Dream Theater on Emotional Mike Portnoy Reunion, First 40th Anniversary Tour Dates

By Kory Grow

Mike Portnoy cannot remember the last time he sat for an interview as a member of Dream Theater , the band he left in 2010. And nobody in the prolific prog-metal band can remember the last time all five musicians took part in an interview together. The drummer, who returned to the band last year, says he’s looking forward to it, though, as he finds a seat between guitarist John Petrucci and vocalist James LaBrie in the live room of the group’s Long Island, New York studio/HQ.

“We didn’t do group interviews for a while,” Petrucci tells Rolling Stone .

“The more people you have involved in an interview,” LaBrie says, “It can be a problem.” He smiles and deadpans, “See you later,” and stands up. But then he settles back into his seat, and it’s clear the group feels reinvigorated after Portnoy’s return.

When asked what they’ve been up to, Petrucci says, “Specifically this,” and plays an angular guitar riff, smiling. In addition to the album, they’re in the first stages of planning what will be their 40th anniversary tour (even though 2024 is Dream Theater’s 39th year), which kicks off in Europe in October. The first date will take place at London’s O2 Arena on Oct. 20, and the full routing is below the Q&A. But even a year early, the trek is a victory lap for the band.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

To accommodate the drummer and his apartment-sized kit, they refurbished their whole HQ, which looks like an unassuming warehouse in suburban Long Island, expanding their main studio since, quite frankly, all of his drums wouldn’t fit. For nearly two months now, they’ve been spending six days a week together, sometimes working 10 hours a stretch. “We’re deep in the process, but it’s been great,” Portnoy says.

“We are on our sixth song,” Petrucci says. “We’re still in the process, so we don’t know how many songs we’ll actually have.” About a week after the Rolling Stone interview, though, Portnoy posted to Instagram that he had finished recording his drum tracks for the album. As each of the five musicians says during an interview that lasts a little over an hour, Portnoy’s return was meant to be.

Mike Portnoy Pays Tribute to Neil Peart: 'One of My Greatest Heroes'

Dream theater talk recording in the catskills and their heavy new lp, dream theater's jordan rudess remembers keith emerson: 'he was my idol'.

James LaBrie: What was evident to each of us was there was a familiarity. The chemistry was there. It was like somebody threw me in a time warp. It’s like we picked up from where we left off [with him].

Why did the four of you want Mike to return? LaBrie: I think we had to return the band back to its strongest form.

Petrucci: It wasn’t one singular thing; it was sort of a series of life events that caused an organic conclusion. We all talked about it. It was like, “Yeah, this makes sense right now.”

Jordan Rudess: There’s so many factors involved, and each of us has our particular relationships. And it was just a moment when everything seemed to come together, and we went, “You know what? Let’s do this. Now’s the time.”

John Myung: It was a collective moment of certainty.

Petrucci: That sounds like an album title. [ All laugh ].

Mike, did it surprise you when they invited you back into the band? Portnoy: Before the Covid pandemic, if you had asked me or any of these guys, “Was a reunion in the cards?” I probably would’ve said, “I doubted that it could happen.” I think if the lockdown hadn’t happened, you guys probably would’ve been on tour, and I would’ve been on tour with one of my 48 bands.

But once we were all locked down, John asked me to play on his solo album. Then, from there, Jordan, John, and myself did the Liquid Tension Experiment album. And then I did John’s tour. So there were just these series of events of reconnecting us — not only on a musical level but also on a personal level for many years prior to that.

All of our families are friends. And my daughter and John’s daughter shared an apartment together for many, many years. And John Myung lives right down the block from me, and his wife’s at my house every night. There was just a series of events both personally and musically that started to feel like, “Well, maybe this really is in the cards. Maybe this is the right time.”

Petrucci: When Mike left the band, it was traumatic for all of us. We had to figure out how we were going to move our career forward. And those years that went by, they were also healing years because you don’t just have something like that happen, and all of a sudden, you’re all best buddies a week later. There’s some trauma there that had to heal. Thirteen years was enough time for that to happen and be like, “Hey, you know what, man? We love each other like we’re brothers.”

