Room Layouts & Tours

dorm room with two beds

We offer a broad range of room styles - from traditional residence halls to apartments and suites - to help students live comfortably and thrive in their new community.

The majority of rooms in the residence halls are doubles (shared by two students). First-year students may also choose between triples or quad rooms while returning residents typically live in single rooms, apartments, or suites.

Our residence hall rooms are furnished with:

  • Twin size bed and mattress (Johnson-Whittle and Pyon-Chen Halls have XL twin bed frames)
  • Five-drawer dresser (except Oakland Hall and Prince Frederick Hall, which have three-drawer dressers)
  • Desk with drawer and shelf; desk chair
  • Personal data line

Each room also has window blinds, shared closet space, a smoke alarm, a fire suppression sprinkler, and an overhead light.

Explore our room layouts and take a virtual 360º tour of our residence halls to imagine yourself in your future home.

Please note that room layout and furniture may vary by building and room. Furniture in some rooms may also be reconfigured to meet student needs.

Semi-Suites

In semi-suites, students live in one of two double rooms connected by a semi-private bathroom shared by the four roommates.

Apartments & Suites

Apartments and suites give students the independence that comes from living off campus, with the added benefit of being centrally located right on campus! Apartments and suites range from 3-5 bedrooms and 1-2 baths. They include furnished living rooms and bedrooms and can house up to 8 students. Additionally, apartments have a fully equipped kitchen and dining room. Laundry facilities are available centrally within the community.

Each floor in traditional residence halls has large community bathrooms for students to share. Apartments and suites, as well as a few single and double rooms, have private bathrooms. Each hall offers at least one private, all-gender restroom.

University of Maryland - College Park Virtual Tour

Are you applying to umcp explore the campus using the virtual tour below..

Virtual tours are a great way to refresh your memory or to preview an on-site tour of University of Maryland - College Park.

Do I Really Need to Take a Tour?

At the beginning of your college search, a virtual tour can be a beneficial tool to explore the campus before your visit. When you do visit the campus, be sure to talk to current students about their experiences. A student perspective is a helpful way to gauge your future experience when attending UMCP. Already took an on-campus tour? It's inevitable. All of your college tours will blend, and you might forget the appearance of University of Maryland - College Park's library, dorms, or cafeteria. Use the virtual tour to jog your memory! With the interactive mapping tool below you can even explore the area surrounding the campus.

Use the resources below to start your virtual tour.

Using the Map

Click and drag the little orange person to a location on the map. Locations with panoramas appear as blue lines or blue dots when moving the orange person. The blue dots are panoramic views that you may swivel. The blue lines are paths that you can navigate along.

Panoramic View

You can "pan" or "swivel" the camera around by clicking on the image and dragging your mouse or finger. If you see a white arrow on the picture, you can click or tap on it to move in the direction of the arrow. This will also update the location of the little orange person on the map so you can get a better sense of where you are and what direction you are facing.

Campus Tour

Tour Routes

All Tours will begin at Turner Hall and either ends back at Turner Hall, or if your group wants to eat on-campus, ends at STAMP Student Union or one of the Dining Halls. Exact routes will depend on construction.

If your group is interested in attending a specific event or exploring a specific campus building, please note that when you request your tour.

Visiting a campus academic building is a common request we receive from many groups. While we anticipate that groups will be able to visit one of our academic buildings, we cannot guarantee that all groups will visit an academic building. In order to ensure that we do not disrupt ongoing classes, tour guides will make a case-by-case decision about whether or not tour groups are able to visit an academic building.

To find more information about booking tours view the items below:

Tours for groups of elementary and/or middle school students are provided by the Welcome Desk student staff. The 60-minute tour highlights key campus locations and includes stops at iconic campus landmarks.

We are very limited in our availability for Group Tours for the Spring 2024 semester. If you are interested in a Tour for an Elementary or Middle School Group, please email [email protected] with your preferred dates/times and approximate number of students. We will do our best to accommodate your request, but due to our limited availability, we may not be able to. If we are unable to accommodate your request for a Guided Tour, Groups are encouraged to consider a Self-Guided Tour .

We can host Group Tours Monday-Friday and our last available date for tours in the Spring 2024 semester will be Thursday, May 9, 2024.

We will begin accepting requests for Summer 2024 Tours on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Tours for alumni and business groups are provided by the Welcome Desk student staff. Please note that this classification does not include groups in high school or college. For $25 per tour guide, our staff will provide your group a 60-minute tour highlighting key campus locations and includes stops at iconic campus landmarks. To schedule your tour, please contact the student tour manager by sending an email to  [email protected] .

We are excited by your enthusiasm to tour our campus! We kindly will refer individuals in this category to arrange tours through the  UMD Admissions Office .

Self-Guided tours are a fun and interactive way for your group to tour our campus. Although self-guided tours do not involve a tour guide, they present all of the same information as a guided tour through a scavenger hunt and is a fun way to learn about the University.

All groups interested in a self-guided tour should stop by the Welcome Desk when they arrive to campus. A Welcome Desk Associate will provide you with a map and Visitor Guide that includes information about campus.

Please consider viewing the Visitor Guide prior to your arrival.

