About the show: Relive the magic of jazz music great, Al Jarreau ( March 12, 1940 - February 12, 2017)  when 4 musical legends take the stage to pay tribute to his life and work.  The Auntie Karen Foundation showcased Al Jarreau in 2006 and 2016 at the Koger Center. Kirk Whalum, Regina Belle, Chris Walker, and Bob James will join forces to perform Al Jarreau's music as well as some of the tunes they are noted for individually.

Kirk Whalum  (saxophonist) Soulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records, including Cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album, 'Joined at the Hip'. After moving to Los Angeles, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones, and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit “I Will Always Love You.”

Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records, For You, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic and much-lauded Gospel According to Jazz series (Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4). In addition to his many solo projects, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group, BWB, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar)..Kirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgments for his musical excellence, including three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination, and has won two Stellar Awards-Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve-time Grammy nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011) for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter Jerry Peters.

Regina Belle  (vocalist) Regina Belle is an Academy Award-winning and Multi Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and actress. She has a string of hits, including Make It Like It Was, If I Could, Baby Come To Me, and This Is Love. Regina Belle has made a career following her heart and moving gracefully between the worlds of R&B, Gospel, and Jazz. This New Jersey native has earned distinction as an international treasure. Her luminous vocals on the Peabo Bryson duet, A Whole New World, (Grammy’s Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 1994) solidified her place as music royalty.

Belle’s vocal abilities were demonstrated at a young age, with her  fi rst solo at the age of 8, at Friendship Baptist Church in New Jersey church pastored by her uncle, the late Dr. Fred M. Belle, Jr.. In 1985 Belle left Rutgers University, her senior year, just 15 credits shy of completing her degree, to go on the road with the Grammy Award, World Renown Group, THE MANHATTANS. She remained with them for two years before being springboarded into her own career. Thirty years after leaving Rutgers and 10 albums later, Belle earned her Bachelor's Degree in Africana Studies and a Minor in Music from Rutgers.

After releasing her first Gospel album in 2008, Love Forever Shines, with the hit single God Is Good, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This devastating news came at the height of her gospel career. After two surgeries and 10 months of rehabilitation, Belle found herself back at the top of her game, ready to take on the world.

Chris Walker  (vocalist, composer, producer, musician) It is most appropriate if there was anyone to continue the legacy of Al Jarreau; it’s Chris Walker, who served as Al Jarreau’s Musical Director, co-vocalist, and bassist for more than twenty years. In the summer of 2019, Walker released his homage to Jarreau: We’re In This Love Together – Celebrating Al Jarreau, which continues to receive rave reviews from both critics and fans alike. Almost all the musicians on the record and performing in the live shows worked with Jarreau.

Chris Walker’s first release First Time produced two top-five singles, “Giving You All My Love” and “Take Time,” which crossed over to become top 30 on the pop charts. His second release, entitled Sincerely Yours, included the classic song, “How Do You Heal A Broken Heart,” written by Chris and Carole Bayer Sager. It has received over 60 million views on YouTube. His former teacher, Gil Goldstein, brought to fruition a longtime dream of Walker’s to work with 7-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau and continued working with him as his Musical Director, bassist, and co-vocalist until Jarreau’s passing in 2017.

Among other highlights in Chris Walker’s varied and ever-evolving musical career include Co-Executive Producer for “Bossa Nova Noites,” which produced shows for the USOC, French, German and Japanese Houses during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, featuring Daniel Jobim and Alexandra Jackson, being part of “Joined at the Hip;” a group with Bob James and Kirk Whalum, and performing regularly on Dave Koz’s cruises.

Bob James  (pianist) Keyboardist Bob James is a man who has worn many musical hats. He began as a progressive jazz pianist in the early ‘60s; he even recorded for the famed underground avant-garde label ESP. By the ‘70s, however, he’d incorporated electric keyboards and become a star in the burgeoning jazz-funk and fusion genres, making records later to be sampled by countless hip-hop artists. Along the way, he was also involved in the soundtracks for everything from Serpico to the TV show Taxi and worked as an arranger and producer for Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, and others. Later in his career, James has done everything from joining the smooth jazz supergroup Fourplay to recording commercially successful classical titles.

Since I Fell For You by Bob James and David Sanborn featuring the vocals from Al Jarreau, taken from the classic 1986 album ‘Double Vision’. The album spent 63 weeks on the Billboard charts, won a Grammy Award for ‘Best Jazz Fusion Performance’, and went on to sell a million copies. His latest release, Feel Like Making LIVE is a celebration of Bob’s unique artistry and reflects a storied career that stretches back 59 years. James is reunited with the piano trio format, which was how the Grammy-winning Missouri-born musician began his professional music career back in 1963.

