Southern Peaks Safaris is the standard for an international hunting experience. Ive been on a number of international hunts and whether it be Africa, Canada or New Zealand, all my guides have been exceptional. Sam and Shawnee's ability to tailer every hunt to the unique abilities of all their hunters is which sets them apart....

Alec & Krista Bussman

Hunting  in New Zealand had been a dream of mine since  I  started hunting as a kid. Southern Peaks Safaris provided my wife and me with a trip of a lifetime! From climbing the mountain side looking for stags and then running back down after fallow deer - there was never a dull moment! And then the hunting of the Tahr and Chamois in the mountains from the helicopter was an experience we'll remember forever!...

I have been hunting with Sam and Shawnee for two years now, and I will most certainly be back!  From the moment I arrived in NZ I felt like family.  They took care of everything and made sure my entire trip was enjoyable, start to finish! A hunt like no other

Welcome to leithen valley hunts.

For three generations, the Stewart family has protected and preserved the finest habitat for world-class trophy game animals in New Zealand. Our property provides the hunter with vast terrain and the space necessary for a fair chase trophy experience. Across over 40,000 acres of private land, our professional guides go out of their way to make your hunt one you will never forget. There is nothing that gets the adrenaline pumping more than the approach of a trophy animal, as you roar or grunt to get the ideal shot!

Red Stag, Fallow Buck, Tahr and Chamois were all introduced to New Zealand in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Allowed to roam freely over the rolling hills of Leithen Valley, they hug the edge of the beech forest in which they thrive. Known for their large, dark antlers and delicious meat, our trophy animals provide the ultimate hunting prize in one of the world’s most stunning places.

Homegrown hospitality

Our professional guides have extensive knowledge of the local area as well as a passion for hunting and a desire to make your hunt the experience of a lifetime! When you join Leithen Valley hunts you become family! And that’s not all. After an exhausting day claiming your trophy, we offer you the chance to relax and unwind in comfort, with great company, homecooked food and local beverages, in some of the best and most atmospheric locations New Zealand has to offer.

Stacey is known for his down-to-earth, professionally run hunting trips into the spectacular Southern Alps and surrounding hills. With hundreds of acres of private hunting blocks available as well as first-hand knowledge of free-range hunting areas throughout the south, clients trust Stacey to deliver epic hunts for trips of every size and budget.

Stacey Anderson LEAD GUIDE & OWNER

From a young age, hunting has been in the blood for Stacey. A childhood spent shooting possums and rabbits on the family farm with his older brothers and the family dog first sparked a passion for the sport that hasn’t dampened to this day.

In later years, his impressive skill for stalking and guiding led Stacey to some of the most sought after trophy hunting destinations. Stacey has led high-end hunting expeditions in Canada, where he lived for five years, as well as Switzerland, Austria, Turkey and Mongolia. In Pakistan and Tajikistan, Stacey hunted markhor. Here he tested his skills against one of the world’s most highly-prized trophy animals in one of the world’s most challenging destinations.

Stacey and Jen started New Zealand Hunting Safaris in 2008 after the realisation they had some of the most impressive trophy hunting in the world on their doorstep. Stacey’s considerable experience in understanding what it takes to lead world-class trophy hunting is balanced by his laid-back southern persona. Together with Jen’s knack for hospitality and home cooking, the company has become recognised as one of the best in New Zealand for serious trophy hunting.

Over the years Stacey and Jen have welcomed hundreds of hunters to the Hāwea lodge. Many have become friends, many return regularly, and to this very day, Stacey sees his guiding as so much more than a job, it is his passion.

Sam Beaufill LEAD GUIDE

Sam has been part of the New Zealand Hunting Safaris team for five years, and in that time, he has delivered some incredible hunting experiences out in the hills for our clients.

Sam is one of a small group of people who can claim they are a full-time hunting guide. As a professional guide, Sam spends his time between New Zealand and the northern hemisphere, sharing his vast knowledge and enthusiasm with every client he takes out into the hills.

