Audiences can prepare for "some kind of wonderful" when Bill Hanney 's award-winning North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) opens its 68th Anniversary Season with the Tony® & Grammy Award®-winning Broadway hit BEAUTIFUL - The Carole King Musical, about the early life and career of the legendary and groundbreaking singer/songwriter, playing from Tuesday, June 6 thru Sunday, June 18, 2023.

"I am very excited to get the 2023 season started having spent last season building back to welcoming full audiences once again, and what a spectacular show to return with. Carole King is a legend, and Beautiful will let everyone know the work it took to became one." said Bill Hanney , NSMT owner and producer. "This long running bio-musical is packed with chart topping hits, drama, and fantastic musical numbers, and we have a stellar cast set to bring her story to life. I am also excited to welcome back director and choreographer Marcos Santana who helmed last season's smash hit production of Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story which thrilled audiences and left them cheering for more, and I know he will work his magic again with Beautiful."

Long before she was Carole King , chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein , Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin , to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann , to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

With a book by Tony® and Academy® Award nominee Douglas McGrath . BEAUTIFUL features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin / Carole King and Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil , including "I Feel The Earth Move," "One Fine Day," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "You've Got A Friend," and the title song, "Beautiful."

Carole King will be brought to life at North Shore Music Theatre by Elena Ricardo who wowed audiences with her high-flying performance as Peter Pan in NSMT's 2018 production of Peter Pan. Elena understudied the role of Carole King in the Broadway production and recently played Carole at the Casa Mañana Theatre. The cast of BEAUTIFUL will also feature Jake Bentley Young ( Gerry Goffin ), Jessica Rush ( Cynthia Weil ), Jack Cahill -Lemme ( Barry Mann ), Reed Campbell ( Don Kirshner ), and Jean McCormick (Genie Klein).

The ensemble will include Elizabeth Adabale , Courtney Blackmun , Kobe Brown, Justin Michael Duval , Seth Eliser , Tiffany Frances, Rachel Gubow, Christopher McCrewell, Ashley McManus , Michael Anthony Nero, Chris Richie, and Allie Seibold . Andrew Burke, Tony Collins, Selene Klasner, and Giselle Amarisa Watts will be Swings.

The creative team for BEAUTIFUL will include Marcos Santana (Director/Choreographer), Camille Villalpando Rolla (Music Director), Jack Mehler (Scenic & Lighting Design), Travis M. Grant (Costume Design), Alex Berg & Don Hanna (Co-Sound Design), Rachel Padula-Shufelt (Hair & Wig Design), Kelly Baker (Costume Coordinator), Stephen MacDonald (Production Stage Manager), Dakotah Wiley Horan (Assistant Stage Manager) and Robert L. Rucinski (Assistant Music Director).

BEAUTIFUL is produced for North Shore Music Theatre by Bill Hanney (Owner/Producer), Kevin P. Hill (Producing Artistic Director), and Matthew Chappell (Associate Producer / Casting Director).

Tickets for BEAUTIFUL: The Carole King Musical are priced starting from $68 - $93. Performances are June 7 - 19, Tue - Thurs at 7:30 pm, Fri & Sat at 8 pm, matinees Wed, Sat and Sun at 2 pm. Kids 4 - 18 save 50% at all performances. $25 Student Rush tickets are available. For tickets and information call (978) 232-7200, visit www.nsmt.org , or visit the box office in person at 54 Dunham Rd., Beverly, MA. BEAUTIFUL is sponsored by Coastal Windows & Exteriors.

North Shore Music Theatre will continue the 2023 musical season with The Sound of Music (July 11 - 23), Jimmy Buffett 's Escape To Margaritaville (August 15 - 27), The Full Monty (September 26 - October 8), Elvis: A Musical Revolution (October 31 - November 12), and the annual production of A Christmas Carol starring David Coffee (December 7 - 23).

Beautiful – Carole King Musical Tickets

After 6 remarkable years on Broadway, the Tony, and Grammy Award winning, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical goes on tour, and it’s coming to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis! The inspiring true story of one woman’s remarkable journey from teenage songwriter all the way to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Featuring the string of pop classics Carole King wrote for the biggest acts in music, to her own life-changing, chart-busting success with Tapestry, Beautiful will take you back to where it all began, and onto a ride of a lifetime!