How did you all move past the war of words in the press? Petrucci: I don’t think it matters anymore.

Portnoy: Well, now it definitely doesn’t matter anymore. But no question, the first couple of years [after I left], it was dramatic. It was difficult on a personal level, and living in the age of social media didn’t help things because every single interview or comment got twisted and blown up and dissected and taken out of context. But once I saw each of these guys individually before we got back as a band, to me, all that bullshit and drama melted away.

[ Portnoy turns to LaBrie ]. I don’t know if it’s uncomfortable to talk about, but the last person I reconnected with was James. I’ll speak for myself, but when we finally connected, and we saw each other in person, all that shit just melted away within seconds.

How was that moment for you, James? LaBrie: It was pretty intense. It was overwhelming for me because, for one, I was thinking about the show that night. It was at the Beacon Theatre in New York. And for two, there’s this guy that wants to meet me that is my brother, and I have to accept him back into my life. And it was very emotional because we had gone through what we had gone through.

Did you have doubts about seeing him again? LaBrie: To be honest with you, I called my wife, and I said, “Mike’s here. He wants to see me.” And she said, “You got to do it because this is your brother. This is somebody that created who and what you are today. Move through it, and you’ll be happier. Take the monkey off your fucking back.”

Mike, that Beacon show was your first time seeing Dream Theater. What did you think? Portnoy: It sucked without me. [ All laugh ]. Well, I wasn’t watching them to be critical; it was more of just an emotional thing. But it was surreal seeing the band since the three of us formed the band when we were teenagers. We formed it at Berklee College of Music when we were 18 years old, and we had 25 years together before I left the band. So it was weird to be on the other side of the stage hearing “Pull Me Under” and on top of it all, it was magnified by the fans. They saw me sitting there watching the band. I was trying to not bring any attention to myself, but it was hard with a blue beard sticking out from my hood.

LaBrie: I brought attention to the fact.

Portnoy: Yeah, James pointed me out. I was like, “Oh, man, thanks a lot.”

How did watching the show make you feel? Portnoy: I’d be lying if I didn’t say that it made me miss the band. During those 13 years, I would watch from the sidelines, just kind of keeping tabs. I didn’t really stay fully involved with what these guys were doing because, honestly, it hurt. They’d put out a new album, and I would always listen to it once or twice, just out of curiosity. But it was painful. So it took me many, many years to be able to go see a Dream Theater show.

How did Mike Mangini take the news that you were inviting Mike Portnoy back? Petrucci: He understood immediately the move that we were making. And he accepted it and welcomed that change in a really gracious way.

LaBrie: It felt right to him.

Petrucci: It made this whole process start on a positive note.

Mike, are there songs from the Mangini albums they made without you that you’d like to play live? Petrucci: I don’t think he knows any of them. [ All laugh ].

Portnoy: One of the things we discussed with me coming back was about set lists for future tours. And John and the guys were open to me taking the reins back [in making them]. But with that came the discussion: what are we going to do with all the stuff from the last 13 years?

Petrucci: Yeah, you need to research.

Petrucci: No, absolutely not. Especially not the Grammy Award-winning [“The Alien”]. Did I just say that?

Portnoy: Geez.

LaBrie: The irony in that is I don’t want to play that song.

In the past, you’ve done tours billed as “An Evening With Dream Theater,” where you don’t have support acts and you play longer. Is that what this upcoming tour will be? Petrucci: Yeah. And we’re billing it as our 40th-anniversary tour. It coincidentally coincides with us being together for 40 years.

Myung: I got a brainstorm. [ All look ]. We’ll do five nights at Radio City, tonight we’ll do a different album.

Petrucci: You heard it here first. [ Laughs ].

