Musicians in Havana, Cuba

Much like the varying conditions of classic cars, Havana appears to be in a constant state of restoration. A mishmash of beautifully restored colonial buildings rubs shoulders with dilapidated tenements of regular Cubans.

Thanks For Looking!

I'm David Leiter , the guy behind this website. I'm an American who's been traveling the world full time for 8 years now.

I started this travel blog in 2019 to document my own international trips, share my photos, and help others learn how to travel the world and find some really good spots off the beaten path.

I'm currently based in Bali , Indonesia , where I met my wife Intan, who’s a Bali local. Now she joins me on these wild and crazy adventures too.

Together, we've done some bucket list hikes , climbed active volcanoes , seen exotic wildlife , and visited some spectacular castles , temples , and monuments around the world.

I've worked with and been featured by BBC Travel , NBC News , Time , and other big companies. I also sell some photo prints from my travels now.

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list. I hope this world travel blog can help and inspire you in your own journeys as well!

Below are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They are always my starting point when I need to book a flight, hotel, tour, or train, or for meeting people!

  • Going – Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights) finds incredible flight deals and sends them directly to your inbox. If you’re flexible with your dates and destinations, you can score some amazing deals and save hundreds of dollars in the process!
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there, with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all-around booking site. It constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates and has the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, it’s always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Intrepid Travel – If you want to do group tours, go with Intrepid. They offer good small-group tours that use local operators and leave a minimal environmental footprint. And, as a reader of this site, you’ll get exclusive discounts too!
  • Get Your Guide – This is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. It has tons of tour options in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes and walking tours to street art lessons!

The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)

How to Spend a Long Weekend in Stockholm, Sweden

Come for the style, but be won over by old world glamour, new world Nordic cuisine, and yes, ABBA.

For museum lovers, Stockholm is heaven, with more than 50 museums and cultural institutions for all tastes, from the Viking Museum to the Swedish Museum of Natural History , to the ABBA museum , or if you’re a shopper, well, make haste to Bibliotekstan , a pedestrian-friendly haven of haute couture. From the elevated hipster cocktail-and-cuisine scene in Sodermalm to Michelin-rated chefs in Ostermalm, the city is a sure palate pleaser, just save room for sweets—the licorice here is next level. To help you make the most of 72 hours in Scandinavia’s cultural capital, here’s our curated guide for where to stay, explore, shop, eat and indulge in Stockholm.

Thursday Morning

cityscape of gamla stan in stockholm

We love a hotel that’s a destination unto itself, and for 150 years, The Grand Hôtel Stockholm has been exactly that—unquestionably grand and THE place to stay for tourists, royalty and visiting politicians, rockstars, Nobel winners and movie stars. It opened in 1874 as Scandinavia’s first international luxury hotel, and has offered its signature high-touch hospitality every day since.

T he hotel offers 70 spacious suites, including nine designed by Scandinavian notables including Susanne Josephson and Martin Brudnizki, but the standard rooms are beautifully comfortable too, and service across the board is five star. Honestly, given its century and a half of Stockholm history, you can absorb much of the city’s flavor without ever leaving the hotel, but with the best shopping, sight-seeing and dining all in easy walking distance, why not venture out?

Thursday Afternoon

colourful buildings stortorget, stockholm, sweden

Drop your bags then stroll across the bridge to Gamla Stan, where the Vikings first set up shop in 1000 CE. Today “Old Town” is Europe’s best preserved medieval city center, thanks to the small island becoming the Baltic shipping and trading hub in the 13th century, and home of the Royal Palace and Royal Chapel. Wander around its enchanting warren of narrow cobbled streets and 16th-century buildings in hues of ochre, rust and weathered green.

Not surprisingly, there’s excellent antiquing— Brinken Antik has a lovely collection of silver, bronze candelabras, plus carved wood toys—and a plethora of gift shops and local craft stores (fabulous yarn/wool at Makeri14 ), especially along Västerlånggatan. Up your IQ with a quick stop at the Nobel Museum , then reward your hard-working brain with licorice tastings at Lakritsroten .

