James Taylor (born March 12th 1948 in Boston, US) is a Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, US.

His introspective, heartfelt songs, backed by intricate folk sand blues stylings on the acoustic guitar, made James Taylor one of the most beloved musicians of the 1970s and the archetype of a singer/songwriter. His music mired the sense of emotional weariness that followed the tumultuous end of the sixties.

Taylor began playing the cello before moving on to guitar, finding an interest in blues and folk music. He began to play local gigs with his brother and various acts before moving to New York in 1966, after receiving treatment for depression. From here, Taylor began to meet other musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Danny Kortchmar and Carole King. He drew the attention of Paul McCartney and George Harrison, becoming the first non-British act to be signed to their label, Apple. His eponymous debut, released through Apple, failed to do well commercially, partly due to Taylor's drug addiction preventing him from being able to promote the album successfully.

However, his second album, "Sweet Baby James" (1970) was released to great success, reaching number three in the Billboard Charts, earning several Grammy Award nominations. The album brought Taylor widespread popularity and from here, he became one of the most successful and beloved artists of the 20th century.

WIth the single, cover of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend in Me" from his 1971 album, "Mud Slide Slim," Taylor earned a number one single, with this hit cementing Taylor's talents in the public eye. Yet, struggling with personal issues, Taylor withdrew from the limelight, producing few albums with little success until he returned with 1974's "Gorilla" which reached number six in the charts. In 1975, he signed to Columbia Records, releasing a greatest hits album, which went on to sell 11 million copies and his 1977 album "JT" which was certified double-platinum.

Following this period, James Taylor continued to release several albums, although did not reach the same level of success as these previous releases. Throughout his career he has been involved politically and with humanitarian causes, performing at several benefit concerts, most recently supporting Barack Obama's election campaign. In total, Taylor has received six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

Live reviews

Do yourself a favor and go see James Taylor. He did a fantastic job; hard to believe he is 66. You would never know it by the way he plays or the way he looks.

He played all of the songs you wanted to hear. Literally, it was like a greatest hits album. Plus, the great songs hidden away on albums the huge fans want to hear.

I saw him at jiffy lube live with my parents. He was scheduled to come on at 8 but started about 8:15 with Something in the Way she moves. Wow. He also shared a great story about playing that song for Paul McCartney and George Harrison before he was signed to the Beetles record label.

The thing that impressed me most was how normal and genuine James Taylor is. He felt more like the guy from your local bar who, for whatever reason, never was discovered.

I go to a lot of concerts of various genres and he was hands down one of the best. Right up there with the Billy Joel and Elton John show I saw was about 15 years ago. I definitely plan on making James Taylor at jiffy lube live a regular summer show. Crowd is definitely kid friendly which can't be said for most concerts these days.

My favorite moments were Something in the Way She Moves and Baby James. That said, the whole show was amazing. You could have recorded it and sold it as a live album.

One last time, go see James Taylor while you still have the chance.

James Taylor is a classic American singer and songwriter. He is one of the country’s greatest talents. He has had immense success. Some of the genres of his music are country, blues, soft rock, folk rock, rock, and pop.

He first started out in the 1960s and continues to make music to this day. Taylor is a great musician. Some of his greatest hits include “Fire and Rain”, “You’ve Got a Friend”, “Long Ago and Far Away”, “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”, and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”.

He is an awesome guitar player. His voice is beautiful and unique. He has a large fan base. His performances are simply magical. You really get into the songs and the way he performs. It feels intimate at times. You feel joy that you are able to witness this legend still be able to do what he does after all these years. Taylor is an American treasure.

His voice is rich and smooth. No one sounds the way he does. His music hits you right in the heart. He has a way of performing that will make you pay attention and fall in love with his music. He is still a great performer after doing it for many years.

