The MV Astoria is the world's oldest serving cruise ship.

In her 72 years since sailing out of the Swedish dockyards in Gothenburg, she has survived some remarkable things. Originally called the MS Stockholm, she has changed names no fewer than eleven times. The Astoria's long service record might dispel the maritime myth that it is bad luck to rename a ship. Although, during her twelve lives, she has been less auspicious than those sailing on and around her.

In 1956 she ploughed into and sank the SS Andrea Doria. The impressive icebreaking prow of the ship sent the Italian luxury liner to the bottom of the north Atlantic, killing 51.

Four years later she was rebuilt and sold to the East German government to become a leisure ship for cruising communists.

Renamed the Völkerfreundschaft or "Friendship of Peoples", she would take East Germans across seas for holidays around Cuba and the Baltic states.

Reinhard Brand, a crewmember for the ship, said although the entertainment wasn't up to much by modern standards he recalled the Spartan sailings fondly:

"It was the one real possibility to legally leave the country," he told NDR radio about his Cold War cruise work. "Though it was hard work from sun up to sun set."

Not everyone was a fan. Several passengers would use the cover of a cruise to defect and swim to shore in the West. Eventually the cruise had to cancel sailings in the Mediterranean Sea due the number of passengers who were jumping ship.

Eventually the cruise had to station a state police officer on deck for sailings into the Black sea via Turkey. Brand recounted how the crew would have to "keep watch over the passengers while we made our sailing through the Bosporus, in case anyone jumped."

The Völkerfreundschaft was eventually sold to a Panamanian company in 1985 and in the time since has been used as a floating barracks, a Norwegian asylum ship in Oslo and changed hands countless times. However many times she changed her name the ship never did shake the reputation for sinking the Andrea Doria.

At the end of the Cold War she was towed to Genoa and renamed the Italia I, although she was unofficially dubbed la Nave Della Morte or the "Ship of Death" by the Italian tabloids. More recent history involves fending off pirates in the Gulf of Aiden on a 2008 repositioning to Australia while named the MS Athena.

Her final European sailing, and possibly her last voyage, is scheduled for October from the United Kingdom to Norway. It will be the last chance to sail on the storied ship.

Originally built in 1948 as the Stockholm, the 70-year-old ship became a household name in 1956 after it collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria off Nantucket, resulting in 52 deaths. Mortally wounded, the Andrea Doria rolled over and eventually sank in 240 feet of water. The Stockholm was repaired and continued operating. 

The incident with the Andrea Doria was just the beginning of a storied history. In 1960, Stockholm was sold to East Germany and renamed Volkerfreundschaft (“friendship between nations”), taking members of the Communist party on pleasure cruises until 1985, when it was laid up and offered for sale. When cruising “western” waters, the ship was notorious for its frequent asylum-seeking defectors.

Rebuilt in the 1990s by an Italian line, the vessel went on to sail for a long list of cruise companies. It currently operates on charter to U.K.-based Cruise and Maritime Voyages and French-based Rivages du Monde.

‘Ship of death’: A floating piece of cruise history may be nearing its final voyage

Over a life span of more than 70 years, the second-oldest cruise ship still on the seas has gone by many names. It was the Stockholm, the Völkerfreundschaft, the Volker, the Fridtjof Nansen, the Italia Prima, the Athena. And, for a time, it was derided as “la nave della morte” — the ship of death.

The 525-foot vessel was launched as the flagship of the Swedish American Line just a few years after the end of World War II, in the country’s first major step toward again becoming a maritime power. The ship took on a different kind of notoriety, however, after colliding with an opulent Italian ocean liner, the Andrea Doria, in a 1956 maritime disaster that killed 51 people.

In the years that followed, the Swedish-built ship continued having brushes with history, becoming a kind of Forrest Gump of maritime vessels. It carried members of East Germany’s Communist Party for pleasure cruises in the 1960s and ’70s and housed Middle Eastern refugees seeking asylum in Norway in the ’80s. It was later converted to a cruise ship and has become one of the few remaining classic cruise ships still on the water, a “Love Boat”-era vessel that sails out of the Mexican resort town of Puerto Peñasco under the name Astoria.

