India’s EaseMyTrip Invests in B2B Travel Portal ETrav Tech

Having diversified into hotels and insurance, EaseMyTrip now ventures into the B2B travel market with its latest investment.

Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip.com on Monday confirmed an investment in business-to-business (B2B) travel portal ETrav Tech .

The deal, worth INR 330 million ($4 million), sees EaseMyTrip secure a 4.94% stake in the Mumbai-based enterprise.

ETrav Tech specializes in offering travel application programming interfaces (APIs) to businesses, enabling them to access competitive travel deals and content from global travel suppliers. These services include flight APIs, holiday packages, hotel APIs, bus APIs, and visa services.

ETrav Tech also extends its reach internationally with an office in Dubai, as disclosed in EaseMyTrip’s regulatory filing on Sunday.

Through this investment, EaseMyTrip looks to leverage ETrav Tech’s technological prowess and expertise in catering to B2B clientele. According to EaseMyTrip this is expected to boost its service offerings to corporate clients.

“We aim to diversify our portfolio in the non-air segments. After investing in hotels, we now intend to enhance our services for our corporate clientele. The investment with ETrav Tech will be pivotal for this,” said Nishant Pitti, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip.

An Increasingly Diverse Business

EaseMyTrip has been actively expanding its foothold through acquisitions in various travel segments in recent years.

The company reported a 9.6% increase in consolidated net profit to INR 456 million ($5.5 million) for the period ending December 2023 compared to the corresponding period last year. Moreover, its operating revenue surged by 18% year-on-year to INR 1.61 billion ($19.3 million) in December.

Earlier this year, EaseMyTrip ventured into the insurance sector with the establishment of its subsidiary, EaseMyTrip Insurance Broker, marking a strategic diversification of its service portfolio.

The company looks to tap into the lucrative insurance market by addressing customer needs through specialized products.

“The new venture is expected to solidify EaseMyTrip’s position in the industry and cater to an INR 7.9 trillion market ($95 billion) with EaseMyTrip’s own 20-million userbase,” the company said in a regulatory filing about its entry into the insurance sector.

EaseMyTrip’s Latest Investments

Speaking earlier to Skift, EaseMyTrip co-founder Prashant Pitti had said the company is now looking to grow its non-air business by acquiring companies that are profitable, tech driven, asset-light and disruptive.

In its pursuit of reinforcing non-air business segments, EaseMyTrip acquired controlling stakes in several Indian travel companies last year . This included Guideline Travels, TripShope Travel Technologies, and Dook Travels.

The company also acquired a 55% stake in hotel booking marketplace cheQin , owned by Gleego Innovations, for around $370,000.

In December 2022, the company acquired a 75% stake in Nutana Aviation Capital for around $185,000. Nutana Aviation Capital leases charter aircraft and provides charter services.

Additionally, the company also boosted its presence in the hotel industry by acquiring a non-controlling stake of around 13% in Eco Hotels and Resorts.

In February, EaseMyTrip announced a joint venture investment of up to INR 1 billion ($12 million) in a five-star hotel project in Ayodhya, in collaboration with Jeewani Hospitality. This move aligned with the company’s strategy to broaden its offerings beyond traditional travel services.

The OTA has also partnered with Indian public sector bank Punjab National Bank to launch a co-branded travel credit card, catering to both mass and premium customer segments.

The company was in news earlier this year after it suspended all flight bookings to Maldives following the #BoycottMaldives movement in India fueled by a diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

Indian Travel Portal Ease My Trip to Acquire Traviate 

Ease My Trip acquires Traviate

The Indian online travel portal Ease My Trip has finalized a non-binding agreement to acquire Traviate , a B2B travel marketplace.    

As BusinessToday reported Thursday (Oct. 28), Ease My Trip says the deal will give its parent company — Easy Trip Planners Limited — access to new travel sector opportunities.  

Founded in 2016, Traviate connects B2B channels, travel agents, hotels and tour operators and other travel world players. The company says its network includes a listing of more than 1.2 million properties and has enabled more than 200,000 transactions to date.  

EaseMyTrip was founded in 2008 by Nishant Pitti and Rikant Pitti and provides deals on flights, hotel stays and vacation packages. The company went public earlier this year with a $72 million initial public offering (IPO).  

The company’s acquisition of Traviate will become final after definitive agreements, customary closing conditions and other approvals are settled.

This announcement comes one day after the hotel payment software startup Selfbook announced a $25 million Series A. The company allows hotels to accept one-click payments on their sites, and supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, along with traditional credit cards and debit cards.  

