River cruise tipping

I was watching a vlog about Viking river cruises and the narrator said that, even though almost everything is included in the price, tipping is not. Which surprised me. He laid out some general daily guidelines and it seems to come to about 20 euros a day.

Does that sound right? If so, doesn't that mean I have to break my own you-don't-need-cash-in-Europe advice and load up on euros? Or do they somehow let you put it on a credit card?

I just wish they would bake the tips into the fare.

In Viking's Q and A section it says gratuities are included but you can include more at your discretion,

Another reason we like TAUCK better than Viking, AMA, Avalon, etc - it is truly ALL INCLUSIVE including excursions, tips, unlimited 24/7 top shelf alcohol.

Yes, you do have to tip on most other river cruise lines (except on Tauck and Uniworld - which are truly all inclusive). We've cruised with Viking, Avalon, AMA and everyone's tip was added to their acct the last night - you had the option to tip more if you wanted - it definitely wasn't included in the initial payment. Viking is NOT an all inclusive tour. Once you go with Tauck or Uniworld, you will never go with anyone else. We've taken 12 River Cruises on many different companies over the past 15 years - we have 3 more booked with Tauck for 2023 and 2024. That said, Viking employees work hard and certainly deserve every tip they get.

If they baked it into the fare, us Americans would tip on top of that anyway. It's baked into us.

We took a Viking cruise. Tipping was pretty close to mandatory. I believe it was $200 which is then split among the service workers. I think, if I am recalling correctly, it was automatically charged to the accounts. There even was a spiel the night before the end of the trip that in effect, we were allowed to tip more for employees that might have been especially helpful. I also recall that passengers were allowed to opt out of the automatic tipping, but it seemed like it just wasn't done.

It did grate on me some. Everything is included, but not really. Other than that, we really did enjoy the cruise and may some day take another.

On our Viking River Cruise, the tip was added to your account and you paid your final bill by credit card. So NO you don't need Euros at the end to pay this. Having said that: You should have some Euros on you from the beginning of your cruise. I am surprised on how many Viking passengers didn't get any Euros beforehand and tried to pay for items while on shore excursions in US dollars. These passengers were upset that European merchants wouldn't accept US dollars!!!!! "Why not?" said one. "They take them on our Caribbean cruise!" It was an good example of being an ugly American.

We did a Viking River Christmas Market cruise in December 2022. You register a credit card when you embark. Near the end of the cruise, a tip is added to your bill. You can view the charge on the television in your stateroom. Ours was $133 per person ($16.67/day USD).

The amount can be adjusted or deleted by speaking with a person at the guest services desk. I have seen people at the desk asking to remove the tip and they did it. I guess there could be a variety of reasons - the person doesn’t tip, they want to tip individuals in person. I don’t know. I understand that tips are included in the fare for travelers booking from the UK and Australia (and maybe others).

We think the amount assessed is fair. In addition, we leave a bit more cash (local currency) in an envelope for our cabin steward(s) and sometimes one or two servers who treated us exceptionally well. We’ve done two Viking river cruises, three ocean, and one expedition. We like Viking and think the service is great. Hope you enjoy your trip!

PS - You might take a few euros to tip the local guides on excursions.

How can it be a tip if it's compulsory or included in the price? Surely that just makes it another charge. Tips are meant to be a recognition of good or exemplary service so paying tips for every staff member, even upfront, is not a tip/gratuity, it's a charge.

Just pay the staff more.

JC, it does seem rather comical. If the tips are more or less baked in, then just include the price in the regular fare. This tipping stuff is getting ridiculous. It's annoying to check on prices but with the add-ons it's a completely different ballgame. Just be up front from the get-go.

derek, man, that's embarrassing.

Just returned from a Viking river cruise in Europe. For those concerned about such things there was an optional tipping charge that you could add to your bill which was explained as covering the entire crew for the week. It was optional - you could elect not to participate and go ala carte if you so chose ... or forego tipping altogether I suppose. There was a "suggested" amount per person offered but you weren't obligated to participate, nor did I perceive any pressure to do so. Given the quality of the service offered aboard we were happy to go with the suggested amount and be done with it, but to each their own I suppose.