“Strikes genuine grace notes!” – NY Post

“beautiful is a joyous celebration” – entertainment weekly.

Featuring over two dozen pop classics, including “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “Up on the Roof,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and Natural Woman,” this crowd-pleasing international phenomenon is filled with the songs you remember, and a story you’ll never forget. The world of Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who wrote her first number 1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” at the young age of 17, for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was Carol Kings 1971 album, Tapestry, that took her music to the peak, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop for the decade. Since then, more than 400 of her compositions have been re-recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in hundreds of hit singles and 6 Grammy Awards.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by Douglas McGrath, it tells the story of the early life and career of Carole King, using songs that she wrote, combined with other contemporary songs by Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector, and others. The show is directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Josh Prince, scenic design by Derek Mclane, costumes by Alejo Vietti, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski, and sound by Tony and Drama Desk Award winning Brian Ronan.

Grammy Award Winner for “Best Musical Theater Album” of 2015

The original production of Beautiful received its world premiere at the Curran Theatre, San Francisco, in October 2013, with direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Josh Prince, and starring Jessie Mueller in a Tony Award-winning performance as Carole King and Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin. It made its Broadway debut at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014, winning two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. A West End production starring Katie Brayben as Carole began in February 2015 where it won two Laurence Olivier Awards. Also in 2015, the album of music recorded from the production won the Grammy Award Winner for Best Musical Theater Album and a film adaptation was announced with Douglas McGrath adapting his book into a screenplay for the big screen.

“Out of control amazing!” – The Wall Street Journal

“instantly joins the ranks of the irresistible” – the huffington post, “a must see” – nbc new york.

“Watching Beautiful, the new jukebox musical celebrating the remarkable life and work of Carole King, you may not feel the earth move under your feet. But the new Broadway show emerges as a slick and joyous celebration of female empowerment. Like Jersey Boys, Beautiful features a smart, well-crafted, and often funny book (by Douglas McGrath) that cleverly threads together a memorable catalog of early rock hits such as ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ and ‘Take Good Care of My Baby.’ It also boasts a winning central performance by Jessie Mueller as the shy Jewish girl from Brooklyn who only gradually comes into her own as a headlining voice of a generation… Beautiful fills the charisma vacuum with the substantial addition of King and Goffin’s friendly songwriting rivals Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, played with megawatt scene-stealing abandon by Anika Larsen and Jarrod Spector…” – By Thom Geier for Entertainment Weekly.

She wrote the soundtrack to a generation.  Beautiful  tells the touching and true story of chart-topping musical legend Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom: beginning as an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent, charting her rock ‘n roll songwriting with husband Gerry Goffin, exploring her relationship to fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and forging her path to becoming one of the most successful and enduring solo artists in popular music history.

Chock full of your favorite hits like “One Fine Day,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “The Locomotion,” “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and so many more, Beautiful  is more than just beautiful music— it’s an inspiring story of a groundbreaking female artist who forged her own path in the male-dominated music industry, finding her own true voice and moving the earth for us all.

A Letter From Lisa

by Lisa Shriver, Beautiful Director/Choreographer

A blonde woman wearing a black top and tan jacket smiling at the camera

I stood in front of a gym filled with students and parents. The music of “You’ve Got a Friend” swelled and, in my most emotive voice, I sang into the mic, “Close your eyes and think of me.” It was one line, but I felt like a star!

I fell in love with this song—not only because it gave me a chance to step into the spotlight, but because I was entranced by the beautiful melody and lyrics that made even a 12 year old feel like they were her own .

Many years passed before I really knew of Carole King, how her songs shaped rock n’ roll and how she redefined the role of women songwriters in the music industry.

A woman with long curly blonde-brown hair sings into a stick microphone with her eyes closed

Only then did I realize how much of Carole King’s music had scored my own lifetime of moments:

  • being serenaded with “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” by a high school crush shortly after the premiere of Top Gun
  • nursing a broken heart with “One Fine Day” on repeat, and
  • showing off on the dance floor of way too many weddings to “The Locomotion.”

It made sense that I knew the songs before I knew the writer.

One of the many unique qualities about Carole King’s stardom is that she never set out to be a star. Her music was the star.

