Always Grumpy, except when at Disney!

Just wondering if anyone has had any success. We were planning on a Christmas trip but just looked at the prices...almost $6K for 4 people! No way I am spending that just on flights. Don't want to waste hours on hold on the phone if it is going to be futile.

Simple solution - book flights, any flights, then cancel them. It re-sets your expiring travel bank dollars to start again the day you cancel. Simpler solution - use WestJet's increasingly efficient Call-Back option. I've been getting call-backs offered within 15 minutes of me requesting. A couple of months back, a call-back was a 3-4 day wait.

They've closed the loophole of cancelling flight and re-booking it now or so I've heard. My sister in law was able to call and get them to extend her credits to summer 2023 for a small fee I believe (~25 dollars) but I suppose your mileage may vary there? Wouldn't hurt to ask (if you can get through...).

I had four lounge passes converted from a 2020 companion flight that are set to expire Feb 28,2022. I asked if they would extend it for another month since we are going to Hawaii in March but was told no way they would do that.

Westjet credit soon to expire

By Sue from Canada , December 3, 2021 in Canadian Cruisers

I have a credit (due to a cancelled cruise in 2020) and have to book a flight by this March.  I don't plan on flying anywhere right now.  I've called WJ to request a refund to my credit card and they said no.  Has anyone else been in this situation?

Option:  Book a flight and then cancel it.  Would I get a credit again with a longer expiry date?  Don't  advise me to call WJ - they don't answer their phones.

I think you have to book by March but for something in the future?  Do you think you could use the credit for a cruise later next year?

I doubt if you booked & cancelled they would give you credit again.

We have a companion ticket to book before the end of the year or lose it but like you, we just don’t feel comfortable booking anything yet.

Did you cancel the flights or did Westjet cancel them?  You might want to join the Air Passenger Rights (Canada) FB group.  They have ‘experts’ who have been providing information on how to deal with Canadian airlines in these sorts of situations.

If your fare is not a basic fare from westjet you can book and cancel how many times you want up to 48 hours before as long as you book before the end of december.... I booked and cancel 2 flights and rebook one and each time my date got pushed further out.....

Is it a standard WJ travel bank amount or a specific credit with WJ vacations?  If it’s travel bank there’s an option to pay a few bucks to get an extension on your expiry date…

we're in the same boat with Swoop credits. Ours state they have to be USED by Jun 2022 and we don't see an opportunity to use them by then. I assumed that meant we had to fly by June 2022 but maybe just have something booked. Was wondering about the booking and then cancelling to get an extension as well.

I just did online chat with swoop about using credits and this is what I got back - so I think we can book before expiry for a flight later than expiry - so that helps some.

Credits have a validity period of 24 months but travel dates can extend beyond the 24-month window.

They cannot legally hold your money or deny you a refund - contact your credit card company and request a chargeback to get your $$ back!

I think it may be too late for a chargeback plus if accepted the credit I don’t think they’ll do it.  But some Provinces you may be covered by the Consumer Protection-maybe check that out?

We did the chargeback only because WJ changed our flights & were told outright we would not accept a credit, wanted a refund per the APPR  17(2) and 17(7). Our M/C accepted this and we did the chargeback within 2 weeks.

No idea about the contract of carriage restrictions. But I do know that credit cards generally have a time limit for contesting a charge. In my experience around 90 days.

I cancelled the flight since HAL cancelled the 2020 cruise to Alaska.

Yes, it's a WJ travel bank amount.  I didn't know about an extension for a few extra bucks.  I honestly don't fly WJ that often as we have such crappy flights out of Ottawa and nothing direct. Plus, I prefer Air Canada's business class.

Really.  Well then Air Canada also owes me a refund for two flights I just cancelled.  I've got some phone calling to do this weekend.  Thanks

An option have with Swoop is to book and purchase " modifly " for $10 which would then allow me to cancel (and extend) for a small charge. Still hoping to avoid that but it is a route we may take with Swoop. There is likely something similar with Westjet , although not sure how much they would charge to make the booking flexible

Go to the website and request a callback from WJ

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/contact/phone/request-call-back

Then you should be able to pay to extend the travel bank expiry.  Your use length seems really short, so they may be extending them already, or be about to.  If not, I think it’s about $25 to extend?

