By far the best part of this trip. I'm a wild guy into action sports and this ride thrilled the hell out of me. amazing views. amazing staff. Having the DOORS OFF is sooooo much more fun and intimate than a regular helicopter. Our Pilot ADAM was fun, friendly, and an excellent tour guide as well telling us about the island as we flew not only over it - but THROUGH it - hovering above waterfalls just inside giant volcanic towering wells. BUY THIS TRIP - DONT HESITATE !!!

One of the best experiences in my whole life! Thrilling, exciting, breathtaking views and the crew + Steve our pilot/guide was so amazing!!

This flight is a must if you are travelling Kauai, you get to see the entire island in all its raw beauty. Our Pilot Nick was full of information and had great insights into the island, as a bonus he had a fantastic playlist to match the scenes we were passing. We were lucky enough to even spot Whales on our flight which made this a perfect day!

How to choose a helicopter tour in Kaua‘i

Waipo'o Falls is a fantastic waterfall on Kokee Stream dropping 800 ft. in two tiers. It is located in the heart of the Waimea Canyon.

Seeing Kauaʻi from the air is a thrilling and singular experience that may just define your trip to the Garden Island.

While expensive, it’s the only way to see much of the island, the majority of which is privately owned. Helicopter tours are by far the most popular option: while planes can fly no lower than 1000–1500ft, helicopters are allowed to fly as low as 500ft and can hover, too. The tours are popular with honeymooners – and with everyone who loves the romance of nature.

Here’s our guide to the best plane tours and helicopter tours in Kauaʻi.

How much is a helicopter tour?

The most popular way to see Kauaʻi from the air is to take a helicopter ride. Most helicopter tour companies depart from the airport in Lihuʻe ; trips generally last 60 to 90 minutes, and start at around $229. Tip: make reservations online ahead of time to save a bit of money.

The rugged coast of Kauai as seen from a helicopter above

How to choose a helicopter tour

It’s worth doing some careful research before choosing an operator. You’ll have to decide what kind of aircraft and tour you want (some land in neat places), and whether you want the doors on or off (some passengers like the visibility, others don’t like the exposure to wind and possibly rain).

Doors-off helicopters are the way to go if you are an avid photographer (and don't suffer from vertigo). But expect conditions that are noisy and windy – and maybe just a little bit scary. Keep in mind that on a six-seater helicopter, two people may be stuck in the middle. While you can request a window seat, it’s the captain has discretion to move people around for weight balance.

You also get to choose from big-window, little-window and bubble helicopters (the last like the ones seen on M*A*S*H ). The big differences will always be visibility and noise. More-modern helicopters are quieter and generally have big windows. You always wear headphones so you can talk with fellow passengers with a lower din, but even a slight reduction in sound can make your trip more pleasant. Then again, some of the older, louder helicopters have a sweet, retro,  Magnum P.I. –esque vibe that makes for a thrilling ride.

Make sure to check your operator’s weather policy before booking. Rain delays do happen, and tour routes will vary depending on rain and winds. Cancellations or postponements by operators may happen on short notice. Consider booking early during your stay, so you can reschedule for later if need be.

To check any tour company’s comprehensive safety record, consult the National Transportation Safety Board accident database .

Safety and apparel recommendations

Ideally, strap everything down (hats, phones, cameras, etc.). It can get a little cold, so bring a jacket and long pants, plus decent shoes in case your tour includes a landing.

Always approach a helicopter from the front (never the back). The captain will generally indicate which side you should board. Put your head down, and hold onto your hat, just like they do in the movies – then relax and look outward as you listen to ongoing narration from the knowledgeable pilots. You can feel free to tip them afterward, but it’s not required.

Where do helicopter tours go?

From Lihuʻe, expect to see the Nawiliwili Harbor and the Menehune Fishpond, Kipu Kai and the Tunnel of Trees, Manawaiopuna Falls in Hanapepe Valley, Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast , North Shore beaches like Keʻe and Hanalei , and Mt Waiʻaleʻale. While the rips up impossibly steep canyons are an adrenaline junkie’s dream, it’s really the close proximity to waterfalls – many of which can only be seen from the air – that makes these trips amazing.

The tours generally follow pretty standardized routes, but you can talk with your pilot to customize your tour experience, especially if it’s just you and your family or sweetheart taking the flight. This means getting closer to (or further away from) the ground, making more acrobatic banking turns or going with a more easy-breezy approach – however way you wish to fly.

For a really unique trip, consider a tour with Niʻihau Helicopters ($465 per person), which flies over much of Niʻihau island (avoiding the population center of Puʻuwai), then ends with snorkeling off one of the island’s beaches. Lunch, snacks and drinks are included (with a five-person minimum required).

Best helicopter operators in Kaua‘i

  • Island Helicopters offers a landing on top of Manawaiopuna Falls, more commonly known as Jurassic Falls.
  • Mauna Loa Helicopters is noteworthy for the chance to fly with no doors...freaky but fun.
  • Jack Harter Helicopters lets you take a flight with one of the pioneers of flight tourism on the island.
  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopters flies high-end choppers that are said to be less noisy.
  • Safari Helicopters offers an ecotour with a 40-minute stop at a wildlife refuge.

A woman laughs as she flies in a biplane over Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i

Fixed-wing scenic flights

When you can take a helicopter right to the cone of Mt Waiʻaleʻale and hover there to your heart’s content, there seems to be little point in choosing a fixed-wing aircraft to tour Kauaʻi. There is one exception, however: a tour in an open-cockpit biplane, which flies so slowly it may as well be hovering.

