  • How To Spend 48 Hours...

How to Spend 48 Hours in Miri, Malaysia

Beautiful sunset from Canada Hill, Miri

Miri, a former oil town recently classified as a city, offers some of Sarawak’s best sunsets, a walkable centre and a day trip away from Niah Caves. Here’s how to get the most out of 48 hours in Miri for budget-conscious travellers for culture, beaches, nature and history.

Day one: explore the markets, eat sarawakian food and a beach sunset.

The first part of 48 hours in Miri explores the city’s markets, Fan Recreation Park and a trip to the handicraft centre before watching a (hopefully) incredible sunset. Culture Trip recommends Next Room Backpackers Hostel in the city centre for its convenient location, sociable atmosphere and budget-friendly prices.

Morning: Have a Local Breakfast at Central Market

Start the day at Central Market along Jalan Brooke. Apart from serving as both a wet and dry market, it also offers a variety of affordable food for breakfast. Approximately 30 stalls fill the inside, catering to Sarawakians with excellent food at local prices. Expect rice and noodle dishes starting at RM5 ($1.30) and an iced coffee for RM1.50 ($0.40). After breakfast, explore the market, snap photographs (remember to ask permission if people are in your shot) and immerse in the local culture.

Afternoon: Sightseeing in Miri

Spend the first afternoon of 48 hours in Miri exploring the city. We recommend visiting Miri Fan Recreation Park in the heart of the city centre. The park features an amphitheatre, gardens and a koi pond and shady areas to sit and relax. Head to Shukie Café for lunch and sample another Sarawakian dish. Next check out the Miri Handicraft Centre for a souvenir. This is where Sarawak’s ethnic minorities gather and sell traditional handicrafts.

Evening: Sunset at Brighton Beach

Every tourist should experience Sarawak’s spectacular sunset (assuming clear weather) at least once in their 48 hours in Miri. The best spot is at Brighton Beach , known locally as Tanjong Lobang, a few kilometres from the city centre. Expect a series of yellows, oranges and pinks against the backdrop of the beach and piers. Pro tip: Miri’s Seahorse Statue, a city landmark, is nearby and worth visiting.

A popular place for locals to catch the beautiful Miri sunset

Night: Sample Sarawakian satay

After the sunset, take a taxi or Grab to Madli’s Restaurant and enjoy an early dinner. This family-run halal restaurant in Miri serves Sarawak-style satay. Order the Fun Plate, which consists of 10 sticks of both chicken and beef. Have a quiet night; an early start tomorrow is essential.

Try the famous local satay for dinner after a long day of exploring Miri

Day two: Sunrise, Niah National Park and evening cocktails

Day two of 48 hours in Miri needs an early start. Set the alarm for 5:00am and get to Canada Hill for sunrise before spending the day at Niah National Park exploring caves and archaeological sites. After an active day, look forward to a few cocktails at Miri’s Sky Garden.

Morning: Sunrise over Miri

Wake up early and head to Canada Hill to catch the sunrise over Miri. Canada Hill sits on an elevated limestone hill overlooking both the city and South China Sea. Take a taxi or Grab to the top before walking approximately 30 minutes or so back down. Enjoy the views and the Grand Old Lady, a monument dedicated to the first oil well in Miri. Be aware Miri’s sunrise is usually between 6:00am and 6:30am. Have breakfast at Sau Pau Café, which offers a selection of pastries and Pau (or Pao), a bun with a sweet or savoury filling.

Afternoon and Evening: Day Trip to Niah Caves

Niah Caves National Park , located just over 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Miri, is a geological, historical and cultural haven. The national park consists of several caves, passageways and archaeological sites. Human remains believed to be over 40,000-years-old were discovered in one of the caves, while the Painted Cave has walls covered in ancient rock art. Visitors might see local Penan tribesmen retrieving the edible swiftlet’s bird nest too. Other activities include hiking along jungle trails, birdwatching, exploring the caves on an extensive network of boardwalks and seeing boat-shaped wooden coffins. While it might be challenging and costly to visit Niah Caves, the opportunity to experience this on a day trip is usually worth the time and effort.

