Bob went above and beyond to make this tour possible. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Bob tell me facts of interest along the way. Walking among the Burro’s in Oatman was a unique treat. I cant wait to book another tour with Desert Wonder Tours.

We definitely recommend this tour! Our tour guide was very informative about the history of Kingman and super funny too! He made a ton of great suggestions that we are enjoying before our trip ends too. We will be doing more tours in the future! Thank you!

My mom and I had a wonderful time with Bob on our tour to the powerhouse and museum on Route 66 and the trip to the cavern was worth the drive. Bob was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information and history during our drive. It was also nice to hear about his own family history in the area.

The trip to Grand Canyon West/Skywalk was so relaxing and enjoyable. Bob was great to travel with and we would take one of his tours again. The Joshua tree forest was especially interesting and we even saw a roadrunner. Our lunch at the ranch was most enjoyable. I just wish I had gotten a picture of Cowboy Dan! Highly recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful time at Grand Canyon this weekend thanks to Bob. He was extremely accommodating and gave us a great tour of the Canyon. We also enjoyed our time at the cowboy ranch and singing cowboy Casey was amazing! Thanks a lot, Bob, for a great time!

This was one of the best times my wife and I had while on a quick trip to Vegas. It’s a nice way to get off the strip and do something out of the ordinary. The best part about this tour is the tour guide and their knowledge of all of the cool places you’ll see. The wineries were very welcoming and comforting as soon as we walked in. We practically had the places to ourselves. The wine very good and we actually bought a bottle to take home it was so good. The brewery was one of the best I’ve ever been too and I’m a huge craft beer guy. You’ll want to add this to your itinerary. Here’s the kicker, we had breakfast, got picked up right outside our hotel and we were back in Vegas around 2pm to still enjoy the rest of our day!

Very nice trip with great personalized service. Our guide Bob pointed out many interesting things along the way,and was very knowledgeable about the area. The lunch at the ranch was good. Other than the snack bar at the west rim there’s not much out in this area, It’s a nice place to stop. We also stopped at a Art Gallery that had a nice selection of reasonably priced items. Overall a nice day. I’d recommend this operation to my family and friends.

Bob was knowledgeable n very informative made the Grand Canyon an experience my husband n I will always remember cowboy Casey n lunch was great

What an awesome tour! Our tour guide, Bob, was great. You will see the beautiful desert and enjoyment of desert wineries. Lunch and brewery were excellent. I highly recommend this tour.

It was an awesome and fun experience. From the guide and the activity tour plus lunch and the cowboy entertainment was worth what i paid for. thank you for taking good care of us !!

I took my husband on a date with Bob at Desert Wonder tours. It was just what we needed! He picked us up and brought us through the beautiful desert and Joshua Trees. We went to Grand Canyon West, wow the breath taking views. We work a lot so it was wonderful to sit together and listen to Bobs stories and sit back! He also brought us to listen to singung Cowboy Kasey...what a fantastic time there! The Ranch was so amazing you have to find out for yourself! We also stopped by a wonderful Art Gallery. Book a tour with Bob and ket him treat you for the day, he is very attentintive! Thank you again for the tour. It was a date we will never forget!

Both Bob and Sarge were excellent. My wife and I could not have asked for a better tour. We thoroughly enjoyed each stop on both days. There was a small mix up on day one and Bob went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. His enjoyment in providing these tours shines though in both his wealth of information and even more impressive his personal interaction/conversation during drive time.

Sarge and Will did a great job with the tour, had our very own private comedy show LOL. Lots of great information on the tour as well as the KEEPERS OF THE WILD feeding tour, don't get gas in NV, etc. We will definitely recommend to others traveling through

We had a great experience riding and seeing the newborn Buffalo! Also, the lunch and entertainment of a singing cowboy was amazing! Great experience for the money.

Did this tour with Desert Wonder Tours, LLC that I booked through Viator/TripAdvisor. Although slight confusion in the booking over whether the Skywalk ticket was included (which it was not, but easily purchased as an add-on by Desert Wonder) yet my wife and I enjoyed an awesome tour with Bob as our guide. Bob was timely in picking us up directly from Blake Ranch RV Park, which was not even listed as a pick-up point. Bob took his time with us and accompanied us at each stop so that we could have all of our questions answered, and also he directed us to the right lines and access points for each stop. Lunch at the Grand Canyon Western Ranch was excellent, and we were made to feel right at home. I would highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours out of Kingman, AZ and if you happen to get Bob as your guide, consider it a bonus! Consider leaving your vehicle where you are staying, so that everyone in teh group could enjoy the tour. We were greeted with donuts, plus lunch and all entrance fees are included, and you can buy the Skywalk ticket just for those who dare to take the walk!

Through the excellent services of Desert Wonder Tours, LLC with Bob as our guide, my wife and I were picked up at 8am for a day we won’t soon forget. Our trip to the West Rim took us through the beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. We purchased just one ticket for the Skywalk, but it was absolutely awe inspiring. I purchased the offered photos and will remember the experience for a long time! Also visited Guano Point and it was just as inviting with awesome views. After a great lunch at Western Ranch we were dropped off at our RV at Blake Ranch RV Park. To visit the Grand Canyon with including the West Rim would be a huge mistake!

Bob & Sarge were great! We had 2 vans of people that went to see the Joshua Trees, the Western Grand Canyon Ranch and to Star Gaze! It was 24 seniors and Bob catered the trip to their needs! The service was first rate and the experience was top notch! The sky cleared and the stars came out for us on the mesa behind the ranch! A memorable evening for all!

My husband and I booked two tours with Desert Wonder Tours the weekend of August 19-21, 2022. The Oatman/Route 66 tour was wonderful! We love to visit different locations and this tour is highly recommended! Desert Wonders (Robert) did a great job of making the tour feel personalized. We were taken to locations familiar to Robert since he grew up in the area; we were given a bit of Robert's family history. With each location, we are allowed to see things on our own; we are not forced to stay with a group. Robert made the trip fun! We stopped in Kingman, AZ (Electric Car Museum), a rock shop that sells local fare, Cool Springs and we were taken up the Route 66 Sidewinder to our final location of Oatman, Arizona. Walking with the burros and watching an old-fashioned gunfight was a great end to the tour. Robert is an outstanding host - knowledgeable of the area/history, funny and friendly! Highly recommend the tour and the company to anyone who can visit!

My husband and I took two tours the weekend of August 19-21st. This is my review on the 2nd tour: London Bridge/English Village tour. It was only my husband and me on this tour and our driver was Ally. This trip was wonderful! The views on our way to Lake Havasu was beautiful! Ally was a wonderful tour guide, giving us local information as she took us to the different locations. London Bridge/English Village was breathtaking. It is a beautiful location. We spent some time walking around and then rode a ferry to a casino in California. This tour like the first is not rushed, you can take your time walking around and enjoying yourself. I would highly recommend this trip as well! I am ready to book the next one! Great job Desert Wonder Tours!

I did two tours with this company. The Oatman tour and the Grand Canyon Caverns tour. Both were excellent, the tour guide Robert was wonderful and thoughtful. He did not rush me through anything and was extremely flexible with my requests.

We had a great time with our guide Ali. We got to see some beautiful scenery, the Route 66 museum, a really neat roadside rock shop, along with the cool town of Oatman. Ali was very accommodating and we would definitely recommend her and this tour.

Bob's knowledge of the area and his relationships with the locals made the trip outstanding. We stopped at well know places but also at some local shops that were amazing. Definitely recommend Desert Wonder and will use if back in the area.

(Translated by Google) We did the Grand Canyon tour (West Rim-Eagle Point with Skywalk and Guano Point). Our really professional guide Bob! A kind, polite, affable and accommodating person. Plus the inclusive lunch at the ranch was really good! All surrounded by the historic "Arizona Casey" who sang and played his songs! What else to say ... THANK YOU! A nice experience!

Just one of those lovely days that happen now and again. The organization was superb with the personal input from Bob being accommodating and informative throughout. Was a long day but well worth it. Route 66 museum was very interesting and our helpful guide/driver gave us lots of information. Visited a truly iconic vineyard and then and excellent wine bar/bistro for nice food and a further wine education. Would definitely book this or another trip with them if this way in the future. Well done

We couldn’t have a better Gide, he was excellent and explained the whole time clear and detailed about the story of the caverns. The caverns were awesome, we all had a very good time. My teens loved it.

Entire tour was great. Our guide Brandon was friendly and awesome and shared tons of knowledgeable history with us.

Just back from a tour to Oatman in Arizona with Bob from Desert Wonder tours. It was amazing. Bob was very accommodating to our wishes and really looked after us in his beautiful tour bus. Can not recommend this company and this tour enough. Fantastic.

Lovely ride from the tour guide to the ranch. Gorgeous horseback ride through the Joshua trees with two genuine cowboys as guides. Delicious lunch with delightful musical and story-telling entertainment!

The whole trip was fantastic. Mike picked my wife and I up in Las Vegas and we went on a desert tour destination Kingman. We visited a museum along Route 66 wine tasting the Little Old Wine Maker with great stories and terrific wine. We finished up with more wine tasting and lunch at Reds some excellent beer at the local microbrewery. We felt Mike was our friend when we were dropped off.

Rocky start getting pickup time. Travel to the location was smooth, lunch options had a lot of variety. The bridge and area were amazing. The nice Ferry ride to the casino for lunch. Highly recommend the tour. Our driver and guide, Bob was very accommodating and knowledgeable.

Excellent from start to finish. Bob our driver was amazing. He structured the day to suit us. Would definitely use Desert Wonder Tours again.

Micheal our driver was vey good, friendly, helpful and informative. The experience was also very good, a great way to spend the day away from the strip!

Highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours to explore the local area. In particular the Winery & Distillery tour is great value for money and very enjoyable. Bob was wonderful to deal with in the lead up to the day and also a sensational tour guide for our trip from Las Vegas to the Kingman area and back. I was always excited for this tour in the lead up, but it very much exceeded our expectations and was an experience we couldn't wait to tell family and friends about. All venues visited on our tour were very welcoming with friendly staff who loved having a chat and sharing their stories.

