6 Apps That Make Planning Group Travel Easier

Planning a trip among friends or family can be tricky. Help keep everyone on the same page with these group travel planning apps that organize itineraries, expenses and photos.

Available on iOS and Android Prava is an itinerary manager that offers in-app messaging, a to do list and notepad, perfect for planning group trips. Additional features make this app a great travel companion as well. From the app, you can share your location with other group members, perfect if you’re arriving in a destination from many different locations. You can also share trip photos and calculate expenses through the app.

At the conclusion of your vacation, your group can choose to share part or all of your itinerary with other Prava users, inspiring other groups to follow in your footsteps.

Available on iOS only; Android coming soon No matter where you are, what currency you paid in or who paid, figure out who owes what with group travel app Splittr. Divide hotel, grocery, attraction and transportation costs between friends or family. The app converts any expense to your preferred currency and allows you to split bills unevenly between group members. After your vacation, export PDF or CSV reports to let everyone know how much they owe other travelers. You unfortunately aren’t able to pay your balance using the app.

For an app that includes all the same functions and works on both iOS and Android, choose Splid.

Available on iOS and Android This is another app the manages expenses within a group. It shares many of the same features as Splittr and Splid, with two exceptions.

  • Splitwise integrates with Venmo, making it ideal for groups who already share money via the app.
  • There is no option to change currencies in the app, so it’s more appropriate for groups traveling domestically.

Available on iOS and Android Whether you’re planning a spring break trip, bachelorette party or family reunion, keep all the details in a single place with Travefy. Use the chat and polling function to discuss details, collect money (there is a fee to use a credit card) and start building your sharable itinerary. Forward confirmation emails to the app and your flight, rental car, accommodation, activities and restaurant reservations will appear in one place.

You can view your itinerary on a map and search nearby for other attractions, sorted by hotels, activities and food. Whether you imported an activity or Travefy suggested it, your group will be able to see Trip Advisor reviews for the attraction. During the trip, track your expenses (multiple popular currencies are available) in the app so your group can see who owes who what and pay via credit card or PayPal after heading home.

Available on iOS and Android This app is a less robust group vacation planning tool, but if you’re looking for something simple, Tripline may be for you. Multiple group members can map out your accommodations and the attractions you’re planning to explore, then share the map with other people who may be interested in following your trip.

Your group members can upload photos and add text for any location on your Tripline map. The app takes these photos and creates a simple animation outlining your trip, which is available for other Tripline users and can be shared on social media.

5 Group Travel Planning Apps to Make Trips With Friends and Family Easier

Planning your next vacation with friends or family will be easier with these free group travel planning apps that promise to make everyone happy.

Travel is more fun if you can share the experiences with your loved ones. On the other hand, planning a trip with a group can be stressful, given the different logistics, opinions, requirements, and interests. These travel planning apps for groups try to make it easier to come up with an itinerary that all your friends can contribute to and feel happy with.

Each of the apps approaches the problem of group travel planning in different ways. So you'll need to keep in mind which one your group is bound to feel most comfortable with.

All the apps in this list are free or have a free tier that has enough features to make you feel like using it for an upcoming trip.

1. Hoku (Android, iOS): Super Simple Group Travel Planning App

If your group isn't too tech-savvy, they're going to be overwhelmed with some of the apps in this list. Simplicity, or the lack of extraneous features, is sometimes the best way to get people to participate in such apps. Hoku keeps it as simple and easy as possible, giving you the ability to make your trip with friends and chat about it.

As the creator, you can give a trip name, add the city or place you'll be visiting, pick start and end dates, and invite co-travelers via email. In the trip, you can add multiple activities. When you open the activity pane, you'll see popular tourist attractions from the chosen location. Tap any to add them to your itinerary while also choosing a date. The activities are then arranged chronologically in the main tab.

All participants in that Hoku group can use the Hoku chat to talk about the plans. A dedicated chat space for the trip is a nice way to keep away clutter from your regular group chat on IM. Once the trip is ready, you can also export it as a document and send it via email.

2. MiTravel (Web): Travel Planning Board for Groups to Collaborate

Trello or other kanban boards to plan your tasks help you visualize everything you have to do about a project. MiTravel uses that system to make a travel planning board, where you collaborate with others to add various items for your shared trip and even conduct polls to reach decisions quickly. Best of all? It's completely free with no hidden costs.

When planning a new trip, you'll have to first add the location (country, region, or city) and trip dates. Then, invite any co-travelers to your planning board. By default, each trip has a few columns set up: Transit, Stays, Notes, Attractions, and Foods. You can add a card to any of these and give it a header color to indicate what it's about. Each card has a simple text box, but you can also add attachments for things like your flight tickets or hotel bookings.

