Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, take another trip to the end of the world with sony’s stellar blade.

about world trip game

A weak year for video games so far should get a little bit of a jolt from Sony and Shift Up’s “Stellar Blade,” available this week exclusively on the PS5. Inspired by all kinds of post-apocalyptic gaming, it sometimes feels like a blend of “The Last of Us,” “Fallout,” and “Final Fantasy,” and those influences alone mean it will have fans. It’s a game with some refreshingly fun gameplay and intriguing world-building that’s equally hampered by some clunky mechanics and repetitive settings. However, “Stellar Blade” is a game that rewards patience—just when you get completely exhausted by something it’s been doing for a few hours, you discover that the developers buried some surprises in how their narrative unfolds.

It’s a game I was ready to discard as a disappointment relatively early, but that opened up right around then into something more ambitious and engaging. Some aspects still feel remarkably unrefined, but they become easier to ignore in favor of what does work about this odd RPG hybrid. It’s a weird game, but there’s something increasingly addictive about exploring its weirdness, battling Lovecraftian monsters on a mission to save the entire planet.

"Stellar Blade" is set deep in a future in which the planet has been overrun by creatures known as the Naytiba; you play Eve, a cyber-soldier sent back to Earth to try and reclaim it. In the game’s first encounter/tutorial, Eve loses her soldier partner, making her a lone wolf for the first few hours of the game. Set in a rain-shrouded city, you’re taught the basics of combat here, which is built around a light/heavy attack system that relies heavily on parrying and dodging. Timing a parry perfectly helps build a meter that unleashes special attacks that can be upgraded and customized through a skill tree. You have a drone partner who can help find items and objectives in the environment, but enemies and combat start to get very repetitive in the early hours , just before the game speeds Eve off to a new environment, gives her new friends, and eventually even new ranged weapons.

about world trip game

Once “Stellar Blade” really gets going, it’s a relatively familiar open-world/RPG structure wherein side missions can be alternated with the main story ones to gain items, currency, or skill points. Like a lot of games like this, some of the side missions are ridiculously simplistic—in one, I swear I literally just walked across the main city of Xion (the last standing on Earth) and walked back again. Still, the story missions start to take on an intriguing variety of game styles. The bulk of the story after here is set in what are basically dungeons, where the game becomes more of a traditional shooter and even a platformer. The shooting elements are fun, but the platforming ones can be infuriating in a game where jumping doesn’t always seem precise, and the basic physics are a bit janky. The difficulty spikes with some bosses can be a bit maddening, too.

Visually, “Stellar Blade” is a fascinating mash-up of elements that truly work with backgrounds that look nearly incomplete. Why make a game that has such strong visuals at times become a series of repetitive sand environments? Why do we have yet another body-part-exaggerated heroine who appears to have been designed by a team that has never seen an actual woman? And yet some of the creatures in this game are riveting, alien/zombie beings that look like they crawled out of the upside down on “Stranger Things” (I mean,  just look  at that thing in the still above, a boss that killed me many, many times). And some of the dungeons feel like descending into the Umbrella Corporation in an early “ Resident Evil ” game or movie. (That's a compliment.) Like so many elements of “Stellar Blade,” everything that doesn’t work is balanced (or maybe that should be "parried") by something that does.

I’ll admit to not being entirely done with “Stellar Blade” yet, but I think that balance of good and bad will likely continue through the closing credits. It’s just one of those games that might not completely work at all times but keeps you entertained with a controller in your hand even when you know it’s clunky. Ultimately, that’s all that matters, especially in a year with so little to play.

Sony provided a review copy of this title. It will be released exclusively for the PS5 on April 26 th .

Roblox: A Dusty Trip - 5 Beginner Tips

From how to avoid the storms to which weapons work best against mutants, we offer the best tips and tricks for Roblox: A Dusty Trail.

Quick Links

Know the hidden controls, check every structure for supplies, learn how to avoid the storms, keep a weapon on hand, take care of your car.

The Roblox spin-off of the popular 2019 game, The Long Drive, A Dusty Trip is an apocalyptic road trip that is all about the journey. Your goal is to travel as far as you can in a barren wasteland, trying to scavenge items like food, weapons, and gas for your vehicle; all whilst dealing with angry mutants and natural disasters.

Roblox: Doors - How To Unlock Detour To Reach The Backdoor

Whether you do it with friends or alone, A Dusty Trip can be hard to master, but the journey is worth it. If you are just starting out on the desert roads, we've got some beginner tips to make it a little easier.

