Get to know Carolina history through virtual tours
Want to learn more about the nation’s first public university? Whether you’re mapping out campus for the first time or diving deeper into everything Carolina, the Library’s virtual tours can show you the way.
Use the tours as a guide while you explore campus at your own pace or immerse yourself in campus history from the comfort of home. You’ll learn about the people who shaped Carolina history and get to know more about significant spaces on campus. Each tour offers a unique perspective – pick one or explore them all.
The Black and Carolina Blue Tour
Learn about Black life and history with this iconic UNC-Chapel Hill experience. Initially developed by Carolina students as part of an African American Studies course, this tour has introduced students and visitors to local histories of slavery, racism, memorialization and activism for more than 20 years. In 2023, the University Libraries revised and expanded the self-guided version of the tour, ensuring it remains accurate and accessible.
Climbing The Hill: Women in the History of UNC
Explore women’s history at Carolina through the spaces in which it took place. Originally curated by students in a Carolina history course, the tour explores women’s experiences as students, workers and community members on campus as they were shaped by race, class, age and sexuality. Scroll through the photo and document galleries and then follow the links within to learn more.
Queerolina: Experiences of Place and Space Through Oral Histories
Hear about queer life at Carolina in the words of those who have lived it. Queerolina collects oral histories of LGBTQIA+ students and links them to a map of campus. As you explore each space, the associated stories will highlight how LGBTQIA+ people are – and always have been – part of Carolina’s history.

Making virtual a reality: Online cancer course students, faculty come together for tours and talks
April 23, 2024
The course, created in 2020 to raise awareness about career and academic opportunities in cancer care and research, is led by Antonio Baines, PhD , associate professor of biological and biomedical sciences at NCCU, Checo J. Rorie, PhD , professor and chair of biology at NC A&T, and Bernard Weissman, PhD , professor of pathology & lab medicine and associate co-director of education at UNC Lineberger. The lectures are presented by researchers, physicians, public health experts, and other cancer specialists from the three universities and other institutions and cover a range of topics, including cancer disparities, treatment modalities, and career opportunities in cancer care and research.
The Exploring Cancer Spring Event provided an opportunity for students, staff and faculty from the three universities to meet in person, something that isn’t typically possible with an online course. Students toured facilities, including the CRISPR Screening Facility and the Translational Genomics Lab , and had the opportunity to learn about graduate programs at UNC, NC A&T and NCCU at an information fair. They also heard presentations from two cancer survivors and a keynote address from UNC Lineberger’s Ronny Bell, PhD, MS , associate director of cancer care access and excellence, on fostering diversity and becoming agents of change.
Weissman said the day had special meaning for him. “Just watching the students ask questions on the core facility tours and during the oral presentations reminded me of what it’s like be young, inquisitive, and enthusiastic for the future. I also thought the end of the event when the students answered the question ‘What is the one lesson you learned today?’ was amazing. The responses were insightful and emphasized why we held this event.”

The treasury of our Moscow panoramas is gradually increasing.
We have already been shooting aerial panoramas for 6 years. During this period of time we shot many interesting cities of the world: New York, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Sidney, Miami, Las Vegas, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Los Angeles and many others. However, we didn't succeed in shooting Moscow, the city we live in, though we did our best. The case is the flights over Moscow are forbidden except those of Russian Federation Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Response and Russian police. Taking in consideration these administrative restrictions we applied our creativity and resolved this problem by the following:
1) We made a virtual tour over Moscow Encircling Highway : MEH and Interchanges
2) Yauza, Ramenki, Southern Port
3) In May 2010 near the Crocus-City the first in the world 1 gig pixel panorama was shot from the helicopter. It shows the Kremlin, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Novodevichiy Convent, the TV Tower of Ostankino and many other places of interest.
4) This sphere shot from the height of 1000 m which shows most part of Moscow and regions.
5) Last spring we have shot the panorama of Novodevichiy Convent
6) We have done a virtual tour over Moscow State University
7) Earlier this year we have done a fabulous panoramas of Moscow City business center
8) One of Moscow City panoramas has been converted into stereo format
9) We have created a giga pixel panorama of the center of Moscow
Also it is worth to view one of the photos by Sergey Semenov devoted to the rehearsal of the Victory Parade of May 9.
It had success on the exhibition World Seen by the Russians held in Moscow, on Tverskoy Boulevard in May-June 2011.
And now we would like to introduce a virtual tour around Moscow Kremlin.
