Messi’s Argentina likely to visit Bangladesh in June

A press conference has been called Wednesday to inform the details of the much anticipated tour of the world champions

Argentina football team, led by Lionel Messi, are likely to tour Bangladesh in June to play a Fifa friendly match, Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin told the media Tuesday.

The Latin American country won the Qatar World Cup 2022 during which the craze for Messi and Co among Bangladesh fans made headlines in global media.

During the World Cup, talks on bringing the champions to Bangladesh started gaining momentum as the BFF also made its own effort after the tournament, which is finally seeing the light.

“The proposed tour of Argentina in Bangladesh is almost finalized. Now the discussion is only on terms and conditions,” BFF chief Salahuddin told Prothom Alo.

“They informed us that they want to come during Fifa window in June. If everything goes fine with terms and conditions, we can say they will come.” he added.

The venue will be Bangabandhu National Stadium where renovation work has been going on.

Salahuddin said the National Sports Council agreed to finish the remaining work by June.

He also said the opponents will be decided after Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni proposed some names upon which they will start work.

A press conference has been called Wednesday to inform the details of the much anticipated tour of the world champions.

Last time when Argentina team came to Bangladesh, they played a friendly against Nigeria at the fully-packed BNS on September 6, 2011.

The National Sports Council has already agreed to carry out necessary renovation work there, he added.

However, it is yet to be decided which team will play with Argentina.

"Argentina will provide us with a list of countries after talking with their coach and we will pick one," the BFF president said.

The visit by the Argentina soccer team is almost finalized. A talk on terms and conditions is in progress, he added.

Lionel Messi reigned supreme in Qatar last year as Argentina claimed glory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, defeating France in the final.

Earlier on 6 September, 2011, Argentina defeated Nigeria by 3-1 in Bangladesh.

This will be La Albiceleste's second visit to the South-Asian country.

Reigning FIFA World Cup champions Argentina are set to play a friendly match in Bangladesh in June 2023. BFF (Bangladesh Football Federation) President Kazi Salahuddin (who is also the President of SAFF) addressed the media on 17 January (Tuesday) and said, “ Argentina said they would like to visit Bangladesh during the FIFA window in June 2023 and regarding the tournament venue, the match will be held at Bangabandhu Stadium in the capital (Dhaka).”

The president further added, "Argentina will provide us with a list of countries after talking with their coach and we will pick one. The visit by the Argentina soccer team is almost finalized. A talk on terms and conditions is in progress."

FIFA's executive committee member Mahfuza Akter Kiron, also the women's wing chairman of BFF, informed the Daily Star that they are in talks with teams such as Morocco and Japan to play against the world champions.

Argentina's fan craze in Bangladesh

Argentina won the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar defeating France and received massive support from all around the world, with the most prominent being Bangladeshi supporters. Argentina have been enjoying fandom in the subcontinent (India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) since Diego Maradona won a televised World Cup in 1986. Santiago Cafiero, Argentina’s foreign minister, tweeted that his country will push to reopen its embassy in Bangladesh, which has been closed since 1978.

In India, Kerala and West Bengal are two states which support both Brazil and Argentina in large numbers with the fans having celebrated international football’s greatest event for years. Cut-outs of players were on display across both states, along with fluttering flags and banners. Argentina and Brazil have always garnered huge support here, courtesy the exploits of legendary players such as Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Diego Maradona, Messi and Neymar.

If everything goes according to plan, then this will be Argentina’s second visit to Bangladesh, with their first visit taking place in September 2011, where they defeated Nigeria 3-1 in a friendly at the same ground.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Soccer fan Gazi Jahidul Haque was struggling to hide his concern before the Argentina and Croatia World Cup semifinal at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium.

Haque was watching the game in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

“This World Cup is not only important for Argentina, but also for Messi,” 35-year-old lawyer Haque said before the game, his voice barely audible as thousands behind him thronged to watch the match in front of a giant television screen at the University of Dhaka in the capital’s center.

It was midnight Wednesday in Dhaka and by the time the final whistle blew with Argentina beating Croatia 3-0 , Haque’s worries had long dissipated. Argentina was in the World Cup final, one win away from capturing the game’s greatest prize.

The win meant Haque would get to see Messi — a player widely regarded as one of the game’s best – one more time at the World Cup. The celebrations began.