But now, the storied ship may be approaching its final voyage. The company that charters the Astoria, United Kingdom-based Cruise and Maritime Voyages, said this month that it had made the “difficult decision” not to renew its contract. In an announcement first reported by the Arizona Republic , the cruise line said that the Astoria “will be leaving the CMV fleet and 2020 will be her Farewell Season.”

That leaves the ship’s fate uncertain. With a capacity of just 550 passengers and none of the over-the-top thrills of modern-day cruise ships — the waterslides, go-karts and ice rinks — the Astoria is difficult to market and may struggle to find a new operator, said cruise ship journalist and maritime historian Peter Knego.

“But she’s had so many lives and survived so many things, I don’t want to write her off and say, ‘Oh, she’s going to go for scrap,’ ” he said. “Which is what happened to a lot of these other ships.”

The demise of formal nights on cruises: How dress codes are tearing passengers apart

At 72 years old, the Astoria has already far outlived the typical 25-year life span of a ship, said Knego, who has given lectures aboard the ship about its past.

As the Stockholm, the ship was a point of pride for Sweden. It carried the Swedish American actress Greta Garbo, who Knego said would book three cabins — “one for her luggage, one for her staff, and one for herself” — and hide out on long voyages from New York to Sweden.

The collision with the Andrea Doria, which was viewed as one of the most beautiful ocean liners of its time, with its three swimming pools and wide collection of art, came eight years after the Stockholm’s maiden voyage. On the night of July 25, 1956, the two ships were sailing a heavily trafficked area off Nantucket Island, Mass. The captain of the Andrea Doria was speeding through dense fog in hopes of staying on schedule, History.com noted , while the Stockholm was sailing north of the recommended route.

At 11:22 p.m., the Stockholm hit the Andrea Doria at a nearly 90-degree angle, ripping a 40-foot gash into the side of the Italian liner.

“Danger immediate,” the Doria said in a radio message soon after . “Need lifeboats, as many as possible.”

The Italian ship sank hours after the crash, her demise unfolding on television in black-and-white footage. Forty-six people aboard the Andrea Doria died in the incident, with another five on the Stockholm.

It was a major news story, one of the biggest maritime disasters since the Titanic, and one that unfolded with icons including the actress Ruth Roman aboard. But the cause was never fully litigated, as the two cruise lines agreed to a settlement out of court.

Murky Mystery in the Deep

The Stockholm continued sailing for several years, until being sold in 1960 to the East German government, which bestowed the name Völkerfreundschaft, or “Friendship between nations.” The ship made the news again in 1970, when a passenger jumped overboard to become “a free man” and was unexpectedly joined by three others.

“A machinist with a carefully laid plan to defect leaped off a Cuba-bound East German ship near the Florida Keys today and was suddenly joined by three medical researchers who wanted to escape from Communism,” said a story in the New York Times . “All four were picked up by a small boat, chartered by the machinist’s brother, which had come out in rough seas to the Communist ship.”

After 25 years of ownership, the government sold the ship.

“People thought it was going to go for scrap,” Knego said. “That was 1985.”

Instead, the Völkerfreundschaft became the Fridtjof Nansen and hosted refugees as a kind of Red Cross-like ship in Norway. After it changed hands again, Knego said, “You think, okay, this ship is done. It’s really old. It’s been around for 40 years, which is almost twice the life of any normal ship at that time. But no.”

An Italian company purchased the Fridtjof Nansen in 1989. The media in Italy, not having forgotten the Andrea Doria disaster, heralded it as the “ship of death.” But the old ocean liner was reinvented in Italy, re-christened the Italia I and transformed into a cruise ship with a smoking room, casino, shopping area, pool, dining room, theater and spa.

It repeatedly changed owners and names before joining the Cruise and Maritime Voyages fleet in 2015. Knego said there is “nothing like this ship in the world,” with its small scale, original artwork, wraparound promenade and storied past. It would be a loss, he said, if the “floating piece of history” does not get another life this time.