Friday Evening

a fish on a plate with food

Before leaving Gamla Stan, savor an apothecary-esque cocktail at the Pharmarium , then head back to the Grand Hotel for a traditional Swedish smörgåsbord dinner—an elaborate spread of all things pickled herring and smoked fish, boiled potatoes, fresh salads, and traditional meatballs and sweets, at Veranda .

Evidently there’s a science to how one smörgåsbords, and thankfully your server will guide you through, including the traditional shot of Aquavit with lager chaser, which we highly recommend.

Friday Morning

gustav vasa museum and nordiska museum, djurgarden, stockholm, sweden

Grab breakfast at the hotel's Veranda restaurant, which will fortify you for a morning of museum-going. Before heading out, ask the concierge if you can peek into the hotel’s regal, Versailles-inspired Hall of Mirrors, site of numerous galas and the first 29 Nobel Ceremonies.

Walk 20 minutes down the Strandvagen to Djurgården , where you can get carried away by museum after museum— the Viking Museum , the Spritmuseum (hello Absolut and spirits galore!), the Nordiska Museet , to name just a few. But if you’re a mere mortal and need to pace yourself, start with ABBA The Museum , because Mama Mia, you’re in Sweden . Even if you’re not a die-hard ABBA fan, you’ll enjoy learning how these four Swedes took the rock world by storm 50 years ago, winning the 1974 Eurovision award with their breakout hit, “Waterloo.” It’s interactive, informative, and a blast. Warning, take the museum’s tagline to heart: “Walk in. Dance out.”

Next, dance on over to the Vasa Museum , where you can time travel from 1970s-era rock stadiums to a 17th-century maritime marvel, and one of the world’s most remarkable discovery stories. Imagine a four-story tall, massive wooden ship—think Titanic, circa 1628—that sank on its maiden voyage right in Stockholm harbor, and sat 100 feet underwater for 333 years. Now here it is, fully restored, including its elaborate carvings. Truly, you have to see it (and smell that old wood smell) to believe it.

Friday Afternoon

grand hotel stockholm

For lunch, walk back down the Strandvägen toward Ostermalm’s Saluhall, Stockholm’s historic farmers' market and food hall, where you can find a bit of everything, from healthy wraps and juices to decadent seafood entrees, to smørrebrød, pizza and confectionaries.

Now it’s time for serious Scandi design indulgence, which means one thing: Svenskt Tenn . This mecca for Swedish home interiors is chock-full of furniture, fabrics, jewelry, home accessories and more. The legacy of design pioneers Estrid Ericson and Josef Frank remains vivid as you wander the two-story showroom where tabletop arrangements, classic Frank textile designs and bold new patterns entice. Before you leave, enjoy fika (Swedish custom of sweet treat and warm drink) at the Café Svenskt Tenn , in honor of Ericson, a tea aficionado.

Be sure to return to the hotel in plenty of time to cap your afternoon off with the full Nordic sauna and cold plunge experience in the Grand Hôtel’s luxurious spa.

royal swedish opera kungliga operan in stockholm at twilight, sweden, scandinavia

Begin your evening with cocktails at the hotel's Cadier Bar , where bar manager Anton Windmar’s imaginative menu, created anew each year, distills the essence of Sweden’s unparalleled natural beauty (archipelago, Northern Lights, meadow flowers…) into drink. Everything here is art, from the original watercolors accompanying each concoction, to the custom-created sculptural glassware designed for each drink, to the bar’s see-and-be-seen ambiance.

Then options include checking out what’s on offer at the stunning Kungliga Operan , Stockholm’s performing arts center, a few steps away from the hotel, or enjoying the intrepid culinary offerings at Ekstedt , home of award-winning wood-fired cuisine. If you prefer something more casual, Olli is a spunky neighborhood restaurant equally beloved for its playlists and satisfying Northern Italian food.

Saturday Morning

aerial view of nordic museum, stockholm, sweden

Today it’s back over to Östermalm and neighboring Norrmalm (both a 15-minute walk) for the ultimate Scandinavian shopping experience. First stop, Acne Studios , where you’ll find tastemaker Jonny Johansson latest men’s and women’s ready-to-wear styles in a showroom that was formerly a bank where a robbery/hostage crisis in 1973 gave rise to the term “Stockholm syndrome.”