The Explore tab lets you search for and add places you intend to visit. You can save any attraction to your board, adding the group it belongs to. Cards can be moved around between groups easily.

When you're traveling as a group, there are several decisions you need to make together. MiTravel offers a simple poll maker to get everyone's opinion on an issue, which is visible to all participants.

3. Troupe (Web, iOS): Planning, Polling, Voting, and Shared Itinerary for Group Travel

Troupe is one of the most robust apps made for planning a trip as a group. It includes a host of features that aim to solve the problems that every group has experienced in the planning stage of a trip. Once your invitees join, they can choose to be marked as "interested" or "going" so that you can differentiate between the certainties and the maybes.

Your Troupe dashboard has different sections to make trip planning easier:

  • Polls: Create a poll about any decision related to the trip, with multiple choices, and let travelers vote.
  • Dates: Add your travel dates and any notes related to them.
  • Destinations: Select one or multiple destinations and align them to the overall travel dates.
  • Stays: Add accommodation directly, or add multiple options that your travelers can vote on. Whether voting is allowed or not is up to you.
  • Activities: Like Stays, add multiple activities by searching on Google Maps, adding direct links, or writing custom plans. Choose whether participants get to vote or not.
  • Itinerary: Create a custom itinerary for the trip based on the dates, destinations, stays, and activities that you have decided on.
  • Notes: Add any additional information about the trip that anyone might need to know.

Troupe also allows anyone to send a "Broadcast" message that can reach all participants. It's great to use for things other than reminders or deadlines, both of which are options you can set for voting or polling in Troupe.

4. Plan Harmony (Web): Calendar Planning and Budget Tracking for Group Trips

Plan Harmony lets you create multiple trips to invite friends to by simply sharing a link, after which you can collaborate to plan it. Once you've set the dates of travel, the default view shows a calendar, so you are planning as if in a shared Google Calendar.

Anyone can add an event or an idea to this calendar, where the basic difference is that an event is something you have all agreed upon, while an idea is something you will vote upon. Under the event or idea title, you'll have to choose a category such as flight, accommodation, attraction, food/restaurant, etc. Each category has different prompts for the details you add to the event, such as flight number, car type or confirmation code, locations and links, and so on. You can also add notes and descriptions, give it a custom color, set its date and time, and finally add what it's going to cost.

Cost tracking is a major part of group travel, and Plan Harmony seeks to make it easier by letting you add costs for each event and specifying whether it's the group cost that's to be evenly split or the per-person cost. In the Budget dashboard, you'll see a breakdown of all these expenses and a per-person analysis of what you're spending on the trip.

With Plan Harmony's paid pro version, you get more robust budget tools such as exporting them to a spreadsheet, multiple costs for different people, etc. It also unlocks other features such as syncing with a calendar app of your choice and adding unlimited checklists or attachments to events.

5. Mobili (Android, iOS): Best Mobile App for Group Travel Planning

If you prefer a mobile app over a desktop, Mobili is the best option. It has all the major features of apps like Troupe and Plan Harmony in a simple interface for phones.

When you make a new trip and invite your friends, the main screen shows the itinerary. There are three broad categories: Travel, Lodging, and Activity. In each, you can add different details like departure and arrival times, booking numbers or confirmation codes, links, and images or screenshots of the bookings. Any item you add can be made private, public, or duplicated to all travelers.

The Split feature is a powerful budget tracker. You can add any expense here, noting the amount paid and what it was for, the currency, when and who paid, and which participants will be splitting this expense. Expenses can also be made private if you wish. As you keep adding, it'll all be calculated in the Overview tab. It's almost as good as some of the best bill-splitting apps for groups .

Mobili also has a built-in group chat to discuss your travel plans on IM. The Notes tab lets you add any pertinent things to remember. And in Compare, you can check the different details added by participants to quickly compare things like arrival and departure times.

Ask What's Non-Negotiable, Not What's Preferred

When making travel decisions as a group, you'll often come to a point where there isn't any consensus. Most apps and travel experts recommend taking a vote to figure out what common ground you can reach. However, that can still leave some people miffed. In such cases, try approaching the issue by changing the question.

Instead of voting, or perhaps before voting, ask what everyone's non-negotiable item is. Sometimes, people don't know what they want but are clear about what they don't want. And with that knowledge, others can help come up with a decision or solution that satisfies the whole group.

Best Apps For Stress-Free Group Travel

By Mark Ellwood

Travefy Splittr and Prava apps

Bachelor parties. College reunions. Multi-generational family getaways. Hunting trips. Girls’ weekends. Even buddy mooning . Call it what you will (though please don’t let buddy mooning happen), there’s been a boom in group vacations recently. One recent survey last year, conducted by travel marketing specialist MMGY Global, found that around a third of US adults who’d spent at least one night away from home had taken a vacation with friends—among millennials, that number was even higher, at 50%.

