In the iconic film Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn famously said that "Paris is always a good idea." But Travel + Leisure readers know that the same can be said for the rest of the country's 18 regions — particularly the south of France. So, it's perhaps unsurprising that three of the five top resorts in France are in le Midi . In fact, the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 hotels are all in Provence.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

While the No. 1 hotel is just north of Aix-en-Provence, offering an inland Provençal escape, Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc (No. 3) and Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, a Four Seasons Hotel (No. 4) are both along the Mediterranean coast. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, which was described by one reader as a "fairytale place," shimmied up from the No. 5 spot last year. "We never left the property during our stay," raved another fan of the 119-room hotel in Cap d'Antibes, who also touted the "huge, beautiful rooms" and "great service and wonderful views." Recently, the Oetker Collection property debuted the private Villa Sainte-Anne, with its own pool and views of the Mediterranean.

Moving north, both on the list and within the country, Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa made its World's Best Awards debut this year, nabbing the No. 2 spot. The 47-room hotel in Champillon, outfitted with an idyllic spa executed in partnership with Biologique Recherche, is the sister hotel of Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa, which was named one of the best resorts in the Caribbean last year. Finally, Waldorf Astoria Versailles – Trianon Palace, a World's Best Awards regular, continued to enchant T+L readers, landing at No. 5 this year.

1. Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa, Gargas

Coquillade has mesmerized travelers since it opened in 2008 with its incomparable scenery (think: a lounger-lined pool gazing out toward meticulously trimmed gardens and verdant Luberon hills). The "unbelievably charming" hotel, as one reader succinctly put it, sets an inviting scene with its vineyards and olive groves. The spa is outfitted with a hammam, ice fountain, and 11 cabins where guests can enjoy restorative treatments that use Tata Harper and Biologique Recherche products. Its three restaurants, winery, and bike center also keep guests coming back. Another respondent, who regretted not staying at Coquillade longer, said, "The pool offered a sumptuous retreat and the winery on property was a welcome respite during our days of sightseeing the nearby lavender fields and historic villages."

Indeed, it is an authentic safari lodge tent of about 90 m2, with 3 bedrooms: 2 master bedrooms with double beds 160×200 and an upper floor with 4 single beds. For your comfort, private bathroom and kitchen in the tent; for 4 to 8 people. When luxury and camping come together … it’s the Glamping version Family Ecolodge.

The Spirit of our Lodges, "Out of Africa"

Safari tents and lodges are accommodations fully integrated into nature. On their side, wild animals (squirrels, dormice, birds of all kinds) have integrated these accommodations into their natural habitat, and can therefore evolve on the roof, under the terrace or around the accommodation. In the same way, you stay in the countryside, in a canvas accommodation, in which you will hear all the sounds of nature and the environment. In the countryside it is normal to hear cows bellowing, dogs barking, a farmer harvesting his field or making hay, the sound of rain falling on the roof of the tent, thunder etc. Sleeping in these canvas accommodations sometimes means hearing the sounds of nature or the countryside, so it’s not suitable if you need absolute silence to sleep!

The safari lodge tent is a vacation rental of the Family Ecolodge, the eco-insolite lodge located in Puisaye, between the Loire Valley and Bourgogne. Here the vacations are ecological, authentic and unusual. The Ecolodge is located in the old farms of La Borde, between Briare, St Fargeau and Treigny, and about twenty minutes from Gien or Guédelon.

There are some wonderful wildlife parks in France.

From zoos in chateaux set in fabulous surroundings to zoos in cities or for something a bit different how about watching the animals just metres away from the balcony of your hotel…

Here is our pick of the best wildlife parks and zoos in France:

Zoo Parc de Beauval, between Tours and Vierzon, Loire

Pandas named Yuanzi and Huan Huan arrived in from the city of Chengdu in January 2012. They are the first pandas to be sent to France since the death of Yen Yen in 2000 and there are only 16 other zoos outside of China which have giant pandas on show.

There are over 4500 animals at Beauval Zoo – the largest wildlife collection in France, the zoo has been classed by Forbes Traveler as one of the 15 most beautiful zoos in the world. There are big cats including lion, Bengal tigers, snow leopards, jaguar and pumas; a gorilla complex and many other primates; giraffe, white rhinoceros, elephants and many other species and finally a large aquarium with over 1500 different types of fish from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

The zoo also offers a number of programmes such as “trainer for a day” – you’ll need to organise this in advance but for a day out for the family with a difference this is an exciting opportunity to get up close to the animals.  The day includes feeding animals such as giraffes and meerkats as well as the birds and penguins, preparing food for racoons and baboons and distributing their meals, possibly feeding the reptiles (season dependent) and various other activities.

