Learn about the art of the Tango in Buenos Aires

Dive into the culture of the country on our Argentina escorted tours, and learn about the Tango at a traditional milonga in Buenos Aires, the birthplace of Tango. You’ll also join a local family in Palermo Soho and enjoy a traditional homemade dinner, before watching the family perform the elegant Tango dance.

See the stunning Iguazu Falls

The Iguazu Falls are the largest waterfall system in the world, and a phenomenal feat of nature. They span both Argentina and Brazil and on the Argentinian side, we’ll take you on an eco-train through the jungle to see the cascading waters. We’ll also show you the crown jewel of Iguazu, the churning Devil’s Throat.

Take in epic mountain views in Bariloche

Known as the ‘Switzerland of South America’, Bariloche is Argentina’s mountainous outdoor playground. Set in the beautiful Nahuel Huapi National Park, you’ll be surrounded by towering mountains, dense forests, sunny beaches and glacial lakes. We’ll take you up the Campanario Hill chairlift for panoramic views of the peaks of Catedral and Tronador.

See penguins in Ushuaia

We’ll take you on a journey to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. It’s filled with massive glaciers, snow-capped mountains, dazzling lakes, tumbling waterfalls and incredible wildlife. Take a cruise across Ushuaia Bay to Martillo Island to spot colonies of the gorgeous Magellanic penguin, along with sea lions, steamer ducks and albatross.

Discover the magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier

Discover the Perito Moreno Glacier in the UNESCO-listed Los Glaciares National Park. It’s one of the largest glaciers in Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field, covering 259 square kilometers. You’ll see the glittering arctic blue of the glacier and even witness chunks of ice plunging into the milky waters below.

Our top 5 things to do in Argentina

Our Argentina travel packages show you the best of the country, from the mighty Iguazu Falls and the mountains of Bariloche, to the penguins of Ushuaia and the Patagonian glaciers.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

Housed in a beautiful old building, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes contains the largest collection of art in Latin America, dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The museum was originally built in Paris and moved to Buenos Aires in the early 1900s.

Set in a striking contemporary building, the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (MALBA) displays artwork from some of the most iconic Latin artists. Wander the halls to see works from Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García and Roberto Matto.

Francisco Moreno Museum of Patagonia

Located in Bariloche, the Francisco Moreno Museum of Patagonia showcases the natural and cultural history of Argentinian Patagonia. You’ll learn about the flora and fauna of these lands, as well as discovering the history of the region’s native people including the Mapuches, Tehuelches and Pehuenches.

Best museums in Argentina

Our Argentina group tours take you to the top museums in the country, from the largest art collection in Latin America to the history of Argentinian Patagonia.

Argentinian steak

From the grilled beef found in traditional asados (barbecues) in backyards and street corners, to the prime beef cuts found in steakhouses all over the country, the art of steak has been perfected in Argentina. Pair with fresh salad and red wine for a sumptuous Argentinian meal.

Malbec wine

There are nearly 30,000 vineyards in Argentina, and Malbec is one of the most-loved varieties. With its dark color and intense fruit flavor, Malbec is the classic red wine to pair with any dish, from pizza and pasta, to the traditional Argentinian asado.

Dulce de leche

Dulce de leche is one of the most delicious desserts in Argentina, made from slowly reduced condensed milk that has turned into a sweet thick caramel. You’ll want to stock up on a few jars of this treat to share back home.

Best food in Argentina

Join our escorted tours in Argentina and experience the tantalizing cuisine of the country, from world-class steak to the finest Malbec wines.

What to pack for Argentina

People packing for a tour

Formal wear

Although there is no written dress code, you may want to dress up for a tango show or a night at the Teatro Colón, one of the world’s best opera houses.

Wind and waterproof coat

Patagonia is famed for its chilly climate and strong winds, so you’ll need to pack a sturdy coat, scarf, hat and gloves to stay warm.

Versatile shoes

Argentina has a myriad of terrains and you’ll need shoes that can take you dancing across a tango hall, and hiking through rugged mountain trails.

Adaptor plug

In Argentina, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and I. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

The sun is extremely strong in Argentina, and you’ll need sunglasses (and sunscreen) to protect yourself, even in winter when the gleaming snow can be blinding.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Destination must-sees.

Argentina ms1

Buenos Aires:

The capital city of Argentina, birthplace of the tango, home to a mosaic of European-styled architecture and South American spirit, it’s nearly impossible not to fall head over heels, madly and deeply in love with this very special place. It’s often called the "Paris of Latin America" and lives up to its name with incredible food, fantastic shopping, stunning architecture and culture galore.

Argentina ms2

Tango Performance:

The Tango is arguably one of the greatest contributions Buenos Aires has made to world culture. The famous dance is said to have originated in the mid-1800s by the large influx of immigrants from Africa, Spain, Italy, England, Poland and Russia. Visitors can enjoy glitzy tango shows, but anyone inspired to perfect their moves can find a willing teacher in salons, cafes and at dance events.

Argentina ms4

A sliver of steep streets and jumbled buildings, this city lies between the Andes and the Southern Ocean. It is at the southernmost tip of South America, which gives it the nickname “the end of the world.” But this is no isolated spot that’s cut off from civilization! It’s a busy port filled with adventures like hiking, sailing, skiing, kayaking, and even scuba diving. Many tourists travel to “the end of the world” each year to enjoy its many treasures.