A woman wearing a red dress with long curly blonde hair plays a black grand piano with shiny purple and gold globe lights shining behind her

And when she finally found her own voice as a lyricist and as a recording artist, she created one of the most iconic and beloved albums of all time .

Since its release in 1971, Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. With its raw and soulful songs, it solidified Carole King as a voice of her generation .

You hear a few bars of any track from Tapestry and, like seeing an old friend, you are immediately transported back to the moments, the relationships, and the experiences colored by the sound and emotion of these songs—moments like a 6th grade chorus concert and a 12-year-old’s chance to shine.

I hope you’ll warmly recall your own “moments” when you hear the music of Village Theatre’s production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical .

And I hope your time in the theatre will provide you with a brand-new experience to enjoy and remember.

—Lisa Shriver, Beautiful Director/Choreographer

WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL ABOUT?

HER NAME IS CAROLE KING. HER STORY IS BEAUTIFUL.

BEAUTIFUL is the untold story of Carole King’s journey from schoolgirl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.

Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent.

She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow , when she was just seventeen.

By the time she reached her twenties she had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll from Aretha Franklin to The Monkees , The Drifters , to The Shirelles .

She wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman , Take Good Care of my Baby , You’ve Got a Friend , So Far Away , It Might As Well Rain Until September , Up on the Roof , and Locomotion .

But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South, Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut. ● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack). Themes of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community permeate the program, as the piece is put in perspective alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate. ● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. ● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for orchestra, Symphony No. 9. Voted as the greatest symphony of all-time in BBC Music 2 Magazine, the evening-long work has beguiled audiences since its 1912 premiere by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. ● July 21 – Winner of the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition and recipient of many esteemed prizes, Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino* reunites with Alsop and makes his Ravinia and CSO debuts performing Fryderyk Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Also featured on the program are Bernstein’s joyous Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Stravinsky's timeless Firebird Suite. Alsop conducts the orchestra in Holst’s The Planets, followed by a suite from Falkenberg’s The Moons Symphony. Audiences will see science come alive and hear from planetary scientists, including Astronaut Nicole Stott together with the composer, as they discuss how Falkenberg’s symphony offers new perspectives for humanity to contemplate our home in the cosmos. ● July 28 – Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship alum Carolyn Kuan leads this year’s Tchaikovsky Spectacular, complete with Ravinia’s signature cannons in the 1812 Overture. Making her CSO debut, she opens the program with the complete music from the first act of The Nutcracker. Desirée Ruhstrat also makes her CSO debut as the soloist for the cherished Violin Concerto. ● August 2 – Conductor Valentina Peleggi, another TACF alum, returns to Ravinia and the CSO, following a guest appearance during last summer’s Breaking Barriers Festival, to join with esteemed pianist Jorge Federico Osorio on Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. Peleggi will also lead Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. ● August 4 – Music director, conductor, and arranger Kevin Stites explores the music of legendary performer and film composer Henry Mancini for the annual Gala Benefit Evening. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the stage and beyond” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis* 3 (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts. ● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre. The work, set in Crete in 1200 BCE and telling a story from the Trojan War, shines light on a talented group of singers. Starring are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra. ● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion between the opera performances. The program will feature both of the composer’s G-minor symphonies—the “little” No. 25, K. 183, and the “great” No. 40, K. 550—along with the Violin Concerto No. 5, welcoming James Ehnes as soloist on the violin. ● August 18 – Conductor Jonathan Rush, a frequent Ravinia guest in recent seasons and former assistant to Alsop, returns to the CSO podium. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage with Rush and the orchestra as the soloist for José White Lafitte’s Violin Concerto and Niccolò Paganini’s La Campanella

This year’s tony award nominees for best musical have never been so unpredictable.

Malea Joi Moon and the cast of "Hell's Kitchen"

“No use permitting some prophet of doom to wipe every smile away!” sings Sally Bowles in the musical “Cabaret.”

Well, I’m not here to erase every grin in Times Square, but I guarantee that a lot of folks on Broadway won’t be beaming come Tuesday morning.

That’s when the 2024 Tony Award nominations will be announced, and this year that list carries almost as much weight as the coveted prizes themselves.

The cast of Suffs.

