ls ne feront pourtant que passer, ces cyclistes de la Grande Boucle. Et c’est à peine si l’on aura le temps de les distinguer depuis le bord de la route. Mais même fugace, un tel instant se prépare comme la plus belle des rencontres.

Lundi 3 juillet, le Tour de France, sa caravane et son peloton traverseront Hendaye, à l’occasion de la troisième étape de cette édition 2023 , entre Amorebieta-Etxano et Bayonne. Au plus tôt à partir de 16 h 10, si la moyenne est de 46 km/h, où vers 16 h 27 si les coureurs lambinent à 42 km/h...

Lundi 3 juillet, le Tour de France, sa caravane et son peloton traverseront Hendaye, à l’occasion de la troisième étape de cette édition 2023 , entre Amorebieta-Etxano et Bayonne. Au plus tôt à partir de 16 h 10, si la moyenne est de 46 km/h, où vers 16 h 27 si les coureurs lambinent à 42 km/h (la caravane, elle, se présentera précisément à 14 h 27).

Hendaye n’est donc pas ville étape, contrairement à 1996, le Tour arrivant depuis Pampelune, passant par Saint-Jean-de-Luz et empruntant la route de la Corniche avant que le Néerlandais Bart Voskamp ne se détache pour l’emporter. Quand bien même, la simple perspective de voir le grand barnum pour quelques minutes seulement, entrer en ville par le pont International avant d’en sortir par la route de la Glacière induit une mobilisation générale, notamment au sein des services municipaux.

300 bottes de paille

À la mairie et au centre technique, cela fait plusieurs semaines que l’on anticipe : « Tout le monde s’active pour que le cahier des charges très précis, livré par la société du Tour, soit respecté, confirme Robert Lambert. Le jour J, soixante personnes seront sur le pont, cinquante agents et dix bénévoles de l’Amicale Laïque. » Le chef du centre technique municipal s’apprête à réceptionner dans quelques jours les 300 bottes de pailles mises à disposition par le Conseil départemental des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, qui serviront à baliser le parcours et indiquer aux coureurs certains rétrécissements de voie.

Département qui, comme la Ville, est intervenu sur certaines reprises de voirie. Des travaux qui se poursuivent encore, notamment boulevard du Général-de-Gaulle. Les services municipaux ont quant à eux répondu aux attentes de la société du Tour en ôtant quelques éléments de mobilier urbain, potelets, ainsi qu’un coussin berlinois (ralentisseur)… qui seront en grande majorité réinstallés.

« Durant quelques heures, la vie sera perturbée », admet-on dans les bureaux de la mairie, le doigt posé sur une carte sur laquelle ont été repérés l’itinéraire de la course, les axes affectés et les secteurs totalement bloqués. On pourrait même dire quelques jours puisque tout le long du parcours, le stationnement sera interdit dès le samedi 1 er  juillet à partir de 8 heures, jusqu’au lundi 3 juillet, 18 heures. Exception faite du boulevard de la Mer, où il ne sera plus possible de se garer du dimanche 2 juillet à 20 heures, jusqu’au lendemain à 18 heures.

Lundi 3 juillet, la circulation de l’ensemble du réseau de bus sera stoppée à midi, hormis la ligne 37, entre Biriatou et Hendaye. Les transports scolaires, eux, ne fonctionneront pas de la journée, ce qui semble remettre en cause l’ouverture des établissements scolaires de la ville : « Nous sommes en attente de la réponse du rectorat », patiente-t-on encore à la mairie.

42 voies concernées

Toujours au rayon circulation, on comptera 42 voies de circulation débouchant sur le parcours du Tour de France. Chacune de ces intersections sera bloquée.

À partir de cette neutralisation, la pointe de Sokoburu sera coupée du reste de la ville. Une perspective qui, là encore, ne va pas sans quelques efforts d’anticipation : « Nous nous sommes approchés des services médico-sociaux, des prestataires d’aide à domicile, de livraison de repas… Une attention particulière a été portée aux personnes les plus fragiles afin que les mesures nécessaires soient prises. »

Au ralenti, le fonctionnement des services municipaux sera néanmoins maintenu. Pour parer à toute éventualité, la mairie devrait installer un poste d’observation au sein du club-house Ondarraitz, et activer le plan communal de sauvegarde : « C’est une fête, mais il faut qu’elle soit sécurisée. »

Overview of Hendaye, France

Hendaye’s location on the border has made it an important point for commerce between both Spain and France. Historically speaking, this location has also proven to be problematic for the town since it has been involved in every conflict between the two countries. In 1793, Hendaye suffered a big loss when it was attacked by Spanish troops who completely destroyed the old town.

