With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. A Colonial Halloween in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Virginia

One of the best ways to enjoy Halloween is to head back in time. For those willing to venture into a spirit world of old , the Virginia communities of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown should be on your list. Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. Elementary-school-age children explore haunted settings and go trick-or-treating at Family Frights in Jamestown, celebrate fall and hear stories of ghostly encounters in Yorktown , or sit in on a Halloween-themed museum talk at the Haunting on D.O.G. The city offers two events worth noting, one at Walt Disney World Resort and the other at Universal Orlando. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights runs early September through early November and with its haunted houses, scare zones, attractions, and live entertainment, there's certainly no shortage of scare opportunities. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

While the event is two nights only, you can also go on one of the multiple tours being held on Halloween night.

The resting place of greats such as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, versatile musician Leonard Bernstein, and FAO Schwarz founder Frederick August Otto Schwarz, the long list of famous names and nature of Green-Wood including bird watching opportunities, and over 500 species, varieties or cultivars of trees and woody plants, there's plenty of reasons to visit the cemetery at any point in the year.

Famous Haunts in South Dakota

The Pennhurst Asylum is another hot spot for hauntings. The Baleroy Mansion was once dubbed the "Most Haunted Home in America." The story says that the carpenter who built the mansion murdered his wife in the main house. Since then, the home has been a buzzing bubble for paranormal activity. If you are with the kids, be sure to check out the annual Scarecrows in the Village, which showcases Peddler's Village wholly decked out for the holiday.

There are endless ways to enjoy this fine holiday in NOLA. Some of our favorites include taking a walking tour of St. Louis Cemetary #1, attending the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience, going to the New Orleans Vampire Ball, taking the kids to Boo at the Zoo, or heading out on a Ghost City Tour and Haunted Pub Crawl.

Halloween celebrations in big cities can absolutely be a blast—there's no denying that. But, in our humble opinion, the best Halloween towns in America are small towns. With historic homes, ghost stories, and tall tales passed down from generation to generation, no one sets the mood quite like 'em. There's also something incredibly special—and dare we say a little spooky—about spending the night of October 31st far away from the bright lights and crowded streets of more populous locales, and that's precisely why we've rounded up the best small towns to celebrate in right here.

When deciding where to head this Halloween, it helps to know a bit more about what kinds of fall festivals and spooky events you're in for. Looking for a haunted hotel to spend the night in? We've got those, too!

And parents, you'll want to pay special attention: Our list includes dozens of family-friendly Halloween activities. So go forth and find your perfect small town destination for this Halloween!

The Best Towns and Small Cities to Celebrate Halloween in the USA

In towns across America, Halloween is more than just an opportunity for children to stuff as much candy as they can fit in a bucket – it’s a time for kids and adults alike to pull out all the stops and put on a seriously spooky celebration.

best city to visit during halloween

Whether you’re wanting to race coffins or walk with zombies, we’ve found the best towns and small cities to get your spine tingling this Halloween. During our research, we looked for the destinations that offer the most unique takes on everyone’s favorite October holiday, from creepy puzzles for kids to solve to elaborate decorations that put your average Christmas lights display to shame.  The towns selected have populations smaller than 50,000 (and some smaller than 2,000) and we favored places where Halloween events are open to the public. The result is a diverse mix of celebrations: some notoriously scary and others just unadulterated fun. Destinations are ordered by geographical region moving east to west across the United States.

Laconia, New Hampshire

The city of Laconia springs to life during Halloween with a two-day pumpkin festival. One of the event’s highlights is the Zombie Walk, during which participants (often from gyms, dance studios and non-profit groups) transform themselves into the walking undead and shuffle through the streets, culminating with a Spook N’ Groove Dance Party. There’s also a Pumpkin Dump Derby, where competitors carve  pumpkins into makeshift vessels and race them on water. For thirsty revelers, a Beer Garden is on hand to serve up seasonal brews throughout the festival.

Salem, Massachusetts

Brimming over with a cauldron of history, haunts and magic, its month-long Haunted Happenings experience attracts more than a half-million visitors annually and is one of the largest Halloween celebrations anywhere in the world. Notable local attractions including the World of Wizardry, the House of the Seven Gables, the Witch Dungeon Museum, and the Witch House all take part in the event, and there’s even a Satanic Temple with original artwork by legendary artists Dali, Degas and Man Ray. Amid the horror are plenty of family activities such as the Good Witch Transformation tea time, potion party and costume ball.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

The Headless Horseman makes frequent appearances, adding an element of suspense. The town also boasts the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, a display of thousands of intricately-carved pumpkins arranged in eye-catchingly creative formations. Meanwhile the Philipsburg Manor, a historic gem, transforms into the Horseman’s Hollow, an interactive haunted attraction.

Pennsylvania’s premier haunted scream park, Shocktoberfest, has been hailed by some as the scariest Halloween destination in the country – and it’s easy to see why. Other highlights include a 50,000-square foot “Prison of the Dead” built in a condemned penitentiary, an escape room, games, live music and food trucks. While a large portion of the world considers Halloween to be largely for children, Americans of all ages take the holiday very seriously.

Starting as early as September, cities begin hosting their favorite eerie events designed to celebrate all things spooky – and most everyone takes part.

Across the USA this haunted season, you can discover Halloween events that are equal parts charming and creepy. Here are some of our favorite places to celebrate all things ghostly, macabre and just plain fabulous.

The Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Penned by Washington Irving in 1820, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” has permeated popular Halloween culture for literally centuries. Lucky for us, the town at the center of the story is very real and comes alive for a month-long Halloween celebration.

Take a tour of the historic cemetery by lantern light to learn about Irving and other notable citizens, or head over to the historic Philipsburg Manor, which is converted into a terrifying haunt known as Horseman’s Hollow .

If pumpkins are your thing, don’t miss the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , which features over 7000 carved gourds, the Museum of Pumpkin Art and even a pumpkin windmill.

Revelers during the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem, Massachusetts

As the epicenter of the grim witch trials of the late 1600s, Salem , Massachusetts , sits at the heart of the country’s most visceral Halloween lore. Its heritage played a starring role in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus , and its fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot year-round.