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/help/travel-credits?searchPage=s-searchPage

Extending might be better than losing them entirely.  You can also buy flights for other people, so maybe a friend or family member has a trip they could use them for and then they could give you the cash?

We were in a similar situation at the end of 2019, just before Covid hit and closed the world to traveling.  We had accepted an offer from Air Transat employees at Gatwick airport to give up our seats on a flight that was overbooked.  They flew us and twenty others to Glasgow to catch another Air Transat flight the following day.  They gave us vouchers worth 700 British pounds each and the voucher had an expiry date for booking of April in 2020.  As we all know now, air travel was still non existent at that time and has only started to come back.  In our case, we had until April of 2020 to make a booking but travel could be any time after that.  As I didn't see any way that we were going to be able to take advantage of our vouchers, I wrote (a letter and stamp, not an e-mail or phone call) a letter to the president of the company, asking for an extension of the booking deadline.  I had to write twice in a matter of months as I had not received any answer and planes were still not flying.  My persistence paid off and my husband and I received a new booking window of March of this year.  We used that to book our flights for 2022 and as of this writing, with new Covid variants popping up, we still hope to be able to make good our plans to travel next year.

We've had travel bank credits with WJ since mid 2020 🙄 🤦 Some of them we have been able to use but we still have a bunch of $$ tied up. I've booked and cancelled a flight with WJ using these credits a couple of times now and each time you cancel your $$ goes back to the travel bank with a new expiry date. So you could either (a) book a dummy flight and then cancel, extending your date or (b) pay the $20 fee to have it extended by another two years.

Thanks to everyone with good ideas to try.

WestJet's flight credits don't follow same rules as gift cards, B.C. court rules

westjet

Flight credits distributed by WestJet don't have the same flexibility as gift cards and can have expiration dates, according to a recent ruling from B.C.'s Court of Appeal.

The decision, posted Wednesday, determined "travel bank credits" don't have to follow the same regulations as "prepaid purchase cards" or "gift cards." The ruling explained the flight credits are typically issued for cancelled flights, lost luggage and general customer dissatisfaction.

In WestJet's case, the credits expire after a year, but can sometimes be extended for a $20 fee.

The court heard Tiana Sharifi got nearly $1,000 in credit after she bought a ticket for a flight, then voluntarily cancelled it. Sharifi used about $570 of the credit, but the remaining $420 expired after a year.

Sharifi argued that the credits count as a gift card and that consumer protection legislation prohibits WestJet from setting an expiration date. She applied to have the matter certified as a class action, which it was in October 2020.

WestJet then appealed the certification, arguing the credits aren't considered gift cards because they are issued as a refund, to compensate for an inconvenience or used as a promotional tool. When they're issued for a refund, WestJet argued, they function as "store credit," which isn't covered by prepaid purchase card laws.

"In my view, the issue is not whether Ms. Sharifi prepaid her ticket to travel with WestJet: she clearly did. Rather, the question is whether, in consideration for her 'non refundable ticket,' she prepaid a fixed amount for (travel credits), which she had the right to use in the future. In my view, she clearly did not," Justice Patrice Abrioux wrote in his decision.

"Ms. Sharifi purchased a prepaid flight. She did not purchase a prepaid purchase card, gift card, gift certificate or otherwise."

As a result, Abrioux said Sharifi's flight credits "do not fall within the definitions contained in the relevant consumer protection legislation" and WestJet's appeal was permitted, dismissing Sharifi's case.

Hi everyone, especially those who are interviewing in Moscow.

I am trying to pay our 350$ fee online as instructed in the email the consulate sent us. couple quick questions.

I went to https://payusvisafee.rsb.ru and entered my info and card # to pay the fee, of 11550 Rub. which fee is it? MRV, issuance, or short payment? im guessing MRV or issuance, no good instructions.

I am also having a time with my bank declining it, however they dont see it on their side as a fraud or non payment. They even issued a travel authorization on my card so it would work overseas.

anyone have these issues?

thank you so much!

I can always have her take cash to VTB24 or Post, but i would love to get this done today.

Had the same problem this afternoon. One the phone with Visa right now.

Will post the results on the site later.

Also if anyone can confirm that the MRV 11550 RUB(fiance is correct that would be great.

conversion works out correct, just want to double check

Ok, I was able to answer my own questions with enough leg work.

It is the MRV and it is the 11550 Fee. Works out to $350.

