This best-of-Cinque Terre tour is one of the most budget-friendly options out there. Just be mindful that when you book the price does seem to go up quite a bit, but it’s still more affordable than the other combination trips in this guide. You’ll also get to visit the stunning Porto Venere, while the majority of combination tours include a visit to Pisa instead.

In my personal opinion, I prefer Porto Venere than Pisa. Porto Venere is one of my most beautiful coastal towns in Italy . It is so unique, and there is so much more to see and explore here. But Pisa is also known for one of the most iconic Italian landmarks , so if you prefer to explore history, I recommend to choose a tour that offers Pisa.

“Luca was amazing!!! So knowledgeable and kind-hearted. He knew all the shortcuts on navigating the train between villages, he treated the whole group like family and took such good care of us. He even gave my husband and I a metro ticket back to our hotel (we didn’t purchase one in time and quickly handed us his as the train was leaving!) What a great guide!” Maria ( read more reviews now )

Cinque Terre Frequent-Asked Questions

How far is cinque terre from florence.

Cinque Terre is made up of five different villages; Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso, Riomaggiore, and Vernazza. The village of Riomaggiore is the closest to Florence at a distance of around 102 miles (165 km), with the journey taking around 2.5 hours by car.

Monterosso is the furthest village from Tuscany’s capital city at around 115 miles (186 km). However, all the villages are located relatively close together, so you won’t have any issues traveling to them from Florence!

Is Cinque Terre worth visiting from Florence?

In my opinion, if you have the time, I’d highly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Cinque Terre. This will give you time to explore all of the villages, as well as some nearby attractions. You’ll also get to head out on a couple of boat tours if you wish.

However, for those limited on time, heading out on a Florence to Cinque Terre tour is a fantastic option! All the logistics will be covered for you, and you’ll get to see some of the area’s best (and most beautiful) spots in a short amount of time.

What is the best way to visit Cinque Terre from Florence?

There are several ways to reach Cinque Terre from Florence. Many people choose to rent a car a car and drive themselves as this allows plenty of flexibility. This is what I have done on my first trip from Florence to Cinque Terre. Other people choose to make use of public transport, as several train services run to Cinque Terre from Florence.

However, in my opinion, if you’re only spending a day in Cinque Terre then I’d recommend a tour . Not only will the transport be sorted for you, but you’ll also have a guide, who will teach you all about the local area. You’ll get to visit some hidden gems too!

Can you do Pisa and Cinque Terre in one day from Florence?

You certainly can! Pisa is one of the most important landmarks in Italy , and it is just over an hour’s drive from Florence so is easily accessible. From there, it’s around a 1.5-hour drive to Riomaggiore, which is the closest Cinque Terre village to Tuscany’s capital. Of course, you can hire a car or Vespa, but there are also tours that offer this!

This 12-hour tour includes a visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Cinque Terre. You’ll be traveling in a small group and will get to head out on a scenic boat ride. On this tour, you’ll get around by train with the tickets being included in the price.

Is it better to stay in Florence or Cinque Terre?

Both Florence and Cinque Terre are fantastic places to stay, it just depends on what you’re after. Florence is an incredible city with so much to offer, and there are plenty of things to do here. You’ll also have ample day trip opportunities including the Chianti Region, Pisa, and of course, Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre is a better option for those who are looking to relax. There are five villages in total so it’s up to you where you choose to stay, and you can easily travel between them on the train.

  • Levanto : Via Gaetano Semenza

You will love the Monterosso Village

Monterosso is the largest village in the Cinque Terre National Park and during the summer season you will see rows of coloured beach umbrellas along its coast. Indeed, you find  here the only sandy beach of the Cinque Terre. For this reason many Ligurian people also come here during the season to have a swim. A promontory divides the village in two parts. On one side, you will find the beach and the Railway Station. On the other one, the small harbour for ferry boats, facing the old town with its narrow streets and old buildings. The alleys are very suggestive and full of bars, restaurants and shops.

