Mount Meru, situated east of the Great Rift Valley and about 40 km southwest of Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania's Arusha National Park, is considered an active volcano and is the country's second highest mountain. It is also considered the fourth highest mountain in all of Africa by some (after Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, and the Rwenzoris - aka the Mountains of the Moon). 500,000+ years ago, Mount Meru erupted in a tremendous explosion that destroyed it's cone shape and resulted in a horseshoe crater with the eastern side removed. The resulting mountain has its summit on the west side with it's inner walls rising over 1,500m from the crater floor, making them among the tallest cliffs in Africa. In the past 100 years, eruptions have been reported as the Ash Cone continues to build inside the crater. The first ascent is still in dispute and credited to either Carl Uhlig in 1901 or Fritz Jaeger in 1904.

Although this is a spectacular mountain with amazing scenery and wildlife, it's location in East Africa means that most international visitors will visit Mount Meru as a secondary trip in conjunction with their primary destination, usually Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, or the Ngorongoro Crater. Reasons to do this summit include: (1) amazing views into the summit crater and ash cone, (2) hiking along the crest of the crater rim, (3) nice, but distant, views of Kilimanjaro from the summit, (4) the ability to see a lot of wildlife on the lower slopes in the form of a walking safari, (5) the chance to escape the tourist crowds, and (6) for Americans, the ability to summit another peak taller than Mount Whitney . Arusha National Park provides certificates for people who summit the Little Meru sub-peak (3,820 m / 12,533 ft) or Socialist Peak - aka the Mount Meru summit. Although the name Socialist Peak is listed on the summit certificate, this name was rarely used and given that the Tanzanian government is moving more towards capitalism, it will probably never be more than a curiosity.

The 14 km (8.7 mi) or 19 km (11.8 mi) YDS class 2 Momella Route is the primary and only official route to the summit today. This route starts at the Momella Gate (1,500 m / 4,921 ft) and uses one of two tracks to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m / 8,250 ft), either a shorter 5 km YDS class 1 route or a longer 10 km YDS class 1 route that allows one to see more wildlife, scenery including waterfalls, and old huts. From the Miriakamba Hut, you take a 4 km YDS class 1 trail through some forests up to the Saddle Hut (3,566 m / 11,700 ft). From Saddle Hut, you can either summit Little Meru (3,820 m / 12,533 ft) or follow the route another 5 km YDS class 2 to the Mount Meru Summit, aka Socialist Peak. On the way up to the summit from Saddle Hut, the first notable bald area you'll reach is Rhino Point where you can get amazing views of the summit and the inner crater walls, providing there are no clouds. You'll know you are at Rhino Point because there is a pile of bones in the center of the clearing. The easy YDS class 2 portion of the hike involves crossing two moderately long low-angle rock slabs above Rhino Point. Also from Rhino Point to the summit, there are green blazes and arrows painted on the rocks to show you the way, however, these can be hard to see at night. There is a metal flag of the United Republic of Tanzania on the summit as well as a wood box and summit register.

Before Mount Meru was included in Arusha National Park in 1967 it was also possible to reach the summit via the North and West Slope s, however, use of these trails to enter the park (and reach the summit) is now illegal. It is, however, legal to climb the inner Ash Cone but the park only recommends this for researchers and issues a special permit for this activity.

Momella Route Trail Map : Zara Tours

  • Getting There

MOMELLA GATE: Most people who visit Arusha National Park make a visit to and stay at either Arusha (1,387 m / 4,550 ft) or Moshi (831 m / 2,726 ft), the closest towns to Mount Meru. The major international airports used to access these northern Tanzania towns include (order from most convenient to least): Kilimanjaro International Airport (code: JRO), Nairobi, Kenya (code: NBO), or Dar es Salaam (code: DAR). From either of the towns take the A23 (aka Arusha-Moshi Road) to Usa River Village about 10 km east of Arusha and just west of the Lake Jipe Bar. From here turn north on to the dirt access road and follow it about 30 km until you reach Momella Gate. The access road is fairly rocky so if you hire a car, a 4WD is recommended. There are no regular buses or public transportation to the park so you will have to walk, hire a car, hire a taxi, or hitch a ride. Often times you will be able to hitch a ride from the A23 junction as well as Momella Gate.

There are a considerable number of regulations you should follow to climb this peak, however, if you know the rules things can progress smoothly. A tour operator or trekking company is not required to climb this peak (unlike Kilimanjaro) so you can arrange everything yourself, however, many tour companies that offer Kilimanjaro treks also offer ones for Mount Meru and using one can make your life easier (though more expensive). Some tour operators offering Mount Meru trips include: Zara Tours , Dik Dik Hotel and Restaurant , and Ahsante Tours .

