-country Short Track races at the 2024 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series on the second day of the second round in Araxa, Brazil. Batten, the American, now leads the women's overall standings, while Koretzky, the French rider, leads the men's, with Sam Gaze in second and Luca Schwarzbauer third after two races.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

• Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
• You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
• There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
• Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
• If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
• You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
• You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