Thankfully, the tension between Spain and France slowly subsided at the beginning of the the 20th century. During the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939) the town even became a place of refuge for Spanish people looking to escape the war.

Today, Hendaye is a beach resort town with a beautiful 3 km sandy beach , frequented by both French and Spanish alike. In addition to the beach and town, there is also the impressive Château Abbadia located on the outskirts of the town. And if that wasn’t already enough, Hendaye also boasts some gorgeous views of the flysch rock formations that are easily accessible on coastal walking paths.

Hendaye's Top Things to Do & See

Franco and Hitler met at an armored wagon on the tracks, however, no agreement was reached as Franco’s demands were too high.

It is the perfect place to enjoy a drink or a meal on one of the many terraces. On Wednesday mornings there is usually more going on in the square since it is Hendaye’s market day.

Its interior, features a 13 th century cross over the chapel and wooden galleries that stretch along the side and back wall. These galleries were originally reserved for men attending mass.

The fronton is used for playing traditional Basque sports such as cesta punta and pelota mano as well as for celebration other events in Hendaye.

Along the path, you will also find some ruins of the walls built by Vauban and several cannons still pointing in the direction of Hondarribia.

The Bay Path spans a distance of 14 km, starting at the eastern end of Hendaye’s beach and continuing by the waterside up until the bridge to cross to Irun. The path also goes further in the other direction into Spain, crossing the town of Hondarribia.

Ondarraitz Beach

One of the Hendaye’s main attractions is the 3 km fine sandy beach, called Ondarraitz. This beach is popular among families and surfers alike, since there is plenty of space for everyone and some nice waves to surf.

Even on the most crowded of days, it is possible to venture further down the beach and find your own relatively secluded spot. Although be aware that the further east you get, the more likely you are to be among nudists.

Lined along Ondarraitz beach, there are also many big beautiful houses with a style similar to that of traditional Basque houses but with a little more modern twist.

The style is called neo-basque and most of these houses were built by the local architect Edmond Durandeau at the beginning of the 20 th century.

Built in 1884, this is the only building in Hendaye that has an arabic architectural style. For over 70 years, until 1980, the Old Croisière Casino was used as a casino, which is where its name comes from. Today, it is a luxury residence and also a shopping mall.

However, in doing so, he tripped and the rock fell out of his hand, broke in two and landed in the water of the beach of Hendaye.

Château Abbadia

The Château Abbadia is an eccentric mansion built for an even more eccentric individual, Antoine d’Abaddie . It was constructed between 1864 and 1879 by the architect Viollet le Duc in a neo-gothic style and has an exterior that was clearly inspired by castles from the middle ages.

The exterior is strongly contrasted by the interior which shows off a range of different styles such as Art Nouveau and various other oriental inspirations. What makes the building so special is its ability to mix all the interests and likes of Antoine d’Abbadie and somehow come up with something that is completely unique and that flows together.

Antoine d’Abbadie was born in 1810 in Ireland, from an Irish mother and a Basque father. He belonged to one of the 200 richest families of France, however, instead of just living from his family’s wealth, he made the best of the opportunities given to him and became a renaissance man in the truest sense.

Abbadie was an explorer, passionate for geography, astrology and various cultures of the world. He is best known for his work in Ethiopia , where he created the first cartographic map of the country. In addition, he also published a dictionary of Amharic, a Semitic language found in Ethiopia.

Abbadie was also a big proponent of the the Basque language and culture and published many academic works on the topic. For his contributions, he is often referred to as Euskaldenaita , meaning “the father of the Basques.”

Evidence of Abbadie’s interests and influences from his travels can be found all over the Chateau. The most notable are the paintings on the walls in the entrance that depict customs from Ethiopia. In addition there is an arabic smoking room, chapel, library, as well as an astronomical observatory which contains a meridian telescope that operated until 1979.

Shortly before his dead in 1897, Antoine d’Abbadie donated the chateau to the Academy of Science under one condition: they had to produce a catalogue of half-a-million stars in fifty years. The Academy of Science is still the owner today.

Chateau Abbadia is located less than 2 km away from the beach of Hendaye and is open to the public for visits. We highly recommend a visit if you are interested in architecture and art. It is a truly unique place.

* There is a free parking area right outside of the chateau. However, the space is quite small and it can get pretty crowded during the high season (July, August).

Domaine d’Abbadia (Abbadia Natural Park)

The Domaine d’Abbadia is a protected natural park that comprises 64 hectares surrounding the Chateau d’Abbadia. Within the Domaine d’Abbadia there are some hiking paths that primarily run along the coast and offer some superb ocean views.