“Pity the shows that don’t make the cut for Best Musical,” said a wag. “This year especially. It will be hard to get through the summer without a nomination.”

During the 2023-24 season, a whopping 15 new musicals opened — the widest field of the past 30 years at least. The competition, for audiences and awards, is as ferocious as the Sharks and Jets.

Or, to reference one contender, “ The Outsiders ,” as vicious as the Greasers and the Socs.

Ten of those 15 eligible productions are still running, but there will be only five Best Musical nominees called out (six if there’s a tie). So, more than half of what’s on could get the brush.

A Tony nod is a big deal for reasons beyond the prestige.

The lucky nominees get to perform on the CBS telecast for 4 million potential ticket-buyers, many of whom are hearing about these shows for the first time. And they’ll be able to do additional rounds of national press appearances right as summer tourists hit NYC.

However, that enhanced exposure will be tougher to achieve in what is the most unpredictable year on Broadway in recent memory.

Nobody in town is totally confident about what will be nominated, let alone what will win.

beautiful the musical tour 2023 tickets

Part of the confusion is that nothing new has emerged as a major box-office hit, a la “Hamilton,” “The Book of Mormon” or “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Some shows (“ The Outsiders ,” “ Hell’s Kitchen ,” “ The Great Gatsby ”) are chugging along, hoping for a Tonys boost. Others (“ Lempicka ,” “ The Heart of Rock and Roll ”) are on fumes, praying they’ll hail the Cash Cab.

Without grosses as their guide, the industry has looked to reviews for clarity.

Never miss a story.

The last two months, when nine of those musicals opened, were like presidential primaries.

Theater folk pored over critics’ appraisals on opening night trying to make sense of the March and April madness. I’ve never received so many baffled texts at 9:01 p.m.

But my cohorts and I, while liking (and loathing) a lot, couldn’t agree on what the show is.

So the culling comes down to the 44-person Tony nominating committee — and then the tastes of the 800-or-so Tony voters, including the “road voters,” a 100-strong group that lives outside of New York.

Dancers in illinoise

“The road will want ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ ” a source said of the Alicia Keys musical at the Shubert. “Probably the only one. ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ or ‘ Water for Elephants .’”

Another voter expressed particular fondness for “The Outsiders,” the touching show at the Jacobs based on S.E. Hinton’s teen novel.

Everybody admires “ Illinoise ,” a beautiful dance piece set to the music of Sufjan Stevens that opened Thursday at the St. James, but there are also whispered doubts of whether or not it’s a musical.

Who else has a shot? “ Suffs ” and “ Here Lies Love ,” maybe. But I bet the nominations throw a curveball.

While Best Musical is completely up for grabs, it’s a cinch to predict the winners of the other big three categories — even before the noms are uttered.

“Stereophonic” takes Best Play, “Appropriate” wins Best Revival of a Play, and “Merrily We Roll Along” has Best Revival of a Musical wrapped up.

Can the pricey revival of “Cabaret” starring Eddie Redmayne give “Merrily” a race? No dice, old chum.

The Bushnell announces seven Broadway series shows for 2024-25 season

The Bushnell Performing Arts Center in Hartford announced its 2024-25 Broadway series of musicals on Monday.

The slate of shows for the upcoming season includes the Neil Diamond bio-musical “A Beautiful Noise” Oct. 1-6, 2024; the return of Disney’s “The Lion King” Nov. 13-Dec. 1, 2024; “MJ the Musical” Dec. 10-15, 2024; a radically rethought revival of “Peter Pan” Feb. 4-9, 2025; “The Wiz” March 11-16, 2025; “Some Like It Hot” April 29-May 4, 2025; and “Back to the Future the Musical” June 4-8, 2025.

The schedule breaks down to two jukebox musicals, two refreshed and reinterpreted 20th-century musical classics and three musical versions of famous movies (one of them from Disney).

The Bushnell continues its tradition of hosting the first national tours of recent Broadway hits. Two of the shows, “MJ” and “Back to the Future,” are still running on Broadway as their first national tours commence. The Broadway production of “Some Like It Hot” closed in December after running for around a year. “The Wiz,” a revival of the 1974 Black version of “The Wizard of Oz,” is touring before it gets to Broadway, playing The Bushnell less than three weeks before it begins preview performances at New York’s Marquis Theatre.