Visiting Salem during October, however, delivers a special type of energy, as the town embraces the year’s biggest opportunity to delve into its history. Take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city; visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum ; dive into the world of the unknown at the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo ; and top it all off by attending the annual Witches Ball , a masquerade held at the historic Hawthorne Hotel .

A large float with a huge Dracula figure at the front is illuminated by a strong of light bulbs. People dressed in elaborate costumes throw items off the float to people on the street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s no secret that New Orleans can throw a party like nowhere else – a talent that’s not limited to Mardi Gras in February. Many regard the city as one of the most haunted in the country: ghost tours abound throughout the year, making Halloween a particularly important time here. Hit the French Quarter during October for a supernatural celebration called  Krewe of Boo! , which brings Mardi Gras–esque flair to the spooky season.

The parade features what New Orleans does best – with a ghoulish twist: think hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads (locally sourced and make an effort to be environmentally friendly). The Krewe also hosts an annual Zombie Run , where zombies take to the streets like a scene out of World War Z .

Revellers march in costumes during the 49th Annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, New York, New York, USA

New York, New York

Head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October and you’ll find a live-action showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show , complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a three-dimensional cast shadowing the on-screen antics.

This tradition began in  New York City at the now-defunct Waverly Theater – and continues today through the work of the  NYC Rocky Horror  troupe. Check their website to see where they’ll be doing the “Time Warp” next.

While you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Village Halloween Parade , famed for its creativity and sheer size. Watch (or join in!) as giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood, and costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

A green witch float in the Sea Witch Festival parade, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Not all witches dwell on land, it turns out. If your vibe skews nautical, don your seaweed and celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware . Festivities include Halloween staples like a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick-or-treat for kids on the beach, and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.

13 Best Places to Visit for Halloween Around the World

From Mexico to Romania, here are 13 of the best places to visit for Halloween.

best city to visit during halloween

The spooky season is almost here, and there's no better way to honor it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins.

Now's the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavored and decor related. And don't worry — just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you always need to be in for a fright. Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe.

Salem, Massachusetts

It's almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It's a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it's a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you're all invited to join .

London, England

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It's a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it's just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we're sure they didn't have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honors the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it's a festival for the dead, it's by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honor of those who've passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honor them. Travelers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travelers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren't too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don't miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you're looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities.

Paris, France

Looking for a Halloween event that's très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you'll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussaint , or All Saints' Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honor their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris, arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween's past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of "All Hallows' Eve." While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation's Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Italy isn't exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you'll find plenty of ghoulish fun is in Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you'll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you'll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil's Bridge .

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it's not really a place where you'll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong's other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that's not to be missed, and you'll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city's famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the U.S. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city's event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you'll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it's a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrfying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to "coffins" in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

Mobile skyline, Alabama

Mobile, Alabama

As the cool autumn breeze begins to sweep through Mobile’s moss-draped oaks and historic streets, the spirits of this Gulf Coast city’s past edge closer to the veil between the dead and the living.

On the shores of Mobile Bay, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is home to an array of historic naval craft still standing guard over the nearby city streets. The park’s namesake battleship served in World War II and is rumored to house the spirits of past crew members whose phantom footsteps still clang along its corridors — responding, some say, to ethereal orders and the drum of machinery decommissioned decades ago.

At midtown’s sprawling Oakleigh Historic Complex , the city’s unscrupulous past returns to life between the walls of an 1833 mansion. Oakleigh House guests have reported disembodied voices, a lady in black, a dark-haired man in blue and unexplained cold spots in the home’s parlors and stairways.

Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska, may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about haunted activities, but this northern city has its own share of eerie experiences to offer.

The Hotel Captain Cook has only been open since 1964, but in that short timeframe, the structure has become shrouded in ghostly lore. Guests have reported encountering spectral figures, mysterious footsteps and unexplained knocks. The most famous ghost is believed to be the spirit of John "Jack" Sturgus, a former chief engineer who died during the hotel's construction. His ghostly presence is said to linger, perhaps still overseeing the hotel he helped build.

At the historic Anchorage Depot , ghost tours unveil chilling tales from the city's past, including the lingering spirits of railroad workers and passengers.

Tombstone, Arizona

A town with the most Halloween-appropriate name in the nation, Tombstone — famous for its Wild West history — is also renowned for haunted activities that offer visitors eerie and thrilling experiences. Join a ghost tour at the Bird Cage Theatre , where you to learn the lore of the spirits that frequented its stage in the past. Saddle up at the O.K. Corral , which hosts nighttime ghost walks through the grounds made famous by Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp.

Stroll along Allen Street, Tombstone's main drag, where many storefronts and hotels boast ghostly legends and stories. And don't forget to book a night in one of Tombstone's haunted hotels for a chance to experience paranormal activity firsthand or visit the lingering vestiges of patrons past at Big Nose Kate's Saloon , where you may spot ghostly apparitions and enjoy a drink in the company of the lost.

11 Best Cities for Halloween in the US

Whether in the big cities or the small towns of America, Halloween celebrations are an absolute blast. With tall tales passed down through generations, ghost stories, historic homes, and an extra-festive dose of holiday spirit, nothing sets the mood quite like Halloween. The word ‘Halloween’ comes from ‘Allhalloween,’ which comes from the old English word for ‘All Hallows Eve.’ Since it’s the evening before All Saints’ Day (November 1st), Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October every year. The best city for Halloween in the US, including small towns, makes celebrations incredibly special – and dare we say spookier too! After all, small towns away from crowded places have a certain spook element already going on. And larger cities, well, there’s something eerie about celebrating the festival in populous locales too!

Originally the custom comes from a Celtic tradition in Ireland (see below for more), and due to a large number of Irish immigrants, Halloween came to the United States of America.

New york city, new york, salem, massachusetts, new orleans, louisiana, buena park, california, sleepy hollow, new york, anoka, minnesota, st. helens, oregon, independence, kansas, ceredo and kenova, west virginia, estes park, colorado, chatham, massachusetts.