PARK FEES (MANDATORY): There are a number of mandatory fees that must be paid to enter this park and climb the mountain via the only official route, the Momella Route . Of course, you can attempt an illegal summit via the North or West Slopes to avoid the fees, but these are not as scenic as the official route.

Fee Type Amount Period Notes Entrance US$25 per day Although Mount Meru has been climbed in 1 day and 2 days is very reasonable, the park has a regulation stating that climbs of the mountain will take a minimum of 3 days with a recommendation for 4. This means you will need to pay more fees and it may be difficult to avoid if you are also getting a mandatory guide (armed park ranger). jrsteven notes that the park considers a "day" to be from dawn to dusk, not any 24-hour period. Hut US$20 per night There are nice huts at Miriakamba Hut (8,250') and Saddle Hut (11,700') that you can stay in or you can camp in the vincinity of the huts. The hut fees need to be paid whether you are using the huts or camping. Rescue US$20 per trek Self-explanatory :-) Guide US$15 per day Guides are mandatory for the Momella Route (the only official hiking route) to protect you from elephants and buffalo that you may run into on the trail. You can arrange for them at Momella Gate and all fees are paid to the park (not to the guide). Park Commission US$5 per trek This fee is listed in Lonely Planet, however, it did not appear necessary to pay this fee during a trip in January 2002 (Ref: John ).

All fees are quoted in US$ and should be paid in hard currency, preferably US dollars (travellers checks or cash). Before optional services such as a porter or tour operator, park fees come out to be US$185 for a 3 day trip or US$245 for a 4 day trip. If you hire a porter, you will also have to pay for their entrance and hut fees (US$1 / day, US$1.50 / night).

GUIDE / PARK RANGER (MANDATORY): As mentioned above, you are required to hire an armed park ranger to be your hiking guide. The primary reason for having an armed guide is to scare off any elephants or buffalo that you run into on the trail since these animals can easily kill or injure people. The porters take elephant encounters very seriously so if this is any indication, you should as well. It should be noted that the rangers do not carry radios though they have radios at the two huts. This means if you run into trouble on the trail, you may not have any help until you reach a hut.

jrsteven mentions "The armed guide, however, is a very good idea. We encountered numerous and very dangerous elephants and buffalos. Once, as were were descending, our guide held up his hand to halt us (like they do in the movies) and told us to go back a few hundred feet. A minute later an elephant crashed out of the underbrush near where we previously were standing, crossed the path, and plunged back into the bush. It made a very big elephant-sized hole in the bushes and trees. The guide said he saw the trees up the slope bending as the elephant was approaching. Exciting, to say the least."

HIKE START TIMES (MANDATORY): You can only begin your hike from Momella Gate between 9:00am and 3:00pm. This is to avoid conflicts with the wildlife in the park. These times are posted and if you arrive outside these times they will not let you in the park, even if you arrive at 3:03pm (Ref: John ). Furthermore, if you want to take the 10 km "long road" route up to Miriakamba Hut and do the entire trip in 3 days, you will need to start your hike by 10:00am on the first day.

  • When To Climb

Generally, the best times to climb this peak are from June to February with occasional rains in November. The dry season is from July to March. December to February generally offer the best views of Kilimanjaro which can often be seen from the summit and most places in Arusha National Park.

  • Camping and Accomodation

ON MOUNTAIN: The two established hut / camping sites are at Mirakamba Hut (2,514 m / 8,250 ft) and Saddle Hut (3,566 m / 11,700 ft). If you are going on a park sanctioned trip with the mandatory guide, you will most likely be staying at Miriakamba Hut on Night 1 and Saddle Hut on Night 2 and optionally Night 3. About the only ways you won't stay here is if some emergency happens. You can also camp in the vincinity of the huts. There are also huts for the rangers, caretakers, and porters / cooks here as well as a kitchen. The caretaker also sells spring water, beer, and Coke at mountain prices (e.g. 350 ml Coke at 1,500/= vs. 200/= (Tanzanian Shillings) in town in Jan 2002 - the exchange rate was US$1 = 900/=).

From jrsteven : "You really don't need porters if you are an experienced hiker with good equipment. Water is collected in rain troughs at the two huts - and at least in October [2001], the troughs were quite full. You just need to boil or filter the water before drinking it."

OFF MOUNTAIN / MOMELLA WILDLIFE LODGE : Near Momella Gate, just outside of Arusha National Park, there is a main lodge here with a restaurant, bar, and conference rooms in addition to a number of bungalows and chalets. You can rent a room or camp here. This lodge is run by Lion's Safari International who you can contact for availability and prices.

OFF MOUNTAIN / NATIONAL PARK RESTHOUSE: This resthouse is run by the Arusha National Park and offers both rooms and camping facilities. Contact Arusha National Park (contact info under Mountain Conditions Section) for reservations.