No wonder, then, that a spate of startup apps aimed at making such trips less stressful and more seamless has emerged. We examined the offerings in three key categories to identify the best option in each, as well as some honorable mentions for runners-up. Here’s Condé Nast Traveler ’s pick of group trip apps.

Best for Trip-planning: TRAVEFY (iOS, Android; free) This app collates flight and hotel info into a single, shareable itinerary; it also bundles online reviews and contact information into that outline. You can share the results with all, or just select members, of the group (handy if everyone’s flights, for example, are from different airports, but you’re all staying at the same hotel). Solicit input or run suggestions by everyone via the built-in chat feature, or even run a Twitter-style poll to settle the final decision. Divvying expenses at trip’s end is also included, though unfortunately, there’s a fee for settling the final group expenses via credit card on the app.

Runners-up: Tripit (iOS, Android; free) is very similar to Travefy, but one caveat: don't shell out for the premium version as the upgrades offered, like real-time flight alerts, don’t justify the $49 fee. Combotrip (iOS, Android; free) is more focused on collaborative planning, rather than assigning a group leader. But when it comes to travel planning, remember that democracy can be a time-suck.

Best for Keeping Tally: SPLITTR (iOS only; $1.99) This app has a single mission: simplifying the process of settling the tally, especially when you travel. It works offline (so no roaming fees) and integrates currency conversion—add expenses as you go, then settle them in dollars, or whatever your home currency might be. Each time you add an activity, you can tag whomever in the group participated; at trip’s end, Splittr instantly generates a final bill for each traveler as a pdf via email. It’s a pity, though, that you can’t use the app to pay—you’ll need to use an outside service, like Venmo or Paypal, to actually transfer the money. It’s currently iOS-only but developer Raphael Wichmann assures Condé Nast Traveler an Android version should be released soon.

Runners-up: Splitwise (iOS, Android; free) integrates Venmo directly into the app. Unfortunately, it only processes transactions in whichever currency you’ve set as your default, which is a major downside if you’re traveling abroad .

Best for Keeping in Touch: PRAVA (iOS, Android; free) This app includes an itinerary manager much like that by Travefy, but Prava has other, more compelling features. It stands out for the ability to not only message within the app but also to share your location when you do, so it’s an ideal tool to make meeting up in an unfamiliar city more seamless. There’s also a nifty photo-sharing feature that will streamline that end-of-trip rush to make sure everyone has all the best shots.

Runners-up: Friendlynk (iOS only, free) focuses on location tracking, alongside listings of events in any given location—an ideal group-organizing tool at a sports game or festival , or even in your home city. Vamoos (iOS, Android; free) is primarily aimed at tour group members—the interactive ticker that counts down to the group meeting time is a thoughtful touch, though.

Group Trip Planner App: What is Troupe?

by Danielle Owen | May 31, 2023 | Group Travel | 0 comments

app to plan trip with friends

The Ultimate Group Trip Planner App

Planning a getaway with family or friends and looking for a trip planner app to help you figure out the logistics? That’s where Troupe comes in. There are endless details that go into planning a group trip. Coordinating flights, arranging transportation, and figuring out accommodations can feel like impossible tasks with multiple people involved.

A group trip planner like Troupe allows you to consolidate the planning into one place. No more endless email threads or constant texting back and forth with questions about the itinerary.

What is the Troupe group trip planner app?

Troupe is a travel planning app that makes group travel easy. Troupe’s intuitively designed app allows group travel planners to seamlessly coordinate, plan, and book group trips all in one place. From voting on the destination to sharing flight bookings, Troupe helps everyone in the group quickly and easily communicate all things related to the group getaway.

Bachelor parties , girls trips , family reunions, couples’ getaways… you-name-it. Whether you’re flying, driving, or walking to your destination doesn’t matter. Troupe is designed to help with the logistics, no matter how big or small.

So how does Troupe work?  Check out these features.

(…or click here to start using Troupe now.)

Troupe trip planner app features

Troupe was built off the massive demand for a seamless, efficient group travel planner. The app was developed and perfected based on hundreds of hours of interviews with travelers from all walks of life.

This taught us which things that are most important to group travel planning, like an easy voting system to figure out dates, destinations, and accommodations, for example.

So what are the primary features of the Troupe group trip planner app? Check them out:

1. Itinerary all in one place

Troupe isn’t just useful prior to travel . Once you’re on the road or at your destination, Troupe still offers all group travel members the ability to quickly reference the information for all activities.

No more “Where and when is dinner tonight?” text messages for the planners to field from the whole group. Group members can all just open their Tripsite in the app or online and see for themselves.