We begin with the place that has one of the biggest Halloween celebrations in the world, New York City ! In fact, the celebrations in the Big Apple are the gold standard of Halloween celebrations, making NYC the best city for Halloween. All the action is focused around the Village in Lower Manhattan, which practically shuts down during the massive Halloween Parade. The origins of this iconic parade go back to 1973 when puppeteer Ralph Lee created it. Today, it attracts more than 2 million spectators and 60,000 participants in the parade. You’ll see everything from giant puppets and elaborate costumes to even dancers, fire breathers, etc.

While spectators can watch the event for free, you’ll need to wear a costume if you want to participate in the parade. Spectators can show up early and grab a spot along 6th avenue if they want to skip the long general admission line. Or, you could purchase skip-the-line tickets or tickets to the annual “Special Theme Costume” section of the parade.

If you’re still left wanting more after the parade, head on this Ghosts of Greenwich Village Exploration Game Tour , It will certainly satiate your spooky pangs.

It’s hard to exclude Salem when it comes to everything spooky, isn’t it? Salem has a notorious history on the road to becoming the best town for Halloween; it was the setting for the infamous 1692 witch trials. However, today it has an immeasurable appeal for those who’re seeking some real-life holiday magic and supernatural oddities. Magic shops, witch-trial reenactments, and witch museums fill the city during the Halloween season. The month begins with the Grand Parade full of performances and festive vehicles and floats.

You could watch the witch trials come to life at the Gallows Hill Museum or bring your pets to the Howl-o-Ween Pet Parade. However, those who love haunted places should hop on board the Ghosts & Legends Trolley. The eerie ride drives yous past spots such as the House of the Seven Gables. A horror festival, a witches Halloween ball, and a psychic fair – Salem during Halloween has it all. It’s no wonder that Salem sits at the heart of the most visceral Halloween lore in the U.S.!

It’s no surprise that America’s most haunted city, New Orleans , is also the best city for Halloween! The fact that NOLA can throw parties like nowhere else is no secret, and Halloween is no exception. The Big Easy, as the city is famously called, boasts lots of events focused on the supernatural and voodoo history of the region. The biggest Halloween party of them all is the Krewe of Boo parade, which takes place in the gorgeous French Quarter, one of the USA’s top tourist attractions .

Besides participants donning extravagant costumes, you’ll also see them tossing candies to kids and riding spectacular floats. You could also check out the amazing Skeleton House on St. Charles Avenue, which is decorated with – you guessed it right – skeletons every year! If all this isn’t spooky enough for you, then maybe the 2-Hour New Orleans Haunted Cemetery and City Night Tour will scare the daylights out of you. In fact, ghost tours abound by the year, so those who love everything scary can visit NOLA throughout the year.

The Halloween capital of SoCal is Buena Park, one of the best towns for celebrating this scary holiday. This region transforms into “Boo-uena Park” during Halloween, with the famous Knott’s Berry Farm  theme park becoming the “Knott’s Scary Farm”! In fact, it’s not just the first but also the United States’ longest-running Halloween theme park. With interactive zombie experiences and scary mazes, it’s right up a spook lover’s alley. If you’re traveling here with kids, there’s also a less intense Knott’s Spooky Farm experience for younger kids with more trick-or-treating and Snoopy and fewer scares. Other things to do during Buena Park’s Halloween include the Silverado Days Festival, Rock & Brews Monster Beer Fest, and the Vampirate’s Halloween Show at the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure theater.

Spooky cemeteries, thousands of carved pumpkins placed on a carousel, and the legend of the headless horseman; now this is what we call a Halloween celebration! Welcome to Sleepy Hollow, the place for everything sinister and the best city for Halloween! The town is the famous hometown of the Headless Horseman Legend by Washington Irving. So, it’s no surprise that the town treats Halloween as a year-round vibe and not a month-long festival!

Those who’d love to embrace the holiday spirit of this so-called spooky town have tons of things to do around Halloween here. One of the most popular things to visit is the 300-year-old Van Cortlandt Manor. Every year during Halloween, it gets an epic makeover for the Great Jack-‘O-Lantern Blaze. You could also explore the historic Lyndhurst Castle or visit the iconic Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving rests. Finally, there are also spooky street fairs, haunted hayrides, cemetery tours, and dramatic performances of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The Haunted Hayride follows the same path as the legendary and eponymous tale, which takes you across the historic Old Dutch Church, the (in)famous wooden bridge, and into the woods. Boo!

The lively community of Anoka in Minnesota is famous as the “Halloween capital of the world” and is the best town for celebrating Halloween. The mission here has been the same since the town was established in the 1920s – to provide everyone with fun ways to celebrate the scary holiday. The town supposedly held the first Halloween event in the country as a method of keeping kids from creating mischief and pulling pranks. Today that has manifested into one of the country’s best Halloween celebrations. Think parades, bonfires, runs, scavenger hunts, parties and balls, and scarecrow contests galore.

Begin your celebrations by looking out for goblins and ghosts at the Anoka Haunted House. Later on, enter the scarecrow contest or show off your finest pumpkin carving skills at the Pumpkin Carving Contest. The Grande Day Parade, Minnesota’s largest, sees costumes, floats, and spectacular light displays. As you walk through the town, you can even admire the handiwork of people who’re competing in the House Decorating Contest. Fancy a Halloween marathon? Put on your best costume and participate in the Anoka Halloween Gray Ghost 5K Run.

St. Helens is qualified to be the best city for Halloween. Why? Because it was the setting for the iconic Disney movie “Halloweentown!” In addition to being a spooky Disney movie setting, the town also celebrates a massive annual giant pumpkin lighting. This charming town just a few miles north of Portland , St. Helens, became a mega-Halloween town after the 1998 film was released. Today, Halloween in this city is all about a fabulous costume parade, haunted houses, a haunted hearse and car show, a monster fun run, and a giant pumpkin lighting ceremony.

