The only Outer Banks ATV Tour!!

This guided tour is two trips in one. Just getting to the “Penny Hill ” riding area is an adventure in itself! Four-wheel 5 miles up the coast, navigating deep ruts and soft sand to arrive at our company’s private 40 acres of land, with acres of trails and steep drop-ins on the second largest “living ” sand dune on the East coast.

This land has been specifically groomed for ATV riding, and offers fun for beginners and avid ATV owners alike!

Wild horses are often seen on the trip out to the riding area or on our beautiful land! After being briefed on ATV safety and driving techniques, you and your guide will snake through our 40 acres of trails and climb to the top of “Penny’s Hill” – the view alone is breathtaking.

Bring your camera, or rent one of our Go-Pros to capture this unique experience.   You will ride the ATVS for an hour of this 2 hr trip, which in our experience is more than enough. The other hour is almost like a short horse safari just to reach the “penny hill” riding area.   Drivers must be at least 21 yrs old and children must be at least 10 yrs to ride.

Our fleet of vehicles consist of 2016 Yamaha Wolverines , Polaris RZRS, and Kawasaki TERX, all of which are two-seaters utv-style machines.

ADV Touring By Region: Best Routes In Eastern United States

ADV Touring By Region: Best Routes In Eastern United States

If you’re looking for some of the top adventure riding areas in America, the eastern side of the country is filled with amazing landscapes that are sometimes overlooked, or downright not known about.

Due to its natural topography, the eastern United States is full of mountains and forest land. You just have to know where to look.

In this post, we’ll explore some of the best adventure routes on the east coast. If you’re on the hardcore side of adventure motorcyclists, then you owe it to yourself to give the  Backcountry Discovery Routes across the northeast (and across the whole United States) a try.

In all, the BDR covers over 1300 miles, taking you from New York to New Hampshire, Vermont to Maine. It even takes you to Canada’s doorstep before calling it quits.

Many of the routes listed below are from the BDR, but there are far too many to list here. We’ve also sprinkled in a few options not on the BDR to add a little variety.

Nonetheless, if you’re looking to get away on an Adventure Touring ride in the Eastern United States, these are just a few of the great options.

Hancock, NY to Andes, NY

What better way to start than with the tipping-off point for the North East BDR? This 135-mile section is the first leg of a nearly 1300-mile journey that takes you nearly to Canada.

It’s not a loop, so take that into consideration, but there are many turnoffs that aren’t an official part of the route that you can take to turn this into a loop and return back to your starting point of Hancock, New York. As for the route itself, we’ll point you to the BDR description:

Make your way to where the east and west branches of the Delaware River converge in the historic village of Hancock, New York — a motorcycle-friendly town, a sportsman’s paradise and a perfect place to start the NEBDR adventure.

Cross over the West Branch of the Delaware just a mile from the center of Hancock and get ready to warm up your dirt skills on the shady O&W Road through rural Wayne County Pennsylvania. Adventure starts to ramp up as you hit River Road, a rugged seasonal track that hugs a steep drop-off high above the Delaware River. Cross back over to New York into Callicoon for miles of enjoyable dirt and gravel roads that traverse through forests and farmland and crisscross the East Branch of the Delaware several times. You’ll pass through your first of many covered bridges on the NEBDR in Downsville and then make your way up and around the majestic Pepacton Reservoir on a thrilling stretch of twisty tarmac. Your arrival into Andes includes seasonal dirt roads and outstanding mountain views. You are now on the western edge of the Catskills and Andes is the quintessential Catskill town.

Take a quick ride two miles east from the center of town on Route 28 to the Palmer Hill lookout and experience a panoramic view of the mountains that make up the 600,000-acre Catskill Forest Preserve — classified as Forever Wild Land in the New York State Constitution. Spend the night in Andes and enjoy some local hard cider and culinary treats at Wayside Cider or rub shoulders with the locals at the bar/restaurant in the historic Andes Hotel. Supplies and fuel can be had at the General Store on Main Street or the Tremperskill Country Store about 5 miles outside of the village down CR1.