Nearby, Rodebjer’s flagship studio offers playfully eccentric fashion for the woman “who wants to get on with her life while still looking and feeling good,” according to designer Carin Rodebjer. All Blues is a must for artisanal jewelry with distinctly Swedish clean lines and shapes. Totême , along Bibliosteksgatan, is sublimely sleek and chic, while Houdini , another Swedish brand, is a go-to for activewear (especially if it’s cold!).

To refuel after all that high fashion, how ‘bout down-to-earth hot dogs at the famed Stockholm Hot Dog Stand ? Alternatively, Restaurant Hantverket has a well-rounded menu for a more upscale midday meal. Or if you power through past lunch and can hold out until the delightful Tyge & Sessil opens at 4 p.m., treat yourself to wine and small plates from celebrity chef Niklas Ekstedt (especially if you didn’t go to Ekstedt for Friday dinner).

Saturday Afternoon

narrow alley in gamla stan, stockholm, sweden

If you’re up for another 30-minute stroll, walk back through Gamla Stan, or take the ferry from the hotel’s waterfront to the near shore of Södermalm, where along the water and looking back to the Grand Hotel, the Fotografiska is Stockholm’s ode to contemporary photography.

Rotating exhibits feature world-class fine art photography from the likes of Cindy Sherman and Kary Lasch (on view through April 2024). The museum feels like an expansive, edgy gallery—easy to maneuver, with artwork presented in informative, engaging context. Save time for the gift shop, which has great gifts and souvenirs at good prices.

Saturday Evening

grand hotel restaurant stockholm

For your final night, indulge in either of Michelin-starred chef Mathias Dahlgren’s restaurants, Matbaren or Seafood Gastro, both culinary destinations in and of themselves yet conveniently located within the Grand Hotel. Matbaren offers a seasonal seafood-forward menu in a modern, casual bistro atmosphere, while Seafood Gastro is a multi-course tasting experience centered around aquatic ingredients, that will, frankly, blow you away.

The custom-crafted plateware from Norway’s Odd Standard is as much a delicacy as the dishes themselves. Add wine pairings and you’ll have an evening beyond compare, not to mention a new-found appreciation for Sweden’s shining culinary moment.

Sunday Morning

kungsträdgården stockholm

After so much shopping, eating, and museum-going, spend your last hours in Stockholm taking in the nearby parks and green spaces, including the Kungsträdgården , also known as Kungsan or Stockholm’s central park. Watch ice skaters if you visit in the winter, or enjoy coffee at an outdoor café on warmer days.

The city’s slightly off-the-beaten path green oasis, Skeppsholmen , is a small islet just to the east of the hotel, where you can meander around the perimeter and take in incredible views of Gamla Stan and Strandvägen across the water. If you’ve got the stamina for one more museum, the contemporary art at Moderna Museet is certainly worth seeing.

This Gorgeous Island in the Bahamas Has Ultra-exclusive Hotels, Fresh Seafood, and the Largest Concentration of Blue Holes in the World

How to plan a perfect trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas, including where to stay, what to do, and when to visit.

SHansche/Getty Images

The largest of the Bahamas’ 30 inhabited islands, Andros encompasses 100 miles of clear coastline, abundant wildlife, and an intricate underwater system that sits close to the third-largest barrier reef in the world. But despite its size, the island, composed of North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros, has plenty of unpopulated stretches, without a cruise ship or all-inclusive in sight. Instead, visitors can expect deserted beaches and flats that make the destination the bonefishing capital of the world.

As the gateway to a deepwater basin called the Tongue of the Ocean, diving in the sweeping Andros Barrier Reef is one of the best things to do in the Bahamas , alongside exploring the largest concentration of blue sinkholes in the region (and the world).

The island’s colorful capital, North Andros, is home to a Seminole Indian population that specializes in woodwork and hand-dyeing cotton Androsia fabric. And in Central Andros, historical sites include the over century-old St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the dive-ready Blue Holes National Park.

There are also accommodations for every type of traveler, from private island hideaways to world-renowned fishing lodges. In fact, Andros’ hotels are as desirable as the island itself: Both Kamalame Cay and Caerula Mar Club landed on Travel + Leisure 's list of favorite Caribbean resorts in 2023 .