OFF MOUNTAIN / LOGISTICS CENTERS: Before and after your visit, you can always stay in Arusha or Moshi, the closest towns. Arusha is the primary logistics center for safaris and other trips to the Crater Highlands (e.g. Ngorongoro Crater), while Moshi is the primary logistics center for Kilimanjaro treks. The Mount Meru Novotel in Arusha is generally considered the best hotel in the area.

For those looking at climbing Mount Meru, here is a recommended itinerary that my family and i did early January 2005. We did the climb and safari in Tanzania through African Sermon Safaris: MOUNT MERU CLIMBING SAFARIS Mount Meru is located in Tanzania and is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. It is a great mountain to climb and offers spectacular scenery, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is unspoilt and less congested as compared to it's Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya counterparts. MOUNT MERU CLIMB Duration: 4 Days/3 nights Location: Mount Meru, Arusha, Tanzania Day 1: Arusha/Mariakamba Hut Mt.Meru Park Gate - Mariakamba: 4-5 hours Drive from Arusha to the Mt. Meru park gate where you will be met by our game ranger and porters. Hike for the few hours to Mariakamba Hut at 8,500 ft. From here you may wish to take an evening walk on the slopes to view wildlife at one of the watering holes in the crater. Dinner and overnight rest at Mariakamba Hut, L,D Day 2: Mariakamba Hut - Saddle Hut Mariakamba - Saddle Hut: 3-4 hours After breakfast hike to upto 11,500 ft to arrive at Saddle Hut. If time permits you can climb a little further on Mount Meru for a scenic view of the 'Roof of Africa', Mount Kilimanjaro. This will also be part of more acclimatization. Overnight at Saddle Hut, B,L,D Day 3: Saddle Hut - Summit - Mariakamba Hut Saddle Hut - Summit: 4-6 hours An early rise to hike all the way to the summit before the afternoon clouds cover the summit. From the summit, descend back to the 11,500 ft Saddle Hut in time for lunch. After lunch, hike down to Mariakamba Hut for dinner and overnight, B,L,D. Day 4: Mariakamba Hut - Arusha Breakfast at the camp and a leisurely morning. Descend to the park gate to connect with your waiting transfer vehicle back to your Arusha Hotel, continue with other programs or depart, B. You may consider contacting African Sermon Safaris. Hey everybody! We hiked Meru in December 2017 mostly based on the information found on Summitpost. As of 2011, when this page was last updated many things have changed, so you have to be aware of the followings: - it is not allowed to climb Mt. Meru without a guide any more; so the situation is similar to Kilimanjaro - in order to enter Arusha National Park to climb Mt. Meru you need to book through a Tanzanian tour-operator. They will ask for the voucher at the gate! - taxes MUST be payed by card!!! Cash is not accepted at any at the National Park gates. To do this you have 2 options: 1. you give the amount to the tour-operator in cash in advance, they put it on their TANAPA (TANZANIA NATIONAL PARKS) issued cards and they pay the taxes at the gate 2. you use your own cards: VISA and MasterCard are accepted, and to be fair work quicker than the TANAPA cards - guide and ranger are not the same thing! Both are compulsory. The guide is hired by your group through the agency. The armed ranger is assigned on spot by the park - depending on the size of the groups, several groups share one ranger. Each group separately pays the ranger-tax, regardless of the number of groups sharing the same service - no other personnel is compulsory: porter or cook; BUT if you choose not to go with the whole circus, be prepared that you should also provide (food) for your guide! (Not for the ranger) - as of 2018 the minimum days imposed for climbing Mt. Meru has been raised to 4. This is the no. of days you have to pay for when entering the park, no mater how fast you move - taxes and park-fees change every year - generally speaking become more and more expensive; from the following link you can download the latest edition: http://www.tanzaniaparks.go.tz/index.php/2016-02-03-12-27-41/2016-02-03-12-30-25 - taxes mentioned in the document do not include VAT; VAT must be added at the end - once payed all taxes and fees, you are empowered to use the huts at the 2 campsites without any additional costs: 4 person bedrooms with confy beds (no blankets, so bring sleeping bag), clean and modern bathrooms, dining area, water source; - in 2017 we payed the followings: 45$/person/day - conservation fee; 30$/person/day (not night!!) - hut fee; 20$/person - rescue fee; 15$/group/day - ranger fee; 2$/person/day - conservation and camping fee for all accompanying personnel (guide, porter, cook, driver) + VAT - not verifiable (couldn't find any legislation or park-rule on the internet) information, but it looked like everyone sticks very strictly to it: 1/2 guide per client ratio

