The Best Time to Visit South America: By Month and Season

By Author Graham Minser

Posted on Last updated: 19th December 2023

South America has always carried an air of adventure. Ancient civilizations, towering mountain ranges, endless rainforests, and exotic cuisines: all are the makings of an unforgettable trip. Many dream of a journey to the rugged continent, but it’s easy to get stuck on where to go and what time of year.

To better understand which countries and destinations are best visited at which times of the year, I’ve compiled this guide to the best time to visit South America. I spent over a year living in and traveling across South America, while Worldly Adventurer founder Steph has spent since 2014 living in or returning to travel through the region. It’s fair to say we’ve experienced the continent in a range of different seasons.

Spanning everything from the tropical Caribbean coast of Colombia down to the frigid, weather-battered shores of Cape Horn, South America is a big place, and therefore it’s completely impossible to generalize about when to visit.

For this reason, I’ve highlighted key destinations across South America and when they’re at their best to help you decide.

What to expect during each month in South America

  • January: Journey off the beaten path to the Chiloé archipelago for whale and penguin watching, discovering its brightly-painted wooden churches, and dining on decadent seafood feasts.
  • February: Living up to the hype, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro remains the world’s most exuberant party. Don bright colors, sip your caipirinha, and go with the flow.
  • March: Gawk at the sheer scale and spectacle of Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia. By March, many of the tourist hordes have departed as this is the tail end of the high season.
  • April: From the beautiful and isolated town of Tupiza , take a scenic bus ride to the otherworldly salt flats at the Salar de Uyuni to marvel at the world’s largest mirror.
  • May: Few cities match the character and elegantly fading grandeur of Buenos Aires , the city of tango, asado, and football.
  • June: Bring (or earn) your PADI certification as you dive into the crystalline waters of the Galápagos . Nature’s own evolutionary laboratory, the flora, and fauna are like nothing you’ve ever seen.
  • July: Peak swells draw in the surf crowd up and down the coast in Brazil. Join the locals at Praia Mole near Florianópolis for waist-high barrels off a perfect stretch of golden sand.
  • August: Powderhounds will revel in the endless runs at Portillo , Chile’s skiing and snowboarding mecca.
  • September: The high desert of Southern Peru beguiles visitors with the delightfully atmospheric city of Arequipa, towering volcano Misti , and awe-inspiring Colca Canyon .
  • October: An ideal time to visit Machu Picchu , the intact Incan city that never fails to amaze its visitors.
  • November: Avoid peak season crowds to sunbathe by day and stargaze by night in the dramatic landscape of Chile’s Atacama Desert .
  • December: Trek through dense jungle to La Ciudad Perdida , the lost city of the advanced pre-conquest Tayrona people in Colombia.

FAQs about the best time to visit South America

The best time of the year to see South America really depends on where you plan on going. Typically, the very south of the continent – the countries of Chile and Argentina – experience four distinct seasons, with Patagonia in the very south of both best visited between December and February for the best weather.

The rest of South America typically experiences humid and hot weather conditions year-round, with countries close to the Equator and the tropics, such as Ecuador, Colombia, northern Brazil, Venezuela, and the Guianas maintaining consistently hot temperatures.

However, these countries have two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season, with the latter far better for hiking in places like Huaraz,  Machu Picchu , and  national parks in Colombia  and Ecuador. In most of South America, altitude also has a huge influence on temperatures, and you can expect a real drop in temperature when moving from lowland areas, such as Lima or  Cartagena , up to areas with higher elevation, such as  Cusco  or  Bogotá .

The rainy season in South America is when tropical parts of the continent experience rainfall. This is the case in countries within the Amazon Basin, including Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, the Guianas, and Venezuela, which experience extended periods of rainfall at different times of the year.

Rain season really depends on the country, with this period falling between April and May and October to November in Colombia, while in Peru, rainy season is experienced between December and March. As a result, it’s best to consult our  best time to visit guides  for individual countries and destinations before choosing when to travel to South America.

The best country to visit in South America depends on the type of travel you love! If you’re a keen hiker, nothing beats  Patagonia , the southernmost region of  Chile  and  Argentina . If you want to see world-famous archaeological sites, you’ll want to head to Peru.

For incredible wildlife opportunities, Ecuador and  Guyana  are your best bets, while Brazil is the perfect spot for Carnaval and beaches. If you’re seeking beyond-the-beaten-path destinations,  Colombia ,  Bolivia , Uruguay, and Paraguay are great places to visit in South America.

Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail

A trip to South America would be incomplete without visiting the fabled Incan city in the Andes Mountains. This area of Peru has two distinct seasons, the dry season and the wet season.

Views across Machu Picchu in Peru as seen from the Sun Gate

Peak Season

High season is from May through October. Visitors are guaranteed plenty of sunny days and stunning panoramic views. Nights on the Inca Trail can be brisk during the dry season, so bringing warm clothing and a well-insulated sleeping bag for the cooler temperatures is advised. Read up on detailed preparation for hiking the Inca Trail to prepare for this unforgettable South America trip.

Travelers often avoid the wet season (November through April), as trails can be washed out when heavy rainfall occurs. However, if minimal crowds are your aim and you don’t mind some rain, it can be a great time to visit. Bear in mind that Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail close for maintenance during the month of February.

Shoulder Season

The optimal time for visiting, the shoulder season (May-June and September-October) offers smaller crowds, plenty of blue skies, and dry weather.

Founder Steph visited in June (she trekked the Salkantay trail , a lesser-known route than the Inca) and was impressed by how few other hikers she saw on the trail. This was before visitors had started returning in great numbers to Peru, however, so you might find a few more when you visit – but this is still typically the period when you can expect to encounter the fewest other visitors heading to Machu Picchu!

Buenos Aires

The dynamic capital of Argentina boasts a plethora of activities and attractions, offering visitors a memorable South America trip with its temperate climate and distinct seasons.

Tango in San Telmo, Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires can get steamy in the summer months, which is also the wet season. It’s the right time to enjoy the urban beaches on Rio de la Plata and dance all night in a tango bar. The high season runs from December through February.

Although most tourists arrive for peak season, low season is actually the best time to visit. Featuring a temperate climate, Buenos Aires is most comfortable during the spring and autumn, when you can be assured of enjoying warm temperatures and blue skies, without the sticky humidity of the summer.

The best months to visit are March to May and August to November. Dancers and spectators alike flock to the city in August for the World Tango Festival and World Cup .

The Galápagos Islands

Sitting just off the equator, the Galápagos’ tropical climate makes it an ideal year-round destination. The best time to visit largely depends on what you plan on doing once you arrive.

Landscape of Bartolomé Island in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador.

December through May is the rainy season, which offers the best water visibility for snorkeling or diving. Typically, the afternoon brings heavy rainfall, clearing up by the evening. On land, photographers will relish the blooming desert landscape and resultant animal feeding activity. Crowds and prices are at their highest during the holidays in late December.

Beginning in June and running through November, the driest months are a great time to spot marine life, such as dolphins and whales. The Humboldt Current flows north from Chile and Peru, bringing cooler temperatures both in the water and on land.

The months of November and May are an ideal time without the holidaying crowds in July and December, with the best of both wet and dry seasons. The Galápagos Conservancy has a wealth of knowledge regarding the flora, fauna, and ecosystems you will encounter.

Steph did a great job! I have never used such a service before and I wish there were more of them!Getting off the beaten track was important to us and with Steph’s knowledge we were away from the crowds. The information is very detailed and she knows some great places to stay! Thank you Steph!

The Amazon Rainforest

Spanning several countries and half a billion hectares, the Amazon rainforest is the largest and most biodiverse of its kind. Planning a trip can be a daunting task if you’re trying to avoid the heavy rainfall of the wettest months in this tropical climate.

Sunrise over a river in the Amazon rainforest in Peru

The best time to visit this vast destination is in the dry season, which runs from July through November. River levels are low, hiking trails are accessible, and these dry months offer the best opportunity for land-based exploration.

Because water lowers are levels, it can be easier to spot wildlife, because animals congregate around the edges of the rivers. That said, when you’re heading out by boat, the top of the jungle canopy can be very far away (in wet season, you can be a few meters higher because of the increased water levels), so it can actually be harder to spot wildlife with the naked eye.