Niah is one of the most popular caves to visit in Miri

Practical information

Visitors have three options to get to the national park : Rent a car and self-drive, take a taxi or use public transport. Expect a taxi to cost approximately RM150 ($38) one way (at least one-and-a-half hours). Or take bus number 33A from Kuching to Pujut Corner Bus Terminal. Then get any bus travelling south for RM15 ($3.80) and get off at Niah Rest Station. Take a taxi to the entrance. Niah opens daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm and costs RM10 ($2.50) for Malaysians and RM20 ($5) for non-Malaysians. From the entrance, it’s approximately three kilometres (1.9 miles) to get to the park proper. Expect the full day trip to take between eight to 10 hours. Pro tips: Start as early as possible after watching the sunrise and having breakfast. Bring a change of clothes, plenty of water and snacks.

Night: Cocktails at Miri Sky Garden

After returning from Niah, freshen up and head to Miri Sky Garden on level 17 of the Meritz Hotel. Indulge in the buffet-style steamboat and order a couple of cocktails and unwind after a busy, but rewarding, 48 hours in Miri.

15 Best Things to Do in Miri (Malaysia)

Little-known Miri in Sarawak played a crucial role in modern-day Malaysia.

In the early 20th-century, geologists struck oil in Miri. The town boomed attracting migrant workers from China. Malaysia’s black gold fuels much of the economy today.

But this small oil-rich city on the South China Sea isn’t just about petroleum.

It has a thriving Chinese community, Sarawak’s oldest Buddhist temple and a handicraft market selling all kinds of locally produced goods.

Miri acts as a gateway to four surrounding national parks, beaches and occasionally hosts the enchanting Blue Tears too.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Miri :

1. Panoramic views from Canada Hill

Miri Hill

Canada Hill, sometimes called Miri Hill, towers behind the city center.

The limestone hill reaches a height of 150 meters (492 feet). A network of easy trails leads to its summit for the city’s best views.

An army of taxis awaits those looking for a quick way up.

Marvel at the panoramic over the small city and the South China Sea in the distance.

Canada Hill (Bukit Minyak in Bahasa) is a favorite place to see both the sunrise and sunset.

2. The Grand Old Lady: Malaysia’s first oil well

The Grand Old Lady

The Grand Old Lady on Canada Hill marks the spot where Shell first drilled oil in Miri back in 1910.

Standing at 30 meters (98 feet), the monument is a replica of Malaysia’s first oil well. The landmark offers a window into the importance of the industry which revolutionized Malaysia.

While the monument itself isn’t much to look at, travelers usually combine the experience with hiking Canada Hill.

Snap photographs and consider how the oil discovered in this spot fueled the nation’s development and paid for Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers.

3. Learn about the crucial role of Miri at the Petroleum Museum

Petroleum Museum Miri

The Petroleum Museum on Canada Hill tells the story of oil in Miri.

Before its discovery in 1910, Miri was a relatively small fishing village. Locals lived in wooden houses. They made their living from the South China Sea.

Miri transformed in a few decades. Wealthy magnates moved to the area. Chinese migrant workers changed the demographics.

The Petroleum Museum covers this story while giving snippets on oil extraction methods.

If you want to gain a deeper appreciation of Miri’s direct influence on modern-day Malaysia, spend a few hours here.

4. San Ching Tian: Miri’s most extravagant temple

San Ching Tian Temple

The grand San Ching Tian is among Southeast Asia’s largest Taoist temples.

Set inside a tranquil garden, the temple has an elegant entrance and a two-tiered orange roof. Intricate dragons decorate the exterior while bronze statues of religious icons fill the inside shelves.

Since opening in 2000, San Ching Tian has become one of the most visited places of worship in Miri.