Be aware that the Domaine d’Abbadia has a different owner than the chateau itself and actually belongs to the Coastal Protection Agency. The two properties are divided and it is not possible to cross from one to the other. This means that after visiting the castle, you have to jump back in the car, and drive for about 5 minutes to one of the three entrances of the Domaine d’Abbadia.

Once you have arrived at the Domaine’s parking, you will find informative panels and a map at the start of the trail. You will also find a couple of renovated farm houses (“baserri” in Basque) that function now as information points along the path itself.

Arriving to Hendaye

PLANE – There are two airports very close to Hendaye. The airport of San Sebastián / Hondarribia is only 10 minutes by car from Hendaye. It offers direct flights from Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife. There isn't a direct bus connection from the airport to Hendaye.

The Bayonne -Anglet- Biarritz Airport is 25 minutes away from Hendaye. It offers direct flights to many French and European cities such as Paris, London and Stockholm. The bus line 876 of the company ATCRB connects the airport with Hendaye.

CAR – Hendaye is located right outside of the road A-63. From France, the roads A-64 and A-63 will take you to Hendaye from places such as Bordeaux (2 h 15min) or Toulouse (3 h). Coming from Spain, get in the toll road AP-8 until you get to the border and then take the A-63.

Once in Hendaye, there is a free parking space in the old town, next to the fronton Gaztelu Zahar.

Car Rental – Search, Compare & Save

BUS – There isn't a bus station in Hendaye. Buses usually stop in the city center and at the train station. There are several bus companies offering transport from Hendaye to neighboring towns. ATCRB, Ouibus and transports64 provide all year service between Hendaye, Saint Jean de Luz and Bayonne.

TRAIN – Hendaye’s train station is located at Boulevard du Général de Gaulle. It is considered a “border” station (in French “gare-frontière”, in Spanish “estación internacional”), because on one end you have the French tracks (with a European width of 1,435 mm) on the other, the Spanish ones (with a Spanish width of 1,668 mm). Needless to say, if you are passing through Hendaye you will have to stop and change trains.

From Hendaye, there is a high speed line (TGV) to Paris multiple times a day, connecting the town with the French capital in 5 hours. There are also other intercity and local lines. Within the French Basque Country, there are direct trains to:

• St Jean de Luz (it takes about 12 min and costs around 3 €).
• Biarritz (it takes about 25 min and costs around 6 €).
• Bayonne (it takes about 35 min and costs around 7 €).

There is a line from EuskoTren known by the locals as “El Topo” which connects San Sebastian with Hendaye in 35 minutes. There is one train every half an hour, every day of the week and the trip costs 4,60 € (there and return).

The train station of Irun is only 5 km away from Hendaye and offers daily connections to Madrid and Portugal.

BOAT – There is a ferry service between Hendaye and Hondarribia. The boat is called “Bateau Marie-Louise” and it runs once every half an hour, taking around 10 minutes to get to Hondarribia.

Tour de France : Hendaye aussi se prépare

En vue du passage du Tour de France, le 3 juillet prochain, la commune d’Hendaye a pris ses dispositions en matière de circulation. La course fera une large incursion en ville ce jour-là et comme ailleurs sur le parcours, les écoles seront fermées.

Hendaye sera la porte d’entrée en Pays Basque Nord pour les coureurs du Tour de France, lors de la troisième étape. Le tracé fera une large incursion en ville pour l'occasion. Les coureurs emprunteront notamment le boulevard du général de Gaulle dans le secteur de la gare, celui du général Leclerc le long de la baie de Txingudi, le front de mer, puis le boulevard de l’Empereur en direction de la route d’Orio.

On connaît désormais les restrictions de circulation qui affecteront la commune le 3 juillet. Le passage de la caravane publicitaire étant prévu à 14h27 (celui de la course vers 16h10), la circulation sera interdite sur le parcours à partir de 12h30 (décision préfectorale) et reprendra après le passage de la course. À noter que le pont Saint-Jacques sera lui fermé dès 11 heures, l’itinéraire de la course étant bouclé plus tôt outre-Bidassoa.

Les rues perpendiculaires à l’itinéraire de la course seront des zones fortement perturbées et lors de la fermeture de la circulation, certains secteurs seront bloqués. La circulation de la rue d’Armatonde sera mise en double sens, exceptionnellement, dans la journée du 3 juillet. Pour plus de détails voir sur le site de la commune d’Hendaye.

Stationnement

Pour ce qui est du stationnement, il sera interdit sur le parcours à partir du samedi 1er juillet à 8 heures, jusqu’au lundi 3 juillet à 18 heures. Sur le boulevard de la Mer, il sera par contre interdit dès le dimanche 2 juillet à 20 heures, et ce jusqu’au lundi 3 juillet à 18 heures.