I took a Viking Cruise several years ago. They sent a booklet before the trip going over several things. One was tipping. It clearly said the 'expectation' was at the end of the journey the tip should be per day/$X (I don't remember the specific amount, but it was in dollars.) However, at the end of the journey, at our meeting the night before departing to review the departure process, they stated the tip should be 'X' euros. At the time the difference between euros and dollars was quite significant. I believe you were provided an envelope in which to leave your tip at the front desk. I left my tip in $$ equivalent, not euros because that was what I had initially been told. I enjoyed my river cruise and would do it again. However this switch from dollar to euro (to their advantage) was just one reason why I would not take Viking again.

We have taken 2 river and 2 ocean Viking cruises and we are going on our third ocean cruise this July with Viking; the service is wonderful. The tipping is "Suggested" but by no means required. They add the tip to the charges at the end of the cruise on the last day of your account page (can be paid with credit card) but you have the option of changing the amount to more, the same or to delete it completely. It is simply the same as when you go to a restaurant and they have "Suggested" amounts to pay the server added in the gratuities section of 18%, 20%, 25%, etc.

You do what you deem appropriate to the service you received.

We have taken two Viking river cruises. That was enough. Then we took an AMAWaterways river cruise which was so far superior in every category that we won’t ever take another cruise with Viking. They tried to keep us from leaving the ship on our own to walk around the river towns as if we were children. No toiletries were provided so we had to shop on shore without being able to read German, etc.

We took 2 Viking cruises last year and toiletries were in the bathroom and had no issues coming and going off the boat by ourselves. You have the option to pay by credit card ahead of time (I think up to week before the cruise) if you want to pay in $. If you want to pay in Euros then do on the boat. I look to see what the conversion rate is to see what is better. On our second cruise last summer the Euro was so much lower that it was better to pay in Euros on the boat but in the spring the rate was almost equal so we payed in $ ahead of time. We gave more of a tip to those people that really helped us on the boat. I think by having it this way you get options to tip or not to tip , $ versus Euros ect. Versus just having it in the price of the trip. We love Viking.

We had soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion in our bathroom in quite generous sizes. I wished they had a magnifying mirror, but that's just me. Maybe Suki's cruise was during COVID? I had looked into a Viking Cruise during COVID and for certain countries they were not letting people explore on their own given the COVID risk perceived. Also, I know you can not explore Russia independently unless you obtain a visa or some similar type of document.

I should add that I think the tip was $200/couple which is small in comparison to the total cost of the cruise. I do recall we tipped an extraordinary local guide in Strasbourg. I would rather tip the local guides for great service than be essentially mandated to pay a group tip. Viking, just pay the employees a bit more! We would have tipped a few people that were particularly helpful on the ship if we hadn't been a little annoyed with the whole thing and the extended conversation by the cruise director, how we were absolutely allowed to tip certain folks extra with lots of comments in terms of who those folks might be.

“They tried to keep us from leaving the ship on our own to walk around the river towns as if we were children. No toiletries were provided”

Suki, when was your cruise? We’ve never experienced anything like that with Viking. If we don’t have a specific excursion booked, we jump off as soon as the ship docks. You do need to check in and out with your room card but it’s no problem as long as you return by ‘back on board’ time. There’s always a full line of Freyja toiletries which are replenished daily. I’m sorry you had this experience.

I’ve never cruised with AMA. What did you find to be “far superior” to Viking?

I’ve been on 3 Viking trips, two river and one ocean, and have always had toiletries. And the only trip we have been on when we couldn’t just get off the ship on our own was in the fall of 2021 during Covid and it was due to Covid. It was a wonderful ocean trip to Malta/Greece/Croatia. If the country was classified as a category 4 by the state dept., as was Malta and Greece, we could not go off on our own. If it was a category 3, like Croatia, we could and did. I was grateful to Viking for keeping us safe.

"Tip" is a misused word in cruising. Better to think of it as a surcharge. Just how much choice the customer enjoys will vary from line to line. On CroisiEurope, a large French-operated river line, the amount to pay per day was suggested, to be delivered at the end of the trip in an envelope. I suppose the secrecy would allow some choice. My bet is that few customers would give back an empty envelope. With all food and drink being included in the fare, tipping a server at the table or bar was rare. (All passengers except me were European and I've spent enough time travelling to not automatically follow North American ways.)