“Most people that really love ships believe they have a soul,” Knego said. “And definitely, the Stockholm — she’s got more than one soul.”

Owner denies world’s oldest cruise ship has been sold for recycling

Popular vessel with a colourful career spanning 75 years may be sold for further trading, according to The Roundtable

The owner of the world’s oldest oceangoing cruise ship denies that it is ending a 75-year career.

A spokesman for Puerto Rico-based The Roundtable LLC claims that reports by brokers this week that the 16,144-gt Astoria (built 1948) has been sold for recycling at a European Union-approved are incorrect.

This denial comes despite S&P Global’s International Ships Register recently changed the ship's status to “to be broken up”.

However, The Roundtable spokesman told TradeWinds on Wednesday that while a deal to sell the ship is currently being negotiated, the buyer has indicated that the ship will be used for further trading.

The Astoria has had what is arguably one of the most colourful careers of any ship. It began in the dark days of World War II, when Swedish American Line ordered a passenger ship at AB Gotaverken in 1944.

Built with an ice-strengthened bow for year-round transatlantic liner service, the ship, as Stockholm, sailed on its first voyage in February 1948, becoming the world’s first post-war passenger ship newbuilding.

Small in comparison with other passenger ships engaged in the transatlantic trade, the Stockholm would have had an unremarkable career had it not slammed into the flagship of the Italian government’s passenger fleet, the 29,000-gt Andrea Doria (built 1953), on a foggy night off New York in July 1956.

The Andrea Doria sank. The Stockholm survived with a crumpled bow. The collision cost the lives of 51 passengers and crew from both ships.

Swedish American Line sold the Stockholm to East Germany’s VEB Deutsche Seereederei in 1960.

Renamed Volkerfreundschaft, it was converted into a cruise ship for the Communist Party and trade union members.

The Volkerfreundschaft was sold in 1985 to Neptunus Rex Enterprises, a Panamanian-registered company that chartered it to the Norwegian government, which used it as a barracks ship in Oslo for asylum seekers.

During this time the ship was named after the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen.

Italy’s Starlauro was the next owner, acquiring it in 1989 with the intention of rebuilding it for further use as the cruise ship Sorrento.

The ship was sold to Nina di Navigazione before any work was done, and soon it was moved to a shipyard where it was completely gutted and rebuilt into the Italia Prima, a modern cruise ship capable of carrying 580 passengers.

Nina mostly put the Italia Prima out on charter to other cruise operators, as did next owner Classic International Cruises, for which it sailed as Athena.

Next, the ship was sold to Portuguese start-up Portuscale Cruises, which renamed it Azores and put it out under charter.

UK-based Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) was one of those charterers. It renamed the ship Astoria and continued to charter it from mortgage holder Montepio Bank after Portuscale collapsed in 2015.

CMV entered administration in 2020, leading to the Astoria being seized by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

Montepio stepped in to reclaim the vessel, moving it to Rotterdam, where attempts were made to find a buyer.

The Roundtable, a company affiliated with crypto currency billionaire Brock Pierce, acquired the Astoria in mid-2021 with the intention of using it as a cruise ship.

The company later backtracked on these plans, and put the ship back on the sales market.

“We are doing everything we can to prevent the ship from being sold for scrap,” The Roundtable spokesman said.

The veteran Astoria started her late 2018 operations for Cruise and Maritime Voyages at the end of August and made history by becoming the largest cruise ship to have ever sailed from the Port of Poole as well as the first CMV call at the Dorset port.

Now in her 70th year having originally been built in 1948 as Swedish America Lines’ Stockholm, the ship was made famous by her 25 July 1956 collision with the Andrea Doria which sent the Italian liner to the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Since heavily rebuilt from the hull upwards, the 160m, 550-passenger Astoria arrived at Poole’s South Quay in ballast from Le Havre on 31 August 2018 and sailed fully-booked that afternoon to view the Bournemouth Air Show from Poole Bay before heading back to Northern France.