Brandon seemed pretty cool. Knew a lot about where we were going. We really enjoyed the part of route 66 that went through the extremely curvy sections of the mountainous areas.

Had a great day at Eagle Point and Guano Point, lunch at the ranch, and a drive through the Joshua Forest. Our guide, Mike, gave us lots of information about the area, and answered all our questions.

Absolutely wonderful tour experience to Grand Canyon West. Our guide Michael was super, sharing historical stories and facts about the tour sites. Lunch with a singing cowboy was very entertaining and made for a great conclusion! Very memorable experience 👍

We had a wine and beer tasting tour. Mike was our driver and tour guide. He was amazing and knowledgeable. He made our experience all about us and how we preferred to make our memories. I highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours.

Our experience was wonderful we really enjoyed Oatman and also really enjoyed the trip through the mountains we learned a lot that we didn't know and our tour guide was wonderful.

I was terrified but the rangers help ease your nervousness. We had such a good time that day. My daughter is a daredevil which sparked this excursion. Try it. It’s great.

5 BEST Sahara Desert Tours from Fes, Morocco

Looking for the best sahara desert tours from fes read on for my top recommendations.

A group of four people with a tour guide riding on camels on the sand dunes in the Sahara deserts.

Visiting the Sahara Desert of Morocco was an absolute dream come true for me. It had always been at the top of my bucket list, and I knew it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

As we approached Merzouga, the village right on the edge of the Sahara desert dunes, the anticipation and excitement grew. The sight of the sand dunes rising out from the desert was surreal. I couldn’t believe that I was about to ride a camel through the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert!

Thankfully, going into the Sahara Desert absolutely lived up to expectation, and still continues to be one of my favorite travel memories, ever. If you’re visiting Morocco, you simply must put the Sahara desert on your itinerary.

What to Expect While You’re in the Sahara

A man holds the harness attached to the camel which is one of the best Sahara desert attractions.

Each of these Sahara desert tours from Fes has a very similar itinerary when you’re actually in the dunes. To save you time reading the same descriptions for each tour over and over, let me give you a full description here.

You’ll meet your desert camp hosts in Merzouga (the village right on the edge of the dunes) in the evening, usually a couple hours before sunset. Then, you’ll head off into the Erg Chebbi dunes (the name of the specific dunes in Morocco), riding a camel into the Sahara.

It will take about 1.5 hours to reach your camp on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes. There, you’ll witness the sunset either in the middle of the dunes or right at the camp.

When you arrive at camp, you’ll enjoy a delicious hot dinner – this dinner will be as good as any Moroccan meal you’ve eaten! An appetizing breakfast will be served in the morning too.

After dinner, your Berber guides will make a fire and play traditional music around the flames. Definitely don’t miss observing the stars in the middle of the dunes!

Finally, you’ll spend the night in your luxury desert tent. These are not your usual camping tents – they are well-designed, sturdy, and roomy tents, and sometimes have en-suite bathrooms, with running water, a bathroom, and electricity.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

➡️ my top tip for choosing a sahara desert tour.

My big tip for choosing a Sahara Desert tour is to dedicate a complete day to embracing the wonders of the Sahara Desert. Although an overnight stay can provide a remarkable experience on its own, if you are investing the time and effort to reach the desert, why not extend your stay and fully immerse yourself?

We loved our full day in the desert, and I’d recommend it to anyone who can make it work in their schedule.

The 4-day tour I listed above (#5 on the list) and the 3 day tour starting and ending in Fes (#2 on the list) both give you a full day to explore and play in the desert.

➡️ Booking Your Tour in Advance vs Booking in Fes

You do have the option to wait until you are actually in Fes to find a tour operator in the city (it won’t be hard, there are lots around) and haggle for the most affordable price there.

But it’s important to know that there are advantages and disadvantages to this. Obviously, you can certainly get a tour for a lower price when you’re haggling in Fes than booking online.

However, it also comes with some disadvantages. Online tour companies are much more committed to giving quality experiences to tourists since they are looking forward to receiving positive reviews.

The ones you’ll find in the city won’t care that much because they don’t rely on reviews for new travelers to book them, and your travel experience can really be affected by this.

In particular, if you are a solo female traveler, I would definitely book your Sahara desert tour from Fes online ahead of time, as there have been multiple reports of women being hassled by their guides on tours like these.

For such a bucket list experience, I think it’s worth making sure you get a great desert adventure.

A woman smiling at a dinner table in a glamping campground in the Sahara desert.

➡️ Small Group Tour vs Private Tour

This one is really down to personal preference. It’s really up to you and what’s available for the itinerary you want. For example, I could only find a private tour available for a 3-day tour (not 2 or 4 days).

I used to totally avoid any kind of group tour (after an experience in Cozueml where us and 500 other people were shuffled through the streets), I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy a quality small group tour.

We’ve now gone on a lot of small group tours in many countries we’ve visited, and the result has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve enjoyed connecting with fellow travelers from different corners of the world, and these interactions have often become highlights of our journeys.

Embracing the company of like-minded adventurers has brought an unexpected and delightful dimension to our travels.

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

Headscarf:  Beyond making you look very authentic, Moroccan headscarves are very helpful to protect your head from the sun, wind, and sand. You can get one in any marketplace in Morocco for around 50 dirhams ($5) – plus it makes a great souvenir from Morocco to bring home with you.

Your desert guides will help you tie the scarf in their traditional style.

Dress, kaftan or djallaba : Kaftan and djallabas are traditional Moroccan clothing (long “dress”-like outfits that both men and women wear) and are a great thing to pick up if you want to look SUPER legit in the desert.

Matthew is wearing a kaftan in our camel pictures and he looks absolutely bomb. (Wear shorts underneath and then hike up the kaftan a little bit – it wasn’t hard for him to sit on the camel wearing that outfit).

Jacket : The Sahara can get chilly at night, even after a hot day. I’d plan to bring a light jacket if you’re visiting during the spring or summer. However, nights get downright cold during the winter, (lows in the 30’s and 40’s) so I’d bring a heavier coat and possibly other winter gear (hat, gloves).

Sunscreen : No explanation necessary, but definitely don’t forget it. Matthew always uses  this sunscreen stick , and I wear this facial  sunscreen for sensitive skin  under my makeup.

Something for motion sickness : No matter what tour you take out to the Sahara, you’re going to have to ride on the winding roads of Morocco. These roads made me suuuuuuuuper nauseous (I actually  threw up out the window  as we were going through switchbacks in the Atlas Mountains).

All that to say, I’d highly recommend something for motion sickness.

While  dramamine  is a tried and true option, I recently tried out the  Relief Band for motion sickness  and it has worked impressively well!

You wear this device like a watch on your wrist, and it sends out little pulses of electricity to stimulate your vagus nerve. You’ll feel just a little buzz in your wrist and hand (its nothing like getting shocked), and is extremely effective.

An E-Sim Card: I like having fast, high speed data when we’re traveling out of the country, and I recently found a new service that for getting inexpensive data while traveling.

Instead of purchasing a local SIM card when arriving in a country, I’m now using an e-sim card from Airalo. I’ve used a lot of different methods in the past to get data when traveling internationally, and let me tell you, buying an e-sim card is EASILY the most affordable, fast, and convenient option.

Sahara Desert Tours FAQs

A man and woman stand together romantically in a sunset on a Sahara desert

Can You Do A Day Trip to the Sahara Desert from Fes?

It takes 8-9 hours to reach Merzouga from Fes, so it’s not possible to do a day trip to the Sahara desert from Fes. You’ll for sure need 2 days minimum to do an ideal desert tour.

Don’t worry, the extra time is definitely worth it!

What is the Best Month to Visit the Sahara?

As one would expect, the Sahara Desert can become scorching hot during the summer months. From May to September, temperatures soar into the mid-90s to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35-40 degrees Celsius), with nighttime lows ranging from 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit (20-25 degrees Celsius).

In winter, highs generally hover in the 60s-70s Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius), while lows drop to the low 40s Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). If you plan to visit during this season, it’s essential to pack warm coats, cozy pajamas, a beanie, and gloves, as the tents lack heating facilities.

Undeniably, the optimal time to explore the Sahara desert is during the spring and fall when temperatures are more moderate and the heat is less intense. Nonetheless, regardless of the time of year, you can still have an incredible experience in the Sahara desert, as long as you come prepared for the prevailing weather conditions.

Is It Worth Going to the Sahara Desert?

Without a doubt, the answer is a resounding yes! Including a visit to the Sahara desert in your Morocco itinerary is unquestionably worth the time and effort you’ll spend. This surreal and epic bucket list adventure will be one you never forget!

The Wrap Up: Sahara Desert Tours from Fes

All of these tours are incredible adventures with welcoming and knowledgeable guides, so it’s really just a matter of choosing which option works for your itinerary. Include one of these excursions out to the Sahara desert as part of your visit to Fes !

A day out at Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with one look at this ancient city, you can see why. Approximately dating back to the 17 th century, this mudbrick ksar is an example of pre-Saharan natural construction that once served as a Sahara trading post. It’s since been revived by Hollywood, so you might just recognise it from some pretty big films – does The Mummy , Lawrence of Arabia or Gladiator ring any bells? Before leaving, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal courtesy of the women of the Tawesna Association at a nearby teahouse.

You’ll be taken to the Erg Chebbi  sand dunes, the largest dunes in Morocco. Watch as they move with the wind and change hue depending on the time of day. After experiencing the hubbub of Marrakech, fall asleep to peace and quiet under the grandeur of a full desert starry night. If you’re going to visit the largest hot desert in the world, we think you might as well stay the night.

You’ll get a chance to experience the region’s produce after a morning sojourn through the 400 meters high sandstone canyons as you sit down for a picnic provided by the members of the local Amazigh Women’s Association. Savour local specialities, from the country-favourite mint tea to speciality bread with olive oil; it’s the perfect Moroccan meal .

Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is located in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kilometres across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya. It's the world's largest hot desert, and the third-largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What's the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower. You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter. Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It’s super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don’t get quite as cold. Although one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life. The mammals that live in the Sahara range from Saharan cheetahs, dromedary camels and desert foxes to gazelles, ostrich, hyrax and African wild dogs. Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor. Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion and the Saharan silver ant as well as over 90 species of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for a Sahara Desert tour?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are Intrepid's Sahara Desert trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The Best Atacama Desert Tours: 15 Stunning Adventures Await

15 brilliant Atacama Desert tours for unforgettable adventures. Explore Chile’s stunning destination.