Destination Must-Dos

Argentina md1

Argentina meat from the Papas region:

Argentina has the second-highest consumption rate of beef and is the third-largest beef exporter in the world. There are millions of herds of cattle in Argentina, mostly kept in the fertile pastures of the pampas where they feed on grass and live under more natural conditions. Many Argentinians believe strongly that raising beef on natural grasslands is a sustainable tradition that produces healthier animals and more nutritious meat.

Argentina md2

Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and the fifth largest producer in the world. It’s best known for its versions of classic red wines like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. It is said that long ago, a catholic priest who came to these lands planted vineyards near their monasteries to ensure the provision of wine for the celebration of holy mass and the rest, as they say, is history.

Argentina md3

Perito Moreno Glacier:

Three miles wide and twenty stories high, this is the jewel of Argentina’s Patagonia, located in Los Glaciares National Park. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and it forms part of the Patagonian Continental Ice Field. It’s one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing. Visitors enjoy spotting floating icebergs from the shore and hearing the powerful sound of ice crashing into the water as they break from the glacier.

Argentina md4

Iguazu Falls:

This is a natural wonder of the world with over 270 falls in the area, plus many ways to view them from both the ground and by helicopter. A visit to Iguazu Falls (Iguazu means “Big Water” in Guarani Indian) will leave you in awe. Sitting on the border of Argentina and Brazil, this roaring, jaw-dropping machine provides you with a visceral experience you’ll never forget. It’s unlike any waterfall on earth and it attracts more than one million visitors a year who are forever transformed by its magnitude and splendor.

Expert Advice

PaulVieira

Buenos Aires architecture is divided into three styles: neoclassical, art nouveau and art deco. These architectural styles provide insight into when and who built the city’s stylish neighborhoods.

Argentina e2

Argentinian beef is world renowned. From having their own cuts of beef, grass feeding cattle in open pastures to implementing their “Asado” barbecuing technique that slightly smokes the beef. Meet lovers are sure to have a culinary experience to remember.

Argentina e3

Americans are always in a rush to get to their next destination, and often eat at a rushed pace. In Argentina they enjoy life at a much slower pace, so visitors can relax, slow down, and enjoy their meal and company.

Amazing Argentina and Peru! Our Travel Advisor planned a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Argentina and Peru for us. The activities she planned were totally awesome and the service we received was impeccable. Next time we come to South America we will call on Latin America for Less again because it took all of the hard planning out of our hands and we just had to enjoy the experience.

Lynn Snider - California, USA

It was so amazing! I loved the whole experience; the tour was fantastic with the boat tour and individual time to explore the boardwalks with different vistas of the glaciers, our guide was so friendly and informative, and the glacier was beautiful. I want to thank you for all of your planning, suggestions, your check-ins and your support! It meant the world to me and I greatly appreciate it.

Mark Janosky - New York, USA

We had a very good time in Argentina and would recommend it to anyone! The Perito Moreno Glacier Tour was incredible. While we were walking along the catwalk we were able to see and to hear the thundering sound of the glacier breaking off a number of times. The effect was awe inspiring - almost spiritual. Buenos Aires is such a beautiful city. I do not think that there is any city as beautiful on this earth.

Argentina Tours & Travel

Argentina Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Argentina shares southernmost South America -- and the remote region of Patagonia , a favorite of adventurous travelers -- with neighboring Chile. The remote Tierra del Fuego city of Ushuaia -- one of the world’s southernmost communities -- is a frequent embarkation point for ships to Antarctica and to local penguin colonies.

But Argentina is probably best known for its vibrant, European-like capital, Buenos Aires , in the northern part of the country. An irresistible combination of urban sophistication, rugged nature, scenic beauty, and engrossing history and culture makes Argentina a don’t-miss South American destination.

Conjuring up images of tango, steak, and good red wine, the beauty of Argentina is almost indescribable. All throughout the country you find elements of European influence, particularly in the Italian complexion of the majority of population. The architecture is reminiscent of continental Europe with flashes of Spanish, Italian and French influence and the history, while simultaneously beautiful and brutal, allows a glimpse into the heart of the country.

Why Visit Argentina on a Guided Tour?

Argentina is one of the final stretches on the Pan-American Highway, with its “city at the edge of the world,” Ushuaia, being the end. Traveling without a guide is possible, however going with a guide is an enriching experience - helping travelers to fully understand the cultural significance of Argentina's landmarks and dive deeper into its stunning landscapes.

Since your guides will often be an Argentinian local, they have not only an intimate understanding of the local languages but also their customs. This allows for smooth transitions between lodging accommodations in urban and rural settings. It also gives travelers a way to find the popular, less well-known with travelers locations for nightlife or other activities, as the guides have experience with what is available and when.

While on the tour, guides are able to answer questions about the historical significance of various sites, providing a unqiue local perspective . Since Argentina is such a large country, having a guide that knows how to manage transportation in invaluable, as this minimizes travel times through the use of the most efficient or picturesque routes.

A guided tour also serves to provide travelers with interactions with other international guests in their group. This allows for cultural exchanges and the ability to make friends for other fun travel activites in Argentina. You may find that you meet a hiking companion for the more remote parts of Argentina, such as the self-guided hiking trails near El Chalten.

In this way, travelers are able to maximize their cultural interactions while also remaining informed and organized throughout their exploration of Argentina within a guided tour group.

Top Cities in Argentina

1. Buenos Aires

Perched on the Pacific coastline, Buenos Aires lives up to its reputation as one of the most relaxed capitals in the Americas. Whether travelers to the city wish to explore the president of Argentina’s office building, “La Casa Rosada,” or take tango lessons, Buenos Aires caters to travelers of all ages .