If you time your visit right, you can even attend one of the annual events, like June's All Andros Crab Festival and May’s Red Bays Snapper Tournament , where the island’s native Seminole Indians compete in basket-weaving and fishing competitions . “Andros is a truly wonderful place. It’s a remote location nestled on the western side of the Bahamas, where you can enjoy great fishing and food,” says Cheryl Bastian, owner of Swain's Cay Lodge in Mangrove Cay. “Androsians are hospitable and their greatest wish is for you to enjoy your stay.”

Here’s how to do just that on Andros, including where to stay, what to do, and the best time to visit.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Andros is home to the most blue holes in the world, accessible both inland and offshore.
  • Indulge in a private island jaunt at the ultra-exclusive, 96-acre retreat of Kamalame Cay in North Andros.
  • Pair the quintessential Bahamian conch with a Kalik beer at seaside Shine’s Conch Shack.
  • Head to North Andros, the only western settlement that’s home to the descendants of the Seminole Indians of Florida.
  • The island hosts fun events like the All Andros Crab Fest come summer.

Caerula Mar Club

The beachfront Caerula Mar Club features 18 warm-toned rooms and four villas on the remote South Andros — home to about 2,000 residents. There are two on-site casual eateries — Driff’s Beach Bar and Switcha — plus Lusca, a Caribbean-inspired fine-dining establishment. The passion project was envisioned by HGTV's Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, who describe the hotel as “barefoot luxury.”

Kamalame Cay

This 96-acre private island haven has 22 rooms and suites that include a mix of cottages, bungalows, and Balinese-style beach houses. Guests receive their own golf carts to explore the island, as well as get access to water sports like kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling. Plus, the property is coveted for its prime location near the Andros Barrier Reef.

Small Hope Bay Lodge

Located in Central Andros, Small Hope Bay Lodge overlooks the Andros Barrier Reef, offering world-class diving, including shark and night dives. The 21 all-inclusive rooms sit directly on a beach that's just 15 minutes from wall dives and deep, open drops. The lodge is also a mere six miles from the popular Cousteau and Captain Bill’s Blue Holes.

Swain's Cay Lodge

The Bahamian-owned Swain's Cay Lodge in Mangrove Cay is a favorite for bonefishing and aquatic adventurers. Owner Cheryl Bastian is happy to coordinate excursions, including picnic lunches and wildlife spotting. As for its culinary assets, the on-site Reefside Restaurant & Bar offers beachside dining.

Tiamo Resort

Accessible only by seaplane or boat, this 14-room resort on South Andros offers luxury accommodations and French-inspired cuisine. Raise a red flag and a butler will come to your thatched-roof villa just steps away from the beach. Surrounded by 125 acres of nature preserve, the eco-chic resort also has activities such as reef fishing, diving, and wakeboarding.

Best Things to Do

Delve into world-class scuba diving.

The Andros Barrier Reef is the world’s third-longest barrier reef, teeming with vibrant marine life that can be viewed on dive excursions for more than 130 miles. With a large concentration of blue holes and caverns, you won’t have any trouble discovering the rich reef system and landscapes below.

Try deep-sea and fly fishing.

Known as the bonefish capital of the world, Andros is home to a collection of natural flats, particularly on the north and west side of the island. Catch and release a bonefish or fish for bigger game like yellowfin tuna and barracuda. “Our fishing product is resilient, and the avid anglers who travel worldwide come back again year after year to seek the thrilling adventure of the bonefish, tarpon, and elusive permit,” says Bastian.

Explore national parks.

Andros has five protected national parks, including West Side National Park, which stretches more than 1.5 million acres with dense mangroves and a nursery habitat that’s critical to the bonefishing ecosystem. There’s also the Blue Holes National Park, home to 40,000 acres that include freshwater reservoirs and blue holes.

Discover the blue holes.

There are more than 180 of these natural wonders on the island, and some popular spots include the Stargate Blue Hole, El Dorado, and Benjamin’s Blue Hole. Many hotels and diving sites also offer tours into these underwater relics.

