This Pet Carrier Made Traveling With My Dog So Much Easier

Between the lengthy TSA lines, crowded gates, and multi-hour layovers, schlepping through the airport is stressful enough on your own. Throw in a puppy—even worse, one who has rarely left the house—and things get all the more hectic. As a new pet owner, I’ve learned that a sturdy, well-designed pet carrier can make or break your (and your four-legged friend’s) plane ride and airport experience .

When it comes to picking the perfect pet carrier, you want something durable, lightweight, and designed with plenty of storage space for treats, toys, pads, leashes, poop bags, and, well, any other pet accessory you could dream of. Most importantly, the pet carrier should also meet all airline size regulations and guidelines so that you’re not panicking the night before your flight wondering what’ll happen if you can’t shove the carrier far enough under your seat.

Enter the Wild One Travel Carrier , which ended up meeting—and surpassing—all of my expectations, leaving me and my pup feeling at ease as we made our way through the clouds. Almost immediately after I purchased my dog a plane ticket to Florida to tag along with my husband and me for spring break —my dog's first flight with us—I began researching pet carriers. After countless hours spent scouring Facebook recommendations and Amazon reviews, I came across Wild One’s Travel Carrier. Initially, I didn’t buy it—instead, I opted for a much cheaper Amazon alternative. However, when that one arrived with a broken zipper just a week before our flight, I took it as a sign to trust my gut and order Wild One's carrier.

Fortunately, my instinct turned out to be correct. The Wild One Travel Carrier was delivered straight to my doorstep in perfect condition, and I instantly loved how lightweight it was (less than a pound on its own). While my dog is small at just 10 pounds, I didn’t want anything overly bulky that would weigh me down—and cause unpleasant shoulder pain—while rushing toward my gate. I also loved the carrier’s sleek exterior. While it comes in fun colors like a fashion-forward tan and a striking green, I opted for basic black to combat stains, dirt, and debris.

It’s clear this carrier was designed with versatility, durability, and functionality in mind. There are mesh walls for added breathability, a built-in collar clip, a detachable shoulder strap that pulls double duty as a leash, and a cushion that can be rolled out to use as a plush dog bed or travel mat when you get to your destination. I’d also be remiss not to mention the exterior storage pockets, which can be used to hold everything from pee pads to smartphones. (Some are zippered for an extra sense of security, while the smaller ones are left open to offer easy access.) Additionally, there is an outer strap that allows you to attach the carrier to your suitcase for hands-free, but still secure, carrying. Best of all? My dog didn’t seem to mind it one bit.

I flew JetBlue in an Even More Space seat down to Florida and had plenty of legroom to spare, even with the pet carrier tucked away under my seat. What’s more, the carrier’s low profile also offered my pup some extra room to poke his head out, which he did throughout the entire flight. On the way back, I flew in Delta’s Main Cabin, and, even with far less legroom, my dog was able to pop his head out, and I could still sit comfortably.

When I got home, I threw the interior mat in the wash, cleaned the outside of the carrier with a Lysol wipe, and tucked it away in my coat closet so that it’s ready for the next time we travel together.

Finding a pet carrier that meets all the needs of your four-legged frequent flier, and yours, too, is a challenge. What you want is lightweight, durable, loaded with pockets for pet gear and your own items, as comfortable inside as your dog's bed, easy to get your dog into, and attractive — while meeting airline and train travel regulations and size. 

I found dog carriers that were too heavy, too cramped, and lacking added storage, which meant toting an extra bag for dog essentials along with my luggage. I would arrive at my destination with a body that needed a chiropractic adjustment, and a dog who could use one too. 

Then I was sent the new Wild One Air Travel Carrier to test. It's a sleek and elegant bag that is loaded with extras. 

Wild One is a New York City-based startup that was founded in September 2018 by a group of pet lovers with a clean, modern design aesthetic. The company's mission is to "make living the 'pet life' easier and more joyful." To that end, they produce high-quality, functional gear and toys with a classic appeal. They also give back by donating a portion of their proceeds to Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue , a nonprofit rescue organization that helps find homes for dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural South.

The Air Travel Carrier is available in black and tan. I was sent the black version to test. Made from lightweight neoprene blended with polyester and spandex, it's soft-sided but with the shape retention of a hard-sided carrier.

Designed to meet airline regulations, it measures 17.5 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 10 inches high and is recommended for dogs up to 16 pounds. My 4.5 pound Yorkie, Buster, can actually stand up in it, let alone turn around per regulations. 