Fans poured onto the streets in Dhaka waving Argentina flags and wearing the team’s sky blue and white jersey. Amid blaring trumpets, they chanted Messi’s name and hugged each other. Some held motorbike rallies. Others broke into song and dance. A young man rode on a rikshaw, his body painted in Argentinian colors.

Argentina’s win was also celebrated in neighboring India, where it is cricket that is typically worshipped with near-religious fervor.

In Kolkata city, where children are also named after football players from previous generations, Argentina fans marched in streets chanting songs for Messi’s team. It’s a city where murals of Messi adorn the walls and Argentinian flags peek out of balconies with homes advertising their support.

Argentina has a legion of passionate super fans in Bangladesh and India since the days of Maradona, one of the greatest to play the game and an icon to fans around the world. Already, thousands of them have traveled to Qatar to see Messi and his team play.

Seeing its team getting massive support from the south Asian country, Argentina’s soccer federation earlier this month praised Bangladeshis on social media.

“Thank you for supporting our team. You are as crazy as we are!” the federation said in a Twitter post with photos showing Bangladeshi fans wearing Argentina’s jersey.

Those who aren’t in Qatar are displaying their allegiance by following the games with utmost devotion at home.

In southern Kerala’s coastal towns and villages, where flags of Argentina and Brazil are strung across shops, buildings and flagpoles, people have erected huge foam-board cutouts of their favorite players. Messi — and Brazil’s Neymar — are the favorites. In villages, open spaces have been used for match screenings, with thousands flocking to watch the games on giant screens.

On Sunday, Argentina will meet with either France or Morocco in the final. The fervor would reach its peak in India, and Aditya Shriram is waiting for a fairytale swan song for Messi.

Shriram, a 33-year-old digital marketer in New Delhi, has been supporting Argentina since the 1998 World Cup. On Sunday, he will be watching the final with a group of nearly two dozen friends he grew up with playing soccer in the Indian capital.

Shriram said Sunday’s game will have Messi play to seal his legacy, considering the greatest of all time — Pele and Maradona — have both won the World Cup, an accolade that had so far evaded the Argentinian superstar.

“It’ll complete him,” Shriram said. “Unless you win the World Cup, you can’t be counted among the absolute greatest of all time.”

Bangladesh gearing up to support Argentina in World Cup final

Millions of people in the South Asian country support Argentina, which will take on France in Sunday’s championship game in Qatar.

Argentina's fans in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Adnan Imam, a resident of Dhaka, is an ardent fan of Argentina’s football team. As he prepares to watch Sunday’s World Cup final between Argentina and France, he has resorted to superstition to help his team win.

The 26-year-old software engineer is usually a sceptic and doesn’t believe in any divine intervention or luck, but he said the jersey he wore for Argentina’s first match brought bad luck.

Argentina’s messi confirms qatar final his last world cup: media, how muchachos became argentina’s unofficial world cup anthem, argentina fans protest lack of tickets for world cup final.

“Argentina lost against the Saudis,” Imam told Al Jazeera. “Since then, I have switched to an old jersey, and they are on a winning streak.”

Rohan Ahmed, meanwhile, arranged a special prayer on Friday for Argentina’s victory at a local shrine in the port city of Chattagram. Dozens of other Argentina fans joined him.

“I would slaughter two cows and throw a ‘Mezban’ [a traditional Chattagram feast] if Argentina wins the World Cup,” Ahmed, 39, a shipping agent, told Al Jazeera.

Ahmed’s and Imam’s fervour for La Albiceleste, as the Argentine football team is known, defies logic. Their country is thousands of kilometres away from Argentina, and the economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries are weak.

However, football transcends borders, and perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in this South Asian country, where a large chunk of its 170 million people become de facto Argentines every four years. They wear light blue and white jerseys and support the team and its players with the same zeal as Argentines.

Global recognition

Bangladesh’s love for Argentina’s football team is at least four decades old, but this year, it grabbed the attention of the world like never before – from FIFA tweeting a clip of thousands of Bangladeshis celebrating Argentina’s goal against Mexico to global football star Gary Lineker expressing surprise at such fandom.

Argentinians also took notice of the devotion for their football team in a faraway land and decided to return the favour. They opened a Facebook group for Argentina fans of Bangladesh’s cricket team and started watching the sport, in which Bangladesh is considered an emerging powerhouse. Within two weeks, the group attracted nearly 200,000 members.

