7 Great Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

With kid-friendly ships and family-favorite experiences, these are the best family cruises and cruise lines..

Dave Parfitt

The launch of Disney Cruise Line in 1998 was a game changer for family cruises. Now in its third decade of operation, Disney Cruise Line consistently tops the list of best cruise lines for families. And its newest ship (for now), Disney Wish , is unquestionably one of the best cruise ships for kids and teens ever made. But Disney isn’t the only major player in the family cruising space.

A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

Great Family Cruises and Cruise Lines for Families

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

1. Disney Wish

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From an action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , the ship offers a virtually endless supply of things to do.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids Sail Free: 7 Cruise Lines with Kids Cruise Free Deals This Year

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on sea grass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL’s constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Pirates, princesses, super heroes, and a thrilling water slide with a three-story drop are just a few of the fun features that make this a kid-favorite ship on one of the best cruise lines for families. In 2013, Disney added the AquaDunk high speed thrill slide and Marvel Avengers Academy kids club. In 2018, a Tangled dinner theater restaurant made its debut.

WATER WORLDS: 50 Best Cruise Ship Water Parks for Kids and Tweens

As one of the smaller ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic can be a less overwhelming experience for younger kids and first-time cruisers, especially given the trend among family cruises to be bigger and louder with every new ship. (The fabulous Disney Wonder is similarly sized.) But there’s more than one reason to consider a Disney Magic voyage in 2024. This year, the ship will be the first to sail to Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , in the Bahamas.

3. Disney Treasure

Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line’s sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco .

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called “Disney The Tale of Moana” in the Walt Disney Theatre. Other shows on performed on board will include “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure.” Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. That means you can enjoy two distinct dinner shows in the Worlds of Marvel and Plaza de Coco restaurants, and all of the Broadway-style shows on stage during one family cruise.

4. Icon of the Seas

A brand-new class of ship made its way to North America in 2024, and it started with Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40-plus ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that hosts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

FAMILY CRUISES: 5 Best Cruise Ships to Entertain Your Teen

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There’s also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. And of course you’ll also find the Royal Caribbean staple FlowRider surf simulator and the Lost Dunes mini golf course. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island that features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park open air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship’s seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge). There’s also an adults-only beach area called The Hideaway.

5. Wonder of the Seas

Wonder Dunes - Deck 16 Aft Starboard Wonder of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships debuted in early 2022 and instantly ignited buzz that they might be the most kid-friendly cruise ships in the entire world. At 1,188-feet long and 18 decks tall, there’s plenty of room for families to spread out and find entertainment onboard the Wonder of the Seas . Two dedicated private teen spaces onboard make vacationing with teenagers a little easier. In fact, teens aged 16 and up can even enjoy a massive teens-only hot tub that literally protrudes over the edge of the ship on Wonder of the Seas ‘ deck 15.

SCENIC VOYAGES: Everything You Need to Know about River Cruises in the USA

Grade school kids and even the littlest ones have it pretty great, too. For big kids there’s an enormous multiple-deck play area called Wonder Playscape . For the youngest passengers, there’s the Adventure Ocean play area full of soft toys and games for toddlers. And a playground with climbing equipment gives them a space to work off their energy. Wonder of the Seas also has the most amazing family suites around. They come complete with two levels of space, an in-suite slide, table tennis, and plenty of room for the whole family.

6. Oasis of the Seas

When it launched in 2009, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the world, accommodating more than 5,500 passengers per voyage and cementing the line’s place among the best cruise lines for families. After a reimagining 10 years later, Oasis of the Seas is still a popular option for family cruises with its Caribbean-inspired pool deck, rock climbing walls, and Perfect Storm trio of multistory waterslides.

Among the many reasons that make Royal Caribbean one of the best cruise lines for families is that its  Symphony of the Seas  builds upon the strengths of the line’s other Oasis Class ships, all of which also boast the incredible twin dry slides called the Ultimate Abyss, which spiral down 10 decks from the top of the ship.

7. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian cruise line.

What makes Norwegian one of the best cruise lines for families? For one thing, you’ll never hear “I’m bored” from kids. And with its three-story race track, two escape rooms, The Rush and The Drop dry slides, The Wave waterslide, immersive virtual reality games, Topgolf simulator, mini golf, waterpark, splash ground, and kids’ clubs, your family’s biggest problem on the Norwegian Viva might just be deciding how to balance all the activities with quiet relaxation.

GO ALL IN: These 6 Cruise Lines Offer the Best Themed Cruises

The Norwegian Viva arrived in North America in December 2023 and offers Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early 2024 before heading to Europe through November. The ship’s Observation Lounge has panoramic 180-degree views to soak in the scenery, or take Insta-worthy photos on Oceanwalk’s glass walkway. After playing the day away in port or on the ship, your family can enjoy dinner followed by a live performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical , based on the cult-classic Tim Burton film.

8. Carnival Panorama

Carnival cruise line.

One of Carnival Cruise Line ’s newer ships, the Carnival Panorama ‘s many kid-friendly features have already made it one of the best cruises for families. The Panorama has supervised kids programs in three different age categories, a massive aqua park, the popular SkyRide aerial attraction, SkyCourse ropes course, and the first SkyZone trampoline park at sea.

DON’T OVERPAY: How to Save Money on a Carnival Cruise (with or without Kids)

In addition, Carnival’s exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises provides “Seuss at Sea” experiences on family cruise vacations, such as Dr. Seuss Bookville, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. Based in Los Angeles, Carnival Panorama sails week-long round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2024.

9. Caribbean Princess

Princess cruises.

Made famous by the classic ’80s TV series The Love Boat , Princess Cruises now hosts more than two million passengers each year. Kid-friendly Caribbean Princess underwent an extensive renovation in 2017 that boosted its family offerings to include Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center, HD Movies Under the Stars, and the Reef Family Splash Zone (the line’s first splash zone at sea).

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: 11 Best Outdoor Movie Screens for Your Backyard Staycation

Caribbean Princess will be 20 years old in 2024, but another extensive drydock refurbishment in 2022 has kept the ship from feeling dated. Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for “Discovery at SEA” activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Msc cruises.

MSC Meraviglia, Polar Aquapark

Unless you’re a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

FIRST-TIMERS: 19 Things to Know Before Your First Cruise with Kids

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. And Meraviglia’s Polar Aquapark has three different waterslides, including a high-speed “champagne flute,” that easily make it one of the best cruises for families. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. There’s also a Sportsplex facility for basketball, tennis, squash, volleyball, pickleball, mini golf and five-a-side soccer.

11. MSC Seascape

The U.S. flagship of the MSC Cruises brand, MSC Seascape was designed with families in mind and offers plenty of options for onboard entertainment. The cruise line’s partnership with LEGO includes a DUPLO room for children ages three to six and a second LEGO room for kids ages seven to 11 with the opportunity to earn a LEGO Master Builder certificate. Teens have three different themed areas to engage with their peers.

At night, Robotron offers a personalized DJ experience where you can curate your musical journey with colors and music preferences.

MSC Seascape sails from Miami on Bahamas and Caribbean family cruises, including a visit to MSC Cruises’ private Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve . Ocean Cay features two miles of white sand beaches and a variety of family-friendly activities such as snorkeling, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming. Some family cruises dock overnight at Ocean Cay, allowing you to watch the spectacular Lighthouse light show.

12. Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity cruises.

An upscale cruise line with prices to match, Celebrity Cruises appeals to families with older children or multigenerational groups looking for luxurious family cruises. Celebrity Equinox is not the newest ship in the line (its inaugural sailing was in 2009), but this kid-friendly cruise ship received an extensive overhaul as part of the “Celebrity Revolution” in 2019 and continues to impress with its family cruises in 2024.

COUPLES CRUISES: 7 Best Cruise Lines for Couples (and Their Most Romantic Voyages)

Traveling to new places is always a thrill, but it can come with some challenges. For example, which side of the road are you supposed to drive on ?

best cruise destinations for families

Cruises simplify the bulk of your vacation planning and transportation, as everything you need is in one convenient package.

A family cruise line will keep your children entertained day and night. I’ve rounded up seven of my favorites, which I’ll share in the first part of this guide.

Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

The 7 Best Family-Friendly Cruise Lines

1. disney cruise line.

Discover how enchanting life at sea can be on a Disney Cruise Line.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.

Your cruise will stop at Castaway Cay if visiting a Caribbean or Bahamian island. This island is exclusively for cruise line guests. Your day at Castaway Cay will include food and refreshments, beach access, pools and water slides, trails, and yoga classes.

Oh, and there’s all-you-can-eat ice cream, which will delight children of all ages.