The temple is approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) northeast of the city center.

5. The oldest Buddhist temple in Miri

Tua Pek Kong Miri

Tua Pek Kong holds the title as Miri’s oldest temple.

Chinese immigrants enticed by the booming oil industry built this temple in 1913. They dedicated it to their deity who protects all overseas Chinese.

Tua Pek Kong is next to the river in Miri’s old town. The temple exhibits a colorful exterior decorated with dragons.

Visitors need to remove their shoes to enter. Take care to follow the local customs. Limit the number of photographs when monks are inside.

During Chinese New Year, the temple and its neighbourhood transform into a street-wide celebration. This lively festival bursts with color, noise and energy.

6. Search for local craft at the Handicraft Center

Miri Handicraft Center

Local artisans sell their handicraft at the Miri Handicraft Center.

The small center along Jalan Brooke has dozens of stalls where vendors showcase their handmade products.

Some sell traditional weaved objects, which includes mats made by the indigenous Penan peoples. Others have textiles, handbags and traditional clothes.

Stroll through the passageways and meet Sarawak’s indigenous communities who fall under the umbrella term ‘Dayak’.

Marvel at the colors, craftsmanship and detail. Wave to the smiling elderly women sat next to their stalls.

Miri Handicraft Center is the most recommended place in Miri to buy souvenirs.

The center opens daily between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Cultural shows sometimes take place in the evening.

7. Gardens, promenades and a musical fountain in Miri City Fan

Miri City Fan

From above, Miri City Fan resembles the shape of a traditional handheld fan.

On the ground, it sprawls 26 acres separated into ten thematic zones. The park’s centerpiece is an amphitheater surrounded by a koi pond, maintained Islamic gardens and a promenade.

Sit beneath the trees and watch the musical fountain. Or head to Miri Library to brush up on local culture inside the spacious air-conditioned reading room.

After opening in the 1990s, Miri City Fan has been a hit with residents.

Joggers speed along the paths in the cooler morning and evening air.

8. Sunset cocktails at Miri Sky Bar

Cocktail Sunset

Meritz Hotel’s 17th floor Sky Bar provides unobstructed views of Miri and the South China Sea.

Tables fill the outdoor terrace in dry weather. Customers unwind outside admiring the views in the early evening.

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available.

Sit outside with a glass of imported wine or a cocktail watching Borneo’s famous sunset. Or choose from their selection of coffee, smoothies and soft drinks.

Miri Sky Bar doubles up as a classy restaurant.

Locals usually go for the set-price steamboat. Steamboat uses a flavored boiling soup to cook meat, tofu and vegetables.

Check out their website for regular drink promotions. The sky bar opens between 6:00pm and 10:00pm daily.

9. Miri’s street food at Saberkas Weekend Market

Miri Market

Located approximately 3 kilometers (1.2 miles) northeast of the city center, Saberkas Weekend Market is a favorite with locals.

Rows of stalls have everything from fresh produce and tropical fruits to handicraft. Vendors sell street food at rock bottom prices including satay (Malaysian kebabs) and barbequed chicken.

According to Miri’s residents, Saberkas is among Sarawak’s friendliest and most colorful markets. Head down for dinner and see how the local’s go about their daily business.

The wet market, outside Saberkas Commercial Center, opens in the evenings from Thursday to Sunday.

10. A national park from another planet

Gunung Mulu National Park

Gunung Mulu National Park is like a scene from a sci-fi movie.

Limestone pinnacles rise into razor-sharp points guarding the entrance to dozens of almost hidden caves. Soaring mountains surround 17 vegetation zones inside the UNESCO-listed national park.

Guided tours pass through both Clearwater and Deer Cave before exploring canyons, waterfalls and otherworldly landscapes.

Keep your eyes open for primates, deer and billions of squeaking bats.

