ETIAS Spain from Canada

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) for Spain will be introduced in 2025. After it comes into effect, Canadian travellers will need to obtain an ETIAS visa waiver before going to Spain or any other country in the Schengen Area.

This visa waiver for Spain and Europe is being introduced to strengthen the border security of the region and streamline the immigration process for foreign travellers.

ETIAS will identify and prevent people who pose a security risk from entering the Schengen Area and Spain from Canada. In short, ETIAS will make travelling to Europe safer for visitors and European citizens alike.

To apply for the ETIAS to Spain , Canadians will need to complete the online application form , which only takes a few minutes.

Do Canadians need a visa for Spain?

No, Canadians can visit Spain and the Schengen Area visa-free for short-term stays, and that is not going to change in the foreseeable future.

ETIAS will not affect the visa status of Canadians. It will simply confirm the eligibility of travellers to enter the Schengen Area without a visa.

Please note that Canadians are allowed into Spain visa-free only for business, leisure, or transit and for relatively short periods of time.

Should visitors from Canada wish to remain in Spain for longer and for other reasons like study or employment , they will need a relevant Spanish visa from an embassy or consulate. The same will be true after ETIAS is implemented.

Canadian travellers who need to get a visa for their trip should consult Spain’s visa policy to help decide which type of travel permit they need . For example, those intending to carry out paid work will likely need a work permit, while students will need a study visa.

Can Canadian citizens travel to Spain?

Yes , Canadian citizens can go to Spain with the relevant travel documents. Canadians will be able to go on vacation or travel for business or transit with a valid ETIAS for Spain permit .

During the permitted 90 days, Canadian citizens can remain in Spain or visit any of the other ETIAS countries.

Canadians will need to obtain the ETIAS before departure. Although ETIAS is not a visa for Spain, it will become mandatory for entry to Spain from Canada .

How can Canadians apply for ETIAS to visit Spain?

To complete the ETIAS application for Spain , Canadians will need to:

• Supply personal information such as name, address, date of birth
• Answer some security-related questions
• Fill out passport details
• Make a payment using a credit or debit card

All the information provided by Canadian applicants for Spain ETIAS will be cross-checked against various security databases such as Europol and Interpol. The vast majority of applications will be quickly approved.

Passport and document requirements for an Spain ETIAS from Canada

To successfully apply for ETIAS, it will be necessary to have a Canadian passport valid for at least 3 months past the intended departure date from Spain . There will be a section of the form where applicants will enter their Canadian passport number, expiry date, and nationality, etc.

• If a Canadian ETIAS-holder’s passport expires , the visa waiver does too (regardless of how long the visa waiver has before expiry)
• Travellers from Canada cannot transfer the visa waiver between passports so it will be necessary to reapply for a new Spain ETIAS in these cases
• Canadian applicants with more than one passport need to use the same one for the application and for entering Spain

Travelling to Spain from Canada with an ETIAS

After an application has been submitted and approved, the ETIAS Spain tourist visa waiver will be sent to applicants by email . Canadians will be able to travel to Spain by presenting their ETIAS visa waiver to the border authorities (along with a corresponding passport).

There are no hard borders between the Schengen countries. This means visitors can move freely within the region without going through any passport controls. An ETIAS visa waiver is valid for 3-year durations and allows Canadians to spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area (within any 180-day period).

Canadian travel to Spain was affected during the coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying entry restrictions. However, as you can see below, the number of Canadian tourists visiting the country was firmly on the rise before COVID-19, and is expected to recover quickly.

Spanish Embassies in Canada

The main Spanish embassy in Canada is located in Ottawa, the capital city. Elsewhere there are 7 consulates in various cities including Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto.

Canadians can currently enter Spain with only their passports for periods of up to 90 days . However, for working, studying or living, it is necessary to obtain a relevant visa from a Spanish embassy or consulate.

Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

Biometrics and the application process

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics).You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

• You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
• Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
• You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

• have a valid travel document, like a passport
• be in good health
• have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
• convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
• convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
• The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

• criminal activity
• human rights violations
• organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Biometrics fee

• Individual  applicant: CAD $85
• Families applying at the same time : maximum total fee of CAD $170
• Groups of 3 or more performing artists and their staff  who apply for work permits at the same time: maximum total fee of $CAD 255

Once you have read the guide, you can prepare your application package. You must select the country or territory from which you will apply to get your local visa office instructions.

Permanent residents of Canada

We do not issue temporary resident visas (TRV) to permanent residents (PR). If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) instead. If you meet the requirements for a PRTD, you can return to Canada as a PR.

If you no longer want to be a PR, or if you know you do not meet the requirements to keep your PR status, you can voluntarily give up (renounce) your PR status to apply for a TRV.

Application for Temporary Resident Visa

You can’t fill out and save the application form using your Internet browser. To use the form, you need to:

• Use your computer (Mac or PC). The form won’t open on mobile devices (iPads, tablets, mobile phones, etc.)
• Install Adobe Reader 10 (or higher)
• Download the PDF file to your computer . Save the file in a place you can remember.
• Make sure you use Adobe Reader to open the form. Sometimes if you try to open the form directly, it will use your Internet browser to try to open it.