For the last eight years, Sam has split his time between New Zealand and British Columbia and America, working on high-end guiding trips on both sides of the globe.

Hunting is not only a job for Sam it is also his big passion in life. It’s hard to ignore how much Sam enjoys what he does, and it seems the team from Stoney Creek saw precisely this when they asked him to become an ambassador. Sam is now a gear-tester for the hard-wearing Kiwi outdoor brand, and his knowledge of clothing and gear has become a great asset to us all.

Get away from it all and get into the backcountry. Our trips are more than trophy hunting, it’s about getting away from it all, clearing the head and sharing an unforgettable experience in nature with friends, family and our team.

WHERE WE HUNT: THE SECRET TO OUR SUCCESS

Throughout the south island's varied terrain, an incredible array of game animals are on offer..

From the foothills of the Southern Alps to the wild west coast or the lakes and valley of Central Otago, we offer access to an area renowned for an incredible diversity of animals. Not everyone has hunting on their back doorstep like we do and we want to share it. We have access to hunting areas from Milford Sound to Mt Cook with options for vehicle and helicopter access. Or if you prefer to venture in by foot, we’ll head off from our private lodge in Hāwea .

New Zealand Wapiti Elk Epic Safari Hunt Private Reserve

New Zealand Wapiti Elk Epic Safari Hunt Private Reserve

New Zealand Safaris Founded by New Zealand Hunting Outfitter and Guide Jim Gibson, he's spent a lifetime building personal relationships with private landowners to give you access to a hunting experience you’ll never forget. They are, in a word...spectacular. Thousands of acres, world class scenery filled high quality game. Located in Fairlie in central South Island, New Zealand Safaris primary hunting lodge, All Seasons Lodge, is within 5 to 30 minutes of our hunting properties…and 20 minutes to an hour to major New Zealand sightseeing attractions. In close proximity to so many sightseeing opportunities, we can help you tailor your hunting experience to include fun activities for family and non-hunters that will be truly memorable. We’ll pair you with an experienced local sightseeing guide to build your itinerary, allowing you to go at your own pace and see the sights relevant to you. New Zealand Safaris offers you one of the most diverse hunting experiences you will find on Earth. Everything from tropical coastlines, rugged mountain peaks and fertile river valleys cloaked in dense forests. Each environment providing some of the best free range wild game, and fair chase hunting to be found anywhere. Our specialty is genuine hunting safaris, game stalked on foot, ATV or 4x4 to access some of New Zealand’s most iconic private land. No resort style multi-group cramped lodges. Your hunt is yours alone.

This huge (up to 1,000lb) deer is the largest of the round-horned deer in the world, with antlers running 5×5 (10 points) and larger in New Zealand they are closely related to Red Stag. The best elk trophies often exceed fifty inches in length. New Zealand Safaris offers clients access to hunt on the elk property that is well known throughout all the New Zealand hunting outfitters. This large, privately owned estate has exceptional trophy elk and while on safari you will typically see between 6-15 trophy elk bulls that can range in score between 350-500+ S.C.I. inches both typical and non-typical. Because there are very low numbers of pure wapiti left in the wild in New Zealand, free-range hunting is extremely difficult and restricted to a few very remote areas in the rugged south west portion of the South Island where there is a ballot system in place. Elk hunting in New Zealand typically runs from late February through August. Since the elk rut (bugle) coincides with the red stag, fallow buck, and sika stag ruts many clients find it makes a nice addition to their New Zealand hunting safari. We believe in a genuine, personal experience for each guest, hunter, family or group guided professionally. Because our tours and hunts are on privately owned land we are unable to offer budget style no frills options. Our big game hunting packages start at $3500.00 and will be based on your local currency. New Zealand Safaris prides itself on high quality hunting experiences.