As a major city, it has bus routes which travelers can utilize to access different sections of it, but it is also very bike-friendly . Since it is very flat, travelers who tour the city by bike may find it easier to navigate through traffic congestion, which is highly prevalent at rush-hour times.

Similarly, Buenos Aires is well-known for its lively hostels that are matched by homestay options or major hotel chains. Both the Hilton and Four Seasons have locations in the heart of the capital, along with other comparably luxurious Argentinian hotel chains.

Buenos Aires’ economy utilizes the Argentinian peso and is often considered to be just as expensive as London or other major Western cities. So visiting Argentina on a guided tour is a great way to save - as meals are often included within the trip package, and venture beyond the tourist strips.

From an entertainment perspective, Buenos Aires offers travelers the opportunity to see futból matches at La Bombonera stadium, art in museums and cemeteries, as well as a 67-meter high obelisk (El Obelisco). Travelers are encouraged to spend multiple days in Buenos Aires to fully experience all of the various cultural and historical aspects that make the city one of the most popular to visit in South America.

Travelers do not have to be wine connoisseurs to enjoy the product that makes Mendoza, Argentina, such a unique city. Situated in the Cuyo region , Mendoza, it is known internationally as the birthplace of Malbec wines . This particular type of red wine, along with others, are made possible by the specific altitude and desert climate that the grapes in the city are grown in.

Guided tours of the wineries (known locally as “bodegas”) are numerous. Since there is no public transportation in the city, many wineries also provide lodging or transportation, depending on the tour package. The Vendimia Festival , celebrating the harvest of the grapes in late February or early March is the most popular time to visit Mendoza, making it crucial to plan your Argentina tour in advance.

For those wishing to relax further than traversing the beautiful city vineyards, Mendoza is also known for its restaurants and spas , both of which may be included with tours or include discounts from hotels. The city itself is centered around the Plaza Independencia, which is worth taking a walking tour of to understand its historical significance.

To deepen your knowledge of one of Argentina’s most popular cities and its inhabitants, travelers can tour the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno. While the art is primarily that of South American artists, it is still interesting to visit given its subterranean location. The perfect merging of nature with the urban architecture of the city will make leaving difficult, especially without a bottle of Malbec or a massage.

Famously known as the “End of the World,” Ushuaia is the largest city in the Tierra del Fuego region of Argentina. It is also the last stop on the Pan-American Highway and the gateway to  tours of Antarctica from Argentina. It is situated between the Andes Mountains, specifically the Martial Mountains, and the Beagle Strait, which separates South America from Antarctica.

For those looking to traverse the city by train, the Southern Fuegian Railroad provides a great overview of it along with the surrounding natural features that may be hiked to. Dogsledding is another method of travel for those who arrive in the winter, as the nearby ski locations are considered to be some of the best in the world.

North from the city, just a short train or drive away, is the famous Tierra del Fuego National Park , which is home to many lakes and mountains that stretch between Chile and Argentina. For those looking to see the elusive guanaco, Andean condor, or flora of all kinds, a day trip to the park from Ushuaia is a great option, and commonly included as an excursion on Argentina tours.

These adventure tours in Argentina provide not just transportation, but also knowledge on where to see the widest variety of biodiversity that comes from experience in the park. Travelers should be aware that while the city is inexpensive to stay in, it is cold year-round . This requires layers of clothing to be packed, along with dry-bags, to alleviate the need to miss tour activities on account of a lack of protection or sickness.

Getting to Patagonia from Argentina

The amount of time that a traveler has in Argentina is the most significant factor when it comes to deciding the method of transportation that will lead to Patagonia . While Argentina and Chile have their respectively popular travel destinations in this shared region, it is no simple matter to get from one to the other.

Travelers must cross both sides of Patagonia if they wish to see all that it has to offer. That being said, most guided tours of Patagonia from Argentina begin in the capital of Buenos Aires. International travelers can decide to board a cruise ship, fly, drive, or take busses.

The fastest method of travel is flying, a largely inexpensive option that has its first legs in either Santiago, Chile, or Ushuaia, Argentina, depending on which end of Patagonia travelers wish to begin with.

From there, travelers can fly to Punta Arenas , further north to Puerto Natales , and finally reach the famous Torres del Paine National Park . This is one of the most famous sites in the Chilean part of Patagonia and is conveniently located just a drive or bus ride away from Argentina’s El Calafate.

This small town is closed during the winter season but is the only gateway to Lago Argentino, El Chalten Glacier, and Mount Fitz Roy. Further north from these landmark sites is Los Glaciares National Park and the unmistakable Perito Moreno Glacier, all of which are accessible by car or bus.

For those feeling exceptionally adventurous, the Pan-American Highway spans the distance from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina. This option, while time-consuming, still allows travelers to arrange guided tours of both Argentina and Chile’s sides of Patagonia.

The Natural Wonders of Argentine Patagonia

Many travelers who make their way to Argentina are on their way to Patagonia - where stunning natural landscapes, wildlife, and challenging hikes beckon true outdoors enthusiasts. Patagonia is a region covering parts of both Chile and Argentina, however the Argentina side is quite a bit larger and easier to visit.

It is possible of course to visit Patagonia without camping or taking strenuous hikes, so don’t despair if this isn’t your cup of tea. Many Argentina tours will feature a visit to some of Patagonia’s more accessible sights on the itinerary.