First Steps Upon Arrival in Spain

Foreigner’s Identity Card ( TIE / NIE )

You are required to apply for a foreigner’s Identity Card or number within 30 days upon arrival in Spain at the local foreigners’ office or police stations. You’ll need this number to do administratively, like open an account, get paid, file taxes, buy a house, or acquire a driver’s license.

How to Apply for a Spanish Driver’s License

You, as a Canadian, need to get a Spanish driver’s license no later than six months after establishing residency in the country. You can use your Canadian license for up to six months before expiration. Six months later, you’ll have to enroll in driver’s ed and take the written and behind-the-wheel exams. After the initial 10-year period, license renewals are only required every 5 years.

Spanish Bank Account Opening

It is more convenient to open a resident bank account as a Canadian living continuously in Spain. You’ll need your passport, Foreigner’s ID, evidence of domicile, proof of employment, and verification of your social security number to create a bank account. Bankia, BBVA, La Caixa, and Santander are Spain’s Big Four banks.

Spanish medical care

Health care in Spain is among the best in Europe, and it’s free of charge. Nonetheless, visits to the dentist, rides in an ambulance or prescription drugs are not covered.

Several standards must be met for a Canadian living in Spain to be eligible for free healthcare.

• Anyone who contributes to the Social Security system, whether they are employed or self-employed
• A Spanish resident who receives government assistance
• A student under the age of 26 who is currently enrolled in a Spanish university
• Have an EHIC card and are visiting Spain

Steps After Moving to Spain as A Canadian

Canadians are welcome to visit Spain once they have applied for and received their visa. They must apply for a foreign ID and social security registration upon arrival. All foreign nationals visiting Spain for whatever reason, be it business, work, or pleasure, are required to obtain a foreigner identity number.

An N.I.E. application needs to be submitted to the Consular Post serving the applicant’s area of residence. Information on the international applicant and relevant background information will be included in the application.

When Canadians move to Spain and stay for ten years, they are eligible to petition for citizenship. The waiting time for an application is shortened to one year when a Canadian citizen has married a Spanish national for at least a year.

Can Canadians move to Spain?

Canadians can move to Spain from Canada without a visa if they will be in Spain for less than 90 days . However, they do have to apply for a residence permit to live in Spain for more than 90 days. The procedure is fairly straightforward, and the application can be made by mail or online through the Spanish consulate website. Approval of your application takes about four months; however, it can take up to six months.

The cost of applying for a residence permit varies depending on whether you choose an online process or one that requires sending your documents by post.

Is it better to live in Spain or Canada?

Canada and Spain share several commonalities, like stunning landscapes, warm and welcoming people, and high-quality medical treatment. However, the lower cost in Spain, the availability of healthier food, and the warmer environment may appeal to Canadians eager to escape the cold.

In Spain , The average cost of living is 59% lower than in Canada. The most significant price discrepancies are for housing, food, alcohol, and child care, with gym memberships and electricity bills being quite similar.

How long can I live in Spain as a Canadian?

Visa requirements and duration of stay limits vary. A Canadian visitor to Spain can only stay for a maximum of 90 days without a visa. This period will extend to ninety days before they can return. You’ll need a special long-stay Visa if your visit lasts more than ninety days.

A foreign identity card and social security registration will be compulsory for all new arrivals to Spain. Please visit your nearest Consular Post to apply for your N.I.E. number (foreigner’s identification number). The 10-year residency requirement for applying for Spanish citizenship is reduced to 1-year if you are married to a Spanish native for at least that long.

Family Members

Additional monthly income equal to 100% of the IPREM, or €600, is required for each dependent child. Each responsible family member is entitled to receive the full IPREM benefit each month, which in 2022 amounts to €600 (or the legal equivalent in foreign currency).

There is no requirement for having a job before relocating to Spain. That much is certain. However, you will still need to apply for any residency programme that does not specifically require it.

Take care: Spain uses higher voltage than Canada

Your electric devices from Canada will be expecting 120 Volts, but Spain grid is of 220 Volts, this is a substantial difference that requires you to take some extra steps in preparation to your trip:

On the positive side , nowadays many devices will switch automatically to the network voltage and they will work just fine, i.e. mobile phone chargers are typically multi-voltage (but please, do actually check your own). It is important that you pay attention to your device's voltage. Connecting electronics to the wrong voltage, in the luckiest of the cases, the device will break or stop working temporarily; but please don't take this lightly , in the worst of the cases electrocution and fire hazards are a real possibility .

High-power devices don't usually handle different voltages due to the high-currents involved i.e. anything that its main purpose involves generating heat (or cold) like hair driers, baby bottle warmers, kettles, etc. On the contrary, modern low-power devices are likely to auto-detect and auto-adapt to different voltages i.e. usb chargers, laptop chargers, etc.

