Mind, body, spirit: my wellness journey in India

Group of travellers doing yoga

It was my first time visiting India and, honestly, I was a little bit nervous.

I’d heard stories about how overwhelming and hectic it can be (especially as a young female travelling alone), so I made the strategic decision to start in Bangalore, in the south of the country, as I’d heard it wasn’t as full on as Delhi. Luckily, I’d found the perfect trip that started in Bangalore, which meant I could avoid the madness of Delhi airport altogether. But most importantly, I was excited about the Ayurvedic focus of this itinerary, with plenty of mindfulness, yoga and wellness activities packed in.

READ MORE: WHAT TO EXPECT ON A WELLNESS TRIP IN INDIA

I was about to head off on a 9-day India: Mind, Body, Spirit trip . Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that has its origins in India and would be informing a lot of the experiences and activities on our itinerary. An Ayurvedic lifestyle looks at overall health and wellness as a fine balance between mind, body and spirit, so despite being over 3,000 years old seems to be more relevant than ever in today’s crazy world!

Female travellers eating on the floor in Goa

Sharing a meal is always a good bonding experience. Image by Ben McNamara.

On the first day of the tour when I met my local leader Usha (who I learned was Intrepid’s first ever female leader in south India!) and the other four women in my group, I knew immediately the trip was going to be amazing.

SEE INDIA FOR YOURSELF, ON A SMALL GROUP TOUR WITH INTREPID

I have done other group trips before as a solo traveller and sometimes it can take a while to bond with the other people in the group, but on this trip it was instantly apparent that our mindsets was our common ground, despite differences in our age and background. What we had in common was that we all wanted to go on a personal journey that gave us an instant connection on a much deeper level than a normal travel group.

After Bangalore, our first stop was an ashram in Mysore where we met a yoga guru named as Jai. He was everything I had always pictured a yoga guru to be – mid to late 20s with a man-bun (all the ladies loved him!) and his energy was just so calm. As soon as you were in his presence you felt better.

Funnily enough, we were all quite intimidated going in to this first yoga session, because we thought everyone else would be really advanced. There was one lady in her late 50s from Canada in our group who was trained in reiki (a Japanese relaxation treatment used for stress reduction) and was a lifelong hippie, so was practiced with mindfulness but not so much with yoga. And there was another Australian girl in her 30s who was very fit, but didn’t have much experience with meditation. And the rest hadn’t really done much yoga before. It was really nice to be able to learn together but also from each other’s experiences.

One other concern I had before the trip was what to wear for the yoga sessions, but I didn’t need to worry. As long as your knees and shoulders were covered, it was fine and everyone we met was understanding of Western yoga attire, so our tight yoga leggings weren’t an issue.

Next, we went to Wayanad, which is a really beautiful mountainous part of Southern Indian with tea plantations and wild elephants. Here, we met an Ayurvedic doctor called Baba who taught us about how Ayurveda is so engrained in the society and culture in that part of India – for example, if you get sick you would use Ayurvedic remedies as a first point of call, rather than going to a doctor.

That night our accommodation was dorm style, which was really fun all bunking in together. We had a campfire in the evening and then got up early and did a meditation class the next morning and it was a real bonding experience, especially considering we were all solo travellers.

Our next stop was Thrissur, which was probably the highlight of the whole trip for me. We were staying at a proper Ayurvedic retreat, which was a haven of lush grass, yoga nooks and pathways, just tucked away off a little backstreet. Aside from the yoga, one of the more memorable moments at the retreat has to be the Ayurvedic massages we got.

None of us were expecting it to be as full on as it was – it’s definitely not like a Western massage where there is a lot more privacy. It was a full body oil massage with TWO ladies massaging you! In an Ayurvedic massage they drip warm oil on your forehead out of a barrel, the idea being that it drips on to your third eye and it balances and purifies your chakras. The oil is meant to be so good for you that they tell you not to shower for about half an hour afterwards, so your body can absorb all the nutrients in it. Once I let my guard down it was a really good massage and experience.

When we got to our next destination, Kochi, we attended a Kathakali performance and it was quite the experience! Kathakali is a type of traditional Indian theatre that has been going for hundreds of years – the actors get dressed up and do their makeup on stage for the hour beforehand, so you can see how they get ready, which is cool to watch. They act with their eyeballs and hand movements, but no talking. Luckily, we had a guy explain to us what the different movements meant in English before the show started. The show we saw was one hour long, but the traditional performances go for about 13 hours – the actors don’t even break to sleep! There was lots of running around and it was very theatrical like Bollywood but in a stage play. It was honestly really weird but a very cool experience.