Flag off your Halloween activities by checking out the decorations at the town square and watching the lighting of the Great Pumpkin. After a family-friendly haunted mansion tour, follow the Scarecrow Trail and see the goings-on of the Scarecrow Contest. You could also be part of a spooky storytime, pack a whack-a-witch game, or go on a scavenger hunt. Wrap up the day with a tour of the Haunted House.

‘Queen City of the Trails’ Independence in Kansas is yet another best town for Halloween. This lovely town is famous for its unique 9-day “Neewollah” festival, which is Halloween spelled backward! But that’s not all. It’s the largest annual event in the state and has seen as many as 75,000 visitors make it here. What’s more, the family-friendly event features a host of activities such as carnivals, food festivals, parades, and more.

Meanwhile, grownups can strut their Halloween stuff at the DooDah Parade, which has everything from unusual creatures and bearded beauties to the odd drill team. Imagine a crossover of Halloween and Mardi Gras – that’s right! However, if you want spooks, then don’t miss the Shattered Souls Haunted House, southeast Kansas’ largest haunted house .

While in Independence, visitors shouldn’t miss the Shattered Souls Haunted House & Shatter Vision 3D, the largest haunted house in southeast Kansas.

If you want to see how West Virginia celebrates Halloween, head to the twin cities of Ceredo and Kenova. These two small towns in West Virginia team up every year to host the phenomenal two-day-long C-K AutumnFest. Think a host of orange-hued fall fun such as tractor shows, festivals, and bake-offs. However, the absolute best part is definitely the famous Pumpkin House, where 3,000 jack-‘o-lanterns are put on display. It’s no wonder that these two towns are a hotspot for Halloween enthusiasts. Also, don’t miss the Great Scarecrow Hunt and the popular Nightmare at Dreamland Haunted Trail. If you’re here with your kids in tow, there are many food vendors and kids’ activities that families will love.

Estes Park is one quiet and serene mountainside village – so the spookiness is obvious! It’s most famous for being home to the historic Stanley Hotel, the inspiration for the hotel in Stephen King’s “The Shining,” and one of the world’s most haunted hotels . Hence, it’s no surprise that in October, the spookiness is in the very air, and you’ll find lots of Halloween-focused events. Horror fans must attend the “Shining Ball” to see theater characters, while others can attend murder mystery dinners and costume contests. When you get to Halloween night, head out for trick-or-treating fun. Families will love the Autumn Gold Festival, which has everything from pony rides and face painting to beer, bratwursts, and live bands.

The scenic seaside town of Chatham in Massachusetts is the best city for Halloween. The charming Cape Cod town is famous for its annual “Pumpkin People in the Park” event. Every October, the denizens create quirky and fun pumpkin creations to display on the lawns. You can see them everywhere; outside homes, in public parks, and even in green community spaces. What’s more, this town also hosts its very own Oktoberfest event the Saturday before Halloween, complete with activities and foodie fun. The beautifully carved pumpkins make for a unique and rather gorgeous backdrop. Finally, on Halloween night, you can even go trick-or-treating while clicking pictures of the beautiful pumpkins about town.

  • Dia De Los Muertos in Mexico, also known as the Day of the Dead, is nothing like Halloween. In fact, the two-day somber event remembers those who’ve passed on and is one of the best annual world festivals worth the trip .
  • The 96-year-old Drake Hotel in Chicago hosts a much sought-after haunted theme tour during Halloween, which is almost always booked.
  • Halloween actually comes from an ancient Celtic festival. When Irish immigrants fled the potato famine in the mid-1800s to come to the United States, they brought the tradition of Halloween with them.

BannerImg

These days, when we celebrate Halloween, what often comes to mind are kooky costumes, scary decorations, and lots of sweets. However, there’s so much more history to this holiday than many realize. Back then, people would adorn costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts. Today, it is an occasion to dress up, go trick-or-treating, and take part in many other festivities! How about experiencing Halloween in an entirely different way this year. With so many destinations across the world brimming with Halloween spirit, why not travel to a new destination that has its own traditions and ways to celebrate Halloween. And since it’s a popular holiday across the globe, there’s surely no shortage of Halloween destinations to travel to. Come let’s discover some spooky and fun places to celebrate Halloween this year.

Table of Contents

A Brief History Of Why We Celebrate Halloween

The very name “Halloween” comes from the old European celebration of All Hallows’ Eve, the eve of the Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day (also known as All Saint’s Day). During this festival, people celebrated the hallows (meaning saints, not magical objects!). People would even dress up as saints and go door to door reciting songs, and asking for “soul cakes” – the origin of today’s Trick-or-Treating.

All Souls Day Belgium

Many other Halloween customs we follow today are also influenced by the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain . Celebrated at the end of October to mark the changing of the seasons and the shortening of days, it involved connecting with the dead. People believed that the boundary between this world and the next was especially thin. Over time this evolved into a more light-hearted celebration, which traveled across the Atlantic with Irish and Scottish immigrants. By the 20th century, it had turned into the costume-wearing, pumpkin-carving, candy-eating holiday we all know and love.

Edinburgh Halloween

Much like Ireland, Scotland has Celtic roots and also has many traditions related to Samhain. Even after the advent of Christianity, many of these customs remained. These include “guising,” where children go from door to door carrying lanterns made out of turnips in costumes for sweets or coins, as well as apple dunking, where you must retrieve an apple from a bucket of water using only your mouth. Halloween is such an integral part of Scottish culture that it has become the subject of many poems, most famously ‘Halloween’ by Robert Burns. According to him, Halloween is “thought to be a night when witches, devils, and other mischief-making beings are all abroad on their baneful midnight errands”. If you plan to visit Scotland this Halloween, make sure to check out Edinburgh’s Royal Mile with its creepy vaults, underground passages, and unsolved mysteries.

Where does Halloween come from?

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic celebration, Samhain, and was celebrated in Britain and Ireland. The festival celebrates the end of the harvest and the coming of shorter days. It is one of four Gaelic season festivals. The Celts would gather around ancient passage tombs, which were considered by some to be portals to the Otherworld. During this time, it was thought that the barrier between worlds was thinned, and spirits were able to cross between realms.