Michaux Forest in Pennsylvania

Located west of Gettysburg, home of the bloodiest battle fought on U.S. soil (July 1-3, 1863), Michaux State Forest (pronounced Mee-shoh) consists of more than 85,500 acres throughout Adam, Cumberland, and Franklin counties.

Some of the gravel fire roads have you climbing to 4500 feet above sea level, providing gorgeous overlooks of the counties below.

You can easily piece together 100 miles of riding for a day. And for the more adventurous rider, 35 miles of ATV trails run throughout the forests that will more than challenge any skillset–especially those on larger adventure tourers.

Named after the 18th Century French botanist Andre Michaux, and home to the first forestry school Mont Alto, Michaux Forest has campsites throughout, which are a first-come, first-serve basis. The deeper, and steeper, you get, the more secluded the riding becomes.

Two highlights during the rides are Long Pine Reservoir and Laurel Lake. Just keep an eye out for hikers; 37 miles of the Appalachian trail snakes through Michaux State Forest. For additional information, here’s a Michaux State Forest map .

Readsboro, VT to Barnard, VT

Vermont doesn’t get enough love from motorcyclists, so this is our attempt to bring some deserved attention to the Green Mountain State.

A beautiful part of the country whether you’re into adventure riding or not, Vermont doesn’t get the fanfare of more popular tourist attractions, but that’s what makes it great.

And, as the name Green Mountain State implies, Vermont is full of landscapes any adventure rider would love to explore.

On this 178-mile leg of the NorthEast BDR, you’ll experience a little slice of everything Vermont has to offer. That includes some technical riding towards the end. If an easier route is what you’d prefer, there are work-arounds for that. Here’s the official description from the BDR:

You are now in the Green Mountain State. Are you ready to experience beautiful pastoral settings, historic mountain roads and architecture dating back to the Revolutionary War? We hope so! Vermonters have a generally laid-back attitude, a strong passion for their home state and are eager to share that passion with friendly and respectful visitors. The roads you will be using to pass through Vermont are beautiful, and in most cases, originally designed for human and animal transport. They are small and rudimentary and houses are often placed within feet of the road. Many of these roads double as cattle crossings and hiking trails, so safe riding is imperative.

After your introduction to Class 4 roads at the end of Section 3, stop into the Readsboro General Store to fuel up your body and your bike. From there the route settles into a patchwork of forest roads meandering through the lower Green Mountain National Forest. The town of Grafton is a wonderful place to stop, spend the night at the inn, or have lunch at the general store.

Tip: Don’t miss out on Vermont’s general stores, they are all unique and interesting.

There are technical riding bits dispersed throughout this section but after the town of Danby, there are quite a few challenging Class 4 roads. If you find you’re not quite up for it, the GPS tracks include easier go-arounds for the more difficult Class 4 roads. Your last gnarly stretch of this section leads you to the town of Barnard where you can gas up and grab supplies at the General Store. There’s camping at Silver Lake State Park and several B&Bs in town or alternatively the town of Woodstock is only 10 miles away.

Bald Eagle State Forest in Pennsylvania

The ADV riding in and around Bald Eagle State Forest is a local favorite and a hidden gem. So, apologies in advance to the locals if we’re letting the secret out, but the riding here is too good not to share.

Named for the famous Native American, Chief Bald Eagle, Bald Eagle State Forest is spread across nearly 194,000 acres in Snyder, Union, Centre, Mifflin, and Clinton counties west of State College, home of Penn State University.

About 340 miles of roads exist throughout Bald Eagle State Forest, with a bulk of them unpaved and reaching as high as 2,300 feet above sea level.

There are loads of dual-sport motorcycle trails, and some require expert-level ability due to sharp rocks and giant mud holes.

Three that impress over and over are the trails running through the Seven Mountains Region, over Shade Mountain, and near Poe Paddy State Park.

For additional information, here’s a Bald Eagle State Park map .

