Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park, established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second-highest tiger population in India. These forests are contiguous with Nagarhole, Wayanad, and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, hence providing safe haven for a number of species – notably the Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger.

Once a private Hunting Reserve for the Maharajas of Mysore, this landscape is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve – one of India’s conservation success stories.

Bandipur has a variety of biomes including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The wide range of habitats helps support a diverse range of organisms. The park is flanked by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south..

About Bandipur national Park

The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.

The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve Safari | Our Experience & What To Expect

Bandipur Bison

Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka is a Tiger Reserve well known for wildlife and a real forest experience. Located near Mysore, this is a nice destination for a weekend trip from Bangalore and Mysore. It is about 230 km from Bangalore and 75 Km from Mysore.

I had a breathtaking experience at Bandipur and sharing the same. This will also serve as a guide on how best you can spend your time here.

START EARLY

Start early in the morning from Bangalore. Early morning weather will be pleasant and you are also fresh and hence you can enjoy the drive.

Stop at Indradhanush – a Vegetarian Restaurant for Breakfast. This is approximately 75 km from Bangalore, after Ramanagar. I love the Neer Dose served here, but all breakfast items are good. Have a leisurely breakfast and enjoy your coffee. You can occupy the table adjacent to the garden to enjoy the cool breeze. Continue the journey after breakfast, but do not forget to taste tender coconut on the way with a short break.

You can now head straight to Bandipur. You will reach around 12.30-1 PM. It takes some 20-30 minutes to check into the room. There is only one eatery/ hotel which serves food and you have to depend on this only. So the moment you are fresh, inform the number of people for lunch which is essential here as the food is prepared based on the number of tourists.

Bandipur Cottage

BANDIPUR ACCOMMODATION

The rooms available in the forest guest house are decent, spacious and well ventilated. There are a few guest houses which have a portico with grills from where you can watch the animals during the night. If you are interested in watching the nightlife of deers and other rarer visitors, pick these cottages. The rooms can be booked online and for bigger groups, they provide dormitories also.

Room service is not available, you have to depend on the only restaurant available for food. If you are in a large group, you can request for a specific food, otherwise, the choice you get about food is limited.

There are many resorts around Bandipur giving an option of budget stays, and also luxury places. We opted to stay in the forest guest house.

SIMPLE YET TASTY FOOD

Thali

The lunch provided here is simple but tasty and sumptuous. Enjoy the lunch, but keep a watch on monkeys, which manage to enter inside through the small openings in the wall. It is fun watching them do all the circus. Post lunch, relax for some time in the cottage.

BANDIPUR SAFARI

Safari starts at 3.30 and the second at 5.30. Better you take 3.30 ride by a bus which will be a trip of about one and a half hours. Encounter with wild animals depends on your luck. You can certainly encounter elephants, but sighting other animals is not for sure. Going inside the deep jungle itself is an amazing experience.

After the safari, you can have some snacks and coffee and take a walk around the campus to grab some fresh oxygen. Enjoy the nature there is a small complex which has eateries and a shopping center. Watch the monkeys playing and creating nuisance here, it is fun.

As the sun sets a lot of guests to gather around the rooms. Yes, you can see hundreds of deer coming close to the rooms. You can see them in groups wherever you turn. They will run away if you go nearer so watch them from a distance. They can keep you occupied for hours by which time your tummy reminds you about dinner. Enjoy dinner at the same hotel. There will be a video playing about wildlife, watch them for some time after dinner. Now it is time to retire for the day.

BANDIPUR MORNING SAFARI

Bandipur Elephants

In the morning, I suggest you take a safari by Jeep. Take a long safari, i.e. double safari which will be for 3 hours. They will take you deep inside the jungle and visit all the water bodies in the forest. This enhances the chances of your encounter with wild animals. You will encounter wild buffaloes, some rare birds like kingfisher and peacock and deer. You will never realize how fast those 3 hours vanish. Every minute you will be holding your breath and watching and listening which is an experience by itself.

The chances of meeting wild beauties are better during morning times. My experience was thrilling. First, we encountered some wild buffaloes, then saw deers and peacocks, which did not excite us much. Then our guide-cum-driver showed us some pug marks which was an indication that the tiger was around that place.