Besides the seven shows in the subscription season, The Bushnell announced return bookings of two musicals that have already played the venue in recent years: “Les Miserables” from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3, 2024, and the concert-style British history lesson “Six” Dec. 31, 2024 through Jan. 5, 2025. Various tours of “Les Mis” have been coming to The Bushnell since 1989, most recently in 2017. When “Six” happens, it will be only two years since the first tour of the show about the six wives of Henry VIII played The Bushnell in January 2023.

Tickets are not yet available. Bushnell Broadway series subscribers are contacted first about renewing their subscriptions. Then, new subscriptions are offered to those not currently subscribing. Finally, months from now, single tickets will go on sale for the shows.

Of the seven subscription shows, five are the first national tours of new musicals that have never appeared at The Bushnell. The other two, “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz,” first came to The Bushnell decades ago but in very different forms. This new production of “Peter Pan” has been rewritten by playwright Larissa Fasthorse (Broadway’s “The Thanksgiving Play”), with a particular interest in reworking the original script’s objectionable depictions of Native Americans.

“Some Like It Hot” is based on the 1959 film comedy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. It’s not the first time the movie has been turned into a musical. A previous attempt, “Sugar,” by Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Peter Stone ran on Broadway in 1972 and (retitled as “Some Like It Hot”) played the Shubert Theatre in New Haven in 2002. This new one has a score by the “Hairspray” and TV “Smash” team of Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman and a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin. López has had several of his plays (including the world premieres of “Somewhere” and “Reverberation”) produced by Hartford Stage, which also commissioned (but did not end up producing) his Tony-winning epic “The Inheritance.”

Ruffin, best known as a writer/performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and for her now-defunct “Amber Ruffin Show” on Peacock, also had a hand in the tour of “The Wiz,” adding new material to the show’s book.

It took years, but The Bushnell has finally caught up with the backlog of Broadway series shows whose visits to Hartford were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The last straggler was “The Cher Show,” which was originally scheduled to play The Bushnell in November of 2020 and finally arrived earlier this month. This will likely be the first season since 2021 which has not had to make room for delayed runs of musicals originally planned for previous seasons.

The 2024-25 season begins in the fall. There are still three more Broadway shows coming in the current 2023-24 season: the “Wizard of Oz” prequel “Wicked” April 24 through May 12, “Beetlejuice” May 28 through June 2 and “Funny Girl” June 18-23.

The Shubert in New Haven announced its own 2024-25 Broadway series slate last week with “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Clue,” “Mean Girls” and “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of the Temptations.” All but one of those shows, the non-musical play “Clue,” has already played The Bushnell on earlier tours. Other Connecticut theaters that host Broadway tours, such as the Waterbury Palace, will announce their 2024-25 seasons soon.

For more information on The Bushnell’s upcoming 2024-25 season, go to the venue’s website at bushnell.org .

Canadian Rocker Tom Wilson Brings His Fascinating Life Story to the Stage with 'Beautiful Scars'

The world premiere of the musical adaptation of the junkhouse, blackie and the rodeo kings and lee harvey osmond songwriter's best-selling memoir about discovering his indigenous identity begins a run in hamilton on april 26..

Tonight (Friday, April 26) marks the official world premiere of Beautiful Scars, a musical based upon Tom Wilson’s best-selling 2017 memoir, Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Home . The play is being staged by Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Ontario, the hometown of Wilson, the charismatic rock-roots singer/songwriter, visual artist and author well-known on the Canadian music scene for his work in Junkhouse, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond.

The launch of the play has been keenly-anticipated, not just locally but beyond. Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood visited Tom Wilson during rehearsals for the play, and many Wilson friends and fans from Toronto made the trek to Hamilton for the first preview show on Wednesday, one attended by Billboard Canada .

advertisement

Wilson’s critically-acclaimed autobiography has already been adapted into a 2022 full-length film documentary of the same name, written and directed by Shane Belcourt. It premiered at the 2022 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival where it was one of the top ten films in the Hot Docs Audience Award race. It received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series in 2003.

Beautiful Scars is also the title of a 2015 album released by Tom Wilson’s solo project, Lee Harvey Osmond, and one of its songs, “Blue Moon Drive,” is now reprised in Beautiful Scars , the play.