Some of the top Patagonia sights you’ll see in Argentina include:

1. El Calafate - This unique setting is a top Patagonia attraction, primarily as the jumping off point to visit Los Glaciares National Park. If Patagonia has been on your bucket list, you’ve undoubtedly seen images of Perito Moreno Glacier, with its bright blue icey walls against a rugged and rocky backdrop. This is a top site to visit in Argentina!

2. Valdés Peninsula - An UNESCO World Heritage sight and home to a wildlife preserve that helps protect enormous colonies of Magellanic penguins, whales, elephant seals, and many other species, the Valdes Peninsula is an essential stop in Argentina for wildlife lovers.

3. Puerto San Julian - History lovers will delight in this excursion, the site of Ferdinand Magellan’s landing, the explorer to whom credit for naming Patagonia goes. There’s not much else in the area other than historical themed boat rides and a museum, so this really is one for the history buffs.

4. The Dinosaur Route - If you love paleontology or are traveling with young kids who are fascinated by dinosaurs, the Dinosaur Route is a definite must when visiting Patagonia in Argentina. Several important fossils have been discovered in the area (there is even a species that’s been named Argentinosaurus). The Dinosaur route is a great way to get up close to these discovery areas and learn about ongoing digs in the region.

Food in Argentina

When you’re traveling in Argentina, expect a unique cuisine, with many flavor influences from around the world. Argentina cuisine is fairly meat heavy, so vegetarians may have a bit of trouble in restaurants and homestays. Meals are also fairly large and hearty - if you don’t usually eat a lot, definitely try convincing someone to split with you!

Wine is also big in Argentina, and several Argentina tours are now featuring winery visits and tastings on their itineraries. Some of the best varietals to try in Argentina are Malbec and Cabernet Franc.

Some of the top foods to try in Argentina include:

1. Asados (barbeque) - Barbeque is a cooking process utilized all around the world, each country with it’s only unique style, flavors, and sides. In Argentina, barbeque is a full event enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Common meats you’ll find at an Argentina barbeque include Chorizo, ribeye, and sirloin.

2. Empanadas - Another popular food item that has its unique flair depending on the country, Empanadas are the perfect finger food for tourists on the go, or locals doing their market shopping. Traditional ingredients include potato, boiled eggs, scallions, and of course, meat - wrapped in a delicious dough.

3. Alfajores - If you have a sweet-tooth, you will love some of the desert items found in Argentina, especially Alfajores. The flavor of “dulce-de-leche” is everywhere in South America, and these treats are also common in Chile, Peru, and Ecuador. They are a small sweet cookie, with dulce de leche filling and sometimes dipped in chocolate and / or shaved coconut.

4. Milanesa - Fans of traditional European “Milanese” or “Schnitzel” will recognize immediate similarities in this popular Argentine lunch or dinner item. Meat (chicken or veal typically) is pounded thin and served with a tomato based sauce.

Wine-tasting in Argentina

Argentina is home to some of the world’s more unique grape varietals, which have captured the attention of wine lovers everywhere . These include Torrontes and Malbec, which thrive in Argentina's   extremely particular grape-growing conditions.

While Malbec wines have also been produced in some parts of Chile and the United States , Torrontés wines are limited to Argentina wineries. This makes securing a wine tour in Argentina's wine country, around Salta very difficult if it is not done ahead of time with a guided tour.

Since Salta rises from 5,000 feet above sea level to 9,000 feet in a desert climate, replicating these conditions elsewhere to create Torrontés wines is nearly impossible. Fortunately, there are around 4,500 acres of vineyards along the famous Ruta de Vino (Wine Route) for travelers in Argentina to explore.

Many of the bodegas (wineries) that Argentina tours stop at not only offer tours of the property, but also cooking classes that prepare meals to pair with the rare wines that are sampled. For those looking to remain closer to Buenos Aires, Mendoza is a city that is similarly famous for its surrounding wineries that have historically specialized in the crafting of Malbec wine.

While this type of wine is still a staple for the region, the biodynamic wineries that continue to expand in the region are exploring various other red-wine blends. Therefore, travelers to wineries in Argentina are afforded the unique experience of being at the frontier of the wine industry, all from the comfort of a spa or a gorgeous view of the mountainous arid landscape.

Wine specialists are also available on guided tours of wineries in Mendoza to facilitate the sampling process and share the rich evolution of the Malbec wine into its various other forms which continue to appeal to international travelers.

Adventure Travel in Argentina

Given how Argentina’s landscape ranges from lowlands to Andean mountain peaks and back down to deserts and glaciers, adventure travel can take on many forms. The most popular adventure travel in Argentina tends to take place inside its many national parks.

Mount Fitz Roy (El Chaltén)

Part of Los Glaciares National Park , Mount Fitz Roy (locally called El Chaltén) is 3,405 meters high, with around 4,000 meters of vertical elevation. It is a veritable climbers paradise, one that requires both the proper gear, physical preparation, and guided tour to follow. The best time to visit is during the months of October to March.

It is recommended that adventurous travelers who wish to hike Mount Fitz Roy plan their trip at least six months in advance. Guided tours to Mount Fitz Roy book flights in advance, alleviating the need for travelers to concern themselves with transportation matters.

Travelers must begin their journey in El Calafate , a small town that only has 20 permanent residents and stands as the gateway to the mountain. Since traveling on a guided tour is the most popular option when climbing the mountain, campsites are established along the way, including at the famous Lago de Los Tres. Travelers can expect to be on the trail for at least 2 days, depending on how quickly their group moves and where they stop.