SAFARI EXPERIENCE & EXCITEMENT

Bandipur Safari

Also one of the deer was making a peculiar cry and we were told that it is giving warning to other deers about the danger. But we were not lucky enough to see the tiger. We roamed in the deep forest for two and a half hours with no luck. We could only see a few kingfishers, some other small birds.

We were about to return disappointed. Lo and Behold then came to the surprise! We met a herd! A herd of 12-13 elephants. One younger elephant was putting its trunk across the way of its mother and the guide told us that the younger one was stopping its mother from moving towards us.

We watched them for about 10 minutes and then came the sudden trumpet from one of the elephants from the herd. Yet another one started pouring mud on itself. Our guide told it is time to move and we left the place. My first-time journey inside the deep forest was refreshing, exciting and pleasant.

BANDIPUR FROM BANGALORE

Bangalore is around 230 km from Himavad Gopalaswamy temple. It will take around 5 to 5½ hours with a break for coffee.

This trip will certainly leave a long-lasting memory which you will carry home. One the way back do not forget to shop for fresh vegetables and fruits for the next week!

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

One the way back, we visited Himavadgopalaswamy temple which is located on a hillock. As the name itself suggests, there is fog all around the temple.

The weather is cool around the year. It is a beautiful temple and the view from the temple is also panoramic. Since the area is frequented by wild animals, private vehicles are not allowed on the hill. You have to park your vehicle at the foot of the hill and travel further to the temple by Government bus.

Bandipur Safari – Tryst with the Tiger

' src=

Last Updated on March 29, 2024

Bandipur Safari is by far one of the most ethical  jungle safaris available in India, and also one of the most favorite things to do for people in Bangalore on weekends. This densely forested area is the gateway to many popular hill stations nearby – Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Wayanad to name a few.

Once the favorite hunting ground of the royal families of Mysore, this is now a safe abode for the wild – elephants, antelopes, spotted deer, peafowls, and many other native species including the majestic tiger. Bandipur along with three regions – Nagarhole (also in Karnataka), Wayanad (Kerala) and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu), form the largest Tiger Zone of India both by area and by number (an estimated 570 tigers in the zone, most of which is in Karnataka).

The jungles are interconnected though administered separately by three different states – an exemplary inter-state collaboration for wildlife protection. My love for the Western Ghats of India is not a secret, so every time we went on our regular weekend escapades in search of some hidden gems in the bejeweled crown of the Nilgiris, I always hoped to see just a glimpse of a tiger, or cheetah or maybe a panther.

We’ve seen a flock of delicate deer roaming around us in Nagarhole and the wild elephants on their own family picnic on our way to Ooty, but never had the fortune of tiger sighting – not until we booked a serious 6-hour safari with the Jungle Lodges .

Did you know? India is now home to 70% Tigers in the  world!

A Quick Outline

Our Experience at the Jungle Lodges

Our cottage called Leopard | Bandipur Safari

Envisioned by the former Chief Minister Late Sri Gundu Rao, Jungle Lodge Resorts group is a Public-private partnership (PPP) of the Karnataka government and Tiger Tops. Started in 1980 with the eco-resort at Kabini it happens to be the first eco-tourism venture in India. They have quite an impressive website which has details about all their resorts in Karnataka and the different packages they offer. The packages are usually at the per-person level and not per room.

We started from Bangalore at 7:30 am on a hot Saturday in March and drove about 220 km to reach the resort at 1 pm. For those not aware, March is usually the hottest month of the year in Bangalore with temperature often crossing 35 degrees, incidentally, it is also the best season to see wildlife in Bandipur.

To our pleasant surprise, the drive was smooth, no traffic congestion, a fantastic road which helped us drive 250 km in a little over 4 hours including the breakfast halt. We were greeted at the reception where we were they explained to us the full itinerary – it seemed less of a holiday and more of a project! Here is the briefing for you -Lunch at 2 pm – Bandipur safari for three hours starts at 3:30 pm – Evening snacks to be served after we return from the safari between 6:30 pm –7pm – One-hour wildlife documentary to be screened at the theatre at 8 pm – Dinner starts at 9 pm – Next morning wake-up call at 5:30 am – Morning tea and start of another three-hour Bandipur safari at 6:00 am – Breakfast to start at 9 am – Check-out 11 am

This was the full package that amounted to Rs.7500 per-person for a two-bedroom cottage nestled in a beautiful green forest-like setting.