They crew was very experienced and professional about the whole trekking experience. We had excellent equipment, enough food and water - want to mention that cook Sadique made the most delicious meals. The portable toilet proved to be a necessary addition as the public ablution was horrendous. Getting up to a hot coffee mug, followed by the health check, breakfast as we got the morning briefing. Snr. guide Omari is well grounded and led the trek very ably. He had everything under control and kept a close leash on the other guides, porters, cook and waiter. They all played their parts perfectly ensuring that we were comfortable and safe. The course was tough but we were up to the task. We all made it to the summit which is a great achievement. I attribute our success to the great preparation and wonderful support system that we got on the ground from the entire Zara team Read more Written 21 April 2024
  • MonaSY15 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A trip of a lifetime. We started planning our trip to Tanzania about six months before our actual trip. Benito, a Zara representative worked with us from the beginning to the end. In addition to being a wonderful writer which made our imagination about the trip go wild :) he was extremely responsive, creative, flexible, and caring about our well-being. He met us on the evening we arrived in Tanzania and made sure everything that was planned was actualized. We have had many individualized tours in the past but this one was one of the best. Everything worked exactly as planned. Our driver and guide, and now friend, was Issa. He was with us the whole week while on Safari. He is a safe driver and very knowledgeable about everything we were about to see and experience. He went out of his way to make sure our experience was safe and comfortable. Always making sure in every hotel, camp, and restaurant that there was fish on the menu (we don't eat meat). Waking us up early or late to go see the specific animals we wanted to see. He really cared about us and we felt we became family. We visited Lake Maniara, Lake Ayasi, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. We visited some Tanzanian tribes and we fell in love, especially with the Hadzade who are still able, with all the pressure on them, to keep their way of life. We visited the Maasai and fell in love with their friendly children. After the safari part of our trip, we flew to Zanzibar. One of the most beautiful islands with the most white sand and the warm water of the Indian Ocean. Benito, the Zara representative also arranged this part of the trip. Overall, an experience of a lifetime!!! The people, nature, and the animals in their natural habitat took our breath away!!! Thank you, Benito, Issa, Zara tour employees, and all the other Tanzanian people we met and befriended on our tour. 2 suggestions for improvement: 1. Most of the hotels we stayed at are Zara Tour establishments. A fact that drove some of the cost down. Most were beautifully located but needed to take more care of the details. Problems with water pressure. No screens on the windows to be able to open the windows (when no air conditioning is available), or just a broken window. 2. Because we stayed at their establishment, at times that meant a waste of a whole day to get us to their hotels that were not exactly on our route. We highly recommend Zara tours. Maybe one day we will be back again. Read more Written 31 March 2024

Dozens of safaris, hundreds of travelers, 23 years of service, and only one exceptional tour company - ZARA! Every aspect of their company is first rate - whether it's a Kilimanjaro climb, a Springlands Hotel stay, a multi-day safari, daily bus transport, a Safari Lodge or Wildcamp stay. I know - I've done every one of these with groups of 7 to 25. And I wouldn't think of using any other company. Every single ZARA staff member share with Zainab the owner the same friendly, courteous, and professional attitude. Joseph our daily driver was an absolute delight - friendly, knowledgeable, and very flexible. He was always very punctual and went everywhere with our group and patiently adapted to our hectic, oft-changing schedule with a smile and/or a laugh! Dozens of safaris over the years and every safari driver has been wonderful. Tarimo, Mohamed, Moses, and Deo are all exceptional and my absolute go-to guys! DO NOT, DO NOT even think of using any other tour company - there is a very good reason ZARA is again and again declared the best tour company in Tanzania! Read more Written 24 March 2024
  • spzzie 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome, Chameleon-Filled Day Tour to Materuni Waterfalls I highly recommend the one-day Materuni Waterfalls + Coffee Tour. We had Victor as our guide and he was awesome. Friendly, knowledgeable, and he introduced us to several chameleons along the hike. He also kept us hydrated with giant water bottles (seriously, they were gigantic) and entertained us with Swahili lessons, including the names of African animals and quirky phrases such as "cool crazy like a banana." The highlight of the tour was, of course, Materuni Waterfalls. It is stunning. Victor helpfully took pictures of us with the waterfall as a gorgeous backdrop. After, we stopped at Chimbo Point for a delicious lunch, followed by a coffee lesson and a chance to try banana beer and wine. We made our own coffee starting with white, unroasted coffee beans -- the freshest cup I'll ever have. The coffee guys were a lot of fun, though be prepared for a gentle sales pitch at the end – low pressure, just know that it's coming. A few tips: wear a lot of sunscreen and bug spray, and bring a hat. The hike can get hot but it's worth it for the payoff of that gorgeous waterfall at the end. Read more Written 12 March 2024