The combination of the romance of early aviation, the sensation of the wind and roaring engine, and the emerald tropical island sliding below – not to mention sitting so close to your cabin-mate you may as well be in an embrace – makes this many a honeymooner’s first choice.

In fact, if it were up to passengers, biplanes would probably be as popular as helicopters on Kauaʻi, but there’s currently only one company that offers these scenic flights: AirVentures Hawaii , based in Lihuʻe. The tour leaves from Lihuʻe Airport and takes you north past the Wailua River and Kilauea Lighthouse . From there, you travel up the lush Hanalei Valley, continuing over the ridge to see cascading waterfalls and 4000ft cliffs. The flight then continues north past Hanalei to the Na Pali Coast, soaring past waterfalls and canyon drops through Waimea Canyon, and back to the South Shore, where you might just spot your hotel. The company even lets you keep the cool throwback hat and goggles as a souvenir of your only-in-Kauaʻi adventure.

Sightseeing Tours of Paradise

The Best Helicopter Tours:

Our list of the top helicopter tours in kauai.

Of all the Hawaiian islands, Kauai demands a helicopter more than any other. From the vast Waimea Canyon (the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’) to the Na Pali coast, the terrain is not easy to reach from the ground.

If you haven’t taken a helicopter tours in a number of years, then you may be surprised at how comfortable and quiet the experience can be. As opposed to a flight , newer helicopters have quieter blades and executive seats  with a lot more room than older seats. You can also see so much more than you used to, thanks to more expansive glass-areas that enable you to take in the view all around you.

There’s also a number of factors you need to consider when you book your trip. Do you want to do a morning tour? What about an afternoon tour? And how long do you want to be up there? Tours range from 35 minutes to over 2 hours.

Do you want to take off from Princeville? Lihue? Different companies take off from different locations as well. We did the research to find out all these offerings from the major helicopter tour companies currently operating out of Kauai.

Are You Not in Kauai?

What if you’re not staying in Kauai? If you’re staying on Oahu (Honolulu) and want to do a helicopter tour, there are packages available that will fly you over and back in time to get back to your hotel!

Oh, and just because we are recommending these companies, it doesn’t mean that we want you to give them all your money. Please use as many promo codes and coupon offers that you can so that they make as little profit as possible. For example we found a valid hotel promo code for one of the nicest properties on Kauai. Perhaps Travelodge  is more your style, don’t worry you can always get a deal with them as well.

1. Blue Hawaiian Tours

Blue Hawaiian offers both eco-tours and private charters for custom experiences. Their chopper is the new Airbus Eco-Star, which has a 50% reduction in noise. You can also talk to the pilots, who are certified Hawaii tour guides.

What You’ll See:

The helicopter leaves from Lihue, and takes you to Hanapepe Valley. Then, they take you over Mana Waiapuna, which most people refer to as ‘Jurassic Park Falls’ (they were in the first movie!). Then you’ll be taken to two canyons (this island has such diverse terrain): Olokele Canyon, and then Waimea Canyon. Waimea canyon is famous for its red dirt, which you can appreciate from high up and not have permanently-stained socks and shoes from walking in it.

Then the tour will take you along the Na Pali Coast, with slopes that pour rain water into the ocean and create a distinct turquoise color. See if you can spot the large sea turtles in the water and the monk seals on the beaches here. The treacherous landscape means that very few people can reach this area.

Then they’ll wrap up the island tour by taking you to see Hanalei Bay and the Princeville resort area. To finish off the grand tour, weather permitting that is, they’ll take you to  Mt. Waialeale , which is known as the wettest place on Earth! The helicopter will fly into the center of the crater, with 5000 foot walls surrounding you. There’s also 3000 foot waterfalls surrounding you when you’re down there!

The whole tour is approximately 50 minutes. The cost of the tour includes taxes and fees, but the tour operators will make a video of the tour and put it on a DVD that you can purchase at an additional cost.

Quick Notes About The Tour:

  • Online pricing discount is available if you book online 5 days in advance or more. If you want to book a tour for sooner than that, you need to call their Kauai offices here:  (800) 745-2583
  • Children under 24 months can come along for free.
  • FAA regulations require Individuals who weigh over 250 pounds to purchase an additional seat. One will be offered for a 50% discount. All passengers will be weighted prior to takeoff (as part of FAA regulations).
  • No scuba diving for 24 hours before your tour’s scheduled takeoff.
  • When you book, you can opt for either a morning or afternoon tour. Once you select your preferred date and time of tour, you’ll be contacted by Blue Hawaiian with all the details you’ll need.

2. A-Star Helicopter Tours From Jack Harter Helicopters

A-Star has two advantages over Blue Hawaiian: you can choose either a 60-minute or a 90-minute tour, the latter of which makes it the longest helicopter tour available. The second is really cool: they’ve been permitted by the FAA to fly at the lowest altitudes available in Kauai. That means you’re going to get real close and personal with your surroundings!

Why did we rank it second then? Don’t get us wrong: these are both amazing experiences with amazing tour guides and breathtaking scenery. We ranked it 2nd place because the helicopter is the  Hughes 500s , which are a little louder than the Airbus Eco-Star. A-Star flies with the doors off, however, so you’re going to get even closer to the scenery!