The family-centric staterooms offer television with in-room movies, a fridge, plenty of storage, and split bathrooms so the family can maintain its privacy.

Disney magic comes to life on the Disney Dream, an enchanting cruise experience.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.

4. Symphony of the Seas

Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.

Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Dive into the Horizon pool, which is open day and night (although there are dances and parties at night, so maybe visit sans kids).

Your kids will adore the F1 simulators, full-sized bowling alley, sportsplex, and Polar Aquapark with its sloping, looping enclosed slides.

Mini and Juniors Clubs give the kids a safe and fun place to play if you need to drop them off, as the rooms are bright, colorful, and full of toys.

7. Disney Wish

The Disney Cruise Line collection has recently expanded, adding Disney Wish to the ever-growing fleet. This ship has some claims to fame you’ll only find here, such as theatrical Frozen or Avengers -themed dining experiences.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Make your next family vacation something truly special on the Celebrity Equinox through the Celebrity Cruise Line. Deck 15 has all the amenities a family needs.

For instance, you and the kids can learn how to blow glass at the Hot Glass Studio, which is not something you see on every cruise ship.

How about some croquet or bocce on the Lawn Club? The kids’ club will watch your children between three and 12, offering lunch, dinner, and overnight stays if needed, and the ship even offers babysitting services in your cabin.

12. Norwegian Encore

Traverse the world on the Norwegian Encore, traveling from Alaska to Seattle or from the Caribbean to Miami. Adventure calls on the Encore, including many of the fun activities for families featured on other Norwegian cruise ships.

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad has partnered with National Geographic for a kid-friendly adventure program.

Royal Caribbean

For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Collectively, the ships offer ice skating rinks, simulated surfing machines, zip-lines, bumper cars, laser tag, carousels, and thrill slides. The Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes fun science experiments, while teens get to party in their own disco. The new largest ship in the world, the 6,998-passenger Wonder of the Seas , boasts a fantastical undersea-themed Wonder Playscape, an outdoor playground with climbing walls, slides, games, and interactive features — such as a mural featuring sea creatures that come to life at the slightest touch. The ship sails from Barcelona and Rome (the port of Civitavecchia) this summer and fall. Seven-night sailings from $952 .

Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Teens also have dedicated spaces onboard: Vibe for teens ages 14-17 and Edge for those between the ages of 11-14. Three-night Bahamas sailings from Port Canaveral from $1,751 in winter 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral on Mardi Gras this summer from $549.

RitzCarlton Yacht

Ritz-Carlton's all-suite Evrima yacht comes staffed with an on-board youth counselor.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Norwegian Prima will be cruising from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), beginning in December. Seven-night western Caribbean sailings in winter 2023 from $849.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Seven-night Discovery Princess sailings to Alaska this summer from $399.

Lindblad Expeditions

For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The program is available on cruises in the Galapagos, Alaska, Baja, Mexico, and Antarctica—all places you can spot wild creatures and the kids are encouraged to record sightings in a field book. Nine-night summer sailings in the Galapagos from $7,710.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

On the luxury side, Ritz-Carlton’s first yacht , the all-suite Evrima , launches in late August with year-round signature Ritz Kids programming. Kids ages 4-12 get a dedicated space staffed by a full-time youth counselor. The creative program features an environmental element—kids may participate an upcycle art challenge or a water-sampling science experiment. Unlike the complimentary programs on mainstream lines, this one comes with an additional charge: $45 each for three-hour morning and afternoon sessions, and $65 for early-evening programming. Seven-night Caribbean sailings from San Juan from $4,900.

The 11 Best Cruise Lines and Ships for Families and Kids in 2024

Cruising has long been a popular way for people to travel, especially for those that are retired. There’s something about getting to enjoy an endless amount of food, drinks, and onboard activities while the ship takes you from one destination to another. It’s surely a tempting way to see the world.

As cruise lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean continue to introduce show-stopping attractions that kids love, such as roller coasters and laser tag, families are getting more and more into cruising, too.

However, as with any vacation parents and families consider taking with kids, we have to ask: what are the best cruise lines for families?

The answer is, it depends.

Just like when you choose a hotel, families look for certain amenities for a cruise vacation.

Entertaining kids on any vacation is usually top of mind when planning a trip. A kid-friendly cruise line will have entertainment for its youngest sailors . Kids’ and teens’ clubs, pools, and water slides are just a few of the kid-specific amenities that you’ll find on a lot of the cruises on this list.

Higher-end cruise lines like expedition cruises offer robust educational programs for kids as well as adults. A family-friendly cruise might also have a place for the adults to relax such as a spa or adults-only area.

The cabin size matters, too, just as it would at a traditional hotel or resort .

Larger families may prefer a suite over an inside cabin. But either way, the square footage matters — even more so if you’ll spend quite a bit of your time onboard the ship.

And lastly, food might be a factor in deciding what cruise line would be best for your family. Luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will no doubt have a superb menu, but they may not be expert kid-pleasers like Disney Cruise Line when it comes to food.

Ocean Cay is MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.

There are 3 types of cruises to choose from — ocean, river, and expedition cruises.

Ocean cruises are what most people have in mind when they think of taking a cruise. Most cruise lines have at least a few ocean cruise ships in their portfolio and they most popularly frequent the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska , and Hawaii.

River cruises have traditionally been more popular with older cruisers but are now appealing to the younger crowds as well. River cruises can be found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Most cruise lines don’t have kid or family programs and some outright don’t allow kids under 18, though Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have partnered to offer river cruising for families (more on that later).

And finally, expedition cruises take adventure-seekers to curious and far-flung destinations like the Arctic, Antarctica , the Galapagos , and the Amazon. Expedition boats are much smaller than ocean liners, and the offerings on board are usually more tailored to history and education on expedition cruises .

With all of that in mind, here are the best cruise lines for families and kids.

Hot Tip: Consider our guides to the best websites to book cruises at the cheapest prices , and make sure to use one of our recommended credit cards for booking cruises .

1. Disney Cruise Line

Mickey and Minnie Onboard Disney Cruise

Destinations :

  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Pacific Coast
  • Panama Canal
  • South Pacific

Number of Ships : 5

Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list because it does a really fantastic job of catering to every member of the family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Each ship also has various kids’ clubs for passengers as young as 3 years old (a fee-based nursery is available for kids under 3), as well as pools with waterslides and aqua play areas. Older kids can enjoy a little independence in spaces designed just for them where they can play video games, watch TV, and meet other kids their age.

Dining options aboard Disney cruises include main and casual dining as well as adult-exclusive dining options. There are almost a dozen restaurants, cafes, and snack shops on each ship. Some nod to beloved Disney movie characters, like Lumiere’s on Disney Magic and Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder.

Within each ship, there are 4 categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Oceanview with Verandah, and Concierge. Within most categories are family rooms with bunk beds as well as accessible rooms.

Shore excursions include private tours, culinary adventures, and accessible excursions in more than 25 countries. Guests especially love Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , when cruising select Caribbean itineraries.

2. Royal Caribbean

Icon of the Seas Thrill Island

Destinations:

  • Arabian Gulf and North Africa
  • North America
  • South America

Number of Ships:  27

Royal Caribbean has a whopping 27 cruise ships in its portfolio with another, Utopia of The Seas, scheduled for delivery in 2024.

The cruise line features the world’s largest ships and the tallest water slide at sea . From arcades to roller coasters, there is never any shortage of thrill-seeking activities to find on board any Royal Caribbean cruise.

If you and your family want to make the most of a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’ll want to check out Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class and Amplified ships . These classes of ships feature even more exciting attractions including glow-in-the-dark laser tag and several on-deck pools.

Alternatively, there are places on every Royal Caribbean ship where you can get away from the excitement and relax. In the Solarium, where kids under 16 aren’t allowed, soothing music helps you to decompress while lounging on a daybed or hanging out in a hot tub.

Royal Caribbean also has a private island exclusively for its guests . Coco Cay is located in the Bahamas and features a 13-slide water park as well as the region’s largest wave pools and freshwater pools.

Kids always sail free on Royal Caribbean cruises.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

A woman rides the Skyride on a Carnival Cruise ship.

  • Australia and the Great Barrier Reef
  • Canada and New England
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea

Number of Ships : 24

Carnival Cruise Line has a reputation for being a party cruise line. However, the prices can rarely be beaten, which a lot of family travelers can appreciate.

Similar to Royal Caribbean, Carnival likes to wow its guests with nonstop fun. The onboard attraction Bolt Ultimate Sea Coaster — the first rollercoaster at sea — can be found on 2 of its ships: Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration .

There are 4 standard cabin types on Carnival cruise ships: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. There are also specialty rooms on select ships.