You will need a step down voltage converter a device that can be plugged to 220 volts and it provides an outlet with 120 volts for your Canada' device. You will need to pay attention to the maximum power output of the converter and the maximum power consumption of the device.

A good and solid adapter with earth connection pass-though; because of its construction, it has a good solid grip; On the negative side, two blades plugs are usually 110v, but the two rounded terminals are typically 220v, so please check your device to be sure they will be able to handle the correct voltage when using this adapter.

The pain in Spain: Where are Brits not so welcome this summer?

Tourists are facing a backlash from residents in Tenerife as islanders say they are struggling to cope with the influx of visitors, ITV News Europe Editor James Mates reports

Spain is one of the most popular destinations for British tourists, but the country is feeling the backlash of the cheap flights and sunny climes as large numbers of visitors are causing big problems.

A number of provinces have taken matters into their own hands and are providing guidance - and in some case strict rules - for tourists visiting over the summer, as they try and tackle overcrowding and the problems that come with it.

Tourism represents nearly 12% of Spain’s economy but there has been growing pressure from locals for governments to put measures in place to reduce the number of visitors.

So which parts of Spain might not be so keen for Brits to descend this summer?

Canary Islands

Protestors in Tenerife started a hunger strike on April 12 as part of a wider campaign demanding the Canary Islands government tackle the effects of excess tourism in the region.

Hundreds of people linked arms to form a human chain to demonstrate against the building of an additional hotel and beach resort, as well as future projects aimed at attracting more tourists. The hunger strike was still underway on Wednesday at the time of writing.

The wider movement is called Canarias Se Agota, which means 'The Canaries Have Had Enough'.

In an Instagram post the organisation said the Canary Islands are "exhausted" because of the "excessive tourism" and the "lack of attention to the basic needs of the population".

Last year the then-mayor of Barcelona described tourism as a "great challenge" for the city, and suggested there needed to be a way to limit the number of people pouring in during holiday season.

Ada Colau limited the number of hotel beds in the city during her tenure, highlighting that the city needs homes so there is space for residents to live in the busy centre.

Her successor, Jaume Collboni, banned cruise ships from docking at the Muelle Barcelona Norte and the World Trade Centre docks, a mile away from the Gothic quarter, in October.

Now cruises must dock at the Moll d’Adossat pier, which is a 30-minute bus ride from the historic centre.

Meanwhile one neighbourhood went as far as to get a local bus route removed from Google and Apple Maps to discourage tourists from using it as it was often too busy for residents to fit onboard.

“We laughed at the idea at first,” a local activist, César Sánchez, told the Guardian. “But we’re amazed that the measure has been so effective.”

Wider Catalonia region

Barcelona is the largest city in the Catalonia region, but authorities for the entire area are considering imposing water restrictions on tourists if domestic consumption does not decrease.

The Catalan government is considering a restriction of 100 litres of water per day per tourist for hotels for three months as it looks to tackle drought in the area.

According to Barcelona’s hotel guild, the average tourist to Barcelona in 2022 used some 163 litres per day, while the figure rose to over 240 litres for luxury hotels.

The limits for tourists would not include the water used to fill swimming pools.

Majorca has introduced a series of new rules over the last couple of years that aren't explicitly preventing tourists from enjoying the island, but do seek to weed out "drunken tourism".

A number of restaurants banned shirtless, costumed or football-shirt-wearing travellers, according to Juan Miguel Ferrer, the chief executive of Palma Beach.

Swimwear, trunks and novelty accessories bought from roadside vendors - such as gold chains - are also said to be banned.

"Since May 10, we’ve been suffering the arrival of large groups of tourists who are only looking to get drunk in the streets, or on the seafront or even on the beach,” Mr Ferrer said in 2022.

“You’re not going to come here in beach clothes or come straight from drinking in the streets."

Alicante introduced new noise-related restrictions in 2023 in response to influxes of tourists causing disruption for locals.

Rules had originally been put in place in 2019, but they were strengthened last year. The array of noises encompassed by the regulations include open air concerts, use of musical instruments on beaches, and shouting.

The local city council warned of hefty fines for anybody flouting the rules.

Money matters and passport pains

Post-Brexit, Brits are subject to the 'third states' rules Spain imposes on visitors from outside the European Union.

A traveller visiting Spain must "present proof of having sufficient financial means for the proposed stay", or at least the ability to legally obtain that money, according to the Spanish foreign ministry.

In 2023, the minimum amount required was $120 (£97) per person per day, and the traveller had to have at least $1100 (£885) or its equivalent in foreign currency regardless of the length of the stay.

Travellers can show they have enough money by presenting cash, travellers' cheques, a credit card with a bank account statement, an up-to-date bank book or similar. The ministry states that bank letters or online bank statements are not accepted.

Brits flying abroad are also being warned about post-Brexit passport rules , which have landed travellers with hefty fines.

Some families are finding themselves thousands of pounds out of pocket when they have been banned from boarding flights due to the rule changes.

When the UK was a member of the EU, British passports remained valid up to and including their expiry date for travel to other EU countries, but now passports need to be valid for valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting.