To see more of the campus virtually, we encourage you to explore our Campus Web Map .

University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) Transfers: 2024 Requirements, Dates, GPAs & More

How effective are university of maryland-college park (umd) virtual tours.

It depends how you use them. University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) is a hustling, bustling campus and community. The beauty of University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tours on CampusReel is that authentic video tours, made by real students, can be spectacular at capturing the University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) vibe. We also go well beyond the confines of the University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) campus by taking you around College Park. In traditional virtual tours, you will mostly see still, unengaging images and will not see the surrounding area at all – which is why CampusReel virtual tours are so important.

Can a University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tour replace a traditional in-person visit?

If you cannot visit University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) in person, then we can honestly say that we believe a CampusReel virtual tour of University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) is absolutely the most effective and holistic way to understand the University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) people, campus and community. However, if you do plan on visiting University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) and other colleges in person, we strongly recommend that you at least prescreen your college options on CampusReel before spending the time and money to visit. Most prospective families find that as soon as the step on campus, they instantly know whether or not they like the school – but they’ve already spent all that time and money getting there! Our goal is to eliminate all the time and money visiting University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) in person until you can make a strong educated guess that it’s worth the investment.

What places can I virtually tour at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)?

For your convenience, below is a list of University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) places you can virtually tour on CampusReel.

  • Stamp Union Program Council at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • RecWell Artificial Turf Field at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Fraternity Fields at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • The Coffee Bar at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Hornbake Plaza at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • McKeldin Library at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Point of Failure at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • South Campus Dining Hall at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Tawes Plaza Garden at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • University of Maryland University College at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • La Plata Beach at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • McKeldin Mall at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Robert H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Adele H. Stamp Student Union at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Frederick Douglass Square at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • The Graduate School at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Jim Henson Memorial at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Testudo at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)
  • Eppley Recreation Center at University of Maryland-College Park (UMD)

What are the downsides of a University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tour?

The downside of virtually touring University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) on CampusReel is that, admittedly, our technology does not yet mimic the exact feeling and experience of visiting University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) in person. We are working on this though! A common request we also receive from users is to add more perspectives (e.g. student guides) to the platform. Rest assured we are working on adding more CampusReel guides to the University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tour. However, our selection of guides still far outweighs the available perspectives of traditional virtual tour platforms.

What are the benefits of a University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tour?

The most obvious benefit of a University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) virtual tour on CampusReel is that is can be accessed from anywhere. This can save families a lot of time and money compared to visiting University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) in person . Another often overlooked benefit of a CampusReel virtual tour is that it goes far beyond a traditional in person tour University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) . Campus visits are limited both in time and scope – how are you expected to truly understand a college in a 1 hour tour? That’s why we stress the added benefit of CampusReel virtual tours – experience University of Maryland-College Park (UMD) and College Park during different seasons, days of the week, and even hours of the day. What’s game day like? What is finals week life? Again, traditional virtual touring platforms don’t include this benefit.

COLLEGE PARK, Md - The University of Maryland will host its 26th annual Maryland Day on Saturday, April 27, from 10am to 4pm EDT. The beloved campus-wide event will include over 300 free and family-friendly activities for guests to participate in, including sporting events, tours and demonstrations.

Guests can explore UMD’s expansive campus and history through touring its five Learning Neighborhoods: Terp Town Center, Art & Design Place, Ag Day Avenue, Science & Tech Way and Sports & Rec Row. Each neighborhood on campus will offer interactive events with endless possibilities of learning and fun. Highlights at this year’s event include:

Discover Do Good - meet student chance takers and difference makers tackling today’s grand challenges, make your own pledge to Do Good and get a chance to win Do Good swag

Fire Tornado - visit the Department of Fire Protection Engineering’s burn lab to see a 10-foot-tall fire tornado

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream - bet you haven’t had ice cream like this! This homemade specialty tastes great and is safe for all ages (while supplies last).

Community Love Mural - as part of the university’s Arts for All initiative, award-winning visual artist and LGBTQ activist Lisa Marie Thalhammer joins Maryland Day guests of all ages to paint a temporary “Love for All” mural on a series of panels

Insect Petting Zoo - imagine tarantulas, exotic insects, scorpions, bees and millipedes longer than your hand for you to look at and touch - if you dare

Meet Baxter the Robot - the Department of Kinesiology shows you the cool features of both a 3D and avatar Baxter. Watch Baxter solve puzzles and perform tasks independently and with people. You can also interact with avatar Baxter in virtual reality, in a version that uses AI and will be shared on a huge screen

Taste of the Chesapeake Bay - get a taste of how you can help the Chesapeake Bay by trying new recipes featuring the blue catfish with the University of Maryland Extension team. Hourly demonstrations begin at noon, limited samples available

Visitors can also pay a visit to the SECU Stadium at noon to watch the Maryland football team cap off their spring practice schedule with their annual Red-White spring game. For a complete list of activities, visit marylandday.umd.edu .

Maryland Day will take place rain or shine. Besides free on-campus parking, the university is also accessible via the Green Metro line at the College Park–University of Maryland metro station. Additionally, Shuttle-UM bus transportation will service main parking lots and garages.