Let me cut to the chase. Chile ’s Atacama Desert is incomparably beautiful.

Imagine walking along the tranquil salt lakes as the jagged landscape of purple-hued mountains creates an ethereal atmosphere. Add the 300 nights a year of perfect stargazing conditions and you’re in for a real treat.

How does wandering through the geothermal hot pockets at El Tatio’s Geysers sound? Or maybe a jaw-dropping sunset over Valle de la Luna ? Whatever the case, these Atacama tours will make your eclectic getaway a touch more memorable.

Ready or not, Atacama awaits!

Tupiza to Uyuni Tour - Sunrise at the Bolivian Salt Flats

Uyuni Salt Flats & San Pedro de Atacama 3-Day Tour

Isla Incahuasi, Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia-6

How does a Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert tour all in one go sound? This is a 3-day tour that ticks all the boxes, from exploring Salar de Uyuni to the emerald green Laguna Verde .

The first half of the journey is a Bolivian whirlwind as you explore Colchani and Salar de Uyuni, ending off at Ajenchi Town. Soak up Bolivia’s industrial past at the Train Cemetery and admire a sunset producing a myriad of colours reflecting off the pure-white salt flats of Uyuni.

How about popping over to the flamingo-filled waters of Cañapa Laguna? Perhaps you want to see the unique tree-like rock formations in the Siloli Desert? Whatever the case, you’ll discover over 20 of Bolivia and the Atacama Desert’s top attractions in three days.

You should note that the tour excludes Isla Incahuasi and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve entry fees.

Piedra Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Solar Full-Day Tour

This Atacama Desert day tour is brimming with flora, fauna, and picturesque lakes. Start your journey with a delectable breakfast as you overlook the sulphur-lined Miscanti lagoon. Volcanoes surround Laguna Miscanti y Miñiques, creating a colossal atmosphere.

Next up, the lake of Piedro Rojas Salars offers an unimaginable cacophony of colours due to the variety of minerals within the water. It can freeze over in winter, which makes a cool contrast.

Visit Piedro Rojas in winter, as the lake’s lower water levels make the colours even more vivid.

And if that’s not enough, you’ll also pop past Chile’s largest salt lake, Salar de Atacama. If flamingo spotting is on your bucket list, you can definitely tick it off here, as Laguna Chaxa is home to three unique species.

San Pedro de Atacama Etno-Astronomical Tour

Stargazing Milky Way, Atacama Desert, Chile-

No Atacama experience is complete without a night gazing into the starry sky above . So, get the most out of the Atacanemo sky on this astronomical tour .

Start off by getting a deeper scientific understanding of the universe. Get ready to understand the cosmos and how to differentiate a planet from a star. And don’t worry, you’re not just blindly looking up. There are telescopes to help guide you.

Visit between April and September for the best stargazing conditions.

Science isn’t the only perspective you’ll learn more about, and your tour guide will also explain the ancient inhabitants’ ways of seeing the stars.

Valle de la Luna Sunset Tour

Valle de la Luna

There’s only one thing that beats seeing Valle de la Luna, and that’s seeing this magical landscape at sunset.

This Moon Valley tour allows you to explore a land where the wind carves the Martian-like landscape into ethereal formations.

Watch the Grand Dunes ripple in the wind and gaze at Las Tres Maria’s as the sun casts them in a golden glow. I’d usually recommend visiting Valle de la Luna at sunrise (to avoid the sunset crowds). But this is a private tour and your guide will take you to a secret spot that not many people know.

Atacama Desert Tour: 3-Day Special Activity Combo

Salar de Quisquiro

Pack four of Atacama’s top tourist attractions into a 3-day experience like no other. Each tour departs from San Pedro de Atacama daily, so accommodation isn’t included, but transportation is.

From a geyser that erupts every six minutes to the biggest fumaroles in the Northern Geyser field, El Tatio is a bubbling world of sulphur awaiting discovery.

Then there’s the expansive fields of white salt flats in the High Altiplano. Some top ones you’ll visit include Salar de Pujsa, with its wildlife-filled wetland and the peaceful lakeside of Salar de Quisquiro.

And the opportunities don’t end there, as you’ll visit the salt mountain range of Vallecito and the hidden lagoons of Baltinache . What more could you ask for?

The Perfect Three-Day Atacama Itinerary

Hidden Lagoons of Baltinache Tour

Julianna Barnaby, Cejar Lagoon, Atacama Desert, Chile

You’ve probably seen those epic videos of someone walking into the turquoise waters of a small lagoon as the sky offers a tapestry of colour. Do you wonder where on earth you can find these picturesque lagoons?

Wander no more because this Baltinache tour will take you to seven remote lagoons every Instagram model tries to photograph. Although the tour excludes entry to the lagoons ($11.85 cash), it does include transportation and a guide who’ll make the experience truly unique.

Besides, who doesn’t want the chance to float in like a cork in a crystal-clear lagoon with white sand surrounding you?

Guided Buggy Tour Through the Atacama Desert

Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

If you’re an adrenaline seeker looking to take on the Atacama’s rugged terrain, then this buggy tour is the one. Be it sand, mountains, or rivers. Nothing will stop your 4×4 vehicle in this seemingly never-ending landscape.

Want to pair a little adventure with some cultural significance? Your buggy tour will stop at two archaeological sites — you can try, but your GPS won’t find these hidden destinations.

All-in-all, you’ll traverse 31 miles of towering sand dunes, steep mountain roads (if you can call them roads), and trickling riverbeds.

San Pedro de Atacama Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Atacama

Start your day early with unprecedented views of the Atacama Desert from above on this sunrise hot air balloon ride .

Watching the reddish glow of the sun begin to peak from behind the Licancabur Volcano is a sight few get to enjoy. And it’s a hundred times better when you’re 1,000 feet in the sky.

Your chariot of the sky (humour me) rises between the Andean Mountains and Domeyco Cordillera. As the sun kisses the ground below with rays of light, you’ll see it all, from Death Valley and Salt Mountain Range to the Atacama Lagoon and Moon Valley.

And just before you think the start of the day couldn’t get any better, it does. After landing, you’ll feast on a fresh medley of local cuisine. It’s sure to be the best breakfast you’ll have in Chile.

Geysers del Tatio Half-Day Tour From San Pedro de Atacama

Sunrise El Tatio Geysers, Atacama Desert, Chile

Get ready to see the natural fireworks that Rodolfo poignantly calls the El Tatio Geysers at sunrise. This half-day tour offers you a short but sweet opportunity to admire the glistening minerals in the bubbling and steaming waters of El Tatio’s fumaroles.

The tour starts with a sunrise hike around the northern geyser fields. The bouts of steam and twinkling minerals throughout the walk are sure to knock you out of your early-morning drowsiness. After a generous breakfast, the second hike of the day takes you to the traditional village of Machuca.

This old Andean village still builds its homes (of which there are only 20) using traditional techniques. In other words, you’ll also learn about the communities that still live within this harsh landscape of El Tatio.

Chile’s Atacama Desert Tour With Canyoning & Trekking

Julianna-Barnaby-Valle-de-Luna-Atacama-Desert-Chile.jpg

Are you looking to build up a sweat and test your limits? Then, one of the best Atacama tours for you has to be this canyoning experience .

Get ready to descend a towering cliff face with a raging waterfall alongside you. I know it sounds pretty dangerous, but trust me, it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You’ll get to do four rappels throughout the day. And don’t worry. A qualified guide will help you every step of the way.

You’ll take turns climbing up to the top of the canyon and rappelling back down. So, in your off time, you can rest on the sandy banks or dip in the refreshing — albeit cold — river.

Atacama Red Rocks & Altiplano Lagoons Day Trip

South America Travel Itinerary - Dont forget the Atacama Desert

Book this Altiplano day trip to visit the Tropic of Capricorn and venture into the red-laden landscape of the Aguas Calientes Salt Flat. You’ll enjoy an hour-and-a-half walk past the iconic Piedras Roja.

During the trip, you might spot the rainbow of colourful minerals cascading down Volcano Capur. But a guarantee is a visit to the most iconic lakes in the area, including Chaxa, Miscanti, and Miñiques.

On the way back from the Piedra Rojas, you’ll stop by Socaire village. Here, you can snap some photos of the 700-year-old and the sun setting over the Incan terrace fields of the village.

Atacama Desert Astrophotography Tour

Stargazing Milky Way

Atacama Desert stargazing is always on the agenda, especially when you consider it’s a region at the forefront of astronomical research. With locations like ALMA and Paranal, taking an Atacama Desert observatory tour only makes sense.

This astrophotography tour is relatively new on the block, but it’s the perfect way to admire the night sky and snap some memorabilia simultaneously. From visiting the ACT Observatory to sipping refreshing aperitivo, it’s a memory that will last a lifetime.

And you’ll take two professional photos home. Could you ask for much more?

Atacama Fat Biking Tour

Drone Shots, High Altiplano, Atacama Desert, Chile

While everyone is heading to the usual tourist attractions, how about a guided bike ride through the Atacaman landscape? You won’t see the bubbling geysers at El Tatio or the calming lakes of the higher Atacama Basin, but at least you’ll be able to experience the land at your own speed.

The tour departs by car from Iquique in the afternoon and arrives in the middle of the desert just before sunset. This provides the perfect weather for the meandering journey through the region’s dunes.

The tour doesn’t include food, which isn’t ideal, but as far as ways to explore the Atacama go, it’s one of the best.

Multi-Day Tour in San Pedro de Atacama

Sunset-Laguna-Tebinquinche-Atacama-Desert-Chile

If you want to enjoy all the best things in the Atacama Desert without a worry in the world, then this multi-day tour is for you. The adventure spreads across four days for your convenience.

You can entice your inner explorer with guided tours to Valle de la Luna, Rainbow Valley, Atacama Salt Flat, Piedras Rojas, the Altiplanic lagoons, and El Tatio Geysers. And to put the cherry on top, you’ll also embark on an astronomic tour at Ayllu de Cucuter.