So how do Troupe’s easy group travel planning features work?

app to plan trip with friends

2. Voting system in the trip planner app

Getting everyone to agree can seem impossible at times, but Troupe’s group trip planner app gives everyone a voice and allows all group travel members to clearly see the results of polls. It helps ease the frustration that can come from getting people to agree on things.

It’s the ultimate group travel planner question: “Where should we go on our group trip?”

And while it may lead to stressful discussions sometimes, it’s also one of the best parts of planning a trip.

Troupe helps take the stress out of destination selection with straightforward voting. Choose your destinations, set them as options, and all group members can log on to vote for their favorite.

And we all know there are so many more decisions to make once a destination is chosen (or even before, depending on the order you plan group trips !).

Figure out when to travel by letting group members vote on the dates that work best for them. Once everyone has voted, you’ll be able to easily see the dates that work the best for the majority of the group.

Voting is available for accommodations and activities as well.

An iphone showing the Troupe UI with a screen that shows the voting results for a VRBO that has been suggested for a group trip

3. Deadlines/Reminders

Troupe also helps you implement deadlines and reminders. The app allows you to send out reminders or quick nudges to group members, taking the pressure off the planner and easing everyone along throughout the process.

4. Sharing Information

Say it with me: All your confirmation numbers are in one place. Everyone’s flight numbers for easy tracking. Hotel reservations with the booking name, phone number, address, and all other important info.

In addition, you can share a list of possible flight options and see what others have booked. As a group, this helps minimize waiting around at the airport and makes it easier to consolidate pick-ups and drop-offs.

5. Booking your travels

Troupe doesn’t just help with planning. Once you’ve voted on your favorite accommodations and found your perfect hotel or Vrbo, go ahead and book it directly on Troupe . No need to even open a new browser window.

The best trip planner apps to make your travels easier

gabriela-headshot

Booking a trip can be an exciting yet daunting task. As if booking airfare, hotel, and transportation weren't enough, you also need to consider food, sights, and attractions. As a travel lover myself, I often dread planning and preparing for a trip. Not only do I never have the time, but I often get oversaturated by the vast amount of information found online and the fear of getting scammed.

Also:  The best travel credit cards

Over the years, I've found the best websites and apps to help smooth out the planning process. These apps help me keep track of all my reservations, send me booking reminders, and guarantee I always find the best prices -- because there is nothing worse than falling for tourist traps or overpriced offerings.

Whether you are a spontaneous or a nitty-gritty planner traveler, ZDNET has tested and reviewed the best trip planner apps on the market. Our top pick for the best trip planner site and app is Booking.com due to its easy-to-use user interface, extensive booking capabilities, and pricing. However, since not every trip or traveler is the same, we've included several options to help you plan and stay organized during your travels.

Keep reading to learn more about ZDNET's expert-tested and reviewed trip planner apps.

The best trip planner apps of 2023

Booking.com, best overall trip planner.

  • Multiple bookings
  • Great deals
  • Can earn points from bookings and reservations
  • Easy to use
  • No group planning
  • Can't organize bookings per trip

Booking.com features:   Platform: App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

When planning my trips, I always make a stop at the Booking.com app, especially when reserving hotels. I find their user interface visually appealing and easy to use, and that it provides just the right amount of information I need when scrolling through hotel suggestions. Personally, I enjoy that I can add my top picks to my favorites with a quick tap of a heart, glance through reviews, look at cancellation policies, and even find out how far away hotels are from key spots. Through Booking.com, you can also book flights, car rentals, taxis, and city attractions, making it a great all-in-one place to plan and book upcoming weekend getaways or longer vacations. While I have personally never used the car rentals, taxis, or city attractions components of the app, I enjoy knowing that if I ever needed to, I can quickly hop on my phone and glance at the latest offerings.

My favorite feature when using Booking.com to plan trips is the offers and promotions it displays for users. In the app, when you click your profile, you can see your "Genius" loyalty program status as well as discover the best deals around the world for your specific chosen dates. My only critique of Booking.com is that it does not enable group trip planning or let you organize your bookings per trip. This means if you are planning a trip with a friend, only one person can book and have access to reservations.

Best trip planner for organization

  • Synced with e-mail inbox
  • Organizes reservations no matter where you book
  • Works offline
  • Can't make any bookings
  • Need to pay for advanced features
  • UI could use an upgrade

TripIt features:   Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility: iOS and Android | Pricing: Free or $49 per year | Booking: No | Group planning: Yes

In terms of planning a trip, creating an itinerary, and keeping all your information in one place, TripIt is one of the best travel apps to keep yourself organized. When you first create an account, TripIt will sync with your inbox and automatically add all of your upcoming flights and reservations to your account. You can then modify each trip to include as little or as much information as you'd like. As someone who likes to be spontaneous when traveling, I usually only add the essentials: flight information, hotel reservations, and important documents. However, if you like to plan your trips down by the hour, you can also include activities, restaurant reservations, transportation, and more in your trip plan to share with fellow travelers.