The festivals included bonfires, dancing, costumes, sacrifices, and feasting. Most of our Halloween customs have evolved out of these ritual festivities. Costume parties and trick-or-treating antics were primary a British and American thing for a long time, but now the festivities have spread to countries all around the world.

The little city comes alive with fireworks, parades, costume contests, and execution reenactments.

Visitors can explore the Salem Witch Museum, housed in the former home of Judge Jonathon Corwin, one of the judges responsible for the guilty verdicts. On Halloween night, magic shows, séances, and even a witch’s ball keep the celebrations going late into the night!

2. Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is a mystical land of fairytale castles set in the misty mountains. It is the home of Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler on which Dracula was partially based. Bran Castle is known as Dracula’s Castle. It was not and has nothing to do with him, but the castle does have a pretty amazing setting that lends itself to creepiness. The castle is vampire-mania year-round, but it certainly elevates during the Halloween season. The castle offers guided Halloween tours, laced with Transylvanian lure. You can visit the childhood home of Vlad the Impaler, complete with a torture museum, in nearby Sighisoara.

While in the area, you should also visit Cluj-Napoca. Not only is it another hauntingly beautiful Transylvanian mountain town, but it is also home to the Hoai-Baciu Forest, one of the spookiest places on the planet. The forest is a mass of twisted, gnarly trees, that are always shrouded in mist. The forest is known as the “Bermuda Triangle of Romania,” as there are countless local tales of persons disappearing into the forest under mysterious circumstances, as well as a large number of UFO sightings. One look at this forest, and you will understand why it is so steeped in legend. It is seriously a creepy place.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is primarily known for Mardi Gras, but it is also the most haunted city in the United States. With the heavy influx of early Black African religions from the Caribbean, New Orleans has always been one of the hubs for voodoo practitioners in the United States. The streets of the French Quarter are lined with voodoo shops to peruse if you are so inclined.

Visit the LaLaurie Mansion, home of the infamously cruel serial killer Madame Delphine LaLaurie. Dawn your best costume and join the Halloween street party on Frenchman Street. Tour some of the scariest haunted houses in the world. Watch the Krewe of Boo Parade, take a guided tour of The Gardette-LaPrete Mansion, home to the largest mass slaying in New Orleans history, tour the hauntingly beautiful, world-famous cemeteries, and of course learn all about this city of ghosts and goblins on our app-lead New Orleans ghost tour!

4. London, England

The dark, gloomy cobblestone streets of London provide the perfect ambiance for ghost stories and haunted tours. Jack the Ripper found the streets of White Hall an ideal hunting ground to complete his dirty deeds, and the Tower of London was known for its brutal torture tactics and numerous executions. The city celebrates Halloween big, and there is an abundance of ghost tours and Halloween events in the city.

Visit the London Dungeon, which recreates a series of the city’s most macabre stories, including that of Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd. Take a tour of the Tower of London. Book a nighttime Jack the Ripper walking tour to revisit the infamous murder sites. Visit the site of William Wallace’s execution, or take the train out to Hampton Court Palace, which is reportedly haunted by two of Henry VIII’s wives. Descend below the bridge for the haunted London Bridge Experience and London Tombs, where you will find your way through an underground maze filled with famous, nefarious characters. Top off your week with a showing of the gothic romance, Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. There is so much to do in London for Halloween that your only issue will be narrowing down the options.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Another city steeped in fog and shadowed by rain clouds, is the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the city where the Harry Potter series was written, and many of the key locations in the stories are based on Edinburgh icons. Harry Potter walking tours are popular here, as well as too many walking ghost tours to count.

Take a guided tour of Real Mary King’s Close and the seedy underworld vaults of Edinburgh. If you prefer your antics a bit more lighthearted, then hop on the Comedy Horror Ghost Bus Tour. The Edinburgh Dungeon is very similar to London’s with scary rides and local ghost stories.

The Samhuinn Fire Parade is a special event thrown in Old Town, on Halloween night. It consists of a dramatic battle between the Kings of Summer and Winter. The winner is decided by Cailleach, a Celtic goddess. The festival is meant to usher in winter and includes wild performances, music, dance, and lots of fabulous costumes.

6. Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca is a stunning city in Southwest Mexico, and it’s famous for stunning cathedrals and fabulous cuisine. The day after traditional Halloween, the city is transformed for Day of the Dead celebrations. Dia de Los Muertos is a time to celebrate and honor dead loved ones. Personal shrines are set up in homes and businesses, with elaborate displays of flowers and candles. The celebrations overflow into the streets with lavish parades, full of fanciful dancers with intricately painted faces. The party concludes in the main square and continues all night long!

7. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has a long history of violence from the hay day of the mob to modern-day gang rivalries. Old school gangsters filled the waterways with the bodies of their victims, and paranormal believers tell stories of screams echoing out from the Clark Street Bridge. Clark street is where the infamous Valentine’s Day Massacre took place, and it is said to be the home of several apparitions. You can hang out on Archer Avenue and offer a ride to the “vanishing hitchhiker.” John Dillinger’s ghost haunts the alley next to his death site at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater. Even Lincoln Park used to be a cemetery and is reported to have frequent paranormal activity.

For a thoroughly spooky tour of the “Windy City,” check out our Chicago ghost hunt! You’ll explore the paranormal culture and history of Iroquois Theater, Hancock Center, and much more on this ghoulish journey through one of America’s most haunted cities.

8. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a small town in the Ozark Mountains that happens to be home to “America’s most haunted hotel,” the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa . In its long history, the gorgeous, old, mountaintop hotel has served as both a girls’ college and a hospital… both fodder for paranormal activity! The hotel staff does a daily ghost tour, and they even host an annual paranormal event for researchers from all over the world called the Eureka Springs Paranormal Weekend. Most of the ghosts are friendly and tend to stay in their room or area. The hotel is still a working getaway for romantic weekends, but don’t be surprised if your lover’s weekend turns out to be a threesome.

Eureka Springs is a fun town with lots of quirky shops selling folk art and tasty treats. The food is fantastic. The traditional architecture is quite charming, and you can visit the huge Christ of the Ozarks statue and the gorgeous Thorncrown Chapel, a fairytale glass chapel in the woods. Catch a magic show, or join one of the guided walking ghost tours or underground city tours!