9 Tips for Getting the Most from a River Cruise with Uniworld

by Gary Bembridge · October 8, 2015

Uniworld River Beatrice in Passau Germany

Uniworld River Beatrice in Passau Germany

Drifting down the rivers of Europe is one of the fast growing travel experiences. Growing numbers of travellers are attracted to this “pack and unpack once with your hotel as transportation” way of seeing and immersing into European culture. Uniworld is one of the leading, and most luxurious, options available. In this article I share my nine tips for anyone considering river cruising and Uniworld.

Tip 1: Make sure river cruising is right for you

River cruising is not for everyone. Although the passenger mix is changing, it best suits people who enjoy going on travels that are tightly organised, where every detail of their trip is planned and arranged.

It is also perfect for people who like to know the exact cost of their vacation, and have it all paid for up front.  Unlike most ocean cruises, they are usually fully inclusive and include food, drink, gratuities and excursions. Wi-Fi is usually included too. There are no-added-cost facilities and activities, like gambling or speciality dining, and so the fare will be the cost of your trip (other than any souvenirs or gifts you buy). They also are likely to include transfers to and from the ship. If you are travelling from the UK and book via Titan Travel, they even provide transport to and from your home to the airport.

River cruising helps people explore Europe without having to deal with language, hotels, finding the right tours, places to eat or navigate commuting by trains or planes between destinations.

The itineraries serve travellers passionate about arts, culture and history and are fairly active and able, as the tours are mostly walks lasting up to two or more hours. Unlike ocean cruising, there is no risk of seasickness as the boats run on gentle rivers and cruising time is much less.

Watch the following videos I made of Uniworld River Beatrice crew talking about the advantages of river cruising, and who it is best suited for.

The Advantages of River Cruising

Who river cruising is suited for

Tip 2: Make sure Uniworld is the right line for you

Uniworld is one of the premium river cruising companies and aim to offer a prestige, personalised and pampering experience to match. They offer what they call a “six-star service” where they try to offer as personal service as is possible. Every ship in the fleet is different inside, with distinctive decor and feels.

They tend to attract couples and solo travellers aged 50 and above who come from English-speaking countries, as everything on the ship is conducted in English.

Watch a video I made interviewing Uniworld crew about their “Six-Star Service”

Tip 3: Make sure you choosing the right cruise

The amount of cruising versus time in towns or docked can vary a greatly between cruises. When looking at the itinerary look carefully at how much the ship cruises during the day and night, and where the overnight stays will be. For example, a Venice and Northern Italy trip may involve most nights in Venice and very limited cruising, while a Danube one will travel longer distance with nights spent in different destinations. Look at where the overnights will be as this may be a chance to go to shows, local theatres or explore the nightlife.

River cruising can be quite hectic and regimented to make the most out of every stop, There will be at least two excursions every day and so spend time looking at the schedule to make sure it meets your activity versus relaxation level need.

Tip 4: Choose the right cabin type

Your budget will influence the grade of cabin you select. All grades are compact on river cruise ships, and bathrooms will likely only have a shower.

If you can afford it, I recommend selecting one that has a Juliet-style balcony on the upper level, as you have floor-to-ceiling windows to appreciate the scenery and open the doors to enjoy the fresh air. The middle-deck cabins have windows and those on the lower deck have smaller windows that are higher up on the wall, and just above water level. These cabins are largely below water level and so there can be some water noise.

If on the upper level, which is where the restaurant and lobby entrances are, I recommend taking one towards the middle to minimise any noise from either.

Take a look at two video tours two Uniworld ships:

Tip 5: Book through an expert cruise agent, especially one focused on river cruising

As these tips have shown there are many factors to consider, so I recommend you get the help of a cruise agent with river expertise to help in finding the right line, itinerary and cabin. They will also be able to get you the best price.

As already mentioned, if travelling from the UK consider Titan , as they have lots of experience of river cruising and Uniworld in particular. They also have the door-to-door service included in their packages.

Tip 6: Understand what is included, especially if comparing with other river cruise lines

Uniworld fares are all-inclusive. Once on the trip you should have no other key expenditure, other than items you buy on shore.  It covers food, drinks, excursions, gratuities, talks and Wi-Fi. There are some premium drinks you can purchase and a small shop.  When comparing their fare to other lines carefully look at what the others offer to ensure you are making a fair fare comparison.

Tip 7: Make sure you pack and bring the right things

Do not bring too much luggage, as there is fairly limited storage. There is also an on-board laundry if you need to wash clothes.