You’ll also enjoy all your meals from the tour agency, including all the park entrance fees.

Salar de Uyuni & Altiplano Cordillera Traveller Tour

Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

If you cross the border to Bolivia and want a truly exceptional experience, I highly recommend booking this Cordillera Traveller tour . My first day on the tour was a bit of a mix-up, as the booking office made a mistake, but my guide, Walter, was excellent.

The tour focuses on the Altiplano region, which happens to be the widest point of the Andean Mountains. One of the highlights of the tour has to be the visits to the pre-Columbian cities like Chirp.

These cities encapsulate just how powerful and significant the Incan Empire was. There are even Incan ruins at Licancabur Volcano, which you might visit if you choose it as a part of your tour package.

Practical Tips for Exploring the Atacama Desert Tours

  • Valle de la Luna gets extremely busy. If you’re looking for a free-to-enter, quieter destination, consider Ckamur Valley.
  • If you want an all-inclusive resort that includes tours of the Atacama Desert, consider booking a stay at Nayara Alto Atacama .
  • Not all the tours depart from San Pedro de Atacama or include hotel pick-up. Make sure you read the tour description fully before booking.

Experience the #1 Ranked Outdoor Activity on our Scottsdale Jeep Tour

Come see why TripAdvisor named our guide-led Sonoran Desert Jeep tours as Scottsdale’s 2021 #1 ranked outdoor activity. Our professional tour guides are scholars and entertainers who have helped us achieve Viator’s 2020 ‘Badge of Excellence’ for meeting the highest tour operator quality standards.

When you think of the word “desert,” you probably imagine a barren wasteland devoid of any form of life. However, with hundreds of species of plants and animals, the Sonoran Desert is the most bio-diverse desert in North America—teeming with all it has to offer.

On our guide-led Sonoran Desert Jeep tours, you will see and learn about the stunning scenery that you saw in the popular old Western movies stretched out around you in full-color panoramic views.

Where will you be going? We are permitted to operate our off-road vehicle tours in the Sonoran Desert portion of the scenic Tonto National Forest adjacent to the northeast border of Scottsdale, Arizona. Since our tours are entirely on federal lands where development is prohibited, you will have the opportunity to see the desert as local Native Americans experienced it for hundreds of years before the Valley was settled in the late 1800s.

Whether you are here on vacation, a corporate event, for a bachelorette party, or any other occasion, our fleet of open-air vehicles are modified to carry 6, 7, or 14 passengers each. We can accommodate groups of all sizes for any occasion. For groups of 50 guests or more, please call our office.

Check out our guide-led Sonoran Desert Jeep tour options below:

3-HOUR GUIDE-LED, SONORAN DESERT JEEP TOUR

Our 3-hour Jeep tour is a low-speed, bumpy sightseeing tour of the scenic Sonoran Desert via the Tonto National Forest. Your daytime tour will trek through spectacular Jeep trails overseeing the historic Great Western Trail leading to the Verde River, where guests sometimes catch a glimpse of our roaming wild horse population.

Your professional tour guide, who is a certified off-road driver and the only driver throughout the duration of your Jeep tour, will teach about the Sonoran Desert flora, wildlife, Arizona history, and Native American ethnobotany. There will also be plenty of photo opportunities throughout this tour. Since our permitted trails are connected to Scottsdale, this tour guarantees the most trail time at the best price.

YOUR TOUR, YOUR WAY – PRIVATE TOURS

Please note that if you book a Public Tour, your group may be scheduled to ride in a vehicle with other passengers. If you would like to guarantee an off-road vehicle for your party only and tour guide, we have Private Tour options available for groups up to 7 and up to 14 persons. What to Expect on a White Desert Tour in Egypt

While backpacking through Egypt , I always wanted to go far out into the desert and see what the Sahara is all about. I read about the desert oasis with palm trees and hot springs. So, we asked around. The Siwa Oasis was only open for day visitors, and then we were told the Bahariya Oasis, also known as the White Desert, is closed for tourism.

Struggling to figure out what to do, we kept asking around. Some told us the White Desert was possible. Confused, we called a few other tour operators to ask and determined that the government has officially shut down the White Desert for tourism when accessed from Cairo (Bahariya). However, it is open for tourism if accessed from Farafra, the route which nearly nobody takes. Several guides told us; however, we could still get in.

This was Egypt. So we went. After a half-day of travel, we arrived with a group of locals in Bawiti, the heart of the Bahariya Oasis. It is where our tour began.

While the pyramids and temples may be the main attraction, don’t miss out on one of Egypt’s most impressive landmarks, the White Desert. This was one of our most memorable adventures in Egypt. Falling asleep beneath the stars each night and waking up with nobody around. We were ready to explore amazing sandstone formations, a highlight of our trip.

With over nine months of travel in Africa, we had been to several deserts at this point in our trip. Besides the Namib Desert in Namibia, the White Desert in Egypt is our second favorite and the most picturesque desert in Africa.

Bahariya Oasis Egypt: New White Desert

White Desert Tour Details

Bahariya Oasis: New White Desert

Tours to the White Desert start from Bawiti. Located next to the Bahariya Oasis, this town is one of the largest in Western Egypt. Tours are either two or three days.

The best way to experience this region is on a full three-day tour. Two nights are spent sleeping under the stars in Bedouin style. The tour is a great combination of different sites, from a salt lake, hot springs, desert oasis, the Black Desert, and of course, the White Desert. Most tours will cater to what you want to see.

We recommend spending as much time as you can in the White Desert, the clear highlight of the trip.

How to Get to the White Desert

Bahariya Formation: The Black Desert

Bawiti is the main town in the region and is easily accessible from Cairo. Tours can also originate from Farafra; however, this is a much more difficult town to get to. There are three options for transport to Bawiti, a five-hour drive from Cairo:

  • Private car  – car hires can be arranged by tour guides in Cairo or in Bawiti. It is also possible to go to the microbus station and get in a private taxi with four or five people. Costs can range from 90 E£ (per person) to 300 E£ (per vehicle).
  • Microbus  – From Moneib Station (Giza metro line two), it is a ten-minute walk to the microbus station. Turn left outside of the station and continue straight until a large highway overpass. You’ll find a small microbus station on the left side of the street underneath the overpass. This is the only station with a direct bus to Bawiti. The cost is 80 E£ per person.
  • Tourist bus  – large tourist buses leave from Turgomen Station in Cairo. Upper Egypt Bus Company departs at 7 am, 10 am, and 3 pm to Bawiti. When the White Desert was “closed,” these buses were running irregularly. However, we were told specifically to not take a tourist bus. Military Police stop the tourist buses to get passport info, and would apparently warn tourists to not enter the White Desert. We took the Microbus and never got stopped by the police. The cost is between 70 E£ and 100 E£.

How to Book a White Desert Tour

White Desert Egypt

Tours can be booked from Cairo or by contacting local tour guides in Bawiti. Many operators based in Cairo are just a middleman, booking a tour for a guide located in Bawiti. We always try to book directly with the guide, not only to get ourselves a better price, but they often get more money out of it that way.

Prices were all over the place. We were not sure if some were more “luxurious” than others, but they all sounded the same. However, some tours were triple the price of others. It is possible to show up in Bawiti and find a local tour guide. This allows you to personally meet the people involved and see the quality of the vehicle before any payment has occurred.

After hours of research and speaking to dozens of tour guides, we booked with a local guide in Bawiti. He did not ask us to promote his business, but we honestly have to. He was incredible. Our guide was a man named Hamada Kaddora. Based in Bawiti,  Hamada speaks fluent English and has 15 years of experience in desert tours. The tour he took us on is top-notch, with excellent Bedouin food. His contact is +20 100 2565934.

Cost: Prices start from $125 USD per person for 3-day tours. Prices can vary based on tour specifics.

White Desert Sites to See

White Desert Egypt Tour: Sandboarding

  • Bahariya Oasis  – is one of the largest oases in Egypt with several springs and date palm farms.
  • Farm Tour  – an organic farm with dates, guava, olives, mint, alfalfa, and more.
  • Salt Lake  – is a beautiful salt lake with nice reflections.
  • Pyramid Mountain  – is one of the largest dinosaur fossils ever found there.
  • Black Desert  – drive through the black desert and a quick stop at a viewpoint to take in the odd-looking colors.
  • Bedouin Village –  lunch break.
  • Agbit  – stunning landscape filled with Egypt’s version of Monument Valley.
  • Gezell Valley  – a large valley that once was an oasis with a few remaining palm trees.
  • Green Spring  – a spring in the middle of the desert.
  • Acacia Tree  – the only tree in the White Desert National Park, this 500-year-old Acacia is still growing.
  • New White Desert  – vibrant white rock and stunning rock formations.
  • Old White Desert  – more yellow in color than the New White Desert.
  • Crystal Mountain  – not a mountain, but this small hill has crystals inside the rock.
  • Sandboarding  – a fun finish to the trip.

Safety in the White Desert

Bahariya Oasis Egypt: Old White Desert

Safety in Egypt is a concern and there is no way to avoid this topic. Facts speak for themselves. One of the 2015 events was directly related to this region. Several tourists were on tour in the Western Desert. They went off track and unfortunately, they were in the same vicinity as a terrorist and kidnapping situation. The Egyptian military mistakenly killed 12 tourists.

Since this occurred, most of the Western Desert, including trips to the White Desert and Siwa Oasis closed. Siwa was still closed for overnight visits as of mid-2017. White Desert trips are allowed, yet there are occasional issues with the military stopping all visits to the desert. This was a horrible tragedy that led to a huge decrease in tourism.

Our visit to the desert went smoothly and without any issues. We did not feel threatened or harmed in any way. We recommend checking with locals on the situation as it can change, but in late 2016 it was safe to visit the White Desert.

What to Bring

  • Clothing for hot days
  • Layers for chilly evenings, a light jacket
  • Most tours include all food, water, and camping gear

That’s It – we hope you have a wonderful White Desert Adventure!

