At a distance of 166 km from Hyderabad, 83 km from Nalgonda, 149 km from Guntur, 551 km from Vizag & 190 km from Vijayawada, Nagarjuna Sagar, located in Nalgonda district of Telangana, is one of the most prominent Buddhist centers in India. Nagarjuna Sagar is one of the most popular tourist places to visit near Hyderabad and one of the best weekend getaways from Hyderabad city. Known in ancient days as Vijayapuri, meaning 'The city of victory', Nagarjuna Sagar takes its present name from Nagarjuna, one of the most revered Buddhist monks lived in 2nd century AD. It is also a place of immense archaeological significance & excavations revealed this place as a center for the propagation of Buddhist teachings in South India during 3rd century AD. It was ruled by the Sathavahanas and subsequently by the Ikshvaku rulers during ancient times. One of the early river valley civilizations took birth here. Enthused by the peaceful environs of this place, Buddhists made this land a great hub of learning, setting up one of the four major Viharas here. Further down in history, one of the first Hindu kingdoms of South India, Ikshvakus made this city their capital. Today known as Nagarjuna Sagar, this holy land now boasts one of the world's tallest dams. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, Nagarjuna Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagarjuna Konda Museum, Ethipothala Waterfall are the famous attractions of this place. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, built on River Krishna between the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was completed in 1966. It has a height of 124 m and a length of over 1450 m with 26 crest gates. The lake created by the dam is the third largest manmade lake in the world. There is a viewpoint at a distance of 4 km from the dam that offers a panoramic view of the amazing landscape. The dam serves the irrigation needs of the region and is also a source of hydro-electricity. Nagarjuna Konda, where the ancient Buddhist excavations are found is in middle of the waters of Nagarjuna Sagar and can be reached by a boat. Steam boat rides are available to the dam where the turbines can be seen in action. Nagarjuna Sagar has some medium to budget accommodation options available. Telangana Tourism operates a wonderful cottage on the banks of Sagar Lake, called Vijaya Vihar. Hyderabad airport is the nearest airport, about 153 km away. The nearest railway stations are at Macherla (23 km) and Nalgonda (83 km). Macherla has trains from Guntur, Nadikudi, Vijayawada and Bhimavaram while Nalgonda lies on Secunderabad-Guntur line and connected with Chennai, Vizag, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Kochi, Coimbatore, etc. Regular buses connect Nagarjuna Sagar with cities like Hyderabad, Warangal, Guntur and Vijayawada. The best season to visit Nagarjuna Sagar is from September to January while the Peak Season is from September to December. It usually takes one full day to visit all places in Nagarjuna Sagar.

Nagarjuna Sagar Stay review
Good Points: 1. Location is excellent right on left side of river. Offers great view of river and dam. 2. Can be booked online from AP Tourism office , there is one at Shilparamam Night Bazaar. 3. Tariff is reasonable, 50% off on week days(Monday to Thursday) 4. Rooms are spacious, amenities include Balcony with great view, AC, TV. 5. Swimming pool is good, there is lot of open space, play area is reasonable for children. 6. Restaurant is available. 7. Only good stay option in the area. Bad Points: 1. Food in restaurant is very, very basic and limited. Staff is not excited to have you. For variety and much more tastier food try the Siddharata Resorts hotel 2kms away. 2. Fittings in room can be dicy, example door handles can be loose, AC makes noise, ants and spiders can be found roaming around. Maintenance is very average which is a shame considering the potential of the place. Overall: Prefer it for accommodation, view and playarea BUT go to Siddharatha Resorts for food. More

We booked A/C deluxe room, there was just an amazing view from the room balcony. Very refreshing mornings looking at the water reservoir and spending some time in the park which has a view of it. Rooms were basic, but very spacious and clean. Food was just ok (not good). All their campus lights are solar and we went on a rainy day, so very dark outside in the evening which spoiled the evening a little. But the morning there is just awesome! There is another hotel nearby (just 1 Km before Haritha, I forgot the name), which has good food. And, if you are used to drink lemon water, then carry your own lemons, no lemons in both the places:-)
APTDC's Vijay Vihar is a destination in itself--we were bowled over by the property. The lawns overlook the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam's reservoir and are perfect for lazy weekends spent catching up on reading. If not manicured, the lawns are reasonably well-maintained, and very photogenic. In fact, more maintenance would jar the untouched feel this place has. While the rooms are well-fitted and, for the most part, habitable, the washrooms are shabbily kept. You would not expect hygiene to be a concern at a 2100 INR per night room (standard AC/weekend), especially at a government-run establishment. This is something the hotel's management needs to look into. (We occupied three rooms on this trip and the washrooms were not all equally shabby, so it could be a consistency issue.) Every room has a sit-out which overlooks the lawns and the reservoir--this spot has charmed me into planning another trip to Vijay Vihar, despite the washrooms! The in-house restaurant serves hearty vegetarian meals and a few non-vegetarian dishes (a la carte). Their food is homely and fresh and the restaurant boasts of a brilliant view. (Yes, again! This place is all about the view.) We found the hotel's atmosphere very peaceful and its staff courteous and responsive.
We stayed there for one night and liked the place for it's location and overall setup. We never had food in this hotel except for breakfast which was ok. In suite where we stayed, we had a small fridge with water bottles and soft drinks canes, they charge extra cost for that. Swimming pool was clean and big, enjoyed that. You should book in advance and online booking is the best option I guess.
I was travelling to Sagar for 1 night. It was ok. The food in the restaurant wasn't good but the subsidised bar was good. The service was poor but don't expect more from a govt run hotel. The view is superb. This is the reason to choose it.
We drove from HYD to the Dam- took us 3 hours on the way to and 2.5 hours on the way back. The resort in itself has a great location, overlooking the lake that leads to the dam. We stayed in a suite room on the ground floor which were huge with 2 queen sized double beds and sofa's. The geyser did not provide hot water, luke warm it was and the a/c was working, The TV was a 14 inch small thing which had no cable - reason this is externally sourced and there was a power cut or some other issue through the entire trip(one night). Food is horrible..full of chillies and alcohol is limited, however there are ways out. For booze there is a wine shop just outside the resort who sells beer etc on the MRP unlike the mark up in HYD. For food get out of the resort and turn left, drive to a hotel 2 kms down the road called Siddharth hotel, they I have heard have some better options. The free b'fast at Haritha is idli, vada, dosa only. In a nutshell good place to go if you are friends...food is not great if you have kids as you may not want to slum it out...

Exploring a destination...
The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.
But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.
• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too
• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!
• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!