The locations that you visit on this tour are also more numerous due to the longer trip. On the 90 minute trip you’ll also visit Nawiliwili Harbor, Tunnel of Trees, Kipu Kai, and theMenehune Fishpond. You’ll also spend a little more time at each location, so you can get the perfect picture.

  • Jack Harter (and all helicopter tours) have the same weight restrictions, which are due to FAA regulations. Everyone will be weighed when they arrive for the tour.
  • They have a standard 24-hour cancellation policy.

3. Safari Helicopters Tours (with Touchdown in Kauai Refuge!)

Safari Helicopters has one great advantage over the other two tours: they include a mid-tour landing! When you go on their 90 minute tour, they will land in the Kauai Wildlife Refuge. This overlooks the Olokele Canyon, so you’ll have some amazing pictures to take home with you. This area has no roads, and is off-limits to the public. Safari Helicopters is the only company permitted to land there.

After touching down in the Refuge, you’ll be able to explore the area for approximately 40 minutes. The Refuge belongs to the Robinson family, and on rare occasions, he might stop by to talk with you about preservation of the natural beauty of the islands.

If you don’t want to touchdown, there is the Deluxe Waterfall Safari, which is the exact same tour, but they skip the landing. It lasts approximately 60 minutes, and costs quite a bit less (their pricing changes quite a bit, so we don’t want to be inaccurate by posting their prices).

Safari Helicopters takes off from Lihue as well. Tours leave at 4:30PM.

Drinks provided on the tour.

They have the same weight limits. Although you’ll need to purchase a second seat at full price (as opposed to 50% off like Blue Hawaiian).

A Kauai Day-Tour out of Oahu:

If you’re staying in Honolulu, you can still get an amazing helicopter tour of Kauai and be home in time for dinner! Here’s how it works: the tour will pick you up from your Waikiki hotel at 5:00am, where you’ll take a short flight to Kauai. Then, you’ll go on a land tour where you’ll see Opaeka’a Falls,Kalalea Mountain, Kealia Scenic Viewpoint, Princeville and Kapa’a.

For lunch you’ll dine at the famous Tahiti Nui restaurant, and then its off to Hanalei.

At 3:30pm you’ll begin your 50-55 minute helicopter tour, where you’ll visit the greatest spots on Kauai: Na pali coast, Waimean canyon, all the same sites you’d see in the top 3 tours listed above.

Right after the helicopter lands, you’ll be taken back to the airport for a flight back to Oahu, where you’ll arrive back to your Waikiki hotel around approximately 7-7:30pm. What a day that’ll be!

Aloha, and Mahalo once again.

June 2023 Fun and easy. We called in a reservation a few weeks before and were able to iron one down over the phone thankfully. We had paid a little more to sit in the front for the tour but it definitely didn't disappoint. We stuck with doors on for the trip just to keep things temperate for us. Steve was a gentleman and a character throughout the whole tour. The weather was perfect for it. Steve regaled us with stories from the area, talking to each of the passengers. We were able to see a double rainbow as well which was nice and catch different parts of the island that would've been hard to drive to with our limited time there. A beautiful experience.

Booked a helicopter tour with a different company well in advance for my family and the night before they called and canceled it. I called Air Kauai immediately and even though it was after 5:30pm an amazing employee there got my information and made the helicopter ride happen the next morning! The weather was perfect (it was an 11am doors off tour), the tour was even better than expected. The pilot even pointed out some whales! It was our son in law's first time to Kauai and it was the perfect way for him to get an overview of the beautiful island including Waimea canyon, Napali Coast, the famous row of trees and the waterfalls. Will use Air Kauai from now on any time we visit Kauai! Highly recommend Air Kauai especially if it's your first time to the island or if you have a guest who is a first time visitor!

Air Kauai Helicopter Tours was the highlight of our trip to Kauai. Our pilot, Adam was very knowledgeable and experienced, as he took us on a breathtaking tour of the island. He also had some cool music on his iPhone. As we flew thru the Napali Coast, and Waimea Canyons, he played the Jurassic park theme songs. Adam was also very funny and engaging, and he made the tour even more enjoyable. We would highly recommend Air Kauai Helicopter Tours to anyone visiting Kauai. It is an unforgettable experience that you will cherish forever. Here are some of the things we loved about Air Kauai Helicopter Tours: The pilots are experienced and knowledgeable. The helicopters are in excellent condition. The tours are customized to your interests. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are pricey but reasonable. If you are looking for an unforgettable experience on Kauai, I highly recommend Air Kauai Helicopter Tours.

More of a 3.7 star review. Over the phone they were detailed and very helpful. I did have quite a bit of questions and on the front end they were super friendly. Best time to fly, according to some research is generally, earlier in the morning. You'd want to be careful to check winds mph and weather quite often, because Kauai gets a ton of rain and flying you'll also get cross winds that can be quite powerful. We were super nervous because there are helicopter crashes in Kauai almost every 1-2 years, usually because of weird times of sudden low visibility and the cross winds, however there is a ton tech to prepare and the pilots are very familiar with the route. There were 5 of us in the back, 4 adults and one baby, and 2 others with the pilot in the front. I was amazed at how quick take off was. I'd suggest, especially if your on the afternoon flights -Do Not Eat or drink 2 hours before. Two people felt nauseous 25 min into it. The 3.7 star review is reflective of what happened when we were there. The video and photo can be purchased for an extra fee, however the quality is terrible. Moisture gets in the lense, etc, which is understandable over time, however if your running this business with a handful of helicopters-you'd know which lenses need to be replaced. Especially if your bragging about the TLC these aircrafts get and if your a pilot for any time you'd know which lenses suck. Unfortunately, they get super salesy for a $70 video, they pull you aside and try to skip around AVOIDING times it switches to the bad cameras... That was like so awkward...like everyone saw how bad the quality dipped and they just smiled like their offering 4k.... And instead of apologizing and comfortable writing out a discount they were just cheap and salesy... Overall, when you're spending $1200 for your party, $70 isn't a big deal, so why get shady and salesy now? Just apologize for the bad quality (approximately 50% of the video) and work something out if your client still is open for it .. But don't sell it like it's 4k or 1080p as promised and definitely don't bait and switch by trying to skip the bad parts. Experience was tarnished by these cheap tactics and simply, if your making 1600 gross easy 45min ride just replace the lenses each time they collect moisture -your customers deserve quality.