Our 5-day tour to the desert will begin in the city of Agadir. We’ll have stops along the way to see the sights on our way to Marrakech. A local guide will show us around Marrakech and tell us about its history. We will visit the Saadian Tombs, Menara Garden, and Bahia Place. This is where Sultan Ahmad al Mansur and his family are buried. We will also see the Koutoubia Mosque and the Jemaa El-Fnaa square. Street entertainers like snake charmers do shows there. After that, we’ll go to the Majorelle Garden. The latter is a lively garden with art from Andalusia and other interesting things. Finally, we will take you to your hotel.

Day 2: Marrakech to Boumalne Dades

On this day of our 5-day desert tour from Agadir , we will go to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou . On the way, we’ll go through Tizi-N-Tichka. We’ll see some beautiful views and, if you’re interested, go to an Argan oil company. The next place we’ll go is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. It’s also a trade path that links Marrakech to the Sahara. In that spot, movies from Gladiator and Game of Thrones were shot. Filmmakers come from all over the world to shoot on it. At the end of your Kasbah trip, we’ll go to Ouarzazate to see the Atlas Studios.

After that, we’ll go to the Rose Valley, where every May the Rose Festival is held. We will go to Skoura at the end of the day and then to Dades, where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Boumalne Dades to Merzouga desert

After breakfast, we’ll start our 5-day tour from Agadir to the desert of Merzouga . Prior to that, we will go to Tinghir’s oasis and stop at the Todgha Gorges. Walking around the slopes between 300-meter-high rocks is free time for you. People who like to rock climb come from all over the world to this place. After that, we’ll go to the Berber town of Touroug to see a clothes company. Following that, we go to Jorf to discover an old method for watering palm trees. After that, we’ll go to Erfoud.

The Merzouga desert will be our destination by the end of the day. After riding camels over the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, you’ll spend the night in real Berber camp. At night, you can listen to Berber music played by locals while looking up at the beautiful stars.

Day 4: Merzouga to Ouarzazate

On the fourth day of our 5-day trip through the desert from Agadir , we will go back to Ouarzazate. Following breakfast and shower, you will ride your camels back to where you began your trip to continue your journey. We’ll stop in Rissani on the way to check out its old market and see what it has to offer. We will then go to Alnif, Tazarine, and Nkob. That’s where we’ll have lunch before going to the Draa Valley. It has the largest river in Morocco. During our trip, we will also stop to enjoy the stunning views of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. When we finally get to Ouarzazate, we’ll take you to your hotel.

Day 5: Ouarzazate to Agadir

Today is the last day of your 5-day tour in Morocco . We will take you back to Agadir. We are going to stop at Taznakht. The Berber people in this area are known for making carpets and other crafts that you can see there. After that, we’ll go to Taliouine, which has a saffron field. Before going to Taroudant village. It’s also called “Little Marrakech” because it looks a lot like Marrakech. We will be able to take a walk of the old Medina. The last stop on our 5-day desert tour will be the city of Agadir.

Unearth Hidden Gems: Top Desert Destinations for the Ultimate Adventure Seeker

  • Deserts offer unique and unforgettable travel experiences.
  • The Sahara and Atacama deserts are two of the world’s most extraordinary deserts.
  • Each desert destination brings distinct cultures, wildlife, and adventures.
  • Traveling to the desert can result in transformative personal experiences.

Immerse Yourself in the Vast Sahara

The Sahara Desert, the world’s largest hot desert, spans an enormous area of 3.6 million square miles ( 9.4 million square kilometers) – almost the size of the United States. The Sahara offers a vast playground for adventurous souls. You can experience camel trekking under the starlit sky in Morocco or uncover ancient civilization’s secrets in Egypt. Don’t miss the chance to witness the ethereal beauty of sunrise or sunset over the sand dunes, which is truly a sight to behold.

Experience the Unearthly Atacama

If the Sahara is an endless ocean of sand, the Atacama Desert in Chile stands as the testament to Earth’s extremes. It is the driest place on Earth, with some parts receiving less than 0.004 inches (0.01 millimeters) of rain annually. Yet, this extreme environment boasts unique lunar-like landscapes, geysers, salt flats, and even pink flamingos. At night, Atacama transforms into a stargazer’s paradise, with a clear, unpolluted sky offering a spectacular celestial spectacle.

Uncover the Soul of the Desert

As French photographer and desert enthusiast Benoit Cezard once said, “The desert sharpens the senses, purifies the soul, and offers a perfect opportunity for reflection and meditation.” There’s something transformative about the desert’s raw and unassuming beauty. Whether it’s the sensation of sand sifting through your fingers or the deafening silence only interrupted by the wind’s whisper, desert travel connects you with your inner self like no other journey can.

Discover the Mystic Arabian Desert

The Arabian Desert, stretching across the majority of the Arabian Peninsula, is the third largest desert in the world, rich with cultural heritage and natural beauty. It houses some of the most luxurious desert resorts globally, making it an excellent choice for those seeking an opulent oasis retreat.

You can enjoy a diverse range of activities from dune bashing, camel trekking , to witnessing traditional Bedouin life. The Empty Quarter or Rub’ al Khali, the largest continuous sand desert in the world, offers mesmerizing views of towering sand dunes.

Explore the Surreal Salar de Uyuni

While not a typical desert, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the world’s largest salt flat, presents a desert-like landscape that’s nothing short of surreal. Following a rain shower, this vast expanse turns into a gigantic mirror, reflecting the sky and creating an illusion of infinity. It’s a photographer’s dream and a bucket-list destination for any avid traveler.

Concluding Thoughts

The timeless allure of the world’s top desert destinations offers a unique kind of adventure. The vast emptiness of the desert, coupled with its intriguing, often harsh yet beautiful landscapes, gives travelers a refreshing perspective and deeper appreciation for Mother Earth’s diversity. Be it the warm sands of the Sahara, the dry lands of the Atacama, the rich culture of the Arabian desert, or the surreal Salar de Uyuni, every desert has a unique story to tell. All you have to do is listen.

One response to “Unearth Hidden Gems: Top Desert Destinations for the Ultimate Adventure Seeker”

Kevin, your account of navigating the Arabian Desert without a guide is riveting! It reminded me of my own trek in the Rub’ al Khali. Just curious, did you encounter any Fennec Foxes on your journey? I found them to be surprisingly friendly! I think it’s important for other readers to be aware of the extreme temperature fluctuations – it’s not just the daytime heat that’s challenging, but the freezing cold nights too. And let’s not forget the importance of locating water sources. Have you considered writing about desert survival techniques? It could be a valuable addition. Lastly, how did you manage to maintain your sense of direction during sandstorms? I found that to be the most challenging part of my journey. Looking forward to your response and keep up the great storytelling!

Good To Know About Your Egypt Desert Tour

Egypt Desert Tours

Essentially, Egypt   desert tours can bring you face to face with 97% of Egypt. The Sahara Desert which for thousands of years has captured the imagination of man consists of vast dunes and ravines, impassible in parts to all but the hardiest of desert peoples.

Even though Egypt has long been envied for its rich, fertile agricultural lands near the Nile, most people around the world still tend to associate the country with the Sahara Desert.

The Western Sahara Desert in Egypt is the most popular draw for those embarking on Egypt desert tours, and it is an expanse of desert that encompasses an area roughly the size of Texas. It is a rugged land that guards its mysteries jealously.

Egypt Desert Tours – Don’t Take Risks

It might be tempting to just hire a vehicle and take off into the sands, but this is very ill-advised for several reasons.

First and foremost, Egypt desert tours are designed to allow travelers a chance to experience the vastness of the desert under safe conditions. The desert is, in fact, deadly to those inexperienced in navigating and surviving in a desert environment. No one should take it upon themselves to venture too far from civilization unless it is in the course of their tour.

The second reason is one of respect. Among Egypt’s greatest natural treasures are the artifacts of civilizations that have long since faded away. These artifacts are found scattered throughout the desert and the Ministry of Antiquities goes to great lengths in order to protect them.

Because of the concentration of these treasures, and also the historical significance of the treasures in the Sahara desert, it’s required in most cases that those venturing off the beaten path have a permit issued by the Ministry. However, if you book one of our Egypt Desert tours, no such permit is required since we take care of any and all formalities.

It is worth keeping in mind that during Egypt’s long history, many of the country’s prized cultural artifacts have been looted by foreigners. Egypt desert tours allow tourists to view these sites and artifacts far out in the desert, but in a way that does not disrupt the science of archaeology or insult the Egyptian people by destroying their history.

Sahara desert tours in Egypt, because of their popularity, are usually available at fairly inexpensive rates. The real bonus of these tours is the fact that you get a guide who can point out all the subtleties of the desert environment, while at the same time helping you to appreciate the culture and history of this incredible land and its many diverse and proud peoples!

Sahara Desert Tours of All Shapes and Sizes

Egypt’s desert areas offer some of the finest traveling experiences in the world, but it takes some background information and a great deal of knowledge to know where to go and what to see. Whether you want to experience life in the oases, or whether you are longing to spend unforgettable nights under the starry desert sky, our expert guides can make sure you have the experience of a lifetime.

Hop on board an air-conditioned 4×4 vehicle; climb on a quad bike, or jump on a camel, and surrender yourself to the magic of Egypt desert tours.

In fact, it’s the only full-day desert tour that we really feel will blow your socks off in Qatar! Clocking in at around 7 to 8 hours, there’s never a dull moment. Your tour will start off with your experienced desert driver/guide picking you up at your hotel lobby.

No need to deal with planning extra transport – just bring an open mind and clothing appropriate for the desert climate (more below in our guide)!

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure Time: Between 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Includes:  Certified desert driver in 4X4 air-conditioned vehicle, insurance, bottled water and tea, visit local camel camp, short camel ride, dune bashing, inland sea visit (Khor al udaid)

While full-day tours are certainly a load of entertainment, they’re not for everyone. Whether you have a busier schedule or just don’t feel like committing to a longer tour, you have plenty of fantastic alternatives.

The Private or Share Tour Night Desert Safari, Camel Ride, Dune Bashing will put you on a 4×4 and head out into the desert for a thrilling escapade you’ll want to repeat over and over again.

Just like with the other tours on our guide, this tour also starts with you being picked up at your hotel lobby by a certified desert driver.