Woodsville, NH to Gorham, NH

The longest single leg of the NorthEast BDR, this ride through New Hampshire spans 231 miles. The ride itself isn’t particularly challenging, but what it lacks in difficulty it more than makes up for in history and scenery.

And don’t be mistaken; these roads are still a massive amount of fun. Again, here’s the official description from the BDR:

Just a few miles up a rural dirt road from Woodsville and after crossing a long, covered bridge, you’ll arrive at the Brick Store in Bath. The Brick Store is the oldest operating general store in the United States, established in 1791. Known for excellent fudge, smoked products, and a fine deli, this is a great place for take-out breakfast and lunch. The owner, Scott, is an avid motorcyclist so be sure to tell him we sent you.

Section 6 winds through picturesque dirt roads from the western border towards the east, passing through woodlands and farm fields, as well as some horse properties. Crossing over Interstate 93, the route takes Sandwich Notch Road from Thornton to Sandwich, built in 1801 for the farming community that inhabited the area. The road is now a single-lane dirt road that is great fun to ride, but remember that it is two-way traffic at all times. There’s a must stop at a self-service ice cream and cheese shop, the Sandwich Creamery, tucked down a dirt road well off the beaten track. Our favorite flavor was Dirt Road – go figure. Soon after you’ll find the magnificent view of Mount Chocorua and Lake Chocorua.

Turning north, the route takes the Kancamagus Highway for about ten miles. The highway is named after Chief Kancamagus, “The Fearless One,” of the Panacook tribe. Scenery of the Swift River and mountains is spectacular before turning on to Bear Notch Road. Forest service roads in the Bartlett Experimental Forest break up the ride on more dirt before getting through Franconia Notch on NH Route 302. After passing by the Mount Washington Hotel, the route takes Jefferson Notch Road around the base of Mount Washington. You’ll soon come to appreciate any road referred to as a “notch’ in New Hampshire.

The White Mountains, and especially Mount Washington, are a spectacular sight and the highlight of the NEBDR. The Mt. Washington Auto Road is not to be missed – it’s a 7-mile tar and dirt road up to the summit at 6,288 feet. The weather observatory is manned 365 days a year and has recorded some of the highest winds on the planet – 231 mph. Clear days offer amazing 360-degree views for a hundred miles. There’s a restaurant and museum at the summit. Nearby Gorham is the perfect White Mountain town to stay the night. If you weren’t able to make it up Mt. Washington when you arrived into town, you can give it a fresh go the next morning.

As you can see, the eastern United States offers a lot of great riding for the adventure touring rider . And we’ve only just scratched the surface of what’s out there, too.

Call us greedy, but we purposely didn’t reveal more routes because there are still some we want to keep to ourselves!

Nonetheless, that’s the beauty of adventure touring; you’re free and able to find new routes of your own. The eastern US is full of them.

Top 10 Most Loved ATV Destinations for Memorable Off-Roading Tours in the USA

Top 10 Most Loved ATV Destinations for Memorable Off-Roading Tours in the USA

ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) are becoming increasingly popular among tourists, especially those who want to explore America's beautiful outdoors. An ATV is a four-wheel motor vehicle that uses large tires to provide stability when traversing off-road terrain. The beauty of ATVs is that you can use them on both paved and unpaved roads, so you don't have to worry about being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no way out. First, however, you must choose the right vehicle for your needs and ensure you're prepared before heading out into unknown territory.

Choose an Ideal ATV for an Uninterrupted Tour

Choosing the right ATV is one of the most important parts of any off-roading trip. You want to ensure that you pick an ATV that suits your terrain, weather conditions, and distance.

Before leaving, you must check out the accessories on your ATV, such as side mirrors, windshield wipers, or even a spare tire. These can be very handy if something goes wrong during your trip.

It's also a good idea to explore various ATV part brands and select a reputed company. This is because they will likely last longer than cheaper brands that break down easily after several thousand miles.

Most Loved ATV Destinations

Arizona is an ideal destination if you're looking for a great place to take your ATV. The state capital is Phoenix, and the area has many trails.