My family and I are speechless! From the check-in, ambiance, customer service and Adam-our pilot-the tour was worth-it Thank you for the best experience !

Our pilot Steve made this experience so worth it! For the price you get a doors off helicopter tour of pretty much the entire island! Neither my boyfriend or I have been on a helicopter before and Steve made us feel super safe and relaxed. The entire process from booking to the tour was smooth and all staff was friendly! We felt very safe and the tour itself was AMAZING!! Words cannot describe the beauty we experienced from this helicopter tour. If you are visiting Kauai this is a MUST

Ma-gi-cal if i had one word to describe my experience. The crew at Air Kaui is top notch from the moment we got there. Jenelle is amazing and Adam was phenomenal. I love good customer service and they went above and beyond. They all called us by our first names and made the experience memorable for me and my daughter. Adam's playlist rocks, i had to steal his Creedence Clearwater Revival track. Please tip your pilots!

Had the absolute best ride with Air Kauai- Adam was our pilot! We rode in the doors off helicopter and he guided us along the way with an awesome playlist and all. Everyone we encountered from this company was amazing! Front office staff, golf cart transport and everyone helping us getting ready for this beautiful ride was super friendly and nice! Highly recommend.

Doors off helicopter tours.

  • Doors off helicopter tours of Kauai are the most exciting aerial flight you can take. The open-air experience will leave you breathless and in possession of some absolutely epic photos if you are keen to get some good shots. We can usually guarantee you a window or front seat as most of our doors off flights take fewer people.

6- Passenger Charters

  • These helicopters feature a setup of two passengers up front (next to the pilot) and four seats in the back. They are flown with the doors on and are far and away the most popular helicopter tour available in Kauai. You'll find pricing to be a little cheaper and in most cases, it is possible for us to get you those two spots up front.

We do airplanes too! Explore a fantastic low-cost way of seeing Kauai from the air. The route taken is similar to that of a helicopter tour. The difference is perspective. Airplanes provide a broader, more landscape viewing experience that is quiet breathtaking. A helicopter can get much closer but the view an airplane provides of Kauai is also stunning. Airplane flights are also a lot cheaper.

An island sculpted by nature

Aerial tours of Kauai’s most astonishing natural wonders

Kauai is a natural masterpiece. For over six million years, the powers of nature have been sculpting and reshaping Kauai, creating some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Appropriately named the “Garden Isle,” the island of Kauai is draped in lush green valleys, towering sea cliffs, thick jungle vegetation, winding rivers and gorgeous cascading waterfalls.

Without a road encircling the island, many of Kauai’s most stunning sights are inaccessible by land. Among these remote scenic attractions is the famous Na Pali coast, spanning 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore and boasting 3000 ft. sea cliffs and valleys. Then to the Southwest is the Waimea Canyon, coined the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” With so much to explore, a Kauai helicopter tour is truly the only way to experience all of Kauai’s most epic scenery.

The 6 Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Admire the Garden Island's waterfalls, canyons and peaks from the air.

Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Courtesy of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

The Hawaiian island of Kauai features lush green mountains, dramatic coastal landscapes, crystal-clear ocean waters and unbelievable scenery everywhere you look. However, it's hard to take it all in from a car or even a boat – there's just too much to see, and much of the island isn't accessible on land. That's why Kauai helicopter tours are so popular, because they let visitors see all the island's attractions from the air, making it easy to scale the highest cliffs and enjoy a bird's-eye view of Kauai's many valleys. Using both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News tracked down the best Kauai helicopter tours. Don't leave the island without experiencing one of these unforgettable flights.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours – Kauai Eco Adventure

Price: From $389 Duration: 50 minutes

Blue Hawaiian's Kauai Eco Adventure affords travelers the chance to see the beauty of Kauai from an otherworldly perspective. Narrated by the pilot, who's also a certified guide, the flight takes you to Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as "Jurassic Park" falls, Olokele Canyon, through the beautiful Waimea Canyon, and along Kauai's north shore, which features the stunning sea cliffs of the Napali Coast. Depending on the weather, you may also be able to view Mount Waialeale, a dormant volcano known as one of the "wettest places on Earth," that receives around 450 inches of rain each year. Reviewers report that the tour is excellent, fun and a must-do in Kauai. They also praise the pilot's commentary.

Flights are available daily starting at 8 a.m. Blue Hawaiian also operates private charters on Kauai.