One of the best shows I've seen! The eclectic feel of the whole program was continuous from start to finish. The musicians, the back drops and James himself blended together with such ease. At one point, a fan was near the stage to have her friend take a picture. James saw them and started talking to the lady. Made her move closer so her friend could get both of them in the picture! He was sincere, down to earth and talked to the audience several times like we were all friends. Who does that these days; J.T. If you left the show not happy or satisfied, there is something seriously wrong with you! With a 20min intermission, there were two full sets. They played 2+ hours of music! James said "we're going to play one more than go to intermission. Why we have to take intermission I don't know but was told we had to" and everyone laughed. Still down to earth after 50 years and true to his craft and his fans! If you appreciate music, no matter what genre, this show is a must see for all ages.

I’ve waited 40 years to see James Taylor and his voice is as great as it was then. The show was tremendous. I loved how before each song he would give a little story about why he wrote the song, he was so funny too! And the background effects were so moving. He introduced each band member and a photo popped up of that band member as a child. It was like being with a family. My type of show. And during the intermission he went to his fans to take photos with them and sign autographs. He did 4 encores. Just melted my heart ❤️ James Taylor is a true gem, a genuine soul that has blessed us with his talent for decades! I would highly recommend his show to anyone who appreciates musical talent at its best. He is truly loved by everyone who works with him and who comes in his path even if it’s us fans.

Super evening with James Taylor in Ottawa, Canada!

Beautiful brass section, perfect acoustics, he played for 3 hrs, he just went on and on: the crowd loved him. Three encores. He was also very generous with his All Star Band, incredible musicians. Speaks fluently French: he gave me a big hug!!! What a guitar palyer!

What a team with:

Jimmy Johnson on bass

Larry Goldings on keyboard

Lou Marini on horns

Luis Conte on percussion

Michael Landau on electric guitar

Steve Gadd on drums

Walt Fowler on horns and keyboard

ANdrea ZOn on fiddle

Arnold McUller, vocal

A good mix of old and new songs. He is sooo generous with his audience!

Vocally, James Taylor is still on point, and his All-Star Band is definitely that. James understood that people come to hear the classics that made him musical royalty, so he only played 2 or 3 songs off of the newer album. The set design and lighting design was simple but beautiful, and made the audience experience just that more magical. At the encore(s), James saved a surprise for us in Boise; he brought out his old friend Carole King, a fellow Idahoan of 32 years, and she serenaded us not once, but twice... with Mr. Taylor, of course. It's a performance I'll not easily forget. Thanks for coming to Boise, good sir (and company).

The James Taylor concert was very enjoyable. I love his storytelling, his connection with the fans, and his love for what he does. His new album is a bit on the slower side, but it's nice to listen to.

The only negative was he left leaving all of us wanting more. He spent a large amount of the show on his new album, which was fine, but his true fans also came wanting his older music...Up on a roof, Handyman, You,ve got a friend,,,the list goes on, not played.

I give the show a B-. I would go again. Maybe next time he'll remember his hits, not just what he wants to promote.

James Taylor is a humble man, a great story teller and fantastic entertainer. When they took their intermission, he sat on the edge of the stage giving autographs and taking selfies, in fact the rest of the band had to get him to quit when it was time to start up again!! His band and back up singers are all extremely talented on their own but make beautiful music when they perform together. It was my first time seeing James Taylor but if he ever comes to town again I will be first in line to see him again.

A definite Top 10 concert for me. I've seen JT and Bonnie Raitt separately, four times. Love them both. They sing the music of my lifetime. The setting at AT&T Park surpassed my expectation. After Bonnie Raitt played for over an hour, James Taylor blew it out of the park for over an hour and a half, THEN they came out together and performed several songs, then encores, then ONE MORE!

Thought the magic of the night would never end.

Such a fun show. Loved every second of being in their company.

James Taylor charms with classics and humor at Wolf Trap

The songwriting legend ended his months-long tour in the DC area

James Taylor concluded his 2023 tour with the last of three shows at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA on Sunday (Sept 10th).