In Monterosso you will have free time to relax, enjoy some shopping and, if you wish, swim in the beautiful blue water .

Remember that Monterosso has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world according to Forbes 2006 .

During our last cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, we’ve booked a tour with BellaItaliaTour in order to discover Cinque Terre. It has been a really beautiful day. They were really organized, so everything goes well and we had wonderful times in total relax. We enjoy Cinque Terre. Each village is a real gem. We appreciated especially Monterosso, where we had a real Italian lunch, with Spaghetti al Pesto: wonderful! We came back to Livorno timely for departure, exactly as promised. We suggest to visit Cinque Terre and we suggest also to do it with the expert guides of Bellaitaliatour.com We were really satisfied. 5 stars! If we will have another travel in Italy, we surely will book a private tour in Tuscany with them!

We just returned from a cruise and port stop in Livorno. We booked the tour to the Cinque Terre and a quick stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa with your company, BellaItalia. I couldn’t have been more pleased with this tour and give it 5 stars! We were picked up promptly at the port and driven by van to the village of Riomaggiore where we met another guide who took us by boat to the other villages in the Cinque Terre of Corniglia, and Vernazza, and Monteresso. We were given time to browse the shops and eat lunch. We then returned by train to meet the other driver who took us back to the port after quick stop in Pisa. The scenery was absolutely stunning and weather was gorgeous. Our guide told us where to get the best pictures, where to eat and shop and we are excited to return next June again. We were returned on time to our port and the guides were very knowledgeable and friendly and were able to really customize our trip from start to finish. I am also a travel agent and have traveled extensively and this was a top notch tour company that I have already recommended to several of my clients. I can’t rate it high enough!

Bellatour was fantastic. We are grandparents who travel with 5 and 7 year old grandsons and their parents. We were on a cruise docking in Livorno, We had seen Florence in the past and wanted Cinque Terra tour. Not a lot upon searching but found Bellatour with some great reviews. Bellatour is fantastic! We were met at the dock by Libera and her driver. In the van and away we went. Her mastery of the English language is very good. We had a very delightful and educational drive to our first stop in the Cinque Terra area, while we strolled the town, she picked up our boat tickets. We took the boat to 3 villages and the train back. The boys had time to swim for a bit and we had time for casual walking and shopping. Great quick stop in Pisa on the way back, even though it was side trip. I can only say this is one of the best tours we have ever done.

Cinque terre is not to be missed. We were able to go to 4 of the 5 towns. Each is unique and beautiful in its own way. The boat ride was great to be able to see the towns from the water.

We decided to do a shore excursion from the port of Livorno to Cinque Terre. It was a long way out and time was limited but the efficiency of Marta and our driver (sorry I could not recall his name) made our trip completely enjoyable. Will definitely recommend Bellaitalia Tours if you are planning a shore excursion to Cinque Terre. The price is reasonable, the car is clean and Marta gave us a lot of relevant information not only about the 5 villages but the places we passed along the way.

Picked up at port in a comfortable van, a lovely guide who provided interesting information and facts and the stunning and beautiful villages of the Cinque Terre… a day to remember.

We were two couples in Livorno Port on 12 September 2018 and we had pre-booked a private tour to Cinque Terre. I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. Luca was a magic guide – he gave great commentary, negotiated the ferries so well and kept us informed. Salvatore was a great driver and very polite. Cinque Terre and the whole experience of this tour was a highlight of our six week trip. Loved the place and will definitely be back. Thanks so much Luca and Salvatore. Don’t hesitate to book with BellaItalia.

We were cruising and decided to book a private shore excursion to Cinque Terre. It was the smartest choice we made. Marta, our tour guide was expecting right in time in the port (the company has clearance to enter the port, so no need to use the shuttle or walk!) and we headed to Cinque Terre. Marta was amazing explaining to us all there was to know about the place and left us free time for ourselves. We took the ferries/boats to move from one town to another and everything was smooth and peaceful! Cinque Terre is a must see and better if you hired this company.