You can access many scenic ATV trails from the city of Scottsdale. One such trail is called "The Dragon," which was voted one of the world's best motorbike and ATV trails by BBC News in 2016, so it's worth checking out.

2. California

There are some great ATV trails in California that most people don't know about. Here are some of the best ones:

  • The Bitter Creek National Recreation Trail
  • The Owens River Gorge Trail
  • The Diamond Mountains Motor Motocross Park (MMMP) Trails are located in Lake Havasu City.

You can find these and others on Google Maps or by using an app such as All-Terrain Vehicle GPS Navigation System.

3. Colorado

Colorado is home to some of the best off-roading in the US. Its mountains and deserts provide a stunning backdrop for ATV tours, and its public lands offer plenty of opportunities for adventure. So if you're looking for an adrenaline rush, off-roading in Colorado is sure to deliver.

Colorado has a lot of public lands that are great for off-roading, but there are not many places where you can rent an ATV or UTV to go on your tour. However, you can still explore on your own by renting from one of the local ATV rentals.

Florida is a great place to go off-roading. It's also a great place to go off-roading with your family, friends, or dog. It may be the country's best place for all three groups to get together for action-packed fun.

Many people don't realize that Florida has more than just beaches and theme parks. Hundreds of miles of trails throughout the state will take you across its panhandle from one side of Florida. And these aren't just dusty old dirt roads; they're some of the best ATV trails in America.

With its rugged trails, Maine is a great place to go off-roading. Plenty of opportunities for beginners and experts to go off the beaten path. Some areas are better suited for beginners, while others will challenge even the most experienced drivers. In addition to offering a variety of terrain types and trail styles, Maine also has a range of ATV rental services available. So whether you're looking for a thrill or just want your vehicle for an afternoon, there's something here for everyone.

6. Michigan

Michigan is the home of the American Motorcycle Association and is known as the Motorcycle Capital of the World. It's also home to over 6,000 miles of off-road trails that go through forests, swamps, and open prairies. With its many lakes, rivers, streams, and rocky hills, it's not hard to see why so many people enjoy riding their bikes here. Michigan has hosted several major motorcycle rallies over the years, including its largest one, which draws more than half a million attendees yearly.

7. New Mexico

New Mexico is a state for off-road enthusiasts. It has some of the best ATV destinations in the country and some of the most scenic ATV trails.

  • The Sandia Crest Trail is one of them. This trail has everything: beautiful views, great scenery, challenging inclines and declines, and plenty of technical terrains.
  • Another great place to go off-roading is around Taos Mountain, about an hour's drive from Santa Fe, New Mexico. You can also reach it by taking Highway 550.

The main attraction here is the impressive rock formations tower over this area. They make for excellent pictures as well as fun riding spots.

Ohio is a great place to go ATVing. There are many great trails in Ohio, both on the east and west side of the state. Some of these include:

  • The Pine Creek Gorge Trail System: This trail network is located in Hocking Hills State Park and has 15 miles of off-road trails offering scenic views of rock formations, waterfalls, and other natural attractions.
  • Wayne National Forest: Located just south of Columbus, this expansive forest with over 100 miles of multi-use OHV trails provides access to many lakes, meadows, and ridges.

Texas is one of the best places to go off-roading in America. The mild climate, deep forests, and rugged backcountry make it a great destination for riders seeking an unforgettable experience.

There are many places you can go off-roading in Texas. Some of the most popular destinations include:

  • New Braunfels Canyon Off-Road Park: This park has several miles worth of trails and terrain ranging from hard-pack dirt roads to rocky hillsides. It also has areas where you can practice sand riding, which is great fun when done with friends. Plus, there are plenty of obstacles like bridges and rocks where you can show off how good your skills are on an ATV.
  • Texas Ranch Trail: This trail offers some amazing views and challenging trails for those who want more than just a smooth highway riding experience but still want a safe environment without too much risk involved.

Utah is one of the top ATV destinations in the country. Utah has a great place for off-road motorcycling with its stunning landscape and plentiful trails. In addition, there are plenty of amazing places to ride, including parks and clubs that cater specifically to ATVs.

