uk travel journalists

Simon Calder is one of the UK's most trusted and recognised travel journalists, both for his editorial and his broadcast work across a variety of major platforms. His illustrious career, spanning nearly 30 years at The Independent, grew from humble beginnings - his first travel job was at Gatwick airport, where he cleaned aircraft for Laker Airways and later worked as a security officer. After a stint writing guidebooks on hitchhiking, Cuba, Central America and Amsterdam, he first became The Independent's travel correspondent in 1994, where he earned the moniker "the Man Who Pays His Way" because he doesn't accept free travel. Simon is a keen consumer champion, known for his work holding companies to account when they let holidaymakers down; since Brexit, he has single-handedly fought for UK airlines to implement the correct EU passport rules and for passengers unfairly denied boarding to be duly compensated. Besides his work online, he produces a daily podcast and presents films for The Independent, plus is often seen on the BBC, Sky News, ITV and more giving his expert advice or providing insight on the latest breaking travel stories. In 2022, Sue Perkins presented him with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the TravMedia Awards for his world-leading coverage of the travel rules during the coronavirus pandemic.

Travel journalist associations

With furlough, redundancies and the difficulty to find new work impacting all areas of the media, journalists hit particularly hard during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic have been those in the travel and tourism sector. As we wait and hope for the world to open back up and recovery to come to all industries, here are some associations supporting UK travel writers, editors, bloggers and photographers.

British Guild of Travel Writers

Welcomes : The guild’s community currently includes 250 accredited writers, bloggers, photographers and broadcasters – new applicants are screened and interviewed, and there’s a code of conduct to keep to.

When it was founded : 1960 (2020 marks its 60 th anniversary).

What are the benefits of joining : The BGTW press card – accredited across the world – allows for discounted or free entry to hundreds of attractions, and the guild has also teamed up with a variety of businesses for further member discounts. Particularly useful now people are working from home (where possible) the guild offers free use of the BGTW premium Zoom account and the ability to connect with fellow members.

Website : bgtw.org

International Travel Writers Alliance

Welcomes : ITWA represents journalists with a ‘genuine and professional’ interest in travelling across the globe to write, edit, broadcast or create images – 53% of members are based in Europe.

What are the benefits of joining : Its Alliance Press Card is recognised throughout the travel and tourism industry, and the twice-monthly Alliance Bulletin provides journalists with key information. The Alliance Syndication Network and The Alliance Opinion Forum also allow for the distribution of work and networking.

Website : internationaltravelwritersalliance.com

TravelwritersUK

Welcomes : Full-time professional journalists, bloggers, writers, broadcasters and photographers contributing to the mainstream media at professional rates of pay.

When it was founded : Originally started by travel journalist and author Andrew Sanger in 2000, the association was transferred to Blackheath Business Solutions in 2017.

What are the benefits of joining : TravelwritersUK aims to act as a ‘shop window’ for those in the travel journalism sector. Job opportunities are shared throughout the network and members are also given an association press card.

Website : travelwriters.co.uk/our-websites

If there are associations, unions, or support groups you’ve found particularly useful during your career in the media that we can highlight, please do get in touch  and let us know.

Got a Travel Question

Welcome to my site

Home pic on page

Twenty-first-century travellers are privileged to be able to see much of the world in greater safety and at a lower cost than any previous generation. The travel industry provides more choice and better value than ever – though sometimes things go wrong, and I do what I can to keep firms in line. In the UK, we are in the lucky position of enjoying the most competitive travel industry in the world. Most of the time, it works remarkably well and delivers formidable value. But with intense rivalry can come the pressure to cut corners or to treat customers with disrespect. So, whether it’s pretending flights are available for £10 when the actual price is nearer £100, or the dismal treatment of passengers when trains are disrupted, I try to challenge the travel industry when necessary – and to give praise where it’s due.

The best way to travel is … cheaply. Partly this means you can travel more, and partly it means you’re not isolated from the host community and can get closer to the soul of a place. The thickness of the mattress tends to be in inverse proportion to the proximity of the people. I have the strap-line “The man who pays his way” because I don’t accept free transport or accommodation from the travel trade. As a result of this policy, I tend to meet a lot of very interesting folk. The people with the best stories to tell live life in the cheap seats.

What our graduates say

Online interior design course review by Kylie B

I have acquired the confidence to present my work to the world, and I am pleased to report I have published a number of articles to date in various media outlets, including Out and About with Kids and Traveltalk magazines.

Online interior design course review by Deanne S

I find that travel journalism is a specialty art form like no other and the course gave me an opportunity to look at my travel writing in an entirely different light.

Online interior design course review by Cindi B

Thanks to my tutor, I now have a new confidence to pitch stories to publications, something that wasn’t ever on my radar... I encourage anyone with a desire to travel and write to give this course a go, you’ll never know what you can achieve until you try.

Online interior design course review by Ian W

My course tutor delivered some great feedback to me on each of my assignments, which gave me some excellent structure for writing more formal pieces for publishing.

Online interior design course review by Suzannah A

I learnt about style, tricks and using all my five senses to convey an experience. In short, the course taught me to be a more in-touch traveller.

Online interior design course review by Ellie S

The idea of earning enough money writing while travelling at the same time was always a dream of mine, and I feel so lucky to be in this position.

Online interior design course review by Roxana F

I finally dare to consider myself a travel journalist, and this self-confidence is worth more than anything.

Online interior design course review by Meryl J

I had never considered myself good enough to be a writer of any description. Travel journalism seemed attractive but felt beyond me. I approached The Ultimate Travel Journalism Course with the feeling that it would be good to know how to write about the experiences I encountered while travelling. Being published was not a priority. The real drive was sharing with others.

Online interior design course review by Pia L

Since finishing the course, I have been asked to write marketing and promotional materials for a find-a-local-tour-guide phone app.

Online interior design course review by Richard Villar

Richard Villar

I learned how to make myself heard in the huge global market, where so many good writers disappear in an instant. I also learned that good writing is manifestly important, but knowing where to place my work, how to develop contacts, and how to phrase my pitches in the most convincing way, is essential.

Online interior design course review by Kaitlin J

The course gave me a whole new sense of confidence and a much clearer understanding of the journalism industry and how I can make my writing skills work for me.

Online interior design course review by Danielle D

There is no way I would have had the confidence to approach these types of companies unless I felt well equipped and ready to compete with the big guns. The course has given me that confidence but also taught me the winning formula that is needed to get a foot in the door in this hard to crack industry.