They have a ton of experience driving around in sandy conditions and know the area like the back of their hand, so you can feel safe cruising around with them in the barren wilderness. From Doha, pass by Mesaieed where you’ll see the red-hot flames emitted from the filtering of oil.

Next, arrive at Sealine Beach where you’ll hop on an adorable camel who will take you out to the sand dunes for some dune bashing or sand sledding at night.

Dune bashing is fun at any time, but at night it feels like you’re racing around on another planet with the stars shining down on you and your group.

Keep going until you get to the Inland Sea where you’ll have some time to take a dip in the warm waters.

Throughout the entire time, your knowledgeable tour guide will offer a fascinating educational commentary about everywhere you go. Their crew is amazing to work with, and you’re sure to love them just as much as everyone else!

3. Qatar Gold Dune Safari, Dune Bashing, Camel Ride, Sand Boarding, Inland Sea Desert

  • Departure Time: 8:30 AM, 1:30 PM
  • Includes: Transport by 4X4 air conditioned vehicle, insurance, short camel ride while visiting local camel camp(if selected), dune bashing, sand boarding, in land sea visit

Do you have a need for speed where there are no cars or pedestrians to inhibit you? Maybe you’d like to do something different than anything else you’ve experienced in your home country?

You’ll find it all in the Qatar Gold Dune Safari, Dune Bashing, Camel Ride, Sand Boarding, Inland Sea Desert Tour . This is yet another 4-hour tour that’s quite easy to fit into a busier schedule.

The tour guides are very flexible with pickup times, and they’ll come right to your hotel lobby (even the Doha or Hamad airports!) when it’s almost time to start the tour. Be ready with proper clothing and attitude to discover the diverse landscapes and culture of Qatar in this private safari!

As you make your way to the desert, your professional guide will tell you interesting anecdotes and educational stories about the area.

This adds even more value as you experience the different areas. Once you arrive, you’ll go on a short but exciting camel ride before speeding through the golden sands.

If you feel like it, you can also try out sandboarding! If you’re into other board sports, you’re sure to love sandboarding. It’s similar to snowboarding, but doesn’t hurt if you fall!

After pumping that adrenaline, take a relaxing stop for some tea and then head over to the Inland Sea/Khor al Udaid.

Take a breather in the sunny environment, and see if you can spot Saudi Arabia over the horizon. If you feel like it, you can wash some of that sand off by splashing around in the warm waters nearby.

4. Doha Half Day Desert Safari | Camel Riding | Falcons | Sand Surfing

  • Duration: 4 to 5 hours
  • Departure Time:  Between 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  Coffee and/or tea, bottled water, driver/guide, all taxes, fees and handling charges, camel ride (additional charges), sand boarding (free if requested)

Doha is a city full of excitement, but sometimes it’s nice to escape the crowds and noise and head out to the wild outdoors.  Sure, you could explore it on your own, but it’s much safer and more entertaining to go with a professional who knows the area expertly.

If that sounds like fun to you, check out the Doha: Private Half Day Desert Safari I Camel Riding I Falcons I Sand Surfing Tour !

Whether you’re a history buff, adrenaline junkie, or simply enjoy new explorations, you’re in the right place. Your guide is much more than just a driver who picks you up and hauls you around.

They’re well-educated in the area’s history and modern-day happenings, which adds more context for your high-energy experiences. Start off by cruising from Doha to the heart of the smooth, sandy desert.

The serene landscape is incredibly beautiful and home to countless species of wildlife – many of which are very rare. If you’d like, you can choose to visit an area where you’ll see ospreys nesting and even the graceful Arabian gazelles!

See the Inland Sea, which is a UNESCO site complete with its own ecosystem. This unique place is where the desert meets the sea and is inaccessible by road. Rather, you can only get here by trekking or driving through the dunes!

Stop for a delicious tea, coffee, and camel ride to relax your muscles and take it all in (one of the most memorable parts of this highly enjoyable tour!).

5. Private Half Day Desert Safari, Camel Ride, Sand Boarding, Inland Sea Visit

  • Departure Time: Between 7:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Includes:  4X4 air conditioned vehicle, insurance, bottled water, quick camel ride, dune bashing, sand boarding

We couldn’t leave out the Private Half Day Desert Safari, Camel Ride, Sand Boarding, Inland Sea Visit tour !

If you’d like to rove through the vast sandy panoramas of Qatar but want to do so in an exclusive way, then look no further. Experience different modes of transportation, with plenty of time for photo ops and relaxation.

Start off by being picked up in a heavy-duty 4WD pickup truck right at your hotel lobby. You get the opportunity to plan the start time that suits you and your party best. As it lasts around 4 to 5 hours, it’s also much easier to plan into a busy schedule.

If this is your first time visiting Qatar, it wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a tour like this one. You’ll head out from Doha and out to the desert, where you’ll start by hopping on a “ship of the desert”. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a camel!

These gentle giants are so sweet and will offer you a unique way to trek through the sands.

After that, head back to the camel camp where you’ll get to sit and enjoy a tasty local tea or coffee as your guide gets everything ready for a high-octane, off-road adventure.

Head into the climate-controlled 4×4 and race through the sand dunes, stopping intermittently for photo ops until the Arabian gulf appears.

Once you get to the sea, you’ll relax and enjoy the beautiful contrast between tan and blue. It’s a fantastic moment, after so much excitement, to enjoy this serene environment practically untouched by human nature.

If you’re looking for a great way to spend a few hours with loved ones, we can’t recommend this tour enough.

Qatar Tour Guide

Getting there.

Getting to Qatar is actually pretty easy, seeing as it’s conveniently at the crossroads of the eastern and western sides of the world. Qatar Airways is the national airline, covering an impressive 160 international spots. However, there are many other airlines that fly to the country. The most popular that service Doha Hamad International Airport are Air India, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, and others.

Central Doha is located about 9 miles, or 20 minutes by car from the international airport. The easiest way to get to Doha is by metro or bus. Take the metro and it’ll take you maybe 15 minutes to get to the city center. The bus usually takes a bit longer but is incredibly budget-friendly.

Getting Around

Metro – Just recently opened a few years ago, the Doha metro is clean, efficient, and budget-friendly. The 7 lines cover just about every part of the city, with most major tourist attractions having a metro stations close by.

Bus – Buses are probably not the best way to get around the city as the primary form of transportation while you’re staying there. It’s not the most efficient – however, the hop on hop off buses are a great way to see the major attractions.

Taxi – Karwa taxis are turquoise blue and the official taxis of the capital. The tariff starts around 1.2QAR per kilometer, with higher rates at night.

Rideshare – Uber does work in Qatar, and Careem is the local Doha taxi app. Both are great options if you prefer a rideshare.

Where to Stay

West Bay – This is a more recently developed area ideal for luxury accommodation and beautiful sea vistas. The tallest and most impressive skyscrapers tower over the area, located right on the coast of Doha. Entertainment and dining choices are endless, with a fun mall and many cultural activities to do nearby.

Corniche – This is one of the most beautiful areas with lovely seaside views. The Corniche Promenade is always pleasant to stroll around.

Al Souq – If you’re a history buff or simply want a more “traditional” Qatar experience, try Al Souq. Local delicacies, artwork, and souvenirs are top-notch here, along with access to the Museum of Islamic Art. The most beautiful traditional architecture is located here and easy to get to from the airport and West Bay.

Restaurants and Eating Out

Here are some of the top foods to try in Doha:

Saloona – This classic delicacy is an Arabic stew typically made with beef, fish, or lamb along with seasonal veggies along with ginger and garlic. Just about any traditional restaurant will have it, served with bread soaked in broth.

Warak Enab – Full of flavor, this light snack is perfect for any time of day. Vine leaves are stuffed full of beef, lamb, and rice complete with rich seasoning.

Balaleet – If you’re really hungry, try this satisfying dish combining vermicelli and an omelette flavored with saffron, sugar, and rose water.

Majboos – This is an incredibly important national dish, prepared with lamb or chicken. Slow-cooked to really get that rich flavor, you’ll find it at just about any restaurant in the country.

Madrouba – This traditional rice porridge is cooked with milk, butter, chicken, and cardamom. If you’re a fan of curry, you’ll love this one.

Kousa Mahshi – Consisting of a courgette stuffed with lamb and veggies, it is full of flavor with parsley and mint. Try it dipped with tomato paste or yogurt!

Luqaimat – You’ll find this traditional dish in most bakeries in the capital and is perfect if you have a sweet tooth! Similar to a doughnut, it’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside!

Nightlife and Entertainment

Most of the best female-friendly spots are located at luxury hotels, such as the Hilton, Intercontinental, Sheraton, W, La Cigale, Mondrian, JW Marriott, and Crowne Plaza. You may prefer to do things other than go clubbing or bars at night.

Souq Waqif – Walking around these historical streets is a blast! Full of traditional street stalls, upscale restaurants and incredible architecture, there’s always a lot to see. Street performances and art galleries are available at night, too!

Shisha Terrace at Four Seasons – With some of the best views in the city, this is a relaxed lounge with great service. If you’re into or want to try shisha, it’s hard to beat this place.

Sunset Dinner Cruise – Who doesn’t love a good sunset view? You’ll get one of the best on these cruises, which last around 2 hours. You can find more traditional cruises up to upscale yacht experiences.

PURE Lounge – Located at the Double Tree, you’ll find some of the best signature cocktails and panoramic views here. Many top live acts and DJs perform here, but it’s still a more lowkey vibe.

Beach Club at St. Regis – Now that the sun’s down, you can fully enjoy the beach at more comfortable temperatures. Relax on the white sand, take banana boat rides, or enjoy swimming in their Olympic-sized pool.

Qatar has basically two seasons, with summer being super-hot and winter being very pleasant. It’s almost always sunny and even in the “colder” months, it’s still quite warm during the day. The nighttime can be quite chilly, though, so make sure to pack accordingly.

Attractions

Souq Waqif – As we’ve mentioned a couple of times, Souq Waqif is a wonderful place to explore. Arguably the most scenic area, it offers exposure to traditional costumes, customs, food, and architecture.