Wilson had a very hands-on role in the creation of the play, and is credited as its playwright and co-creator, alongside noted playwright/actor Shaun Smyth ( Playing With Fire ). Its journey to the stage has not been an easy one, with a change in director being one obstacle. It is now helmed by Mary Francis Moore, who is also the Artistic Director of Theatre Aquarius.

In a recent interview I did with Moore for Hamilton City Magazine , Moore recalled that “My brother bought the book for me for Christmas when it was first published, and I loved it. I worked at another theatre at the time. I found Tom on social media and reached out to him, saying ‘I think the book is spectacular. Would you consider adapting it for a musical for my theatre?’ He wrote back to me, saying ‘I am already doing that, with Shaun Smyth at Theatre Aquarius.’ I had taught at Aquarius but was not in a position to develop a new work here. I thought ‘that’s great, but too bad for me!’”

As fate would have it, Moore later landed her current position at Theatre Aquarius, and, with Wilson’s blessing, took the reins of the project.

Tom Wilson may be something of a multi-media renaissance man, but theatre was not previously part of his artistic arsenal. “I am on a learning curve,” he admitted. “For the first two years of this process, I’d joke that I don’t actually know anything about the theatre. I’d also joke that I kept my backpack really close to me in case I’d be asked to leave so I didn’t have to pack things up!”

Tom Wilson’s deep involvement in the play did not extend to portraying himself onstage, however. “I know how to act up, but I just can’t act,” he confesses, with a deep chuckle. Intriguingly, his son and co-songwriter Thompson Wilson does appear in the play, as the younger Tom, in both a singing and acting role. This is Thompson’s theatrical debut, but, with the exception of musician Phil Davis (billed as Indigenous Collaborator), the rest of the seven-person cast comprises seasoned and acclaimed actors. Taking the crucial role of Tom Wilson is Sheldon Elter.

As with the original memoir, the essence of Beautiful Scars , the play, is Tom Wilson’s discovery, in his late-50s, that he was born to a young Mohawk woman from the Kahnawake community. Thanks to a fiercely guarded family secret, he grew up in Hamilton believing that his non-Indigenous adoptive parents, George and Bunny Wilson, were his real parents.

The revelation of his true heritage had a life-changing impact on Wilson, who has now reconnected with his birth mother, explored his Mohawk culture, and become a passionate advocate for Indigenous issues and the need for true reconciliation with Canada’s settler population. This evolution is being further explored in a second memoir Wilson is now completing for Penguin Random House.

In the musical, Wilson’s extraordinary life journey is told through a combination of narrative passages and renditions of songs he wrote and recorded with Junkhouse, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond. These tunes are sung by different cast members, with some featuring the full ensemble, with Junkhouse classic "Out Of My Head" playing a pivotal role in the play.

A talented backing band comprises drummer Gary Craig (Bruce Cockburn, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings), guitarist David Gray (Parachute Club) and bassist Anna Ruddick, under the musical direction of Bob Foster.

Of note are two new original songs co-written by Wilson, “Death Row Love Affair” and “Standing The Line.” The latter number is co-written with fellow Hamilton luminaries Daniel Lanois and Terra Lightfoot, and it provides a show-stopping and triumphant finale to the musical.

Beautiful Scars runs at Theatre Aquarius, 190 King William St., Hamilton, from April 24 to May 11. Tickets are available here or by calling 905-522-7529

Cindy Lee, 'Diamond Jubilee' album cover

Though it's not even on streaming services, the Calgary DIY artist's album has been blowing up in a refreshingly organic way, with concerts in Toronto and Montreal quickly moving to bigger venues.

Anyone who loves indie music has likely spoken these four words over the last month: Cindy Lee, Diamond Jubilee.

The new album from Calgary guitarist and pop experimentalist Pat Flegel, who releases music as Cindy Lee, has been the subject of immense online buzz.

The hype train started as soon as the two-hour album was released on March 30, with listeners praising Flegel's haunting, almost-otherworldly dispatch of '60s girl-group pop songs rendered in the style of '90s DIY recordings. Things picked up speed with the April 12 publication of Pitchfork 's Diamond Jubilee review , which accorded the album a score of 9.1, the highest since 2020's perfect 10.0 for Fiona Apple.

