Virtual Programs
Let us bring Hershey Gardens into your classroom! Our education staff can connect with your students using a live-action application such as Google Meet, or your preferred platform.
The ideal class size is 30 students or less. Virtual field trips are designed to be a part of one class period, about 30 to 40 minutes.
For preschoolers and elementary school students, we offer virtual experiences of a guided customized tour, as well as live virtual adaptations of our most popular in-person school programs: Amazing Butterflies and Green Thumbs.
Amazing Butterflies (offered year round):
Live inside the Butterfly Atrium, students receive a tour of our indoor butterfly habitat, including a visit to the BugZone, where they can learn about some fascinating arthropods, including their anatomy and metamorphosis.
Green Thumbs (offered September through April):
Join us outside for a virtual tour of our “Many Hands Children’s Garden” and observe our horticulturalists at work, with an opportunity for questions and answers. Optional: we can send a classroom pack of supplies to plant a seed in a germination viewing bag and observe the germination process at work. Please indicate this option when scheduling.
Guided Customized Tour (offered year round):
We offer guided customized virtual tours for any classroom. Recent virtual customized tours have included live interviews with our Butterfly Atrium staff as they pin our butterfly chrysalids. Students can also learn about growing and harvesting cacao, which is used to make chocolate.
Virtual programs are $85 for the first class and $70 for each additional class. If you are a part of a financially challenged school district within our commonwealth, please review our requirements for our Share the Gardens Scholarship Fund as your virtual program fees could be reduced or waived.
For more information, or to schedule a visit or distance learning session, please email or call our Education and Public Programs department, 717-508-5968 or email Rebecca Lawrence, Manager of Education and Public Programs at [email protected].
How to Take a Virtual Day-Trip to Hersheypark
The end of what would have been the school year, and the approach of the summer, both bring a new kind of bittersweet feeling this year. The end-of-term field trips that so many kids look forward to aren’t happening, and our own vacation and travels are most likely canceled or postponed. A popular destination in Pennsylvania for class trips and family getaways is Hersheypark ; even if COVID-19 has thwarted your plans to visit this world-class amusement park, you can still take a virtual trip there!
Here’s our guide to “visiting” Hersheypark, even if you can’t be there in person right now:
Of course, nothing can really take the place of racing through space on a roller coaster, with that strange mix of fear, adrenaline and joy shooting through your body. But watching virtual POV videos of Hersheypark’s coasters is still really fun. The park’s YouTube channel is host to over 15 videos that show you a first-person view of various rides and attractions, like the sooperdooperLooper , Lightning Racer and CoalCracker . This could be an especially thrilling watch for children who would normally be too small to be allowed to enjoy these rides.
There’s even a video of the Breaker’s Edge water slide!
There are also tons of POV videos of Hersheypark coasters produced by other companies, like the awesome SkyRush video by Death by Illusion at the top of this feature. A quick search brings up dozens of videos to explore!
After being dazzled by the coaster videos, take the Hershey Entertainment Trivia quiz to see how much you know about Hersheypark Stadium, Hershey Theatre and GIANT Center. Another fun activity for kids is to download Hersheypark’s special coloring pages , featuring cute characters in different scenes from around the park. Share your completed coloring masterpieces to social media with the hashtag #HersheyparkHappy for a chance to be featured!
ZooAmerica is also a favorite feature of visitors at Hershey, and while it’s closed to the public, it is hosting virtual tours to “bring the zoo” to fans everywhere from the comfort of their homes.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. (as of April 13, 2020), ZooAmerica’s Facebook page offers Facebook Live sessions giving animal-lovers the chance to watch, learn and ask questions about the featured animals. If you miss the live session, recordings and extra info from each session are posted. There have been virtual visits with gray wolves , vampire bats, skunks, river otters and many more creatures! As a bonus activity, kids can paint pictures of the animals and share a photo of their art with the ZooAmerica Facebook page.
No trip to Hershey, virtual or otherwise, is complete without a chocolaty treat! For a tasty snack that’s quick and easy (the kids can help, too), melt Hershey’s chocolate chips and dip in some Pennsylvania potato chips or pretzels! Find our recipe here .
If it’s a chilly day, whip up a few mugs of gourmet hot chocolate using Hershey’s cocoa. We’ve got some really cool variations on this classic warm drink, like Special Dark S’more’s Hot Chocolate , Peanutbutter Pretzel Hot Chocolate and (for the grown-ups) PA Red Wine Hot Chocolate !
If you’re craving something savory, Hersheypark has been sharing recipes from Hershey Grille through its blog, like Sweet Italian Sausage Bolognese . Some of the restaurants in Hershey are currently offering takeout; find a list of them here .
And finally, if you can scrape together a few minutes of alone time, try some Hershey-approved self-care, with recipes for DIY face masks and bath soaks, generously shared by The Spa at Hotel Hershey . Follow along on Facebook for more ideas.
Enjoy your virtual trip to Hersheypark! We hope it scratches the itch for adventure, and gets you excited for the next time you can visit this Pennsylvania landmark in person!

