Lion Country Safari

Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, in rural Palm Beach County just west of West Palm Beach. At the time it was the first drive through safari park in the United States and introduced a new concept to animal lovers, The Cageless Zoo .  Lion Country Safari was originally developed by a group of South African and British entrepreneurs who wanted to bring the experience of an African game park, then and now an expensive and time-consuming trip, to South Florida families who would otherwise not be able to experience an African safari.

Lion Country Safari

West Palm Beach

The first cageless drive-through safari in the country, this incredible animal park puts you in the cage (ie your car) as 900 creatures roam freely, staring at you . Equal parts conservation area and safari, the park's 500 acres are home to bison, zebra, white rhinos, chimpanzees and, of course, lions. You tour in your car (unless it's a convertible, in which case short-term rentals are available), driving slowly, hoping the animals approach the vehicle.

The best time to go is when it rains, because the animals are more active when it's cool. The park is 20 miles west of downtown West Palm.

Suspected mountain lion caught on video prowling in North County neighborhood

A n Escondido family got a huge surprise after their doorbell camera captured what they say is a mountain lion roaming around on their front porch earlier this week.

The event happened early Thursday morning near Rockwood Road and Old Ranch Road. In the video, the animal can be seen approaching the door before turning left into the side yard.

The Reisner family says when they heard the Ring alert, they thought it was a package being delivered to their home, which is not that far from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

"You could go there and see animals like that," Aaron Reisner said, referring to the Safari Park. "That was a majestic cat. It looked so beautiful, and so to see it out in the wild like that, it was awesome."

The family says they have seen bobcats, deer and coyotes in their neighborhood, but this is the first time they've seen what appears to be a mountain lion.

"I just posted on Nextdoor, and kind of just texted some of my neighborhood friends, just because of the fact that there are people that get up and go jogging in the morning, and there are kids riding their bikes and walking to school," Katie Reisner said. "I just wanted to make sure everybody was aware of it because if that catches you off guard, it's not a fun surprise."

This event comes after a mountain lion was spotted on camera prowling the streets of downtown Oceanside last month. A few days later, a mountain lion was found dead in the city after being struck by a car. It has not been confirmed whether the killed mountain lion is the same one caught on camera.

Two weeks ago, a 21-year-old man died in a mountain lion attack in a remote area northeast of Sacramento in Northern California. It was the first deadly encounter with a mountain lion in the state in two decades. The man's 18-year-brother, who was also attacked, was expected to recover , authorities said.

What to do if you encounter a mountain lion

If you're going to be moving around, such as hiking or camping in mountain lion country, Megan Senour, human wildlife conflict specialist at the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, suggests going with another person or in a group, make noise, talk, or play music to avoid a surprise interaction, which is usually when those interactions occur.

"A lot of folks recreate in mountain lion country without incidents. So it really is — to emphasize — it's incredibly rare for there to be even an interaction in general. Mountain lions want to avoid us just as much as we want to avoid them. They don't want to see us — the weird two legged hairless creatures walking around. We're just as odd for them as they are for us for seeing them," Senour said.

Most mountain lion interactions do tend to involve pets or small animals, according to Senour.

Make sure you're not letting your pets into the backyard by themselves and are closely monitoring them, keeping them on leashes and indoors whenever possible, she said.

"We typically have rule of thumb for leash walking is nothing that's longer than 6ft and it's non retractable," she said.

A mountain lion was caught on Ring video roaming around a porch in Escondido on April 4, 2024.

Your guide to the Milwaukee County Zoo, from free days to events

zoo lion country safari

The Milwaukee County Zoo has been a local institution since it started as a small mammal and bird display in Washington Park in 1892 . The zoo moved to its current location at 10001 W. Blue Mound Road in 1958, and it's now the go-to summer destination for tons of families who flock to the playground, ride the train, collect the Mold-o-Rama souvenirs, and, of course, see their favorite animals.

Here's what you should know before you visit.

How much does it cost to get into the Milwaukee zoo?

The Milwaukee County Zoo has a flex pricing structure, with prices fluctuating depending on estimated attendance. That means times that are typically busier — such as weekends or summer months — will have higher ticket prices, whereas ticket prices will likely be cheaper on, for example, weekdays in winter.

For example, for an April zoo visit, prices for an adult general admission ticket range from a low of $11.50 mid-week to a high of $16 on weekends. Current estimates for a June visit (which are subject to change), however, have a similar mid-week low of $11.50, but a high of $19 for a weekend visit.

Prices for each upcoming week (Friday through Thursday) are set every Thursday at 3 p.m., and the zoo recommends buying tickets online ahead of time for the best choice of dates, times and prices. However, tickets purchased ahead of time are only valid for the date printed on the ticket and are nonrefundable.

Guests who need to change the dates of their visit after purchasing advance tickets should email [email protected], although availability on a different day is not guaranteed. And if the new date is more expensive than the original ticket, guests must pay the difference.

Milwaukee zoo free days

The zoo announces several free days periodically throughout the year, including a few select family free days. The zoo has also occasionally hosted Frosty Free Week — free admission during the week between Christmas and New Year's. Here are some days when specific people are offered free admission:

  • Mother's Day: Moms receive free admission
  • Father's Day: Dads receive free admission
  • Senior Safari: Visitors age 60 and older receive free admission on select days in June.
  • Military and Veterans Family Day: Each year, a day is dedicated to all military service members, veterans and their immediate families (10 tickets per family) who receive free admission and parking. Tickets must be obtained through local county Veterans Services offices.

How much does parking cost at the Milwaukee County Zoo?

Parking at the zoo costs $15 per car and can be purchased online or at the zoo's entrance. The zoo's main entrance and walk-in entrance are open year-round. The zoo's west entrance is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and is used to expedite entry for Zoo Pass members and those who buy tickets ahead of time.

The zoo is working through a design and planning process that will result in a revamped parking and ticketing system to ease the congestion that occurs at the main parking lot entrance on busy days.

What is a Zoo Pass, and what benefits are included?

But, if the people in your group of four to six people each choose one favorite animal to see, a zoo trip can comfortably be done in three to four hours. Add in a break for lunch, a stop at the wildly popular playground for the kids and a trip on the zoo train, and you have a daylong outing on your hands.

  • The Sky Adventure zip line and ropes course , which is open daily in summer (weather permitting), and costs $15 per person plus tax for the ropes course; $20 per person plus tax for the zip line; $30 per person plus tax for the zip line and ropes course combo; and $10 per person plus tax for the Sky Tikes ropes course.
  • The Sky Safari sky glider , which is open (weather permitting) daily March through November, and costs $4 per person to ride. Riders must be at least 3 years old.
  • The Gorilla Trek virtual reality experience is a 360-degree virtual reality film with motion platform seating that follows mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It costs $6 per person.

Wild Connections tours are behind-the-scenes guided tours of different animal areas. Prices and activities vary by program. Examples include:

  • Take Flight Bird Feeding , where visitors can feed fish to the mustached Inca Terns
  • Giraffe Jamboree , where visitors can get up close to giraffes as they feed them an afternoon snack
  • Predators of the African Plains , where visitors participate in a training session with either hyenas or lions