A Dusty Trip isn't exactly an open book when it comes to its controls, but knowing what you can do and how will make the game much easier. Besides the basics, here are the lesser-known abilities the game doesn't tell you about.

There are several different building types in The Dusty Trip, from garages to stores and even gas stations. These can contain necessities, such as food, fuel, and weapons , and are easy to spot while on the road.

Gas stations will even have several slightly filled gas pumps that you can use. Food is especially important , as once your hunger hits zero, you will start to rapidly lose health.

On the unfortunate chance that the building has nothing useful, you can just hop right back into your car and keep going.

If you have Robux to spare, using the walky-talky in your car will give you the option to have your chosen supplies dropped off for you.

Most structures will contain at least one mutant , so come prepared.

There are numerous natural events in The Dusty Trip that can be extremely detrimental to your journey. These include sandstorms, eclipses, thunderstorms, heat waves, tornadoes, and drive-by-shootings, which can all spawn at any time .

Mutants, and later bandits, are the game's main enemies. Mutants often guard buildings and can kill you quickly if several of them gang up on you.

To traverse and scavenge safely, you will need a weapon. Luckily, there are many to choose from, though some are better than others.

Items such as bowling balls, kettlebells, fly swatters, fire axes, wooden spears, and several different types of guns can be found in buildings.

Any gun, especially the shotgun, will be the best method for killing mutants , but they can be rare to find and have limited ammo.

Your car can also be used as a weapon to ram mutants.

If you are forced to run, mutants will run faster than you unless you are sprinting , but they will temporarily stop each time you jump .

The Golden AK can be bought for 99 Robux in the starting house. However, buying this is single-use and will only apply to your current run; if you restart, you will have to buy it again .

Your vehicle, whether it be the starter car or one bought with a game pass, is undoubtedly your most important asset in The Dusty Trip.

When starting, you can choose from a small Sedan, found in front of the garage, or a van, found behind it.

The van uses diesel and is slower , so unless you have a surplus of players, the small starter car is the best to use . Additionally, diesel is much rarer to spawn than normal gas.

You can also buy other vehicle options with Robux , including the Exotica, Quadbike, and Flametruck, which all have their own benefits and are most often better than the free choices.

The Exotica and Flametruck especially will exponentially change the game.

You will have to keep track of your radiator, engine, and fuel levels , so be sure to have backups with you incase you get stranded. These take water, oil, and gas or diesel respectively.

Next, be weary of your driving and always be alert; a single rock or spare item on the road might completely flip or dismantle your car if you aren't careful. Once that happens, it's pretty much game over.

And finally, the most important one: remember to use your emergency brake . Otherwise, you might find yourself chasing after a car that is rapidly rolling away.

The school's principal, Dan Hass, informed parents that the student was attending the Robotics World Championship, according to reporting by the Oakland County Times .

“Our hearts are very heavy as we mourn this loss," Hass said, per the outlet. "We will be ready to meet the needs of our students and staff Monday morning.”

Kirby noted in the statement that Lake Orion High School and Lake Orion Community Schools have crisis teams that will be ready to "help with the needs of students and school personnel."

"We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support our high school students through this tragedy," Kirby shared.

Authorities in Houston told USA TODAY a 16-year-old boy from Michigan died as a result of an apparent suicide Friday evening.

The teen's official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Harris County Coroner Coroner's Office.

In May, All Eyes (and Wallets) in the Art World Turn to New York

Other cities have game, but springtime in the Big Apple brings a concentration of fairs, auctions and shows without parallel.

A painting of people walking through a museum and looking at art while a cityscape is in the background.

By Ted Loos

Sometimes it seems as though the collectors, dealers, curators and advisers who power the art world will fly anywhere on the map to see a show or buy an artwork. Even a deadly pandemic could only delay the proliferation of events of a truly global market.

In March, the art fair buffet included Frieze Los Angeles , Art Dubai and Art Basel Hong Kong , but there also were major auctions in London. This month, the opening of the legendary Venice Biennale was the noncommercial center of gravity, though buyers had opportunities at art fairs in Brussels, Chicago and Dallas.

But in May, that diffusion turns to concentration, and all eyes turn to New York for what may be the busiest single art month of the year anywhere, including hubs like Los Angeles and Miami.