The album has quickly become a major story in the music industry, not just because of the rave reviews, but also thanks to the mystery with which it arrived. Diamond Jubilee seems to disregard all conventional wisdom in the contemporary music industry: the album is two hours long, and is only available as a Geocities download or a single YouTube video with no track time-codes. There's no Instagram ads, TikTok challenges or sponsored content to be found here, but most of Cindy Lee's upcoming tour dates are sold out, with Toronto and Montreal both upgrading to bigger venues.

In Toronto, Cindy Lee's May 17 show has moved from the 400-capacity venue The Great Hall to the 1200-capacity The Concert Hall.

"It's the most hype I’ve seen without anybody sending a press release out,” says Denholm Whale, who works with Transmit Presents , the Toronto promoter putting on the concert. Whale has been booking Flegel for over a decade, when the Cindy Lee project was first emerging out of the ashes of Flegel's revered post-punk band Women.

He says everyone he knows in the industry is talking about Diamond Jubilee , and the album's success seems like an indie rock throwback: a runaway album whose creator wasn't trying to have a runaway album. "Pat doesn’t really give a f--k about the industry — it's interesting to see the nostalgia for that," Whale explains.

Normally, when Cindy Lee comes to Toronto, the room has about 150 people in it. When Diamond Jubilee came out, Whale noticed ticket sales went from a few per day to thirty-ish. "I was like oh, I think people just genuinely like this record and they’re gonna come to the show," he says. The Pitchfork review led to a huge bump, with 200 tickets gone in one day. (Whale says a Pitchfork Best New Music designation is one of the few reliable causes of spiking ticket sales in general.)

Ticketing platform Dice has a feature called The Waitlist that helps prevent resales and gives promoters an idea of how many fans still want tickets. After The Great Hall sold out, the Cindy Lee show still had 450 people on the waitlist. "It all pointed to: keep going," Whale says.

He moved the show to the Concert Hall, the last 1200-capacity venue available in the city, and sold 600 more tickets immediately.

Online hype can help, but it's no guarantee

For Whale, the Cindy Lee show has been an exciting surprise. When promoters commit to a show, there's no real way of knowing how well it will do, Whale explains.

"It’s funny to me," he says. "I work with bands who have millions of streams and really great press and they sell like two tickets." Sometimes the opposite happens, with bands that have low streaming numbers but strong touring experience.

"It’s this whole picture," Whale says, of predicting sales. "Not one thing means anything, but as a sum you can actually make a good prediction of what’s gonna happen."

Another recent success was the Belarusian band Molchat Doma . Whale had booked the post-punk act before the pandemic, and then they got big on TikTok, and tickets kept selling, even during lockdown. "They jumped from The Garrison [350 capacity] to a sold-out Opera House [950 cap] before they had even been here." But it's even rarer for a whole two-hour album to break out without any particular viral moment.

Flegel's breakthrough is moving for people who have worked with him and loved his art for years. Whale points to Flegel's influence as an artist, particularly in terms of Women's guitar tones, which have cropped up on countless post-punk recordings since 2010. "Credit is very much due."

The buzz around Diamond Jubilee indicates both the beauty of the album itself and a broader excitement at the possibility that branding and endless self-promotion aren't everything. In a period where artists and labels are struggling to figure out how to break through the online noise, it's refreshing to see an artist so whole-heartedly reject the imperatives of the streaming economy, and to see that artist lauded, instead of chided.

Whether Diamond Jubilee 's success indicates a sea-change in album release strategies is a different, and arguably less interesting, question. But it suggests that there is a desire — amongst fans, industry members and artists — for music to find its audience in ways that prioritize artistry and community.

"Good music and good art does prevail sometimes, if the right people hear it," says Whale.

All-star Junction Trio ‘a new-generation supergroup’

Why would three young classical musicians with successful solo touring careers form a trio as a side gig?

In 2015, pianist Conrad Tao, violinist Stefan Jackiw and cellist Jay Campbell launched Junction Trio for two key reasons: the music and the musicianship.

“There are so many astonishingly good pieces in the repertoire,” said Tao, now 29. “We wanted to play trios by Ravel and Beethoven. The piano-violin-cello combination has a very defined heterogeneous quality. It’s beautiful.”