Jungle Lodge Resorts Bandipur, Karnataka | Bandipur Safari

All the cottages had exquisite wall paintings of wild animals that live in the Bandipur jungle – sloth bear, elephants, deer, leopard among others depending on the name of the cottage. We had a life-size leopard on our wall! Rooms are clean and spacious but do not have TV or AC (eco-tourism, remember?).

There is a cooler instead but because of the greenery and architecture of the cottages, it was quite cool inside the rooms and we didn’t need to use it at all. With the packed schedule of events that we had, there was no time for TV either. We quickly freshened up to make the best use of the little buffer time we had before lunch, to experiment with our newly purchased Nikon DSLR camera.

You can book an all-inclusive tour of Bandipur from Bangalore without worrying about car rental, hotel and safari timings. Check out the deal here .

The Bandipur Safari – How we met the Tiger

Day 1 – the afternoon tiger safari.

After a wholesome lunch, I changed into darker shades as instructed for Safari and we took off for our first safari scheduled for 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We looked like the most under-prepared idiots out there among the experienced wildlife photographers. They had caps, masks , sun gloves, 200mm/500mm lenses and I even forgot my hairband (rest of the things were not even on our packing list).

Monkeys at Bandipur, Karnataka | Bandipur Safari

We were already burning in the scorching sun and knew difficult times were ahead in the safari. As the jeep roared past the roads into the depths of the jungle, the thick canopy relieved us from the sun, but the dust took over and clogged our nose already. That couldn’t stop us from enjoying the rich flora and fauna of the jungle, the experience of raw nature.

At this point let me delve deeper into why tiger sighting in Indian jungles is more difficult than sighting lions in Africa. It’s the elusive skin of the striped beauty and their preferred terrain. Lions usually live in the deserts which have light vegetation, meaning clearer vision for photographers or even normal travelers. The Tigers, on the other hand, live in dense forests and their skin helps them camouflage with the trees. All the jeep drivers in the safari are also experienced forest guides and they know how to follow the sound of birds and track the trails of a tiger. About an hour into the safari, we spotted a dash of striped skin blended with the bushes, from a distance of at least 150 meters.

Lake at Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve | Bandipur Safari

We waited there for almost another hour till she woke up, watching some rare birds including the magnificent peacocks in the meantime. As we waited like the paparazzi with our cameras (without flash) we saw the tiger wake up finally, do a few stretches and then just fade into the jungle. Our 18mm-140mm camera was not good enough to take the perfect pictures of the tiger but we managed to capture the beauty of the jungle and the glorious sunset.

Sunset at Bandipur Natonal Park and Tiger Reserve | Bandipur safari

By the time we returned it was already 7 pm and we had only 1-hour break before the documentary was about to start. I was having a headache from the long journey of the day and had decided that I might as well fall asleep in the theater because what else you do when you watch a documentary. Turns out this was the best movie I had watched in a long time. Shot over a period of several years at Bandipur jungles, tracking the different phases of the life of a tigress – how she grew up, how she found friends and foes- we were invested in her right from the beginning.

After this completely fulfilling experience, we had dinner, tried to self-train ourselves in night-mode photography, failed and retired to our cottages. We had to have a good night’s sleep after all as the wake-up call was at 5:30 am. next morning.

Day 2 : The Morning Tiger Safari

Last day we wrestled with the heat, and today was our tryst with the cold wind of early morning as we breezed past the highway into the jungles. Yes, we didn’t bring stuff to protect us from the heat and dust, neither did we bring even a jacket for the cold. Throughout the safari, we kept following a tiger’s trial closely and followed the sound of birds but failed to spot the striped beast. I know it sounds exactly like hunting, except we were a different kind of “shooters”.

We met other groups on our way who were delighted to show us the shots of the tiger drinking water from the lake. This was turning out to be the most boring experience I could imagine, just sitting still in a jeep at some part of the large forests, with the hope of seeing something. This is what’s meant to be a wildlife photographer I wondered, while I was convinced that nothing good is going to happen while just waiting here and we should just take off.