The dress code is casual during the day. Smart shirts and trousers for men and equivalent for women are suitable for most dinners. Guests are encouraged to wear a jacket and similar for the gala dinner. You should bring comfortable walking shoes and layers, including something waterproof, for use on excursions. If you forget anything you are usually in close reach of shops to stock up. There is a small fitness centre and bicycles available and so work out gear is a good idea.

Other key items:

  • Electrical adaptors and chargers. The ships have 4 types of sockets and can cater for both USA and European plugs.
  • As there is no medical centre, bring a simple first aid kit and plenty of medication you need.
  • Earplugs and eyeshades can be helpful.
  • Tablet computer or Kindle. There are films and TV channels shown on the in-room TV.

Tip 8: Get to know the crew and explain likes and preferences

There are only around 150 guests on many ships and so the crew have time to get to know guests, and want to. They try to create a personal service and are able to meet your preferences and needs. They urge you to discuss with them what you like (or do not!) and try and cater for it. As a premium line they expect to offer something above the norm of other lines.

Tip 9: Make the most of your time on board with these other first-hand pieces of advice

  • Attend, or watch the daily briefings on the in-room television. These give history, overview and information on what the ship and excursions will be doing the next day, and give alternatives if any are being offered.
  • Check and use the daily program each evening before bed. It explains the exact plans for the next day with times. It also provides more insights and information about the crew, route and ship. They only do emergency announcements, so you need to make sure you know the timing of activities and meals.
  • Assume you will have decent but not amazing Wi-Fi. It varies based on the itinerary and environment sailing through. It is good enough for checking emails, social media and some browsing but not for Skype or FaceTime.
  • Get the right pillow. There is a wide choice including down feather, fibre comfort, neck support, neck soft and lumbar supporting cushion.
  • Find out where the 24-hour coffee and tea station with cookies are.
  • Dining is open seated and so move about and meet people. There are very limited tables for two.
  • On excursions, read the booklet sent with tickets as it lays them all out in detail. There are some options that you will need to sign up for, so make sure you know what they are and do so before the deadline.  You don’t need to let them know if not going on main ones listed in the program. You will chose which group you join on the quayside when setting off each day. They use a Vox system where you wear and earpiece and the guide has a microphone, make sure you recharge it overnight.
  • Pace yourself as lots going on with little down time!

Final thought

I hope these tips have helped you decide if Uniworld is the right line for you – once you have decided river cruising is for you. If you have any more tips please leave a comment on the post.

Uniworld Suite Travelers - Tipping the Butler?

I have my 3rd Uniworld river cruise coming up in November. I'm booked in a suite this time, which includes a butler. Uniworld is all tips included, but I'm wondering if suite occupants are expected to tip extra to the butler, or are his/her tips included in the higher fare charged for suites?

I have no idea what I'm going to do with the butler. :D

It’s not expected but I know my DH does.

We used our butler for daily laundry and bringing us coffee in the mornings and also for breakfast a couple of times. They also restocked the bar and brought afternoon snacks.

I have never noticed anyone in the British novels and mysteries I read 'tip' their Butler, so if a cruise line says tips are included I accept that. Unless I ask the Butler to do something extraordinary.

Thanks to both of you. I'll play it by ear. I really don't think I'll use his/her services that much, but who knows.

They definitely do not expect it, and seem most eager to do more, but we weren't sure what else to ask them to do. ;) I'm planning to pack less for our December cruise (we'll see how well I do with that!), knowing that I can just have some of the clothing I use for layering during the day laundered whenever needed. They're very attentive; for instance, once they saw that I was eating gluten free options in the dining room they were careful to bring us an assortment of snacks in the afternoon that had clearly marked GF options for me.

That's nice to know, Bub. I'm traveling by myself, so I'm not sure how much I'll use things such as the in-suite breakfast. I enjoy the social aspects of cruising, so sitting in my cabin eating appetizers and sipping wine isn't that appealing.

I agree with bubblz. Tips are not expected, but DH usually has given a small tip (he can't help himself!) LOL We had an en suite dinner one evening when we were exhausted from a long day of touring, which the butler served in courses. Also, we have had butlers switch complementary bottles of champagne for a bottle of Bailey's, which we enjoy more. And the unlimited laundry is great.

Bon voyage!

I'll keep that in mind about the in-suite dinner after a long day of touring. I know that feeling of just wanting to curl up in my bathrobe and slippers and have someone bring something to me to eat.