Mesh panels cover the sides and the top. They provide plenty of ventilation yet are discreet enough that some might not even notice you're traveling with your dog. Each side panel also has a privacy screen that can be retracted by zipper, and you can partly unzip the sides or the top so your dog can pop their head out. Inside, there's a quilted cushioned mat to keep them comfortable.

There are two carry handles, a removable adjustable shoulder strap that doubles as a leash, and a trolley sleeve. The sleeve fits easily over a luggage handle, and thanks to the carrier's rigid bottom, even with a tiny dog like Buster, the bag balances nicely on top of luggage. But if you've checked your bags and will be wearing the carrier on your shoulder or holding it by the carry handles, don't worry — it is actually surprisingly light.

The zippered outside pocket on the front spans the entire width of the carrier. On a recent trip, it held everything I needed for my dog, including treats, food, waste bags, and a travel water bowl. There are also two small open pockets on the backside where you can fit a cell phone, boarding pass, or passport.

But the most brilliant part of this carrier is the removable shoulder strap that actually doubles as a leash — at about 4 feet long fully extended, it's perfect for walking your dog before a flight or for keeping them close while waiting at the gate. When it's not needed, it can be stored inside a flap in the cushioned interior mat.

It gets even better though. When you arrive at your destination, you can unzip the carrier, fold down the front panel, and turn it into a canopy bed that functions as a comfy den.

While the carrier is hand wash only, when the quilted cushioned mat needs to be cleaned, you can toss it into a washing machine and dryer. To store the carrier, you can unzip the top and the sides, and it folds up flat and compact to fit on a shelf or in a drawer.

My dog happily traveled first-class in this carrier and got a good night's sleep in it, too

A couple of weekends ago, I made my first trek upstate with the travel carrier. With Buster, my Yorkie, snug in a sling lined with fleece, and Roxy, my 8-pound Pomeranian traveling first-class in the Wild One, I set off for the train from New York City going upstate. 

The carrier was light enough to stay on my shoulder while I changed trains midway to get to Grand Central. This is more impressive than it sounds as I'm a petite person who does not bear up well under weight on my shoulders.

On the subway, I zipped down the side panel so Roxy could pop her adorable head out and do what she does best — make friends. If she had hands, she would have signed a dozen autographs by the time we arrived at Grand Central.

I carried Roxy to her first "mountain" adventure without being encumbered by a bulky, heavy bag. She curled up for a nap inside the Wild One and stayed asleep for the entire 90-minute train ride. My friend met us at the station, and we set out on the road to the park where we could hike. It was about 2 miles, mostly uphill, and I turned the shoulder strap into a dog leash so Roxy could walk. 

Later that night at my friend's house, Roxy again snoozed happily in her canopy bed dreaming of more adventures. The Wild One Air Travel Carrier delivered on all fronts.

I found a few minor inconveniences with this carrier. The top zipper feels a bit flimsy. It opens completely like a zipper on a jacket, but it can be difficult to reconnect the two sides. After a few uses, the zipper still works, so it remains to be seen how it will hold up over the long term. 

The privacy screen can only be fully zipped up or down, when I would prefer double-sided zippers so I can unzip the top half and leave the screen in place on the lower half. 

The bottom line

The Wild One Air Travel Carrier is elegant and lightweight, and Wild One not only mastered the basics but also added thoughtful and useful extras like a leash, spacious pockets, and a convertible bed. Your dog (or cat) will travel comfortably, and you will too.

The price tag may be too high for some. If it isn't in your budget, we recommend the Prodigen Airline-Approved Pet Carrier ($22.99) .

The carrier has a weight maximum of 18 pounds, which is lower than others on our list, but keep in mind that some airlines have a 20 pound weight maximum for pet and carrier combined. Airlines may weigh pets with their carriers on the luggage scale, and an 18-pound dog combined with the 4-pound Away travel carrier might lead to travel disruptions, so it's a limit you'll want to be conscious of before traveling.

Petmate Aspen Pet Porter Dog Kennel : While not as tough as our favorite cargo hold kennel, this more affordable option scored well with our tester, who used it to travel with a 55-pound dog.

Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier : Our tester cat was able to pry open the zipper and tear this carrier up with her claws—we have some durability concerns. Also, only the smallest two available sizes are suitable as an under seat carry-on.

Sleepypod Air In-Cabin Pet Carrier : This is a high-quality, premium carrier, but its duffle bag design was a little too claustrophobic for our big cat tester, and so at this price point we preferred carriers with a stiffer leather construction.