Sunrise at All Seasons Lodge

Fairlie, new zealand, ...a few things to know.

The pretty farming town of Fairlie marks the beginning of the Mackenzie Country. Just west of here, Burke Pass takes you into the high altitude, tussock-covered expanses that characterise the region.

While you're in town and looking for local non-hunting things to do, a visit to the Fairlie Heritage Museum is recommended. It houses one of the biggest vintage wagon and carriage collections in the country. You may like to follow this up with a carriage ride if you're traveling with a spouse or family around Fairlie township. At lunch time, the locals recommend you try a salmon and bacon pie at the award-winning Lieber Bakehouse.

In winter (June - September), Fairlie is a base for skiing at Mt Dobson (affectionately known as 'Dobo') and Roundhill.

During warmer months, the recently created Lake Opuha is popular for boating and fishing; you can also take a l lama trek around the lake. Hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, trout fishing and farm tours are other popular activities.

The Raincliff Historic Reserve is the place to see Maori rock art, and famously scenic Lake Tekapo is just a 25 minute drive away.

Gary Herbert's New Zealand Hunting

Gary Herbert's New Zealand Hunting

Guide & outfitter.

Gary12 3738

Gary Herbert is your host, outfitter, guide and owner of New Zealand Mountain Hunting Limited. Gary was first introduced to the guiding industry in 1994 where he was employed by a New Zealand outfitting company as a packer/guide. In November 1995 and at the age of 20 he formed the company, New Zealand Mountain Hunting Limited. Gary is a member of the New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides Association and in conjunction with his hunting operation in New Zealand, has guided hunters through out the South Pacific, North America, Asia, Europe and England.

Gary Herbert’s New Zealand Hunting has the reputation for providing international trophy hunters some of the best hunting opportunities throughout New Zealand.

“We own our own hunting area in the heart of the Southern Alps, located in one of the best areas in New Zealand for Red Stag, Tahr, Chamois, Fallow and Wapiti. In conjunction with our own ranch we also lease three other ranches. These ranches have high numbers of resident Stag, Whitetail and Fallow. By having four ranches to hunt on we are not limited like most other New Zealand outfitting companies to only being able to hunt on one property. This means we are able to be more selective in the animals we harvest, hence the reason why our trophy quality is so high.”

“Our guides are some of the most experienced hunters in the South Pacific. They work together as a team to increase your chances of finding that great trophy. During our off season (mid-August to December) most of our guides travel to North America to guide hunters in the States and British Colombia.”

Hunting to me is more than a business, it’s my life. If it’s not the hunting season in New Zealand, I’m usually overseas guiding hunters for other companies, hunting for myself or arranging hunts for our next season.

I’ve been on both sides of the “fence” as the guide and client and I know what it feels like to be misled. I have one main motto in life and this is, I treat people the way I would like to be treated.

To us every hunter is different. Everybody has different hunting styles and preferred methods of hunting. All our hunts are custom designed to suit each hunter. We offer a number of different hunting methods.

  • Hunting from our lodge each day. For people who enjoy “home comforts” while hunting.
  • 5000-7000ft spike camps. For people wanting the more “remote” hunting experience.
  • “Helicopter day hunts” from our lodge into our Wilderness area. For people who want the “remote” hunting experience but who also like to have a few home comforts at night.
  • Combination of the above three options.

Gary Herbert in SCI Magazine

Gary W Sci Award

In January 2006 Gary Herbert received the prestigious SCI International Professional Hunter of the Year Award in Reno, Nevada.

Gary Herbert’s first introduction to hunting was with his uncle, burrowed in a duck blind at the age of three. Gary’s life-long passion for hunting began at this time. In 1995, at the age of 22, he was a New Zealand Professional Hunting Guide and formed New Zealand Mounting Hunting Ltd where he continued as one of the youngest Professional Hunting Guides in New Zealand.