The Best Uniworld River Cruises: Your Ultimate Travel Guide!

Posted on Last updated: February 9, 2024

Embarking on a journey with Uniworld River Cruises is more than just a vacation—it’s an entrée into a world of unparalleled luxury and timeless elegance.

As river cruises gain popularity, discerning travelers seek experiences that go beyond the ordinary, and Uniworld stands out, offering a kaleidoscope of cultures, histories, and landscapes.

Dive into this comprehensive guide, and let’s set sail into the mesmerizing realm of Uniworld River Cruises.

Uniworld River Cruises

The In-Depth History of Uniworld River Cruises

Uniworld River Cruises is more than just a river cruise line; it’s a testament to visionary entrepreneurship, adaptability, and a passion for unparalleled luxury.

The brand’s journey from its inception to its current status as a leader in boutique river cruising is both inspiring and intriguing.

The Genesis: Serba Illich’s Vision

The seeds of Uniworld River Cruises were sown in 1976 by Yugoslavian entrepreneur Serba Illich. Originating as a tour operator company based in California, Uniworld initially provided guided tours primarily in Europe.

Transition to River Cruising

As the travel industry evolved, Illich recognized the untapped potential of river cruising. In the 1990s, Uniworld transitioned from land tours to focus on river cruises, a move that was both timely and strategic.

This was during a period when river cruising was beginning to gain traction as an intimate, immersive way to explore destinations.

Uniworld River Cruise

Partnership with The Travel Corporation

The early 2000s marked a pivotal moment in Uniworld’s history. The company formed a partnership with The Travel Corporation (TTC), a global conglomerate with various travel brands under its umbrella.

This alliance provided Uniworld with the resources and support to expand and refine its river cruise offerings.

The Birth of Boutique River Cruising

Under the stewardship of the TTC and with the visionary leadership of Beatrice Tollman, President and Founder of the boutique Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Uniworld underwent a transformative phase.

Drawing inspiration from the boutique hotel concept, the brand redefined luxury river cruising. Each ship was uniquely designed, resembling a floating boutique hotel, replete with exquisite antiques, original artworks, and bespoke furnishings.

Uniworld River Cruise

Expanding Horizons

With its revamped image and emphasis on luxury, Uniworld began to expand its horizons. Beyond the popular European rivers like the Danube, Rhine, and Seine, Uniworld ventured into less-traveled waters.

By the 2010s, they were offering cruises in Asia, Egypt, and even Russia, providing travelers with a broad palette of cultural and scenic experiences.

Sustainability and Community Engagement

Recognizing the significance of sustainable travel, Uniworld has, over the years, integrated eco-friendly practices and community engagement into its operations.

From green ship designs to partnerships with local artisans and support for community projects, the brand’s commitment to responsible tourism has become a core aspect of its identity.

Today: A Symbol of Luxury and Authenticity

Today, Uniworld River Cruises is celebrated for its unparalleled luxury, attention to detail, and authentic experiences.

While its fleet has grown and its destinations have expanded, the brand remains true to its ethos of offering boutique, personalized voyages that resonate with travelers seeking both luxury and substance.

Planning Your Cruise with Uniworld River Cruises

Embarking on a river cruise with Uniworld River Cruises is undoubtedly a voyage of luxury and enrichment.

Yet, like all great journeys, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience requires a bit of planning. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your Uniworld cruise is everything you’ve dreamed of and more.

Best Times to Cruise

Understanding when to sail can greatly enhance your experience. While Uniworld operates throughout the year, each destination has its peak cruise season .

Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to October) are ideal. The weather is pleasant, and the crowds are relatively smaller.

For the Mekong, November to March offers cooler temperatures. On the Ganges, October to March is preferable to avoid the intense summer heat.

May to September is best, with warmer temperatures and extended daylight hours.

October to April provides milder temperatures suitable for exploring.

Tips for First-Timers

If this is your inaugural river cruise, a few pointers can ensure you’re well-prepared:

Pack Smart:

River cruises are more relaxed than ocean cruises. While there are formal nights, ‘smart casual’ is the general dress code.

Understand Inclusions:

Uniworld offers a range of inclusions, from excursions to onboard amenities. Familiarize yourself with what’s offered to make the most of your experience.

Engage with the Crew:

The staff onboard are a wealth of knowledge, not just about the ship but also the destinations. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek recommendations.