Par ailleurs, la circulation de l’ensemble du réseau de bus s’arrête à 12 heures, sauf la ligne Biriatou-Hendaye qui reste active (ligne 37). Pas de transports scolaires non plus ce jour-là puisque l’on sait désormais que les écoles seront fermées tout au long du parcours entre Hendaye et Bayonne. En revanche, les services publics de la Ville restent ouverts.

À Ciboure et Urrugne

À Ciboure, la circulation sera coupée sur la D810 de 12 heures à 17h30-18 heures, avec une fermeture de tous les accès débouchant sur cette route. Pour plus d’informations, voir sur le site de la commune. À Urrugne, le tronçon entre la route d’Orio et celle de la Glacière, sur la D810, sera également fermée entre 12 heures et 18 heures.

Tour de France : l’étape du 3 juillet 2023 jusqu’à Bayonne passe près du pont piéton Avenida, un symbole

Pendant l’étape du jour, les coureurs ont traversé la frontière franco-espagnole entre Hendaye et Irun. Sur leur parcours se trouvait un pont piéton fermé depuis deux ans.

TOUR DE FRANCE - C’est une brèche dans laquelle veulent s’engouffrer les élus locaux. Le passage du  Tour de France  a permis ce lundi 3 juillet la réouverture, provisoire pour l’heure, d’un pont à la frontière basque, entre Hendaye et Irun, fermé depuis deux ans pour « lutter contre l’immigration clandestine » . Les maires de ces deux villes souhaitent que cette réouverture soit permanente.

Par un arrêté en date du 28 juin, le préfet des Pyrénées-Atlantiques Julien Charles a autorisé une réouverture dérogatoire de ce pont piéton entre les deux villes frontalières, de 6 heures à minuit, pour l’entrée en France ce lundi du peloton de la Grande Boucle , qui arrive à Bayonne après deux premières étapes au Pays basque espagnol.

Il répondait ainsi à une demande de Kotte Ecenarro, le maire d’Hendaye, qui a vu dans le passage du Tour l’opportunité de rappeler son souhait, partagé par le maire d’Irun. « Étant donné que les coureurs emprunteront le pont routier Santiago, et pour permettre au public d’en profiter pleinement, je me permets de vous suggérer d’enlever les barrières et de rouvrir le pont piéton Avenida » , avait demandé le premier, comme le rapportait Sud Ouest le 22 juin .

Les coureurs en tête du peloton ont passé la frontière franco-espagnole sur le pont routier Santiago, tout près du pont Avenida rouvert, aux alentours de 16 h 45.

Les maires d’Hendaye et Irun sur les lieux

« Le pont est ouvert aujourd’hui, on ne fera rien pour le refermer » , avait déclaré lundi matin à l’AFP Kotte Ecenarro, maire d’Hendaye, qui a passé consigne à ses agents municipaux de ne pas réinstaller les barrières censées condamner l’accès en fin de journée. À 6 heures, il était présent sur les lieux, avec son homologue d’Irun Jose Antonio Santano. « C’est un pari que nous faisons, que l’État se rende compte qu’il n’est pas nécessaire de le refermer » , avance l’édile, qui milite depuis deux ans contre « une situation ridicule » .

Tout le long de la frontière franco-espagnole, huit points de passage sont fermés depuis 2021 pour « lutter contre l’immigration clandestine et la menace terroriste » , selon les autorités françaises. En janvier, le ministre de l’Intérieur Gérald Darmanin en visite à Barcelone a conditionné la réouverture des passages frontaliers à la création de « brigades mixtes » aux frontières, composées de policiers français et espagnols, affectées au contrôle des migrations.

« Nous souffrons d’un accord qui n’est pas encore passé dans la diplomatie franco-espagnole » , estime Kotte Ecenarro.

Les associations d’aide aux migrants s’insurgent, elles aussi, de cette fermeture. En novembre 2022, elles ont enlevé, symboliquement, ces mêmes barrières. Les militants locaux s’indignent de l’omniprésence policière qui pousse, selon eux, des migrants à tenter de passer par le fleuve frontalier de La Bidassoa, où sept personnes ont trouvé la mort par noyade depuis début 2021.

Trois Algériens ont aussi perdu la vie en octobre 202 1, percutés par un train à Ciboure, à quelques kilomètres d’Irún.

Every once in a while a captivating piece of historical information is uncovered, but time has often taken its toll and that information is lost to time itself. The hours and dedication required to restore its glory frequently means these items never reveal themselves to subsequent generations, but with a race as magical as the Tour de France comes passionate people dedicated to bringing history alive.

