Yokosuka's unique "local" cruise

Yokosuka Port has developed as a naval port since the landing of the U.S. Perry's fleet some 160 years ago. It is widely known as the port where the U.S. Navy facilities (Yokosuka Main Port) and the headquarters of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (Nagaura Port) were located.TRYANGLE Inc., a local cruse company, operates daily tours called “A CRUISE OF YOKOSUKA NAVAL PORT” to visit the above attractions. A CRUISE OF YOKOSUKA NAVAL PORT is the only cruising tour in Japan that offers a close-up view of U.S. Navy and Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels.

* Routes are subject to change.

A Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port

Views of Navy Fleet & Maritime Self-Defense Force

Jessica A Paje

“I Spy” a cruise boat from high atop Shiomi Toll Bridge by car, and on foot from the boardwalk at Verney Park! If you’re curious like me, you’ll just have to pay the fare to discover all that is lurking within this southern portion of Tokyo Bay. Besides the sound of the waves and the ocean breeze in your hair, A Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port is undoubtedly unique to the city. It is the only cruise in Japan that offers an up-close view of vessels from the United States Navy 7th Fleet and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The Port of Yokosuka evolved 160 years ago when Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States Navy sailed into Tokyo harbor aboard the frigate Susquehanna. In 1854, a treaty between Japan and the United States was signed which would allow trade and the opening of Japanese ports to U.S. merchant ships. In 1865, a Shogun government official by the name of Oguri Kozuke no Suke expressed the urgency of reforming Japan’s military and played a major role in developing a modern navy for the island nation. Soon after, the construction of Yokosuka Ironworks began and the Port of Yokosuka eventually became one of the largest naval ports in the world.

Last year, major improvements were made to the boardwalk adjacent to the shopping center and the area closest to the pier. Once a lackluster thoroughfare, the wooden deck was completely replaced, the pattiserie Chateraise was extended to include a small souvenir & ice cream shop, and Shioiri Terminal was created to accommodate passengers for A Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port on Seafriend. Not only is Shioiri Terminal the place to purchase tickets, you can also find unique souvenirs such as Yokosuka Curry, pins of the Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels, and Navy Beer. Or, simply relax in the café before your assigned departure time. At any rate, the area sprawls with visitors daily, come rain or shine.

A Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port is a popular place to visit among large tour groups. For this reason, you may want to line up early at the pier to find a great spot on the upper deck of the boat. The Seafriend can accommodate 80 people on the uncovered top deck and an additional 55 persons in the enclosed bottom deck. Total capacity can vary depending on the weather, too. Just be sure to dress appropriately and arrive prepared.

The cruise will take approximately 45 minutes and includes an educational narration (in Japanese) from the quirky crew. However, if you listen closely, you could still make out names of vessels ranging from submarines, destroyers, and if you’re lucky, the aircraft carrier. If you’re really interested in learning more about the vessels, I would recommend you jot down the number of the ship for research later. Or, use your smart phone to Google vessels during the tour. Just be careful it doesn’t fall into the ocean!

Shioiri Terminal hours are 10:00am to 4:30pm daily. Cruise departure times are 11:00am, 12:00am, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm. General admission is 1,400yen for Adults and 700yen for Elementary students. A discount is available for large groups. Small children are free and passengers requiring wheel chair assistance are most welcome.

To access A Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port, the closest train station is Shioiri on the Keikyu Line. Use the footbridge and walk across towards Shoppers Plaza (Daiei shopping center). The pier is on your left hand side. Or, 10-minute walk from either Yokosuka Sta (JR Line) or Yokosuka-Chuo Sta (Keikyu Line). By car, you can park at Shoppers Plaza. Bring your parking ticket to Shioiri Terminal for 2-hours free parking validation.

  • Nearby Spots

For about 170 years since Commodore Perry's arrival, Yokosuka Port has developed as a naval base. Daily cruise tours are conducted around Yokosuka Main Port, where the base of the United States Navy's 7th Fleet is located, and Nagaura Port, where the headquarters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is situated, allowing close-up views of various ships from the sea.

The approximately 45-minute tour on a cruise ship equipped with special anti-fog glass rooms and a covered second-floor deck offers a chance to see a variety of ships, including Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers and United States Navy Aegis ships. If the timing is right, you might even encounter rare vessels such as Antarctic observation icebreakers or submarines. Don't miss the live commentary inside the ship by unique guides who share trivia about the ships, Yokosuka's history, and tourist information.

The shop at the Shioiri Terminal, the departure and arrival point for the cruise ship, sells original goods themed on ships, retort curries, and snacks. Many products feature unique Yokosuka packaging designs, making them perfect souvenirs.