9. Savannah, Georgia

The beautiful Antebellum mansions and dripping Spanish moss are generally seen as charming, but on a foggy autumn evening, they can certainly lean towards spooky! The Old Southern City has a rich (if deplorable, in parts) history, and ghost stories abound about former slaves and Confederate soldiers.

Book a room in one of the haunted hotels, and learn the legends of the area on Let’s Roam’s Savannah ghost tour , where you’ll visit Madison Square, The Pirate’s House, and The Marshal House. Finish off your evening in costume and experience excellent Halloween drink deals on a Congress Street bar crawl.

10. San Francisco, California

Not only is San Francisco an old gold rush town, most of which are creepy, but it is home to one of the eeriest places in America, Alcatraz Prison. A tour of “The Rock” is spooky any time, but a haunted night tour, in the foggy bay, adds a whole nother level of chill. The city, along with its neighbor Los Angeles, is one of the most popular places featured in scary movies.

The 1889 Queen Anne Hotel is gorgeous but notoriously haunted. Mary, apparently a former maid, is often seen going about her duties, but hey, she has a habit of unpacking guests’ bags for them, which is nice. In a city with so many haunted jaunts, it’s hard to know where to. We got you covered! Just download our scavenger hunt app, and explore the best of “The Gold City’s” paranormal past on our “San Francisco Ghost Rush” scavenger hunt !

11. Prague, Czech Republic

Bell-ringing nuns, arguing priests and prostitutes, and a monk’s mistress roam Old Town in Prague, and they aren’t the only ones. Prague has at least 100 known specters and is considered one of the most haunted cities in the world.

Ghost aside, Prague has a plethora of creepy spots. You can take a Medieval dungeon tour, explore the infamously haunted Prague Castle where multiple specters reside, cross over Charles Bridge and look for the 12 headless men, and visit the incredibly creepy Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital and cemetery. In fact, Prague has several spooky old cemeteries.

Top it all off with a stop by Sedlec Ossuary. It’s a Roman Catholic chapel that was built over an ancient cemetery. The bodies were moved into the church and assembled into coats of armor, wall decorations, and a horrific, huge chandelier. The church is thought to house skeletons of between 40 and 70,000 people. Talk about spine-chilling!

12. Sleepy Hollow, New York

It just sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Sleepy Hollow is, of course, the stomping ground of Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane. Rumors abound that locals still see the horseman in The Old Dutch Burying Ground, where Irving himself is buried.

Join a lantern-guided tour of the cemetery. They are offered day and night. The town embraces its heritage on All Hallows Eve. There are hayrides, a street fair, and haunted tours of the town’s Gothic mansions. One such mansion, the Philipsburg Manor, is completely transformed during the month of October to be the realm of the Headless Horseman. The 300-year-old home is filled to the brim with Ichabod’s court of witches, vampires, and soldier zombies.

As you might imagine, Sleepy Hollow gets pretty busy during the holiday, so you might want to book your tours pretty far in advance!

13. Long Beach, California

Long Beach isn’t inherently a spooky place, but they do throw a giant Halloween celebration. It is also home to the Queen Mary cruise liner, which ranks among the most haunted places in the United States.

One of the scariest Halloween celebrations can be found in Long Beach, California. Here, you can check out the most haunted place in the world—the Queen Mary . Docked off Long Beach in California this cruise ship is one of the coolest and most unique places to celebrate Halloween.

Dark Harbor starts on October 1st each year and runs for the entire month offering terrifying experiences to those who dare to visit. This month-long event features six mazes haunted by more than 200 spirits and ghosts, many inspired by the actual spirits that are said to haunt the ship. Visitors should also expect rides, more monsters, live shows, delicious food, and beverages. It’s worth noting, this experience is not for young children and no costumes are allowed other than on Halloween.

14. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is home to the happiest place on earth, right? It’s famous for beaches and Disney World theme parks. Mickey is there. How can it be on this list? Well, Disney just so happens to put on a pretty fantastic, family-friendly, Halloween Party.

“Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party” runs from mid-August through October 31st. There’s a parade, a special show by the three Hocus Pocus sisters, a fireworks show, a dance party, and miles of trick-or-treating trails. It’s a Halloween festival that the whole family can enjoy!

If you want a little adult thrill while in Orlando, you can visit some of the city’s haunted locations like Spook Hill, the Oviedo Lights, or the Enzian Theater. By most standards, even these paranormal hot spots are pretty family-friendly.

15. Dublin, Ireland

Ireland is famous for its St. Paddy’s day events and some of the world’s friendliest people, but it’s also steeped in Celtic history, which means its Halloween roots go deep. Some say the Samhain ceremonies started in Ireland, though there are debates. The Irish know how to throw a party, and Halloween is no exception! Dublin is a city that can be eerie on any given day, with its towering Gothic cathedrals and overall grayness. It mirrors London and Edinburgh in that way. Check out all the haunted spots in Dublin on our ghost tour: The Dark, The Dead, The Doomed!

The second option in Ireland is to head to Derry City for the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival where you can experience, a Sanhaim-like festival with a parade, bonfires, fire dancing, haunted houses, and much more!

This Underrated Midwest City Calls Itself 'Halloween Capital Of The World' For Good Reason

children halloween costumes scary

If you're looking to celebrate Halloween at its very best around the United States, you might go to New York City's iconic Village Halloween Parade or head to Frenchman Street in New Orleans for an unforgettable street party — but you might also visit Anoka, Minnesota. Avid hikers may know that Minnesota is home to gorgeous waterfalls and lakeshores and astronomy enthusiasts will know that it's one of the few places to view the Northern lights in America , but it's also the birthplace of the American Halloween parade. Believe it or not, this little midwestern town has what might just be the oldest Halloween celebrations in the United States, and residents of the town continue to hit the streets and get into the Halloween Spirit every October.