I understand that that may not happen, but it’s nice you’re thinking about these things. Portnoy: For me, it’s exciting to play anything because we haven’t played live together in almost 15 years. Back then, I felt the need to write a different set list for every show because we had been doing it for all those years. We had played “Pull Me Under” a thousand times. But now, having been away from it, every night is going to be inspiring and exciting, at least for me, because we haven’t played it in all this time. There’s literally a generation of kids that never got to see this lineup.

Petrucci: I got that on my solo tour. They were family members who would bring their kids. And they were freaking out because they were like, “I’m so glad my son or daughter got to see you and Mike play together because they weren’t born yet.”

LaBrie: What’s funny about that is when I saw you guys in Toronto, I remember thinking, “Fuck, that’s undeniable.” It’s just like the connection was just boom .

Portnoy: On John’s tour, we’d look out and see grown men crying every single night. And now we’re looking forward to a whole bunch more people crying each and every night. If they were crying for just the two of us, think about what’s going happen when five of us.

Myung: We should sell tissue boxes.

Petrucci: We definitely had the hard conversation like, “OK, this isn’t the same band you left. Things are run differently.” It took us a few years to regroup and figure things out, and we got to a point where we’re a really well-oiled machine. But Mike has been great. He’s way more chill. [ Turns to Portnoy ]. You even say some things that are kind of funny, like, “If I’m allowed to do this.” You don’t have to be that careful, but I appreciate it. I feel like it’s very respectful on his part. It’s like a reset.

Myung: There’s a maturity everybody has. It involves having more patience and just being more mellow and appreciating each other and what we bring. We keep talking about the group dynamic, what it takes to have a bunch of guys together and have it really work and move forward. We just feel that those elements are there to make a great album and to enjoy being together, and to enter this next phase with some real grace.

Does anything feel different musically? Portnoy: Everything we’ve been writing sounds like every classic Dream Theater song or album. The style is here. The chemistry is the same. The people and the elements are the same. It all just feels and sounds so familiar.

Petrucci: There’s maturity in your playing, just the way it hits, the flow, the groove, the feel. It’s always been great, but it’s even better. When we’re cutting a new drum track, it’s just brilliant from the first hit.

Portnoy: Aw, thank you.

Rudess: I think one of the things that makes Dream Theater really loved by the fans is the fact that we try to come from the heart, and we love a good melody. We’re not afraid of playing music that feels emotional. And Mike coming back into the band with who he is and who he is now gives us extra energy.

How will you know when the album is done? Petrucci: There are different factors. A lot of times we’ll base it on how long we want this record to be.

As previously reported, DREAM THEATER is planning to enter the studio in late 2023 to begin recording its sixteenth studio album.

The progressive metal giants' timetable for the follow-up to 2021's "A View From The Top Of The World" was revealed by Petrucci in an October 2022 interview with SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" .

Asked about DREAM THEATER 's plans for 2023 after he is done touring in support of his second solo album, "Terminal Velocity" , John said: " DREAM THEATER is gonna continue touring in 2023. Just like everybody else, we were shut down for two years and have a lot of catching up to do. We're supporting 'A View From The Top Of The World' . We've done extensive tours of U.S. and Europe, but even… We played two shows only in Asia; we played, like, four shows in South America. There's a lot more ground to cover. So 2023 is gonna be filled with DREAM THEATER touring; I'm certain of that."

Asked if he and his bandmates have thought about working on new music yet, Petrucci said: "We're still working the last record. I can't see us being back in the studio until roughly this time next year. If you kind of just look forward to next year, you see the way it's gonna lay out, and we've got festivals. Before you know it, it's August. There's not gonna be any studio work done before the fall; I highly doubt it. So a new record wouldn't be [released before] the following year."

"The Alien" , a track from "A View From The Top Of The World" , landed DREAM THEATER its first-ever Grammy in the "Best Metal Performance" category at the 64th annual Grammy Awards , which was held in April in Las Vegas. DREAM THEATER 's previous Grammy nominations were for the song "On The Backs Of Angels" , from 2011's "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" album, and the single "The Enemy Inside" from 2013's "Dream Theater" .