Museum of Islamic Art – The museum building alone is incredible, but inside you’ll find the largest collection of Islamic art and artifacts in the world.

National Museum of Qatar – This museum is quite new, offering insight into local wildlife and the country’s history.

Villaggio – If you’re looking to do some shopping, you can’t beat this incredible outdoor mall complete with Venice-like canals where you can hop on and take a ride!

The Pearl – This man-made island is the epitome of luxury, and a great way to spend a day or night!

Katara Cultural Village – This massive complex is dedicated to boosting the country’s cultural identity, and they certainly succeeded!

Night Tours vs Day Tours

The temperature differences between day and night in Doha are incredible. If you’re there during the winter, it can get quite cold at night. Make sure you dress with warm yet breathable fabrics and we highly encourage layering so you never get too hot nor too cold.

During the daytime in the winter, you can expect a perfect climate for venturing around in the desert. In the summer, however, it can get blazing hot. Expect to sweat. Bring sunscreen.

Desert Tour Activities

Camel Riding –  The key to making this a smooth ride is to not resist the camel’s swaying from side-to-side. Instead, sway with them by relaxing your body, breathing deeply, and going with the flow. Make sure to wear clothing that allows you to stretch, as you’ll have to mount the camel by throwing one of your legs over. It shouldn’t be too uncomfortable, as you’ll only be riding around 15 minutes.

Dune Bashing –  Again, you want to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move around freely. You’ll be stepping in and out of sand occasionally, so make sure your shoes stay on and ideally keep out sand. Make sure to slather on the sunscreen and bring sunglasses that stay firmly on your head.

Sand Boarding –  To take off and cruise down the dunes, start at the top and take little hops until you get to the edge. Drop in with your dominant foot, leaning back slightly and bending your rear knee. Flex your abs and look where you want to go – your body will instinctively take you there.

How to Dress

Dressing appropriately can be a big stressor for new visitors, but don’t worry – it’s really not as complicated as many make it out to be. The good news is that while you should follow certain guidelines, no one expects you to dress like a local.

Women – Women aren’t required to cover their heads. Skirts and shorts are somewhat normal as it gets very hot, but nothing too short. Thin straps, sleeveless tops, transparent/semi-transparent shirts, and crop tops are not tolerated. Leggings by themselves aren’t as common, though if you feel your shorts or skirts or too short, you can wear leggings underneath.

Men – Wearing shirts, polos, cargo pants, or dress pants are perfectly fine. Shorts should be at least knee-length. Sleeveless tanks and slogan t-shirts that could be taken as offensive are not tolerated. Being shirtless is not recommended unless you’re at a private beach or pool.

1. How safe is Qatar?  Qatar is actually one of the safest countries in the world, with violent crime being extremely rare – even more so towards foreign tourists.

2. Are bikinis allowed?  No. Speedos, bikinis, and any other article of clothing that shows off a lot of skin is not allowed. One-piece bathing suits (never with low necklines) and board shorts/swim shorts are allowed, however.

3. Is it hot everywhere?  If you can believe it, there are various spots around the city with outdoor air conditioning! Galleries Lafayette, Souq Waqif, and Gharrafa Park are some of the most notable.

4. What do local schedules look like?  The weekends for locals are actually Friday and Saturday, with the regular work week being Sunday through Thursday. Most places are open on Fridays, though they’ll often be closed from 11AM to 1PM for congregational prayers.

5. Can you drive in Qatar?  Yes, both men and women can drive in the country.

6. Are piercings and/or tattoos allowed?  Yes, however, it’s best to cover up tattoos and piercings outside of the ears.

7. Is it hard to get around if you only speak English?  No, not at all. In fact, English is often seen as the country’s “second language” and many locals speak it, as well.

  • Winter is the best time to visit. As you probably know by now, Qatar has a desert climate which means very hot, dry heat from May to September. Try visiting between December to February, which is suitable for just about any activity.
  • Keep the culture in mind. Qatar is a Muslim country, which means there may be a difference in local traditions, customs, laws, and religion. We recommend being particularly aware of these factors when filming of snapping photos of people, as many locals do not like being photographed – particularly women.
  • Dress appropriately. This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the previous point. Dress modestly. Women have to cover their shoulders and avoid wearing bottoms that expose their legs. Men and women should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless tops when entering government buildings, healthcare facilities, and malls.
  • Be aware of alcohol regulations. As is the case with most Islamic countries, alcohol isn’t illegal but available only at specific restaurants, bars, and clubs. Not to mention, they’ve invoked a tax on alcohol that makes it significantly more expensive.
  • Public displays of affections are not allowed. Even if you’re traveling with your spouse, you are not allowed any PDA. While you can hold hands, kissing and hugging, etc. are not.

Sardine tours are usually for 3 days and are rushed, cramped and uncomfortable. However, you can pay a premium to get better hotels than the other people you're travelling with.

with desert tour

I was thinking I'd not pay anything like that much to sleep in a bathroom.

There's tent with or without bathroom

That's too expensive.. maybe I have to drop the idea going to Desert. Its not even sahara

Again, what sort of tour are you looking for?

it's already written Desert Tour

Got a quote from a tour operator

The price for the private 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour for one person depends on the type of accommodation you choose! Here are some options to help you decide:

First option: The price would be 778 euros, including Africa Luxury Camp in the desert and Hotel Babylon Dades in Dades Valley

Second option: The price would be 845 euros, including Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp in the desert and Hotel Babylon Dades in Dades Valley

Third option: The price would be 914 euros, including Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp in the desert and Dar Blues in Dades Valley

Fourth option: The price would be 1199 euros, including Desert Luxury Camp in the desert (the best camp in the desert, it is an air-conditioned and isolated camp! The camp has a swimming pool too!) and Chez Pierre in Dades Valley

Please check out the itinerary of the tour to know what to expect https://moroccofabuloustravel.com/3-day-desert-tour-fes-to-marrakech.

The price for our small shared 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour (10 people maximum!) is 249 euros per person, including a private luxury tent with an en-suite bathroom at Africa Luxury Camp or similar in the desert and a private room with an en-suite bathroom at Hotel Babylon Dades or similar in Dades Valley.

So the small group tour seems reasonable to me

Desert Drives and Sea Lion Dives: The Enduring Draws of La Paz, Mexico

New hotels and destination-worthy restaurants now complement the ever-appealing outdoors surrounding La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur.

For our last night in La Paz, Mexico, we kept it simple: A couple of cans of cold Pacifico, a bench on the malecón, the city’s waterfront promenade, and the sunset glowing orange over the shimmering silver-blue Sea of Cortez. My husband, Alex, and I had spent nearly a week taking scenic desert drives and lazy city strolls, visiting stunning beaches and mountains, and enjoying a steady diet of fish tacos and mezcalitas. But now we were salt-coated and sinking into a blissful exhaustion that comes only after a day spent scuba diving.

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, the Mexican state where some 42 percent of the land and water are natural protected areas , and the city lies on the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, considered one of the world’s most diverse marine environments. Travelers have long been drawn to the region’s glorious outdoors, a distinctive mix of ocean and red-hued desert, to spend days not only diving, but also sailing, kayaking, fishing, kite surfing, mountain biking, camping and hiking.

In recent years, the city has maintained its strong commitment to environmental conservation, but has also welcomed new restaurants and accommodations, meeting a growing desire among many travelers to Mexico for authentic experiences found beyond the walls of an enormous resort.

“This is an adventure destination,” said Luz Maria Zepeda, the director of the city’s tourism board. “We want people who want to explore, who want to preserve the environment the way it is, and to help us protect it.”

A seaside city that has a broad walkway lined with trees along the waterfront.

Growth, but kept in check

Home to around 300,000 people, La Paz has a decidedly laid-back feel — “The Peace,” it’s aptly named — and is often overshadowed by Los Cabos , a municipality on the state’s southernmost tip that includes San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, as well as by tiny Todos Santos , a stylish destination for art and food on the Pacific Coast.

Indeed, while La Paz had a record-breaking 600,000 tourists in 2023, Los Cabos — through cruises and air alone — welcomes 3 million travelers annually .

La Paz’s comparatively modest number of visitors is, in part, a question of access: La Paz’s airport almost exclusively serves domestic destinations, with direct flights primarily from Mexico City and Guadalajara. Most international visitors opt to fly to the larger Los Cabos International Airport and take the two- to three-hour drive to La Paz.

The drive from the airport is its own worthwhile journey, with routes running along the Pacific Coast through Todos Santos and El Pescadero, home to Playa Los Cerritos , a popular surfing destination. A slightly longer, but epically beautiful, drive winds through the Sierra La Laguna mountain range.

La Paz is a walkable city with good roads and ample services. It does not have any large resorts, and there are no current plans to build any: This is not a destination with aspirations of imitating the all-inclusive, tourist-heavy spring break vibes long associated with Cabo. Instead of a waterfront dominated by restricted private access, La Paz has the malecón, which was renovated in 2020 and 2021. Last April, a proposal to build a large port for cruise ships was withdrawn after local pushback .

“We don’t want massive tourism,” said Ivan Félix, the manager of the tour and travel department of the La Paz tourism board. “The idea is not to grow in numbers, but in quality.”

That has translated to a bevy in smaller, higher-end hotel openings: Hotel Indigo , formerly the Costabaja Resort & Spa, was renovated and reopened by IHG in December and Republica Pagana , an adults-only boutique hotel with a rooftop bar and restaurant, welcomed its first guests in January. Grupo Habita opened the Baja Club Hotel in a former colonial villa in 2021 on the malecón. Hilton plans to complete a renovation of the historic La Perla Hotel , which first opened in 1940, by the end of this year.

That sophisticated growth can also be found in the city’s culinary scene, which continues to be dominated by the region’s fresh seafood, flour tortillas and ranch-driven fare like meat-filled molcajetes and snack-sized burritos. Fried fish tacos remain stalwarts, from street stands to casual eateries like Taco Fish La Paz (featured on the Netflix series “Taco Chronicles,”) and Toto Frito , where you can try sustainably farmed totoaba, a fish native to the Sea of Cortez. We feasted on a variety of chilaquiles at Maria California , a popular brunch spot, and inhaled spicy shrimp aguachile at a beach stand at Playa El Tecolote, just north of Balandra. At Los 32 Sabores , a memorable dinner of manta ray and tripe tacos on fresh tortillas and Caesar salads made tableside hinted at the city’s ambition to become a bona fide food and drink destination.