While the heavy rainfall from December through June presents a major challenge, it offers a very unique experience. The wettest months bring cooler temperatures and a welcome respite from the jungle heat, but also mosquitoes and the possibility of extensive rain – which can be uncomfortable if you’re traveling back to the lodge in an open canoe!

In addition, high water levels make rivers easily navigable for expedition cruises, from Iquitos in Peru all the way to the delta at Macapá in Brazil.

Founder Steph visited the Colombian Amazon in June and stayed at lodges where the water from the swollen rivers reached up to almost the top steps of the lodge’s stairs! This is pretty typical at this time of the year and means you can travel deeper into the jungle by boat than you would otherwise.

However, it can be harder to spot wildlife because of the availability of water, although birds are easier to see during this period.

El Salar de Uyuni

Visiting the stark setting of the world’s largest salt flat is a South America trip that captivates even the most jaded globetrotter. With two distinct seasons, each with its respective allure, El Salar de Uyuni has established itself firmly on South America’s travel A-list.

El Salar de Uyuni: the world's largest salt flat.

The most popular time to visit is in the summer months, from November through March, when the wet season’s precipitation transforms the barren landscape into an immense mirror.

While heavy rainfall can turn the dirt roads surrounding the salt flats into a muddy bog in places, setting out with the right tour group makes this a perfect time to go.

Worldly Adventurer founder Steph explored the region in March and had the incredible experience of seeing the salt flats completely underwater – an experience she certainly won’t ever forget.

For those seeking drier conditions (and less mud), April and October afford an outstanding time to see the salt flat at its saltiest. Temperatures drop well below freezing at night, on the high plateau just beneath the towering Andes Mountains. This is also an ideal time for stargazing since these are the driest months and the lack of light pollution ensures clear and dazzling skies.

Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

The neighboring megalopolises of Southern Brazil offer a vibrant, nonstop energy few places on Earth can match. These are a year-round destination, with its sunny tropical climate. Come for Carnaval in Rio, come for world-class surfing and samba, or come just to take in the spectacle.

Aerial photo of Octávio Frias de Oliveira Bridge in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

All of Brazil, and especially Rio de Janeiro, gear up for Carnival in February. Before you plan, check out which parades are more your style and dress comfortably. The warm temperatures make it the right time to hit the beach with a cold beverage in hand. Dress for the heat and bring sun cream. The summer months get steamy.

For those seeking a somewhat less chaotic adventure, the winter months bring cooler temperatures and sunny days. With fewer crowds, it’s a great time to enjoy a quieter beach day at Praia Vermelha under the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio, or the equally stunning Praia do Tombo just south of São Paulo.

The Atacama Desert

More Martian than earthly in appearance, the high-altitude Atacama Desert is the driest desert on the planet. Packing in active volcanoes and geysers, flamingos and vicuñas, and incredible stargazing, Chile’s Atacama is a must for lovers of adventure and extreme nature all year round.

What little rain there is generally falls in January. These occasional downpours can make some areas and roads inaccessible. Nevertheless, the summer months (from November through March) are the best for observing the night sky, although with the majority of days in the Atacama Desert rain-free, this is rarely a consideration.

That said, if you’re coming for the stars, take into account the lunar cycle as a full moon will make it practically impossible to see the constellations.

places to visit in Chile

If traveling independently, make sure to hire a 4×4 to avoid the inconvenience (and indignity) of getting stuck in the mud or even in the dusty sand that lines the road. For more recommendations, read our guide to San Pedro de Atacama .

The winter months – July in particular – offer a rare opportunity to enjoy snow in the high desert. This can make some locations inaccessible, but you will likely have most attractions to yourself.

Torres del Paine National Park, Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia

Southern Chile is a land of extremes. Despite the seasonally inhospitable climate, the South American tip is a year-round destination with adventure for even the most seasoned adventurers.

adventure travel in Patagonia

The high season in Southern Chile covers the summer months, from December through February. During this time, trekking in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego , and ascending the mountains of Torres del Paine National Park , is most easily done.

This is, however, when droves of tourists from around the world descend on the region, so avoid these months if solitary hiking is more your style.

The best time to visit the southern end of the continent is during the shoulder months of November, March, and April. You’ll have plenty of sunny days, and the national parks see far fewer tourists.

This is an ideal time for Torres del Paine; Worldly Adventurer founder Steph has explored the park on multiple occasions in March, and found the weather to be still warm and less windy than the summer months (when speeds can reach up to 160 kilometers per hour (100 mph).

March or April are also the perfect months for photography, as the trees begin their shift from green to blazing orange. You’ll find the world’s most famous photographers descending in their droves onto the park during mid-April.

Although the winter months of May through September are cold with shorter days, this is the high season for ski resorts in Patagonia.

An added advantage for winter trekking is that you will often have large tracts of land all to yourself, although for places such as Torres del Paine National Park , you will need to hire a guide.

Worldly Adventurer founder Steph visited the park in September and found it an incredible experience. Not only were there only a handful of other hikers in the national park, the weather was sunny and settled – if quite cold during the day and far below freezing at night – and offered the perfect conditions for hiking.

While the W and O are closed to independent hikers during winter, taking a tour (such as this one with Chile Nativo) still allows you to trek the park’s most famous trails. This winter multisport tour (which Steph did) also gives you the chance to see the park beyond the multi-day trails.

Lake Titicaca

Straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest large lake, sitting at a dizzying 3,812 meters above sea level. Because of its altitude, it’s home to some of the coolest temperatures in the region, regularly dropping below freezing at night.

Lake Titicaca: the highest navigable body of water in the world and one of the unmissable Bolivia tourist attractions.

The best time to visit Lake Titicaca is during the winter and spring, which are characterized by their dry weather. The driest months are from May through November. This is a great time to take a boat tour and visit the spectacular Islas Flotantes de los Uros (Peru) and Isla del Sol (Bolivis).

The summer months of December through March routinely bring heavy rainfall. Because of the high altitude and cooler temperatures, most travelers tend to avoid the wettest months.

However, this is the best time of year to see unique local wildlife. In addition, February has the liveliest and most colorful festival of the year, the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaría .

Northern Brazil

A world away from Rio and São Paulo, Northern Brazil has a culture, cuisine, and climate all its own. With two distinct seasons and countless activities to experience, there’s always something going on.

The front stairs of Teatro Amazonas, Manaus, Brazil.

From June through November, Northern Brazil sees its driest months. This is the time for land-based expeditions into the interior from the city of Manaus (don’t miss its magnificent Amazonas Opera House ), a UNESCO world heritage site. Closer to the coast, every June is Brazil’s second-biggest festival, the Festa Junina , celebrated most exuberantly in the state of Maranhão.

December through May brings rain to the northeastern coast, with brief, heavy rainfall in the afternoons. River water levels are high in the interior, making this the best time for expedition cruises on the Amazon and its tributaries. Salvador, on the southern edge of the region, experiences less rain. Its Carnival in February is the largest in Brazil and sees fewer foreign tourists than the more famous Rio Carnival.

Tayrona National Park

Hugging the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia, Tayrona National Park is a tropical paradise of jungle-clad mountains and hidden beaches.

Whether you’re seeking perfect blue skies at the beach or the untouched wilds of the jungle interior, this part of South America has you covered.

Beautiful Caribbean coastline of Tayrona National Park

From mid-December through April, the region sees dry weather. On the coast, the time is right to set up on the beach and work on a tan. Bear in mind that a number of the park’s beaches are not safe for swimming, so if you want to cool off, you’ll need to find one that is.

Many tourists choose this time to make the jungle trek to the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida), as trails and river crossings are easy to negotiate and mosquito numbers are down.

From May through November, the rainy season sees rainfall in the afternoons, especially as you venture further from the coast. Jungle treks can become a no-go, as trails and rivers might become impassable. Mosquitos lay claim to the rainforest, too, making any sort of hiking quite unpleasant, as founder Steph discovered when she hiked to the Lost City in June.

The best months to get the best of the area, without the crowds, are April and early December. Rain is irregular at this time, and you will be guaranteed an intimate experience trekking to and exploring Ciudad Perdida (get a 5% discount by using the code WORLDLY5) with far fewer mosquitoes!

Colca Canyon and Arequipa

Landscapes don’t get much more dramatic than this. The high desert is home to towering volcanoes and canyons, as well as Peru’s second city. And because of the dry climate, it’s always a great time to visit.