Getting to Gunung Mulu is almost as challenging as visiting another planet. Travelers need to either take a 30-minute flight from Miri or embark on a multi-day expedition through the jungle.

Most visitors usually stay the night in the park’s accommodation.

11. Sarawak’s best caves systems

Niah National Park

Niah National Park has a reputation for its sprawling network of caves.

Located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the south of Miri, Niah is more accessible than Gunung Mulu.

After arriving at the national park, guides take tourists through the limestone caverns. Look out for the geological wonders including the patterns of stalagmites and stalactites.

Other parts of Niah have ancient cave painting and pagan burial sites.

Archeologists discovered the oldest human skeleton in Malaysia at Niah National Park too.

Most travelers spend the full day at the national park. Because of its size, find out what you want to do before visiting to get the most out of your trip.

12. Jungle trekking in Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills provides visitors with the chance to go jungle trekking near Miri.

Dozens of marked trails penetrate the rainforest. Some pass through differing ecosystems to waterfalls. Others rise to vantage points and natural pools.

Having a guide is essential.

Listen to their expertise as they identify the howls of distance gibbons and point to the occasional sun bear camouflaged against the tree trunks.

The most popular trails lead to both Pantu Waterfall and Latak Waterfall.

Pack plenty of water. Bring leech socks.

13. An equatorial sunset on Brighton Beach

Tanjung Lobang Sunset

Miri’s Brighton Beach is a highlight of the city.

Known locally as Tanjung Lobang, the beach with its two characteristic piers stretches along the South China Sea.

Local families play in the sand and swim in the warm, gentle waters. The wafting smell of barbeques hangs in the evening air.

But the real magic happens around 6:00pm when the equatorial sun dips towards the horizon. A mirage of oranges, purples and reds spread across the distant sky.

After sunset, stroll along the promenade and pick up some fresh seafood in the many beachside restaurants.

14. Empty beaches and strange rock formations on Tusan Beach

Tusan Beach

Tusan Beach is just far enough from Miri to keep the visitor numbers at bay. But close enough to reach within 30 minutes by car.

The beach itself has a long sandy coastline and gentle waters. Vertical sandstone cliffs tower against Tusan’s sandy shore.

Come down in the afternoon with your towel and enjoy the privacy of an empty beach for a few hours.

Or bring the camera and capture the strange rock formations caused by decades of erosion.

15. Witness the rare and hypnotic Blue Tears

Dinoflagellates

The ocean and sea bursts with life so small that we need a microscope to see them.

Some of these micro-organisms are called dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates have an uncanny ability to generate light under certain conditions.

Tusan Beach, when everything is just right, transforms into a glowing blue mass.

Tiny organisms glow neon blue which spreads across the sea as the waves roll in.

This natural phenomenon is known as the ‘Blue Tears’ in Sarawak and sometimes takes place at Tusan.

Witnessing this natural spectacle is both enthralling and awe-inspiring.

But it doesn’t happen every night, and you’ll need a big dose of luck to see it.

An Evening at Coco Cabana

I’ll never forget my perfect evening at Coco Cabana, one of my most joyous memories and one of Miri’s best places to visit. It’s on the beachfront and offers stunning views of the South China Sea. While I was at Coco Cabana, a prominent Japanese BonBon festival was happening over the weekend, and the atmosphere, with night entertainment and food stalls, was electric. I enjoyed trying different Japanese foods and watching the traditional Japanese dance performances. It was a fantastic experience.

Although events don’t happen every weekend at Coco Cabana, it doesn’t take away from the Miri attraction. The Sunset Bar, in particular, is a must-visit spot. You will have to drive through the oil palm plantations for at least half an hour to reach the waterfall itself. Mulu is located in a remote location, deep in the jungles of Borneo and can only be reached by flight.  Maswings  is the only operator flying to Mulu from either Kota Kinabalu, Miri or Kuching. Visitors coming here usually stay over at the national park or the Marriott Hotel  for a few days to fully explore the area. EXACTLY How To Get From Miri To Brunei [2024]

Exploring Borneo and wondering how to go from Miri to Brunei? We can help!

