Van Morrison thrilled fans in the first of two shows at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Friday, September 22. The legendary artist, known for hits like “Have I Told You Lately,” “Brown-Eyed Girl,” and “Moondance,” was particularly strong Friday night, driving his band through a high-energy set of rock, country, and skiffle classics along with several of his own hits in a show that was re-scheduled from last May. Morrison’s daughter Shana opened.

When most people near 80 years of age, they begin to take it easy.

The classic rock legend, who’s celebrating his 78th birthday on Aug. 31, is embarking on a quick 11-concert North American tour in support of his latest studio album “Moving On Skiffle” to ring in the occasion.

Van Morrison controversy

In 2020, Van Morrison protested social distancing measures and fought “pseudo science.”

His most public anti-COVID effort was the release of three songs that were anti-lockdown.

As a result, Northern Ireland health minister, Robin Swann claimed Morrison’s COVID-related songs were “dangerous” which led to a defamation lawsuit after Morrison called Swann a “fraud.”

The Van Morrison performances on Thursday, May 11 and Friday, May 12 have been rescheduled to Friday, September 22 at 7pm and Sunday, September 24 at 7pm. No action is needed at this time. Van Morrison Announces New U.S. Tour Dates

Van Morrison has announced a series of U.S. tour dates that will commence on Sept. 25 in Greenwood Village, Colo., travel down the California coast and then finish with three shows at Las Vegas' the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in February next year.

The tour will follow the release of Morrison's most recent album, 2020's  Latest Record Project: Volume 1 , a collection of songs written largely in lockdown.

“I’m getting away from the perceived same songs, same albums all the time,” Morrison said in a statement at the time of the album's release in May. “This guy’s done 500 songs, maybe more, so hello? Why do you keep promoting the same 10? I’m trying to get out of the box.”

As coronavirus restrictions lift in some places, they're enacted even further in others. In the U.K, more than 5,000 shows have been canceled as the result of a four-week lockdown extension, a factor that may have contributed to Morrison's move to schedule U.S. shows.

Morrison has been critical of socially distanced concerts and has referred to "pseudo science" when discussing lockdown limitations of the past year. He and Eric Clapton recently teamed up for a new song, " The Rebels ," a reworked version of a track from Latest Record Project .

Time in a bottle: Jim Croce's son A.J. brings his father's songs to Providence

The son of two musicians, A.J. Croce has played piano for as long as he can remember, but the 52-year-old musical artist didn't start playing guitar until he was in his 30s, a practice that helped him realize a stronger familiarity with his hitmaker father, Jim Croce.

Given the guitar his father used when he wrote hit songs like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Operator," and "Time in a Bottle," Croce was motivated to learn the instrument, and he found working with his late father's guitar changed his own writing.

"I wrote simpler, more relatable songs," he said, noting that he'd previously worked with the piano in writing for genres such as blues and jazz.

Having toured with Ray Charles and B.B. King before he turned 21, Croce has had a long, distinguished musical career. He has recorded 10 albums; 22 of his singles have been listed on a variety of Top 20 charts.

Now, he's embarked on a special tour where he and his band play mostly his father's songs. The "Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary Tour" will play at the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Providence on Feb. 17.

A family link to RISD

Croce was just days shy of his second birthday when his father died on Sept. 20, 1973, in a plane crash in Louisiana. He really only knows his father through his songs, and the stories of his friends and family members, including his mother, Ingrid, who attended the Rhode Island School of Design before leaving to record an album with her husband.

Playing his father's songs is "emotional in the sense that it's personal, it's family," Croce said in a recent interview. "I relate to his sense of humor and his storytelling. We both are storytellers. My fascination with it probably came from hearing his stories."

A.J. Croce hasn't had it easy. As a child, he lost his vision for several years before it came back, at least partially in his left eye. Speaking from a cafe in Nashville, where he lives, Croce acknowledged that his vision is again deteriorating.

He doesn't spend time feeling sorry for himself. "Life is like that," he said. "We all go through things."

In 2018, A.J. Croce lost his wife of 24 years, Marlo, whom he called his best friend and who died suddenly from a rare heart virus, according to a story in the San Diego Tribune . He has two adult children.

While the "Croce Plays Croce" concerts honor an artist who was taken from his family and fans far too soon, at age 30, Croce says concertgoers shouldn't expect a somber experience.

Fans can expect an 'energetic, live show'

"People often come in thinking the show will be a quiet, nostalgic, precious display of my father’s songs – but it’s not precious at all. We give them an energetic, live show," Croce said in an announcement for the show.

The tour played 16 shows in the fall before resuming in late January and will continue through November. According to Croce, the show attracts three generations of fans, many of whom would have discovered Jim Croce's music long after his death.

The two-hour shows mostly feature Jim Croce's songs with a few of A.J.'s mixed in. The band takes requests and, Croce said, every show is different.

"It's a party, amazing, enjoyable and humbling," Croce said.

Fan reaction isn't entirely what Croce expected

"I think people get a sense of my father, but they also get a sense of me," Croce said. "It blows me away the number of people that come to hear him and become fans of mine. It wasn't what I expected."

Croce is backed by two singers and a band, with members who have played with some of the biggest names in the business, including Van Morrison, Steve Miller, Doctor John and Delbert McClinton.

"I've got this incredible group," Croce said. "I'm the only one who hasn't won a Grammy."

The tour coincides with the release of a 3 CD or 3 LP compilation by BMG called "The Definitive Croce" and includes Jim Croce's albums "Life and Times," "I Got A Name" and "You Don't Mess Around."

Advertisements for the concert show images of Croce and his father sitting side by side with their guitars. The family resemblance is noticeable. Both are lean, dark and have thick heads of hair. Missing for A.J. is the big, bushy mustache his dad wore.

The image heralds a legacy being kept alive, but also raises a question of what might have been.

Croce said, "I think we'd have had a great time playing together."