As your trip approaches, TripIt will also send you packing reminders, give you COVID-19 travel guidance, and show transportation options. While you can get most of the essential features within the free version of the app (this is the one I use), you can also pay $49 a year to get advanced features such as check-in reminders, real-time flight alerts, point tracking, and even notifications for drops in airfare prices.

Keep in mind that while TripIt gives you transportation options and finds places near your hotel, you cannot book or make any reservations directly from the app. The app is solely used to organize and keep track of all of your travel plans in one place, no matter where you book them.

Best AI trip planner

  • Personalized travel itinerary
  • Hotel booking
  • Can modify recommendations
  • Group planning enabled
  • Only available as a website
  • No flight or restaurant booking

Guide features:   Platform: Website  Compatibility: all major browsers |  Pricing:  Free | Booking: Yes, but hotels only | Group Planning: Yes  Generative AI is everyone's favorite buzzword this year, and slowly but surely, it has been making its way across all industries -- including the travel industry. Guide is an innovative AI travel planning tool that creates personalized travel itineraries based on your preferences. (Full disclosure, it's also owned by ZDNET's sister company. It's currently in private beta, but you can join a wait list.) All you need to do is select your destination, the dates, whether you are traveling alone or in a group, your budget, and the types of activities you are looking for, and Guide will do the planning.

After generating a trip itinerary for you based on your prompt, Guide then lets you modify and customize the itinerary to your liking. I recently used Guide to plan a six-day trip to Austin, Texas, and this was the feature I enjoyed the most, since I had specific restaurants and activities I wanted to incorporate into my trip, but I also needed some additional recommendations. While you can't book flights or restaurant reservations through Guide, you can book and find great hotel deals powered by Expedia on the platform.

Guide will also give you an overall budget for your trip, a packing list, and a comprehensive list of things to know about your destination -- which may be helpful for some more than others. While my trip to Austin was a solo trip, Guide has a feature where you can invite other fellow travelers to collaborate in planning your trip through Guide's chatbot, GuideBot. This chatbot also works sort of like ChatGPT, where you can ask GuideBot questions about your trip, your destination, or recommendations. Keep in mind you can not ask GuideBot to directly modify your trip for you, and instead need to manually do it yourself -- believe me, I tried.

Tripadvisor

Best trip planner app for reviews.

  • Countless reviews
  • Used by travelers worldwide
  • Variety of information
  • Booking capabilities
  • Great for local spots
  • Booking is not its strongest feature and you may not always find the best deals
  • Doesn't vet reviews

Tripadvisor  features: Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

Reading customer reviews is one of the most important steps when planning a trip. While you shouldn't base all of your decisions on reviews, you should consider past customer experiences to get a feel for the brand and company you are about to trust, or the experience you are going to pay for.  When it comes to travel reviews, Tripadvisor is the best trip planner app to rely on. Since the platform has so many reviews for restaurants, activities, accommodations, and locations all over the world, it is always easy and convenient to log onto the app or website to help you make an educated decision. (However, remember that not all Tripadvisor reviews are legit, since the platform does not independently verify customer postings.) Beyond reviews, TripAdvisor also lets you book hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more while also providing detailed insights into their offerings -- including cancellation policies, ratings, and features.

Tripadvisor's "Travelers' Choice" best-of list is also a popular part of its platform, allowing visitors to see top-rated destinations, hotels, restaurants, and things to do around the world. With Tripadvisor, you can plan a trip yourself from scratch, hire a trip designer, or get a custom itinerary built by AI.

Best trip planner app for transportation

  • Great multi-mode travel comparison
  • convenient and seamless transportation booking
  • Multiple currency and language availability
  • Flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest
  • Limited offers depending on the country or city of travel
  • Not the most reliable customer service

Omio features:  Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes, transportation only |  Group planning:  No

I first discovered Omio when a friend recommended it to me while I was studying abroad in Spain, and ever since I downloaded it, it has become my go-to app for booking the best deals and fares on transportation within Europe. The concept behind Omio is simple: You plug in your departure and arrival location, including the number of people you are traveling with, and add whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip journey. Omio will then show you the best deals by train, bus, or plane to and from your desired destination, including how much time each option will take you and the number of stops.

The German-based travel booking site is great at aggregating travel information from multiple sites, allowing you to view all of your transportation options in one place. This is incredibly beneficial when planning trips within Europe since there are several ways you can cross each border and often various languages and regulations to keep in mind. Omio is set in English but has multiple additional languages available, as well as currency options. During my time abroad, I solely used Omio to book all of my transportation, including planning a 17-day trip across seven different European countries. Overall, using Omio was not only convenient and seamless but also helped me save hundreds of dollars by helping me maximize my travel time by switching between flights, trains, and buses.