Miri is a major city in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is right next to the border with Brunei so it can be tempting to pop over and see Brunei as well when exploring Malaysia. Or perhaps you are on a big Borneo adventure travelling along the coast. In this case, travelling overland between Brunei and Miri is a necessary step.

While the Miri Brunei distance is not that far, this journey is more complicated than most. Since covid hit, there is no longer a bus from Miri to Brunei and information online on how to travel to Brunei from Miri can be badly out of date. We hope to make working out how to enter Brunei from Miri as easy as possible with this guide.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

These instructions for how to go to Brunei from Miri rely on people’s personal experiences on the ground so after you make this journey, please let us know if anything differs from the instructions below so we can update this article. You can contact us here.

Below, I break down exactly how to get to Brunei from Miri using these accounts so you know exactly what you need to do, when, whether you are looking for a Miri to Brunei bus or a Miri to Brunei flight. This way, you will be on to more fun parts of your trip as quick as possible!

I also describe the reverse journey so you know exactly how to get from Brunei to Miri.

Map: Miri-Brunei

Miri to Brunei map

Note that Miri is in Malaysia and Brunei is a separate country. So you will need to cross a border.

In this article, we assume you want to travel from Miri to Bandar Seri Begwan, the capital of Brunei, or vice versa.

The distance from Miri to Bandar Seri Begawan is about 158 kilometres and the journey takes about 2.25 hours. This is heavily dependent on traffic and road conditions, especially wait times at the border.

The border to Brunei itself is only 28 kilometres from the centre of Miri.

BEST OPTION: How To Go From Miri To Brunei

By far, the quickest and best option for travelling from Miri to Brunei is to take a private taxi.

The cheapest option is to take a combination of buses and taxis.

Here’s a summary of your options:

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Option 1: Miri To Brunei Flight

There are no direct flights from Miri airport to Brunei. You need to fly via somewhere else with the quickest options being via Kuala Lumpur, Kuching or Kota Kinabalu.

This makes it quite time consuming with connecting flight options starting at 5.5 hours. There are many airline choices with AirAsia having some of the best options.

Flight prices start at RM320.

On arrival, Brunei International Airport is about 10 kilometres from the city centre. There are taxis available to take you to your accommodation.

Click here to see the prices and options for your dates.

Option 2: Miri To Brunei Bus + Taxi

As mentioned above, there is no longer a bus service from Miri to Brunei (or vice versa). The service that used to run by PHLS Express has not resumed operations since the pandemic started, and it does not seem like they will.

There is no Miri bus to Brunei border either, so there is no way to get around having to take taxis for part of the journey.

Definitely set out early to make this journey so you have the best chance possible to find public transport from Miri to Brunei on as many segments as possible. Plus, for the segments where there aren’t buses, you’ll have more chance of finding the taxis you need in Brunei earlier in the day.

If you can’t find taxis for those sections, you may have to ask people around you for a ride.

The first part of travel Miri to Brunei is straightforward. Use the Grab app and get a taxi to take you to the border. They won’t be able to take you across, but they can take you to the immigration point for Malaysia. This is only about 28 kilometres and 40 minutes from the centre of Miri. It cost RM37 when I was here, but the price can vary depending on how busy the network is.

Pass through the Malaysian formalities at the border.

Once you have passed through here, you will need to walk to the Brunei side of the border which is about a kilometre. The border and this crossing are really made for cars and it is awkward without one, but it is possible to cross on foot.

This is the trickiest part of this journey since you need to walk across the border itself, and you have to hope there are taxis available at the Brunei side to help you out.

Note that when you are crossing the border, there is no wifi and Malaysian sim cards don’t work so have any documents you need.