The next day, after a morning exploring Kochi’s seaside markets and meeting some of the local fishermen (we even helped reel in a fish!), we headed to a lunchtime cooking class. We all had our own hot plates and were given pre-chopped ingredients, like on a cooking show, to cook a full vegetarian menu. The teacher took us through some basic Ayurvedic teachings for how you should eat based on your personal needs and gave us great alternatives. For me, I try to avoid spicy foods, so she gave me alternatives, so I could cook without chilli.

Spicy food overall was something I was worried about before going to India, but I shouldn’t have been! Everywhere we stayed, the food was cooked for us – it was mainly vegetarian curries (although sometimes there was chicken) and different breads like naans and chapatis, as well as endless amounts of chai tea and desserts. We were really well catered for, especially those of us with dietary requirements. As someone with zero spice tolerance, I felt very well looked after.

This trip opened up my mind to the world of Ayurveda and there are so many little things that I have taken away from this trip that I will apply to my everyday Western city lifestyle back home. Being present and actively using each of our five senses during activities like yoga or eating a meal seem like small changes to make but the actual difference you will feel is endless and will be a lifelong journey for me.

Ministry of Tourism has formulated a National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism to boost Medical Tourism

Ministry of Tourism in order to boost Medical Tourism in the country, has formulated a National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism. The Strategy has identified the following key pillars:

(i)   Develop a brand for India as a wellness destination

(ii)  Strengthen the ecosystem for medical and wellness tourism

(iii)  Enable digitalization by setting up Online Medical Value Travel (MVT) Portal

(iv)  Enhancement of accessibility for Medical Value Travel

(v)   Promoting Wellness Tourism

(vi)  Governance and Institutional Framework

However, as part of its on-going activities, Ministry of Tourism, releases global print, electronic and online media campaigns in important and potential markets overseas, under the ‘Incredible India’ brand-line, to promote various tourism destinations and products of the country. Digital promotions are also regularly undertaken through the Social Media accounts of the Ministry on different themes including the theme of Medical Tourism.

The Government of India liberalized the e-Tourist Visa Scheme pursuant to the cabinet approval on 30.11.2016 and the e-Tourist Visa (eTV) scheme was renamed to e-visa Scheme and, at present, it has e-medical Visa and e-Medical Attendant Visa as sub-categories of e-visa.

In the case of e-Medical Visa and for e-Medical Attendant Visa, triple entry is permitted and extension may be granted up to 6 months on case to case basis on merits of each case by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRRO)/Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) concerned. Medical Attendant Visa was co-terminus with the validity of the principal e-visa holder.

Further, Union Ministry of Health is coordinating with other Ministries and stakeholders viz. Hospitals, Medical Value Travel (MVT) facilitators, Insurance Companies, NABH etc. to promote medical value travel in the country.

This reply was given by Minister of Culture, Tourism and Development of North Eastern Region Shri G. Kishan Reddy in Lok Sabha today.

National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism

Gs paper 2/3.

Syllabus: Government policies/Issues Relating to Health/Economy

Source: PIB

Context: With an aim to improve medical tourism in the country, the Ministry of Tourism has formulated a National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism (2022).

Background: India has been ranked 10th in the Medical Tourism Index (MTI) for 2020-2021 out of 46 destinations in the world by the Medical Tourism Association.

Medical vs wellness tourism:

  • Medical tourism (valued at $60-80 billion globally) primarily addresses the “ poor health ” end of the market, with patients travelling to another place for specific medical treatments.
  • Wellness tourism (~$639 billion), on the other hand, attracts those seeking destinations that extend their wellness lifestyle and help them proactively maintain and improve their health and well-being.
  • As far as medical tourism is concerned, India currently has a $5-6 billion market (2019 figure) that may rise to $13 billion by 2026.

wellness tourism in india

Govt. efforts to boost the medical tourism sector in India:

Streamlining Medical Value Travel (MVT) : A segment that attracted 0.7 million foreign tourists in pre-pandemic 2019.

  • MVT is a specialised service by Hospitals and Wellness centres including both modern as well as traditional systems of medicine.
  • It involves healthcare service providers, VISA requirements, insurance, MVT facilitators, etc.

National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism (2022): Key pillars for the development of MVT in the country:

  • Develop a brand for India as a wellness destination
  • Strengthen the ecosystem for medical and wellness tourism
  • Enable digitalization by setting up an Online Medical Value Travel (MVT) Portal
  • Enhancement of accessibility for Medical Value Travel
  • Promoting Wellness Tourism
  • Governance and Institutional Framework

Heal in India Initiative: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Ayush have been working with C-DAC and the Services Export Promotion Council for developing a One Step Heal in India portal for the Promotion of MVT.