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $359 Duration: 1 hour

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours offers private tours of the Garden Island with up to four passengers on each flight. The Kauai Experience tour takes you to see the beauty and wonder of the Napali Coast, the splendor of Waimea Canyon, and if the weather permits, Mount Waialeale. Travelers say the views are fantastic and appreciate the small size of the helicopter, which allows everyone to enjoy a window seat. Visitors who chose to fly with the doors off of the helicopter call the excursion a little nerve-racking at first, but exhilarating.

Children are welcome on the tour, but must be at least 7 years old to fly with the doors on and at least 12 to fly with the doors off. Flights are available daily beginning at 8 a.m. The company also offers a specialized photography tour during which travelers dictate the flight path so they can cater it to their interests.

Safari Helicopters – Deluxe Waterfall Safari

Price: From $309 Duration: 1 hour

Travelers call this tour the highlight of their Kauai vacation thanks to the friendly, skilled pilots and the awe-inspiring views. The flight covers more than 100 miles, featuring lush mountains, dramatic gorges and canyons, waterfalls, and more. Expect to see the unmatched beauty of the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon and many of the most famous natural wonders on the island.

Flights are offered daily beginning at 8:25 a.m. The company also offers a Canyon Landing Safari, which includes a 30-minute stop at the Kauai Wildlife Refuge.

Ali'i Air Tours & Charters – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $350 Duration: 1 hour

Ali'i promises no middle seats on its Kauai tour, so each passenger will have exceptional views of Waipo'o falls, Hanapepe Valley, Hanalei Bay and more. Plus, each of its tours are private, so you won't need to share the small helicopter cabin with strangers. Travelers are wowed by the scenery and praise the experienced pilots; a few reviewers were repeat passengers. Some recommended opting for the doors-off option for an extra thrill.

Tours depart several times daily throughout the morning and afternoon. Ali'i also runs an airplane tour of Kauai, as well as a Pearl Harbor airplane tour, which departs from Kauai and spends the day at the Oahu memorial.

Air Ventures Hawaii – Big Kahuna Kauai Air Tour

Price: From $169 Duration: 1 hour

Eco-conscious tourists may want to consider this tour from Air Ventures Hawaii. According to the company, its GippsAero GA8 Airvan uses less fuel than a typical helicopter. Plus, there are no middle seats, so everyone enjoys a thrilling view from the extra-large bubble windows. What's more, the aircraft flies at a slower speed than a helicopter, allowing more time to take in the views. The flight soars past waterfalls, the Kilauea Lighthouse, Lumahai Beach and Waimea Canyon, among other sites. The sights earn rave reviews, and many travelers offer equivalent praise for the pilots.

Flights depart daily in both the morning and afternoon. Air Ventures Hawaii also operates private tours.

Airborne Aviation – Hughes 500 Doors-Off Helicopter

Price: From $319 Duration: 50 minutes

If you're up for an adventure, or just want to capture some spectacular photos, consider this doors-off tour from Airborne Aviation. Flights are limited to four passengers, meaning everyone enjoys a window seat. Without the barrier of windows or doors, you'll be able to snap incredible images of Kauai’s shoreline, waterfalls and canyons. Flyers rave about the views and the skilled, professional pilots. Reviewers do warn, however, that without doors or windows, the ride is quite windy.

Flights are offered daily starting as early as 8:15 a.m. Private tours are also an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees for Kauai helicopter tours start at $309 per person. However, prices will vary by company, tour length and inclusions.

Tipping is not required, but if you'd like to provide a monetary gesture of gratitude to your pilot/guide, plan to tip between $15 and $20 per person.

  • LF2020 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Doors Off IS THE WAY TO FLY! 🚁 💕 WE LOVED THIS!!!! Our pilot Preston gave us so much information about what we were seeing and about the island. Having the doors off was NOT AT ALL scary. Preston’s excellent flying and maneuvering skills made the flight wonderful! The guy at the desk was a bit of an abrupt person (maybe he doesn’t like his job? He seemed annoyed to have to tell us what we needed to do, but isn’t that his job?), maybe he was having a bad day 🤷🏻‍♀️ Read more Written April 25, 2024

  • gregeI6010UT 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best cancelled trip I ever had ! My family and I had planned a day on Kaua’i just to try and see some of the beautiful sights during our busy trip. We decided that a doors off helicopter tour would be a great way to see everything in a unique way. After reading multiple reviews of other companies, we decided to book with Jack Harters. The day arrived and we landed on Kaua’i to a rainy and cloudy day. We went to the office to check in and the staff was courteous and professional while getting our information and telling us the rules of the trip. After about 10 minutes of waiting we were approached by one of the office staff telling us that due to the weather, the pilot was cancelling the trip because we wouldn’t be able to see anything. She attempted to reschedule us but we couldn’t make any of the times work and decided to just get the refund and try for the next time we go to Kauai. While we were disappointed, we also under stand that we have no control over the weather. I am writing all this because even though we didn’t get the helicopter tour, we would still recommend this company. They could have taken us up and just said “there’s nothing we can do about the weather” and gotten the money grab. But they didn’t. They wanted us to have a good experience and didn’t want us to feel like we got ripped off. We felt like we were treated properly and professionally. We will be back on Kaua’i some day and will absolutely book a tour with Jack Harters and have already recommended them to friends who have future travel plans to Kaua’i. As a side note; as we were driving around the island the rest of the day, we saw one of the other helicopter tour companies loading passengers into their shuttle vans to bring the tourists to the airport and show them the clouds. I feel sorry for them for not booking with Jack Harters….. Read more Written April 18, 2024
  • js_belliston 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t get stuck on the left without a voice This was the main tour my hubby looked forward to in KAUAI and he talked to them beforehand and asked that we both either be in the front seat or on different rows but on the right hand side. They seemed fine with that request. Once they loaded us I had the right side front and he got the left side back. Nick, the pilot, catered entirely to those on the right and so my poor hubby never got a good view of the Denali coast or waterfalls. Because we were never instructed on how to use our headsets to speak to the pilot, our voices were never heard by Nick when we were trying to request a fly by from the left once in a while. My husband left the tour very disappointed as he mostly saw the ocean . I feel so sad for him, especially after it wasn't a cheap tour. Read more Written April 17, 2024
  • scottmP1986GG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A flight over paradise The pilot, Preston cancelled our morning flight due to low cloud cover. He wanted us to be able to see all the beauty of Kauai. We were so thankful to be able to go that afternoon. I would much rather delay than get shortchanged. This company cares and wants everyone to have the best possible experience. The doors off was the absolute best! I've been in many helecopters and Preston is one impressive pilot. dodging in and out of canyons, flying over waterfalls, and beaches, Preston would call out where we were and provide great information. This is a first rate company that I would highly recommend. Read more Written April 15, 2024