In a 24-song, two-set performance, Taylor and his eight-piece band demonstrated what quality singer-songwriter fare is all about. Opening with “Something in the Way She Moves,” Taylor welcomed the crowd under a canopy of warm campfire-like lighting.

Taking a stool as his first set began, it was clear Taylor was treating Wolf Trap as his living room, and the 7,000 in the stands were his invited guests.

Each number was accompanied by visuals that perfectly complimented his compositions. After all, Taylor admitted he sometimes thinks like a painter, calling “Copperline” a North Carolina, “Landscape in a Song.” “Sweet Baby James” features images of a classic pop-up book that tells the story of a toddler dreaming of adventures on the ranch. And “Mona,” Taylor’s wry song about his pet pig, showed pictures of Taylor with the porker.

So mellow was the first set of music, when Taylor switched to his Carolina-blue electric guitar for the bluesy “Steamroller,” it elicited gasps from the audience. Next came “Mexico,” a Jimmy Buffet-like breezy piece of musical escapism.

Taylor also elicited belly laughs. Deep laughs at his dry wit and deadpan delivery. Taylor compared his electric guitar to the “gas-powered” and “horse-and-buggy” guitars of the past in one hysterical story. He had the crowd guffawing just as hard as he had them intently listening. Rare is the entertainer who can achieve this.

Though most of Taylor’s music is acoustic guitar-driven, Taylor’s impeccable band still had their time to shine. “Steamroller” showcased their talents and earned His All-Star Band a standing ovation. Set one closer “Up on the Roof” similarly displayed the group’s incredible ability to layer complex sounds into a musical image.

The second set was more hits-heavy—a fact Taylor himself teased throughout the first half. “You’ve Got a Friend” was followed immediately by “Carolina in My Mind.” “Shower the People” succeeded “Fire and Rain.”

With each note of these time-tested classics, it was clear we were all watching something special unfold as an icon’s notes gripped us and had us United by melody. Not beholden to any genre, stars of country, folk, rock, pop, and beyond cite Taylor as an influence. For James Taylor songs don’t just define a generation. Taylor’s body of work continues to define music itself.

Tour Kicks Off in Australia, New Zealand and Japan

*** North American Dates Added***

After presenting at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony and preparing to leave for the world tour, Carole commented, "After two weeks of joyous rehearsals in LA with James Taylor and our old bandmates, Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, and Lee Sklar, along with more recent band members Robbie Kondor, guest guitarist, Rudy Guess, and singers Arnold McCuller, Kate Markowitz, and Andrea Zonn, well, if I were a horse, I'd be pawing the ground, ready to break out of the starting gate. Imagine me excited to go out on tour! I'm so looking forward to seeing you at a Troubadour Reunion concert. We'll be heading first for Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, and then we'll be back in North America starting early in May. All right, then. Here we go!" --Carole

LOS ANGELES, CA - Iconic musicians Carole King and James Taylor announced that they will embark on a "Troubadour Reunion" world tour. The world tour will kick off in Melbourne, Australia on March 27, 2010 and will travel to New Zealand and Japan before coming to North America and Europe. This once-in-a-lifetime event brings together two of the most beloved singer/songwriters for a rare concert experience. The set list will include a breadth of material including songs they performed during their 1969 debut show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, which helped propel them both to the world stage.

Tickets for some dates in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles have already gone on-sale. Additional dates in North America will be announced soon.

The idea for the "Troubadour Reunion" tour came together in 2007 after Taylor and King performed at the famed Los Angeles venue for the first time since 1969 to celebrate the Troubadour's 50th Anniversary. The shows sold out immediately and garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The Los Angeles Times noted "the sense of occasion [and] weight of history in the evening" and Variety said "Taylor and King reminded us about the intensity of song, that the artistically-rich and commercially-viable are not mutually exclusive and how one tiny club continues to be a birthing room for some of this city's most memorable music."