Astoria will make several autumn 2018 and spring/summer 2019 cruises from Poole which would not have been possible until the completion of the £10million South Quay earlier this year which can handle vessels up to 200m in length. Another possible first for Poole occurred three days later when two cruise ships were in port on the same day, the 98-passenger Corinthian joining Astoria on 3 September. Kevin Mitchell

Step onto MV Astoria, and you are transported to the vintage age of ocean cruising . The historic vessel dates to its launch in 1946, making it the second-oldest cruise ship in service.

Astoria’s unique and rich sailing heritage makes it of special interest to cruisers who have a particular fondness for maritime history. The ship was initially known as the Stockholm when it launched more than seven decades ago. In July 1956, the ship collided with the Andrea Doria — causing that ship to capsize and sink — and killed more than 50 people in an infamous tragedy.

Since then, Astoria has been used as a cruise ship by various companies around the world. In 1994, it received a complete overhaul, and Astoria entered service with Cruise & Maritime Voyages in 2015.

After this year, though, its prospects look murky at best. CMV says it won’t be using the ship beyond the 2020 sailing season, and the last scheduled voyage is in October on a Norway and Northern Lights cruise. You’ll have to act fast if you are interested in booking a cruise on MV Astoria to grab a little piece of history for yourself.

Cruise Addicts was onboard during the cruise line’s inaugural itinerary in the Sea of Cortez, and this voyage offered the chance to visit some small ports in Mexico, some that were excited to welcome their first cruisers in 10 years.

MV Astoria carries up to 550 passengers, so you are treated to a more intimate experience than you get on the latest and greatest mega-ships. The emphasis is on having a romantic and relaxing cruise, visiting exotic destinations away from the masses.

While the ship offers a certain romance and charm, it comes with limitations, as well. There isn’t much to do on sea days other than the usual trivia contests, enrichment talks from guest speakers, and darts or cornhole (bean bag toss) competitions.

The pool is small and was too cold to enjoy in January, even in Mexico. The pool deck also doesn’t include loungers, only tables with chairs, so this winter itinerary was not for those looking to bask in the sunshine on the open sea .

The heating and cooling systems fluctuated on the older ship constantly, so it wasn’t strange to see passengers bringing blankets to lectures to stay warm.

But we did enjoy the service. With a high staff-to-passenger ratio, there was always a friendly crew member nearby to assist with anything you needed. The nightly entertainment was quite impressive, with staff members pulling double duty hosting and singing.

Dancers and specialty acts (opera, mariachi bands, musical revues and jazz nights) rounded out the array of options. The food was hit or miss in the Lotus Buffet, but the Olissipo Restaurant constantly offered solid and satisfying meals. We’d recommend taking breakfast in the main restaurant over the buffet (the food is the same, but the presentation and service ranks far higher in the restaurant.

Astoria’s traditional wraparound walkway on the Promenade Deck (Deck 5) is a popular outdoor space and offers passengers a great place to take a stroll in the morning or after dinner. It’s also a preferred place to lean on the rail to take in spectacular views of the ocean and sunsets.

The ship also offers a small fitness center, spa (although book your appointments early as the schedule filled up before we were even onboard), beauty salon, steam room, sauna, an auditorium with movie screenings, a 53-seat night club and a casino.

There is a wide selection of stateroom options, including twin rooms, doubles, junior suites, balcony suites and more – all with their own distinct designs. Although some cabins are on the small side, all of them include a full bathtub with shower head.

We visited La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalía, and Guaymas on our voyage.

In La Paz, we strolled the Malecón, a vibrant and busy seaside walkway lined with public art, playgrounds, dozens of restaurants and shops. Afterward, we experienced the natural beauty of La Paz’s Balandra Beach, with its clear blue waters, jutting cliffs, and mushroom rock, a unique natural formation that attracts photographers and Instagrammers alike.

Santa Rosalía, although not visited by a cruise ship in more than a decade, pulled out all the stops for our day in port. The town’s history as a copper mining site founded by the French company El Boleo, creates a mishmash of Mexican and European influence including a famous (and delicious) bakery, a church (Iglesia de Santa Barbara) that some say was designed by Gustave Eiffel and a mining history museum. Yet, the overall feel was that of an old wild west town complete with charming residents eager to share their heritage.