  • Freedom Trail Off-Road Park: Located just outside Salt Lake City, this park offers a variety of activities, including guided tours through the Wasatch Mountains on an ATV or dirt bike.
  • Polaris Snowmobile Adventures: This company offers guided tours through some of Utah's most famous mountain ranges like the Uinta Mountains and Grand Tetons National Park in Wyoming.
  • Canyonlands ATV Tours: This tour company allows you to explore many different parts of Utah, including Dinosaurland and Zion National Park. On your own private tour, you can view amazing rock formations up close while riding alongside dinosaurs.

Welcome to Eastern United States

The east coast of the United States is where it all started in 1925... when a traveling salesman named Arthur Tauck designed a new kind of "vacation". We have grown by leaps and bounds since then with journeys now on all seven continents, but it is the east coast region that we hold close to our hearts. Enriching travel experiences exist in... the wilderness of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park... aboard a Maine lobsterman's boat as he hauls in his catch... at a clambake on Cape Cod... and on our journeys that capture the kaleidoscope of fall colors throughout this entire region.

Ken burns american journeys, exclusive to tauck – telling the american story through ken burns american journeys.

Filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, America's premier storytellers, work alongside Tauck's team of tour architects to meticulously craft enriching travel experiences throughout the US. They bring to life the themes and stories from their award-winning documentary films, sharing exclusive insights into the people, places and events that shaped the history of the United States, taking guests' travel experiences to a deeper level. Together, we've created over 100 original film vignettes, developed new tours and Tauck Ken Burns Events, and enhanced existing special Events.

New York, New York

There's no other like it... discovering new york city with tauck.

On "The Hudson Valley," New York City is… seeing Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Chrysler and Empire State buildings… learning the story of the construction of a Rockefeller Center skyscraper right after the 1929 stock market crash as you view the city from 70 floors up… visiting the poignant National September 11 Memorial & Museum, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers… meeting a NYPD detective who shares insights on the tragedy of 9/11 and the recovery efforts that followed…

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Only on cape cod....

If you had to boil down "New England" into one place, it might be Cape Cod, extending from the Massachusetts mainland out into the Atlantic. Near the spot where the Pilgrims first landed, it's home to Cape Cod National Seashore, protecting dunes, beaches, marshes, ponds, historic lighthouses and wild cranberry bogs; Provincetown on the tip of the Cape, once a key whaling town, now world-renowned as an arts colony and major summer resort known simply as "P-Town;" and a delicious regional specialty plucked directly from local waters which you may know as "lobster," but locals call "lobstahh."

Boston, Massachusetts

Along the historic streets of boston.

History is indeed alive around every corner of Boston, Massachusetts, often called America's "cradle of liberty"… on green Boston Common, at the Old North Church and Faneuil Hall, along the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, in the diverse neighborhoods of the North End with ethnic flavors all their own, aboard "Old Ironsides" at the USS Constitution Museum… and at beloved Fenway Park, Major League Baseball's oldest stadium, home of the Red Sox since 1912…

Combine nature with adventure on a thriling ATV tour along Cozumel's wild east coast, which also includes a snorkeling and lunch.

You'll be transferred from a convenient meeting point near your cruise terminal or hotel to the "Other Side" of the island.

After a safety briefing, you'll mount your Honda 250cc semi-automatic ATV and head off along the coast, with your thumb on the throttle and the wind in your hair.

Enjoy over an hour riding along sand, dirt, beach and jungle, soaking up incredible views of dense forest, beaches, surf and the Caribbean Sea.

Children or anyone that prefers not to drive themselves can ride as a passenger on a double ATV.

And when the ride finishes there's still more excitement to come, as you're transported to a beach club back on the west coast of the island for a 30 minute guided snorkel tour.

Enjoy Cozumel's marvellous underwater world before finishing off the experience with a lip-smacking lunch of chicken or vegetarian fajitas.