After you deal with the Brunei formalities, look to see if there is a taxi here that you can take. If you have a Brunei sim card, you can also try ordering a taxi using the Dart app (Brunei’s version of Grab or Uber). You want to take the taxi to Kuala Belait where the buses to Seria leave. This is about 20 kilometres away and costs around BND$20.

From Kuala Belait, you can take a bus to Seria. These depart regularly until about 4pm and cost BND$1 and take about half an hour.

From Seria bus station, there is a minibus to Bandar Seri Begawan. This bus stops a lot over the 100 kilometres of this journey and can take many hours. It leaves hourly from Seria and costs BND$6. It will take you to central Bandar Seri Begawan.

It may be possible to take a more express bus. If you find one, take it! And then let us know the details so we can update these instructions.

This is complicated. Get ready to ask for help along the way and for this to end up being quite a lot of hours of travel.

Serasa Ferry Terminal, Brunei

Option 3: Miri To Brunei By Car

If you can find a rental company that will let you take their cars over the border and give you all necessary documentation then you can drive to Brunei.

The downside of this option is that you will probably need to drive the car back again to Miri.

This only takes about 2.25 hours depending on wait times at the border. Driving from Miri to Brunei is not hard. It’s only the border and finding a rental company that is complicated.

I found this rental company who allows driving in Brunei for an extra fee.

Click here to read more about driving in Malaysia .

Option 4: Taxi From Miri To Brunei

Regular taxis cannot take you across the border. However, it’s possible to organise a private transfer that will take you door-to-door from Miri to Brunei. This is so much easier than taking the bus and taxi combo option described above. This company may be able to help you out.

This company organises tours to Brunei from Miri so they can help you with a tour or may be able to arrange a driver to get you there as well.

If you can organise a private transfer, this is by far the easiest and quickest option.

How To Get From Brunei To Miri

Canada Hill Views Miri

If you are travelling from Brunei to Miri instead, the instructions above are still valid, you just need to reverse them.

You can look up flights here.

You can also try to find a Brunei car rental company that will allow you to take cars into Malaysia or try this company for a private transfer to Miri.

Just like the reverse journey, there is no Brunei Miri bus. It’s a complicated overland journey of buses and taxis if you wish to save money.

If you wish to travel overland via bus and taxi, it’s especially important that you set out early in case you have delays at the earlier parts.

For the first part of this journey, you need to take a minibus to Seria bus station. These leave from outside the Brunei Hotel on the corner of Jalan Pemancha and Kianggeh Road. It costs BND$6. These stop a lot and can take many hours to cover the 100 kilometres to Seria. Get one early!

At the Seria Bus Station, you can take a bus to Kuala Belait. These take about 20 minutes and cost BND$1. Take it to the last stop in a parking lot.

Across the road from here, there’s a covered parking lot with a barber. This is where you can hopefully find a taxi to the border.

If you have a local sim and the Dart app (Brunei’s version of Grab or Uber), you can also try to get a taxi this way.

Once you get to the border, unless you can arrange for the taxi you take from Kuala Belait to drive you across, you’ll need to get out at the Brunei side and stamp out of the country.

You’ll then need to walk the kilometres across to the Malaysian side and stamp into Malaysia.

From here, it can be tricky to get to Miri. The easiest option is to ask people passing through here for a lift in return for some money. Or if you see anyone with phone access, ask to borrow some internet so you can order a Grab taxi.

Any time you get stuck, be quick to ask for help. The journey time can add up, so making mistakes can make it difficult to do this in one day.

Final Words

For two places so close together, it can be surprisingly difficult to travel Miri Malaysia to Brunei. Hopefully, a bus line decides to add a bus to Brunei from Miri soon to make it easier.

In the meantime, this is a place to splurge on a private transfer if you can. Flying is overly time consuming and travelling by land with bus and taxis is for the adventurous.