Perito Moreno Glacier

While the Perito Moreno Glacier is also in Argentina’s Patagonia , it is a much less strenuous site to reach than Mount Fitz Roy. It is peculiar for being one of the only glaciers worldwide to still be advancing. However, this does not mean that travelers will see it standing still, as it is typical for the glacier to “calve.” This process leads to the collapse of entire ice-bridges, shedding building-sized debris into the surrounding water of Argentino Lake.

For travelers in guided boat tours by boat, this makes for an exhilarating experience that not only can be heard but also seen and felt. As the glacier shifts, the immense amounts of ice that fall into the water below may shake or even spray those travelers who are in nearby boats.

There are also catwalks and hiking trails that ring the land around the lake that provides for stunning views of the bright-blue glacier against the water. Words are not sufficient for describing its beauty.

Quebrada de Humahuaca

On the other end of the spectrum is  Quebrada de Humahuaca, a narrow swatch of color through the desert of Jujuy. The arid landscape provides the perfect setting for crisp photos of the “Seven-color Gradient” that the 96-mile valley is most known for. By securing guided tours on horseback or by foot, travelers can access Quechuan villages that still adhere to centuries-old traditions and ways of farming.

At an average height of 11,500 feet above sea-level, those who are unprepared for or have not adjusted to the altitude will have a difficult time. The best time to travel to Quebrada de Humahuaca is December through February, during the summer. Even though this time is usually the most popular, with so much room to explore, it will be difficult for travelers to not feel like the adventure they have is unlike anyone else’s.

Cultural Attractions in Argentina

As a mecca for many of the world’s creatively inclined people, Argentina has endured or been at the forefront of various artistic movements throughout history. The famous contributions which artists have made are commemorated across the country in different cultural attractions in Argentina.

The art museums, cemeteries, and government buildings which represent Argentina’s culture are constantly updated and require the respect of international travelers who visit. In the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, travelers can find guided tours that provide insight into Latina American art made during the 20th century and onward.

The cultural center within the MALBA hosts films and art exhibits, all of which are available for visitors to interact with. The theatre is only open on Wednesdays and the entire museum is closed on Tuesdays, both of which are important to consider when planning a visit. For those with disabilities and children under 5, admission is free. All other patrons must pay $200 dollars for entrance, with the exception of $100 tickets being available to students, teachers, and seniors.

In comparison, the Museo de Alta Arqueologia de Alta Montaña in Salta focuses primarily on the Incan culture.  This museum studies a relatively new field of archeology, yet is still a part of many guided tours in Salta. Not only is this because of the many Incan artifacts and art that have been preserved in MAAM, but also for the “Children of Llullaillaco” that are on exhibit.

These three famous mummies are some of the best-preserved ones that have been discovered to date and are a breath-taking glimpse into Argentina’s far distant past. Admission is 30 pesos, per person and the MAAM is not open on Mondays. Travelers who have extra time to explore cultural attractions will likely find themselves at Parque 3 de Febrero.

Also known as “Los bosques de Palermo,” guided tours of the park will take travelers on boat rides in the lake or through its famous rose garden. The garden is home to 8,000 roses of 93 different species, all of which travelers can view every day of the week except for Monday.

Learning Tango in Argentina

As the international hub of tango, Buenos Aires comes alive during the night with the colorful dancers and lively music that the genre of art is so popular for. Unfortunately, travelers in Argentina are unlikely to find tango elsewhere in the country, as it is centered within the capital city.

Therefore, it is imperative to visit what is known locally as “ milongas ,” while in Buenos Aires, as these tango dance-halls are prolific in the city and frequented by both Argentinians and international travelers. Most milongas offer different classes for different experience levels that dancers may have, including those who are brand new to tango.

This means that travelers should not be afraid to try learning it, as many of the classes are free before a certain time of night or during the day. Tour guides or locals can be consulted on which locations are the most lively, as tango is a fun experience that is much more formal than other night-life entertainment in Buenos Aires.

It is safe to assume that on any given day, tango will be occurring somewhere in the city if travelers are looking for it. Similarly, given the highly theatrical nature of tango, there are many venues that offer dinner accompanied by a tango dance show . These are commonly included on Argentina tour itineraries  and make for an unforgettable night in Buenos Aires.

Argentina Souvenirs

Finding quality, authentic souvenirs to commemorate a trip or share the host country’s culture with others are not always easy to find. In Argentina, there are a few specific items that international travelers can count on not only for their cultural relevance, but also their utility when they return home.

Since Argentina’s name comes from the Latin word for silver, it is no surprise that silver jewelry and decorations  found here are some of the most refined in the world. They are highly popular with travelers looking to find a valuable piece of art that will not only showcase their experiences in Argentina but also bring that same joy to others who receive it.

As the birthplace of the music genre and dance form of tango , Buenos Aires is set apart from the rest of the country. Therefore, when exploring the urban capital, travelers may consider buying tango CD’s or instructional DVDs that allows them to share the art with those back home.

Argentina’s status as one of the world’s largest meat producers also leads to its being one of the largest producers of leather . This material is crafted into coats, purses, wallets, and other durable accessories that are both comfortable and long-lasting. Travelers are encouraged to be mindful of the fact that many false-leather products are around in Argentina, making verification of the products through close examination of their details very important.

Another one of Argentina’s specialized (and leading) world exports is Malbec wine , distinct for thriving in Argentina's altitude and climate. Sophisticated and delicious, travelers may not wish to give this souvenir away!

Another classic Argentina souvenir includes a "mate y bombilla” gourd . Ornately carved from gourds, travelers will likely have sipped mate at least once or twice during their visit, and it doesn’t hurt to take it home when finished.