So many landscapes (mount meru, lake natron and ol donyo lengai) and animals (manyara, serengeti and ngorongoro). Also the guide for the mount meru was great and adapted the planning so that we could climb the summit of the mount meru (because there was a storm in the night and the ascension was dangerous). For the safari, the driver was excellent and adapted himself during the unexpected problems so that we could have the best experience possible. Such a great organisation! • zeen_mim 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles BEST Kilimanjaro Lemosho 8 day trek My husband and I enjoy mountain hikes and were very keen on trekkin Mount Kilimanjaro. We had previous experience from trekking Everest Base Camp and I can say that our experience with Zara tours surpassed all expectations and previous mountain trekking experiences. What I loved most about Zara was the feeling of being with a family; Everyone genuinely took care of each other. What I appreciated most about their leadership was the respect and bond they have with their workers. Zainab Ansell (aka Mama Zara), really cares about her workers and listens to their needs, we saw this first hand. Our tour coordinator, Erasto was superb at accommodating our needs and responding promptly to our questions. We fell sick when we reached Tanzania, and Erasto accommodated all changes with our Saffari tour and made our stay very comfortable. Everyone at the Springlands Hotel showed us immense compassion and made sure we were fully recovered for our hike to Kilimanjaro. I can’t remember all the names of the hotel personnel, but Amadeu, Modest, Elisha, Fatema, Doreen, Gi, Benyamin, Yoseph, Emanuelle, all the young trainees, Chefs and support staff had an amazing attitude ! Now for the hike, we successfully completed the Lemosho 8 day route. Mohammed was our lead guide. He possessed all the qualities you would expect to see in an exceptional guide; extremely knowledgeable, great sense of humour and professional. He was in tune with our capabilities, encouraged us continuously and set the right pace. Our health and safety always remained a priority for Mohammed. He maintained a very strong relationship with the porters and the assistant guide (Iddi). He briefed us every night and checked all of our vitals. As proud as we are for summitting Kilimanjaro, We have to be honest and accept that none of it would have been possible without Mohammed, Iddy and their team. I was experiencing some altitude sickness after the summit, and Mohammed and Saleem (porter) ensured I descended to a safe altitude in a reasonable time. The porters, Hamedi, Yahya, Saleem, Amani, Baraki, Besami were superb. They didn’t just set up our tent and feed us the best food (everything from Chinese, to meat chops, fried fish and doughnuts !), they helped us with our ascent and descent along the way. These guy have herculean strength and an amazing attitude. It was very humbling to spend time with them. When I was initially researching tours, I was a bit surprised with the tipping guidelines, but I very quickly realized during the trek, that the team DESERVES IT and more. I can’t recommend Zara Tours enough for their services. And I can’t wait to go back to Tanzania for more adventures with them! Read more Written 15 February 2024

  • alongtheroad 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tantalizing Tanzania Zara was subcontracted through World Adventure Tours and we couldn’t have been happier! We were the only two guests in our Land Cruiser and that was great for taking photos on all sides of the vehicle no matter where the animals were! We first had Victor as our guide and Godlove as our driver for our day tour around Moshi to the delightful Chemka Hot Springs, then a fun and informative coffee processing experience, and finally a nice hike to the lovely Materuni Waterfall. They were both very friendly and informative and made us feel very welcome and at ease in our new environment. Then after an night in Moshi and a two night stay at the wonderful Original Massai Lodge, our second driver and guide for the next week, Israel, picked us up and was with us through Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Crater before returning us to Arusha. The places we visited were all very different and all incredible! We were lucky to see so many animals and Israel was very patient with us as we asked him to stop multiple times each hour for photos!! He was helpful in letting us know the names of birds and even had a bird guide to look up any he didn’t know. He was always very friendly and kind and helpful. Got a little teary eyed saying goodbye! The lodges where we stayed were very authentic and comfortable, especially the Serengeti and Nrongorogoro Crater Wild Camps. The roads were in really rough shape, but Israel was a trusty driver who knew how to navigate the ruts and mud! The staff at the hotels and camps were all extremely attentive, welcoming and helpful. My only suggestion would be for Zara to add another camp closer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area so we didn’t have so much driving one of the days. Thank you for providing us a spectacular Safari in Tantalizing Tanzania! Read more Written 8 February 2024
  • janda2905 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent safari! We went to Tanzania with Tour Compass, but the safari was arranged locally with Zara Tours who were excellent. Our own tour guide (Michael M) was a superb guide, and he had a phenomenal knowledge of both the animals and birds. He was happy to drive us anywhere we wanted, but we tended to let him decide as he knew where the best places were for sightings, both in the Serengeti NP and Ngorongoro crater. He was great company too, and a brilliant driver/mechanic, who not only took care of us, but was also able to get us out of some serious holes (literally!), as the terrain was still pretty wet and muddy after the rains. The whole trip was amazing, from start to finish. Zaratours was very professional in their approach and we felt very taken care of. Not just the guides, but all the porters and crew where great people who always where ready to help out or just have some small talk. Everyone made sure that no matter how tough the different days where, everyone from our team was smiling and having a good time, and that was because of the zaratours crew, so thank you! It was challenging 7 day treck with at days (and during the final stage of the summit climb in total darkness) where i played with thoughts of giving up- but i didn't. The review is more about the amazing staff of Zara Tours and our guides Hussain and Gasper who supported us from day one to the last day of the climb. Also the rest of the dedicated team who took care of all of our needs. Can you believe that you can eat freshly prepared potato chips at an altitude of >4000m?? Yes, that is only a small portion of what our cook was able to prepare. I dont know how they did it, but, there was popcorn, warm soups, cooked meat, pancakes.... Everybody was amazing in accompanying us during the climb. Husain and Gasper are extremely experienced with the mountain and with climbers. They knew exactly when to suggest a break, would encourage if you feel insecure, would advise on the best path and during the descent I had knee pain and Gasper gave me his knee bands and hiking poles. Asante Sana! Read more Written 17 January 2024