Family Harbor staterooms and suites are located near Family Harbor Lounges and come with a free evening of Night Owls babysitting, among other perks. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites offer Elemis toiletries, spa-branded bathrobes and slippers, and priority spa reservations. And lastly, Havana staterooms and suites are located close to the Havana Bar and Pool. Some suites come with hammock chairs in the outdoor area.

New Orleans native and Food Network star Emeril Lagasse is the newest Chief Culinary Officer for all 24 ships with 3 original restaurants. There are plenty of dining options to choose from across the fleet with cuisines including Italian, Creole, burgers, and teppanyaki.

Onboard activities include Family Feud Live, waterslides, karaoke, and The Punchliner Comedy Club. Most but not all activities are included in the cruise fare. The IMAX theater and a few other attractions incur an additional cost.

Family-friendly excursions and tours include a wildlife safari and beach bonfire on an Alaskan cruise, panoramas and painting in Grand Turk, and a stingray adventure in the Bahamas.

Carnival has a private island that it shares exclusively with Holland America called Half Moon Cay.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL sports gallery ropes course mini golf

Destinations

  • Mediterranean

Number of Ships : 19

Norwegian Cruise Line is best known for being the most innovative cruise line . Notably, it has done away with traditional cruise concepts such as inflexible dining schedules and even dress codes.

Among the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet there are 8 different classes of ships of varying capacities and offerings. The class of ship that tends to be most popular with families is the Breakaway Class . The 2 ships in this class, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway , each have a capacity of about 4,000 passengers. Between the 2 of them, they sail all over the world.

What makes this class of ships on Norweigan Cruise Lines so appealing to families is that it feels like a floating resort. These are the second-largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Activities on either ship include multiple pools, a waterpark, and even a full-size ropes course.

The stateroom categories aboard both the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway include Studio, Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Spa, Club Balcony Suite, and The Haven.  Within those categories are another 30 stateroom types to choose from, including a 2-bedroom family villa . The Haven is an exclusive set of staterooms at the top level of the ship that features a 24-hour butler, concierge service, and sundeck.

In addition to room service, guests aboard Breakaway Class Norwegian Cruise Line ships can enjoy almost 2 dozen restaurants and bars. Not every restaurant is included in your cruise fare. Specialty dining options include seafood restaurant Ocean Blue, Brazilian steakhouse Moderno Churrascaria, and French restaurant Le Bistro.

In addition to excursions that you can book for an additional fee, Norwegian Cruise Line has a private island, Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas.

5. MSC Cruises

Lego Experience on MSC Cruises

  • Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar
  • Northern Europe
  • South Africa

Number of   ships : 19

MSC Cruises is a European-based cruise company with a growing footprint in North America and the Caribbean. It’s known for offering an affordable cruise option without a lot of the fluff of other cruise lines.

Even without a rollercoaster that jets out over the sea, MSC Cruises is still a popular option for family travelers.

For family cruisers in particular, MSC offers family excursions with special pricing for kids, and tours designed to be interactive as well as educational . There are also kids’ clubs aboard their ships in addition to the LEGO Experience on Board, which is a day dedicated to LEGO activities for the whole family.

Select ships feature a fully-immersive virtual reality experience, a movie theater, and an arcade room.

Passengers can expect the typical array of dining options aboard MSC Cruises as well as a special kids’ corner available at the buffet. There’s also a dessert corner and a wellness corner.

There are simply 4 stateroom categories aboard most MSC ships: Interior, Oceanview, Balcony, and MSC Yacht Club. Within the highest category of staterooms, MSC Yacht Club, guests can expect 24-hour butler service, complimentary access to the Thermal Suite in the MSC Aurea Spa, relaxation amenities, and more.

For some families, a megaresort — or in the case here, a mega ship — just isn’t the way you’d like to spend your time on vacation.

There are more upscale and low-key cruise lines that cater to more discerning travel habits while also considering the needs of your youngest family members. In the luxury cruise category, you’ll find expedition and river cruises.

Luxury cruise lines come with a higher financial investment than the cruise lines listed above, but in return, you’ll find more inclusions, often better food, and far fewer onboard guests .

They also admittedly don’t offer as many action-packed attractions on board and some do not cater to especially young children. However, the cruise lines on this list each have unique kids and teens programs that you should be aware of.

Here are the best luxury cruise lines for families.

1. Celebrity Cruises

Camp at Sea on Celebrity Cruises

Number of Ships : 16

Celebrity Cruises features large ships but aims to provide a more high-end experience than you’ll find on cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises. It also does a great job of catering to multi-generational cruisers .

Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

Hot Tip: Cruisers say that Celebrity Equinox is the most family-friendly Celebrity ship thanks to 2 kids’ programs only available on this ship as well as over 100 adjoining cabins.

An array of staterooms exist to choose from on Celebrity Cruise ships, including family verandahs that sleep 5. Celebrity Cruise ships also feature staterooms that cater to solo travelers as well, so when traveling with a group, no one has to feel obligated to share a room.

There are a dozen dining options across each ship such as the French restaurant Normandie or the Mediterranean eatery Cyprus Restaurant. Specialty dining options include Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, Raw on 5 Restaurant serving fresh seafood, and Fine Cut Steakhouse.

2. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection debuts

  • Northern Europe and the Baltic

Number of Ships : 1

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection struggled to set sail when its first yacht was delivered during the height of the pandemic. But Ritz-Carlton hotel loyalists, eager to experience the 5-star hospitality at sea, waited patiently for the first yacht to embark. That finally happened late last year.

Its solo yacht Evrima , which is the Greek word for “discovery,” will be joined by Ilma in 2024.

Guests aboard a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessel can expect the same service they would on land, including the Ritz Kids program. At Ritz Kids, children ages 4 to 12 years old have the opportunity to participate in unique activities based on where they’re traveling . Programming mainly focuses on sustainability, marine life, sailing, and arts and culture.

There’s not an expectation for the yachts to frequently be teeming with children, but the cruise line expects to host more young passengers during summer and holiday school breaks.

The all-suite Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection features ocean views from every room, as well as 6 restaurants and in-suite dining. Guests can enjoy Southeast Asian cuisine from contemporary restaurant Talaat Nam or check out Mediterranean restaurant Mistral.

Ritz-Carlton is a Marriott Bonvoy brand and as such, you can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points when sailing the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . You’ll earn 5 points per $1 spent on the price of your cruise and hotel package and 1 Elite Night Credit per night of your sailing. Redemptions start at 180,000 Bonvoy points to save $1,000, followed by 90,000-point increments to save $500. Redeeming points this way is a tough sell, but the earning isn’t too bad, especially paired with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card ..

3. Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad family Alaska

  • Central America
  • French Polynesia
  • Vietnam and Cambodia

Lindblad Expeditions aims to be the premier expedition cruise line. Its National Geographic Global Explorers program offers exclusive and family-friendly programming for kids and teens.

Expedition cruises are all about exploring remote destinations like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Amazon. Expedition passengers can expect expert-led educational tours and excursions, and smaller ships that cater to less than 100 people .

With the National Geographic Global Explorers program, kids and teens get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing samples, learn how to take field notes, and even learn how to take slow-motion and timelapse videos to document their findings. The National Geographic Global Explorers program can be found on cruises to Antarctica, Alaska, Baja California, and Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions ships carry as few as 28 guests and at most 148. As such, cabins and suites vary across the company’s fleet of ships. It’s a little difficult to find out on your own which suites would accommodate more than 2 people or if you can get connecting cabins, though they do exist, as well as standard double-occupancy suites. As a tip, the best way to book a Lindblad Expedition cruise with your family may be to work with a travel advisor to ensure that you’re making the right investment.

Expedition cruisers seem to be less concerned about the dining options, however, Lindblad does boast that the dining is delicious and sustainably sourced.

4. Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gaugin cruise Tahiti environment kids program

  • Cook Islands
  • Society Islands

Paul Gauguin Cruises specializes in luxury cruises in Tahiti, Fiji, and the South Pacific. With just 1 cruise ship in its fleet, Paul Gauguin takes cruisers to ports that larger cruise ships can’t access.

The Gauguin has a limited capacity of 330 guests . Featuring a spa, 3 dining venues, and an onboard watersports marina, the ship is mostly informal luxury.

The Moana Explorer Program , in partnership with marine education and conservation foundation “Te mana o te moana,” teaches kids ages 7 to 15 about the wonders of the South Pacific.

Only available on summer and holiday sailings, the free program includes activities such as naturalist-led island and beach excursions, crafts, and science. Other fun ways that kids can spend their time aboard The Gauguin are with treasure hunts, stargazing, and designing their own Polynesian tattoos.