Over the last 11 years, Gary has guided more than 200 successful hunters in New Zealand, as well as assisted in guiding Marco Polo sheep hunters in Kyrgyzstan, big horn sheep hunters in Colorado and hunters in Alaska.

With hunting operations based in New Zealand, Gary was able to develop hunting friends in many parts of the world. He has hunted in Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Turkey, England, Mexico, British Columbia and many of the lower 48 states.

Gary and his wife Louise own New Zealand Mountain Hunting Ltd. In conjunction with their ranch, New Zealand Mountain Hunting operates a large government concession area.

Gary is a life member of SCI and has been a long-time supporter of SCI and the Auction Program. Gary is a member of FNAWS, Grand Slam Club, Mule Deer Foundation and many other wildlife organisations. His goal is to provide honest, challenging and ethical hunting for future hunting generations.

Hunt Satisfaction Policy

New Zealand Mountain Hunting Ltd is one of the few hunting companies in the world that has a “hunt satisfaction” policy. If you hunt with us and don’t have at least one shooting opportunity at the desired game you came after, or find the guides, organisation and lodgings inadequate or through any lack of effort from New Zealand Mountain Hunting Ltd you are entitled to a full refund of your hunt payment. We have this “hunt satisfaction” policy so people can see how confident we are of providing them with a high quality hunting experience.

Fam 2023 11 08 13 46 44 1

If you are seriously thinking about hunting New Zealand, I would suggest calling our past clients and ask them what they thought of their New Zealand experience.

My wife Louise, myself and our three daughters Georgia, Grace and Sophie look forward to sharing “our” New Zealand with you.

Sincerely, Gary Herbert

Big game trophy hunting & trout fishing on the beautiful South Island of New Zealand

What we offer.

Red Stags can be hunted from mid February, this is when they are in hard antler, till mid August, as after this time they shed their antlers. The most productive and exciting time to hunt Red Stag is during the roar, which occurs mid March till late April. Rivers South Safaris offers fair chase estate hunting for these majestic Red Stags which can be taken with the rifle or bow.

Tahr can be hunted all year round but for prime capes the best time is May through to August. The rut occurs mid May through to mid July. Bull Tahr hunting is truly the best and most rewarding hunt in New Zealand and they are not called 'King of the Mountain' for no reason.

Rivers South Safaris hunts both typical and non-typical Elk/Wapiti Bulls. Their rut is early March through April. Like all Rivers South Safari hunts they can be hunted with rifle, bow and muzzleloader.

Fallow come in a variety of colours including black, chocolate, spotted (menil) and white. They are the second most popular deer hunted in New Zealand. They can be hunted from late February through to mid September. We offer fair chase estate hunts. They also can be taken with rifle or bow.

A trophy Chamois is eight inches long or better and like Tahr can be hunted all year round. They tend to live at high altitude in small family groups. With their beautifully curved horns and their distinctive facial markings they make an excellent trophy.

Rams carry large curled horns that are quite thick at the base and a trophy is considered with horns that are more than a full curl. They come in an array of dark brown and black colours and some have a white blaze on their foreheads. They make a very attractive trophy. The Arapawa Ram is accepted by the SCI and are included in the SCI South Pacific record books.

River South Safaris offers trophy hunting on all 15 species of Big Game Animals that New Zealand has available to Hunt. Red Stag, Wapiti/Elk, Bull Tahr, Chamois, Fallow Buck, Sika, Javan Rusa, Sambar, White Tail, Asiatic Water Buffalo, Feral OX, Pere David, Arapawa Ram, Wild Boar and Feral Goat.

New Zealand has long been regarded as one of the world's best trout fisheries. Every year anglers from all parts of the world travel to New Zealand to fish its crystal clear, snow fed rivers streams and lakes which are inhabited by magnificent rainbow and brown trout. New Zealand's fishing season opens on the first of October for the central South Island lower country. High country fishing season opens on the first Saturday in November. They both close on the 30th April.