Andean condor soars over cliffs under a blue sky. Best Hikes in South America

The little rain that does fall comes from January to March. These wettest months cause the desert to bloom and make a trip to Colca Canyon an unforgettable experience. Nights are also a bit warmer for those who camp during the trek.

April through December are the driest months when it hardly ever rains. This is a perfect time for stargazing and extended treks along the Colca Canyon. Every May in the tiny hamlet of Chapi is the Virgen de Chapi festival, an important pilgrimage, and local religious procession.

It’s difficult to ignore the imposing Volcán Misti, which towers over Arequipa and the surrounding area. The best time to make the ascent is in the shoulder season, specifically in November or April.

The Atlantic Coast

The waters of the Atlantic are a prime attraction for those planning a South America trip, and for good reason. Nearly the entire length of Brazil is littered with sandy beaches and legendary surf breaks. In contrast, the southern coasts of Patagonia offer cooler temperatures and dramatic landscapes.

A Magellanic penguin looks up at the camera in Punta Tumbo, Argentina.

The South American summer, from December to March, is the right time to explore the Patagonian coast, where you can see migratory whales, dolphins, and penguins at Punta Tombo . This is also high season for the stylish beach towns of Uruguay and Southern Brazil, like Punta del Este and Florianópolis.

As winter sets in further south, the Brazilian coast sees its driest months and cooler temperatures. Peak swells await surfers from June to September, one stunning beach after another.

A testament to Brazil’s diverse ethnic background, locals and tourists alike join in for the world’s second-largest Oktoberfest at Blumenau, just inland from Brazil’s southern coast in Santa Catarina.

With so many epic adventures on this vast continent, you can’t go wrong. Now that you know what time of year suits each destination, your adventure is one step closer to fruition. If one thing is for certain, now is the best time to visit South America!

Best time to visit South America

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit South America depends where you go. It’s an enormous continent, ranging from the world’s driest desert to towering Andean peaks and the lush forests of the Amazon. Because of that, weather variations are often regional, rather than seasonal.

Some places can be visited year-round, such as Brazil, which has temperatures between the mid-20s and mid-30s. Others have defined wet and dry seasons. These are generally not severe enough to deter travel, although the Falkland Islands is best avoided during its winter months between May and August, due to the rain.

Whether you want to track wildlife, see glaciers, visit ancient ruins or party all night long, there will be ideal conditions somewhere on the continent whenever you want to go.

What is the difference between South America and Latin America?

The distinction between South America and Latin America can sometimes lead to confusion because these terms refer to different aspects of the continent, and some countries can fall into both categories.

Latin America encompasses all the countries in the Americas where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken, as these languages have their roots in Latin. This includes a total of 20 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

On the other hand, South America is not categorized by the language spoken but rather by its geographical location within the continent, specifically in the southern region. The boundary between Colombia and Panama is the defining line, resulting in a total of 13 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

This means that a South American country can also be considered a Latin American country if it’s situated in the southern region of the continent and if Spanish, Portuguese, or French is spoken.

Would not agree that all the countries in Latin America are safe to visit. Colombia for example is level 3 reconsider travel – many trouists are being found dead with their bank accounts having been emptied beforehand. Express kidnappings are also becoming more common unfortunately in latin america.

Hi Mike, Yes, the increasing violence in Latin America is devastating. While our trips have gone off without a hitch, I know the situation in several countries has worsened.

When Is The Best Time To Visit South America?

Aerial,Helicopter,Panorama,Of,Botafogo,Bay,With,Christ

So, you want to vacation in South America , and you’ve done the hard bit – deciding which of the countless incredible destinations to explore. But with such a complex array of dry seasons, rainy seasons, altitudes, and tourist peak seasons in South America, where on Earth do you start when it comes to planning the when?!

In this post, you’ll find out the pros and cons of visiting this glorious continent at different times of the year, and you’ll be fully equipped for booking that adventure.

A General Rulebook

If you’ve got this far already, you won’t need reminding that South America is a vast continent, comprising 12 different countries, and spanning nearly 7 million square miles in area. It’s a place of endless discovery, but the swampy mangroves, snow-capped mountains, bone-dry deserts, misty forest valleys, volcanic islands, and dynamic cities of South America all come with their own unique set of weather systems and other travel factors.

The truth is, there is so much variation and range that it’s next to impossible to say what are the ‘best’ months to visit South America – it is a year-round destination and you’re sure to have the time of your life whenever you choose to go. However, there are a few general rules that are useful to bear in mind when planning your trip.

  • The seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • The further south you go, the more clearly the seasons are defined.
  • The closer you are to the equator (for example, Peru and Ecuador), the warmer the climate is consistent. The higher you climb in altitude, the colder it gets.
  • The cheapest times to travel to South America are the shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn. During the western holiday periods of July, August, and December, prices are higher and attractions are busier.
  • The northern parts tend to be more favorable during the winter months when the temperatures are milder and there is less rainfall. The southernmost parts of the continent (such as Patagonia) are best explored during the summer months when they are less icy and inhospitable.

Read on for a breakdown of just what happens, and where, in a South American year.

Spring (September – November)

Widely considered the best time of the year to visit South America due to its balance of comfortable temperatures and dry weather, spring hails the arrival of stunning wildflowers and newborn animals and the departure of the winter tourists.

It’s the dry season for Bolivia’s iconic salt flats (Salar de Uyuni) which means that although you’re unlikely to see the stunning mirror of water that occurs in the wet months, the climate is perfect for exploring.

Likewise, for the Amazon Rainforest, dry season (June to November) means that river levels are low, exposing more hiking trails, and making fishing much more successful – and there are fewer mosquitos about. Being off-peak, the trails and lodges are also less crowded. However, visiting the Amazon in flood season has its own set of benefits – more on this later.

It’s also an ideal time for sightseeing in cities – as a shoulder season, the crowds won’t be overwhelming in urban hubs like Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, and the temperatures will be more manageable.

Although a Galapagos Cruise is a year-round activity, spring is an active time for the islands’ wildlife, rainfall is low, and the skies and seas are calm – ideal sailing conditions.

Unmissable festivities in Ecuador take place on November 2nd – Día de Los Difuntos (Day of the Dead) with feasts, flowers, and fine clothing, and on October 9th, with the city of Guayaquil’s Independence celebrations.

Summer (December – February)

For most of the continent, these months are the hottest of the year and the wettest. December is a high tourist season so prices will be higher, and sites of interest will be more crowded. A weather phenomenon known as El Niño sweeps across South America sporadically, every two to seven years, causing upheaval in many of the normal weather systems at this time of year.

Summer is the time for street parties and beaches – and South America has a lion’s share of festivals and sensational coasts. But be aware – they will be busy! Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro gets crowded during the world-famous Rio Carnival that takes place in February.

The rainy season sets in throughout much of the continent, except Patagonia in the south which, together with its milder temperatures, makes visiting Patagonia an ideal summer destination for wildlife watching and hiking.

Bear in mind that the Inca Trail leading to many ancient Andean citadels is closed for maintenance work during the month of February. The Pantanal and the Amazon also bear the brunt of the soggy weather so explorable areas can be limited in the summer, and Buenos Aires in Argentina can be unbearably hot.

The Ecuadorian coast is at the mercy of the rainy season, but summer rains give way to crystal clear blue skies and high temperatures, which are replaced in the dry season by overcast clouds.

Autumn (March – May)

Another shoulder season, autumn shares many of spring’s benefits and is a great time to travel to South America because of the lower tourist numbers and milder temperatures. The summer rains leave landscapes lush and green, the city temperatures are bearable again, and the prices are much lower.

The Argentinian wine region of Mendoza is busy with winemaking activity – a great time to get involved in a wine tasting tour. The undulating hills are hydrated and the heat is more subdued in these parts.

Despite being at the tail end of the rainy season, autumn is an excellent time for an Amazon River Cruise because of the high river levels opening up creeks and waterways that aren’t accessible at other times of the year. The increased rainfall draws out animals and marks the beginning of their mating season, as well as saturating the colors of the rainforest.

The sea is at its warmest in the autumn months and provides perfect conditions for snorkeling at the coast. It’s a good time to visit the Galapagos Islands , making the most of calmer seas and skies, and a plethora of wildlife to see. The Uyuni salt flats are transformed into a spectacular reflective surface in the autumn making for jaw-dropping photos.

