Bear awareness tour - be aware

Really disappointed in this trip. Although we did hike to a place where there were two empty bear dens, the remainder of tour was a casual drive around the Whistler area looking at local beauty spots. I had expected we would go to areas frequented by bears but instead we went to a waterfall, a lake and shown where the Olympic park and athletes accommodation. So whilst our guide, Chris, was really nice, my family and I felt the description of the tour was misleading. The guide said he had seen more bears just walking around the Whistler area than on the bear tour. So, if you want to try see bears in their natural habitat, forget this tour. If on the other hand you want a drive around the Whistler area beauty spots, then you won't be disappointed.

Hi Paul Thanks for your review. I am sorry you were disappointed. When searching for wildlife it really is hit and miss especially this time of year. The Callaghan Valley, where Chris took you out to, is normally the best area for bear viewing. Many bears are feeding a little higher up now as there the berry crop is in full bloom higher up the mountains. The Callaghan is also higher in altitude so there definetley a better chance to see them there as well as some of the spots Chris took you where we have seen many bears over the season. Thanks Keenan

My husband and I took up the challenge of this trip and were not disappointed. After being personally picked up from our holiday home by a really friendly guy (Antoine), we went on to meet up at the Eco tour office with the rest of our group. It was then on to Alta lake where as complete novices, we were relieved to be given a really helpful talk through. (Apologies that my husband put his foot through your special step!) Once again the staff were really friendly and extremely helpful (particularly Andrew from Sheffield). So once we were feeling confidant we were last to leave and took off in our canoe together ...... and what a great experience we had! It was such fun with many obstacles and challenges to overcome. The water was low and with several Beaver dams to manoeuvre around and the odd tree root, it all added to our interesting journey. Needless to say we arrived over 3 hours later on to Green lake which was beautiful. Nothing was too much trouble by the staff once again. They arranged a personal pick up for us and we were dropped back home again by Antoine, who was a top guy and so informative. So glad we chose this canoeing experience on the Golden river with Eco Tours. We would certainly recommend it to anyone from complete beginners (like ourselves) to experts. Not sure if we are aching so much with the laughter or physical aspect. In any case it was worth it. .......... Thanks again guys.

Thanks so much for your review. We are extremely fortunate to have amazing staff working with us. We feel our staff is the main reason why Whistler Eco Tours has been going strong for 13 years now. Thanks Keenan

Other than my 19 year old son we had never kayaked or canoed before so opted for the more expensive guided option. We are glad we did as it is not too easy finding the river from Alta Lake. The whole trip down the river was great fun and full of variety as the river changes throughout and both lakes were very different. I took a single kayak as did my son whilst my wife and daughter took the canoe with the guide. They learnt a lot more that I did but I know I saw parts of the river bank they missed as they seemed to be able to keep to the river and aoid the occasional brush with the trees or the riverbank. Not cheap (nothing is in Whistler) but well worth it.

Thanks for your review. I am glad the guide was taken and shared their knowledge with your family. Thanks for coming down the River of Golden Dreams with WhistlerEco Tours. Keenan Moses

Meet lots of people and the river goes through Whistler. Not to hard not too easy. Easy activity but not for romance more for mingling.

Thanks for the review. The River is just a fun thing to do....

Signed up for a guided tour of the Lake to Lake through the river of Golden Dreams- ended up being the only one on it so it was a private guided tour yet at the price of a guided tour!! The office staff were so pleasant and extremely hard working (they were quite busy with only 1 individual working and running around) yet all of us waiting were dealt with in no time and with excellent customer service and much kindness!! The van ride to the area was very quick and again, the extremely kind individuals working for the company including our driver kept a smile on my face along the way! My tour guide, Phil, was extremely knowledgeable, a ton of fun and very humorous, and was very kind and helpful! I learned oh so much about the layout of the mountains, the flora and fauna, and all the wildlife we saw along the way! As well Phil was extremely knowledgeable about so much more than just the ecology- had some great chats and simply a wonderful time overall! Thank you very much Eco Tours Whistler for a lovely afternoon today- I will be sure to pass on to others and spread the word about just how wonderful your company, your staff, and the experience was overall! :)

Thanks for your wonderful review. We are fortunate to have amazing people working for us from the Office staff to the drivers and of course our guides. Phil is a gem! He has been with us for over 10 years and he continues to lead our guiding team and loves what he does.

This is a good way to spend a day in Whistler in the summer. You start on Alta Lake and go through the river to a pickup point downstream. Does help to have some basic canoeing skills as the river is very narrow and winding. Kids enjoyed it. Only complaint was that it seemed expensive .

Thanks for your response. We try to price accordingly but for 3 hours, 2 and a half on the water, transportation from and to your Hotel, canoe or kayak rentals, paddles PFD's, throw ropes, bailers etc... it is hard to imagine what you would expect to pay and expect better value. It is $70 per person for a self-guided tour. Add a guide for $40 more ( for 3 hours!) or a Guide in your canoe for $80 more). I am not sure what tours in Whistler cost less. Thanks Keenan

Whistler Blackcomb

BEAR VIEWING TOURS

Bear viewing tour info .

Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are home to up to 50 black bears and cubs that have adapted to feeding, mating, and hibernating within ski area habitats. This is the only population of black bears in B.C. that has been studied for over two decades.

Travel in a comfortable 4x4 vehicle through a maze of ski area roads that traverse the largest concentration of mother bear ranges in the region. Bear feeding patterns shift from valley bottom to higher mountain elevations as the summer continues, and the tours follow this progression allowing access these hidden scenic alpine ecosystems and natural habitats any time of the summer. Take an even closer look with short walks to bear feeding sites and bear family daybeds, and wander through old growth forests where bears have hibernated through many winters.

Our experienced and qualified team of guides boasts a wealth of knowledge of Whistler's flora and fauna, ecology and bear biology for a truly incredible outdoor learning experience.

I ask because I read a comment on here that to see bears in Whistler just visit the garbage dump!!

I'd hate to come to Whislter this July and go away without seeing a bear, but at $180 a throw it would be quite costly to buy three tours if we can see them elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Gill, Dundee, Scotland-visiting this Jul/August for two weeks- Whistler, Kamloops,Canmore and Drumheller, any advice welcomed.

' class=

The bear eco tour is definitely worth doing. You will go early in the morning or evening. If you want to see bears this is the best way to do it.

It is unlikely that you will spot any bears while on an ATV tour as the group makes toooo much noise and the bears go back in the woods.

Thanks again,Gill

http://whistlerblackcomb.com/todo/summer/bears/index.htm is the only one we can find.

I think it is a register to book thing?

The tour with Micheal Allen is "the bear tour to book". Mainly because Micheal Allen is an actual bear reasercher. There are other companies that offer bear tours but I find that they are just "guides" and are not as indepth as Micheal Allen is. I would suggest that if you book this tour, go in the morning.

Thanks very much for the info,

Also wondering if anyone has done the full viewing tour ($235pp) or the Olympic Village tour ($149pp) that is about half the price??? What’s the real differences and is it worth the extra money?

Any guidance is appreciated!

Here is some information from a bear question posted up a couple of months ago:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g154948-i400-k12356429-Bear_viewing-Whistler_British_Columbia.html

I believe the link in post 7 of that thread, goes to Whistler Blackcomb , which is the one I think Allen is associated with.

Know Before You Go: What to Expect in Whistler This Summer

When the snow melts off Whistler’s mountaintops a whole other world is revealed. High above the treeline, our alpine peaks await, vast and rugged, ready to be explored – hidden in plain sight.

Two people hike to an alpine lake on Whistler Blackcomb in the summer sun,

With so much to see and do in the village and valley, the high alpine can get overlooked amid all the summer fun. But when you take the time to explore Whistler Blackcomb’s mountaintops , you find a change of pace, a place of expansiveness, solitude and simplicity, all just a quick gondola ride away. When you expand your itinerary to include the alpine you’re rewarded with a range of summer activities for both the adventure-seeker and the sightseer.

Suspend your disbelief on a suspension bridge perched on a peak. Wander in wonder through towering snow walls. Journey through time exploring over 50 kilometres of hiking trails across a volcanic landscape dotted with ancient glaciers, turquoise lakes and wildflower-filled meadows.

Three women walk up Whistler Mountain amongst the snow walls in the early summer.

Looking to kick back? Take in the 360-degree views on the world record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola and then treat yourself to a mountaintop dining experience before the ride back down to the village.

And that’s just the tip of the alpine. With Whistler’s vibrant village , rich local culture and abundance of activities around town , you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to take it in and get the full taste of summer. Adventure through the valley by bike, make a splash in our lakes and rivers and hike through ancient forests.

A group of friends walk down the Whistler Village Stroll on a sunny, summer's day.

Visit Midweek

Weekends and holidays are busy, especially at Whistler’s lakes and parks, so come midweek if you can, extend your weekends and consider staying for longer . Not only will the added time mean you can dig in and explore at a more relaxed pace, but it also means more choice and more deals (FYI – rates decrease the longer you stay and there are added perks like free $150/ $250 Adventure Vouchers) .

Before You Arrive: Book, Book, Book

  • We advise organizing your accommodation in advance as well as making dinner reservations and booking activities. Popular tour times booked out last summer, as did the restaurants (especially if they had a sunny patio). We have a dining guide and interactive map to help you make some food plans on our dedicated dining page . We want you to have the best time, not a stressed time and most places have flexible cancellation policies, so if your plans do change then they’re easy to adjust.

A couple dine on a sunny, outdoor patio in Whistler.