If you're someone who starts planning their costume, carving pumpkins, and putting up decorations on the first day of October (or maybe even before) you'll find your people in the Halloween Capital of the World. Head to Anoka any time during the season of the witch and you'll find fun community events to get you in the mood for Halloween. Most exciting of all is the Grande Day Parade, a massive halloween parade where you can see ghouls and ghosts of every age decked out in their costumes before the big day.

Anoka has been serious about Halloween for over a century

When it comes to trick or treating, most kids today seem to focus on the treat part of the tradition — but around the turn of the century the youth of Anoka were all about the tricks. From soaped windows to tipped outhouses and ripped up fences, the destructive pranks that came every Halloween were getting to be a problem for residents of Anoka. Rather than cracking down on the petty crimes, in 1920 the community leaders of Anoka decided to give local kids something else to do to celebrate the holiday: a parade.

It was a hit. As described by the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce , the big night was planned weeks in advance. Hundreds of children turned out wearing homemade costumes for the parade and were rewarded with trick or treat bags of snacks and candy. As time went on, the festival grew to include bonfires, contests, and scary spectacles of all kinds to entertain participants of all ages. In 1937, a special act of Congress officially declared Anoka the Halloween Capital of the World in recognition of their dedication to the holiday.

How to get in on the Halloween fun

enormous pumpkins weigh in

Today, Anoka's events for Scary Season have grown far beyond a single parade. If you can't miss being at home for the big night, that doesn't mean you can't celebrate in Anoka this October. This festive and family-friendly Halloween destination has events all month long. You won't want to miss the big parade that made this place the Halloween Capital, but if you have a young child in your life you might want to bring them to the Big Parade of Little People, too.

If you have a competitive spirit, you can admire the enormous pumpkins in the great Pumpkin Weigh-Off [pictured], check out the scarecrow contest, and compete in the pumpkin carving competition (just make sure to finish carving before the event starts, the judges only judge finished products). Check out the official Anoka Halloween website for dates, times, and details on how to attend. While it might be planned by and for the local community, everyone is allowed to participate.

5 Halloween-themed things to do in San Diego this fall

'the phantom of the opera'| balboa theatre.

As part of its centennial celebration, the Balboa Theatre has programmed Silent Movie Mondays, and will kick off the series with a horror classic, “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), starring Lon Chaney, who was known as “The Man of A Thousand Faces” for his brilliant make-up effects.

Chaney is a horror icon who created his own insanely epic make up and reportedly contributed to directing some of his scenes. The moment from “The Phantom of the Opera” that was seared into audiences minds in the '20s was the famous unmasking scene. There were reports (or maybe just publicists’ stories) that people actually fainted at the reveal and theaters were encouraged to carry smelling salts in case their patrons were overcome with fright.

And what better way to punctuate that reveal than with a live organ accompaniment.

“The organ is the perfect instrument for horror,” said Russ Peck , organist for the Fox Theatre Film Series at the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego. “And what's the greatest reveal in ‘Phantom’? It's when the mask gets pulled off. He screams and she screams and I mash down on the keyboard when he is revealed. Then for her reaction, I go way up and create the sound of a scream, which is a combination of a diminished cord and a bunch of extra stuff thrown in.”

I know audiences have become jaded, and acting styles and film technology have changed, but I encourage you to place yourself in 1925 and imagine how this early experiment in cinematic horror might have played out.

To help you travel back in time, the Balboa Theatre will have Peck accompany the film on the theater’s historic Wonder Morton theatre organ.

“I try not to play anything that was written after the release date so it will create this time machine experience for the audience,” Peck explained. “When they come in and see a movie made in 1925, they're going to hear it the way an audience in 1925 might have heard it. I've probably played this movie more than any movie in my career, which should come as no surprise. It is the prototype of the horror film. Truly a prototype, and I love playing it.”

He also loves playing the Wonder Morton.

“It speaks into the room,” Peck said with glee. “It is a wonderful instrument. It fits the theater beautifully. It's got just a jaw-dropping sound, and the acoustics in the Balboa are so great. I'm proud to play it and proud to take care of it.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and join a parade showcasing San Diego’s “Best Dressed.”

Details: " The Phantom of the Opera " kicks off Silent Movie Mondays on Oct. 28 with live organ accompaniment at the Balboa Theatre. 868 Fourth Ave., San Diego. $24-$39.

'Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors' | The Old Globe Theatre

Another Halloween icon makes an appearance this fall in San Diego — Count Dracula. But when Bram Stoker’s bloodsucker rises from his grave at the Globe the intent will be to induce blood-curdling screams ... of laughter.

Globe artistic director Barry Edelstein was so pleased with how playwrights Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen reimagined "A Christmas Carol" as "Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show" that he commissioned them to tackle Dostoevsky's “Crime and Punishment” in 2023 as a comedy.

“The more seriously something takes itself, the easier it is to send it up,” Greenberg noted.

Rosen agreed.

"'Crime and Punishment,' even the title, feels like 'eat your vegetables,'" Rosen said. "There's a sense about it that seems so dramatic that it seemed like it was daring us to make fun of it or to find humor in it."

Now the playwriting duo sink their teeth into Stoker’s Victorian classic to hit another comic vein. You can expect the same mix of irreverent humor blended with affection for the source material. The comedy of terrors begin as vampire hunter Van Helsing and a motley crew chase Count Dracula through the English countryside in a madcap race to prevent him from claiming another innocent victim.

“There’s no sound quite as happy as that of a theatre full of people laughing hysterically, and 'Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors' delivers that every night,” Edelstein added.

This production, which Greenberg is directing, includes mild language, mild violence and mature themes. It also employs a small cast taking on multiple roles for added fun.

Take note of these special performances: Insights Seminar on Sept. 24; Post Show Forum on Oct. 1; LGBTQIA+ Theatre Night on Oct. 4; and Open-Caption Performance on Oct. 12.

Details: " Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors " runs Sept. 20 through Oct. 27 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center in Balboa Park, 1363 Old Globe Way. $98-$125.

'Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show' | Cygnet Theatre

Sean Murray has a long history with Rocky Horror.