Winter (June – August)

Winter in South America marks the end of the wet season – be ready for clearer skies and cooler temperatures. This is probably the busiest tourist time, but for good reason – the clear conditions are perfect for visiting sites like Machu Picchu and hiking in general (make sure to book Inca Trail tickets six months in advance), and Brazil’s epic wetland the Pantanal brims with wildlife at this time of year. Explore the Atacama Desert in the winter and be rewarded by astonishingly clear starry skies at night.

Patagonia in southern Chile and Argentina is mostly shut down in the winter by harsh ice and snow, but some areas are open for skiing and other snowsports. It’s also worth bearing in mind that during the dry season a dense fog called La Garua descends on Peru’s capital of Lima, whereas nearby Cusco benefits from blue skies and minimal rain.

Buenos Aires hosts the Tango’s International Festival and Dance World Cup in August each year which is worth a trip, while the end of July transforms a small Bolivian town called San Ignacio de Moxos into a wild summer party of costumes and color.

When it comes down to it, much depends on the activities you’re planning and where you’d like to visit. Many places in South America make good all year round destinations, such as the Galapagos Islands which have a constant succession of nesting, breeding, migrating, and hatching seasons, but some places need a bit more careful planning. Some sites can come to life in mystical rainy weather, while others are obscured, and in some parts of the continent such as Torres del Paine in Patagonia, the weather can whistle through several seasons in just one day! It’s always wise to know what’s coming, so do your homework, then get packing!

The best times to visit Latin America

Planning a trip to Latin America but don’t know when to go?

Ted Dziadkiewicz, Managing Director of Contours Travel, is no stranger to the diverse and colourful countries that make up Latin America.

Having travelled there nearly 130 times since Contours Travel was established in 1975, it’s safe to say Ted is an expert when it comes to the region and knows when the best time is to visit Latin America’s iconic destinations.

latin america best time to visit

On a similar latitude to Cairns, Ted recommends visiting Peru and the incredible Incan citadel of Machu Picchu between April and June.

With clear sunny days and crisp cold nights, the four-day hike of the Inca Classic Trail will see less tourists at this time meaning travellers can enjoy the magnificent journey in relative solitude.

Alternatively, Ted says July and August are also good months to make the climb but be aware that there will be a lot more people hiking with you.

For people short on time or stamina, Ted recommends the one-day Inca Express which involves a train ride and a five to seven-hour hike to the Sun Gate via the Winay Wayna ruins.

Keep in mind that there are only 500 permits for the Classic Inca Trail and 200 permits for the Inca Express issued each day so Ted advises travellers to book around six months in advance.

According to Ted, May and June are the best months to visit Brazil to get the full experience that the country has to offer.

During these months, the world’s largest tropical wetland area in the Pantanal region boasts sunny skies and an abundance of rare and exotic wildlife.

It provides a great contrast when combined with a stay in the culture filled streets of Rio De Janeiro.

latin america best time to visit

This is also a great time of the year (May-June) to visit Quito, the capital city of Ecuador.

Sitting at 2850m above sea level, this colonial city is located in a valley surrounded by rolling green hills and snow-capped volcanoes.

Ted also recommends an Amazon cruise or Galapagos cruise during this time of the year saying, “both locations are great family holiday destinations.”

For nature lovers, the wild and beautiful landscapes of Patagonia are best explored in the months of October/November or late February/March according to Ted.

With its towering spires, jagged peaks and winding rivers, the region has become a huge tourist attraction in the warmer months of December and January.

Ted advises to plan your trip before or after these months to take in the barren and beautiful landscapes all to yourself.

Specialising in Latin America only and led by a well-travelled expert in the region and a team with extensive experience, Contours Travel offers tours throughout Latin America with tailored itineraries exploring the best the region has to offer.

Latin america travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What countries are a part of Latin America?

Latin America encompasses Central and South America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and the Caribbean Islands.

Do I need a visa to travel to Latin America?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to Latin America depends on the individual country you're visiting and the nationality of your passport.

Each country in Latin America has its own entry and visa requirements, so it's best to do your own research before you travel.

For example, nationals from the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand don't need to obtain a visa before visiting most South American countries. Still, it's always wise to double-check well before your intended arrival.

What is internet access like in Latin America?

Internet access in Latin America can vary from country to country and between different regions in that country.

Most hotel chains or other accommodation options in major cities will have wi-fi, so connecting to the Internet will be easy.

An international SIM card with a local provider is recommended if you'd rather have no restrictions (and no exorbitant data roaming fees). This still doesn't mean you're guaranteed access to the Internet, though, as the signal is often limited or unreliable in rural areas such as Argentina, Peru and Colombia.

What are the toilets like in Latin America?

The toilet facilities in Latin America differ depending on which country you're in and what region of that country you're in.

Most major cities have westernized toilet facilities in places such as restaurants and hotels, but the further from urban areas you are, the less likely you'll find these types of toilets, so set your expectations accordingly.

One thing to note is that you'll be asked not to flush toilet paper down the toilet. Plumbing systems in most Latin American countries aren't equipped to handle toilet paper. Instead, bathrooms usually have a small sanitation bin beside the toilet to dispose of toilet paper.

Can I drink the water in Latin America?

In most Latin American countries such as Belize, Guatemala, Brazil and Peru, drinking tap water isn't recommended.

This also means you should brush your teeth with bottled or filtered water, be mindful when showering, ask for drinks without ice in them and peel your fruit and vegetables before you eat them.

The two Latin American countries where tap water is generally considered safe to drink are Chile and Colombia; however, you might still get an upset stomach due to the different mineral content.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle that can be filled with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

When is the best time to visit Latin America?

The best time to visit Latin America is between December and April, when days are nice and dry with reasonably warm but comfortable temperatures. However, this time is also peak season, so expect large attractions to be crowded and accommodation prices to be increase.

If you want nice weather without all of the tourists, try traveling during a shoulder season (September - November or (April - May).

Is tipping expected in Latin America?

Tipping is generally expected by tourists in Latin America, with a gratuity of 10% being the average amount. Most restaurants will add a service charge to your bill, but it's also expected that you leave a 10% tip. However, it's more or less voluntary as some countries don't have a strong tipping culture.

What currency will I need on a Latin American tour?

The most used currency in Latin America is the peso, which is used in 7 countries; Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Uruguay.

What currency you'll need depends on where in Latin America you're going.

Some other currencies include the Brazilian Real (BRL), the Peruvian Sol (PEN), the Costa Rican Solon (CRC) and the Honduran Lempira (HNL). Some Latin American countries also accept United States Dollars (USD).

Do I need to bring cash with me on a Latin American tour?

Cash is still widely used in Latin America and in some countries, is the preferred form of payment, so you should definitely have cash on you during your tour.

Your leader can tell you the closest and most reliable ATMs if you didn't change over money at the airport.

Is Latin America safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers visiting Latin America.

Although some countries are more tolerant and accepting than others (Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is considered to be the gay capital of Latin America), public displays of affection between same-sex couples are still heavily frowned upon in some countries and countries such as Bolivia still have homosexuality laws in place.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Galápagos Islands

The Best Time to Visit the Galápagos Islands

The islands are a year-round wonder—you simply can’t go wrong. Wildlife activity is always nonstop, however, the most popular months are typically  December through June .

A destination as diverse as the Galápagos means that every moment of the day—let alone every season of the year—brings a unique wonder. Whether you prefer penguins to land iguanas, or warmer to cooler (but more active) snorkeling waters, there’s a time-of-year for you. WT embarks on adventures year-round and offers multiple epic trips that follow the movement of wildlife.

When it comes to weather, the archipelago’s place on the equator means little variation in temperature, though the year can be divided into the cool and dry season (June to November) and the warm and wet months (December to May). Unlike other destinations that often have high and low visitation seasons, the fact that the islands limit travelers and coordinate arrival and departure times means these ebbs and flows are slight. Depending on the year, cap off your adventure with an extension to Machu Picchu, the highlands of Ecuador, or the Amazon.

Galápagos Islands weather chart.

While this is considered the rainy season, what that means in the Galápagos is long stretches of sunshine marked by intermittent and light showers. Along with higher air temperatures, warmer water makes for perfect snorkeling and sea-kayaking conditions (highlights on all four of our adventures!).