Jackiw and Tao are acclaimed soloists who play with orchestras all over the world. While Campbell has won praise for his solo work, he is best known as a member of the intrepid JACK Quartet.

In the publicity for the trio’s Carnegie Hall concert this Friday, Junction Trio was billed as the “new-generation supergroup.”

Next Sunday, La Jolla Music Society will present Junction Trio at the society’s Baker-Baum Concert Hall. The trio’s members are no strangers to the hall. Each of them has performed there before at SummerFest and all three are in this year’s SummerFest lineup (although at separate times).

The Junction Trio: Conrad Tao, left, violinist Stefan Jackiw and cellist Jay Campbell.

The idea for Junction Trio started when Campbell and Jackiw were on the same tour in South Korea. The cellist and violinist, now in their mid-to-late 30s, hoped to form a piano trio and contacted Tao through Facebook.

“We didn’t randomly message Conrad,” Campbell said. “We had played with a couple of other pianists, too. We loved Conrad’s playing. It made sense to get together to play, but not as our main job. It’s our passion project.”

The three American-born, American-trained classical musicians perform as Junction Trio when their schedules allow. Campbell called their short tours musical vacations. Tao agrees.

“It’s really nice that we all three have different things that we can draw on,” Tao said from a solo tour stop in Cincinnati. “We can ask each other for advice and hear each other’s perspectives. We firmly come from different places, but we share musical values.”

The group’s concert in La Jolla will begin with John Zorn’s Philosophical Investigations: Trialogue, which was written specifically for the trio by the famous avant-garde composer. Campbell has worked closely with Zorn and released two CDs of works he composed for the cellist, one in 2015 and the other in 2020.

Campbell described Philosophical Investigations as three distinct people having a conversation, but not always saying the same thing at the same time. It involves intricate timing and string-plucking, including on the piano.

“It’s in line with Zorn’s other work,” Campbell said. “It’s virtuosic and mercurial. A feature of his music is like jump cuts in movies or channel surfing on TV. There are these sudden interruptions to a musical thought.”

Tao explains it this way: “It almost has a bit of Looney Tunes, a rapidity sometimes. There’s a lot of playfulness along with dark, brooding expressions. It’s wonderfully exciting.”

Next up on the program will be Charles Ives’ Piano Trio, which the composer wrote in the early 1900s as a remembrance of his student days at Yale University. Tao, who is also a composer, believes Zorn and Ives to be kindred spirits.

“The second movement of the trio is a scherzo,” the pianist said. “Its title is TSIAJ, which stands for ‘this scherzo is a joke.’ Ives throws everything into that movement. I alternate between being a kind of bass drum and traveling marching band to being like a saloon pianist and then playing a dirge-like version of ‘My Old Kentucky Home.’ It’s an amazing, delightful over-the-top movement.

“The piece ends with a beautiful take on ‘Rock of Ages,’ played by Jay on the cello. We are left to wonder about Ives’ memories, our own memories and feelings evoked by this music.”

The closing piece of next Sunday’s concert is Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, widely known as the Archduke Trio.

“Performing that piece is a joy,” Tao said, “because it’s written in such a way that we can surprise each other live on stage, which is always great.”

For Campbell, playing Zorn and Ives readjusts his ears to an expanded palette, which he then can bring into the Beethoven piece.

“My hope is that it comes off a little bit more radical than maybe people think it is,” Campbell said. “That’s the hope anyways.”

Campbell’s main commitment with the JACK Quartet regularly finds him exploring an expanded sonic palette. The ensemble focuses on collaborating with living composers.

“We also play medieval and Renaissance music,” he added. “Music of that time that was experimenting with different types of complexity.”

The JACK Quartet, presented by Art of Elan and ArtPower, will perform at the Loft at UC San Diego next Monday, the day after Junction Trio appears at the Baker-Baum.

After Sunday’s concert, the three members in Junction Trio will disperse to perform at various summer festivals and engage in other musical collaborations.

When in San Diego, Tao hopes to find time for a nonmusical activity — riding roller coasters.

“It’s a good hobby because I haven’t found a way to turn it into work,” Tao said with a laugh. “Anytime I’m reading a cool book, I start turning it into work in my brain. There is no space in your brain when you’re riding a roller coaster!”