What To Look For

Size Guidelines

Flights have more stringent requirements than other ways of traveling with your pet . The exterior measurements of the carrier you select must fall within the sizing guidelines provided by the airline provider for your flight. A typical limitation is that pet carriers need to be within 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches tall to fly in the cabin. Some airlines also have a maximum weight for your pet plus their carrier, but this varies between airlines, so we recommend using the guidelines provided by the airline you intend to fly with your pet most frequently. Hard-Sided vs. Soft-Sided

The carriers that made our list tend to fall in between hard and soft, offering structured yet flexible coverage for your pet that is just malleable enough to accommodate under the seat dimensions on an airplane. Easy Carrying

If your pet carrier will be your personal item on a flight, then it's likely you'll also be juggling a piece of carry-on luggage. The best option we found is the Gunner G1 Kennel. It’s designed to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, with rotomolded double walls to regulate the temperature and absorb the impact for any bumps that may occur during takeoff, in the air, and when landing. You won’t be able to access your dog during your flight, so it’s important to make sure they are secure prior to boarding.

Your dog will need water in their kennel for the flight, and the recessed floor for this carrier will limit any discomfort they may experience in case of a spill. You can also add an orthopedic bed designed for the kennel or your dog’s favorite blanket.

One pocket is large enough to stash essentials such as puppy pads , a leash , and a collapsible water bowl . The top and shorter sides are made from a durable mesh so you and your pet can keep an eye on each other.

We found that the mesh made it difficult for other passengers to see our furry traveler, and the bag has less structured protection than other carriers we tested, so be sure to give your aisle mates notice that your pet is inside so they can watch their step.

There is no standard among airlines so you have to check the guidelines with your flight provider for each flight. According to Wild One’s website, it can carry dogs up to 20 pounds, and it has a hook inside that you can attach to your pup’s collar so he can’t wriggle out.

To make carrying your dog extra convenient, the Wild One Everyday Carrier’s designed with two different length straps — one for carrying him by hand and one for over-the-shoulder use.

Plus, it has four pockets, both on the inside and outside of the carrier, to hold your phone and wallet on top of everything your dog needs, too.

This bag’s also made with the environment in mind, since the knit exterior is made entirely of recycled materials (80 water bottles per bag, to be exact).

And to make cleanup a little easier, the inside mat is machine washable — though you’ll still have to hand-wash the bag itself.

The Downsides

There are a couple small downsides to the Wild One Everyday Carrier.

It can be a lot of weight on one shoulder

Like with any shoulder bag, adding a bunch of weight — like, say, a 20-pound dog — can be a lot on your shoulder after a while.

“ It does cause some shoulder strain for me if I carry Lucy for too long, but that's with any shoulder bag with 20 pounds of weight in it, so not a specific negative for this brand, just something to keep in mind with any shoulder-strap bag.” — Jane Y.

One of our pet parents wished there was a little more padding on the shoulder straps to reduce any discomfort.

Sizing isn’t perfect

The Wild One Everyday Carrier is 21.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide and 14.25 inches high.

All dogs are shaped differently, so even if they fit this bag’s weight limit, it might not be wide or deep enough to accommodate certain pups.

“Specifically for my dog, she doesn't fit perfectly in the bag despite being 16 pounds. She has long legs, so she can't really lay down comfortably in it, but it's still easy to carry the bag with her sitting in it instead of laying.” — Marissa D.

One pet parent also noticed it’s not super clear what the weight capacity actually is.

I always recommend to measure your pet while comfortably laying down as this is the typical position during flight time. Keep in mind all of my airline approved totes are designed with pet safety and comfort as the priority, and then by airline under seat requirements, so sizing is limited by that criteria. I know it’s sometimes difficult to size based on measurement or images. I make every effort to keep pricing as low as possible so that anyone can afford a safe and comfortable carrier for their pet, so please make every effort to properly measure your pet before ordering. The postage cost for a return is an average of $14 for the USA, and that is very difficult for a small business to bear. Comfort And Safety Overall

I work hard on our carriers and tote designs to bring out the best value for each model line I develop, each is actually hand made. I use only branded premium zippers that can be found on designer purses and jeans. I use water resistant materials that are also used in the production of military parachutes. I only use cruelty free human made materials such as vegan leatherette and faux fleece padding. On any tote always look them over for proper seatbelt attachments and metal safety locks or clasps. Look for a design structure that stands up straight without sagging and is well ventilated with a strong chew free mesh.