  • Paradise776662 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Very bad. Terrible! Don’t book this tour! 1. They called one night before to informed they don’t have enough your car to cater to the service at 8am when we booked the tour that starts at 8am. So we agreed to rescheduled to 9am. 2. At 8.57am we arrived at the meeting point, driver showed that he’s still at Brunei immigration which is at least 45mins to an hour away from the meeting point. 3. We called to the service centre, the attendant said 30mins driver can arrive when we knew the driver will not be here by then. When the travel agency could have suggested to cancel the trip and refund to us but they insisted on us waiting here for NOTHING! 4. True enough, 9.37am the driver still far away from the meeting point. So I called a few times the attendant from service centre of the agency dare not to pick up my call by then, when I called a few more times they have no choice but to pick up. 5. By 9.45am, I said if the trip isn’t happening please let us know and not by letting us wait here blindly. Then she called my partner instead to say they will arrange a full refund. • qrubyc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Niah Caves Exploration The caves were interesting and I learnt a lot ! My tour guide Charlie Sazali (from Asia Overland Tour) was really friendly and he shared a lot about Miri in general, the caves’ history and pointed out various animal sightings (bats, swallows, crickets and geckos) within the caves. We departed at 830am from hotel, had a 20-min indoor tour around the interpretation centre (like a mini museum for the Niah Caves as an introduction before our hike); there was some heavy rain so we had to wait a bit before we were allowed to begin our trek (at 11am); we exited the caves at 2.50pm and left Niah national park by 3.30pm. Lunch was slightly late due to our longer excursion (probably due to the rain delay) but it was really tasty and promptly served upon reaching the restaurant. Reached back hotel by 5.45pm. All in all - a great tour and wonderful tour guide ! Would definitely recommend! Note: quite a lot of walking to the caves on wooden plank walkway (3km) and within the caves (2km), and there will be the same walk back - so be prepared for a long walk! Wear shoes that are suitable for trekking / rough terrains and bring poncho in case of rain. Read more Written 27 September 2022

Introduction

Traveling from Brunei to Miri, Malaysia offers an opportunity to explore the beauty of two neighboring countries in Asia. Brunei, a small nation on the island of Borneo, is known for its rich Islamic heritage and pristine rainforest. On the other hand, Miri, located in the state of Sarawak in East Malaysia, offers bustling city life and a gateway to the wonders of Borneo.

Whether you’re a local or a traveler visiting Brunei, making the journey to Miri is a relatively straightforward process. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to go from Brunei to Miri. From researching your options to crossing the border and arriving in Miri, we will provide you with all the information you need for a seamless and enjoyable journey.

Before embarking on your trip, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with some key details. Brunei is a sovereign state located on the north coast of the island of Borneo, surrounded by Malaysia. It is known for its rich oil reserves, Islamic culture, and stunning natural scenery. Miri, on the other hand, is a coastal city and the second-largest city in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is a popular destination for its diverse culture, vibrant street markets, and proximity to beautiful national parks.

Now, let’s delve into the steps that will take you from Brunei to Miri. With a little planning and preparation, your journey will be smooth and unforgettable.

Step 1: Research

The first step in planning your journey from Brunei to Miri is to conduct thorough research. This will help you understand your options and make informed decisions. Here are some key aspects to consider:

  • Transportation Options: Research different modes of transportation available for traveling from Brunei to Miri. The most common options include buses, shared taxis, and private cars. Look for reputable transportation providers and compare their schedules, prices, and travel durations.
  • Travel Documents: Check the visa requirements for entering Malaysia , as well as any necessary travel documents. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Malaysia. If you’re planning a day trip, confirm whether a visa is required for short visits.
  • Border Regulations: Familiarize yourself with the border regulations between Brunei and Malaysia. Take note of the operating hours of the border crossing and any specific requirements for crossing, such as COVID-19 protocols or customs regulations.
  • Local Customs: Learn about the local customs and etiquette in both Brunei and Malaysia. This will help you adapt to the cultural norms and show respect to the locals during your journey.
  • Attractions and Activities: Research the attractions and activities available in Miri. Consider your interests and preferences, whether you enjoy exploring nature, visiting historical sites, or indulging in local cuisine. Make a list of must-visit places and plan your itinerary accordingly.