All 3 of the dining venues aboard The Gauguin offer a well-thought-out menu with both formal and informal dining options. La Veranda offers alfresco dining inspired by the destinations the ship sails to, Le Grill serves a buffet breakfast, grilled lunch favorites, salads, and tropical fruits, and L’Etoile is the main dining option and serves a fine dining menu with complimentary wine pairings.

5. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Cap'n Knof welcomes families aboard every Hapa Lloyd Cruise.

  • Middle East
  • Pacific and South Seas

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has been called “the most luxurious cruise line you’ve never heard of” by Cruise Critic and is frequently featured on lists of the best cruises for families.

The cruise line claims to pay the same amount of attention to the children and teenagers onboard as the adults. Cap’n Knof, Hapag-Lloyd’s mascot, welcomes each family on board every sailing and participates in games with guests.

Childcare offers vary across the 5 ships. However, sailors can expect a kids’ club for children as young as 4 years old on Europa and Europa 2, the cruise line’s 2 ocean liners. Activities include language classes, unique children’s excursions designed around the interests of the kids onboard, and even spa treatments for kids as young as 8 years old.

Unfortunately, there is no kids program on the cruise lines’ 3 expedition ships: Hanseatic Nature, Hanseatic Inspiration, and Hanseatic Spirit .

Children 11 years old and younger sail free on Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and receive reduced pricing on arrival and departure packages.

6. Adventures by Disney River Cruises

Adventures by Disney Seine Paris

  • Danube River
  • Rhine River
  • Seine River

Number of Ships : 4

In partnership with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney River Cruises offer families an opportunity to experience river cruising that caters to them.

AmaWaterways is a leader in luxury river cruising, with destinations that include the Nile River in Egypt and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, in addition to its European river cruises.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises feature local experts that tell the story of each location. What makes river cruises most attractive to some travelers is that you can travel slowly through a destination and spend more time learning about where you are . Disney’s river cruises are no exception with cultural immersion part of every day of the itinerary.

Hints of Disney can be found throughout the ship just as on Disney Cruise Line ocean ships. Mouse-shaped treats and Disney-themed karaoke are just a few of the features you’ll find on board.

Stateroom configurations range from inside to suites and can accommodate between 2 and 4 guests. Dining on board varies depending on the ship that’s sailing. This information can be found on the highlights page of each sailing’s itinerary.

Hot Tip: Adults who love Disney but prefer to travel without kids can sail on Adventures by Disney adult-exclusive sailings.

If a family cruise vacation is on your list, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. Whether you prefer nonstop energy and lots of things to do or a more laid-back and low-key vibe with luxury amenities and excursions, there is a cruise line for you and your family.

Thrill seekers and budget-conscious travelers will find a great balance on cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises. And luxury travelers interested in expeditions and educational cruising with their families will be delighted to cruise with Lindblad Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises, and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Those interested in river cruising can also bring the kids along on Adventures by Disney River Cruises in Europe.

Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.

Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.

When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:

The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?

The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?

The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?

The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?

Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.

Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.

Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.

Disney Cruise Line: best overall cruise for families

best cruise destinations for families

When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.

There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.

Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.

Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.

The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship.

Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities.

Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke.

The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited.

In-room babysitting isn't available.

Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean: best for kids

Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.

The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.

All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.

The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.

For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.

As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.

Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line: also great

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.

Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.

Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.

For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.

On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line: also great

Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.

Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.

Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary.

Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together.

Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke.

For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.

MSC Cruises: best for European destinations

MSC Cruises has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.

The fleet has 22 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.

Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.

The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.

Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.

For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.

MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.

Celebrity, Holland America and Princess: best only for multi-generational trips

best cruise destinations for families

A shuffleboard court on the Holland America Koningsdam is about as exciting as the outdoor, ship features get. Kids, beware. (Photo by Sally French)

Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess are generally the best for kids unless they have, well, refined tastes. Those ships aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships, and they lack amenities like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters.

Still though, these lines can work for multigenerational family cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And still, they do have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.

The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.

Best Cruise Line for Families (2024) February 16, 2024

Thanks to their excellent travel value, more and more families are turning to cruising when planning their vacations. These 10 cruise lines — voted by readers and chosen as the best in the industry by our panel of cruising experts — cater to young passengers in many ways, including family-friendly at-sea experiences (bumper cars, bowling, and water parks, to name a few), family cabins, and kid-approved dining options.

Quasar Expeditions

No. 10: Quasar Expeditions

The 16-guest yacht Grace and the 32-passenger Evolution offer the kind of personalized Galapagos experience you'd expect from a small luxury cruise, and that includes family-friendly guides who will introduce kids to the unique flora and fauna that helped inspire Charles Darwin's pioneering work on evolution. Activities that will build lifetime memories include swims with sea turtles, sharing beaches with seals, and add-on family safaris to Patagonia.

Norwegian Cruise Line

No. 9: Norwegian Cruise Line

Adults who want to build some "me time" into their family vacation will appreciate Norwegian's special kids programs, while a wide range of on- and off-ship activities guarantee plenty of bonding opportunities, too. Norwegian's "freestyle" cruising concept includes activities like a go-kart racing track on deck, the ThrillPlex activity zones on Breakaway Plus and Breakaway class ships, water parks, climbing walls, and exclusive family accommodations in The Haven.

Royal Caribbean International

No. 8: Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International has a full fleet of ships that are dedicated to family fun. With water parks, swimming pools, tons of entertainment, and family-friendly dining that will suit even the pickiest of eaters, these vessels are made for family vacations. And you can trek around the globe with sailings far beyond the company's tropical home waters to destinations in Alaska, Asia, North America, and the South Pacific.

Disney Cruise Line

No. 7: Disney Cruise Line

A family cruise with Disney is kind of a no-brainer, and a trip with Disney Cruise Line offers much more than meetings with Mickey and Minnie (though character encounters are definitely in the mix). Onboard activities include waterslides and kids clubs, plus a taste of the Magic Kingdom with live Disney shows and fireworks at sea. Films like "Frozen" and "Star Wars" provide inspiration for unique dining experiences, and Caribbean itineraries include a stop at the Castaway Cay private island with its family beach, snorkeling lagoon, water park, and other sunny activities.

Princess Cruises

No. 6: Princess Cruises

Cruising with a big family? The interconnecting Family Suites onboard Princess Cruises ships can accommodate up to eight, and in-room amenities include full-size bathtubs. You can also request fresh pureed baby food in restaurants. Camp Discovery features kids clubs for ages 3-7 and 8-12, while teens get their own beach house to hang out in. Discovery at SEA educational programs like stargazing and Shark Week activities are popular with all ages, and kids and adults alike will enjoy a culinary journey as onboard restaurants highlight food from every destination visited.

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

No. 5: Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

Partnering with National Geographic, Lindblad Expeditions mounts family-centric trips to destinations like the Galapagos and Alaska, taking its small ships to places big cruise lines dare not venture and transferring to small Zodiac inflatables to get parents and kids even closer to exotic wildlife, glaciers, and other natural wonders. Cross-country skiing in Antarctica, visiting sea lion colonies, and spotting bears and bald eagles are among the guided outings that will earn bragging rights back home.

Holland America Line

No. 4: Holland America Line

The premium experience aboard Holland America Line's mid-sized cruise ships includes programs for kids ages 3-17, with activities like pirate treasure hunts for the little ones, theme parties for 'tweens, and teen-friendly activities like gaming tournaments and poker nights. Family-friendly excursions range from whale watching and kayaking to glaciers to zip lining and encounters with penguins and green monkeys.

Margaritaville at Sea

No. 3: Margaritaville at Sea

The "booze in the blender" may be for adults only, but Margaritaville at Sea is first and foremost about lighthearted fun, and that includes guests of all ages. Of course, there's plenty of Caribbean-themed live music in the onboard entertainment mix, but also game shows, karaoke, kids clubs, theater shows, and a Cheeseburger in Paradise Burger Bar. Passengers can also enjoy stingray encounters and dolphin swims on two- and three-night cruises to Grand Bahama Island.

Carnival Cruise Line

No. 2: Carnival Cruise Line

Cabins accommodating up to five guests (plus connecting rooms for even more space), 24-hour room service, kid-friendly dining options like burger joints and Mexican restaurants, and kids clubs catering to toddlers, 'tweens, and teens makes Carnival a great choice for a family cruise trip. And that's not even mentioning the ever-expanding range of onboard entertainment options aboard these "Fun Ships," including water parks, game rooms, ropes courses, and a deck-circling SkyRide.