Argentina - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Visit Buenos Aires during your Argentina tour.

Covering an area of close to 1 million sq. miles, Argentina has everything, ranging from natural beauty and sultry lifestyles to exotic cuisine and a splendid culture. Considering that the country gave the world things like futbol, beef and tango, a trip to Argentina is sure to be nothing short of spectacular.

The delightful Iguazu Falls, the enchanting Glaciar Perito Moreno, Patagonia… Argentina has its fair share of exhilarating natural beauty. It is home to beautiful wetlands, rustic mountains, vast arid deserts, steppes, Valdivian forests, salt flats, lake districts and ice fields and all kinds of birds and animals that come with these regions.

Tour Highlights

  • Dance the tango at a milonga in Buenos Aires, the city where the dance was invented
  • Visit the Iguazu Falls
  • Try ice hiking on Glacier Perito Moreno
  • See an opera at Teatro Colon (the third best opera house in the world)
  • Travel to The Hill of Seven Colors

Travel Tips

  • Argentinian cuisine is very meat heavy, and rare meatless dishes are often covered in cheese. If you're a vegetarian or a vegan, be sure to do your research beforehand to find a restaurant that caters to you.
  • When on a holiday in Argentina, do as the locals do. Slow down and find a new appreciation for time. Relax, enjoy your meals, and (if you can avoid it) try not to rush.
  • The idea of personal space doesn't always apply in Argentina. Expect locals to stand close to you when chatting. They may also reach out and touch you. Try to remember this is their sociable culture and is not intended to make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Counterfeit money is very common in Argentina. Always double check your notes. Look for the bill's clear hologram by holding it up to the natural light, and run your fingers over the pictured diplomat's suit to ensure it is textured.
  • Around Christmas time, the city of Buenos Aires shuts down almost completely as locals head to the coast. Shops and restaurants (even fast food chains) will likely be closed, so plan ahead if visiting at this time. Consider visiting when the weather is best during Argentinian fall (March to May) or spring (September to November).

Los Glaciares National Park is in the Austral Andes of southwest Argentina

  • Visit the end of the world in Ushuaia: Visit Ushuaia which offers breathtaking views of Argentina's countryside, a massive glacier system, and an array of wildlife. This is Argentina's southernmost point that provides a gateway to Antarctica. A scenic train journey takes you to the city's farthest southern point. Take a boat ride across the Beagle Channel to see the penguin colony on Martillo Island. Also, take the chance to see the Patagonian scenery at Tierra del Fuego National Park. If you enjoy skiing and other winter sports, the region has an abundance of snow and ski resorts.
  • Immerse yourself in the bustling Buenos Aires:  It is difficult not to fall in love with Buenos Aires. Known as the Paris of South America, the city’s stunning architecture, exciting nightlife, lush parks, and diverse cuisines will hold visitors in thrall. A tour of Buenos Aires would take you to La Boca, the location of early European settlers; Plaza de Mayo, the magnificent memorial square honoring Argentine independence; Teatro Colon, one of the most breathtaking concert venues in the world; and many other locations. In addition, you can partake in a wine tasting session, taste a premium steak, watch a football match, and enjoy the elegant and seductive movements of Tango dancers.
  • Take in the magic of Iguazu Falls:  The magnificent Iguazu Falls is the world's largest system of natural waterfalls. They are known for their awesome strength and thunderous flow of gushing water. Feel the raw force of nature as you take a boat ride to look down at the renowned Devil's Throat, a section of the falls that generates almost half of the flow of the entire fall. Participate in watersports like rafting and kayaking for a more immersive experience. If you do not feel like getting wet, there are also five paved hiking trails as well as wildlife viewing areas.
  • Admire the glaciers in El Calafate:  El Calafate is the gateway to Patagonia and it is known for its magnificent glaciers. While you are there, make it a point of visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world, and the sight of large ice chunks crashing into the ice field surrounding the glacier is simply awe-inspiring. In Los Glaciares National Park, visit Spegazzini Glacier, Upsala Glacier and Mount Fitz Roy. Explore the city of El Calafate which also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, boating on crystal-clear rivers and lakes, hiking in the Andes, and riding horses on historic estancias.
  • Experience the breath of fresh air in Salta:  The northern city of Salta offers radically different experiences from the glaciers and waterfalls that Argentina is known for. You will get to enjoy Salta 's desert landscapes, arid altitude views, and laidback way of life. Marvel at the renowned fourteen-colored rainbow mountains, learn about the city's past, sample some fine wine in Cafayate, climb the Cerro San Bernardo hill and snap some photos of the Salinas Grandes. There are so many things to see and do in Salta.

Argentina FAQ's

Argentina is the third most populous country in South America and one of the largest Spanish speaking countries in the world. From the distinct and beautiful landscapes of Patagonia to the rich and artsy culture of Buenos Aires, Argentina is famous for many things. Wine, soccer (futbol), Gauchos, and Tango are all things Argentinean. The country has a rich cultural history with lifestyles uniquely their own. The Argentine people take great pride in the fact that Pope Francis is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the country boasts one of the highest literacy rates in South America with women leading the way.