Zara - Our only choice for more than 23 years!

Dear Guest Thank you so much for taking the time to share your incredible experience with ZARA! I highly recommend the one-day Materuni Waterfalls + Coffee Tour.

Dear Guest Thank you for sharing your experience of the Materuni Waterfalls + Coffee Tour! We're thrilled to hear that you had such a fantastic time with Victor as your guide. It sounds like he made your day truly memorable with his friendly demeanor, knowledge, and fun activities along the hike. We're glad you enjoyed the stunning Materuni Waterfalls and that Victor helped capture those special moments for you. It's great to hear that you also had a delicious lunch at Chimbo Point and enjoyed the coffee lesson, banana beer, and wine tasting. Making your coffee from freshly roasted beans must have been a unique experience! Thank you for the helpful tips for future travelers. We'll be sure to pass them along. We appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back for another unforgettable adventure in the future!

The trip was excellent.

Fantastic experience, All in all, no major challenges either before or during the journey. Our guide on the safari, Issa from Zara, was top notch and the experience would not have been the same without him. We were picked up and delivered punctually at agreed times, and he had great knowledge of animals, plants and what else we had questions about. We got to see all the animals we had hoped for and then some. Miriam and Oskar

Few people, great adventure – the mountain trek for nature lovers

Mt Meru climbing & trekking tours

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, often overshadowed by the eminent Mount Kilimanjaro. For nature lovers, though, beautiful Mount Meru offers an unforgettable adventure with its abundant wildlife and stunning views. It is more than just a place for a warm-up trek for Kilimanjaro. It is an overlooked mountain, deserving of a trek in its own right.

Trekking Africa’s fifth-highest mountain is an authentic and memorable experience. On the first day of a Mt Meru climbing tour, you can witness an array of wildlife in the dense forest. Look out for giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, colobus monkeys and antelope. As a bonus, as fewer people trek this mountain, it offers a more tranquil adventure. Moreover, you can complete the trek in just four days, leaving ample time to enjoy a safari or beach retreat afterwards.

At 4566m, this stratovolcano in Arusha National Park is as challenging as Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit stage contains a few manageable climbing sections. You do not need to be a mountaineer to trek Mount Meru. But you have to be fit and healthy with a solid determination to reach the top.

A mountain guide with years of experience trekking this mountain will accompany you. On day one, a park ranger will also walk with you to avoid close encounters with wildlife in the forest. Porters will carry all the heavy equipment, and a cook will prepare all your meals. At night, you will stay in basic huts located at two campsites.

The Momella route is the only path to the summit, and it is a fascinating trek. After passing through the forested band of trees, you enter a heathland, followed by an alpine desert. Once you reach the summit, the views from the crater rim are incredible. You can see the stunning Ash Cone and majestic Mount Kilimanjaro a short distance away.

SLEEP IN MOUNTAIN HUTS WHILE TREKKING MT MERU

Trek Mount Meru in four days and stay at two campsites: Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut.

At both campsites, there is a main building where meals are served. A selection of wooden huts accommodates four to six people, dormitory-style. The huts have electric lights, mattresses, cold running water and basic toilets but no heating. A warm sleeping bag with a temperature rating of ‑12 °C is required; you can hire one from us. Showers are unavailable. However, our mountain team will prepare warm water in a bowl for you to enjoy a morning wash.

While there are electric lights, there is no electricity supply at the mountain huts to recharge batteries. At high altitudes with cold temperatures, batteries drain quickly. We therefore recommend bringing one or two fully charged power banks with you to charge your devices.

What to expect on a Mt Meru trekking tour?

Before commencing the trek, our Trekking Operations Manager will thoroughly brief you about the safety procedures and route. It is an excellent time to ask questions. As standard practice, your trekking gear will be inspected to ensure your comfort and safety on the mountain. If you require extra equipment, you can rent it from us.