Adventure Canada

No. 1: Adventure Canada

If your intent is to offer your kids the experience of a lifetime, look no further than Adventure Canada, which cruises to the vast wonders of the north with a mix of sailing yachts and ice-defying exploration vessels. Expert-led excursions introduce young travelers to everything from archaeology and botany to the science of glaciers through interpretive hikes, photography outings, and other unique programs.

If you’re looking for the best cruise destinations for families, you’re in the right place!

A family cruise is a fascinating opportunity to make long-lasting memories and see the world’s treasures with sophistication and comfort.

I’m Marcello from High Seas Cruising and I’ve been cruising since I was 12 years old. Since then, I’ve made many memories sailing all over the world including the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico, New England, and Europe.

So I know what I’m talking about when it comes to cruising! Based on my decades of cruise experiences, let’s take a look at the best cruise destinations for families.

Cruise Destinations for Families: Quick List

  • Amazon River Cruise
  • Australia/New Zealand
  • Canada/New England
  • Galapagos Islands
  • Mediterranean
  • Northern Europe
  • Panama Canal

Top Family Cruise Destinations

Choosing the perfect cruise destination can make all the difference in your family’s vacation. I’ve listed all my top choices aphabetically, since different places wil be best for different families based on your preferences.

When deciding on a cruise, pay close attention to the itinerary, shore excursions, and ports of call. It’s all about finding what suits your family’s interests, guaranteeing a holiday as memorable as the destinations themselves.

Most people think an Alaskan cruise is for mature passengers. But that can’t be further from the truth. I sailed to Alaska at the age of 14. It was, and still is my favorite cruise destination.

The popularity of Alaska in family cruises is increasing.

In the past, Alaska was the destination where cruise lines sent their older, smaller vessels. Today, cruise lines send some of their latest and greatest ships, offering something for everyone to love.

The best way to explore Alaska is onboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class vessels. The cruise ship provides all the luxuries and treats, including a 300-foot observation pod with a stunning view of America’s Last Frontier.

Here are some of my favorite things to do on an Alaska cruise :

Things to Do in Skagway

  • Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway : Experience the historic railroad used to connect Skagway with the gold sands. The White Pass Railroad is my favorite Alaskan shore excursion. Experience breathtaking mountain views, waterfalls, and stories from the gold rush. Kids will love the famous wooden bridge and tunnels through the mountains.
  • Dog Sled Racing: Learn about Alaska’s dog sledding history and the training for Alaska’s famous Iditarod dog sled race. When I visited, the sled team introduced us to their future athletes, their newborn puppies. What kid doesn’t want to spend the day playing with puppies?

Things To Do in Juneau

  • Mount Roberts Tramway : Ride the Mount Roberts Tramway for breathtaking views of Juneau and its surroundings. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the cruise port and Alaska’s state capital. At the top, you’ll find easy hiking trails suitable for kids, an eagle rehabilitation center, and the chance to learn about the local Tlingit culture.
  • Go on a Whale-Watching Tour : Although you can often glimpse whales from the top of the cruise ship, a whale-watching tour is the best way to get up close to humpback and orca whales.
  • Gold Panning at Gold Creek : Step back into the Gold Rush era and pan for gold in Gold Creek. This hands-on activity is fun and educational, teaching kids about Alaska’s gold rush history and the concept of perseverance. I remember dragging my little brother back to the ship because he thought he was about to strike it rich.

2. Amazon River Cruise

An Amazon River cruise is the best way to Earth’s largest rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is full of biodiversity and rich cultures, which is excellent for families who enjoy nature, wildlife, and educational experiences.

Amazon River Cruises are educational and thrilling, helping young ones and adults learn the rainforest’s secrets through exploration.

Your kids will love looking for wildlife from the boat’s top deck. There are various animals for kids to discover.

Keep an eye out for pink river dolphins, manatees, and jaguars, along with many snake species. There are more than 500 bird species.

  • Wildlife Watching : The Amazon is famous for its incredible biodiversity. You can see plenty of animals from the cruise ship, including pink dolphins, sloths, toucans, and perhaps even the elusive jaguar during river excursions or jungle hikes.
  • Visit an Indigenous Community : This cultural experience allows you to learn about the locals’ relationship with the environment, traditions, and daily life in the Amazon.
  • Canopy Walks : Some cruises offer visits to research stations where you can walk among the treetops on suspension bridges.

3. Antarctica

An Antarctic cruise is an incredible journey into one of the world’s most isolated and untouched regions. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime vacation for families passionate about wildlife, breathtaking sights, and adventure in a land of ice and snow.

This freezing destination provides an adventure for families. Children can learn about glaciology, marine biology, and environmental science while taking in the sights of the South Pole.

Antarctica cruises provide unique wildlife experiences with penguins, seals, and whales and exciting activities like zodiac boat rides, kayaking, and landings on the continent. It’s an incomparable adventure and educational opportunity.

Penguin watching is one of the most enjoyable activities during an Antarctica cruise. Take your binoculars to observe thousands of penguins in their natural environment.

Zodiac shore excursions are tremendous and adventurous as they allow one to have a closer look at icebergs, glaciers, and wildlife.

Plus, Zodiac cruises enable you to step on the continent of Antarctica, which is an opportunity that few families have – to walk on Antarctica, visit research stations, and even have an overnight camp.

It’s truly a vacation no kid would forget.

4. Australia/New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand cruise is a perfect vacation for families who want to have a mix of everything, from visiting the lively cities and beautiful natural sceneries to having an opportunity to learn about the cultural heritage of the Aborigines.

Australian cruises suit families who want adventure, relaxation, and learning opportunities.

Here are some of the best things to do on an Australia/New Zealand cruise:

  • Great Barrier Reef (Australia) : A visit to the world’s largest coral reef system is a must-see. Snorkeling or diving tours allow families to marvel at the world’s most extensive reef system, teeming with vibrant fish.
  • Sydney Opera House and Harbour (Australia) : The Sydney Opera House is an architectural marvel. No visit to Australia is complete without a visit to the distinctive building overlooking the beautiful Sydney Harbor.

It’s an enriching experience that combines education with entertainment.
  • Ziplining (New Zealand) : Zipline through New Zealand’s lush rainforest. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you zip through the treetops.

A trip to the Bahamas on a cruise is the definition of a family-friendly holiday with its sparkling beaches, clear waters, and relaxed island atmosphere. Bahamas cruises are ideal for those who want to relax or be adventurous.

The sun-drenched days full of water sports, shopping, and marine life make this tropical spot perfect for families.

Here are some family-friendly things to do in the Bahamas:

  • Pirate Museum in Nassau : Dive into the history of pirates in the Bahamas with interactive exhibits and authentic pirate artifacts. It’s both educational and entertaining for kids and adults alike.
  • Snorkeling : Experience the vibrant marine life of the Bahamas through snorkeling tours. You may even see some wild dolphins!
  • Spend the Day at the Beach : A beach day in the Bahamas offers families the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure amidst stunning natural beauty. The crystal-clear waters and soft white sands provide a serene backdrop for quality family time. Plus, beach days are budget-friendly and fun for kids .

Treasure Cay Beach on Abaco Island in the Bahamas

A family cruise to Bermuda combines natural beauty, British colonial history, and various outdoor and cultural activities. When considering Bermuda cruises, we consider pink-sand beaches, turquoise sea, and smiley natives.

So get ready for Bermuda cruises in which you will be at sea more and have fewer ports of call. More sea days are a huge advantage for families, as you don’t have to disembark as often.

Here are the best things to do in Bermuda:

  • Horseshoe Bay Beach : One of Bermuda’s most famous beaches, Horseshoe Bay, is a must-visit for families. Its pink sands, clear waters, and rock formations provide a picturesque setting for swimming, snorkeling, and sandcastle building. There’s also a lifeguard on duty during the summer months, ensuring a safe environment for kids.
  • Crystal and Fantasy Caves : Exploring these underground caves is an adventure for the whole family. The dramatic formations of stalactites and stalagmites and a clear, deep underground pool are visually stunning and educational as guides explain the geological history of the caves.
  • Royal Naval Dockyard : This historic area is a hub of activity, with shops, museums, and dining. The National Museum of Bermuda, located within the dockyard, offers an educational and fun experience for kids. The museum provides insights into the island’s maritime history.

Bermuda is a good family cruise destination, providing a safe, welcoming, and educational atmosphere.

With its beautiful beaches, cultural diversity, and exciting activities, Bermuda offers an unforgettable holiday that appeals to children, older kids, and adults regarding their interests and curiosities.

7. Canada/New England

A cruise to Canada and New England is a fantastic option for families looking to experience the natural beauty, rich history, and cultural diversity of the northeastern coast of North America .