Loreto packed the most punch for a port stop – snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking, whale watching, and horseback riding are all available activities. There’s also a beautiful downtown that caters to pedestrians lined with shops and restaurants — don’t miss the most authentic tacos at El Rey Del Taco. If you still have time, take the scenic drive up to the San Javier Mission to step back in time and learn about Jesuit history.

While in port in Guaymas, we took a bus to San Carlos where we enjoyed a small boat ride around the bay and reveled in a pod of dolphins that playfully splashed in our wake.

A mix of popular ports and rarely visited destinations makes Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ new Sea of Cortez itinerary truly special.

MV Astoria is definitely not flashy. The ship is best suited for well-traveled cruisers looking for a relaxing voyage that harkens back to the glory days of traditional ocean liners. Don’t expect a bellyflop contest or decadent, mile-long buffet tables.

The city’s excellent public transportation system ensures easy access to various points of interest. For people who love to walk and explore cities, the location where the ships dock is close enough to much of the city center by foot, starting off with a lovely walk over the iconic Erasmus Bridge (weather permitting of course).

Rotterdam serves as both a starting point and a port of call for many cruise itineraries. Passengers can embark on cruises to various destinations, including the Baltic Sea, Norwegian fjords, British Isles, Mediterranean, and beyond. “Port of Rotterdam” is an industrial facility and is NOT where your cruise will be! Cruise ships dock at the “Cruise Terminal Rotterdam”. If you’re looking for the cruise ship on a map do NOT look for “The Port of Rotterdam” – you’ll be in the wrong place.

How far is Rotterdam city center from the cruise port?

Walking distance from the part of Rotterdam to the city center (Blaak) where Markthal and the Cube Houses are is approximately 30 minutes by foot (1.5 miles / 2.5km). Alternatively, the Metro station just outside of the cruise ship will get you to the same location in just 10 minutes. When you exit the ship, go left towards Wilhelminaplein metro station.

The Rotterdam Cruise Port is well-connected to the city’s public transportation network. Passengers can easily access taxis, public buses, and the nearby Rotterdam Central Station (Or Rotterdam Blaak, the actual city center), which provides connections to other parts of the city and the wider Netherlands. Additionally, the port offers ample parking facilities for passengers who choose to arrive by car.

The most convenient method to discover the city with public transportation is to make use of the Metro station (Whileminaplien) just a short walking distance from the ships. 

How far is the train station in Rotterdam from the cruise port? Can you walk to Rotterdam Central Station from the Rotterdam Cruise Port?

Yes, it’s possible with a 45-minute walk (about 2 miles away), however, the Metro goes directly to Central Station which may be a better option for people with more limited time or mobility issues.

How to get from rotterdam cruise port to amsterdam.

Getting to Amsterdam from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal is relatively simple using public transportation. However some people may choose a private transportation service, which can be quite expensive.

The train travel time is about 40 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal Station and tickets are available at a ticket counter or via kiosk. The trains are almost all direct without any changes and will end in the city center of Amsterdam.

Schiphol Airport is a close train ride from Centraal Station and getting there is relatively simple UNLESS you are traveling with a lot of luggage, then making use of the cruise line shuttle or private taxi is best.

Euromast is an iconic observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Standing at 185 meters (607 feet) tall, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The tower features two observation decks accessible by high-speed elevators. The lower deck, situated at 92 meters (302 feet), provides a wide view of Rotterdam, while the upper deck, located at 112 meters (367 feet), offers an even more extensive panorama. Gouda is famous for its cheese market, which has been held in the city’s central square for centuries. Visitors can witness the traditional cheese weighing and trading ceremonies that have been carried out since the Middle Ages. Gouda cheese itself is internationally renowned for its distinctive taste and creamy texture. The cheese market operates from 10am until 12.30pm every Thursday from April until September . The evolution of heritage: A first look at Holland America's new Rotterdam cruise ship

Tradition has always been at the forefront for Holland America Line , a company with roots that reach as far back as 1873, when the then-named Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Dutch-American Steamship Company) ferried passengers back and forth between Rotterdam and New York City.