You can not use a debit card, it has to be a credit card. I was on the phone with wells fargo and verified by visa for over an hour before they said that I should try a credit card instead, worked like a charm.

Now we just have to wait until 12 tomorrow to schedule her interview!!! Doing happy dance!

Also, when you sign up online for the interview, it says to put in mailing address. That is where the visa will be delivered. You can also chose to have it held.

I may be working in Russia when she has her interview, so we may get to fly back together when Im done!!!

glad to see is worked for you, i still cant get it processed, had Visa remove the block

You may have to call the bank or issuer to have them remove any foreign fraud alerts since it is being taken out in Russia. I had that happen the first time i traveled. Had to find a way to call the bank and let them know i was traveling overseas.

this is turning out harder than I wanted. I was able to pay the visa fee online. It states what time you can schedule the interview based on when you paid and where. Credit card is the only same day or if done after hours next day service, and the easiest for us to do. I got my Receipt # and paid successfully. When I put the receipt number in the site says that

"No service fee can be found for the entered request number. Please validate your request number is correct and you have paid the correct amount for the visa you are applying."

I called the service desk support number they give and they told me that the receipt is not activated yet. Send an email with the copy of receipt and they will reply in 1-2 days. Bank took the money, but didnt pass the info on to the DOS as an active receipt number.

Wait a little more.

still no luck for me. I am using BofA credit card.

They have set up monitoring on the transactions attempts from the web but never get to the point of even attempting an authorization

First time in 12 different countries that i have had trouble processing my credit card.

We are left to using the post option (no bank close by, not to excited about this) also a little mad that the fee from the bank is more than the $350 fee post (works out to more than $385)

nice little markup on every transaction.

I was finally able to make our appointment! the 29th of Feb! I cant believe it! Wow! Just got up to try to schedule it and it went though. There are a lot of dates open. I just hope its not too soon. She is still waiting on her packet from the embassy.

OK, I wanted to ask this about the fee... so they tell us to make a profile on www.ustraveldocs.com/ru and pay the 350 visa fee and schedule the interview. Done and done. now this is why im asking. you go to the instructions page on Moscow embassy website, and it states "Payment. Please pay the application fee ($350 dollars for each applicant) ON THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW only after an Embassy employee instructs you to do so. We accept dollars and rubles. Credit cards are not acceptable." A. is this another fee on top of the one I paid? B. credit cards were used to pay online. C. the fee was 11550 rubles which works out to $395 according to my visa statement.

What I THINK is happening, is that they now use this website to collect the fee then schedule the interview and they havent updated the instructions page? or do we pay two different fees?? Im thinking too hard, so much going on right now!

Thanks for any input to this!

:)

You pay one fee and you have already done that. The website has outdated and incorrect information. Now you should be concentrating on getting the paperwork together for the interview and scheduling the medical.

we went with the bank option, was a little difficult finding the bank in other cities

have our interview scheduled for March 13th

Yes, the website is incorrect and outdated. Its frustrating with DOS and USCIS. Thank goodness for VJ! I have seen 2 different web pages from embassy and DOS say you need two different things, another that says you dont need part 2 on the DS-230 one that does. The fee payment and scheduling and what to bring to the interview was the most frustrating. But its all done. She has EVERYTHING in hand and the interview on the 29th of Feb!! Wish us luck!

PAVA obtains extension of the lending limit from Bank of Moscow

' style=

According to OJSC PAVA financial department, the Bank of Moscow granted an additional lending limit to the company to the amount of RUR77 mln. The agreement, signed in October of the current year, follows a positive revaluation of the company’s collateral which significantly increased availability of the credit facilities. The funds are intended for purchase of grain to be processed on PAVA mills with the total daily capacity of 1,500 MT.

The grain processor attracts credit resources in the largest Russian and international banks, enjoying reputation of a reliable partner with a well-defined and dynamic growth strategy. It should be noted, that the large scale of activities enables the company to obtain RUR loans which have a minimal interest rate of 13.5%.

PAVA is one of the leading grain processors in Russia. The company specializes in production of flour of different grades, cereals, bran and animal feed. Today, the primary development goal is transition to a vertically integrated business model, which includes active expansion of farming and implementing the deep wheat processing project.

Easiest way around this is to transfer the travel bank to a family member, and play hot potato with it every once in a while. Each time you transfer, they reset the expiry... for now, anyway.