This region is particularly famous for its spectacular fall foliage, historic cities, and maritime heritage, making it an excellent destination for educational and outdoor activities for kids and adults.

Canada and New England cruises are excellent choices for families who want to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature, fascinating history, and cultural diversity of the northeastern coast of North America.

This area isn’t a popular cruise destination. But don’t let that fool you.

Canada/New England cruises offer breathtaking autumn leaves, ancient towns, and naval traditions, making it a perfect place to learn and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Visit Acadia National Park in Maine : Offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, hiking trails, and the chance to see local wildlife, Acadia is an excellent place for families to explore the great outdoors.
  • Enjoy the Fall Foliage : If you’re cruising in the autumn, the region offers some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the world. Places like the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia or the Green Mountains in Vermont offer an incredible landscape with vibrant colors.
  • Discover Québec City : This UNESCO World Heritage site is North America’s only walled city north of Mexico. Kids will enjoy the old-world atmosphere, street performers, and chocolate shops. Its charming streets, European architecture, and landmarks like the Château Frontenac and the Plains of Abraham offer a unique cultural experience.
  • Whale Watching in the Bay of Fundy : Between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the Bay of Fundy is known for having the highest tides in the world and is an excellent spot for whale watching. Families can take guided boat tours to see humpback, minke, and sometimes even the rare North Atlantic right whales.

Autumn is the best time to visit New England for the fall colors. But summer sailings are also full of family fun. Every port has different experiences, making sure that all family members have memborable moments, especially the kids.

8. Caribbean

A Caribbean cruise is the most popular family cruise destination. The Caribbean combines sun, sea, and sand with a tapestry of cultures and histories across numerous islands.

The Caribbean is a popular destination for families because of its incredible beaches, calm seas, clear blue waters, coral reefs, and warm sun. These factors make it the best family vacation spot for relaxation and adventure.

  • Snorkeling and Diving : The Caribbean Sea is known for its clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. Places like the US Virgin Islands , Belize’s Barrier Reef, and Bonaire are fantastic for families to explore underwater wonders, offering snorkeling and diving experiences suitable for beginners and younger participants.

These experiences provide a deeper understanding of the islands’ histories and traditions.

Caribbean Cruise Tips

When planning your family vacation on a Caribbean cruise, ensure the itinerary includes kid-friendly activities and ports of call that cater to younger travelers.

Look for cruise ships with water parks, spacious family cabins, and family-oriented activity programs.

You’ll find two types of Caribbean cruises, eastern and western sailings. I recommend sticking with an Eastern Caribbean itinerary as the ports of call offer more things to do for families, kids, and teens.

Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Disney Cruise Line are family-friendly cruise lines popular for their extensive amenities and activities tailored for children, making them a top choice for a family Caribbean adventure.

Consider itineraries that visit the cruise lines’ private islands, which offer a more exclusive beach day. MSC Cruises and Celebrity Cruises are also great for more upscale experiences.

9. Galapagos Islands

A cruise to the Galápagos Islands is a once-in-a-lifetime journey for families, particularly those focusing on the environment, wildlife, and conservation.

The Galapagos Islands are UNESCO World Heritage Site as the pristine islands are home to unique species of animals and plants.

This archipelago is 600 miles off the west coast of Ecuador. The Galapagos is a unique living museum of evolutionary changes, with various marine and terrestrial life not found anywhere else on Earth.

The wildlife in the Galapagos is legendary, and the island’s animals influenced Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory.

The tropical heaven is the ultimate location for families seeking to be one with nature while absorbing information about peculiar biospheres and the value of sustaining habitats.

When you visit the Galapagos, these are some great activities:

  • Visiting Giant Tortoises at Darwin Research Station : The giant tortoises highlight any Galápagos trip. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about these ancient creatures and the conservation efforts to protect them, making it a memorable and educational experience for children.
  • Bird Watching : The Galápagos Islands are a haven for bird enthusiasts, with species such as the albatross, frigatebirds, and the iconic blue-footed boobies. Bird-watching excursions allow families to observe these birds in their natural habitats, providing a fun and educational experience for all ages.

The Galápagos cruise is perfect for families that appreciate animal encounters, educational experiences, and exploring one of the world’s most remote locations.

For families, there is no better family vacation than a Hawaii cruise. The Hawaiian Islands offer beautiful rainforests, live volcanoes, stunning beaches, and vibrant coral reefs, suiting a family that wants to relax and enjoy nature.

In the case of Hawaiian cruises, more often than not, they are part of repositioning cruises as ships maneuver between the Alaskan and Australian cruise seasons.

Note : Only Pride of America by Norwegian Cruise Line provides year-round sailings to Hawaii.

  • Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Exploring this park offers a unique opportunity to learn about volcanic processes and the formation of the Hawaiian Islands. Families can hike through volcanic craters, walk through lava tubes, and, depending on current volcanic activity, possibly see lava flows. What kid doesn’t want to visit an active volcano?
  • Snorkeling in Maui : The clear, warm waters of Maui are perfect for snorkeling, especially in places like Molokini Crater, a partially submerged volcanic crater teeming with marine life. It’s an accessible activity for kids and a fantastic way to introduce them to underwater ecosystems.
  • Attend a Luau : Experiencing a traditional Hawaiian luau is a must-do for families. It’s an evening filled with cultural performances, including hula dancing, fire twirling, and a feast of Hawaiian dishes like kalua pork, poi, and haupia.

A cruise to Japan offers families an immersive journey into a country where ancient traditions seamlessly blend with cutting-edge modernity. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the ancient temples of Kyoto, Japan is a study in contrasts.

That makes it an ideal place to visit for people traveling with other members of the family who would like to enjoy a rich cultural background, beautiful foods, and breathtaking natural scenes.

Japan cruises are full of cultural, historical, and technological experiences.

Be it in the way of embracing the ancient traditions of Japan, the magnificence of the Japanese landscapes, or the exuberance of Japanese life in contemporary cities, a family visit to Japan guarantees the adventure of a lifetime.

  • Explore Kyoto’s Temples and Shrines : Kyoto, the ancient capital, has over a thousand temples and shrines, including the famous Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Shrine, with thousands of torii gates. 12. Mediterranean

My Italian grandparents have always said I needed to visit Europe. After sailing on a Mediterranean cruise, I genuinely believe there is no better way to travel to Europe than a cruise.

Visiting several countries in a week provides an appreciation for the European continent’s diverse cultures and lengthy history.

Mediterranean cruising makes for an enriching family experience, marrying the hospitality of its people with the richness of its historical and cultural gems.

Famed for its breathtaking landscapes, ancient ruins, vibrant cities, and excellent food, the Mediterranean is ideal for families.

Here are my favorite things to do on a Mediterranean cruise:

  • Visit the Colosseum and Vatican City in Rome : Exploring these iconic sites offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, making it a fascinating educational experience for children and adults alike.
  • Explore the Acropolis in Athens : This ancient citadel, home to the Parthenon and other historic structures, provides insight into ancient Greek civilization and offers panoramic views of the city below.
  • Enjoy the Beaches of the Greek Islands : Islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete are not only picturesque but also offer beautiful beaches and opportunities for snorkeling, sailing, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
  • Discover the Palaces of Istanbul : The rich history of Istanbul, straddling two continents, is evident in its magnificent palaces, such as Topkapi and Dolmabahçe, and the iconic Hagia Sophia, providing families with a unique insight into the Ottoman Empire.

For a trip full of life, a cruise to Mexico is a beautiful voyage that attracts families to discover its cultural wealth, dazzling beaches, and ancient Mayan history.

Beginning with the ancient Mayan cities on the Yucatan Peninsula and ending with the beautiful beaches of Cozumel and the delightful shores of the Mexican Riviera , Mexico has much to offer for every preference and age.

Mexican cruises are excellent for families hoping for rest, excitement, and cultural activities.

  • Explore the Mayan Ruins : Visiting ancient sites like Chichen Itza , Tulum, or Coba offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Mayan civilization. These sites provide a historical context and offer breathtaking views and a chance to explore Mexico’s natural landscapes.
  • Snorkel in Cozumel : Cozumel is among the world’s best snorkeling and diving destinations. The clear waters are home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, making it an exciting adventure for families .
  • Experience Authentic Mexican Cuisine : Mexican food is known for its flavors and diversity. Participating in a cooking class or food tour allows families to learn about local ingredients, traditional dishes, and the cultural significance of food in Mexican society. Trust me, Mexican cuisine tastes one hundred times better in Mexico.
  • Swim in a Cenote : The Yucatán Peninsula is famous for its cenotes—natural swimming holes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, exposing the groundwater underneath. Swimming in a cenote is a refreshing and unique experience for families to cool off from the sun and explore beautiful caves.
  • Try a Chocolate Tasting : One of my most memorable experiences was a chocolate-tasting excursion where we learned about the origins of chocolate and farming cacao trees. The chocolate was delicious, but the authentic Mayan chocolate was the most memorable. The bitter cocoa is nothing like the chocolate I’m used to. However, it shows the creativity of the Mayan people in turning bitter cocoa into chocolate.