HAL's first ship was Rotterdam; since the line began operations, it has just about always had a vessel with that name in its fleet.

In November, I sailed on the line's newest ship -- the seventh to bear the name for Holland America. With its modern take on passenger cruising, it's a far cry from the original Rotterdam -- and from many other Holland America ships -- but it still finds plenty of ways to pay homage to its predecessors while innovating in ways that both retain what matters to its stalwart passenger base and make space for new generations of cruisers without being too flashy.

Dining and drinks

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Holland America's cuisine is seriously underrated.

Whether you're eating in an added-fee specialty restaurant, grabbing a meal in the included main dining room or snagging a snack from the cafe, the quality and presentation of the food on HAL's ships are consistently superb. It's one of the few cruise lines that doesn't require passengers to pay extra in order to enjoy a truly delicious or fancy meal.

The complimentary two-deck dining room is open daily for breakfast, lunch (on sea days) and dinner. Apart from a few fun lighting fixtures, the space is fairly neutral and nondescript, leaving all eyes on the food itself, and it doesn't disappoint.

I thoroughly enjoyed my French onion soup, Caesar salad and salmon with capers and dill. The menu offers several more exciting selections, too, some of which incorporate port-sourced ingredients. There are also several options for vegetarians and cruisers who can't eat dairy or gluten.

Among the other complimentary dining outposts are the Lido Market buffet, which is crew-served and open for all meals with an astounding variety of options; the Grand Dutch Cafe, which offers out-of-this-world grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and pea soup, plus complimentary coffee and extra-fee alcohol and prepackaged Dutch candy and pastries; and New York Deli and Pizza, overlooking the main pool.

Unfortunately, my slice of pizza looked (and tasted) like it had been under a heat lamp for hours. (It was the only subpar dining experience I had on the entire sailing, but other passengers I spoke with said their experience was fantastic.) Room service is available 24 hours a day, and it's also free, with the exception of select items that are noted on the menu.

Pinnacle Grill, the ship's added-cost steakhouse, is a favorite of Holland America fans, and it's one of the most dress-up-worthy venues on board.

Designed for carnivores, the menu does offer a couple of vegetarian choices, but the star of the show is the meat. I drooled over the candied bacon appetizer — designed by chef David Burke and served on a clothesline -- which was so good one of my travel companions joked he'd be ordering it again for dessert.

My 7-ounce filet mignon arrived cooked to perfection, along with sauces and shareable sides like asparagus, lobster macaroni and cheese and roasted baby beets with blue cheese. Anyone looking for something more substantial will be pleased to find that a 36-ounce tomahawk steak is also available to order.

Rudi's Sel de Mer is an upscale for-fee restaurant that focuses on fish and seafood, but steak, duck and lamb also make an appearance on the menu, as well as a few vegetarian selections. You can't go wrong with the jumbo Alaskan crab legs, which come cracked and ready to eat with a side of drawn butter.

For dessert, I highly recommend Rudi's Face to Face Chocolate, which consists of fruit and chocolate arranged on a plate in one of chef Rudi Sodamin's signature Food Faces designs.

Tamarind, the added-fee Asian restaurant that shares real estate with Nami Sushi, is located at the very aft of the ship. I found it difficult to access initially, but it's a stunning, elegant space with an interesting list of dishes such as a satay sampler with Malaysian, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese small bites; cashew barramundi with red Thai curry; wasabi- and soy-crusted beef tenderloin; and Mongolian barbecue lamb chops.

I absolutely loved the spicy dan dan noodles with a side of steamed jasmine rice.

Also worth noting are Canaletto, an Italian restaurant that takes up residence at the Lido Market at night and levies a supplemental charge, and the Club Orange dining room, which is free to passengers who are booked in suites. Cruisers not booked in suites are able to pay for access to Club Orange and a slew of other perks.