How to Get There

Located just two kilometers from New Mikasa Pier, the island is accessible by a 10-minute boat ride.

Catch a boat from Mikasa Pier, a 10-minute walk from Yokosuka Chuo Station on the Keikyu Line. It is about 45 minutes to Yokosuka Chuo Station from Tokyo's Shinagawa Station.

The boat service connecting the pier to Sarushima only takes about 10 minutes, and runs daily. An entrance and boarding fee is required.

So where are the monkeys?

This is the only genuinely natural island in Tokyo Bay (the rest are all reclaimed land), and despite its name, there are actually no monkeys to be found. Legend has it though that a pure white monkey appeared to guide the storm-tossed boat of the famous monk Nichiren to safety on the island in 1253, hence the name.

yokosuka boat tour

Exploring the island

Fortification remains include excavated earthen tunnels, a barracks, and an ammunition depot. Lots of the construction was done in red brick. Much is overgrown, covered with moss and ferns, as nature slowly reclaims the island. You can get further insights into the island and its history by visiting the small museum at the port.

Going further

Sarushima is a great place to spend just a few hours, but if you have an entire day to spend, make your way to the rockier areas of shoreline on the north side of the island where you can join Japanese families searching the tide pools for marine life. Just be sure to note the tide schedule, it rises quickly and can soak anyone who isn't paying attention.

'One of the single most terrifying things ever': Ontario couple among passengers on sinking tour boat in Dominican Republic

A Toronto couple are speaking out about their “extremely dangerous” experience on board a sinking tour boat in the Dominican Republic last week.

Brock MacKenzie and his partner, Kerri Wolanski, were enjoying a tour of the Haitises National Park caves on Monday, April 15 when they first noticed water seeping onto their boat.

MacKenzie said that he initially didn’t understand what was happening but soon realized the seriousness of the situation, as the boat was approximately 25 minutes from shore at the time.

  • Get the latest local updates right to your inbox

“I looked over (at Wolanski) and I’m like, ‘how are you getting wet?’ Like I couldn’t figure out where the water was coming from,” MacKenzie said in an interview with CTV News Toronto. “I happened to look around and the boat was sinking.”

MacKenzie said that there were around 30 other people on board the boat at the time – including at least one child and some seniors.

He said that most of the passengers were not wearing life jackets and that crew members “handed out rum” as the boat took on water.

“The craziest part about the whole trip was not the fact that the boat took on water,” MacKenzie said. “It’s that we left and nobody had lifejackets on, there was no safety, nobody talked about safety of this boat, what happens if [the boat was to take on water].”

Boat was taken to nearby island

The boat -- according to its operator Grupo Pinero -- took a blow to its hull on the starboard side, seemingly caused by a floating log.

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto, the company said that that the captain followed “all the protocols starting with the request for a rescue service, inspection of the ship, and following the rules by everyone on board.”

The company said that after inspecting the boat the captain then decided to take it to Cayo Levantado, a nearby island, while a relief boat was en-route to take the passengers back to shore.

yokosuka boat tour

“As soon as the boat’s captain realized the breakdown, he asked for support and followed all the protocols,” the statement notes.

Crew 'did nothing, they explained nothing'

Grupo Pinero said that its protocols requires all passengers to wear vests at all times but MacKenzie said that no one was wearing a lifejacket during the excursion. He added that over the 40 minutes that it took for the relief boat to arrive and safely transfer passengers, the crew “did nothing” to fit passengers with lifejackets either.

“We made sure that they all had lifejackets on,” he said about the children and senior citizens onboard. “The crew? Have no idea where they were.”

“…This was one of the single most terrifying things ever,” he said.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident and the passengers on board the boat all eventually made it back to shore safely.

When they did, MacKenzie said that Grupo Pinero asked passengers to sign legal documents about what happened. The document, an image of which was provided to CTV News Toronto, asked the passengers to agree that there was a “minor inconvenience” with the boat that was “immediately corrected” by the company.

According to MacKenzie, no one signed the document.

yokosuka boat tour

MacKenzie told CTV News Toronto that the tour was purchased through an Air Transat representative

In a statement, Air Transat said that they have been reaching out to all affected clients since the incident to offer a refund for the excursion, “and to personally ensure that the resolution of this matter meets their satisfaction.”

MacKenzie said that in the wake of the incident he is considering reaching out to a lawyer, as he’s concerned that the tour operator is not going to make necessary safety changes.

“Chalk it up to life experience or whatever,” he said. “But they’re not going to change what they do until somebody holds them accountable for the fact that it was extremely dangerous, what happened out there.”