14. Northern Europe

Cruising through Norway’s fjords, such as Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, provides breathtaking sights with waterfalls, rocks, and untouched beauty for family cruising.

Many shore excursions offer kayaking, hiking, or even glacier walks, making it perfect for outdoorsy families.

Most importantly, northern cruises provide the optimal possibility of seeing the Northern Lights – a unique experience for the whole family.

An elegant balance between educational experiences and outdoor exploration characterizes a Northern European cruise.

With activities and sights to attract all ages, it makes the perfect family trip , which is adventurous, creating memories that are hard to forget.

  • Visit the Vasa Museum in Stockholm : This museum is home to the almost fully intact 17th-century Vasa ship that sank on its maiden voyage. It offers a fascinating glimpse into maritime history and is engaging for kids with its interactive exhibits and storytelling. Consider the small Vasa ship compared to the cruise ship on which you’re currently vacationing.
  • Take a Bike Tour in Copenhagen : Copenhagen is known for being incredibly bike-friendly. A family bike tour is a fun and active way to explore the city’s sights, including the Little Mermaid statue, Nyhavn Harbor, and the Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the world.
  • See the Northern Lights : For cruises that venture further north, especially during winter, catching a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis is a magical experience. Tromsø in Norway is a popular spot for Northern Lights tours, offering families a once-in-a-lifetime natural spectacle.
  • Visit a Medieval Castle : Northern Europe has several historic castles and fortresses. Visiting sites like the Trakai Castle in Lithuania or Edinburgh Castle in Scotland can spark children’s imaginations with tales of knights, kings, and queens.

15. Panama Canal

A cruise through the Panama Canal is not just a trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean; it is a trip through a wonder of modern engineering with a rich blend of art, cultures, and natural beauty.

To families, it is one of the most exotic educational journeys emphasizing the value of human genius and nature preservation, combined with exploring the secrets of tropical rainforests, bustling cities, and indigenous peoples.

Panama Canal cruises show not just the human abilities of engineering but also provide a great idea of the diversity and connections in our world.

  • Transit the Panama Canal : The highlight of the cruise is the passage through the canal itself, including the impressive lock systems. Watching the ship navigate the locks, with mere inches to spare on either side, is an unforgettable experience.
  • Visit the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center : Located near Panama City, the center offers panoramic views of the canal, interactive exhibits, and a museum dedicated to the canal’s history, construction, and operation. It’s an excellent way for kids to grasp the scale and significance of the canal visually.
  • Explore Rainforests : Excursions to places like the Soberanía National Park or the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve offer opportunities to hike, bird-watch, and encounter wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds in their natural habitat.

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

In many ways, cruises are the ultimate family vacation . Thanks to family-friendly programming, kids’ clubs, set dining options, and curated shore excursions, cruises eliminate the stress of planning so you can focus on enjoying time with your crew in beautiful destinations around the globe. Perfect for multi-generational travel , most cruises offer something for everyone — from toddlers to seniors — so you can all travel at your own pace while still enjoying a family vacation together.

Whether you want to explore quaint European towns or go island hopping in the Caribbean, there’s a perfect cruise for you and your family. This year, our readers voted on the best cruise lines for families, and the results showcase the variety of travel experiences that cruises offer today.

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line, two of the world’s largest cruise lines, earned spots on this year’s list, but many of the other cruise lines loved by our readers offer immersive, small ship experiences in otherwise hard-to-visit destinations. Delfin Amazon Cruises, the world’s first Relais & Châteaux Cruise, takes guests through the upper Peruvian Amazon, while Quasar Expeditions offers special family-oriented cruises through the Galapagos Islands . U by Uniworld, Uniworld’s trendy sister brand known for its fresh take on European river cruising, also made the cut for this year’s list.

This year, Disney Cruise Line was voted the No. 1 best cruise line for families, according to our readers. Disney cruises are about as family-friendly as it gets, with Broadway-style shows, character experiences, and pirate-themed deck parties (and a healthy dose of Disney magic, of course). While the kids are hanging out at the youth clubs, parents can relax at the spa or enjoy a quiet, adults-only dinner for two. Essential Tips for Cruising with Kids in Europe

Best Time to Go on a European Cruise with Kids

When planning your family cruise in Europe, aim for the shoulder seasons such as late spring or early fall. During these times, the weather is milder, and there are fewer crowds, making it more enjoyable for you and your little explorers. Additionally, consider school holidays to align with your kids’ break, ensuring a stress-free vacation without missing out on valuable school days.

Packing Essentials for a Family Cruise

Pack smart for your European cruise with kids by including key essentials. Remember to bring sufficient sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect your family from the sun while exploring ports of call. Don’t forget to pack comfortable walking shoes for both adults and children to ensure everyone stays comfortable during shore excursions. A compact first aid kit with essential medications and remedies for motion sickness can also come in handy.

Managing Jet Lag and Sea Sickness in Children

To minimize the impact of jet lag on your kids during a European cruise, adjust their sleep schedule gradually before departure. Encourage them to stay hydrated and active onboard to help regulate their internal clocks. In case of sea sickness, consider booking cabins in the middle of the ship where motion is typically felt less. Pack over-the-counter remedies like ginger candies or wristbands designed to alleviate nausea to ease any discomfort your children may experience while at sea.

Onshore Excursions That Kids Will Love

Educational and Interactive Tour Options

Explore fascinating historical sites with your kids by choosing engaging tours that offer interactive experiences. Visits to ancient ruins like the Roman Colosseum in Italy or the Acropolis in Greece can bring history to life. Opt for guided tours specifically designed for children that include storytelling and hands-on activities to keep them entertained while learning.

For a more hands-on experience, consider interactive workshops where kids can participate in traditional crafts or cooking classes. These educational tours not only entertain but also provide valuable cultural insights and immersive experiences for your little ones.

Beach Days and Water Activities

Enjoy a day of fun in the sun with your family by planning beach excursions during your European cruise. Let your kids splash around in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean or build sandcastles on the sandy shores of the Adriatic coast.

Participate in water sports activities such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking, suitable for children of all ages. These adventures allow your kids to explore the marine life and coastal beauty of various destinations while staying active and entertained.

Make sure to pack beach essentials such as sunscreen, hats, and beach toys to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable beach day for the whole family.

Getting the Best Deal on Your Family Cruise

When planning your family cruise, getting the best deal is essential to make the most of your vacation budget. Here are some tips to help you save money and enjoy a fantastic trip with your kids.

Booking in Advance vs. Last-Minute Deals

Deciding between booking your family cruise in advance or opting for last-minute deals can impact your overall cost and available options. Booking early often provides you with more cabin choices and special promotions, especially for families traveling with kids. On the other hand, last-minute deals may offer discounted rates but come with limited availability and fewer cabin selections, which can be challenging for larger families needing multiple rooms.

To ensure you get the best deal, consider booking your European family cruise in advance to secure the accommodations and amenities that suit your family’s needs best. Keep an eye out for early booking discounts and perks that cruise lines offer to passengers who plan ahead.

Using Points and Miles for Savings

If you’re a frequent traveler or have accumulated points and miles through loyalty programs, consider utilizing them to save on your family cruise expenses. Many cruise lines, airlines, and credit card companies offer reward programs that allow you to redeem points or miles for discounted or even free cruises.

Before booking your European cruise, check if you can use your accumulated points and miles to offset some of the costs. This can significantly reduce the overall price of your family vacation, making it a more budget-friendly option for you and your loved ones. Be sure to explore different redemption options and choose the one that maximizes your savings while enjoying a memorable cruise experience.

You’ve now discovered a world of possibilities for your next European cruise with the kids. From the enchanting Mediterranean to the captivating Baltic Sea and Scandinavia, there’s a perfect adventure waiting for your family. Remember, planning ahead can unlock fantastic deals and promotions, making your dream vacation even more affordable. Loyalty programs can be your secret weapon to saving on expenses, ensuring a budget-friendly getaway without compromising on the fun. So, pack your bags, set sail, and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones aboard a family-friendly European cruise. Bon voyage!