I was in the middle seat and not able to get many photos but my husband was on the outside and able to video and take photos. Unfortunately, we were not able to understand the narration of the pilot due to his accent. I think he pointed out the sights we were seeing but neither of us understood what he said. • reneef586 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Must Do! Amazing! A helicopter tour of Kauai was a "must do" for me when planning our trip. So much of the island is inaccessible by any other means. The views are spectacular and the open-door experience was unbelievable. I chose Jack Harter based on other reviews and the reputation and we couldn't have been happier. Eli was our pilot. He was very knowledgable about the island and made sure that each side of the helicopter was able to get amazing views of the "highlight" features. We planned this experience early in our stay to maximize the chance of rescheduling in case of weather-related cancellations. We were also a group of 4 so we did not have to be concerned about the company's requirement of having 4 passengers before the flight is confirmed. Read more Written April 7, 2024
  • guy941 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour of Kauai Arthur took great care of us for our tour around Kauai. Some of the highlights for me were seeing Manawaiopuna Falls, Waimea Canyon (especially after seeing it from land the day before) and Napali Coast. However, my favorite spot was crater of Mt. Waialeale. The number of waterfalls is crazy. The entire crew took great care of us from checking, to the safety briefing, to getting use situated on the helicopter. The doors off tour is a unique experience. When they tell you to be prepared for cooler temperatures listen to them. The wind is pretty intense too. I would go again, but next time I'd maybe pick doors on. If you are an avid photographer though the experience of not needing to worry about the glass makes this tour a great choice. We did the doors off Kauai helicopter tour. We have previously done a helicopter ride with a different company on Kauai and Jack Harter is definitely above the rest in terms of customer service and friendliness. We had Stephanie as our pilot and she was great. We felt very safe the entire time and she made sure to point out many spots to look out for as we passed over them. Yes it is pricey but this is some of the best money to be spent on Kauai and one of the few ways that you can see the entire island.

This was our first helicopter experience and we did the doors off tour. It was hands down the most beautiful experience ever. It was a bit cloudy/rainy but we got to see some amazing rainbows and great waterfalls. Our pilot was Preston, he was super friendly and made us feel very safe and comfortable. He was very knowledgeable about the island and answered all of our questions. I highly recommend this!

AMAZING experience - even as someone who is afraid of heights, the doors-off helicopter ride was a major highlight of our trip! Worth every penny. Such a unique and up-close way to see the island. We had to reschedule our original flight due to bad weather -- which we really appreciated their commitment to safety and also to making sure we got to see everything! -- and the day we rescheduled for was PERFECT weather and visibility. So I recommend taking their advice to book the flight for early in your trip so you have time to reschedule if needed!

These guys are pros and deliver an extraordinary experience. Check in was organized and gracious. All the staff are friendly and informative. Safety procedures will make you confident in the journey. Our pilot, Preston, was great at narrating the scenery as well as warning us of any upcoming turbulence. The entire flight was smooth with little turbulence and jaw dropping views. Can't recommend highly enough!!

We rode with Eli doing the full island tour (1h). It was a doors on flight with 2 other guests though the helicopter seated 6 so we had lots of room and great views. Eli was an incredible guide, did a great job of entertaining us and giving us history of the island, as well as being very calming to one of the passengers who was quite nervous about flying. 10/10 experience. I am glad we chose to schedule early in our trip because we ended up having to reschedule to 2 days later. Well worth the wait. Also just as an aside, being that there was a mist/sprinkling on and off during our tour, as it often seem to be according to the staff, I’m really glad we chose doors on!

Even though a doors off helicopter ride could sound scary and overwhelming, we are so glad we chose this company. From start to finish, they made the whole experience so seamless. Most importantly we felt safe throughout the entire process!!! We loved our pilot Max and the safety instructors were fun and hilarious! This experience was 10/10 and we will definitely tell our family and friends!!! Thanks for making this such a beautiful memory for us.

From the staff answering the phones, inside the office, the shuttle lady to the pilot this place was hands down the most professional well staffed helicopter tour I have EVER been on. Our pilot was very safe, knowledgeable and personable with us. We had an excellent time with the doors off tour and highly recommended it. I will be back with my kids next year. Thank you!