In another surprising gesture, Santiago Cafiero, Argentina’s foreign minister, tweeted that his country will push to reopen  its embassy in Bangladesh, which has been closed since 1978.

“It feels great that Argentine people now know how crazy we are about Messi and their football team,” Sifat Mehedi, one of the moderators of the Facebook group , told Al Jazeera.

There are dozens of Facebook groups in Bangladesh, but this one is the largest with more than a half-million members.

“Yes, we rank 192 in the FIFA rankings, but our people are some of the most passionate football fans,” Mehedi said. “I would say quadrennial fans, though, as this whole football frenzy is centered on the World Cup.”

Mehedi said social media has played a big part in putting Bangladesh on the football fandom map.

“These days, any post or video can go viral,” he said. “You never know. I don’t think Bangladesh would have gotten the attention of Argentina or the whole world if FIFA didn’t share that video – at least of this scale.”

“After all, Bangladeshis have been supporting Argentina since the Maradona magic in 1986,” Mehedi said.

Football legends Diego Maradona of Argentina and Pele of Brazil are household names in South Asian countries such as Bangladesh. Expatriates from the region, who form a large chunk of Qatar’s population, have rallied behind Latin American countries, mainly Brazil and Argentina, in the current World Cup.

Football’s history in the Bengali-speaking region of the Indian subcontinent goes back to the late 19th century when its British colonial rulers introduced the sport in Calcutta, then the capital of British India and now Kolkata, Bengal state’s main city.

The eastern part of Bengal became part of Pakistan in 1947 when the Indian subcontinent achieved independence from Britain. But nearly three decades later, East Pakistan, as it was known then, seceded to become Bangladesh.

Mahmud Hossain Opu

The ‘M factor’

Football’s popularity rose in Bangladesh in the mid-1980s after televisions became widely available, and the first World Cup that most Bangladeshis watched was the one in 1986, journalist Syed Faiz Ahmed said.

“The 1986 World Cup also saw the emergence of a superhero – Diego Maradona,” Ahmed said. “People have been searching for such a football deity, and the Argentine maestro fulfilled it with his exquisite style, revolutionary air and tremendous passion.”

He said Bangladeshis’ love for Maradona and Argentina continued even though the Albicelestes haven’t won another World Cup since then.

Bangladeshis’ support for Argentina has risen to a new level since the arrival of Lionel Messi, Ahmed said

Sports commentator Shahnoor Rabbani told Al Jazeera that their love for Messi even supersedes that for Maradona.

“This is because people now can follow and watch European club football all through the year and even the personal life of stars like Messi through social media,” he said.

“You cannot but fall in love with Messi if you love football,” Rabbani said. “He is arguably the greatest player of all time, and he not having a World Cup is a loss for football.”

Argentina WC winner Martinez confirms Bangladesh tour

argentina tour bangladesh

Argentina’s World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on Monday confirmed on Facebook that he will be visiting Bangladesh in July.

Martinez wrote, “Hello Everybody, I will be doing my maiden trip to Indian subcontinent from 3rd July to 5th July and will participate in many charitable activities including visiting as a chief guest for a charity football match at Mohunbagan club, many fan engagement programs, sponsors felicitation and promote the beautiful game. I know Kolkata and Bangladesh has huge Argentina fans and I am very excited to meet them. Thank you Satadru for this initiative! Ami tomaderbhalobhashi!”

The news of Martinez’s trip to Dhaka was on the news in Bangladeshon 21 May. Martinez was approached by Indian sports promoter Satadru Dutta, who told agencies that he had initially approached Martinez for a trip to Kolkata.

The Argentinian goalkeeper then told him that he also wanted to visit Bangladesh. After that, Satadru started contacting potential sponsors in Bangladesh.

‘You can’t be watching football till three’ – the curious downside of Bangladesh’s Argentina fandom

Argentina football fans in Bangladesh

As both Argentina and Bangladesh brace themselves for their respective clashes, the mutual affection between their fans continues to scale near-unprecedented levels.

Over the years, Bangladeshi football fans have been steadfast in their support for the Argentina football side. The fandom has transcended generations, as they spent nights staying up, cheering for Diego Maradona, then Claudio Caniggia and Gabriel Batistuta, and now Lionel Messi.