"A View From The Top Of The World" was described in a press released as " DREAM THEATER at its musical finest, expanding on the sound they helped create while maintaining the elements that have garnered them devoted fans around the globe." The seven-song album also marked the second studio album with InsideOut Music / Sony Music . The artwork was created by longtime cover collaborator Hugh Syme ( RUSH , IRON MAIDEN , STONE SOUR ). "A View From The Top Of The World" was produced by Petrucci , engineered and additional production by James "Jimmy T" Meslin and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap .

Once Dream Theater finishes Dreamsonic, Petrucci will return to the Sunshine State Aug. 3-6 for the fourth edition of his band camp, John Petrucci’s Guitar Universe. The W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale hosts the four-day stretch of master classes, concerts and jam sessions that boasts an all-star lineup of guitar instructors and encourages musicians from beginners to virtuosos to attend. According to johnpetruccisguitaruniverse.com , “The span of the players in this camp — stylistically, age, gender, nationality — represents a cross-section of the guitar community all in one spot.”

Below, Petrucci discusses the ideation and execution of Dreamsonic, plus future plans for the band and its new “traveling festival.”

What does the band aim to do with Dreamsonic?

Since we started, the genre has grown, and prog rock and prog metal have expanded to mean all these different things. So it’s kind of interesting how many bands are out there, but they’re doing slightly different things. And this inaugural run is a prime example of that because Animals As leaders and Devin Townsend and Dream Theater are all considered prog metal bands, but we’re all doing it in a very different way. That’s what this tour is all about.

How long has Dream Theater been doing “an evening with” format?

I’m not sure when we started that. It definitely has been some time now. The last couple of runs that we did, we did stray from that for the first time and took out a single opener on a run we did through Europe and in the U.S. But for the most part, we’ve been doing “an evening with” since I can remember now. There’s a couple reasons [for that]. One is that our fans really appreciate and want to see us in that context because there’s just so much material to dive into. And the second reason is because there’s so much material to dive into. Putting together a three-hour show is easy. There’s so much, and we have so many epics that take up a ton of time. So the challenge becomes, in this circumstance on the Dreamsonic tour, [that] we have to make our set an hour-and-a-half.

Why were Animals As Leaders and Devin Townsend chosen for this first run?

Are you following the prototype of any particular festival?

You know, I’ve been calling it a festival, but I guess when you imagine a festival, you picture a weekend and there’s many bands over the course of that weekend, and it’s just in one spot … Years ago, we did Dave Mustaine’s Gigantour … It’s in the vein of that, where there’s a bunch of bands and it’s a traveling tour, so I’m not sure what the technical word for it is when it travels like that. So I’m calling it a festival. ( Laughs .) A traveling festival.

It’s early days, but do you hope to expand the lineup in the future?

Yeah, definitely. This is the type of thing where we can embark on this at any point, whether it be [for] an album touring cycle or whether it be during some downtime or whatever. This is the inaugural run; we decided to do it in the U.S., but we could really bring this anywhere: Europe, Asia, South America. And as far as the lineup, I think the beauty of this is that, again, there are so many bands that we know of … some that have been around for a while, some that are super young, that are doing this type of thing in their own way, and that’s the beauty of it. We can put together endless combinations of groups that would present a great, entertaining, really cool show packed with music, but still be diverse and different enough in the style of the bands.

Is it more difficult to launch an endeavor like this in this tough economy than when you typically go on the road?

Do you have any dates on the books for Dreamsonic once the tour is done?

No, this will be the end of the tour cycle for us. We’ve been touring for quite a while now in support of A View From the Top of the World , which is the latest Dream Theater record … Dreamsonic will actually be the last touring that we’ll do for 2023, and at some point, we’ll move on to working on a new record.

Do you anticipate doing Dreamsonic annually, or will it go out when it feels right?