You’ll visit four of the Italy's most beautiful seaside villages, with free time to get lost in their cobbled streets, find a spot for a delicious Mediterranean lunch, laze on picture-perfect beaches, and enjoy a boat ride along the coast.

Setting off early to make the most of the day, you'll meet your local guide at Piazzale Montelungo bus terminal in central Florence, where you'll board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach for a journey through Tuscany to the Ligurian Coast—home to the villages of Cinque Terre. You'll arrive first in Manarola, before visiting Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, and Riomaggiore, traveling between them on the local train and by boat to see a different perspective of the coast.

Although this trip operates with a larger group than you'll find on most of our tours, a lot of your time today will be free to explore the villages, viewpoints, and local bars and restaurants independently. Your local trip leader will be there to provide advice on where to go, what to do, and to make sure you get from village to village (and back to Florence, of course!).

Travel From Florence

Your day begins with a journey through northern Tuscany on an air-conditioned coach, starting from a convenient location in downtown Florence, close to most hotels and the Santa Maria Novella train station. Sit back and enjoy the scenery as your trip leader shares stories and advice on how to spend your day on the beautiful Italian Riviera.

The UNESCO Villages of Cinque Terre

Only a few decades ago, these five quaint towns on the Ligurian coast were isolated and unknown to most of the world. On this trip you will explore the wonderful natural harbors and streets of brightly painted houses that used to guide the fishermen ashore.

Your first stop is to explore the medieval alleyways of Manarola, the second smallest of the five villages, and famous for a sweet dessert wine called Sciacchetrà. After a quick briefing, you'll be free to stroll around independently until it's time to catch the coastal train to Vernazza.

The colorful port of Vernazza is regarded as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, and is overlooked by a centuries-old castle high on the rocks. Another short train journey will bring you to the wonderful beaches of Monterosso, where you can sunbathe on the sand and take in the breeze of the Mediterranean.

Sail to the Last Stop

Riomaggiore famous for its panoramic views, blue waters and more amazing pastel homes. To arrive in Riomaggiore, you'll sail down the coast by boat, taking in a whole new perspective of the cliffs and towns dotted along the rocky seafront. You'll have time here to enjoy the views from the panoramic terraces of the village, and perhaps refresh yourself with a cold drink or two before heading back to the city.

In the late afternoon, your driver will return with the coach to take you and the rest of your group back to central Florence. If you're hungry from all the sunshine and exploring, your guide will be happy to advise on some great nearby places for your evening meal.

Great Day Trip

We had an amazing time on this day trip to Cinque Terre! Our tour guide was very informative and we appreciated him pointing out all the special things to see at each stop. The Cappuccini church at the top of the ridge in Monterosso al Mare was stunning...would have never known to climb up there without our guide tip! Great tour...Thank you!

How long will we have at each stop?

At each village, you'll have about 1 to 1.5 hours of free time to explore, shop, try the local food, or even take a swim.

That's up to you, since most of your exploring will be done independently. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views if you don't feel like walking much. Please bear in mind that these villages are very old, with some steep inclines and uneven streets, so we don't recommend this tour for people with significant mobility issues.

Your tour includes tickets for the local train between villages, which your guide will provide. Your final journey, to Riomaggiore, will be by boat.

Will we have a tour guide the whole day?

You'll be accompanied by a trip leader throughout the day who will ensure you arrive and depart at the right stops. Amazing trip through the highlights of Italy, saw all the places I wanted to. Had lots of freedom and free time to do what we wanted to do, didn't have to spend every second with the group which what I liked about it. Tour leader was amazing, in each location would give us maps, highlight places, how to get to spots, recommend things when we were not sure. Just really good trip through Italy, saw heaps, ate heaps, and made new friends!

What people love about Cinque Terre Tours

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years

Full Itinerary

Depart from florence.