When trekking the mountain, you need a smaller day backpack with the basics such as suncream, water, snacks, and rain clothes. Our porters will carry all the other equipment, food, and luggage ahead of you.

Our mountain guides have climbed the mountain dozens of times and are responsible for your safety. They are experts at reading the weather and how the trekkers in the group are faring. If someone is injured or suffering acutely from altitude sickness or if there is extreme weather, they will call the climb off.

Our incredible cooks prepare breakfast, lunch, hot drinks, snacks, and a three-course dinner. Water from mountain streams is boiled before you drink it.

Which routes can I take on Mt Meru?

The Momella route is the only pathway to the summit of Mount Meru. It derives its name from the eastern Momella Gate, which marks the beginning of the trek.

Having been registered at the gate by your guide, you will traverse the southern loop of the route through the forest, where you can spot colobus monkeys, buffalo, giraffes, and many other species. Along the way, you will pass through the heart of a massive fig tree, Malo Falls, and Kitoto viewpoint before reaching Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend your first night.

The second day of the trek takes you through a diverse heathland and moor landscape. As you continue climbing, you will enter the alpine desert zone before arriving at Saddle Hut.

On day three, you will pass Rhino Point to reach the crater rim. The views are spectacular as you follow the horse-shoe-shaped crater rim to arrive at Socialist Peak. After reaching the peak, you will retrace your steps back to Saddle Hut before continuing your descent to spend the night at Miriakamba Hut.

On the fourth and final day, you will descend via the northern section of the loop and conclude your trek at Momella Gate.

What does a typical day look like?

On the first morning of your Mt Meru climbing tour, you will be driven to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. You begin the exciting four to five hours through the forest from here. It is an exhilarating day. You climb 1000m with wildlife all around you. At Miriakamba Hut, you enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the first night on the mountain.

On day two, the trek starts after a hearty breakfast. You enter the heath and moor landscape and steadily climb 1050m to Saddle Hut in three to four hours. From there, you can choose to hike to and from Little Meru if you feel energetic.

Day three is the longest day on the mountain. At midnight, you set off for the summit. After four to five hours and climbing 1012m, you reach Socialist Peak to watch the sunrise. Having enjoyed this unique experience at the summit, you return to Saddle Hut to rest and nourish yourself before continuing down the mountain to Miriakamba Hut. After ten to fourteen hours of trekking and descending 2062m, you enjoy another scrumptious evening meal before falling deeply asleep.

On the final day, you trek another 1000m through the forest to arrive at Momella Gate within two to three hours.

When is the best time to climb Mt Meru?

Mount Meru is trekkable almost all year round. However, the dry season, from June to October, is the best time to trek Mount Meru. Generally, the weather is perfect for a trek, safari, and beach retreat. Another good trekking period is during the short dry season, from January to February. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru usually does not get busy even during the high season – an exclusive experience.

Tanzania experiences two rainy seasons. The long rains happen from mid-March to mid-May, and the short rains from November to December. Trekking Mount Meru may not be possible in April, May, and November due to heavy rain creating dangerous conditions.

How fit do I need to be to climb Mt Meru?

The summit of Mount Meru is more than 1300m lower than Mount Kilimanjaro’s. Therefore, you will be less prone to altitude sickness on Mount Meru than on Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the crater rim and summit are more technically demanding than on Mount Kilimanjaro. Do not let this put you off, though, as it is still an achievable challenge.

In terms of fitness, you need to be fit and healthy enough to trek for four to five hours each day. You will also need the added stamina to hike for up to ten to fourteen hours on the day you ascend to the summit. A strong will to succeed is also essential.

Other things to know before you go

Planning guides.

Once you have booked your trek with us, we will send you pre-departure information to help you prepare for your trek, one of which is a comprehensive packing list .

Tipping the mountain crew

Tipping the mountain crew, who play a vital role in helping you reach the summit, is customary. If you feel that the team’s effort deserves recognition, offering a tip would be a kind gesture appreciated by the mountain team. We will provide instructions on how much to tip, when, and how to do it.

Emergency services

The mountain rescue services in Tanzania are less advanced than those in Europe. What’s more, helicopters are rarely used. It is, therefore, crucial to obtain comprehensive travel insurance that includes rescue and repatriation coverage.

Age restrictions

Children under ten can trek to Miriakamba Hut. Ten to sixteen-year-olds can go as high as Saddle Hut, whilst those over sixteen can hike to the summit. A parent must accompany all children. There is no upper age limit, but it is recommended that those over sixty should have a medical check-up before trekking Mount Meru.

Combined trek, safari, and beach retreat

A popular combination of Tanzanian activities includes trekking Mount Meru followed by a safari or hiking Mount Meru followed by a beach retreat. Get in touch with our team to get trip suggestions for the whole package.