Best Restaurants

Shine’s Conch Shack

This popular seaside shack is owned by Ornald "Shine" Greene, a bonefishing guide who's happy to tell a story or two about the island. During certain times, you’ll even catch fishermen loading their catch of the day and taking it directly to the restaurant. Make sure to order the conch or ceviche, best washed down with an ice-cold Kalik beer.

Brigadier's Restaurant

This scenic restaurant has over-water seating on a pier at Dream Villas in Central Andros. The menu features both Bahamian and American cuisine, including cracked conch and chicken fettuccine. Enjoy the soothing sound of waves in this casual, alfresco setting that specializes in fresh seafood.

Millie’s Takeaway

For a taste of South Androsian food, head to resident Millie’s restaurant. Here, visitors can enjoy conch burgers, Johnny cakes, and a number of other Bahamian foods. You can take your food to go and enjoy it on a nearby beach.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Andros for good weather is mid-December to April, but it’s important to note this is also the high season, which sees more crowds and higher prices. The summer months of June and July feature big festivals, like the All Andros & Berry Islands Regatta and All Andros Crab Fest.

How to Get There

Airlines such as Aztec Airways, Makers Air, Titan Air, and LeAir Charter offer weekly flights directly to Andros Town Airport (ASD) from Nassau, Bahamas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. To get to San Andros Airport (SAQ) in North Andros, book a flight on Western Air from Nassau, or Aztec Airways from the U.S. LeAir flies to South Andros Airport (TZN).

How to Get Around

Rental cars and vans are available, with prices starting at $85 per day for the former and $120 per day for the latter. Note that some companies may require a deposit. There are no buses or other forms of public transportation on Andros. Taxi cabs are readily available at each airport on arrival.

We've all got a list of places that we want to see for ourselves: places friends have enthused about, places we've read about, dreamed about. This is our list. It's the 500 most thrilling, memorable, downright interesting places on this planet ranked in order of their brilliance. These are the places we think you should experience; there are sights that will humble you, amaze you and surprise you. They'll provoke thoughts, emotions or just an urgent need to tell someone about them.

Here are the top 10 travel experiences from Lonely Planet's Ultimate Travel List . We hope this will inspire many more travel wish lists of your own.

Order your copy of the book to see all 500 incredible destinations.

1. Explore the enigmatic ‘lost city’ of Petra

The treasured Unesco Heritage Site of Petra is the must-see ultimate experience on our list. Once nearly lost to the outside world, the sandstone city is now one of the most loved places on the planet, voted in as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World by popular ballot in 2007. Spread over some 102 sq miles (264 sq km), Petra was constructed by the ancient Nabataeans, a civilisation of crafters and merchants, and made for a grand trade route stop-off between Arabian oases. But generations later, after the city was abandoned, it was known only to the Bedouin who made the caves their home. The iconic Treasury, looming 128ft (39m) high is most visitors' first sight of the city, reached after a winding journey through a narrow water-etched slot canyon. Rediscover the city's eternal air of mystery in the early morning or the hours before closing when it's at its most atmospheric.

2. See the islands that changed the course of science - the Galápagos

A thousand kilometres from mainland South America, life on the Galápagos follows different rules. Cormorants can't fly. Iguanas can swim. Tortoises live nearly 200 years. The islands are famed, of course, as the place where Charles Darwin developed his ideas on evolution by natural selection. The process is more obvious here than elsewhere on Earth, since animals that otherwise look alike diverge subtly from island to island, depending on their environment. You'll find blue-footed boobies performing cartoonish mating dances, creeping colonies of iguanas, penguins zooming underwater, and fur seals lounging on volcanic rocks. Even 200 years after Darwin's journey on the HMS Beagle, visitors continue to be astonished by the archipelago's stunning diversity. Ecotourism is central to everything on the 17 islands of the Galápagos National Park - the airport is made from mostly recycled materials and runs on wind and solar power, and each municipality has a strict sustainability plan.