Cerva Safari Park, Lisieux, Normandy

Just three hours from Calais or an hour from Caen ferry port, the zoo has over 800 animals which live in 120 acres of natural surroundings. There’s a safari train and you’ll see lions, tigers, giraffes, bears, monkeys, kangaroos, zebras and panthers and many other species.  Although it’s not the biggest zoo in France, we’re featuring it because it offers something a bit different.  Attached to the zoo is the Four Seasons Park village which overlooks a small valley and lake where Indian Rhinoceros, Antelopes, and Siamong Gibbons live only a few metres away.  Wallaby and Deer roam freely around the lodges and the lake is home to many exotic birds such as Pelicans, Cranes and Ibis. If you stay at the lodges here you can also book some time with the animals, working alongside the keepers to prepare the meals and feed the animals, always accompanied English speaking guides.

Réserve Africaine de Sigean, near Narbonne in the Languedoc.

3,800 animals in a huge area of natural Mediterranean environment, one of Europe’s oldest safari parks and the biggest tourist attractions in the area.

Réserve Africaine de Sigean is a huge semi-natural wildlife park located in the South of France, between Narbonne and Perpignan, in the town of Sigean on the Mediterranean coast.   There are more than 3,800 animals (around 2000 birds, 900 mammals and 900 reptiles) on nearly 300 hectares.  This is one of the oldest nature parks in Europe and is a grand tourist attraction.

The zoo manages a successful conservation programme and since opening more than 10,000 births have been registered there, some of which are rare including the pink-backed pelican, Grevy’s zebra and Hartmann’s mountain zebra, cheetah, African elephant, wild dog and chimpanzee.

Visiting the park includes a drive through area or you can hire a minibus and guide for up to 15 people starting at a cost of around €100.

Amnéville Zoo, Moselle

Described as a new generation zoo, with an educational orientation and aimed at protecting species. It welcomes more than half a million visitors every year, and it ranks it second in the list of most visited zoos in France.   The tourist board calls it one of the most beautiful zoos in France and there are some  600 animals from 5 continents.  We think this one is high on the list for French families but if you like zoos – you’re very likely to have a great day out at Amnéville Zoo  .

Concerned to sustain the business of the park, to satisfy and retain customers, for fifteen years renovating and investment policy of the “Zoo de La Fleche” enabled the zoo to rank among the top ten French zoos and install the park in its role as a major economic and tourism player in the West of France.

Economic and tourism context has changed in recent years : diversification of tourism offers, hard competition with major sites in neighboring regions, changing customer expectations. With this in mind, the “Zoo de La Fleche” must react, adapt, and continue to develop innovative in order to maintain its leadership. 

The first lodge was built in 2012, we wanted to be able to offer our visitors something different, a chance for them to feel that they are enjoying a real experience with the animals, rather than simply watching them. Plus it bring extra income to the zoo which we can put back in to things such as improving the animal enclosures.

The high-end lodges are set within an enclosed area within the zoo for security so while you can enjoy your own private garden, a bedroom and terrace and an outdoor shower, you can’t leave the compound. However the lodges are arranged so that you can’t see one from another and you feel like you are all alone with the animals.

Each lodge is themed according to the animals they overlook – so most of them have a colonial, on-safari feel with an Asian, North African or Canadian theme. Meanwhile Arctic Lodge, adjacent to the polar bear enclosure, is more like a luxurious ski lodge with fur throws, an open fireplace and a semi-submerged master bedroom so that you can watch the bears swim right past. It also has an outdoor hot tub. The lodges are made from sustainable materials and some include items specially commissioned from Canadian, Indonesian and African artisans. There are also three cosy lodges set four metres above “Nosy Komba" island - an enclosed area of the zoo where lemurs run freely around the paths among the guests.

While they vary in size, design and décor they each include a comfy master bedroom with king-sized bed and a separate cosy cabin with bunk beds – some of which are stacked three high and others have their own viewing windows so kids can watch the animals from their beds. Each cabin also has a proper-sized living room or area and a kitchen, plus a luxurious bathroom with double sinks and huge showers.

A beautifully-presented three-course dinner made by a local gastronomic restaurant and self-served in the lodge is included in the price, as well as breakfast. Extras such as lobster, champagne and flowers can be ordered for special occasions.

Lodges have been very successful – they’re open all year round (361 days out of 365 – they are closed Christmas and New Year) and are usually booked up around a year in advance.

That’s why "Zoo de La Flèche” wants to become the first “Zoological Resort” in the world by combining the referents of animal park with luxury lodges. This is a unique and innovative concept, due in particular to the technical prowess of accommodations.