I know preparing to fly with a pet can be stressful and you have a lot of questions. The benefits and popularity of frameless soft sided pet carriers is their pliability and ability to conform to varying under seat configurations of modern aircraft. All airlines actually have similar sizing requirements, and those are more stringent on narrow bodied aircraft than wide bodied aircraft, but yet the primary design of an airline capable tote is to comfortably fit your pet but yet conform to fit under the 8.5" seat. Many airlines will indeed show 8.5” as their height spec, but that is targeted for the older style hard shell carriers and not pliable soft sided carriers. A carrier that is truly only 8.5” in height will only fit the smallest of kittens, puppies and bunnies. Keep in mind, airline capable carriers are designed for your pet to be laying down, as most pets will need to do so to allow for fitting under the seat. Most of my bags are designed at about 18x11x11” exterior measurement, as that is the optimal size for under seat capability on the widest variety of aircraft. All are designed with pet safety and comfort as a priority, and secondly with pliable fabrics that allow compression for under seat compatibility, so it’s mostly a choice of styling preference with each model. Most of the standard sized models are about 16" on the interior length, while the larger Big Apple model is about an 18" interior. It is about 2” longer at 20” exterior than most airlines will spec, but it’s built for those pets where there is simply not an option for a smaller size. The Big Apple model has been on the market for a long period of time now, literally sold worldwide, and a very popular model. For those who desire a bag that is 9” in height to more easily meet under seat specs I can recommend to look at the backpack models such as the Monterey and Aspen, all of which are designed and padded to lay on their short side for under seat use. Another option is the smaller Gold Series Mini model, which is about an inch smaller all around than the standard sized models.

It is important to point out that there is a substantial design difference between a frameless soft sided airline capable pet carrier and a standard carrier. Keep in mind the priority for an airline capable carrier is the ability and pliability necessary to accomplish under seat requirements, which by definition means that an airline capable carrier is purposely not designed with the same firm structure as a non airline capable pet carrier. What gives a soft sided carrier much of its structure is the fabric used and the zippers themselves along with a thin wire frame. 

The reality of airlines (and the TSA or equivalents) is there is no such thing as a blanket approval of a pet carrier or brand, as there are many other factors involved. I work with representatives of the major airline carriers in the design of my totes, including most domestic airlines, and at this point over the years my various totes have been used on virtually every airline around the world. While all airlines can vary a bit due to differing aircraft models, all have the same requirements of under forward seat compatibility combined with pet comfort. The TSA requirement that all airline crew must follow is that the foot space must be cleared for takeoffs and landings, and this applies to purses, bags, and yes, pet carriers. Under seat spacing and configurations can vary between regional, national and international routes as differing aircraft (wide bodied vs narrow bodied) are used, but the pliability and ability to conform to various seat configurations is what sets the frameless soft sided carrier apart from other types of framed or hard shell carriers and has led to their popularity. 

In short, all of my airline capable carriers you see on the site are regularly used on domestic and international airlines, and all are compliant with under seat requirements, but the reality is that there can always be an aircraft or route of a particular nature that uses a smaller aircraft without typical under seat clearance, but I have rarely come across that with reviews and feedback from literally thousands of users over many years. It is always advised to proactively check with your airline of choice well prior to departure. Keep in mind many airlines have an in-cabin pet limitation per flight, so you will want to reserve your space early on in your planning.

It's a great question and something important for all of us. 

All of my totes are hand sewn with a sewing time of over 3.5 hours each. I only source hi end premium vegan materials from many countries and have contracted sewing facilities complete production to my specs depending on many factors to keep prices low for users. I use facilities based in Vietnam, Cambodia, Spain, China and zippers primarily from Japan. I use different facilities based on the cost and availability of various fabrics and resin mesh.

As a Henderson, NV based family business nobody would prefer more than myself to produce the products locally, Unfortunately the reality is that the quality of materials needed are not typically available at scale in the USA. One reason there are very few actual sewing factories in the USA is that it's a very laborious job at over 3 hours of sewing time for each bag so it is indeed one of those garment related industries where most products are produced offshore. 

My goal has always been to focus on pet safety and comfort, and offer a carrier that boasts higher end materials than usually found on products in this price range.