As with most ships, Rotterdam has a large number of bars, but a few stand out.

The most impressive is the Half Moon Bar, which is new to the fleet and features a menu that's a mix of science and history. In addition to wine and beer, this watering hole -- located where the Blend wine mixing bar is found on other Pinnacle-class vessels -- boasts seven exclusive cocktails, each with its own story and ties to Holland America's maritime history.

My favorite? The Rotterdam VII: smoked gin and maraschino. It's a smokey drink that actually appeals to those of us who prefer sweeter tipples. Plus, the presentation is one you won't want to miss. (Be ready to snap a photo or take a video.)

My second-favorite beverage outpost is the Grand Dutch Cafe for its cappuccinos and nibbles as much as its mixed drinks. The former are fabulous, but if you're looking for a sugar rush, you'll also want to try the Dutch take on an Aperol spritz -- De Kuyper Oranje Bitter mixed with Sprite. Be warned: it's over-the-top sweet, but it pairs perfectly with one of the cafe's complimentary pastries.

For those seeking some quiet time reading, playing board games, doing puzzles or simply gazing at the sea, head to the Crow's Nest. The lounge's Explorations Cafe ensures you won't have to go far to grab a cozy coffee or tea, but this location deserves a shout simply because it's the only place on board where I was able to find my favorite Dutch treat, stroopwafels.

Then there's the Sea View Bar, which offers standard poolside drinks near the adults-only Sea View Pool. The starboard (right, when facing the front of the ship) side of the area is dedicated to smokers, which is a turnoff, but otherwise, there are comfy seats, twin hot tubs and, of course, the pool itself, which is backlit by color-changing mood lighting at night and complemented by breathtaking vistas of the ship's wake by day.

Below the suite level, cabins on Rotterdam comprise the usual categories: insides, outsides and balconies all with neutral, subdued color schemes that are almost exclusively white, cream, brown and tan with light woods. The only pops of black, slate gray and light blue come from a few throw pillows, the bed runner and curtains (in oceanview and balcony cabins). The houndstooth carpet pattern also stands out.

Even the most standard staterooms are outfitted with touches many mainstream lines don't bother to incorporate, such as glass showers and shaving bars in the bathrooms; shoeshine baskets and tie racks in the closets; and USB charging ports near the beds in the main cabin, as well as DVD players to go along with the interactive televisions.There's also an impressive selection of free movie titles from which to choose.

Makeup-lovers will appreciate enhanced lighting near each cabin vanity, as well as standalone makeup mirrors, which can be found in the drawers alongside a hairdryer.

Passengers looking for more high-end digs will appreciate Rotterdam's selection of suites, which include Vista Suites (basically a slightly larger balcony cabin), Signature Suites (with a murphy bed, dual-sink vanity and full-size whirlpool bath) and Neptune Suites (large sitting area, Neptune Lounge access and a private concierge in addition to Signature Suite amenities).

All are elegantly appointed and offer a bit more space than standard cabins.

All cruisers booked in Neptune Suite accommodations have complimentary Club Orange access, entitling them to meals in the exclusive Club Orange dining room, as well as other perks like priority embarkation and disembarkation. Passengers not booked in suites are able to join Club Orange by paying for those extras.

Forty cabins across several categories, including suites, are tailored for accessibility. Of those 40, 13 are ambulatory accessible for passengers who use canes or walkers. The rest are fully accessible for cruisers with wheelchairs or scooters; they are equipped with roll-in showers and other accommodations .

Additionally, the ship provides 12 cabins for solo travelers. All are found in a cluster at the front of Deck 12 (the Main Deck) and are fairly small.

Entertainment

Entertainment on Holland America ships is generally more subdued than what you might expect when sailing with some other lines, but that doesn't mean it's boring.

New to the fleet with Rotterdam's debut is "Origin Story," a high-tech, live-hosted documentary-style show that chronicles HAL's history -- from the original Rotterdam through the pandemic-related shutdown of 2020 -- in a way that will leave you wanting to see it more than once. (Bring tissues.)