Better Together presents The Jazz Soul of Al Jarreau

April 14, 2023 - SOLD OUT 7:30 p.m. - $25

Better Together is a diverse group of top-level musical souls on a journey to unite people around amazing music and good vibes. Featuring vocalist Bruce A. Henry (“bell-pure voice”— Miami Herald), guitarist Henry Johnson (“impressive”—L.A. Times), pianist Jo Ann Daugherty (“★★★★”—Downbeat), acoustic bassist Joshua Ramos, and drummer Ryan Bennett, the band taps into the universal power of music to bring people together during these times when we need a common bridge. More than a tribute — this show explores the jazz soul of the legendary Al Jarreau with an approach that treats these tunes as living, breathing pieces of music. https://www.facebook.com/bettertogetherpresents/

This performance is sponsored by  J. Murray & Associates

Meet the Band - Better Together

Bruce A. Henry Bruce A. Henry is a vocalist, performer, and educator extraordinaire. Henry's eclectic vocal style has been influenced by legends such as John Coltrane, Leon Thomas, Gil Scott Heron, Al Jarreau, Nina Simone, and Marvin Gaye.

Bruce possesses a three-octave range, a pure voice with versatility few can match. Bruce's music has taken him to five continents and he has recorded for Disney, HBO, and numerous national ad campaigns. In addition, he has performed with and opened for the likes of Doc Severinson, Roberta Flack, Chris Botti, Ramsey Lewis, Stephane Grapelli, Jimmy Jam, and The Sounds of Blackness.

Henry Johnson The Chicago-born guitarist began playing at age twelve. While spending some formative time in Memphis, he started playing gospel music at age thirteen. By age fourteen, Johnson was playing in R&B groups. Although Johnson’s parents brought him up hearing the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Joe Williams, and other artists of that era, it was not until 1967 that Johnson was formally introduced to jazz by hearing guitarist Wes Montgomery. In 1969, Johnson and his family then moved back to Chicago where he developed a reputation on the south side as a good local jazz guitarist. In 1976, he went on the road with jazz organist Jack McDuff and was called to work with vocalist, Donny Hathaway in 1977.

In 1979, Johnson began playing with jazz pianist, Ramsey Lewis. And in 1985, jazz legend, Joe Williams added Johnson to his regular group. Johnson’s musical roots run deep into gospel, blues, and jazz. His strongest and earliest influences were Kenny Burrell, George Benson, and most significantly, Wes Montgomery. While influenced by these great guitarists, Johnson also cites the music of Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, big bands, and jazz orchestras as integral forces which shaped his sound and style.

Jo Ann Daugherty

Pianist Jo Ann Daugherty’s most recent album Bring Joy earned a 4-star review from Downbeat Magazine (January 2017) and was listed as one of their “Best Albums of 2017.” She has performed in jazz festivals and clubs throughout the U.S. and abroad (Chicago Jazz Fest, Satchmo Fest in New Orleans, Jazz at Lincoln Center-Shanghai, Dizzy’s NYC, Snug Harbor, the Jazz Showcase, Green Mill, Winters Jazz Club, Andy’s and many more), as well as in premier Chicago productions as West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar at the Lyric Opera.

As a music director, she played throughout the US as conductor of the Jersey Boys national touring company and holds the honor of being the first woman in Motown history to conduct the orchestra (touring with the show Motown: The Musical ). In addition, she has produced the music for two live PBS concert specials with the vocal group Under the Streetlamp and most recently played piano and music-supervised for To the Ends of the Earth , a PBS wildlife documentary featuring narration by Jane Goodall. Her trio maintains an active schedule in Chicago, including a steady Monday night engagement at Bandera restaurant on Michigan Ave in Chicago. Read more at joanndaugherty.com .

Joshua Ramos Joshua Ramos was born in 1982 in Chicago to a musical family. His parents Jose and Gladys Ramos were both gifted singers and Jose also played viola. Gladys Ramos had a vocal trio with her two sisters Marilu and Rosita and this all had an impact on Joshua. He first picked up the bass in the seventh grade under the instruction of Bass Player, Margaro Torres (cousin of famed Salsa Pianist/Arranger Edwin Sanchez) who played at his church. Margaro Torres taught and influenced Joshua to play and really kindled his interest in music.

Joshua makes a busy career out of teaching music at various locations and performing. He has been on television numerous times in the United States Europe and Central America. He has opened for Stevie Wonder, Spyro Gyra, and Vernon Reid with Liquid Soul. With the Occidental Brothers band he ha performed at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center the Montreal, and Toronto Jazz Festivals he has shared the bill with Cindy Blackman, Lonnie Plaxico, Ben Allison, Vijay Ayer, Jason Moran, Andrew Byrd, and many others.