By conducting thorough research, you will gain valuable insights that will assist you in making informed decisions regarding transportation, documentation, border regulations, and local customs. This will ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to Miri, Malaysia.

Step 2: Choose a Mode of Transportation

Once you have completed your research, it’s time to choose the most suitable mode of transportation for your journey from Brunei to Miri. Consider the following options:

  • Bus: Taking a bus is a popular and affordable option for traveling between Brunei and Miri. There are several bus operators that provide regular services between the two destinations. Look for a reliable bus company that offers comfortable seating, air-conditioning, and a direct route to Miri. Check the bus schedules and duration of the journey to plan your trip accordingly.
  • Shared Taxi: Shared taxis, also known as “mini-vans” or “teksi sapu,” are another option for transportation from Brunei to Miri. These taxis typically wait at designated points near the border and depart when full. Shared taxis can be more expensive than buses, but they offer the advantage of flexibility and a potentially quicker journey.
  • Private Car: If you prefer more flexibility and independence, renting a car or hiring a private driver is an option worth considering. This will allow you to explore the route at your own pace and make stops along the way. However, keep in mind that you will need to handle the necessary paperwork, including obtaining the necessary permits for crossing the border with a rental car.

When choosing a mode of transportation, consider factors such as your budget, comfort preferences, travel duration, and desired level of flexibility. Take into account the convenience of the transportation options, availability of tickets or bookings, and the overall suitability for your travel needs.

Remember to plan your departure time accordingly, taking into consideration transportation schedules, border crossing times, and any potential delays. It’s always wise to leave some buffer time in case of unexpected circumstances.

By carefully considering the available transportation options and selecting the one that best fits your preferences and needs, you can ensure a comfortable and convenient journey from Brunei to Miri.

Step 3: Preparing for the Journey

  • Pack Wisely: Consider the duration of your trip and pack accordingly. Check the weather forecast for Miri and pack appropriate clothing. Don’t forget essentials such as toiletries, medication, travel adapters, and any necessary travel documents like your passport and visa.
  • Currency Exchange: Ensure that you have Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for your journey. Exchange your currency in advance or withdraw cash from ATMs in Brunei or Miri. It’s a good practice to carry some smaller denomination notes for convenience.
  • Stay Connected: Check your mobile phone’s network coverage and roaming options. Consider purchasing a local SIM card in Miri if you need reliable data and communication services during your stay.
  • Inform Your Accommodation: If you have booked accommodation in Miri, inform them about your expected arrival time. This will help them prepare for your check-in and ensure a smooth arrival process.
  • Food and Refreshments: Carry some snacks and water for the journey, especially if you’re traveling by bus or shared taxi. While there are rest stops along the way, having some provisions will come in handy in case of delays or hunger pangs.
  • Take Note of Emergency Contacts: Save important phone numbers, such as the local embassy or consulate, emergency services, and your accommodation’s contact details. This information will be useful in case of any unforeseen incidents or emergencies.
  • Cross-Border Requirements: Ensure that you have all the necessary documents required for crossing the border. This may include your passport, visa, and any specific travel permits or declarations. Double-check the border regulations to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Did you know

  • Trivia Leonard Nimoy was asked to allow his children to appear as extras but Nimoy refused to let his children be involved in show business. His son, Adam Nimoy , did grow up to become a television director, including a few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) .
  • Goofs Spock states that he and the guards could not even get close to the stray children because they knew the area too well. His tricorder should have been able to locate them in seconds since there were no other humanoid lifeforms present. It would have been a simple matter to locate Yeoman Rand with a tricorder as well.

Yeoman Rand : That little girl...

Mr. Spock : ...is at least three hundred years older than you are, Yeoman.