The World Stage, where "Origin Story" is shown, serves as the ship's main theater and also plays host to dance performances and doo-wop groups, among other nightly shows.

A highlight of the onboard entertainment scene is Music Walk, a promenade dotted with four performance venues that house different musical experiences and other offerings, allowing passengers to find something that caters to their specific tastes.

The Rolling Stone Rock Room features a live band that plays nightly rock tunes, while B.B. King's Blues Club puts the focus on bluesy hits and comedic acts.

Billboard Onboard, which also serves as the home base for daily trivia competitions, pits dueling pianists against one another for decade-specific tunes, Hot 100 songs and even requests.

Lincoln Center Stage spotlights instrumental performances, covering genres like classical, Latin and French. I was surprised to see that some of the nighttime venues had people dancing as late as 1 a.m.

Some of the other options for fun-seeking travelers include casino play, poolside movies, afternoon tea, pickleball, board games, basketball shooting competitions, spa seminars, dance and mixology classes and wine tastings.

Public areas

Rotterdam's public spaces are elegantly designed and feature plenty of nooks and crannies for relaxing, finding some quiet time or grabbing a drink. The ship was at less than 40% capacity when I sailed, so I can't speak to how crowded it might feel when it's full, but I had no trouble escaping for a few quiet moments now and then.

Some of the notable public areas include the Greenhouse Spa and Salon, where passengers can receive a variety of for-fee treatments like massages and manicures, have their hair done or check out the thermal suite; the fitness center (which is equipped with several cardio and weight machines, as well as free weights and studio space for added-cost yoga and spin classes); the top-deck jogging track for fresh-air laps; and the onboard shops, selling everything from HAL logo wear and duty-free items to toiletries you might have forgotten to pack.

The vessel's main pool is the Lido Pool on Deck 9. Thankfully, it lacks bright, kitschy, tropical decor that seems to be synonymous with cruise ships and, instead, boasts plenty of loungers, a retractable roof to allow swimming in any kind of weather, three hot tubs and easy access to bar service, gelato and the buffet, as well as the deli and pizzeria, which is one deck above.

The Sea View Pool, also on Deck 9, is the adults-only pool. There, the focus is on the passing scenery and the ship's wake. There are also two hot tubs, and elegant lantern lighting is reminiscent of an upscale beach club.

New additions

As the third ship in Holland America's Pinnacle Class, Rotterdam is the product of evolution. It's worlds away from some of the line's oldest vessels, yet still the same in all the ways that matter: comfort, service, food, tradition, serenity and understated elegance.

New on Rotterdam are the previously mentioned Half Moon Bar; the onboard library, which gives me serious Barnes & Noble vibes and is fully stocked with sections for travel, young adult, mystery, poetry, fiction and science fiction, among others; and the onboard art collection, comprising 2,500 intriguing and eye-catching pieces from artists around the world.

With Rotterdam and the other vessels in the Pinnacle Class, Holland America has managed to please its most loyal demographic while offering plenty to keep younger cruisers satisfied and entertained. Although it doesn't attract large numbers of children, it's absolutely suitable for multigenerational family trips.

Service is great across the board; cabins are well-appointed, elegant and comfortable; and the food in just about every eatery is simply excellent.

Astoria is a Columbia River cruise port (also seaport) and town in Oregon USA (Clatsop County) with a population of around 10,000. The town is surrounded by mountains, forests, sea (Pacific Ocean) and the rivers Columbia and Lower Willamette.

The extraordinary attractions of the area include Mount Hood, Crater Lake National Park, and Columbia River Gorge. Visitors can explore the waterfront on restored Riverfront Trolley or take in area's history at the Columbia River Maritime Museum and some other interesting museums including 1885 Flavel House Museum. There are several historical sites commemorating the Old West's heritage, such as the Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Astoria Column, which is towering above the city.

Fort Clatsop was built during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. At Fort Clatsop National Historic Park tourists can stand in Lewis and Clark's footsteps or visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Ilwaco in order to hear the incredible story of the Expedition, and marvel at the scenic view of the Pacific.