The group will meet at the front of Santa Maria Novella train station and depart Florence at 7.30am, travelling by coach to enter the National Park at the village of Manarola and get a first glimpse of the colourful buildings and verdant vineyards that characterise the area on a panoramic walk. Here you will hop on the train to begin the Cinque Terre tour at Corniglia. An expert guide will lead the group throughout the tour, so getting lost needn’t be a concern!

Explore Corniglia

Upon arrival in Corniglia it is time to test out your walking boots – there are 380 steps from the train station to the clifftop village, but we promise the picture-perfect views of the sea and surrounding hillside are ample reward for your exertions!

For ONLY €15 we can arrange for you a hearty two-course meal at a family-run restaurant in Corniglia

Venture to vernazza.

After lunch comes the real adventure: a hike of approximately two miles along the medieval mule trails that skirt the cliffs and connect the hilltop towns of the Cinque Terre (if you choose the tour option without hiking, the train will be used instead to move between villages). You will leave the trail when you reach the village of Vernazza, one of the prettiest and most characteristic areas you will see on the Cinque Terre tour. Here you will have some free time to sit in one of the cheerful bars and cafés or even have a cooling swim in the sea – it’s the perfect time to get refreshed and prepare for the next part of the tour.

If you do fancy a swim, don’t forget to bring suitable clothing and a towel. You don’t want to be completing the rest of the Cinque Terre tour in soggy clothes!

Wine and shopping in monterosso.

After departing Vernazza, the group will take a short train ride to Monterosso, a village renowned for its beautiful beach and artisan shops. Here you will have the option to relax on the golden sands, browse the shops for souvenirs or even sample some local wine.

A Scenic Boat Ride

Depending on the weather conditions the next part of the experience is a boat ride along the coast to Riomaggiore, where we finish the Cinque Terre tour. We guarantee that the approach from the water will have you reaching for your camera to capture the town’s quintessential Cinque Terre beauty.

Return to Florence

After a quick train trip you will arrive in La Spezia, where a coach will take the group back to Florence. Though your legs might feel tired, you’re sure to have a spring in your step after experiencing this fantastic tour – there’s nothing quite like the Cinque Terre tour!

Know before you go

  • Because of the nature of the tour, we are unable to accept small children or anyone with walking difficulties
  • Suitable walking shoes are mandatory: sneakers, walking boots or closed toe shoes with non-slip soles - no flipflops!
  • In case of unexpected closure of the paths for unforseen events, alternative routes will be taken instead

Amazing tour with the best guide ever

by: Ana Chavez on Tripadvisor

My husband and I love this tour. Kudos to our great and amazing guide Ado, the best ever!!! He made sure we were all taking care of. He shared with us great historical information along the way and once we arrived at each of the towns. Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a beautiful area along the Mediterranean sea. The 5 towns were all spectacular.

Great experience!!

by: Brenda on Tripadvisor

Both Ginebra and David were awesome guides! We had such a great time during this tour even though it was rainy and busy at the train stations. Tour guides were very organized and had scheduled “comfort brakes” in order for us to use the facilities. We were on Giny’s group and she was amazing!! Very nice and knowledgeable. Doing the 5 villages in one day is a challenging task but she helped us to enjoy this amazing trip and provided great recommendations of places to visit/try. We didn't do the hike since it was muddy and seemed to be kind of physically challenging, but people who did it really liked it. We would definitely book a tour again with Walkabout Florence!

Cinque Terre is a breathtaking area in northern Italy. The tour is very regimented. The views in all 5 towns are incredible. If you have any mobility issues this may not be the tour for you. And that’s without the hike from Corniglia to Vernazza.

Wonderful day at Cinque Terra

by: Susanne P on Tripadvisor

The hike between the 2 villages. The scenery was beautiful. Our guides Davido and Dave were excellent! Make sure to wear appropriate shoes for the terrain!! A great way to learn about the area so to go back and explore more on our own at another time.