Farmstands & Farm Tours in the San Francisco Bay Area

Living in the city, it's easy to forget where our food comes from. More often than not, we buy our food at the grocery store, shrink wrapped in plastic, sourced from some far-off part of the world.

Despite these modern challenges, the Bay Area is an incredibly food-driven city. Locals pride themselves on knowing a lot about food and caring for the source of their ingredients. "Grown locally" is one of the most prized labels on Bay Area menus and food markets. Eating local is increasingly taking this to a new level. New "urban farms" have popped up starting up in the Bay Area, converting unused residential and commercial land into lush gardens for growing food and raising small livestock.

Click through the arrows above to see some of the local farmstands and farms that you can visit in and around Silicon Valley. Some of these farms offer tours and all of them sell fresh, homegrown produce and hand-crafted food. All of these farms are kid-friendly and make a fun day trip for the whole family.

Several of these farms are located along California’s Highway 1 from Half Moon Bay, south to Watsonville so they make a good stop on any Highway 1 road trip.

Looking to incorporate more healthy, local foods into your daily life? Check out this list of weekly farmers markets in San Jose or Silicon Valley. Looking for other food-related outings and experiences? Check out this guide to foodie things to do in San Jose and Silicon Valley.

Know other farms that you we should add to the list?  Send me an email  or connect on Facebook, Twitter, or  Pinterest .

Pie Ranch, Pescadero

Pie Ranch is a working organic farm and farm stand on the San Mateo County coast, south of Pescadero. While they do sell locally baked fruit pies at the farm stand, they are named for the triangular shape of their 14-acre farm property. Pie Rach has a mission to inspire sustainable food production and food system education. Taylor Street Farm, San Jose

Taylor Street Farm grew out of a university project founder Zach Lewis was doing for his urban planning Masters thesis at San Jose State University. He was studying the growth of urban farming and a local developer offered to loan him a small, undeveloped parcel of land to see if he could start a farm on it.

Fast forward a few years and the Taylor Street Farm is a thriving one-acre urban farm at the intersection of Taylor Street and the 87 freeway. The farm is run by Lewis’ nonprofit Garden To Table, a food and farming education and food policy organization that helps neighbors set up community gardens and harvesting surplus fruit from urban fruit trees to donate it to local food banks and nutrition programs.

The farm stand is open every Saturday and you can pick up seasonal fresh produce and some local artisan food products.

The farm is dedicated to education, community, and leadership building. Executive Director Cayce Hill says, “It’s not about pounds of food produced, but rather, about the connections that are created among people and the leadership that emerges from the community.”

The farm stand is open every Saturday for you to pick up farm fresh produce and locally made foods. The farm also offers cooking classes (in English and Spanish), home gardening workshops, and volunteer experiences for all ages.

Northern California (8 Days)

The Northern California Itinerary is wonderful. It ranges from the big city, to the forest to the smaller bay communities. The accommodations were top notch. The meal choice venues were excellent. Our guide, Robert Lehua and driver Angel, were both so knowledgeable about the area. They were both so engaging. We would definitely recommend Trafalgar and hope to join them for more vacations.

San Francisco & Yosemite Express 3D/2N (From Los Angeles) Tour

San Francisco & Yosemite Express 3D/2N (From Los Angeles)

The tour was good, my personal preference would have been to spend more time in San Francisco, doing the iconic things like a trolley car ride and an Alcatraz tour, rather than the random stops along the way. Our tour guide was great - however, right at the end of the tour - when I reached my destination - it was not the hotel that I was informed it was going to be, and both the tour guide and the driver couldn't get out of there quick enough, so I felt stranded...luckily I had been following where we were headed on my phone's GPS, otherwise I would have been totally unprepared. That was quite disappointing...I was going to tip them both - but they literally disappeared so quickly I barely got a chance to even say goodbye. I was also disappointed, as the literature all said Yosemite park, but we didn't get there because it was winter...fair enough - but I wasn't the only one who didn't understand we weren't going there..and we felt a little deceived...my tour itinerary still said Yosemite park on it, so that is where I thought we were going....