3. Take some life lessons from the Aṉangu at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

At sunset, when its wavy walls blaze gold, Uluru looks like a ship on fire in a desert sea. Rising to 1142ft (348m), the sandstone monolith seizes your eyes from miles away. It's easy to see why it's a sacred site. The Aṉangu people, the area's original inhabitants, believe it's still home to spirit ancestors like the python woman Kuniya and the hare-wallaby people, the Mala. But it's become an icon to all Australians, a symbolic heart beating in the country's Red Centre. Until 2017, visitors were allowed to summit Uluru, which went against the wishes of the Aṉangu, who worried about degradation and climber injuries. There are dozens of far more rewarding things to do - join a ranger-guided walk past sacred waterholes; spot kangaroos hopping through the spinifex; and learn about the Aṉangu at the cultural center, where there is a fantastic display on tjukurpa, the creation period.

4. Experience life in the slow lane on the Okavango Delta

AThis beautiful wilderness is one of Africa's most compelling safari destinations. Each year, the floodwaters of the Okavango River arrive from the Angolan highlands and expand this unique ecosystem to almost 7722 sq miles (20,000 sq km), sustaining vast quantities of wildlife. Along with 4WD safaris, visitors can explore by powerboat and traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). As the mokoro is poled silently through the shallow reed-lined channels you are immersed in the environment, hearing every bird and animal call, witnessing the mightiest of elephants crossing your path and the smallest of frogs clinging to the grass. With development and visitor numbers in the delta strictly regulated to protect the environment, the Okavango is one of the most exclusive destinations on the planet. But for adventurous souls who can handle a 4WD and don't mind camping, there are affordable options within the delta's Moremi Game Reserve.

5. Sniff out geysers and grizzlies at Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone stinks. And it has no manners at all. The rotten-egg whiff taunts your nostrils; your ears are assaulted by a vulgarity of belches, burps and farts. But then, what do you expect when you're exploring the largest geothermal area in the world? More than 500 active geysers spout in Yellowstone's enormous, steaming landscape - Old Faithful being the most famous. And there are hot springs to visit - from the bloodshot eyeball of Grand Prismatic to the travertine shelves at Mammoth. The wildlife is perhaps an even bigger draw. This is like North America's answer to an African safari, although here the Big Five creatures are bison, bighorn sheep, elk, bear and wolf. Watching shaggy bison warming up by a thermal pool, catching sight of a grizzly bear across a meadow, or visiting in winter to glimpse wolf prints in the snow - all are quintessential Yellowstone experiences.

6. Emulate a pilgrim's journey to astonishing Lake Bled

It started with the pilgrims from afar who came to worship at the photogenic island church, it continued with the lakeside sojourns of 19th-century royalty and then of former Yugoslav President Tito who had a villa on the shores - and today, tourism to Slovenia's Lake Bled shows no signs of slowing. This blue-green body of water with a white church on a green island, abutted by a terracotta-roofed castle and backed by snow-daubed Julian Alps, is Slovenia's premier crowd-puller. The lake measures just 1.2 by 0.9 miles (2km by 1.4km), so walking or cycling around it is an easy 4 miles (6km). Hire a pletna (gondola), dive beneath the glass-like surface and stay over in one of many beautiful shoreside properties. Slovenia has won praise for eco-initiatives like ecologically designed Garden Village Bled, where a stream snakes through a collection of tree houses and glamping tents.

7. Marvel at the astounding power of Iguazú Falls

Marking the boundary between Argentina and Brazil, the Río Iguazú flows languidly through the jungle before plunging over a basalt ledge with such sudden, furious force that the planet's most awe-inspiring waterfalls are the result. On the Argentinian side, a boardwalk leads through jungle vegetation replete with butterflies and squawking parrots, passing a series of increasingly impressive falls until finally the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) comes into view. A visit is a jaw-dropping, visceral experience, and the power and noise of the cascades - a chain of hundreds of waterfalls nearly 2 miles (3km) in extension - live forever in the memory. Sunlight shines through the spray, creating multiple rainbows as the falling water ricochets up off the river below. The exhilarating cool mist, the high decibel roar and the thundering vibrations of crashing water remind you in no uncertain terms of the power and splendor of nature.