View Bali Hai, also known as the Makana Mountain, which starts at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, one of the Garden Isle’s most famous waterfalls . Best known from the opening of the 1993 blockbuster film, Jurassic Park. Watch from above as the water rushes over a 380-foot tall cliff surrounded by walls of deep green lush flora. Located within Hanapēpē Valley on the west side of the island, it is a site few can say they have seen while on Kauai.

Continue on over to Hanalei Bay which covers nearly two miles of beach and is backed by 4000ft tall emerald mountains: Hihimanu is on the east, Namolokama is in the middle with its square top, and the triangular shaped Mamalahoa is to the west. Often cloaked with a mist of clouds the Mt. Waialeale ridge home to dozens of cascading waterfalls.

The name Waialeale, meaning “rippling water or overflowing” receives over 400 inches of rain per year and is known to be one of the wettest spots on earth. You’re surrounded by enchanting waterfalls and lush green walls of fauna. Waialeale Crater aka Blue Hole & The Weeping Wall. From above you will see it all and find yourself lost in the beauty and mystery of Kauai’s enchanting lure.

Other sites like the Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon are also famous aerial sites on the Doors-Off Adventure Tour.

Short answer is “yes”. However, rest assured, prior to every flight our pilots and ground crew review the weather to make sure it is not only safe, but also conducive to a quality tour for you. We understand that this is a big expenditure, and we want to make sure you get your money’s worth. We will cancel your tour and make sure you get a full refund if there is poor visibility, or if the pilot determines the winds are unsafe.

We give a 100% refund for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour date. If there is inclement weather or unscheduled maintenance, we will either reschedule your tour or issue a 100% refund. Keep in mind that if the tour is booked with a third party, their cancellation and refund policy may differ from ours.

All guests must provide their own transportation. We recommend Taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We ask guests to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time due to unforeseen traffic, to arrive early or on time for their check in.

The doors-off helicopter tour is extremely windy. We recommend comfortable athletic wear, no loose shirts, or dresses, or skirts. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Hair should be secured in a bun or tightly braided, no loose ponytails or braids. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler and we recommend a windbreaker or a jacket to protect against the wind chill.

All of the tour times we offer are great times to view the island. Time is personal preference whether you like to be an early bird and do activities first thing in the morning, or take your time and do a later tour midday or afternoon.

You may reschedule or cancel your tour for a full refund if done 48 hours prior to the tour date and time. It should be noted that it does rain almost every day in Hawaii. Most of the time it is in very small areas at a time, which does not affect our tours. So we do not recommend cancelling or rescheduling based on a forecast of rain.

Front Seat upgrades are the two seats in the front with the pilot. Selecting these seats guarantees the seating assignment if the two passengers’ body weights combined do not exceed the 345 pounds weight limit. The front seats are sold only as a pair together, whether it is for one or two people. The open seating is any seat in the helicopter. Open class seating is assigned by body weights. For solo passengers, we try our best to accommodate a seat next to the open door. For couples, we seat you two together in the same row. For a party of three, we either seat two passengers in the front and the third passenger in the rear seat, or vice versa depending on the weights. For a party of four passengers, we will seat accordingly by each body weight, typically the two body weights that are the lightest combined at, or under, 345 pounds will be seated in the front. For any seating, you may add a request upon booking. We do not guarantee seating nor assign seating until the day of the tour. Premium Plus seatings are for any guests that weigh 240lbs/109kg or more. An additional seat is blocked and reserved to ensure the combined passenger weight does not exceed the aircraft limitation of 745lbs/339kg.

Because this is a doors-off helicopter tour operation we must take extra steps — in accordance with FAA regulations — to make sure nothing flies out of the helicopter in flight. A phone flying out the door could hurt someone on the ground, or even damage the helicopter if it hits the spinning rotors. Requiring a tether for your phone allows you to enjoy the tour without having to worry about it slipping out of your hands and being lost forever. If you do not have a phone tether, one will be available for your use.

The minimum age requirement is 10 years old. A responsible adult must be seated next to any child. No lap children are allowed, and each person is required to wear a seat belt.

808-651-0619 or use our Contact Form

Weight Restrictions: Front Seats are sold as a pair only, with a maximum combined weight limit of 340lbs/154kg. Guests weighing more than 240lbs./109kg and parties of two (2) with a combined weight of more than 400lbs./182kg, must reserve (1) one additional seat at the regular price. Private Tour 4 guest maximum weight limit is 745lbs/338kg.

Age Restrictions: Minimum age 10 years.

Is a Helicopter Ride in Kauai Worth It? Your Top Questions Answered

A re you thinking about booking a  kauai  helicopter tour but still have a lot of questions keep scrolling to find out whether or not it’s worth booking a helicopter ride in kauai..

Guest post by Dani of Diapers in Paradise

If you have ever considered splurging on a helicopter tour, you are not going to find a better place in the world to do it than  Kauai .

Kauai is known for the lush, verdant jungle that covers most of the island, but it is largely inaccessible to vehicles.

In fact, some of the most iconic landmarks of the Garden Island are only visible from the water… or the air.

There are many helicopter tour companies set up on the island, ready to show you around the side of Kauai that you will not be able to experience any other way.

If you are wondering whether a Kauai helicopter tour is a worthwhile part of your trip, read on to learn more and to hear about my experience with it.

What is it like to take a helicopter tour of Kauai?