Similar to January, warm days with occasional drizzles continue, as do spectacular wildlife-spotting opportunities: sea turtles nesting, marine iguanas attracting mates by changing color from black to iridescent green and red, and land birds performing theatrical courtship rituals.

As the “rainy season” ends, the islands are awash in color—from both their flora and fauna. This month is also an excellent time to spot baby animals, especially newborn seal pups frolicking about the beaches.

Landscapes blanketed in vibrant flowers, beaches dotted with newborn animals, and warm and humid weather extends into April, along with calmer waters that allow for tranquil days aboard WT’s small luxury yachts and sailing ships (and smoother Zodiac expeditions!). Add on an eight-day extension to Machu Picchu to beat the start of its peak season.

Two tourists watching two boobies.

While ocean temperatures start to drop, clear water conditions make for excellent snorkeling. On land, wildlife continues to be very active, from hatching land iguanas to blue-footed boobies and waved albatrosses performing mating dances.

The Humboldt Current, an ocean drift that arrives from Antarctica, brings cooler temperatures, humpback whales, and an influx of nutrients to the Galápagos. In turn, wildlife—from seabirds to penguins—are more active (this is one of the best times to snorkel and sea kayak); and sunny skies and calm coasts give way to cloudier days and choppier waters. The start of the dry season in the Ecuadorian highlands makes this an ideal time to add on WT’s four-day extension at a beautiful upland hacienda.

Dancing lava lizards, gathering migratory birds, and waters filled with dolphins and whales are just a few of the highlights this month, which is when cooler and drier conditions begin. Take advantage of prime conditions in the Amazon by adding on WT’s four-day extension in a private ecological reserve owned by the native Yasuní people.

There is no shortage of unique bird-watching opportunities this month, including the islands’ famed flamingos in courtship mode. This is also when sea-lion pupping is in full swing. The winds and waves can be quite strong this month, so be prepared for choppier ocean excursions (those who suffer from seasickness should avoid August and September).

A man alongside a sea lion on a shore of a beach in the Galapagos Islands.

This is the quietest time across the islands, due to high winds and rough waters. Travelers who are less affected by these conditions (those who suffer from seasickness should avoid August and September), will be rewarded with the active start of sea lion breeding and penguin mating seasons.

As the winds and waves calm down, various mating (fur sea lions!) and nesting (lava herons) seasons are in full swing.

Similar to October, this shoulder month sees fewer visitors but plenty of incredible wildlife rites of passage.

The end of the year is when the region’s “rainy season” usually kicks off, which features sunny, warmer days punctuated by light, short spells of rain. There’s also plenty to see, from young albatrosses learning to fly to giant tortoise eggs hatching. (Due to the holiday season, our December departures are usually the first to sell out, so book early!)

The Best Places to Visit in Latin America in 2024

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Published on: November 21st, 2023

Last modified: March 28th, 2024

Latin America was the first destination we ever offered at Jacada, and we’re passionate about the extraordinary experiences and exquisite luxury this region has to offer. In 2024 we’re excited about overland adventures across the Bolivian high plains, bespoke behind-the-scenes tours in Colombia , wildlife immersion on the Galápagos Islands and discovering new places to visit in Peru and Panama

We’re especially excited about Guatemala , which is experiencing a rebirth in the post-pandemic travel era. And in the Brazilian Amazon , newfound government support for sustainable tourism initiatives means that it’s easier than ever to make a positive impact through travel.

Our expert travel designers have been busy researching. On trips from Ushuaia to Tikal , and almost everything in between, they’ve been able to hand-pick the best places to visit in Latin America in 2024. Our list includes perennial classics that brim with brand new experiences and opportunities to reach lesser-visited regions, and also features more recent favourites that we predict will be positively shaping luxury travel in 2024 and beyond.

If your interest is piqued, we can help you create a bespoke itinerary to enjoy Latin America in style.

Guatemala ’s tourism sector is growing quickly in the post-pandemic travel era, with airlines adding new routes to the country and millions of visitors expected to arrive this year. Even so, it’s still a relatively underexplored destination – which means you’ll find plenty of authentic experiences, uncrowded archaeological sites and opportunities for customised excursions.

latin america best time to visit

Start in the charming city of Antigua with a bespoke tour of its historical sites, museums, restaurants and small businesses. Guatemala is renowned for its textiles, chocolate and coffee, and you can see first-hand how each of these artisanal products is made. We suggest staying at El Convento , an elegant hotel that reflects the colonial history of Antigua.

latin america best time to visit

To witness a one-of-a-kind cultural event, plan your trip to coincide with All Saints’ Day on 1st November. This is when Guatemala’s Kite Festival takes place, with colourful kites filling the skies to honour deceased loved ones. If you’re more interested in ancient culture, don’t miss the archaeological sites of Iximche and Tikal , where you can even camp out amidst the ruins.

latin america best time to visit

The magnificence of Brazil is no secret, with many travellers flocking to the cosmopolitan hubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo . But while these cities, and the country’s gorgeous beaches, are certainly worth visiting, in 2024 we’ll also be exploring the lesser-known locations scattered throughout this massive country.

latin america best time to visit

Many of our favourite destinations in Brazil strike a balance between protecting the incredible natural environment while also offering amazing experiences. In the country’s interior you’ll find one of the world’s largest wetland areas –  the Pantanal – and the remote refuge of Casa Caiman . From this environmentally conscious hotel, set at the heart of a 53,000-hectare oasis, you can spot jaguars in the wild with the Onçafari conservation project.

latin america best time to visit

Farther north, Cristalino Jungle Lodge is the perfect place to experience the wonders of the Amazon first-hand. It’s located within a huge forest reserve and relies on renewable building materials, natural ventilation systems, permaculture and solar panels to work in harmony with the natural environment.

latin america best time to visit

In recent years, the Casco Viejo (historic centre) of Panama City has been completely revitalised with urban regeneration projects and new hotel openings. In 2024 we suggest checking out the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, a sophisticated hotel set in the building that once housed the iconic Union Club. You can also experience the Panama Canal from a VIP area at the Miraflores Locks, allowing you to skip the crowds and see the canal up close.

latin america best time to visit

Panama has plenty to offer outside of its capital city as well. We love the new Nayara Bocas del Toro, a true tropical paradise featuring private overwater villas in the Caribbean Sea. You can go glamping in the San Blas Islands, meet the Emberá people in the Darién province or spend a week sailing between Panama and Costa Rica on a brand new luxury yacht – including a few nights on your own private island.

latin america best time to visit

In fact, it’ll be easier than ever to combine a trip to Panama with Costa Rica in 2024 – thanks not only to the aforementioned yacht, but also to increasingly frequent flights between these neighbouring countries. Visiting both in the same trip allows you to experience different cultures and explore contrasting landscapes, from lush green jungles to idyllic secluded beaches.

latin america best time to visit

Chile ’s sheer variety of landscapes astound. The desolate Atacama Desert , lush green undulating wine valleys , snow-capped volcanoes of the Lake District and windswept plains of Torres del Paine keep us coming back year after year. In 2024 we want to journey a little further, to places like Chiloé , Aisén or Navarino Island – where the rewards of longer trips mean exploring coastlines, islands, and national parks away from the crowds, and the chance to delve into the Indigenous culture of the Mapuche.

latin america best time to visit

Our travel designer Charles has been on the ground exploring and we’ve been hearing wonderful things about Explora Patagonia National Park , an intimate and peaceful lodge. From here you can navigate some of the worlds most crystalline waters on the Cochrane River, mountain bike across the Patagonian steppe or attempt a high mountain ascent of Tamango or Oportus,.

latin america best time to visit

Galápagos Islands

This is the year to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galápagos Islands . We recommend booking a suite on a luxury vessel like the Endemic or the Elite . Both of these ships have been working hard on minimising their environmental impact by reducing fuel consumption, using biodegradable products and implementing purified water dispensers to reduce single-use plastics.

latin america best time to visit

If you prefer to stay on land, Galápagos Safari Camp and Pikaia Lodge are also terrific options. Galápagos Safari Camp is renowned for its reforestation efforts, while Pikaia Lodge was the first carbon-neutral hotel to open in the Galápagos. Staying on land affords a little more flexibility and a more bespoke approach to your daily activities, which we find works brilliantly for families.