Selfbook lets guests pay in installments, with the platform’s system integrated with SevenRooms, Mindbody and SynXis to combine charges from a hotel’s restaurants, spas and other activities.

Earlier this month, another player in the Indian travel sector, Oyo, announced it plans to raise $1.16 billion through an IPO.  

The company has said it would use income from the IPO to pay its obligations and fuel growth, potentially through mergers and acquisitions .

Oyo has a turnkey business model: In exchange for room prices and bookings, independent hotel owners get a portion of the revenue and fees they collect, provided they agree to rebrand themselves as an Oyo property.

EaseMyTrip signs agreement to acquire travel B2B marketplace Traviate

The company filed its DRHP for a $72 mn IPO with the market regulator SEBI last year and got listed in March 2021.

Online travel portal, Ease My Trip announced on Thursday that it has signed a non-binding agreement to acquire Traviate Online Private Limited, a travel B2B marketplace. 

Ease My Trip said in a statement that the proposed acquisition would provide Easy Trip Planners Limited -- its parent company -- access to new opportunities in the travel sector. 

This acquisition will be finalised after definitive agreements, customary closing conditions and other necessary approvals. "Upon execution of the definitive agreements, we shall update you along with detailed disclosures required to be submitted pursuant to SEBI Circular dated September 09, 201," the company statement added. 

Traviate, the investee company, was founded in 2016 and allows B2B channels, travel agents, hotels, tour operators, DMCs and other players in the travel ecosystem to connect and transact amongst each other. Traviate claims to build a robust and scalable technology listing more than 1.2 million properties and has enabled more than 2 lakh transactions to date.

Both online travel agencies (OTA), provide visa services for international travel, the travel insurance options for the customers to choose, bus booking services, car rental services, different holiday packages timely, and other travel services. 

EaseMyTrip observed a 91% surge in their operating revenues in 2023 with Rs.449 crores as compared to 2022 revenue of Rs.235.4 crores. 

EaseMyTrip total expenses formed from its employee benefits and marketing & promotional expenses. Its employee benefits expenses contribute a percent of 19% and its marketing & promotional expenses a percent of 29.7%.

MakeMyTrip has observed a 95% increase in its operating revenues in FY23 with Rs. 4,863 crores as compared to FY22 with Rs.2,492 crores. 

MakeMyTrip total expenses are formed from its employee benefit expenses and marketing & promotional expenses. Its employee benefit contributes a percent of 21.7%, whereas its marketing & promotional expenses contribute a percent of 16.7% to total overall expenses. 

How To Get Refund In EaseMyTrip?

There are certain steps followed for the process –

Step 1 – Visit my booking section at the bottom.

Step 2 – Then enter all the necessary details like, PNR number, booking ID, etc. and tap on the refundable flight options.

Step 3 – If you’re the guest user, then check all the flight details and tap on flight cancellation option.

Step 4 – Select the passenger name and select claim a refund option. Within that process state the reason for cancellation and click on the check refund amount option.

Step 5 – Re check all the details and the amount to be refund and click on refund amount option.

Step 6 – Then enter the OTP (One Time Password), you received via message, emails, then click on the ensure flight cancellation option.

How To Get Refund In MakeMyTrip?

During the booking process, just tap on the Zero cancellation fee, by paying additional amount of Rs. 99 per passenger, and enjoy zero penalty charges in case you can cancel your ticket.

For the process of zero cancellation fee, just login to support.makemytrip.com and process the cancellation. Complete the process and the amount paid at the time of booking. Except for the zero cancellation charges paid at the time of booking, all other charges will be refunded .

Do not Recommend Make My Trip for booking the tickets. I had booked round trip from Washington DC to Hyderabad and due to unforeseen reasons cancelled the ticket on November 17, 2023. Till date i had not received the full cancellation amount. They Dilly dally the things and show lame excuses for the delay. Every time you call the customer care, a new person attend the call and seeks 24 to 48 hours for resolution. Without resolution of the complaint they close the complaint. Very unhappy and advice to rethink before using their platform for booking the tickets. AVOID MMT.

OMG! You didn’t receive the refund even after 2 months? So disappointed to see this sort of behaviour for refund from a reputable company. Isn’t there any solution to file a complaint?

Decoding the current travel trends, EaseMyTrip in analysis has revealed that travel sentiment and booking rates are at an all-time high, and travellers are growing more confident to embark on their journeys. The company has witnessed a 40-50 per cent increase in advance air ticket bookings for the upcoming summer peak travel season and the long weekend of Good Friday.