In terms of geography, Argentina is an exceptionally diverse country, surrounding everything from harsh deserts to humid jungles. Stretching from the subtropical north to the Subantarctic regions of beautiful Patagonia in the south, Argentina also boasts a rich cultural, artistic, and architectural heritage that has drawn upon many influences from around the world. With its wonderful 'barrios,' including colorful arts neighborhoods such as La Boca and trendy districts like Palermo, Buenos Aires has a particularly European feel and is the epicenter, known for its music and dance, for its cuisine, fine wines, and outstanding nightlife. In addition to its many cultural attractions, the country also boasts huge glaciers of the snow-capped Andes and the stunning Iguazu Falls , one of the most popular destinations in all of South America. A few other highlights include the magnificent city of Mendoza , a gateway to the sprawling Wine Country. The small town of El Calafate - Lago Argentino that sits on the shores of Lake Argentino. Ushuaia , 'the End of the World', with it's strategic location to explore the sprawling Tierra del Fuego National Park. And the opportunity to experience the Gaucho culture of the Pampas region at Estancias (ranches) near Buenos Aires .

While December to March are the months in which Patagonia in South Argentina is most efficiently accessible, the complete country can be visited all year round. The weather in Buenos Aires is ordinarily hot over these months but a visit in the cooler, brisk months of July and August can be pleasant. The Lake District comes alive with wildflowers over spring (September to November), while autumn in the wine valleys encompassing Mendoza features gold and copper colored vines, simply beautiful against the backdrop of the Andes. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Argentina .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Bus: Bus travel is another means of exploring Argentina, although distances can be long (expect 20+ hour journeys) and if you`re only here for two weeks, it`s probably better to spend a little bit more on flights. By Rental Car: If you`ve got a bit more time, consider renting a car. Car rental is readily available throughout Argentina, though it is a bit expensive compared with other forms of transportation. Travelling by car allows you to visit locations that are hard to reach by public transportation. Patagonia, in the South of Argentina, is a popular driving location among tourists due to the magnificent views across many miles of open land. Argentina generally recognizes valid drivers` licenses from foreign jurisdictions. Drivers must be over 21. The rental companies will charge the renters card ARS6000 to be used in the event of an accident. Traffic regulations in Argentina are generally the same as in the US, but the local often ignore the regulations. On roads and highways it`s mandatory to have car lights on, even during daytime. Be aware that the driving style in Argentina is aggressive and chaotic. Pay attention at night. By Train: There are trains from Buenos Aires to Tucuman, Cordoba, Rosario (from Retiro station), Bahia Blanca and Mar del Plata (from Constitucion station) among others. Also some limited services in and out of Viedma and Bariloche. Tickets are very cheap. In recent years the government has promoted the re-establishment of long distance passenger trains, although most lines still operate at a low frequency (one or two departures weekly). The rail network is very limited, and intercity buses offer more frequencies in most corridors.

The currency of Argentina is the Argentine peso. US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for Argentine pesos upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the city. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Argentina .

Spanish is the official language of Argentina and a vast majority of Argentines speak Spanish as their first language. Other minor languages common to Argentina are English and Italian.

Argentina is well known as the birthplace of the tango and a steak lover’s paradise. But as South America’s largest Spanish-speaking country, it’s also much, much more. From the resort town of Ushuaia, affectionately known as the "End of the World" on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, visitors enjoy convenient access to day hikes and cruises that unveil the finest aspects of Tierra del Fuego National Park. For instance, a short boat trip from Ushuaia allows you to intimately encounter penguins, including the only colony of King Penguins found outside the Antarctic subcontinent.

GUIDE TO TRAVEL argentina

Best times to travel and other useful information

WHERE & W HEN TO TRAVEL ARGENTINA

Argentina is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. Making its seasons the opposite to those experienced in the Northern Hemisphere. Its summer months are between December and February and the winter runs from June to August.

Argentina’s size means there are a varying degree of the seasons. This very much depends on which region of the country you are taking a trip to. During the winter, Southern Patagonia is covered in snow and frequented by icy winds. This means its a great time to see the glaciers in Patagonia, or take part in winter sports.

The winter time is not the ideal time to visit Patagonia, but it is our favorite time of the year to visit the north of Argentina after the sweltering summer heat subsides.

The center of Argentina is an all year round destination, although the spring and fall are great  times of the year to visit Buenos Aires and Mendoza. If you’re looking to discover Argentina’s wildlife, spring is by far the best time to take a trip to Patagonia’s Atlantic coast to take part in wildlife spotting.

PASSPORT & VISA

All travelers need a valid passport for at least 90 days after their departure from Argentina. However, we strongly recommend traveling with at least 6 months’ validity on your passport at all times.

If you are a U.S. citizen, we recommend visiting VisaHQ who can help you with a range of expedited passport services. This includes new passport applications, passport renewals, and any required visas.

Argentina also requires that you have sufficient unused pages in your passport, allowing for any necessary stamps upon arrival and departure.

Check with your airline in case you have any connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Argentina. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa.

Within the towns and cities, there are plenty of parks and tree-lined town squares to enjoy. While Argentina’s stunning national parks will dazzle your kids with everything from mighty glaciers and mountains to mesmerizing waterfalls.

If your kids love cowboys, they’re in for a treat in Argentina. They’ll be able to spot Gauchos strolling through the cities or riding their way through the Pampas, with plenty of chances to join them, especially with a day visit or stay at a traditional estancia.

Involving the family in nature, you’ll all be able to enjoy spotting walrus, southern right and killer whales, as well as penguins in the south. Plus capybara, giant anteaters, and alligators in the north and east.

CULTURE & LANGUAGE

Argentine Spanish is different from the Spanish spoken in other Spanish speaking countries, with the most notable difference being with the use of ‘vos’ instead of ‘tu’ in the second person.

Argentinians also have different pronunciations with ‘ll’ and ‘y’ becoming ‘sh’. The differences to the Spanish spoken in Argentina are not so significant that if you already speak some Spanish, communicating won’t be a problem.