Gratitude Coffee Makers , a coffee bar a few blocks off the malecón, was opened by the husband-and-wife team Sergio Hernández and Gloria Olivera in 2022. The couple work closely with Mexican coffee farmers, ensuring both quality beans and fair labor practices, and host art exhibitions and events at their cafe. They have noticed a decided shift in the restaurant scene in recent years.

“It’s definitely developing. There are a lot of people from the mainland that are coming here and opening restaurants. You can find a lot more things to do,” said Mr. Hernández, who is from Mexico City.

Some of that diversity can be found nearby at Tiger Club , which serves Southeast Asian fare and natural wine. The restaurant is housed on the back patio of Casa Nopal , a showroom and shop specializing in handmade goods from Mexican artisans, both of which opened in 2022. Nearby, Sunrise/Sunset is a natural wine bar that opened in December. Nemi offers riffs on traditional dishes, which might include fresh fish served raw or topped with hoja santa butter, duck confit in flour tortillas or pork belly served with beans and nopales. The restaurant is the first solo project of Alejandro Villagomez, who in 2011 moved from Mexico City where he was chef de cuisine of Pujol .

“La Paz is a magical place,” Mr. Villagomez said. “We are surrounded by sea and desert, and we strive to find the best ingredients both inside and outside the city.”

White sand, cobalt waters

Still, for all of the new hotels and destination-worthy restaurants, the natural world remains La Paz’s main draw. Chrissy Cappellano, a certified master scuba diver trainer from Long Island, in New York, has been living in the city since 2018.

“You have to plan multiple trips to see everything,” she said of the area’s rich marine life. “There’s a time that’s good for whale sharks, for whales, for sea lions.”

I met Ms. Cappellano when she led our daylong dive trip with Carey Dive Center that included a surprise sighting of humpback whales and a swim with whale sharks , the wide-mouthed, filter-feeding fish that can grow up to 30 feet. The rest of the day was spent around the islands of Espírito Santo and Partida — the archipelago is part of an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a national park and a 45-minute ride from the city — diving around a protected sea lion colony called Los Islotes . The marine mammals didn’t hesitate to approach our group, performing flips and in some cases, biting onto flippers and dive hoses. Perhaps as spectacular were the schools of sardines, glinting silver in the sun as they whirled around us like confetti.

Care for the environment is a common talking point on dive trips I’ve been on elsewhere in Mexico and around the world; here, it was an actionable part of the agenda. Daily access to whale sharks, which migrate in order to feed in the waters right off the city , is limited to a small number of tour boats at set times. As we boarded our boat after our first dive at Los Islotes, someone spotted a sea lion pup who had been wounded by a fishing hook. Ms. Cappellano quickly sent photos and videos to Rescate de Lobos Marinos , an organization that helps monitor and treat sea lions. Carey also made a point to provide reusable water bottles for the day. (The state as a whole has been strictly limiting single-use plastics since 2018.)

It’s not hard to see how and why visitors fall in love with these cobalt waters, and why local residents are so protective of them. Espiritu Santo is a geological layer cake carved with countless small anchorages, beloved by sailors and fishing enthusiasts. But there’s also much to explore on land — the island is a popular destination for hiking and glamping, while Playa Balandra , famous for its white sand and shallow turquoise waters, is consistently named one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. An easy 20-minute drive from the city center, it is also a protected area, and limits the number of visitors allowed per day, with timed entries at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. La Ventana, a 40-minute drive, is a famous kite-surfing destination . There’s mountain biking, dune buggying, hiking and camping, too.

“You can pick a beach depending on the wind. There are waterfalls and hot springs. Every sunset here is usually amazing,” Ms. Cappellano said. “There’s just so much nature to be enjoyed.”

Union Pacific's famed “Big Boy” steam locomotive comes west during summer tour

with desert tour

Union Pacific's famed Big Boy steam locomotive will be headed west during its "Westward Bound" summer tour.

The world's largest operating steam locomotive, Big Boy No. 4014 will depart from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming on June 30 as it travels through Utah, Nevada and California.

Unfortunately, Big Boy won’t be traveling through the Victor Valley this year but will make numerous whistle-stops in communities along the way from Wyoming to Northern California.

During the tour, longer public display stops will also be made on July 12 and 13 in Roseville, near Sacramento, and on July 20 and 21 in Ogden, Utah.

In October 2019, Big Boy made a stop in Victorville  during its "Great Race Across the Southwest," a third and final tour of the train that celebrated its 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.

Big Boy also came through the High Desert in April 2014  and made a stop in Barstow as it was towed by a modern Union Pacific engine from Colton to Wyoming.

Westward Bound

The Westward Bound tour will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and the communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday, Union Pacific said.

"The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry," Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena said "We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows."

Big Boy tour

Additional route details and approximate times for Big Boy whistle-stops will be shared closer to the tour. A route map can be found at UPsteam.com.

During the tour, the Union Pacific Museum will host a special passenger trip. The unique experience is the annual gala fundraiser for the nonprofit organization which provides a rare opportunity to travel on this historic heritage equipment.

More information on the specifics will appear at UPtrainTix.com when they become available.

This is one of two public tours planned for Big Boy in 2024, with a second tour planned later this fall with stops in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Illinois, among other states. Details of the second tour will be released later this spring.

High Desert train fans to visit Big Boy

Lance Stevens of Victorville told the Daily Press he plans to travel to Ogden and Roseville to photograph the “magnificent locomotive.”

“I was out of town the last time the Big Boy came through the High Desert so I missed my chance to shoot this beast,” he said. “I’m an amateur photographer but I love trains, especially these old vintage locomotives.”

Jason Ramos said he plans on taking his family to Roseville to look at the Big Boy locomotive, which he described as a "massive steam locomotive that shakes the earth" when it rumbles through.

“My family loves trains, so we’re going to visit the Sacramento area and visit Big Boy as part of our summer vacation,” said Ramos, who lives in Victorville. "I watched it travel through Hesperia and it's quite the sight."

The Big Boy

"Weighing in at 1.2 million pounds, the Big Boy makes a big impression in communities it visits, reminding us of bygone days and the important role the railroad continues to play in our global economy," said Scott Moore, retired senior vice president for corporate relations and chief administrative officer for Union Pacific.

Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941 to handle the steep terrain between Cheyenne and Ogden, Utah. Of the eight still in existence, No. 4014 is the world's only operating Big Boy.

The seven other Big Boys are on display in Cheyenne, St. Louis, Dallas, Denver, Omaha, Nebraska; Scranton, Pennsylvania and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Augusta debut: American Express winner Nick Dunlap soaking in his first Masters

with desert tour

Nick Dunlap was supposed to play in the Masters this week as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, and he surely expected back in August when he won the Amateur title that he would play the first two rounds of the Masters with Augusta National defending champion Jon Rahm.

It’s remarkable how the lives of Rahm and Dunlap have changed in the seven months since Dunlap won the Amateur championship, and how somehow the two golfers who won the last two The American Express titles are still playing together at the Masters despite it all.

First came Rahm’s decision to jump from the PGA to the LIV tour, a jump that knocked him out of PGA Tour events. But the Masters is not a PGA Tour-run event, so Rahm and a dozen other golfers from the LIV tour will be in the field this week, Rahm as the defending champion.

Dunlap, on the other hand, crafted the single best story on the PGA Tour this year – and one of the few television ratings successes for the tour – by winning The American Express as both an amateur and a sponsor’s exemption. By turning pro in the following days, Dunlap made a little news by abandoning his Masters invitation as a U.S. Amateur winner knowing he would still be in the Masters for winning a tour event.

So when the pairings for the Masters came out Tuesday, it was no surprise to see Rahm and Dunlap still paired together, along with former U.S. Open winner Matthew Fitzpatrick. While Rahm is the defender at Augusta National, Dunlap is one of a handful of high-profile first-time Masters starters. In talking to the media at Augusta National, Dunlap isn’t taking his first stroll down Magnolia Lane lightly.

“Life is too short for special things like that,” Dunlap said. “May not get a chance to come back; maybe I'll play 20 more times. I have no idea.”

Slow but steady

It has been a sluggish start to a professional career for Dunlap. He’s played six times as a pro, missing the cut twice and finishing 80 th  at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a signature event with no cut.  But at the Texas Children’s Houston Open two weeks ago, Dunlap produced his best performances since The American Express, tying for 11 th  and shooting a third-round 63, his best round since a third-round 60 at La Quinta Country Club during his magnificent week in the desert.

“I'm learning that the hard way in some of these events but also learning that 4-, 5-under is top 10 and even-par is the cut, so it's the small mistakes that I'm trying to clean up, and the things that Coach Seawell (of Alabama) tried to beat into our brains for a few years,” Dunlap said.

It would be easy to say that Dunlap is starting to get his legs under him as a pro with the Houston performance. But this week is different. Yes, Dunlap has played in two U.S. Opens (missing the cut both times), but the Masters, with Jon Rahm as a playing partner, is probably enough to put a little shake in Dunlap’s legs. The former University of Alabama golfer is trying to take in the experience as much as he can.

“I don't know. I just try to enjoy it, look around,” Dunlap said. “I got here at 10:30 this morning and walked around until noon. Didn't do anything. Walked around the pro shop like three times.”

The last four months have been remarkable for Dunlap with a series of firsts, from his first win to his first start as a pro and now his first major championship as a pro. As someone pointed out to Dunlap, the only drawback might be that he can’t possibly be the low amateur at the tournament, something he would have had a real shot at until the win in La Quinta in January.

So what should fans expect from Dunlap in his first Masters? Even Dunlap isn’t sure, but he admits he is missing at least one Masters tradition for amateurs that won’t happen for him now.

“I think it will be really cool to stay in the Crow's Nest for a night or two and experience that,” Dunlap said of amateur quarters at the club. “Fortunately and unfortunately I'm in a new position and grateful to be here, but, no, I wish they would let me pop in there for a second. But it is what it is.”