We did see some peafowls and monkeys, but if you live in India, the sight of monkeys is not as exciting as it might sound. With an empty heart, we set off to leave the forest when right there in the middle of the road just 5km away from the exit sat the tigress. It felt as if she was playing the Diva and we were those page3 photographers feeling blessed in the presence of Mademoiselle. There she was basking in the sun in the morning sun looking at us and then turning around uninterested.

People with those long lenses started shooting her, and comically they indeed looked like snipers in action. We were in an open jeep, unarmed except with our cameras and binoculars, standing a pounce away from the mighty tigress – but there was no fear in our hearts, only awe and the joy of this golden rendezvous. Yes, we managed to take some pretty satisfactory pictures as novice photographers as well!

This is an in-depth post with some relevant information.

I've been on a few safaris in africa, but never a tiger safari in india. I've been trying to convince my good friend to take me to visit bandipur (where he's from) so I can see the tigers. Your pictures make it look magical! Can't wait to go.

Wow that's great! you should definitely visit Bandipur to see these gorgeous beasts

What a fun tiger safari, and ethical to boot! Isn’t it shocking how much equipment some people carry and here I am with my iPhone! I’m so glad that persistence paid off – that tigress just wanted you to appreciate the moment so much more!

I love that you mention responsible tourism. It's such an important factor now, when tourism grew to the enourmous business.

so true, I feel the same 🙂

You are right. Thanks!

This is so interesting to see tigers in their natural habitat. I've never done anything like this, or been to India, so it was a fascinating read. I appreciate the tips on clothing and staying quiet as much as possible, it's so helpful.

Tiger safari sure sounds very exciting! I would be so nervous though but it would be awesome to see them in life in the nature. Such a beautiful animal! This must of been such memorable trip you, you will never forget it!

I am so glad I followed along with you. I was starting to worry you wouldn't see a tiger either (and I was thinking the title was just a tease!), but finally!!! Yay! Also, I love that the tour is both in the afternoon and in the early morning. Just to give you that extra shot at seeing a tiger. (And it must be a good documentary to keep you awake with a headache!) Thanks for the info!

I have been wanting to do the tiger reserve in India for sometime now but was lacking information first hand. You post is great and shares a more unknown safari park then the ones normally promoted. It is eco friendly as well which I appreciate. Love the photo of the tiger on in all its glory that you managed to click. Thanks.

I have always dreamed of taking a trip like this. Being able to stay in a safari and be up close with the animals will surely make me appreciate them more as I am not a big fan of zoos (I feel this is a form of animal cruelty)

Can't wait to visit this paradise in the future.

Though I stay in Bangalore but never been to Bandipur. I am bookmarking this page for my future reference since I found this very informative. Do they have one-bedroom cottages too?

no they have cottages which can accomodate upto three people. The beds are separate, so two people can share one room. they charge on a per person basis and not per room

Safaris are amazing but we should never forget about ethical and responsible tourism. I'm glad you mentioned that part. Bandipur looks simply amazing!

Nice and detailed sharing.

I haven't tried the safari travel, and I think this is something that is wont experiencing. I am glad that you promote ethical tourism because this is always overlooked or dismissed. Which part of your experience is your favorite?

What a fun adventure experience you had. I did the Tiger Safari in Corbett but never saw any tigers. Need to check out Bandipur for sure.

This post brought back very fond memories. As here on Bandipur Safari, I saw white tiger for the first time in my life and so far, the last time too. Haha. I love how strategically this park is located and how close the other national park and places of interest are. Did not know that Bandipur along with three regions is the largest Tiger Zone of India. We had gone on a day trip from Bengaluru. Next time, would keep your lodge experience in mind. Loved the notes on for Ethical Safari as many a times, in excitement, many travelers kind of miss them.

Wow, thanks for sharing a detail post on Jungle safari with lodging in Bandipur. I would love to take this as from long time, I have not gone for any forest tours. It is great that rooms are eco-friendly ones and they don't have A.C. and T.V.. Sometimes while traveling T.V. and other electronics in the hotel room are nuisance. Also early morning wake up call at 5:30 A.M. is great because I love early morning forest tours.