Packing Recommendations

Packing right can greatly enhance your comfort during the cruise.

Essentials:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for excursions
  • Layered clothing to adapt to varying temperatures
  • A light rain jacket or umbrella
  • Universal adapters for onboard charging
  • Binoculars for scenic views
  • A day pack for off-ship adventures
  • A formal outfit for special evenings
  • Swimwear, if your ship has a pool or you plan on using spa facilities
  • Journal or diary to document your journey

Booking and Reservation Tips

Securing your dream cruise involves more than just selecting dates and destinations. Here are some tips to optimize your reservation:

Plan Ahead:

Popular itineraries can get booked up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Booking well in advance ensures you get your desired dates and cabin choices.

Use a Travel Advisor:

Experienced travel advisors can provide insights into the best cabins, potential deals, and even offer insights into the destinations.

Consider Special Deals:

Uniworld occasionally offers promotions like early booking discounts, last-minute deals, or themed cruises. Keep an eye out for these to get added value.

Check Visa Requirements:

Certain itineraries, especially in Asia and Russia, might require visas. Ensure you’re aware of and can fulfill the visa requirements of all countries you’ll be visiting.

Planning your cruise with Uniworld River Cruises is the first step in a journey of luxury, discovery, and personal enrichment. With each decision made in the planning phase, you craft an experience tailored to your desires.

I Experienced A Floating Boutique Hotel For The First Time — Here’s What It Was Like Sailing Uniworld River Cruises

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good hotel experience. But a great hotel experience? Even better.

So when I got the opportunity to take it up a notch, and experience a floating boutique hotel — better known as Uniworld Boutique River Cruises — it was an immediate yes.

Now you’re probably wondering, what the heck is a river cruise? Well, I’m glad you asked.

A river cruise is a unique travel experience that offers passengers the opportunity to explore various destinations along rivers, all from the comfort of a luxurious ship. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises navigate inland waterways, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in scenic landscapes and cultural highlights. With smaller ships and intimate settings, river cruises provide a more personalized and immersive journey for passengers.

Now there are river cruises, and then there’s Uniworld. A lesser-known gem in the realm of cruises, this cruising company offers unparalleled luxury experiences on the water, standing out from the crowd of major industry players.

I Experienced A Floating Boutique Hotel For The First Time — Here’s What It Was Like Sailing Uniworld River Cruises

Each Uniworld ship is meticulously designed to resemble a floating boutique hotel, offering travelers a luxurious retreat on the water. From lavishly appointed cabins to exquisite dining venues and stylish lounges, every aspect of the Uniworld experience exudes sophistication and refinement. Seriously, my room was almost bigger than my last New York City apartment, and let’s not even talk about the bathroom.

When we set sail from Brussels (with Amsterdam as our final destination) on the brand-new ship, the S.S. Victoria , I was truly blown away by every attention to detail. Firstly, Uniworld guests are treated to personalized service from their dedicated staff, ensuring that every need is met with care and attention to detail, and I was no different. Take for example: I had a private butler(s), who not only attended to my every need, but they even knew my name and face as soon as I stepped on the ship. Because of a river cruise’s intimacy (less than 150 guests), I got a personalized greeting from every staff member I encountered.

Did I mention they also left fresh baked cookies in my room every day (which, by day 3, I had to ask them not to because… summer is coming)?

What sets Uniworld apart from other river cruises is its commitment to delivering authentic and enriching travel experiences, because all of the tours each day are included in your cruising price. In Brussels, I was able to get some shopping in (thanks to Europe being tax free), eat my heart’s content of Belgian waffles and beer, while Antwerp allowed me to discover the magic of chocolate on a walking discovery tour of the diamond capital of the world. We followed in Van Gogh’s footsteps on a rainy (or better yet, pouring) day Nuenen, seeing all the sites that inspired much of his art. Kinderdijk was all about its 19 well-preserved windmills that have stood the test of time.

While Europe is just one of the destinations you can explore, you may also want to plan an exotic escape to Asia or Egypt, where Uniworld cruises take travelers on a journey through time and culture. They offer expertly curated shore excursions perfect for girlfriends, couples or solo travelers who love immersive exploration, whether it’s a guided tour of a UNESCO World Heritage site, a culinary adventure through local markets, or a private concert in a historic castle.