The play was written by Richard O’Brien in 1973 and turned into the cult classic film in 1975 with Tim Curry owning the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, self-described as "a sweet transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania." Both the play and the film pay loving and irreverent tribute to the science fiction and B-horror movies of the 20th century, so perfect for the Halloween season.

“My young impressionable teenage self that went to the Strand Theatre and saw 'Rocky Horror' was moved very much by that message as a young kid in high school. And high school is all about trying to figure out where you fit in, and this movie experience gave me permission to not care and just be who you are and not try to fit in with all the gangs or cliques or whatever," Murray said in a 2016 interview.

Murray played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the San Diego Repertory Theatre’s production of "The Rocky Horror Show" in 1991 and returned to the role in 2016 at Cygnet Theatre, where he also served as director. For that production Murray noted it was all about how glam rock killed the malt shop rock of the 1950s. That meant Frank-N-Furter used his androgynous sexuality as a challenge to the sexually repressed characters Brad and Janet and to the audience.

This month, Cygnet is remounting the show with Murray at the helm but with Nathan Madden making his Cygnet debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. It will be interesting to see what direction this production takes. The ads promise: "Sexy. Satirical. Stripped of inhibitions." I will hold my breath in eager "an...ti...ci...pa...tion" for the end results.

Advisories: Adult language, depictions of violence and sexual themes.

Details: " Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show " runs Sept. 11 through Oct. 20 at Cygnet Theatre, 4040 Twiggs St., San Diego. $44-$73.

'Poe and His Progeny' | Villa Montezuma

Write Out Loud once again raises author Edgar Allan Poe from the grave to lend his particular brand of macabre good cheer to the Halloween season.

This year the event is called "Poe and His Progeny" and offers an evening with Mr. Poe and other like-minded authors of the macabre.

Write Out Loud artistic director, Veronica Murphy said, “For this haunting season, we are once again partnering with the Friends of Villa Montezuma to bring our audience a chilling literary experience. The mansion’s music room serves as a backdrop for these stories by some of our favorite authors.”

Prepare to meet Poe and his guests, Mary Shelley, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Guy de Maupassant and others, for the retelling of "The Fall of the House of Usher," "Frankenstein," "A Tress of Hair," and more, while immersed in the Victorian backdrop of the Villa Montezuma. Performers Paul Maley, Laurence Brown and Rhianna Basore will grip you in the imagery of these Gothic masters.

Details: " Poe & His Progeny: An Evening with Mr. Poe and Other Authors of the Macabre " will be performed Oct. 25, 26, and 31 and Nov. 1 at Villa Montezuma, Palace of the Arts,1925 K St., San Diego. $30.

Paranormal Exploration| Various

Okay, Halloween is fast approaching and at some point we are not interested in just watching plays and movies that feature creepy, supernatural happenings — we want to actually experience them!

I cannot guarantee that you will meet a ghost or have a paranormal encounter, but if you visit the Whaley House or go on a ghost tour of San Diego then you will find out about the haunted places that exist in San Diego and where people have reported paranormal activity.

The Whaley House boasts that it is the most haunted house in America, and you can visit it to find out if you agree. The origins of the property prime it for some haunted vibes since it was the original site of the Old Town gallows and thief James “Yankee Jim” Robinson was hanged there. The house was built by Thomas Whaley in 1857, and served as San Diego’s first commercial theater, a general store, and the second County Courthouse. It is also supposedly home to some spirits who refuse to move on.

Visitors can take a 30- to 40-minute daytime guided tour through the house and discover its historic legacy, and hear all the myths and misconceptions that have circulated about it over the centuries. Or, and this is my recommendation, take the two-hour After Hours Paranormal Investigation Tour that provides access to the rooms where the Whaley family lived and died, and participate in an actual paranormal investigation with a guide. The tour promises hands-on experience with the latest ghost hunting equipment within small intimate groups.

If you want to explore beyond the Whaley House, there is Haunted San Diego Ghost Tours that can take you to three spirited homes, one resurrected hotel, and a dusty graveyard. This is a guided tour and not a haunted house experience like Haunted Trails .

Ghost Tours describes itself as, “I wouldn’t call us scary as there are no clowns or monsters jumping out at you (no jump scares). You get environments, stories, and folklore. If you are looking for jump scares this is not the tour for you. Things can and do happen on the tour, and people have gotten a bit scared. It’s not because we scared them, it’s rather the environment and the person. We also bring crazed tongue ‘n’ cheek humor, think puns and wordplay. If you don’t want cheesy one-liners, this is not the tour for you.”

Here is a list of some additional haunted places you can explore on your own. I had a ghostly encounter at the Horton Grand involving some drapes that seemed to open and close on their own when I was not looking.

Details: Paranormal exploration can be enjoyed via either The Whaley House Museum , daily, at the Whaley House, 2476 San Diego Ave. with daytime or after hours tours ranging from $15-$99; or Haunted San Diego Ghost Tours , daily, bus tour meeting address: Old Town, 2415 San Diego Ave, San Diego, with multiple bus and walking tours to choose from ranging in price from $20-$58.

BONUS: 'Secret Morgue 5: Creatures and Monsters Edition' | Comic-Con Museum

I want to personally invite you to pull up a slab as I co-host six cinematic cadavers for you to dissect with my fellow Film Geeks at Secret Morgue 5: Creatures and Monsters Edition.

Yes, this is shameless self-promotion, but I can't help myself because I just get giddy with excitement as my high holy day of Halloween approaches. All I can think about is sharing my passion for horror with any willing victims. So if you love the genre as much as I do then please join me for a 12-hour horror movie marathon at Comic-Con Museum.

It’s a "secret" morgue so we do not reveal the titles of the films until they play on the screen, but this year's theme is creatures and monsters so you can expect something beastly. Each movie will be introduced by a nerdy expert or the filmmaker. Event includes two meals, six films, raffle prizes, an art show, vendors, and swag for those who survive all six films. I'm dying to see who comes.

Details: Secret Morgue 5: Creatures and Monsters Edition is a 12-hour horror movie marathon that takes place Sept. 28 at Comic-Con Museum,   2131 Pan American Plaza, San Diego. $50-$75.