  • While we’re talking about activities, it’s worth considering a guided tour like bear viewing, hiking, biking, or canoeing – local experts know hidden spots and trails, and manage the logistics so you don’t have to. There’s been so much to keep in mind over the past year that it’s a relief to hand the decision-making over to someone else for the day. Bike rentals (for the bike park and Valley Trail) are also very popular in the summer, so if you can, consider making a booking in advance.
  • Although tickets for the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola never sell out, it can’t help to get them early so all you need to do is pick them up when you get here. You can book them via Whistler.com or by calling 1-800-944-7853. In resort, you can grab PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola tickets from the Whistler Visitor Centre or Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations. For more on Whistler Blackcomb operations take a look at, Know Before You Go: Whistler Blackcomb Sightseeing, Biking and Hiking .

A family looks out at the view from the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola in Whistler with the summer sun shining in.

  • If you’re planning on doing some hiking in and around Whistler and you’re heading into a BC Park (like Garibaldi Provincial Park), make sure you check BCparks.ca for information on the free day-use passes (vehicle and trail), which are required during peak hours, as well as any advisories or closures. Before you go, make sure to review the BC Parks Responsible Recreation Guide to brush up on how to recreate safely and respectfully this summer.
  • Whistler Alert is the official emergency notification system used by the RMOW to communicate with residents and visitors during emergencies via text message, phone and email. We encourage you to sign up for it while you’re here (just in case). When you register, you will be asked to provide your contact number and the date you plan to leave Whistler so that you don’t receive alerts when you’re back home.

Two women walk across the Cloudraker Skybridge, Whistler's Suspension Bridge on Whistler Blackcomb.

When You Arrive

  • Check into your accommodation and relax. You’re in Whistler now.
  • Park and play! Get rid of the car – you don’t need it. Whistler has a 46-kilometre Valley Trail system that weaves in and out of parks, lakes and neighbourhoods. We suggest renting a bike and using it to explore new places this summer. Have you ever been down to Creekside Village or Function Junction ? You could even make it an e-bike for even more exploring power; just make sure you take a quick read of the trail etiquette before heading out.

A couple walk their bikes onto a lakeside dock in the summer's sun in Whistler.

  • If you do have questions while you’re out and about, a quick and easy way to get an answer is to text Ask Whistler . You can also connect via WhatsApp and use the free Whistler WiFi (currently available at Whistler Olympic Plaza, Whistler Town Plaza, Whistler Village Common, Village Square and the area near the Whistler Visitors Centre and new bus shelter).

During Your Visit

  • Knowing that Whistler’s parks and lakes can get busy, make sure you’ve got a Plan B up your sleeve. Think about visiting at off-peak times like first thing in the morning and in the evening (sunset picnic anyone?) and make sure you pack out what you pack in. Read more in, Know Before You Go: Whistler’s Lakes and Parks .
  • We’re looking forward to seeing the refreshed Rainbow Park , which was closed in 2023 but is slated to open on Canada Day 2024! They are still working on Phase 3 of the improvements so the beach and lawn areas remain closed, but the dog park area, washrooms, and Valley Trail are expected to remain open to the public. Learn more about this project on the RMOW site .

A family with young children walks through Whistler Village in the summer.

  • Check out the free Go Whistler Tours app , which features curated tours that guide you to unique experiences and locations throughout Whistler, from art galleries to nature walks.
  • If you’re a regular to Whistler, consider doing a hike or visiting a lake that you’ve not been to before (note that Whistler’s alpine network is typically covered until mid-July). We’ve got a plethora of information on hikes in Whistler for you to check out; as always AdventureSmart and follow the Three Ts for safe outdoor exploration (trip planning, training and taking the essentials).
  • Wildfires are a very real threat to Whistler in the summer when the weather gets hot and dry. Whistler’s fire danger rating gets updated daily by the BC Wildfire Service and when it reaches High or Extreme open fires of any kind are banned. That means no campfires, no tiki torches, no fireworks, etc. Do not throw cigarette butts (of any kind) onto trails, into forested areas, or out of car windows. If you see a fire call 911.

Two friends walk shop in Creekside Village in Whistler.

  • If you need supplies for while you’re here, maybe a new pair of trail runners, more buckets and spades for the kids, drool-worthy treats for the picnic – buy them locally. Not only does this support local business , but gives you a chance to connect with people who live here and might have a tip or two they’re willing to share with a savvy traveller.
  • Keep an eye on our events calendar to see what’s on this summer as events are coming back including the Summer Concert Series at Whistler Olympic Plaza, Crankworx and GranFondo.
  • Help Whistler with its environmental goals by drinking alpine fresh tap water versus bottled, avoiding single-use plastic, choosing active modes of transportation and using the compost and recycling bins in the Village and at the parks. Remember that Whistler is bear country, so please dispose of your waste responsibly and read up on how to be bear-aware . If a bin is full please take your waste back to your accommodation to dispose of, let’s keep wildlife wild.