In addition to its unparalleled luxury and immersive itineraries, I was also able to learn about Uniworld’s sustainability and responsible travel practices. The company is committed to minimizing its environmental impact and supporting the communities it visits. From implementing eco-friendly technologies onboard its ships to partnering with local artisans and suppliers, Uniworld strives to ensure that every cruise leaves a positive legacy.

Now, the biggest question you’re probably wondering — would I do it again? Absolutely. With Uniworld, I embarked on a journey of discovery, indulgence, and ultimately, what is the pinnacle of luxury in the cruise industry. If that’s not meant for a part two, I don’t know what is!

Uniworld Reviews: What To Expect During Your River Cruising

By: Author Dan Bagby

Posted on Published: September 11, 2023

If you’ve ever taken an interest in going on a river cruise, one of the standout providers may have been Uniworld. Offering boutique river cruises across a huge range of destinations, Uniworld boasts outstanding service and a luxury experience for all its guests.

uniworld river cruise tipping

With 18 gorgeous river cruise ships, each built to blend seamlessly with the region they travel to, and a selection of great itineraries across a range of amazing destinations worldwide, Uniworld River Cruises is a major operator within the river cruising industry. Founded in 1976, this California-based cruise company has a strong presence not only in North America but for those who enjoy cruising all around the globe. They have a strong customer base and strive to provide new and exciting cruises to their long-time customers.

Whether you’re new to river cruising, or just checking out Uniworld as an option for a future river cruise, you may be wondering what to expect when traveling with them. To help you out, we’ve done the legwork for you, researching forums, review boards, and various cruise websites to bring you everything people love (and some of the things they don’t) about traveling with Uniworld, so you can get all the information you need before you book that dream getaway.

Uniworld River Cruises Cost

Whilst at first blush, Uniworld cruises seem to be quite pricey, they’re actually very good value.

Uniworld cruises are all-inclusive and cost, on average, somewhere between $2000 and $4000 per person, depending on the length of the cruise, the itinerary, and the time of year you plan on traveling. Having everything included for this price actually makes them excellent value as a provider of boutique luxury cruises, as can they include everything from flights to overseas transfers to personal butler service, alongside unlimited premium beverages and inclusion of all gratuities, three splendid meals a day and even Uniworld exclusive personalized excursions.

uniworld river cruise tipping

If you’re looking to keep costs low, however, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. Holiday and themed cruises, for example, tend to be a bit pricier than a standard river cruise. So if you’re not set on going on a themed river cruise, it’s much better to keep costs low by going on a standard Uniworld River Cruise.

Uniworld Cruise Experience

Uniworld ships and itineraries are designed to truly blend in with the rivers they are designed for. From stunning French interiors aboard the S.S. Joie de Vivre which cruises the stunning rivers of France, to the iconic hand-painted murals aboard the Ganges Voyager II which cruises through India.

There’s a great range of activities and entertainment options available onboard, as well as a great range of dining options to enjoy.

Uniworld is a great option if you’re planning on staying a little longer in a certain city either before your cruise commences, or at the end of your trip. This is because the company allows you to truly make the most of your getaway by offering guests the option to extend their getaway by adding accommodation for a few extra days in a variety of amazing historic cities all across the world.

Be sure to adhere to the onboard dress code in all areas of the ship.

Uniworld Cruise Food & Drink Review

As Uniworld fares are all-inclusive, guests can enjoy a great range of food and drink options aboard their ship at no extra cost! Uniworld offers unlimited drinks including fine regional beers and wines, as well as handcrafted cocktails made with premium spirits.

Another great feature aboard Uniworld is that menus are inspired by the region you’re visiting and prepared with local ingredients. Although menus are pre-planned to match up with the destinations, they can still be adapted to suit dietary requirements or preferences, so long as you provide enough notice before sailing.

Uniworld Cruise Entertainment & Onboard Activities

Since river cruises only travel short distances between destinations, guests typically spend most of their time on land exploring, eating on board, or sleeping, so there isn’t much need for onboard activities. That said, there’s a great selection of onboard libraries and lounges across the fleet, where guests can relax with a good book or chat with fellow guests on the journeys between destinations.

After arriving at a new destination, guess can enjoy guided walking tours, try some local cuisine, or visit local landmarks.