Rain forest trail

Amazing trek to the 4,566 mt summit of Mt Meru. Not an easy walk but beautiful amidst different scenery, some of them fairy-tale like. We were well looked after by our ranger and Tanzania-Experience made sure that everything was taken care of. I will definitely by back to this beautiful country and its cheerful people that are so proud of their country and take so much care of their natural environment. I will surely use Tanzania-Experience again!

It’s famous for being a rewarding climbing experience and offering stunning vistas of its surroundings, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is part of the Arusha National Park, providing trekkers with opportunities to spot wildlife like colobus monkeys, giraffes, and various bird species along the trail. Climbing Mount Meru is often considered a great warm-up for those planning to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro, due to its elevation and diverse ecosystems, which include lush forests, moorland, and alpine desert zones. Here are features that make mount Meru unique and famous:</p><h2>Climbing Destination</h2><p>Mount Meru is renowned as an excellent trekking and climbing destination. Its challenging terrain and varying landscapes make it an attractive option for adventurers looking to experience a different side of Tanzania’s natural beauty. The ascent offers trekkers a diverse range of environments, including lush rainforests, heathlands, moorlands, and alpine deserts, each with its own distinct flora and fauna.</p><h2>Stunning Views</h2><p>One of the highlights of climbing Mount Meru is the spectacular views it offers. From different vantage points along the way and especially from the summit, trekkers are treated to breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding landscapes. On a clear day, you can witness vistas of the distant plains, the Great Rift Valley, and even catch glimpses of the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.</p><h2>Wildlife Encounters</h2><p>The Arusha National Park, where Mount Meru is located, is home to a variety of wildlife. Trekkers often have the opportunity to spot animals like colobus monkeys, giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, and a diverse range of bird species during their climb. This unique combination of hiking and wildlife observation makes the experience even more enriching.</p><h2>Less Crowded Alternative</h2><p>While Mount Kilimanjaro attracts a larger number of climbers, Mount Meru offers a quieter and less crowded experience. This can be particularly appealing to those seeking a more intimate trekking adventure and a chance to connect closely with nature and the environment.</p><h2>Acclimatization for Kilimanjaro</h2><p>Many climbers choose to tackle Mount Meru before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro. The higher altitude and diverse landscapes of Mount Meru provide a valuable opportunity for acclimatization, helping climbers adjust to the effects of high elevation before taking on the more challenging ascent of Kilimanjaro.</p><h2>Cultural and Natural Diversity</h2><p>The trek up Mount Meru introduces climbers to the rich cultural heritage of the local Meru people and offers insights into their traditional way of life. Additionally, the ever-changing landscapes showcase the incredible natural diversity of the region, from dense forests to arid alpine zones.</p><h2>Summit Experience</h2><p>The summit of Mount Meru, called “Socialist Peak” stands at an elevation of around 4,562 meters (14,968 feet). Reaching the summit is a rewarding accomplishment, and climbers are often greeted by a sense of accomplishment and a panoramic view that includes the sunrise over the surrounding landscapes.</p><h2>Flora and Fauna</h2><p>The diverse range of ecosystems on Mount Meru supports a variety of plant and animal species. As climbers ascend, they pass through montane forests, where they can observe rare and endemic flora. Above the treeline, the landscape transitions into heathlands and moorlands, providing a unique opportunity to see different types of vegetation.</p><h2>Challenging Terrain</h2><p>While Mount Meru is not as high as Mount Kilimanjaro, it still presents challenges in terms of elevation gain and rugged terrain. Climbers must navigate rocky paths, steep slopes, and potentially changing weather conditions, making the ascent physically demanding and mentally stimulating.</p><h2>Guided Treks</h2><p>Climbing Mount Meru usually requires booking guided treks through licensed tour operators . These guided expeditions ensure safety, proper acclimatization, an adherence to park regulations. Guides and porters provide essential support throughout the journey.</p><p>The climb typically involves camping at designated campsites along the route. This camping experience adds an element of outdoor adventure, allowing climbers to connect more intimately with the environment and spend nights under the stars.</p><h2>Varied Routes</h2><p>Mount Meru offers several routes to the summit, each with its own characteristics and attractions. The choice of route can influence the overall experience, scenery, and level of challenge encountered during the climb.</p><h2>Cultural Interactions</h2><p>During the climb, trekkers have the opportunity to interact with local communities and gain insights into their customs and way of life. This cultural exchange adds depth to the trekking experience and fosters a deeper connection to the region.</p><h2>Trek Mount Meru with Zara Tanzania Adventures</h2><p>Mount Meru’s fame extends beyond its elevation and stunning views. The mountain offers a multifaceted experience encompassing physical challenges, diverse landscapes, wildlife encounters, cultural interactions, and a sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit. It’s a destination that appeals to those seeking both adventure and a deeper connection to nature and local culture.