8. Find Hindu heaven at the temples of Angkor

A monument to human ingenuity and devotion, the temples of Angkor have an ability to inspire awe that rivals many of nature's contributions to this list's top 10. And so they should - Angkor Wat, the most famous of Angkor's sites, is a representation of Mt Meru, center of the universe and abode of Hindu gods. Imagine the wonderment of the ancient Khmer as they entered Angkor Wat for the first time: crossing the vast moat, peering up at the 180ft (55m) central tower, gazing at intricately carved bas-reliefs. Beyond Angkor Wat are more than 1000 temples and shrines, including Ta Prohm, its towers gripped by the jungle, and Bayon with its giant stone faces. The temples are the perfect fusion of creative ambition and spiritual devotion, and a point of pilgrimage for all Cambodians. Avoid the crowds with a visit in the wet season for (hopefully) that perfect Angkor sunrise.

9. Strike out on the salt of the earth at Salar de Uyuni

Imagine this: you're standing in the middle of the sky. Clouds above. Clouds below. Blue all around. That's what it's like at Salar de Uyuni, the world's biggest salt lake, after rain. The thin layer of water turns the utterly flat salt surface into a vast mirror. The horizon disappears and you seem to float. That's only one of the brain-bending experiences you'll have visiting these 4085 sq miles (10,582 sq km) of salt, high in the Bolivian altiplano. When the lake's dry, the white cracked immensity feels like a desolate, sun-scorched post-apocalyptic landscape. In the dry season you can visit the lake's two islands - Isla Incahuasi and Isla del Pescado - craggy husks of land sprouting with cacti. See too the geyser fields with boiling mud and sulfur steam. Several of the eerie high-altitude lakes, turned aquamarine from high mineral content, are home to flocks of flamingos.

10. Take a classic teahouse trek around Nepal's Annapurna Circuit

Nepal offers golden temples, charming hill villages, jungle wildlife watching, and the incredible walk around Nepal's Annapurna massif, which has long been considered one of the world's great treks. The scenery is mesmerising and the sense of journey is psychologically satisfying, starting in rice paddies and climbing through yak pastures before crossing the mighty snow-bound Thorung La pass. It's everything a good trek should be - challenging, majestic and inspirational. And at the end of the day some of Nepal's best lodges offer hot meals, apple pie and pots of milky tea. However, it's the side trips that make this a truly great trek, notably up to high-altitude Tilicho Lake or to the village of Ngawal, where terraces offer views of snowcapped peaks just across the valley. Build in a couple of extra days, shake off the crowds, and take your time - this is not scenery to rush through.

World Cup 2018: Moscow Travel Guide

World Cup 2018: Moscow Travel Guide

The controversial choice that the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place in Russia should not prevent millions of football fans to find their enjoyment.

From June 14 ‘til July 15, the best national teams worldwide will battle out in 64 games and across 11 cities who will be the next World Champion.

Maybe Portugal will be able to defend their title from 2014.

Most fans will watch the games from their home, but what about those who want to go to Russia?

This 2018 World Cup Moscow Travel Guide will provide you with information about getting around in Moscow, places to see while you are there and where to stay.

Getting Around in Moscow

The easiest way to arrive in Moscow is by plane. Moscow has 3 (!) international airports called Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo.

All of them are located about 40km away from Moscow’s city center. With the following options you can get from the airport to the city center.

Taxis will always be the most expensive method of transportation, but at the same time it is the most convenient. Especially if you carry a lot of luggage with you. Be aware of the influx of traffic during the FIFA World Cup in Moscow .

If you get stuck in the rush hour, you could be wasting a few hours. Pay attention to the taxi drivers. During this time, scamming tourist can be very popular but don’t be too paranoid.

Aeroexpress - Train

Depending on the airport, it will take you only a maximum of 45 minutes to get from the airport to the Moscow city center. Big advantage of riding the train will be not only be the price compared to taking a taxi, but that it is reliable.

It will arrive on schedule and you are guaranteed to arrive at your destination within less than an hour . You have to do the extra work though. Carry all that luggage inside the train and run into the danger to be in an overcrowded train.

Ride-sharing Apps

Download Uber, GetTaxi or Yandex Taxi and book your taxi via one of the apps. It is cheaper but offers the same convenience, if not even more, as the normal taxis from the airport.