Social media ensured their love did not remain unrequited for long. The Argentinian media found out about the Bangladeshi fans, and the fans joined in. However, they chose to cheer for the Bangladesh cricket team: cricket, after all, is the most popular sport in Bangladesh.

bet365

We have already discussed the Argentinian reciprocation to Bangladeshi fandom in these pages . The Facebook group ‘ Fans argentinos de la selección de cricket de Bangladesh ‘ (Argentinian fans of the Bangladesh cricket team) has now expanded to over 180,000 fans, coinciding with Bangladesh’s ODI series win against India.

However, this comes with an obvious drawback. Argentina are set to play their 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final against Croatia on the night of December 13. The kick-off will be at one in the morning in Bangladesh – in other words, even if the match does not go in to extra time, the final whistle will go off at 3am.

This would not have affected the usual fans, who are used to this quadrennial routine. However, the Bangladesh cricketers are also fans… what if they chose to stay up to cheer for their favourite side? That would pose a problem, for they will play a Test match against India the next morning from half past nine.

“We have to go to bed, simple as that. You can’t be watching football till three in the morning, and play the Test that starts at 9.30 am. It is stupid. I’d be very disappointed if they did,” insisted Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo .

While one can understand Domingo’s sentiments, the mutual admiration between the two fanbases seems to increase with every passing day. On December 12, Pablo Molinari uploaded a cricket coaching manual on his popular YouTube channel. The video is in Spanish, and has Bengali subtitles – almost certainly a first in history.

Cricket in Argentina dates back to the early 19th century. The progress was halted once football became popular in the country, but that was less than a century ago. What if Bangladesh’s admiration somehow helps revive the interest towards cricket in the country, and in turn, cricket’s less explored territories?

Clem Gibson, the legendary Argentinian cricketer, was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1918. In 1921, he took 6-64 to dish out Warwick Armstrong’s Australians their first defeat on their tour of England. Gibson never played Test cricket because Argentina did not. A strong Argentina cricket team would have made Gibson happy.

Argentina and Bangladesh: two nations united by football

argentina tour bangladesh

The FIFA World Cup fever has gripped the world with excitement and Bangladesh is not an exception. The greatest show on earth brings our people together unlike anything else and creates a festive mood all over the country.

While people here support various teams on the occasion, most Bangladeshi fans are seen supporting either Brazil or Argentina. These two nations have made a special place in our hearts through their footballing success.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.

Bangladeshi Argentina fans, however, have managed to get the world's attention by showing their passion for Argentina during the World Cup this year. While many already knew about Argentina's massive fan base in Bangladesh, this may be the first time people all around the world took notice of it.

It all started after the official FIFA Twitter account shared a video of Bangladeshi fans wildly celebrating Messi's goal against Mexico in the World Cup group stage. The video quickly went viral and former England and Barcelona forward Gary Lineker even replied to the video saying, "Fantastic."

After the video went viral, the story of Bangladesh and Argentina snowballed into a trending topic on the internet. More pictures and videos of Bangladeshi people wearing Argentina jerseys, hoisting flags, going to rallies, and watching Argentina's match late at night started circulating on the internet.

As the topic started trending, Argentine media picked up on it as well. Various Journalists and Argentine news outlets started sharing the story. Later, Argentina's national football team's official Twitter account tweeted about Bangladesh saying, "Thank you for supporting our team!! They are crazy like us!"

Alongside media and journalists, the people of Argentina also took to social media to show their appreciation for Bangladesh. Argentinians were also seen with Bangladeshi flags and chanting "Bangladesh! Bangladesh!" in the stadium during their World Cup games.

Argentinians were mesmerised by the fact that people of a country they barely know, thousands of miles away in another continent, were just as passionate as them about Argentina's national football team.

Many of them started to ask why Bangladesh has such a massive support for the Argentina football team. When did they start supporting Argentina like this?

The origin of the craze Bangladesh has for Argentina or World Cup in general can be traced back to the eighties. With colour TV starting to become more available in the country, the World Cup was more accessible.

Then, during the 1986 World Cup, Bangladesh witnessed a magician by the name of Maradona, who stunned the world with his skills and led Argentina to their second World Cup victory.

It was love at first sight. Maradona and his team instantly made a place in the hearts of many Bangladeshi people with their sheer footballing brilliance. The support for Argentina here continued long after Maradona retired and later his legacy was carried on by another magician from Rosario.

The relationship between Bangladesh and Argentina is special. Two countries coming together in the name of football like this is rarely seen. The support Bangladesh has for Argentina will never fade away. Maybe this is what they mean by the "Power of Football".