However, since returning from Europe, I have not used Omio as much as I thought I would -- maybe because I have a car and take most of my trips by plane. And Omio's flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest compared to Booking.com or Skyscanner's, which heavily focus on flight deals. I have also found they have some limitations depending on the country or city you are traveling in. Be mindful of the deals and tickets you buy through Omio since some tickets are non-refundable, and some customers complain their customer service is not the best -- although I have yet to have any issues with them.

What is the best trip planner app?

Booking.com gets our vote for the best trip planner app due to its wide selection of accommodations, its points and promotions offerings, and its easy-to-use user interface. Not only does Booking.com help you find the best deals throughout your trip, but it will also help you stay organized throughout your trip by keeping all of your reservations in one place. To determine which trip planner app or combination of trip planners is best for you, check out this comparison chart below.

Which is the right trip planner app for you?

The best trip planner app ultimately depends on your travel and planning style. If you like booking and planning everything in one place while also earning points and getting great deals, then Booking.com is your top app. However, if you are looking for a place to keep all of your accommodations, reservations, and activity details organized, then TripIt is a better app for you. Check out the following chart to help you find the best trip planner app or a combination of apps for you to plan your next adventure.

How did we choose these trip planner apps?

To find the best trip planner apps, we drew upon real-life experiences and tested their performance and capabilities during our latest trips. Ultimately, we weighted the following factors when choosing which trip planners to include on our list:

  • Features: Each app can vary significantly with the features it offers, whether it is solely to book flights and hotels, help you plan your next trip using AI, or help you find the best deals and booking information, each app on this list can help you address several common inconveniences that present themselves while planning that next adventure.
  • Compatibility: An app is of little use if it does not work with your devices, so we look to see what compatibility each trip-planning app offers and which platforms you can access it from. Personally, I enjoy apps that combine an app and website component since this quickly helps me switch between my wide computer screen and my tiny yet portable iPhone screen.
  • Customer reviews: We study real customer reviews and ratings to evaluate customer satisfaction and service. This is incredibly important since most times when you travel, you visit an unknown city or country, and you should be mindful of past experiences others have had.
  • Cost : Most trip planner apps are free, but you may have to upgrade to receive special access to exclusive features or deals. If your app is already free, it means you only have to pay a small amount (often unnoticeable) when you book your accommodations.

What is a trip planner app?

A trip planner app is an app that provides organizational features for your upcoming trip. It is often free and incorporates trip planning tools, whether you are traveling by ground, water or air.

How does a trip planner app work?

A trip planner app can incorporate special features, like an itinerary, calendar, reservation and booking hub, and map assistance. Depending on the app you choose, there is even trip-sharing with friends and family to simplify the entire trip planning process.

How much does a trip planner app cost?

Most trip planner apps are free, but some may offer in-app purchases to upgrade or enhance your experience. Within this list, only Tripit costs money, but only for their advanced features version, which costs $49 a year. However, you can get access to most if not all, trip-planning features, through their free version.

Are there alternative trip planner apps worth considering?

As I mentioned earlier, trip planning heavily depends on your personal style of travel and preferences. However, whether you like to plan your trips down by the minute or prefer to just have the basics, there are several apps that can optimize your planning. Here are a few apps worth considering that almost made it onto our list:

7 Free Travel Planning AI and ChatGPT Apps to Get an Instant Itinerary

Quick links.

  • PLAN by ixigo
  • Trip Planner AI
  • Vacay Chatbot
  • Layla, Wonderplan, and PLAN by ixigo are AI travel planning apps with customizable itineraries.
  • iplan.ai offers detailed itineraries for popular tourist cities based on interests and budget.
  • Curiosio plans road trips on all continents, while Trip Planner AI helps with activity selection and cost estimation.

You can tell a travel agent your preferred dates, the place you want to visit, and your budget, and expect a full itinerary of what to do there based on your preferences. But can AI do the same job?

These free travel planning apps use AI and machine-learning tools like ChatGPT to prepare an itinerary for you in a few seconds, and we took them for a spin.

Layla describes itself as an AI trip planner, meaning you can use it to decide your vacation destination, create itineraries, and find suitable hotels and flights.

If you are uncertain about your destination or would like suggestions, you can ask Layla for advice regarding your trip. Otherwise, enter your destination and ask Layla to create your itinerary. Within a few seconds, you'll get a detailed plan for your trip.

As Layla is a chatbot, you can enter a prompt to ask it to change your itinerary. For instance, ask it to focus more on outdoor activities or include local restaurants. If you're unsatisfied with the activities planned on any particular day, you can give instructions and ask Layla to regenerate that part only.