“Our business is cyclical, and May is a peak,” said David Zwirner, one of the world’s most powerful dealers, who runs multiple spaces in New York and in other art capitals like Paris, London and Hong Kong.

“There’s a psychology that’s been grandfathered in for collectors,” Zwirner said. “This is the time they are forced into making decisions. A couple times a year, they are ready to step up. If I’m honest, I don’t have that in January.”

It all started with auctions.

Since the late 1970s, Sotheby’s and Christie’s , the two auction behemoths, have staged some of their most important Impressionist, modern and contemporary art sales in New York in May (November is the other prestige season).

The same is true this year, with the big sales scheduled for the week of May 13. At Sotheby’s, the 1966 “Portrait of George Dyer Crouching” by Francis Bacon goes on the block, and at Christie’s one major offering is the Brice Marden abstraction “Event” (2004-7); both paintings are estimated at $30 million to $50 million.

Since 2012, when Frieze New York was established, art fairs have also clustered in the city in spring, syncing their schedules to take place close to the auctions and their attendant previews.

Now, Frieze New York (Thursday through May 5) is closely followed by the New York edition of the European Fine Art Foundation fair, TEFAF New York (May 10-14) and the Independent (May 9-12), plus at least a half-dozen more around the city.

The primary reason for the activity, Zwirner said, is a deep bench of buyers. “There are some buildings on the Upper East Side with more collectors than in some midsize European towns,” he said.

Pamela Joyner, a philanthropist and collector known for her focus on abstract art by African Americans and members of the global African diaspora, said she thought that recent power shifts in other places reinforced New York’s primacy.

Those shifts include the emergence of Seoul as an Asian art market capital to rival Hong Kong, and the complicated post-Brexit status of London — where the modern art market arguably started in the 18th century, when Sotheby’s and Christie’s were founded.

“New York is the safe haven,” said Joyner, who splits her time between the city and the Lake Tahoe area in Nevada. She serves as a trustee for four museums, including the Museum of Modern Art.

“I think New York is more the center of the art world now than it has been the last decade,” she said. “With all of this movement, there’s a default or consolidation to what is known.”

The season’s familiar rhythms are a bonus, she said. “The predictability of the schedule is a safety blanket,” Joyner added.

J. Tomilson Hill, a managing director of the hedge fund Two Sigma, is a prolific New York collector who, in 2019, established the Hill Art Foundation , which has an exhibition space in the Chelsea neighborhood. His varied specialties include Renaissance and Baroque bronzes, as well as modern and contemporary works.

Hill is making his own addition to the busy May mix. Beginning May 3, the Hill Art Foundation will feature a solo presentation by the artist Mika Tajima, known for her paintings, sculptures and installations that incorporate data and science.

Having one’s own public exhibition space affords a lot of latitude, but nonetheless Hill times his spring exhibition to sync up with the fairs and auctions — the gravitational power of the schedule is strong.

“We want traffic from collectors who may be traveling from out of town,” said Hill, who also serves on the board of directors of Gagosian gallery and on the advisory board of Christie’s. “We want people to see the show.”

In Hill’s opinion, collectors have become more sophisticated. “The market has gotten really good at discerning what’s a 10 and what’s an 8,” he said.

Although such fine distinctions may be the realm of top collectors, Hill added that he thought that art fairs also serve an educational role in New York, where large numbers of casual visitors have a chance to stroll the aisles. “You get a greater incidence of first-time fair goers,” Hill said, compared with events in other places, like, say, the small Dutch city of Maastricht, which draws loyal TEFAF devotees.

The abundance of options is illustrated by the fact that Frieze takes place at the Shed in Hudson Yards, just a few blocks from the gallery-packed blocks of Chelsea.

Instead of being superfluous, Frieze organizers say the location is synergistic.

“People come to the fair and then they look for the next activity they’re doing,” said Christine Messineo, director of Americas. “The conversation starts and then it leads them to a gallery an hour later. You can’t recreate that anywhere but in New York City.”

Frieze is now owned by the sports and entertainment conglomerate Endeavor, which last year bought the Armory Show , a fair that takes place in New York in September. The purchase was proof that organizers believe that collectors have an appetite for multiple events in the city throughout the year.

Kristell Chadé , the executive director of fairs at Frieze, said that there was a “relatively limited overlap between the two fairs — less than 10 galleries.”

Moreover, Chadé said that Frieze and the Armory Show were complementary, given that “the price points are more varied” at the Armory Show, which last year had 225 dealers, while Frieze had 68.