latin america best time to visit

The islands are a year-round destination, so they can easily slot into your 2024 schedule no matter when you’re planning on travelling. That said, our wildlife expert Lily points out that if you want to see certain animals, the best time to visit the Galápagos varies accordingly.

latin america best time to visit

We know Antarctica isn’t technically part of Latin America, but combining it with Chile or Argentina creates an incredible three- or four-week trip. It goes without saying that this is a destination unlike any other. If you want to embark on a truly remote and thrilling adventure, challenging yourself in extreme conditions, we can’t recommend the White Continent enough in 2024.

latin america best time to visit

You can reach Antarctica by sailing the Drake Passage from Ushuaia , or do a fly-in cruise from Chile to save time. When it comes to ships, we recommend Sylvia Earle , which has the world’s lowest-polluting marine engines, or the Magellan Explorer , which re-uses heat from the engine to warm up the ship – among many other environmentally conscious initiatives. Both of these ships are adventure-oriented, with spacious suites, lovely lounge areas and observation decks and state-of-the-art educational facilities.

latin america best time to visit

Our travel designers Jen and Lily have both returned from Antarctica with incredible stories of sleeping out on the ice, kayaking with whales and extremely brave ice swims. Make sure to keep in mind the best times to visit Antarctica , as some months bring harsh and inhospitable conditions.

latin america best time to visit

Over the past few years, Bolivia has been working hard to establish itself as a tourism destination on par with its popular neighbours. In 2024 you can reap the rewards of those efforts by experiencing lesser-known destinations and rugged adventures that highlight not only the country’s natural beauty, but also its distinctive cultural identity.

latin america best time to visit

Bolivia is best known for the spectacular Salar de Uyuni , which can form either end of an adventurous journey between Bolivia and Chile (with stops at luxurious lodges along the way). Visit the salt flats during the rainy season from November to March to see the famous ‘mirror effect’ – and avoid the crowds that descend during the dry season.

latin america best time to visit

Although Uyuni is not to be missed, there’s much more to discover in Bolivia. The lofty city of La Paz is nothing short of magical – but smaller cities like Sucre , Cochabamba and Potosi are also packed with ancient history and cultural landmarks. Then there are the stunning caves and canyons of Torotoro National Park; the mystical Islands of the Moon and Sun in Lake Titicaca ; and the ancient temples and pyramids of sites like Tiwanaku.

latin america best time to visit

Bolivia borders both Peru and Chile, making it easy to combine with these classic destinations. That said, 2024 could be the perfect year to dedicate more time to exploring this country in depth, rather than just hitting the highlights. This will give you plenty of time to get to know Bolivia’s culture – not to mention its cuisine, from hearty soups to salteñas (crispy baked empanadas).

latin america best time to visit

There are so many reasons to go to Colombia , from the lively cities of Bogotá and Medellín to the coastal paradises of Cartagena and Tayrona . In 2024, we’ll be recommending destinations that have seen the most positive change in the past few years, now with some of Latin America’s most exclusive accommodations and enriching experiences for travellers. For instance, the highland town of Barichara (now easily reachable via a new airport), the tropical grasslands of Los Llanos and the seaside village of Bahía Solano.

latin america best time to visit

While Colombia ’s larger cities offer all the usual urban attractions such as world-class restaurants and museums, these places provide the kind of peaceful escape that only small towns can offer. They also have a growing selection of boutique hotels like Casa Barichara , where you’ll feel right at home.

latin america best time to visit

According to our travel designer Jen, Colombia is one of the best places in Latin America for an off-the-beaten-track honeymoon. You can escape to secluded beach villas, hilltop retreats and luxurious hotels in Bogotá or Cartagena for candle-lit dinners and rooftop sundowners. The variety of activities like horse riding, hiking, salsa classes, tuk tuk rides and hot air ballooning also make Colombia an exciting family destination (ideally with older children or teenagers).

latin america best time to visit

Peru’s main appeal may be the legendary site of Machu Picchu and the nearby town of Cusco , but it’s also increasingly famous for its burgeoning culinary scene and wealth of cultural experiences. In 2024, new governmental efforts aim to expand the tourism infrastructure and reduce overtourism, promoting lesser-known archaeological sites and authentic cultural immersion.

latin america best time to visit

Machu Picchu attracts millions of international visitors a year for a reason, and is well worth visiting – but there are so many other things to do in Peru . The Sacred Valley and Choquequirao have their own Inca ruins, while Trujillo and Chiclayo are charming cities to explore. And then there’s Lima : a bustling metropolis with a well-earned reputation as one of the best cities in Latin America for food.

latin america best time to visit

Our travel designer David hails from Peru and has travelled extensively across the country. For places to stay, he recommends Sol y Luna in the Sacred Valley and the converted monastery of Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco.

I’m a Doctor. Dengue Fever Took Even Me by Surprise on Vacation.

A black-and-white illustration of an Aedes aegypti mosquito.

By Deborah Heaney

Dr. Heaney is a physician in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I hate mosquitoes so much that I take my own bug repellent to parties. But in early March, on a trip with my partner to the idyllic island of Curaçao off Venezuela, I was caught off guard by insect bites after our bed-and-breakfast hosts said that mosquitoes didn’t usually appear until late summer.

Near the end of the vacation, my legs began to ache. After I couldn’t keep up with my partner on a snorkeling adventure, he pulled me from the water. My ribs felt broken, as if I’d been smashed against large boulders in the sea. Later that day came intense fever, alternating with shaking chills.

Back in Michigan — weak, nauseated and dehydrated from explosive diarrhea — I ended up in the emergency department. Tests showed worrisome white blood cell levels and abnormal liver numbers. The physician assistant who saw me was perplexed; she gave me IV fluids and medication for nausea and sent me home.

A few days later I developed itching so severe that I couldn’t sleep. A bright red rash spread over both thighs and up my lower back. My brain was foggy, and my balance was so impaired that I would have failed a sobriety test. My primary care doctor had no answers. But as my head began to clear, it occurred to me to request a dengue fever test.

Two days later, the test was positive.

Despite my training in medicine, I was blindsided. Dengue, a mosquito-borne illness, is surging through Latin America and the Caribbean, including in Puerto Rico, where a public health emergency was declared last week. This year is likely to be the worst on record, in part because of El Niño-driven temperature spikes and extreme weather linked to climate change. As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns grow more erratic, the problem will get only worse.

But neither the traveling public nor our frontline health workers are prepared. Without urgent reforms to how we educate travelers, doctors, nurses and others — as well as reforms to public health surveillance and early warning systems — we will be doomed to miss textbook cases like mine. That means those infected with dengue will miss out on timely treatment, possibly even spreading the virus to areas where it was never found before.

The dengue virus, which is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, infects up to 400 million people every year in nearly every region of the world, but it is most prevalent in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and East Africa. Most cases are asymptomatic or, like mine, are considered mild, although the aptly nicknamed breakbone fever often doesn’t feel that way. Some 5 percent of cases progress to a severe, life-threatening disease including hemorrhagic fever.

One malicious feature of dengue is that when someone is infected a second time with a different type of the virus, the risk of severe illness is higher. A vaccine exists, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends it only for children ages 9 to 16 who had dengue before and live in places where the virus is common. That’s because, paradoxically, if you’ve never had dengue, the vaccine puts you at greater risk of severe illness your first time.

Dengue outbreaks, which, in the Americas, tend to occur every three to five years , now appear to be expanding their geographic reach as temperatures climb . The Aedes aegypti mosquito has typically had difficulty surviving and reproducing during the winter in temperate climates. But in parts of Brazil, which is experiencing a dengue emergency , the thermometer no longer dips as low in the winter as it once did, allowing the bugs to reproduce year-round. Overall, Latin America and the Caribbean have had three times the number of cases this year as reported for the same period in 2023, which was a record year. Higher temperatures are also helping the virus develop faster inside the mosquito, leading to a higher viral load and a higher probability of transmission. And mosquitoes are benefiting from standing water from rains and floods that are growing more extreme in a warming world.

As the virus spreads globally, travelers are bringing infections back to the continental United States. Based on 2024 numbers to date, this year should show a clear increase of cases here at home compared with 2023, given that the typical dengue season hasn’t even started yet. There could also be local outbreaks in places like Florida, Texas and California, which experienced small ones in the past. As Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, the chief of the C.D.C.’s dengue branch, told me by email, “Increased travel to places with dengue risk could lead to more local transmission, but the risk of widespread transmission in the continental United States is low.”