Now fans outside of Los Angeles will be able to experience what was created on that magical evening in 2007. Nearly four decades after helping define the singer"songwriter movement, King and Taylor will tour together with their original bandmates guitarist Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar, famous in their own right as "The Section".

"When James and I first played together in the early seventies, we connected immediately, both musically and personally, with an effortless, comfortable familiarity," says Carole King. "After we reunited in 2007 with Danny Kortchmar, Lee Sklar, and Russ Kunkel, the original band from our early Troubadour shows, none of us wanted the fun to stop. We can't wait to bring our Troubadour Reunion tour to Australia."

"This tour, our Troubadour Reunion, has been waiting to happen for a long time and the years seem to have vanished, where does the time go?" asks Taylor. "When we reunited for the Troubadour's 50th Anniversary celebration, it felt like yesterday. It was and still is all about the music and the songs that we get to perform together."

Carole King performed with James Taylor at the Troubadour in November 1969. This historic show marked King's debut as a solo artist after penning 22 Top 40 hits for artists ranging from Aretha Franklin to the Monkees, while James was supporting his self-titled Apple Records release featuring classics such as "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves." Both have since become multi-platinum-selling artists, GRAMMY® winners, and members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In 1971, King gave us the landmark Tapestry . The album received a Diamond Award from the RIAA for sales of more than 10 million units in the U.S., with more than 25 million units sold worldwide. King was the first woman to win four GRAMMY® Awards in one year (Best Album, Best Song, Best Record, and Best Vocal Performance in 1972), a feat unsurpassed for more than 25 years, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1973. In 1987, King and Gerry Goffin were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 1988. Goffin and King were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and were honored by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004 with the GRAMMY® Trustees' Award. To date, more than 400 Carole King compositions have been recorded by more than 1000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles - many reaching #1. She is arguably the most successful and revered female songwriter in pop music history. Carole King has released 25 solo albums, the most recent being The Living Room Tour double-live CD on her own Rockingale Records label. The companion DVD, entitled Welcome to My Living Room , is now available.

Over the course of his career, James Taylor has sold more than 40 million albums, and won more than 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards as well as five GRAMMY® Awards. Taylor's first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA's elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. In 2000, Taylor was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences named Taylor its MUSICARES Person of the Year. Taylor's CD/DVD One Man Band (2007) was nominated for an Emmy and his most recent album, Covers , was nominated for two GRAMMY® Awards in 2008. He most recently released Other Covers in April 2009.

James Taylor, Carole King Team Up for Troubadour Reunion Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

James Taylor and Carole King , a pair of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted singer-songwriters, will bring their Troubadour Reunion tour to North America this May. The trek marks the first time in 40 years — since the original Troubadour shows back in 1970 — that the two have toured together, though the pair did reunite for six shows at Los Angeles’ Troubadour in 2007 to celebrate that venue’s 50th anniversary. (Read our report from the show here: James Taylor and Carole King Return in High Style to the Troubadour .) “This is like one of those dreams where you go back to school,” Taylor joked onstage in ’07.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean's apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

I n 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company's recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the "Harry Potter" franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio's standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio's catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as "Casablanca," "My Fair Lady," "Rebel Without a Cause," "Auntie Mame" and many more.

"We're off the leash," says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

"We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do," Taylor says. "I find that 'classics' guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, 'I can't believe this is where we are.' It's just the look on their faces when they realize 'Casablanca' filmed here, or James Dean stood right here."

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network's 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network's top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot's Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film "Captain Blood."

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio's animation history. That's why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as "Termite Terrace," which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner's moving animation production elsewhere.

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of "East of Eden," it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

"That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him," Kahn says. "I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash."

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. "It's a really historic area of the lot that hasn't really changed a lot in all these years," says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. "Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office."

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the "Friends" set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio's modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

"It feels so good to have TCM here," Kahn says. "People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film."