Messineo noted that “Frieze New York is an international fair welcoming global visitors,” and that this year, there will also be dealers from Guatemala, the Philippines, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa participating in the event.

Some visiting collectors will also attend the auctions, or the auction previews, which are free and open to the public.

“Increasingly, we think people are designing their calendar around these events,” said Brooke Lampley, head of global fine art for Sotheby’s, speaking of both fairs and auctions.

Lampley said that Sotheby’s wanted to “capitalize on and align with” other events as much as possible.

“Friends of mine who want to start collecting art, I always tell them to go to an art fair,” she said. “They get to see so much at once. It’s a great way to start orienting your eye and your taste.”

New York’s hugely dense and varied museum scene — which this season features, among other big shows, a new edition of the Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art — is a major attraction for collectors, and the auction houses see a market opportunity.

“Trust me, my sales team is actively canvassing owners of works by artists in the Biennial,” Lampley said, of stocking her sales with artists who are in the public eye. “It’s a message of validation and recognition, and the meeting point of the curatorial and commercial.”

You probably will not see Joyner raising a paddle — she watches the auctions online and then bids on the phone. “I never attend auctions in person,” she said. “I don’t want to broadcast what my parameters are.”

But she goes to the previews and attends the larger art fairs, as does Hill. “People sometimes buy a work without seeing it in person, and to me, that’s nuts,” Hill said.

That interest in being in the same room with art is what keeps the gallery scene humming along, playing its part in the larger ecosystem — and not all of it is at Zwirner’s high-flying level. The dealers who eventually end up at Frieze New York have to start somewhere. (Fairs are expensive for galleries, and organizers are choosy about who they include.)

David Pagliarulo, 28, started the gallery David Peter Francis in March with a group show, in a third-floor space in Chinatown. “The show was about beginning, what it means to jump off the cliff,” Pagliarulo said of the opening exhibition, which featured works by Peter Hujar, Matt Keegan and Kathryn Kerr.

Pagliarulo formerly worked at other galleries, including Marinaro, before opening his own, and the solo show in his new gallery, opening Friday, features work by the photographer Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez, including the image “Kyle/David” (2024).

Perhaps Hill and Joyner will not make it down to Chinatown, but, based on the gallery’s jam-packed opening night in March and the number of motivated collectors on hand in the city in May, someone likely will.

As Pagliarulo put it, “The density here is to everyone’s advantage.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the art fair taking place from May 10-14. It is the European Fine Art Foundation fair, not the European Fine Art Fair.

Good game but some bad design flaws.

I enjoy the game very addictive , good puzzles. But when you load up the game it shows you the puzzle you are up to, the wheel of letters. Just as you start to see the words Jump out at you all these ridiculous things flash up about tournaments and coins you earned etc , and you can’t close these down you have to go claim them all and see what they are showing you; and in the mean time you forget all the words you already deciphered in the puzzle it’s super frustrating. I just want to solve the puzzle not all this other stuff in the way distracting me ! Please at least put an x so you can close these messages away if you don’t want them. I would happily give five stars if they would fix this. One more small annoyance is that even when signed into game centre If I move to my other device it hasn’t synchronised and I end up doing all the puzzles twice.
Really enjoy playing this game. Can be challenging at times, however, enjoy the challenge and I just wait until I've earnt enough credit for a hint, rather than spend money. It may mean that I have to wait for a little while but that is fine, I do get there. Unlike other games, that make it impossible and impassable to get to any level without spending a lot of money, this game is a refreshing and extremely pleasant change to not be one of those. Thank you very much for such and enjoyable game.
I have been playing this game for a long time now. I am determined to go as far as I can without buying any coins. The minute I have to buy coins to go further, I will be uninstalling the app, which is common practice for me. I’m almost up to level 1000 and the percentage of players at this point is at 0.054. It would be good to get better rewards for higher levels. BUT it is SOOO slow. I’m playing it offline, so I’m not getting any ads. But the minute I take time to look for a word it goes to sleep! I then have to tap tap tap to wake it up again- it doesn’t go black on me like others are saying, but it might as well. I am at this moment trying to get the update. Nothing is happening. I find it’s not terribly hard, you only need a good vocabulary to get through, but there are real words that it won’t even put into the bonus words which is a bit frustrating. Apart from all that, as I said I the beginning, I’m determined to go as far as I can. I am enjoying the challenge.