Champion Service Sector Scheme: The Ministry of Ayush developed a Central Sector Scheme for MVT to incentivise private investors for the establishment of Super Specialty Hospitals, etc.

e-Tourist Visa scheme: It was liberalised and renamed as an e-Visa scheme and at present, it has e-Medical Visa and e-Medical Attendant Visa as sub-categories of e-visa.

National Medical & Wellness Tourism Board (NMWTB): The Ministry of Tourism constituted the Board in 2015 to provide a dedicated institutional framework to take forward the cause of promotion of Medical and Wellness Tourism.

Publication date: 22 August 2022

The chapter aims to empirically explore trends and issues concerning Indian wellness services being taken internationally for commercial use by wellness service providers and tourists. The text also highlights how their authenticity gets compromised in place of profitability. The enquiry is approached through a conceptual framework of wellness tourism and subsequent tourism concerns. While scholars have recently turned their attention to tourism challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the perspective of digitalization within tourism can help to nuance this area of concern. Some recommendations for the Indian wellness tourism sector include digital solutions, screen-induced tourism, measures towards tourists' safety, regulations concerning certifications and targeting new client segments. Furthermore, raising greater awareness about the philosophical backdrop of Indian wellness services amongst international tourists would contribute to practice and theory while resurrecting the wellness tourism industry in India.

The Observer view on overtourism: sometimes, the planet’s hotspots are best left unvisited

From Everest to Machu Picchu, we can’t get enough of those ‘must-see’ places. It’s time to show some restraint

Climbing Everest used to be an even more dangerous pursuit than it is today, requiring huge bravery, endurance and skill. Even then the mountain could kill. A century ago, it claimed the lives of two of Britain’s finest climbers, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine.

The world’s highest mountain eventually succumbed to human challenge when, almost three decades later, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay carried the flags of Britain, the UN, and Nepal to its summit on 29 May 1953. Sporadic trips involving handfuls of explorers continued over succeeding years.

But the slopes of Everest have been transformed in recent years. Its peaks and ridges are now regularly flooded with tourists vying to reach its 29,032ft (8,849 metre) summit. In 2023, more than 1,200 people – paying fees of around £40,000 a head – attempted the feat. Of these, more than 600 succeeded. A place once synonymous with remote, unsullied grandeur has become a high-end tourist trap, leaving its once pristine slopes littered with tattered tents, abandoned gear and human waste. Everest tourism may generate hundreds of millions of pounds for Nepal, but this comes at a heavy cost.

Overtourism is not confined to the Himalayas. Last week, Venice became the world’s first city to introduce an entry fee , a €5 day-trip ticket that each of the 30 million sightseers who visit every year will have to buy to gain access to St Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge and its other wonders. Tourists may be happy to contribute to the city’s upkeep but many locals see the move as a step towards the transformation of Venice into a Veniceland, a Disneylike simulacrum.

Hosts of other sites face similar problems – from Dubrovnik to Yellowstone and from Machu Picchu to Cornwall. Maya Bay in Thailand was closed for four years after waves of tourists – who arrived after seeing it in the Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Beach – began wrecking its coral reefs . Iceland imposed temporary closures of Fjaðrárgljúfur, a canyon popularised in Justin Bieber’s 2015 music video, “I’ll Show You”, after it triggered an abrupt and damaging influx of visitors .

The causes of overtourism – the arrival of too many sightseers in one place at the same time – are complex. Elements include: the huge growth of the middle classes in India and China; cheap airfares; and the rise of social media, which has created a generation obsessed with taking selfies in front of great works of art or architecture. This last factor has forced the Louvre to consider moving the Mona Lisa to its own room where visitors can pose more freely in front of the world’s most famous painting.

In many ways, such interest should be welcomed. Visiting other countries brings benefits. Travellers learn about other cultures and create powerful, lasting memories of their times there. Unfortunately, the price is becoming hard to pay. Overtourism now threatens to destroy pristine wildlife areas and precious historical sites, the very features that attract tourists in the first place. Studies indicate that 80% of travellers now visit only 10% of the world’s tourist destinations. This concentration reveals a dangerous skew in priorities.

after newsletter promotion

The warning signs are clear and alarming. The solutions, sadly, are less obvious. Stricter controls of cruise ships that can suddenly drop vast numbers of passengers in fragile locations is an option. Imposing city taxes like Venice’s is another. Properly assessing the economic value of our environment would also help assess the damages. At the same time, tourists themselves need to show restraint and occasionally consider local as opposed to distant attractions. Our planet houses many marvels. Care needs to be taken in opening up their wonder.