The 6 best cruise lines for young adults

Megan duBois

Travelers between the ages of 18 and 25 often get overlooked on cruises. They are too old for the teen clubs, even if they are still in high school at 18, but may be too young to drink at the onboard bars. Many cruise lines forget that 20-somethings still want to meet their onboard peers in group settings arranged by the cruise line — especially if they're traveling with older family members with different vacation interests.

The best cruise lines for young adults often have meetups that allow them to make friends quickly on the first night; have a cool, laid-back vibe in adults-only areas that they can finally access after graduating from the kids clubs; and have some sense of adventure built into the itinerary.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Young adult cruisers can find a party around every corner on Carnival Cruise Line or adventures off the ship with Royal Caribbean International. Even solo cruisers will find cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line that are designed just for them, with communal spaces ideal for making friends.

Here, we list the six best cruise lines for young adults ages 18 to 25. Plus, we outline a few key things you should know when picking a cruise line, especially if you are younger than 21 (or traveling with someone who is).

3 things young adult cruisers need to know

Booking restrictions.

Some cruise lines do have restrictions for travelers looking to book a sailing if they are younger than 21. For instance, Royal Caribbean sets the minimum age to sail unaccompanied by an adult on cruises from North America at 21. (You only need to be 18 years old to sail from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.)

Before booking with any cruise line, you'll want to check the minimum age requirement of the cruise line to be sure you or someone in your group meets the requirements.

Drinking age on cruises

On most sailings from the U.S., guests must be at least 21 years old to drink alcohol on the ship. One exception to this rule is Margaritaville at Sea , which allows guests who are 18 to drink once the ship is in international waters or on Grand Bahama Island.

If you're sailing from a country that allows legal drinking at 18, as many European countries do, check the drinking policy for those who are younger than 21 for that particular sailing or cruise line before booking. For example, Disney Cruise Line allows 18- to 20-year-olds to consume alcohol on closed-loop sailings departing from any European country. Parents or guardians just need to sign a consent form.

Be warned, though, that consuming or even buying alcohol for those younger than 21 is a serious offense that can lead to forced debarkation on sailings that say the age for drinking is 21 and older.

Cruise line alcohol policies

Cruise lines generally frown on bringing your own alcohol on board, limiting bottles and charging corkage fees. Check your specific cruise line's policies because they are all different.

For example, Disney Cruise Line allows those who are at least 21 to bring two bottles of wine or six beers onto the ship with them in a carry-on bag on embarkation day and again at each port of call. Carnival Cruise Line allows cruisers 21 and older to bring one bottle of unopened wine per person on board in their carry-on luggage on embarkation day only.

If you decide to try to sneak on more alcohol than allowed , security can confiscate and discard it. Most cruise lines will open bottles of water, mouthwash and other clear liquids to confirm it's not contraband alcohol.

Best cruise line for a party: Carnival Cruise Line

best cruise destinations for families

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its lively atmosphere and party vibes. Sailings on Carnival are among the most affordable, which can benefit young adults looking for a fun vacation on a budget.

Along with fun fast-casual dining spots from celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O'Neal, Carnival's so-called "Fun Ships" have an abundance of shows, trivia challenges and outdoor activities that appeal to younger cruisers. On Carnival ships, those 18 and older can gamble in the onboard casino but cannot order drinks at the many themed bars unless they're at least 21 years old.

Carnival doesn't typically offer planned events for cruisers ages 18 to 25. Travelers looking to meet similarly aged travelers can connect with shipmates on Facebook groups dedicated to their sailing and arrange an unofficial meetup with other young adults on board. Active shore excursions, the fitness center and the hot tub on the adults-only sun deck are great places to look for peers during a cruise.

Best cruise line for young adult meetups: Disney Cruise Line

best cruise destinations for families

Even though Disney Cruise Line is known as the family cruise line, young adults may be on board because they have younger siblings or their family enjoys visiting Disney parks. Cruisers who have aged out of Vibe, the teen club for 14- to 17-year-olds, will find their own "secret" onboard club known as the 1820 Society.

Cruisers ages 18 to 20 who want to participate in the planned activities can see all the available happenings on the Disney Cruise Line app once they're on the ship. Young adults should attend the first meetup, which is where introductions and icebreaker games happen. Throughout the cruise and even on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, meetups and activities are scheduled for the age group.

Another plus for young adults is that Disney only requires guests to be 18 years old to sail unaccompanied. That means you and your friends don't need a parent chaperone for a weekend cruise filled with late-night dance parties in the District and brunch at the adults-only Palo restaurant .

Best cruise line for young foodies: Celebrity Cruises

best cruise destinations for families

Young adult cruisers who get excited about international cuisine and craft cocktails will enjoy Celebrity Cruises , especially its newest Edge-class ships. The line is a good choice for multigenerational trips, especially as its fares might be beyond a 20-something's budget.

Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond and the upcoming Ascent are filled with hip venues, such as Craft Social with its dozens of boutique beers and Eden with its innovative, nature-themed cocktails. If you want to feel the ocean breeze on your face while sipping a martini, head to the Rooftop Garden, where greenery, plush loungers and ocean views will keep you coming back throughout your cruise.

Dining at the many onboard restaurants is also a treat, with venues specializing in sushi, backyard barbecue, French bistro classics and handmade Italian pasta. If your budget doesn't allow for specialty dining, you won't get menu fatigue with four main dining rooms included in the fare. Each restaurant is themed around a different country's cuisine, including Greek, French, Italian and new American.

Best cruise line for quick sailings: Royal Caribbean

best cruise destinations for families

Young adults may struggle to take time off from work or school to do a weeklong cruise. With Royal Caribbean , travelers in their late teens and 20s can take part in two- to five-night sailings from the U.S. or Europe that have affordable rates. Even better, some of the line's largest and attraction-laden ships sail these shorter itineraries, so you won't have a chance to be bored.

Cruises from Florida often go to Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , which adds even more value to the cruise by adding a hassle-free beach day into the destination mix. On the island, lunch is free and you can use your shipboard beverage package to cover your drinks. Plus, the inviting pool and many beaches are great places to hang out and enjoy the water. You must pay extra to ride CocoCay's many waterslides, zip line or tethered hot air balloon.

On board the ships, young adults can meet others at the sports court for a pickup game of basketball or pickleball. The nightclubs and lounges are fun spots to dance and sing with new friends. The minimum age to sail without an older adult in the cabin for cruises departing from North America is 21.

Best cruise line for an adults-only atmosphere: Virgin Voyages

best cruise destinations for families

Young adults looking for a kid-free vacation should check out Virgin Voyages , an adults-only cruise line where the minimum age to book is 18. Gratuities, Wi-Fi and sassy group workouts are included in the fare. Each of the three (soon to be four) ships have many restaurants, such as Pink Agave for Mexican and Gunbae for Korean barbecue, all of which are fee-free.

At sea, guests ages 18 and older can enjoy an alcoholic beverage, but while docked in any U.S. port, the minimum drinking age on board is 21.

One of the most exciting moments of every Virgin Voyages sailing is Scarlet Night, when the entire ship is decked out in red thanks to added red lights and red crew outfits. Guests are encouraged to don their crimson best and attend a late-night dance party on the pool deck.

Adventurous passengers can get matching ink with their besties at the onboard tattoo shop or attend a risque show at night. This is definitely a cruise to take with your partner or peers, not your parents.

Best cruise line for young adults traveling solo: Norwegian Cruise Line

best cruise destinations for families

Solo travelers are often overlooked and, frankly, outpriced on many cruises. With single supplement charges, solo cruisers pay the same total price for a room as two people sharing a cabin.

Norwegian Cruise Line changed the game with its Studio cabins. These 100-square-foot inside rooms are designed for one, so travelers won't be paying extra. Studio guests also get access to the Studio Lounge, a communal gathering space with big-screen TVs, drinks and snacks. Not all NCL ships offer solo cabins ; studios are available on multiple ships, including Norwegian Escape, Epic, Encore, the new Norwegian Prima and the upcoming Norwegian Viva.

On board, cruisers will find plenty of fast-casual and table-service dining options, including one of our favorite food halls at sea, Indulge Food Hall on Norwegian Prima and Viva. Active young adults will enjoy the go-kart tracks , virtual reality game rooms, waterslides and lively dance clubs found on many of Norwegian's newest ships. If you prefer to relax with a book and enjoy the ocean breeze, you can do that, too.

Bottom line

Whether on a family trip with younger siblings or older parents, a party cruise with friends or a relaxing escape with your significant other, young adults can find ships that speak their language. We recommend these six lines for 18- to 25-year-olds, but even on other ships, a good attitude and an adventurous spirit will go a long way toward making a trip you didn't choose extra fun. Young adults can find plenty that appeals to them on most cruises — with or without mom and dad.