Ryan Bennett As a drummer, percussionist, and teacher in the Chicago area, Ryan is an in-demand performer in many styles of music. He played drums in the hit Broadway show Jersey Boys , both the Chicago production and national touring company. Other performances of note include shows with pop songstress Tori Amos, trumpeter Randy Brecker, and guitarist John Abercrombie. Ryan has performed at clubs and festival venues at home and abroad and has toured extensively throughout the US. He has appeared on three PBS specials playing drumset and percussion.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the  Illinois Arts Council Agency .

Vocalist Kurt Elling Releases New Rendition of Al Jarreau’s “Boogie Down” | LISTEN! New EP “Guilty Pleasures” feat. Charlie Hunter and Nate Smith Arrives Feb. 17th, 2023

al jarreau tour 2023

Multi-GRAMMY Award Winner Kurt Elling Releases New Rendition of Al Jarreau’s “Boogie Down”

New Covers EP Guilty Pleasures Featuring Charlie Hunter and Nate Smith Out February 17th

Follow up to Elling & Hunter’s 2021 GRAMMY Nominated Album SuperBlue

January 27, 2023: Multi-GRAMMY award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling released his new rendition of Al Jarreau’s “Boogie Down” — it’s the second single from his upcoming release Guilty Pleasures , a 6-track EP featuring guitarist Charlie Hunter and special guest drummer Nate Smith . Bursting with Elling’s trademark charisma, energy and showmanship, Guilty Pleasures (out February 17th) features six high-octane covers. WRTI praised Elling’s recording of “Boogie Down,” saying “Mixed with drums and vocals way out front, so that they seem to leap out of your speakers, the track highlights a side of Elling that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. When folks talk about his place in the jazz-vocal lineage, they often rightly note the moves he copped from Jon Hendricks and Mark Murphy — but don’t always mention Jarreau, a springier and more slithery influence.”

“I’ve finally had the chance to cover some Al Jarreau!” says Elling. “Al was always so kind to me and full of joy and dancing, and I’m excited to tip my hat to his loving memory.”

Guilty Pleasures is a continuation of Elling’s SuperBlue collaboration with Charlie Hunter. A torrent of boisterous funk, indelible beats and all-too-current lyrics, 2021’s debut SuperBlue album was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 2022 GRAMMY Awards, and was met with acclaim from Chicago Tribune, Downbeat, WBGO, Jazziz, and more. The second SuperBlue album will be released in fall of 2023.

Guilty Pleasures offers listeners a guiltless treat — along with Al Jarreau’s “Boogie Down,” covers on the EP include Eddie Money’s “Baby Hold On,” PJ Morton’s “Sticking to My Guns,” AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” a new rendition of Nate Smith’s “Bounce,” and Sam & Dave’s “Wrap It Up,” which was released earlier this month.

“Charlie and I are over the moon to be able to put out some tracks with our friend Nate Smith,” says Elling. “We had one afternoon and some random song ideas going into the studio… Man! I hope we can do it again some time!”

Elling first met Hunter when both were signed to Blue Note Records in the late 1990s. They struck up an immediate rapport, leading to Elling’s guest appearance on Hunter’s album Songs From the Analog Playground. With his unassailable cred in both worlds, Hunter bridges the gap between the jazz and groove camps. “Between the records he’s made with cats like D’Angelo and John Mayer and A Tribe Called Quest, Charlie is a made guy in that world, just as he has the respect of jazz people,” says Elling.

The universal accolades for Elling don’t always mention his relentless, career-long, search for new vistas. He’s recorded an album of global love songs (Passion World) and transformed the Christmas tradition (The Beautiful Day); he’s written lyrics to jazz classics, staked out 1960s-70s rock-n-roll (on 1619 Broadway), and entered into a galvanic partnership, on disc and on tour, with Branford Marsalis’s quartet. He earned his first GRAMMY for updating the historic collaboration between John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (Dedicated to You), and his most recent statuette for Secrets Are The Best Stories, his Latin-inspired project with modern piano giant Danilo Perez.

Guilty Pleasures will be released February 17th via Edition Records.

Tracklisting: 1. Baby Hold On (Eddie Money Cover) 2. Wrap It Up (Sam & Dave Cover) 3. Boogie Down (Al Jarreau Cover) 4. Bounce (Nate Smith Cover) 5. Sticking to My Guns (PJ Morton Cover) 6. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (AC/DC Cover)