You were lucky to spot tigers in both your safaris! We went to Ranthambore in Rajasthan and just like you, we did one afternoon safari and one morning safari and unfortunately, I did not see one single tiger in either! We were so disappointed, I cannot tell you. Nevertheless, the experience of living in a jungle lodge was fantastic.

From another country with tigers, I think it’s really amazing how well India has done to conserve its tiger population. If only we could do half so well.

Apple’s iPads Must Follow Tough EU Tech Rules After Being Branded A Digital ‘Gatekeeper’ — Joining Safari, App Store And iPhone’s iOS

Apple’s tablet operating system counts as a digital “gatekeeper” under the European Union’s strict new technology rules, the European Commission said on Monday, a development that could force the tech giant to change how it operates in the region and opens it up to hefty penalties for noncompliance as the bloc ups the pressure on tech giants to play nice with smaller rivals.

The EU took aim at Apple's iPad as part of its new DMA rules.

The Commission said both business and end users are “locked-in” to Apple’s iPadOS ecosystem due to its size and user base, which it said the company leverages to disincentivize users from switching to competitors, giving Apple six months to ensure full compliance.

The landmark rules, which came into force on March 7, impose stringent guardrails on platforms designated as such “gatekeepers” from the world’s largest tech companies like Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and TikTok in an attempt to level the digital playing field and make markets fairer, with breaches potentially invoking fines as high as 10% of global annual turnover.

The decision follows a months-long investigation into whether iPadOS falls under the scope of the regime after the Commission designated three of Apple’s other platforms — the Safari web browser, the iOS operating system and the App Store — gatekeepers in September.

In a statement, Apple said it “will continue to constructively engage with the European Commission” to ensure all its designated services comply with the DMA, adding that its “focus will remain on delivering the very best products and services… while mitigating the new privacy and data security risks the DMA poses for our users.”

$38 billion. That’s roughly how big a fine Apple could face under the DMA for noncompliance should the maximum 10% of annual turnover be levied, going by the company’s report from the 2023 financial year. According to that report, Apple raked in $383.3 billion in revenue during 2023.

EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said the iPadOS investigation marks the first time the bloc has determined whether a platform can be considered a gatekeeper based on qualitative factors, rather than a for simply breaching a numerical threshold for users. “We continue monitoring market developments and will not hesitate to open new investigations should other services below the thresholds present characteristics to be considered important gateways for business users,” he said.

What To Watch For

The Commission said it is investigating whether other platforms fall under the purview of the DMA. It named Elon Musk’s X, ByteDance and Booking as platforms it is currently looking into. A decision will be made by May 13 “at the latest,” the Commission said.

Crucial Quote

“Our market investigation showed that despite not meeting the thresholds, iPadOS constitutes an important gateway on which many companies rely to reach their customers,” said European Commission executive vice-president and competition tsar Margrethe Vestager. “Today’s decision will ensure that fairness and contestability are preserved also on this platform, in addition to the 22 other services we designated last September.”

USC closes campus as anti-war protesters return; LAPD is on alert

By Matthew Rodriguez , The Associated Press , Iris Salem

Updated on: April 28, 2024 / 2:22 PM PDT / CBS/AP

Campus protests over the war in Gaza are intensifying at the University of Southern California as the LAPD Saturday declared a tactical alert.

Pro-Palestinian protesters returned to the school. A few hours after the protest started, dozens of police squad cars responded to the school with lights and sirens on, resulting in the LAPD issuing a tactical alert, which is used by police to beef up its force and presence in anticipation that an event may grow in strength or pose a risk to public safety.

Dozens of protesters gathered near a vandalized fountain, which included graffiti, and the Tommy Trojan statue was also covered with graffiti. It seemed that fireworks were lit near the campus during the protest.

USC said on Saturday it had temporarily closed its University Park Campus to nonresidents, without providing details of the closure or possible enforcement measures.

Paul McQuiston of USC Media Relations said in a statement that USC property was vandalized by members of a group "that has continued to illegally camp on our campus."

Students declined numerous attempts by university President Carol Folt to meet, and the administration hopes for "a more reasonable response Sunday before we are forced to take further action," McQuiston said.

"While the university fully supports freedom of expression, these acts of vandalism and harassment are absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," McQuiston said.