Argentina is home to more languages than just Spanish, divided into two groups. The first group includes indigenous languages spoken in different regions of the country such as Mapuche, Quechua, Toba, and Guarani. The second group consists of the languages spoken by immigrants such as Welsh in Puerto Madryn and German in Bariloche.

Many of the immigrant groups continue to converse in their language to keep their culture alive. French, Polish and Russian can also be heard along with large communities of Koreans, Chinese and Iranians in Argentina.

FOOD SCENE & DINING

All meals in Argentina start later in the day than in the United States. Usually, lunch is served around 2 pm or later and dinner is served around 9 pm. Buenos Aires is a city that takes dining seriously, and meals can easily last for hours.

Argentina is renowned for its steak, and there are several parrilla steakhouses in every Argentine city where you can find asado, barbecued beef, of excellent quality. Pair an asado with a glass of Malbec wine for the ultimate dining delight. You may also consider trying yerba mate with a dish at dinner, as it is the traditional gaucho drink.

You can’t leave Argentina, let alone a meal, without trying their national dessert consisting of dulce de leche , a sweet confection of milk jelly, and the alfajores cookie. Alfajores are cookie sandwiches filled with dulce de leche.

VACCINATIONS & HEALTH

No vaccinations are required to visit Argentina, but please review the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention Recommendations . Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include the MMR vaccine, DTP vaccine, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu shot.

Travelers do not need yellow fever inoculations for many countries in South America . However, sometimes they are required if you travel from one endemic country to another.

For example, if you travel to Brazil you do not need a vaccination, however, if traveling to Bolivia and then on to Brazil, it IS required. In this instance, if you don’t have a certificate, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

Argentina does not have yellow fever so you can travel from Argentina to Brazil or vice versa without the certificate/vaccination. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

MONEY & CURRENCY

Argentina’s official currency is the Peso and the exchange rate as of 2020 is approximately ARS $72.00 to USD $1.00 (for up to date exchange rates go to XE Currency Converter ). Make sure to bring cash with you in US Dollars as they can be easily exchanged throughout Argentina.

Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and American Express are all accepted within Argentina, although Visa is by far the most widely accepted. You may have difficulties with changing your traveler’s checks outside of Buenos Aires.

You shouldn’t have any problems using larger bills – unless you are buying a small amount and try to use an ARS $500 or ARS $1000 bill, especially in smaller stores such as kiosks. They might not accept it as they may not have enough change to give back to you.

Aerolineas Argentinas Travel Guide Argentina

GETTING AROUND

From Argentina’s northernmost point to the End of the World in Ushuaia, Argentina stretches over 2,268 miles and 889 miles from east to west and is just slightly less than 1/3 the size of the USA. If you want to see all of Argentina’s highlights, the distances you’ll need to travel are pretty vast.

We recommend travelers to take internal flights to save time and not endure long road trips. However, Argentina’s long-distance bus services are incredibly comfortable, and a 20+ hour bus journey is not as painful or uncomfortable as it sounds.

The long-distance buses have different levels of comfort, and there isn’t much difference between a ‘comfort’ seat and a fully horizontal bed with waiter service included. In some regions of Argentina, hiring a car to drive through the stunning landscapes is the best way to get around. This is especially true in the northeast and the Lake District in Patagonia.

Brazil Travel Guide adaptors

ELECTRICITY

Argentina recently switched its plugs and outlets to Type I (diagonal flat prongs). The neutral and line wires are reversed from those found in various countries such as Australia. You may need to take a plug adapter with you (changes your appliance plug and allows it to fit into the outlet) or a voltage converter.

Before plugging anything into the outlet, double-check the voltage of your appliance to make sure that it is compatible. Travelers from North America can generally use a plug adapter with their devices such as laptops as they usually run between 120-220V. Therefore they won’t need a voltage converter.

However, this is not always true for other appliances which may not work at 220V such as hair dryers.

Buenos Aires

Enchanting while youthful, historic yet spirited.

Buenos Aires is a vibrant blend of traditional ‘asado’ (steakhouses) and tango bars, colorful Fileteado artwork and grand Belle Époque mansions. Whether you’re seeking a luxury family vacation or a private tour, we’ll show you the city’s secrets. Between learning to make tasty empanadas with a hands-on cooking class and sampling varieties of helado, Argentina’s take on ice-cream, you’ll discover the passion and history of the Tango during a private lesson, tour through the city’s urban street art scene, or soak in the atmosphere as you watch a match in La Boca neighborhood – the home of Argentinian football.

Celebrating the finest glass of red we all know and love.

Where better to experience the culinary excellence of Argentina than in the home of Malbec – Mendoza. Experience an abundance of wine tastings and local delicacies with skilled sommeliers. During harvest season, test your hand at grape picking and learn the art of winemaking before we set up a private dining experience among the vines. Beyond the cellar door, is the world-class wine resort Casa de Uco. Famous for its picturesque valley setting, and laden with stretches of vineyards, the Andes is its epic backdrop.

Northern or southern Patagonia? Why not visit both.

The landscapes shift dramatically as you journey down the Andes from Bariloche to El Calafate and onto Ushuaia, at the southern tip of the continent. Our Argentina experts have tried and tested unique hiking routes, located epic glacier views and identified remote lakes for you to experience in a way that very few get to. Try your hand at fly fishing, take in the azure ice formations of Perito Moreno Glacier , and marvel at the incredible Mt. Fitz Roy; topping off one almighty bucket list adventure.