But since testing is done only on a small fraction of cases, many are going uncounted. I was the one who requested that I be tested. Had I not been given a diagnosis, I would not be aware of my increased risk of severe illness if I am reinfected. Getting a diagnosis is crucial to inform those infected in areas where the Aedes mosquito lives so that the virus doesn’t spread further.

The growing risk means travelers to regions with dengue must be savvier: They can check local news and U.S. State Department advisories, bring an effective insect repellent and protective clothing and book lodging with air-conditioning or screens on the windows and doors. Though Aedes aegypti mosquitoes now live year-round in many locations and are pushing northward into new regions , thanks to climate change and other factors, there are still seasons when the risk is greater, and travelers might consider avoiding trips during those periods. Travel insurance with medical coverage may also be a useful precaution.

For medical professionals, this should be a warning. We need to start thinking about dengue as a possible diagnosis, not just a piece of textbook trivia. We should ask about recent travel when treating patients presenting with symptoms, especially symptoms not easily explained by other diagnoses.

Medical schools are gradually integrating climate change effects into curriculums . This is essential, since malaria, Lyme, West Nile and other insect-borne diseases are on the rise, as are other conditions like heat illness, asthma and allergies that are worsened by climate change. This work must accelerate, and training must include those of us who are already practicing. State medical boards should consider mandating continuing education on tropical emerging illnesses, as they do on many other pertinent topics.

After receiving my positive test result, I called the emergency department to leave a message for my previous provider about my diagnosis, assuming she had never before seen dengue. If we continue on this trajectory, I’m certain this won’t be her last case.

Deborah Heaney is a preventive, occupational and environmental health physician practicing in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also holds a master’s degree in public health.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Best time to visit Guatemala

' src=

In this guide, we will explore the best time to visit Guatemala.

Guatemala is an awesome country to visit. Not only is it full of ancient ruins and culture , but it’s also home to many landscapes that vary from tropical jungle to cool mountainous towns and black sandy beaches.

What's in this guide?

In this guide, we’ll explore the best time to visit Guatemala, which includes whether we think this nation is worth visiting as well as how many days we recommend spending here (so you can work out a travel budget that fits you).

best time to visit guatemala

As well as looking at 5 of the very best things you can do in Guatemala, we’ll also answer your most burning questions in our FAQ section.

February and March are the two best months to head to Guatemala, since they are well within the dry season, and also warmer than the rest of the year.

Is Guatemala worth visiting?

Without a doubt yes!

This is one of our favorite Central American countries, for many of the reasons we mentioned at the start of this article.

Here you’ll also find it super cheap too – so there’s no need to worry about breaking the bank when traveling around Guatemala.

chicken bus antigua guatemala

Whilst it can feel over-touristy at times (in certain towns around Lake Atitlan and the bigger cities), the culture is still authentic and very much raw .

The markets are the best place to see how Guatemala operates on a local level, and there are also some incredible tours that you’ll want to do when here (climbing Acatenango Volcano is one of these).

What is the best month to visit Guatemala

We’ve found that February and March are the overall best. Still, within the dry season (which runs from November until March), clear skies will be perfect for getting outdoors and hiking , as well as for exploring cities without getting drenched.

It also means there’s a reduced chance of road flooding, which is a common occurrence in the rural areas of Guatemala.

Temperatures are also quite warm, which is ideal for visiting the more mountainous regions, such as a backpacking trip to Antigua (other times if the year can become quite cold into the evening).

These months are also perfect for experiencing traditional Guatemalan festivals , such as Semana Santa (if it falls in March for the year) as well as the annual Coffee Harvest festival.

How long should I spend in Guatemala

This is a question we often get asked, and with Guatemala, it depends on your preference and how you like to travel.

antigua guatemala market

Overall we would recommend a minimum of 10 days , where you can get to know the major sites of Antigua, Lake Atitlan and Flores. 2 and a half weeks is ideal, where you can also dive into the local culture more (such as taking trips to the more remote towns for the day).

We always recommend carrying a Spanish book like this one while backpacking but bear in mind that Guatemala is also one of the most popular places in Latin America to have a homestay with locals and learn Spanish .

If you’re up for this (and it is a positive and rewarding experience), then you can easily stay in this Central American country for many months.

Top things to do in Guatemala

Let’s now explore 5 of the very best things to do in Guatemala:

Visit Tikal Ruins

Guatemala is home to many mysterious Mayan ruins, which is a major part of the country’s appeal. One of the very best you can visit is the ruins of Tikal, which were built in the middle of the wild jungle between 250-900 A.D.

backpacking tikal guatemala

Despite being abandoned, they’re still in great condition today, where you can explore the infamous site which used to be the most important of all for this great civilisation .

Here you can witness the Temple IV – which is the overall tallest standing at a height of 213 ft, as well as see various temples and shrines which are slowly being reclaimed by moss and jungle life.

The Tikal Ruins are located close to the island town of Flores, which is situated in the north of Guatemala near the border with Belize.

We highly recommend coming with this organized tour , where you’ll have all transport and entry sorted for you as well as an expert guide teaching you everything you need to know about this incredible Mayan site.

Lounge on Guatemala’s Pacific Beaches

Whilst known for many things, Guatemala isn’t exactly famed for its beaches like other countries such as Costa Rica or Brazil. However, we often forget this Central American nation has a large coastline that’s found along both the Pacific and the Caribbean.

Those after an idyllic beach with blue water can head to Playa Blanca on the west coast of the county, which is just a short boat ride from Livingston.

Thankfully it’s still relatively untouched, meaning you can enjoy many secluded spots with virtually no other tourists around!

Along Guatemala’s Pacific Coast we’ll find many stunning black sand beaches , which have been formed due to volcanic activity.

El Paredón is a must-visit, which has recently turned into a backpacking haven. Here you’ll find awesome hostels here, as well as a great swell for those looking to get their surf on.

Hike Acatenango Volcano

Guatemala is known for its spiraling volcanoes, which often leave travelers’ jaws on the floor when the sun sets and reveals hot red glows in the near distance .

This is especially so in the town of Antigua, where you’ll often see puffs of smoke throughout the day too.

acatenango volcano guatemala

Those looking for the ultimate experience will want to hike up Acatenango Volcano , which is located close to Antigua. Here you’ll work your way up the challenging route, and then set up camp for the night.

Waking up in the early morning you’ll experience something truly unforgettable – with the sun rising above the peaks and clouds which sit beneath you.

If you haven’t been blown away by a landscape before – then you certainly will here! You’ll need to go with an organized tour to summit Acatenango, and we recommend this one which includes all meals as well as sleeping equipment.

Explore the Mayan Towns around Lake Atitlan

This stunning lake is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Guatemala – and for good reason too. Circled by imposing volcanoes, you can head on a boat ride whilst seeing some of the most beautiful lake views you can possibly have in Latin America.

lake atitlan guatemala

There’s also many unique towns located on its shores to be explored too . San Marcos is the ultimate place to sit back and hang out, where it has a more bohemian vibe and is perfect for a yoga retreat or winding down for some time.

San Juan la Laguna is the best place to enjoy a vibrant atmosphere, where you’ll find many awesome bars, hostels and restaurants.

Another worthy town is Santa Catarina Palopo, which usually lies under the radar for most travelers. However, this small town is great for hiking and getting into nature , with many picturesque routes to take.

Visit the Cascades of Semuc Champey

Aside from the town of Flores, the east portion of Guatemala is much less visited compared to the west and central regions. There’s in fact many worthwhile things to see here, and the one that takes the cherry is Semuc Champey.

semuc champey

Situated within the deep jungle, you’ll find this site which is a series of stunning, crystal-clear cascades that have a turquoise hue. It’s the perfect place to go for a cold swim, which will especially be needed after the hike to get here.

They can often get quite busy (especially in the afternoons and also during the weekend), so it’s best to plan a little so you can enjoy the site with few others around.

We highly recommend joining this tour from nearby Lanquin (which is the closest town to Semuc Champey). Here you’ll have all transport included, as well as a guided tour through caves and even a tubing experience down a river too!

Guatemala FAQ’s

Cheapest time to fly to guatemala.