Amazing day!

What an amazing day! Our guides, Alicia and Genevra, were incredibly knowledgeable and showed us all the beautiful locations to take our best photos! They made getting around easy and stress free. Highly recommend this day trip!

Best tour guides!

by: Corinneg20222 on Tripadvisor

Alice and Alessandro were excellent tour guides! They are both very knowledgeable and experienced tour guides. There were unfortunately issues with the trains because of construction on the train lines, which were out of their control. They also had to deal with difficult passengers, which, by itself, is always a significant stressor on a tour guide. They handled these stressful situations very well and, despite missing several train connections because the trains were overcrowded, Alice and Alessandro were still able to improvise and give us a hiking tour of the villages and a boat ride. The issues could be minimized, however, if the company had a better contingency plan when there are inevitable issues with the trains, such as using an alternative means of transportation if the trains go down. For example, using the bus instead of the train, if that is possible (it might not be possible because there could be required permits or restrictive ordinances). However, if a better contingency was available, it could have saved a lot of standing around and waiting for trains. Overall, even with the train issues, I would still recommend this tour because it would be difficult to navigate cinque terre without professional tour guides.

This day trip was fantastic!! We loved Stefano and Tony. They did an amazing job at keeping the large group organized and we were able to sit back, relax and let them take the wheel. We loved the hike as well. Wasn’t too difficult and definitely worth it!

The guides Marco and Chiara were excellent. They were prompt, organized, knowledgeable, approachable, gave very clear instructions and spoke excellent English. They were very patient and very kind. They also never asked for a tip and appeared to truly love their job. You are fortunate to have them as your employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do hotel pick-ups or do you have a central meeting point.

We do not organise hotel pick-ups for difficulties with parking and scheduling, but our meeting point at Florence's main train station is very central and should be easy to get to. Many hotels are located within easy walking distance of the train station, otherwise a taxi (you could ask your hotel to book it for you) would be the fastest option, dropping you off right at our meeting point.

WE ARE CATCHING A TRAIN AFTER THE TOUR, CAN WE BRING OUR LUGGAGE WITH US?

Our tours leave from and return to the main railway station in Florence, so if you are travelling on by train, bring your luggage with you in the morning and take the train in the evening directly after the tour. You will save both time and money by not having to use the luggage deposit! We recommend that you book any rail travel from Florence after 9pm to allow time for any traffic delays. We cannot be held responsible for any loss or extra expense incurred in the unlikely case of delays due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING AND WEAR?

Please dress appropriately for the day. Suitable walking shoes are essential and remember to bring something waterproof in case of rain. The summer months can be very hot; a hat, sunglasses, sunblock, a water bottle and comfortable clothes are highly recommended. If you want to take a refreshing swim in the sea during your free time make sure you remember to bring swimmers and a towel with you! Don't forget your camera!

ARE SNEAKERS OK IF I DON'T HAVE PROPER WALKING SHOES?

You MUST have suitable walking shoes if you have chosen the hiking tour option; sneakers with closed toe shoes with non slip soles are acceptable. Flip-flops, sandals or high heels are not suitable!

HOW LONG IS THE BUS RIDE?

The ride to the Cinque Terre is about two hours.

CAN WE STAY IN THE CINQUE TERRE?

If you would like to stay over in the Cinque Terre area, you will be able to bring your luggage with you on the coach, where it can remain all day (locked up in the hold underneath). Then you can collect your luggage from our driver at the end of the tour when the rest of the group returns to Florence.

IS THE TOUR SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?

The tour is open to all ages from the age of 8.

IS THERE MUCH WALKING INVOLVED?

Only if you choose the tour option with the Cinque Terre Hike! The hiking part of the tour for people of above average fitness who enjoy trail walking. Although we do not cover long distances, there are many steps, steep slopes and the walk can be strenuous at times, especially in the heat of the summer. We are unable to accept anyone with walking difficulties or wheelchair users.