The university announced Thursday that it will cancel its main graduation ceremony, planned for May 10, 2024, due to "new safety measures."

The announcement comes amid the controversy surrounding the valedictorian address and pro-Palestinian demonstrators on campus. USC drew criticism after refusing to allow the valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, who has publicly supported Palestinians, to make a commencement speech. Administrators then scrapped the keynote speech by filmmaker Jon M. Chu.

Over 50 student organizations signed a letter written in support of Tabassum, who last week accused USC of caving to hatred.

"I'm just as committed to the lives of Jews as I am to Muslims or to Christians, or to any other sort of identity," she said.  A Change.org petition demanding Tabassum be allowed to speak at commencement has gathered nearly 4,000 signatures.

A week after the decision to cancel the valedictorian's speech, protesters gathered in USC's Alumni Park following a trend of pro-Palestinian demonstrations at college campuses nationwide.

The protest lasted most of the day but began to end at about 5 p.m. Wednesday after the LAPD ordered demonstrators to move off the campus.

Many stayed in the area, locking arms as LAPD officers in riot gear marched closer to them. Others took out their phones and appeared to record what was happening as police started to surround the remaining demonstrators.

After a few hours, the LAPD managed to move the protesters off campus, arresting at least 93 people for trespassing in the process.

usc-protest-lock-arms.jpg

A day later, the school on Thursday announced the cancellation of its main graduation event. Folt, the university president, made her first public statement late Friday, addressing the controversies as "incredibly difficult for all of us."

"No one wants to have people arrested on their campus. Ever. But, when long-standing safety policies are flagrantly violated, buildings vandalized, Department of Public Safety directives repeatedly ignored, threatening language shouted, people assaulted, and access to critical academic buildings blocked, we must act immediately to protect our community," Folt said.

USC is not the only institution of higher education where students have been protesting the Israel-Hamas war, as demonstrations have been held across the country, including at UCLA where the protests have remained peaceful. According to the Associated Press, protesters nationwide are demanding schools cut financial ties to Israel and divest from companies they say enable the conflict. Some Jewish students say the protests have veered into antisemitism and made them afraid to set foot on campus, the AP reported.

On Sunday, students at UCLA were expected to hold a demonstration in support of Israel, starting at 11 a.m. That protest will be held near an area where pro-Palestinian protesters have been peaceably gathering.

In a Bruin alert, UCLA said:

"UCLA is following University of California systemwide policy guidance, which directs us not to request law enforcement involvement preemptively, and only if absolutely necessary to protect the physical safety of our campus community. We've taken several steps to help ensure people on campus know about the demonstration so they can avoid the area if they wish. This includes having student affairs representatives stationed near Royce quad to let Bruins and visitors know about the encampment, redirect them if desired and to serve as a resource for their needs. We also have safety teams who are wearing Student Affairs Mitigators (SAMs), Public Safety Aides (PSAs) and CSC security uniforms throughout the demonstration site. You may also hear helicopters dispatched by news media who are covering the demonstration."

Centers of gravity, not black holes:experts discuss new moscow metro stations, united kingdom architecture news - jan 22, 2015 - 10:42   4565 views.

In 2015 Moscow will see a wide range of new capital transportation facilities, and their design is just as important. We asked four jury members of the recent design competition for metro stations Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino to tell us more about this aspect.

Erken Kagarov, Vice President of The Academy of the Graphic Design, art director of “Art. Lebedev Studio”:

“Being a designer, first of all I did my best to evaluate the visual aspect of the offered solutions. Besides that it was important for me to see something new and original. Otherwise, why bother organizing a competition?

As for the results of the contest, I am under the impression that we tried to get everything at once, and that was a mistake. The winning projects are quite expressive and not too expensive. Unfortunately, they are not at all ground-breaking. If we take a look at the history of Moscow metro and the work of one of its best creators, Alexey Dushkin, we’ll see that he was constantly inventing and reinventing certain techniques and materials: he was the first one to use stainless steel to decorate Mayakovskaya, he came up with the idea of columns lit from below for Kropotkinskaya, he put up stained-glass panels underground, where the sun doesn’t ever shine, on Novokuznetskaya...... Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