Any months within the wet season will be cheaper, given they put off most tourists (and also are more awkward to schedule holidays around. This is from April until November .

The overall best month for a visit here would be October, which is not only one for the cheapest for flights and hotels, however it is a shoulder month so is not as chilly and wet as the others.

When is the best time to visit Lake Atitlan?

Those who want to visit this stunning lake are best coming around the dry season (November until April). We personally recommend the months of February and March , as they are quite dry and also have less tourists packed in the towns around the lake. You’ll also find numerous religious events too, which will give a much more authentic experience here.

Is Antigua Guatemala worth visiting?

By far one of the most popular destinations in the region of Central America, Antigua literally has it all. Here you’ll find one the prettiest cities in Latin America, which is full of painted arches, colonial architecture and stunning churches . There’s also a backdrop of volcanoes too (which you can also hike up to). Whilst it’s definitely got more touristy in recent years, it’s still a great place to base yourself for a week whilst enjoying its vibes and also for heading off on day trips from here.

What is Guatemala known for?

And that’s all for this guide on the best time to visit Guatemala.

This Central American nation is always a fan-favourite for those heading to this area of the world, and for good reason too.

Here you’ll find a warm and friendly culture, along with some truly epic landscapes . It’s also a great county for having a local homestay experience or for learning Spanish in a reputable school.

In this guide we’ve covered the best time to visit Guatemala, as well as our own personal recommendations for you to get the most out of a trip here.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

You’ll flip for these burgers — and more.

A trusted travel guide brand has named the best fast food restaurants in America — and the list contains some delicious surprises.

Fodor’s writer Geena Truman compiled the list , reportedly based on a year of extensive travel.

“Visions of golden-fried cheese curds, succulent smash burgers, and cheese-topped fries distracted me from the rolling scenery of America’s backroads,” confessed Truman, an unabashed fast food lover.

And while many of us might just pull into the nearest familiar-looking chain, the intrepid eater said she sought out regional and less obvious options, from New England to the Pacific Northwest.

Here are her picks — do you agree?

1. Culver’s

Calling the Wisconsin-based butter burger and frozen custard chain “the most delicious fast food pit stop in America,” the author couldn’t speak highly enough of the homespun Midwest favorite that’s now located in 26 states (and hopefully more to come). Truman gives a nod to the restaurant’s famed side of fried cheese curds, noting that Culver’s “gives the outer appearance of fast-food but outperforms all others in taste.”

2. Shake Shack

Admitting that maybe she’s a little biased towards frozen custard purveyors — honestly, can we blame her — Truman talks up Danny Meyer’s still growing burger and sweet treat chain, which, incidentally, was modeled after the Midwestern stands of Meyer’s St. Louis childhood.

A whopping 25 states now have their own Shack, with more to come.

“The perfect meal? A coffee custard shake, a simple all-American Angus Beef hot dog with cheese dipping sauce, and a smash burger,” Truman writes, giving her appreciation to the “real food with real ingredients” that’s worth the extra money you pay.

3. In-N-Out

In-N-Out Burger new store in a Mission Revival style building with domes, archways and red tile on Del Obispo St, San Juan Capistrano, CA

“If you want a *cheap* fast-food burger with fresh toppings, a classic Americana malted milkshake, and cheesy fries with just a dash of salt, this is the place for you,” Truman said.

She notes that the food feels fresher than at other fast food chains, saying that she “can eat a Double-Double Burger animal-style with a heaping pile of fresh onions, cheese fries, and a chocolate malt shake” and still walk out feeling good. Millions of West Coasters would agree.

The Southern California institution has been expanding in recent years, to Oregon, Colorado, Texas and soon, Tennessee and perhaps elsewhere in the Southeast.

4. Whataburger

Whataburger sandwich

What In-N-Out is to Calfifornia, the home of one of fast food’s biggest burgers (at least measured across) is to Texas. Truman calls out the chain’s “spicy ketchup, taquitos, honey-butter chicken biscuit, well-battered onion rings, Green Chile Burger, and oozing patty melt.”

However, she says that eating here is more about the size of the food than the quality, saying that it’s “not a mind-blowing eating event.”

The chain has expanded to states like Arizona and now, Nevada, where a sparkling, giant-sized branch that would make Texans jealous recently opened at the foot of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. (Talk about an interesting pairing.)

5. Raising Cane’s

Raising Cane's

Georgia has Chick-Fil-A. Louisiana has Raising Cane’s. Truman appears to prefer the latter, ranking them ahead of the Polynesian Sauce purveyor.

Here, however, the menu is even simpler — chicken fingers from fresh-never-frozen birds, served with crinkle-cut fries, creamy coleslaw, thick, buttery Texas Toast and sides of remoulade-style Cane’s sauce. “Raising Cane’s perfected the recipe,” Truman says of the chicken fingers.

The chain has spread across the country, even making inroads right at the heart of NYC, with locations in Times Square, Harlem and the East Village.

6. Five Guys

Pedestrians and shoppers walking past the Five Guys hamburger restaurant in Barcelona, Spain

“While the burgers are tasty and completely customizable…it’s really the fries that shine,” Truman opines of the popular and pricey chain that’s located all over the country and increasingly, the world. (Five Guys Barcelona, anyone?)

“Hefty bags of Idaho potatoes are literally stacked for all to see in the hallways of their restaurants. Freshly cut daily into “boardwalk-style” slivers and fried up in peanut oil (nut-allergists beware) Five Guys also offers them “Cajun-style” for travelers who want a little spice in their life,” Truman says.

7. Chick-Fil-A

Chick-Fil-A products

Appreciating their “juicy deluxe chicken sandwich and tasty breaded nuggets,” Truman has less to say about the wildly-popular (and fast-growing) chain, referencing the “hype” and the long lines at newly-opened franchises.

8. Dave’s Hot Chicken

This celeb-backed chain — he fastest-growing fast food concept in America, the author writes — takes a concept that’s still typically found at trendy one-off spots and markets it to the masses, quite successfully.

So maybe it’s not Nashville-level great, but Truman calls a Dave’s meal the “perfect road trip snack.”

Choose from the “chicken tender slider (topped with smoky cheese and very California kale slaw) or a couple of the extra large-sized chicken tenders,” Truman suggests — urging diners to pair whatever they order with the restaurant’s creamy mac and cheese.

9. Kelly’s Roast Beef

Noting that this Boston-area institution inspired Arby’s, Truman raves about the “their “25-day aged beef knuckle roast, cooked in-house to the perfect medium rare, sliced to order, and placed delicately on a bun with a rich BBQ sauce and melty white cheese.”

The pride of Revere Beach is harder to find than most of the brands on this list, but it’s growing — and it could definitely beat Arby’s if it grew enough.

10. White Castle

Exterior view of a White Castle restaurant in Clifton, NJ on March 17, 2018.

Reminding readers that the spiritual home of the slider predates McDonald’s — true fact — Truman says that she didn’t tap the classic chain because of 1920s nostalgia or the restaurant’s place in the American pantheon.

“It’s the sliders,” she says, noting that there are now 12 differnet kindsto choose from, including fish, chicken and waffles and plant-based meats.

11. Dick’s

Dick’s is easily the In-N-Out of the Puget Sound, and though we’d have chosen the quirky and delicious Taco Time NW to represent that region, a trip to this basic and delicious burger drive-in is something akin to a cultural experience, essential to any road trip that includes the Seattle area.

Touting their “delicious beef burgers, salty fries, and thick old-school shakes served from walk-up windows,” Truman also gives them cred for treating their employees well and their community spirit, too.

The Seattle native also shouts out another regional chain, Zips, for their “huge tubs of crinkle-cut fries, behemoth burgers with three sizzling meat patties and sliced ham, country-style chicken strips, and freshly fried and battered fish filets pad the monster-sized menu.”

12. Jollibee

Group of people, including Chan Heng Chee, Yan Zibei, and Albert Tsai, standing outside the first New York location of Jollibee, a popular Filipino fast food chain

The top fast food chain in The Philippines — with a cheerful bee as its mascot — is increasingly showing up all over America, and Truman is definitely into the idea, saying there’s “no other fast food chain quite like it in America.”

Go for “crispy fried chicken, beef patty steaks with gravy, spicy tuna pies, and their trademark sweet-sauce-topped spaghetti meals,” she says, calling the chicken — when executed correctly — “better than KFC.”