Once you've perfected your itinerary, you can share it with your friends via a URL or add it to your bucket list.

2. Wonderplan

Wonderplan is a wonderful AI tool for planning your trip. To create your itinerary, Wonderplan first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests.

It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

5. Curiosio

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get into a car and drive. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap. Through this dataset, it can chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip with starting and finishing points. If there are any places you want to visit on the way, add them in. Then set the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and whether you want to visit places that spark curiosity or are obscure. The AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. There are easy ways to share your itinerary with co-travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best road trip planners for your next adventure .

6. Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI plans a perfect trip to your dream destination. Begin creating your itinerary by entering the city you wish to visit and traveling dates. You can add multiple destinations here.

Then, select the kinds of activities you prefer, the number of people, and whether you're traveling with friends or family. Trip Planner AI asks you about your dietary preferences and budget.

As an optional step, you can specify the place where you'll be staying so that it creates an itinerary accordingly. If you haven't decided on your lodging yet, you can explore hotels suggested by Trip Planner AI.

Finally, Trip Planner AI generates a detailed itinerary, a map, and basic information about the city you're visiting. For each destination, it provides the details of the place, expected traveling time, and cost. Though it provides a complete plan for your trip, you can manually add or remove activities from your itinerary. You can also invite your friends to edit the itinerary and download it as a PDF.

7. Vacay Chatbot

Vacay Chatbot is not a dedicated itinerary maker but an AI chatbot that acts like your travel advisor. So, you can ask it to give travel recommendations, compare different destinations, and, of course, create an itinerary. If you've previously used AI chatbots like ChatGPT, you'll find this trip planner easy to use.

Just enter a prompt specifying your destination and trip details and ask Vacay Chatbot to create an itinerary. You can include details like your trip duration, budget, preferences, number of travelers, etc. The more details you provide, the better your itinerary will be.

One of the downsides of using Vacay Chatbot is that it doesn't provide a map for your trip. However, you can use these apps to plot your itinerary on a map .

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. This is because they currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

A real human travel agent will still give you a more customized itinerary, but it will cost you a few bucks. If you want a free base guide, more basic travel planning apps are a good starting point.

These 2 Apps Make It Easy to Stream Almost Any Show or Movie With Friends

You can watch shows together from across the country or from across the room on your phones.

  • Apple software beta tester, "Helps make our computers and phones work!" - Zach's grandparents

Discovery Plus, Hulu, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Netflix streaming service apps on phones

Streaming is the most popular way to watch TV shows, accounting for about 38% of all TV usage, according to Nielsen . Streaming watch parties makes it possible to enjoy a show with a friend who lives miles away, or your partner while they're on a business trip. Some services, like Disney Plus and Amazon Prime Video , used to allow people to host watch parties right from the service, but those methods are no longer available. We'll walk you through two methods that allow you to host watch parties on those services and many more.

CNET Tech Tips logo

It's important to note that both of these methods require you and your watch party to have access to the same streaming services. Simply put, everyone needs access to a Netflix account or these won't work -- and that goes for other streaming services. It is possible to use shared accounts if you or someone else pays for them. Both of these methods also require you and your friends and family to use the same method to work.

Here's what you should know about these methods and how you can host watch parties with others from miles apart.

A Teleparty window on Disney Plus. The movie playing is Toy Story 4

You can use Teleparty with Disney Plus, Netflix and many other streaming services.

Teleparty , formerly known as Netflix Party, is a browser extension that works on Google Chrome , Microsoft Edge and Opera browsers . It also has an app for Android devices  currently in beta , and the company says it's working on iOS and Apple capabilities.

Teleparty lets you host a watch party for up to 1,000 other people and its free version enables you to host watch parties for streaming services like Netflix , Disney Plus , Hulu and more. It also has a premium version (which costs $6.59 a month or $47.88 annually ) that works with other services like Apple TV Plus , Crunchyroll and ESPN Plus .

Once you download the Teleparty extensions or apps from the links above, here's how to host a watch party.

1 . Open a video in one of the supported streaming services. 2 . Click the TP icon in the toolbar. 3 . Click Start the Party . 4 . A new page opens showing the video and a shareable link. Copy and send the link to your friends and family however you prefer.

To join the watch party, your invitees need to open the link, then click the TP icon in the toolbar and they'll be connected to the watch party. Teleparty also has a group chat feature, so people can share reactions to scenes or just chat as the show or movie is playing.

shareplay-devices.png

SharePlay lets you share your screen with other Apple devices so you and your friends can watch shows and movies together no matter where you are.

Apple introduced SharePlay in 2021 with iOS 15 and MacOS Monterey , and the feature lets Apple users share their screen with other people via FaceTime for watch parties. You could even use this method to stream something across two or more iPhones if no one in your friend group has a larger screen and you all don't want to be huddled around a single phone.