I design all of my bags with the primary emphasis on pet safety and comfort. All models include safety features like seatbelt attachments, a heavy resin mesh and locking clasps or self locking zippers. I use premium brand zippers and hardware on all models as well, as many know I have a pet peeve on zipper quality. All models also include faux fleece padding, and extra/replacement pads are available for purchase at cost. What actually makes the difference in the model lines aside from the looks is the fabric itself. Keep in mind that all of my airline capable totes are frameless soft sided pet carriers, this is what allows for the pliability and ability to conform to various under seat configurations of modern aircraft and meet under seat requirements of all of the airline companies. The fabric itself combined with the zipper closures is what primarily gives a soft sided carrier its structure and strength, so a heavier fabric provides more structure than a lighter fabric.

Copper Series  - This model takes advantage of a taller structure that gives it a boxy and spacious interior at a length of 19” It includes a faux fleece pad with a plywood base for extra carrying strength, and uses a plastic locking clasp.

Silver Series  - This model takes advantage of a lighter nylon fabric that gives it a boxy and spacious interior at a length of 17.5” It includes a dark faux fleece pad with a plywood base for extra strength. Diamond Series  - The Diamond platform is a very popular light nylon fabric which incorporates an extra-plush faux fleece pad with a plywood base for extra strength. Platinum Series  - The popular series is built off of the same platform as the Diamond, but with a much thicker and more padded composite exterior 300D fabric coated with PVC for enhanced durability. Platinum Series Expandable  - The popular series is built off of the same platform as the popular Platinum Series Totes, but with a zippered expansion port on one side which allows for more space for your pet when opened. Typically only the smallest of pets can easily fully stand in an airline capable pet carrier since height is so limited by under seat constraints. For most pets its more of a haunch than a full standing position. Keep in mind regardless of the height of any carrier, the interior is less sizing due to padding. Most of the models have an interior height of about 10", while the Gold Series Mini is closer to 9".

Great question. I will start with the bad and then dig in deeper. The truth and reality is there is no such brand or model of a soft sided pet carrier that will be impervious to a stressed pet, as the materials by definition must be pliable. Admittedly there is no such thing as a pliable mesh or fabric that will hold up well to the jaws and claws of a stressed pet, and even the cutest of kittens and puppies are quite able to damage mesh and fabrics. But yes, there are many design and materials details that can help alleviate the risk of a pet destroying or escaping a carrier, and i cannot stress enough how much simply acclimating one's pet to a new carrier in the home environment helps to remove pet stress. Here are some details i use to avoid problems. I only use the strongest pliable teslin® resin mesh available for all of my totes, which is commonly used for its durability in the assembly of outdoor furniture and patio umbrellas. I also only use an enhanced and strengthened nylon fabric in all models, which is also used in the manufacture of military grade parachutes for its waterproof properties, strength and durability. Most of my current lineup of models include self locking zippers. About 18 months ago i switched my entire line up of carriers to self locking zippers. Self locking zippers are zippers which are designed in a way that they cannot be pushed open from the inside of the bag, it is impossible due to the zipper mechanism. I switched the entire line from the older style locking clasps as i found over a long period of time that the clasps in both metal and plastic were fragile and not durable. The self locking zippers remove the need for clasps, and actually results in a much safer tote for pets, and users overwhelmingly prefer them as they do not have to rely on handling the small unreliable clasps. The old style clasps simply do not meet my standards. I always focus firstly on pet safety and comfort, and the reason i switched all of the models to self locking zippers is exactly for that reason. As a fail safe, all of my models also include leash tethers, meaning one can anchor your pet to the bag by the interior leash just in case during stressful travels. I use absolutely no added chemicals in the production of the totes. The bags are sealed in a polywrap and then sealed in master cartons for shipping. The newly opened bag will have a smell akin to a new car, where the vegan leatherette and the resin mesh will air out over a few hours to a few days of exposure and dissipate quickly. I only use cruelty free human made materials such as vegan leatherette and faux fleece padding for every model. Be sure to acclimate your pet as much as possible to a new carrier in a home environment with favorite treats and toys. You never want their first adventure out to be to a stressful airport or veterinarian. Let your pet learn to appreciate the carrier as a safe home away from home. About 18 months ago I switched my entire line up of totes to self locking zippers after a long period of testing. Self locking zippers are zippers which cannot be pushed open from the inside of the tote, please try it out for yourself. I switched the entire line from the older style locking clasps as I found over a long period of time that the clasps in both metal and plastic were fragile and not durable. The self locking zippers remove the need for clasps, and actually results in a much safer tote for pets, and users overwhelmingly prefer them as they do not have to rely on using the small unreliable clasps. The old style clasps simply do not meet my standards. I always focus firstly on pet safety and comfort, and the reason I switched all of the models to self locking zippers is exactly for that reason.