The chance of running into a scam is literally zero. If you don’t have any mobile data to use on your smartphone, then use the free WiFi at one of the airports.

Pocket Wifi

For moving around easily, we recommend to use a pocket wifi for Russia it can make your life much easier.

Moscow Metro System

Once you are in the city center of Moscow, the best to get around is taking the metro. The cost of a single ride ticket is less than $1 USD. On a side note, Moscow has the biggest metro system worldwide.

With over 200 stations on 14 lines, you can get anywhere you want within Moscow. Don’t be shocked when looking at the map of the metro . Take your time and you will easily understand how to get around quickly.

Where To Stay In Moscow During The World Cup

Whenever you decided to go to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow, book your hotel room as soon as possible. At the time of writing this article, the hotel prices are starting from 3,780 Rubles ($65 USD) for a 2-star accomodation.

Go ahead and make a reservation to stay during the World Championship via a booking platform of your choice. I’d recommend either Booking.com or FIFA’s own booking platform.

If you are not sure yet if you are going, just book the hotel room in advance with booking.com already. If you make a reservation and decide later that you don’t need it anymore, you can make a cancellation for free. No risk involved booking in advance .

I have to give credit here where credit is due as the Russian Government set a minimum and maximum price for the World Cup . Hotels are not allowed to overcharge their rooms during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Where to eat

A trip to Moscow can be expensive in itself already due to the flight, and hotel rates during the popular time of the year. If you decided to cut costs to a maximum, then sticking to popular fast food restaurants might be your best bet. McDonalds, Burger King, KFC and Subway can be found next to Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts.

You can stick pretty comfortable to a daily food budget of around $30 USD. Just like everywhere else in the world, if you want fancy food or western food, you will crush that limit very quickly. If you feel like local food, then check out one of these places.

This chain is a typical russian buffet-style restaurant with a lot of restaurants within the city center of Moscow. All the food is premade but with a small difference. You pay what you get literally . You pay for each piece of bread, each salad, each side dish. They do not have English menus yet but maybe by the time the Cup is running, they will start to offer it.

If not, you can just simply point or pick the dish you want as you can see all their offers in front of you. You must eat to a lot to even pay more than $10 USD at Mu-Mu. Their special lunch set starts at only $5 USD. How do you know if a restaurants is any good? If the locals like to go eat there just like the Russians do at Mu-Mu.

Burger Heroes

Are up for some Russian-style burgers? Head over to Burger Heroes with delicious cheeseburgers at a reasonable price of less than $5 USD. If you are there, try their “ Agent 007” burger. It’s the bestseller! It’s a classic burger with cheddar cheese and bacon.

Who does not like crepes? With over 20 locations in the city center of Moscow, you can find some russian-styled crepes with a high variety of stuffings . The most popular crepes among the locals is the one filled with ham & cheese. Trust me if I say the crepes are like a full meal.

Things to do in Moscow

If you have some downtime between the games that you want to watch at the FIFA cup, then I’d recommend you to check out a few tourist attractions while you are there . You never know when you get back to Moscow.

The Kremlin

You just cannot miss out on the Kremlin . It is a must-see for every travelers. That’s all I can say to this.

The Moscow Metro

It’s very likely that you will take the metro while being in Moscow, but make sure to just stop for a few minutes and take a look at the beautiful architecture.

The Arbat Street

This pedestrian street belongs to one of the most famous streets in Moscow . Located in a very historic part of Moscow, it is filled with a lot of street art, museums, shops and restaurants.

Space Museum

With the latest hype around Elon Musk and his company SpaceX, many people got interested again into space travel. If you have a few hours to spare, check out the Moscow Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics.

Ostankino TV Tower

This 540m tall tower is the tallest building in Europe. Back in 1967 when it was finished, it was even the highest building the in world. Now it’s mainly acting as a television and radio tower with an observation deck open to the public (highest restaurant in the world) called “The Seventh Heaven”. If you’d like to have a fancy night out with some great food, then this restaurant might be the best choice for you.

Since you're here...

... we have a small favor to ask. If you enjoyed reading this article, we'd be glad if you share it with your friends on Social Media. Maybe they will be interested in reading the Moscow Travel Guide for the FIFA World Cup in 2018!