SharePlay works with all of Apple's own apps, like Apple TV and even Apple Music for listening parties. SharePlay also works with other streaming services , like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus. Some services like YouTube require you to upgrade to their premium membership to work with SharePlay, and Netflix doesn't work on SharePlay at all.

For SharePlay to work, everyone in the watch party needs to have iOS 15.1 or later installed on their device.

Here's how to use SharePlay to watch streaming services together.

1 . Start a FaceTime call. 2 . Tap the icon in the top-right corner of your screen that says Share and looks like a person standing in front of a screen. 3 . In the new menu, tap Share My Screen . 4 . Without ending the FaceTime call, go back to your home screen. 5. Open one of the supported streaming services and start watching.

While the show is playing, you can still talk to your friends and family like a regular FaceTime call. If you're watching a horror movie, you can collectively yell at the teenagers for splitting up in the dark forest.

How to Use the Tesla Trip Planner

Tesla’s Trip Planner can be used on a computer to plan a road trip ahead of time, with the advantage of finding food, lodging, and other stops near chargers. It can also be used on the go to adjust plans. Here’s what you should know.

Tesla supercharger map - Trip Planner

Telsa Motors, Inc.

What Is Tesla’s Trip Planner?

Tesla’s trip planning tools can be used both before you embark on your trip, as well as when you’re already on the road. Though specific features vary by manufacturer, all electric vehicles have ways to help the owner locate chargers on the go, see chargers’ status, and plan routes to destinations to balance optimizing the car’s range while finding the most convenient available chargers. In that way, Tesla’s trip planning tools are not unique to Tesla vehicles .

Key Takeaways

  • With computer-based and in-car features, Tesla’s Trip Planner can be used well in advance or on the go
  • The trip planner helps find the most efficient route to your destination
  • Tesla’s tools also help you find chargers along your route.

However, Tesla does have the advantage of being an early innovator in the segment, as well as having access to the formerly proprietary Tesla Supercharger network, widely regarded as the best of its kind in terms of reliability and efficiency.

An EV Road Trip

Warren Clarke Sept. 28, 2023

Charging of an electric car

Tesla’s Trip Planner can be used on a computer to plan a road trip ahead of time, with the advantage of finding food, lodging, and other desired stops near chargers. It can also be used on the go, to adjust plans if needed or desired. Here’s what you need to know.

Get Ready to Go

Use Tesla’s Trip Planner Go Anywhere tool from the comfort of your home, at any or all stages of planning your trip . Whether it’s an overnight or a cross-country jaunt, the Trip Planner can optimize your route, find and recommend Tesla Superchargers, and even suggest Destination Charging . The latter are charging locations specifically located near points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and shopping, so you can charge overnight, while eating, or while restocking your road trip supplies and provisions.

Using the Trip Planner ahead of time means you can ensure you’ll hit your desired points of interest and know where you’ll be spending the night, so you can head out confidently. Yet, if your plans change along the way, Tesla’s got you covered there, too.

On the Road

Whether you’ve planned in advance or it’s more of a last-minute or short trip, Tesla’s Trip Planner is also available behind the wheel. If you’re already in your car, your Tesla’s navigation system will show you the fastest route to your destination, and will highlight Tesla Superchargers along the way. This strategy can help you plan your charging to take advantage of nearby sites so you can explore, rest, or grab something to eat.

How Much Does it Cost to Charge an Electric Car?

Warren Clarke Jan. 16, 2024

Paying at an EV charging station

The lightning bolt icon on your Tesla’s navigation screen will instantly find the nearest Supercharger to your location, along with its current availability and charging rates . Tesla advises using the trip planner during a trip to stay informed of nearby Tesla Superchargers and your car’s recommendations for charging.

Other Tips and Advice

Tesla offers advice to optimize your charging and range while on a trip. When driving, make sure braking is set to the regenerative setting, which means that the car will recapture energy from braking and send it back to the battery pack, which helps maximize range. Also check your tires and ensure they’re set to the proper pressure, which also helps conserve battery power and reduce how often you’ll need to charge.

Whenever possible, park in the shade to keep the vehicle as cool as possible, and leave the air conditioning running while parked. This way, you can come back to a cool and comfortable vehicle. You can monitor and adjust the car’s cabin temperature remotely through Tesla’s smartphone app.

Note that Tesla advises leaving your vehicle plugged in whenever possible when you’re on a trip. Tesla says this will not degrade the battery or battery life over time.

Planning ahead of time will help ensure peace of mind for an extended road trip, but a combined approach of using Tesla’s trip planner tools both beforehand and on the go can help ensure you’re well prepared for your journey with room for some spontaneity and last-minute surprises. After all, what’s a road trip without the opportunity for a little adventure?