I think it’s when we feel it’s the right time to do it. Annually is a little tough because sometimes we’re in the studio a certain year, or we’re back to “an evening with” and supporting the record in that format. So I think this is going to be the type of thing that when the timing feels right, then we’ll do it. But I think the important thing with the inaugural run was really getting all the infrastructure and everything in place, and building and establishing a brand so it’s something we could take out in the future. And hopefully, when people hear that name, Dreamsonic, they’ll know it’s going to be a showcase of some of the best prog metal in the world.

At the end of the night, do members from all three bands do any type of jam together?

Anything else that you care to add?

This isn’t so much a Dream Theater thing, it’s more of a me thing that I’m really looking forward to. At the end of this tour, about a week later, I host a guitar camp. It’s called John Petrucci’s Guitar Universe.

[This year’s lineup includes] Tosin Abasi from Animals. Fredrik Akesson, who’s the guitar player in Opeth. Lari Basilio, she’s a Brazilian guitar player, kind plays more of a fusion style. Ola Englund, who’s a Swedish sort of YouTuber guy. Guthrie Govan, who is just one of the craziest and most amazing guitar players on the planet. Tim Henson and Scott LePage, they’re in a band called Polyphia, which is another band that would be under that prog flag that would be great on a Dreamsonic tour. Aaron Marshall is in a band called Intervals. My wife, Rena Petrucci, she’s in a band called Mainstreak, and she’s a guest artist. Plini, who’s from Australia, writes some incredible instrumental music. Jason Richardson, another shredder. Joscho Stephan, who’s a gypsy-jazz guy from Germany, and then Zakk Wylde, who of course, we all know. I think there’s only 10 slots left. Dream Theater Discuss Emotional Reunion with Drummer Mike Portnoy for Upcoming Tour

The announcement of Mike Portnoy returning to Dream Theater shook the world of prog-metal last year. In October, 2023, Mike Portnoy, the prodigal drummer came back to Dream Theater after being away for thirteen years. The news sent shockwaves of excitement through the fanbase and the anticipation of what lies ahead became progressively intense. In a latest interview with The RollingStones after over a decade, the band announced their upcoming tour with Portnoy.

The band is now getting ready for their 40th-anniversary tour, starting in Europe. The stage is going to be set for their incredible reunion that promises to redefine the genre. As the new chapter begins, the progressive metal scene stands at a crossroad, shaped by both past influences and future possibilities. Portnoy’s return brings back the genre’s classic sound and with a new album on the way and electrifying live shows ahead, it’s a rebirth for progressive metal.

The Reunion

The journey to this exciting reunion wasn’t easy. When Portnoy left the band in 2010, it left a hole in the group, and people wondered what would happen next. But over time, friendships healed, and through a series of personal and musical connections, Portnoy found his way back.

Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama

' src=

For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless,  Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.

Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to  Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.

For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?

For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen  and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.

It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?

I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.

The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?

I like such music and I think it suits our city.

In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?

I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.

Character Analysis Natasha Rostov

Natasha is Tolstoy's ideal woman. Attractive and bewitching as a child, her expressiveness and spontaneity are the natural outpourings of a creature imbued with life forces. She is compassionate, intense, with a soul responsive to music and dance, Tolstoyan symbols of her emotional spontaneity, and every moment of her being manifests the qualities of"instinctive life." Tolstoy equates her with springtime, Andrey's"renascence," Nikolay's affirmation of the"intensity of life" after his humiliation from Dolohov, and she is, as well, the agency of love for her bereaved mother and the reconciler of family quarrels.

Vehemently opposed to women being sexual objects, Tolstoy sees the feminine destiny entirely constrained within the limits of childrearing and familial harmony. Sexuality for Tolstoy must be directed toward its natural end of reproduction, else it is decadent and destructive. His own passionate nature attesting to sensual temptations, Tolstoy believed the only"safe" women were those who sublimated their seductiveness into the natural cares of womanhood. Thus Natasha is her author's example of a successful woman: As she grows stout with child-bearing, she directs her enthusiasm and affectionateness toward her household responsibilities. Her femininity is no longer an empty gesture as in the days of Anatole, but now is participant in the biological continuity of life.