If you’re planning on traveling with Uniworld, you may be pleased to know that you’ll get the opportunity to enjoy exclusive access to a range of museums and popular landmarks without the regular tourist crowds, thanks to their after-hours tours. There’s also a great variety of fun nights out to be had in the cities boasting great nightlife scenes, such as Prague and Amsterdam, which are pre-planned by the company to ensure everyone has a great time whilst staying safe.

Whilst Uniworld only offers river cruises, most of which are more tailored towards the enjoyment of adults, both young and old , Uniworld also offers a variety of family cruises, which place emphasis on catering to a great getaway filled with family fun. With the family-friendly cruises, you can enjoy movie nights, game rooms, complimentary bike hire for use on land, and even kids menus at the dinner tables.

Family cruises also offer onboard cultural activities aimed at young cruisers and teenagers, such as classes where they can learn to cook dishes or learn the language of the local region they are traveling in.

What Guests Liked Most About Cruising With Uniworld

Reviews for Uniworld are generally very good, with an overall rating of 4.3 / 5 on CruiseCritic.

Guests generally enjoyed experiencing regions fully and surrounding themselves with like-minded people on their vacation. Many reviewers stated that their experience traveling with Uniworld was fabulous and amazing and that the guided tours taken with Uniworld whilst on-shore were fun, relaxed, and informative.

Guests commented on how attentive the staff were, with fast, friendly, and professional service from both the wait staff and the bar staff.

What Guests Didn’t Like About Cruising With Uniworld

As most of the reviews for Uniworld are very good, there are only a few issues that seem to be a common theme with guests.

A lot of guests were unhappy with how much travel time was done onboard a bus, be this to and from activities and excursions, or even to meet the boat at a port if the ship was delayed.

Some guests also complained of large groups onboard dominating the limited spaces on the excursions, however, this is not a common issue.

Amazon River Landscape, Peru

The Amazon Rainforest is a lush jungle environment that spans nine countries, but the most beautiful stretch of all is in Peru. This is thanks to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, a protected zone that has kept development and deforestation out of the Peruvian Amazon, leaving flourishing flora and fauna, as well as several Amazonian communities, intact. This area is also known as the “forest of mirrors” for the crystal-clear reflections of the trees and sky cast by its waters.

Black Spider Monkey, Peru

The Amazon is home to over 30% of all the known animal species in the world. With the floor-to-floor, wall-to-wall ceilings featured in every suite aboard the Aria Amazon, you’ll be able to spot rare Amazonian species right outside your window. Keep your eyes out for Amazonian manatees, three-toed sloths, capybara, pink river dolphins, scarlet macaw, and spider monkeys.

Poached Catfish (Sudado de Doncella)

Peruvian gastronomy is respected across the world, with delicious dishes at both the authentic local level and in the world of fine dining. Fish, meats, legumes, corn, quinoa, and rice feature heavily in richly flavorful dishes, along with numerous exotic fruits that are difficult to find outside of the country. Our menus, crafted by Peru’s own celebrity chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, blend various regional cuisines, highlighting popular Peruvian dishes and drawing on ingredients and techniques from the Amazon.

Machu Picchu

Bucket-list sites are everywhere you look in Peru. Besides the Amazon Rainforest, the “lost city” of Machu Picchu is the biggest must-see destination, as well as the Sacred Valley of the Inkas. Our tours in Peru also pepper in some unique landmarks, ones that many tourists don’t think to visit, while those who do leave fond memories. In Lima, visit Casa Aliaga, one of the city’s oldest buildings and a home that has been passed down through 17 generations of the same family, for lunch with a member of the Aliaga family.

TRAVEL TIPS

When to go: Weather in the Peruvian Amazon can be divided into two main seasons. Visit in the High Water season (December through May) to find yourself closer to the treetops, where you can spot the many species that make their homes there. Alternatively, the Low Water season (June through November) gives access to jungle paths that are inaccessible at other times of the year.

How to pack: Whether you’re visiting during high or low water season, expect warm and balmy weather. We suggest that you bring comfortable walking shoes, quick-drying and lightweight clothing, lightweight long pants and rain gear, long-sleeved tops for jungle excursions, a wide-brimmed hat, extra socks, and a bathing suit.

    820. October 23, 2011. California. #6. Posted May 13, 2022. If I remember correctly, on non-European cruises with Uniworld (Russia and Egypt in our case), tipping was not included and Uniworld provided info. on suggested amounts. I really like not having to have local money ready to tip local guides and bus drivers on excursions.