Super fun 360° Virtual Factory Tours
The times, they are a-changin’. A month ago, I wrote a post called “10 Screen-free Indoor Activities.” The shelter in place mandate had just taken effect, and I wanted to help parents keep their kids off screens. Now, a month later, we rely on screens to keep us connected to others. We can also use them to take us places we can’t visit in person. Along those lines, I found 15 super fun 360° virtual factory tours for kids of all ages to enjoy.
This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission from products purchased from my links.
360° Virtual Tours
In my post “ Must See Virtual Field Trip s,” I included some 360° virtual tours. If you haven’t tried one before, you need to. Previously, I had only done the tours using a computer. When I started checking out the virtual factory tours, I used my phone to take some tours. I seriously feel like an old dog who just learned a new trick. When I turned around, I saw different parts of the factory. Very cool indeed. Make sure to press the pause button during the tours so you can look around.
Factory Tours
Why did I choose factory tours? My family loves to know how things are made. One morning when all 10 of us were at the table, we took turns looking up on You Tube “how things are made.” Of course, I chose chocolate. A note on the 360° tours, most of them are only a few minutes long. You of course have the option to pause and “look” around and explore.
Non-food 360° Tours
I can’t lie, I find the food tours the most interesting. Since not everyone is like me, however, I chose other tours as well.
1. Amazon – A lady with a lovely accent is your guide on this tour of an Amazon wherehouse. It’s an impressive operation.
2. Boeing – On this tour, you will explore Boeing’s factory in Renton, Washington. They make their 737 plane here. Would you believe it takes 12,000 workers to make 47 planes in a month?
3. Toyota – Here you will see workers making Toyota forklifts. This factory is located in Ancenis, France. Parts of this tour go by really quickly, so if you want to explore more, pause and move around.
4. Tesla – The editor-in-chief of Roadshow, Tim Stevens, is the tour guide for Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California.
5. M factory – Walmart produced this video to show viewers how the M factory makes eyeglasses in Brooklyn, New York. There is no narrator for this tour, but pop-ups along the way explain the process.
6. Standard Textile Center for Advanced Manufacturing – This plant provides made in the USA products for Marriot Hotels. The narrator will take you through the process of making terry cloth towels at their factory.
7. Gotham Greens Urban Rooftop Garden – The CEO of Gotham Greens takes you behind the scenes at their rooftop garden in Brooklyn, New York. They grow all kinds of leafy greens in their facility.
Food 360° Factory Tours
Now it’s on to the food! The Food Network has a number of videos that are more “how it’s made” than factory tours. Those videos are from the network’s “Unwrapped” series. The first tour is not a Food Network tour, but one I have personally been on as it’s close to home.
8. The Jelly Belly Factory – Did you know Ronald Reagan was a huge jelly bean fan? At the factory, there is a huge portrait of Reagan made of jelly beans. This facility is located in Fairfield, California.
9. Ample Hills Creamery – Brian Smith, the co-founder of Ample Hills Creamery in Brooklyn, New York, shows us how to make “ooey gooey butter cake ice cream.” Is your mouth drooling yet?
10. Smarties Candy Company – Take a quick tour to see how Smarties are made. Over a billion rolls of Smarties are made each year!
11. M & Ms – M & Ms have been made in New Jersey since 1941. And yes, I am playing favorites by embedding this video. After all, it involves chocolate.
12. Peeps – Peeps are made in Pennsylvania. 5.5 million Peeps are made every day! Peeps are polarizing. There is a Facebook group dedicated to disliking Peeps. I think Peeps are great for science experiments.
13. New York City Pizzerias – This is a quick compilation of three pizzerias making New York style pizza. I liked that I could pause and look up at the people who were making the pizzas.
14. Pez – Visit the Pez factory in Connecticut. Watch how they make the six different flavored candies that go in the fun dispensers. Do you have a favorite dispenser?
In a class by itself
15. Lego factory – Time to geek out Lego fans! This is a tour of the Lego factory in Denmark. Here is a crazy statistic: the factory makes 1,350 Lego pieces every second!
Have fun exploring these super fun 360° virtual factory tours!

These two medium-sized cats have shared the space since October 2019 and have been getting along quite well! Lynx have many unique physical features, including their big paws that act as snowshoes so they can easily walk on top of the snow in the wild.
Virtual Visit with a Skunk
In this Facebook Live, Stella the skunk will paint on a canvas using nontoxic paint as part of the Zoo's enrichment and training program. Some of her paintings are available for sale in the ZooAmerica gift shop when it's open. Stella is one of four striped skunks in the Education Department at ZooAmerica . She is 6 years old and weighs about three pounds.
BONUS ACTIVITY : As a fun activity, ask your kids to paint their own pictures and post a photo to the ZooAmerica Facebook page.
Virtual Visit with River Otters
ZooAmerica is home to two river otters that live in a special habitat in the Eastern Woodlands region of the Zoo. In this video, viewers will meet Iris, a 7-year-old river otter who arrived at ZooAmerica in November 2019 from another zoo in Indiana. In the wild, river otters span a wide range. They are carnivores and eat mainly aquatic animals, such as fish, crayfish, crabs and other invertebrates. Their favorite snack at ZooAmerica is a fish called capelin.
Virtual Visit with Reptiles
Three reptile species are the stars of the show in this next Facebook Live. Viewers will be introduced to Houdini the Iguana (6 years old), Zorro the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake (5 years old), and Huey, Dewey and Lewey the Desert Tortoises (2 years old).

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic
The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.
The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.
The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.
For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