Do you remember that iconic moment in the original  Jurassic Park  movie  when they are approaching the island in a helicopter, and the dramatic theme music plays as they fly along the prehistoric-looking coast?

That’s exactly what it feels like during helicopter tours of Kauai.

Because that is exactly what you are doing!

That scene from Jurassic Park was actually filmed on the approach to the Na Pali coast, on Kauai’s North Shore, which is one of the two main reasons to take Kauai helicopter tours.

Na Pali is only viewable  by boat  or by Kauai helicopter rides, and if you want the most epic view of the landscape, a helicopter is the way to go.

The other reason to take a helicopter tour? Waimea Canyon. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It is possible to see parts of Waimea Canyon by a combination of driving and hiking, but you will only get a hint of the wonder of this ten-mile-long canyon.

But flying through the canyon, past countless waterfalls, and seeing the jungle sprawled out below you – that is how you truly come to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of Waimea Canyon.

Taking a tour of Kauai by air is an experience that you will not forget.

What is the process for taking a Kauai helicopter tour?

First, you will want to book it ahead of time for your Kauai vacation.

Yes, there are plenty of tour operators that you can find around the cruise ship terminal in Lihue that are happy to take same-day bookings.

But you will really want to do your research ahead of time and choose a reputable operator.

We went with  Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours  for their vast experience and impeccable safety record and because they are one of the very best helicopter tours for private tours.

When you arrive, you’ll go through a safety briefing, and then you’ll head out to meet your pilot at the airfield.

They will get you all buckled up, go over any last-minute safety reminders, and then you’re off! The vertical take-off is thrilling and nerve-wracking, but within minutes you are out over the jungles of the island.

Most Mauna Loa helicopter tours are in the 45-60 minute range, although you can find longer ones.

While some of the sites that they visit may vary, you can bet that every tour is going to show you Waimea Canyon, the rugged Na Pali Coast, and  Manawaiopuna Falls .

There are even tours available that stop midway through for a picnic and photo op!

What are the types of Kauai helicopter tours available?

When you are looking to book a helicopter tour, you will have a few options. You’ll first need to choose if you want to share the helicopter with other people or book a private tour.

Shared tours usually have 6 passengers. And while this doesn’t seem like much, it is possible that you will have your view impaired by another passenger.

If you are hoping to get good photographs of this for your Kauai vacation, this is particularly worrisome.

Some of the best Kauai helicopter tours are better than others for visibility, so read about the particular helicopter for any flight you are considering booking.

You also might not get seated next to your travel partner. They balance the helicopter for weight, so you will not have any say in where you sit.

The next thing you’ll need to choose is whether or not you want doors on your helicopter.

Opting for a Kauai doors-off helicopter tour gives you the advantage of having a better view and not getting any glare on your photos. It’s windier and sometimes a bit wet!

But Kauai doors off helicopter tours give you an unparalleled view of the scenery and make you feel much closer to the landscape.

If having the doors off seems inherently scarier, remember – it is not the doors that are keeping you safe. It is your seat harness and the skills of your pilot.

It will be imperative that you do not have any loose items on you when you fly. Cameras will need to be strapped to your body.

We opted for the private, doors-off tour.

While this was a splurge for us, we figured it was probably the only time we would ever do a helicopter tour, and we wanted to do it the best way we could.

We have not regretted this decision once! The best Kauai helicopter tours are pricey either way. May as well make the most of it on this stunning Hawaiian island!

Can you bring kids on a Kauai helicopter tour?

Yes, although the age requirements will vary by the tour operator.

Some operators have a minimum age of around 7, while others will allow children of any age, including lap infants (under 2), for free. Lap infants will not have a seat belt, however.

If you are traveling with young children, you will really want to think about if they will be able to handle sitting buckled into an adult-sized harness for an hour, especially considering they might not even be able to see past other passengers.

You also might not get seated next to your child, depending on the weight distribution, although most operators will try to seat families together when possible.

When we visited, we were  traveling with a baby  and a toddler. We ended up using a  local babysitter agency  and turned it into a wonderfully memorable half-day date.

  Are Kauai helicopter tours safe?

This is undoubtedly a question that has crossed your mind if you are considering helicopter rides in Kauai.

And given a few high-profile helicopter crashes in the last few years – including one on Kauai – it is only natural to be nervous.

Of course, there is always risk in something like a helicopter flight. They are statistically more dangerous than a commercial airplane flight, although they are less dangerous than flying in a private plane.

Tour-operated helicopters are significantly safer than private helicopters, as well.

Helicopter flight has become much less risky over the past few decades, but there are occasional incidents.

Of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has seen the highest number of helicopter crashes, although they are still incredibly rare.

Ensure that you choose a reputable tour operator that adheres to the highest level of safety standards. Expect that if there is adverse weather, your tour will be canceled.

For this reason, it is a good idea to book your helicopter flight early in your trip so that you can reschedule if needed!

We never felt unsafe during our helicopter tour. The flight was smooth, and we were impressed with our pilot’s level of experience.

Is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the money?

Without a doubt, yes!

The breathtaking scenery of the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon are best viewed from the air, especially a bird’s eye view!

There is no better way to experience the natural wonder of the Garden Isle than by flying above the jungle in a Kauai island helicopter.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience that you will treasure, along with incredible photos, especially if you choose a doors-off tour.

If you are coming to Kauai, I highly recommend taking a few hours out to see the beauty that this island has to offer!