That’s exactly what has happened with the story of the 1930 Tour de France – now being re-told through a series of limited edition prints. Australian organisation The Cycling History Collection has just launched a range of 15 images from the year Frenchman Andre Leducq beat Italian Learco Guerra to the Tour title.

The series of images is a reminder of just how popular the Tour was, even in those early years, with thousands of people lining the streets when the only way to see the event was being there. Moments captured include Alfredo Binda’s Tour debut, breakaways on the famed 2556m Galibier in the Alps, Charles Pelissier on his way to an amazing eight stage victories and the aftermath of Leonida Frascarelli crashing out of the race.

Not only are the images an amazing piece of history, but also the story behind them. The collection has been brought back to life after a group - led by six-time Tour rider Stephen Hodge - purchased the original lanterns from an auction of Sir Hubert Opperman’s estate in 2004.

“We believe that Hubert Opperman, who rode the 1928 and 1931 editions of the Tour, used these lanterns for showing in town hall meetings that would have helped him raise the money to fund the Australian team to the 1931 event,” reveals Hodge.

Hendaye is a town in the French Basque Country, situated in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, bordering Spain. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Bidasoa River, along with its attractive landscapes, makes it a highly popular destination. Its expansive beach, stretching about three kilometers, is another major tourist draw. In this article, I will show you all the things to do in Hendaye, France.

If you're planning a quick visit, I recommend walking along the Boulevard de la Mer and exploring some of the nearby streets. On the other hand, if you have more time, you can discover its castle, visit the historic center, or even embark on a short hiking trail along its cliffs.

Where to stay in hendaye.

Hendaye is a great base when visiting the French Basque Country . This coastal town offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxurious hotels to cozy apartments. Opt for one of the seafront hotels if you want to indulge in dreamy views. On the other hand, if you’re on a budget, an apartment on the outskirts could be a perfect solution.

In any case, I recommend booking in advance, as the city tends to be full of tourists during the peak season. Below, I’ve listed various hotel options to suit different budgets:

• $: Hotel Bellevue . A 2-star hotel located in the Bay of Chingudy. They offer simple double rooms with lovely views. Breakfast is served.
• $$: Hotel Uhainak . A 3-star hotel located very close to the beach. It’s straightforward yet boasts excellent reviews. You’ll find single, double, and family rooms.
• $$$: Villa Enara . A charming villa located on the outskirts. All accommodations are beautifully decorated, and the property features a garden, swimming pool, and views.

Things to do in Hendaye, France

Below you can find the best things to do in Hendaye, one of the most popular towns to visit on the French Basque coast.

1. Stroll along the Bay of Chingudy

One of the things I enjoyed the most during my visit to Hendaye, and that I highly recommend, is strolling along the Boulevard of the Bay of Chingudy. It’s a lovely and serene landscaped walkway that runs along the bay’s coastline. You’ll come across several benches where you can sit and enjoy the views of Hondarribia, which is located on the other side of the river.

2. Walk along the Boulevard de la Mer

Speaking of strolls, another you shouldn’t miss is walking along the Boulevard de la Mer, located next to Ondarraitz Beach. It’s an ideal place to walk and soak in the town’s atmosphere. In the middle of the promenade, you’ll find the old casino of Hendaye, a building with architecture influenced by Arabic design. In 1980, this building ceased to be a casino and was transformed into luxury residences and a small commercial area.

3. Hendaye historic center

The historic center of Hendaye is located near the train station, which witnessed the meeting between Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler during World War II. Here, you’ll find the Republic Square, the heart of this Franco-Basque town. It’s a peaceful spot, perfect for sitting on one of its terraces while enjoying a drink. In the same square, you can see the town hall and the 16th-century Church of Saint-Vincent.

Even though the historic center is a bit far from the beaches and the more touristy area of Hendaye, if you have the time or want to learn more about the history of this little town, it’s worth a visit.

4. Abbadia Castle, a must-do in Hendaye

This castle was built between 1864 and 1884 on the cliffs located on the outskirts of Hendaye. It was designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc for Antoine d’Abbadia, a French explorer, geographer, ethnologist, and astronomer. The castle features a neo-Gothic style and draws inspiration from medieval forts. Inside, you’ll discover decorations influenced by the scientist’s numerous travels.

The building also features a former astronomical observatory and a church where Antoine d’Abbadie and his wife Virginie are buried. Visiting the castle is usually done on a guided tour, during which you’ll also have the opportunity to explore the library and various rooms decorated with period furniture. At certain times of the year, self-guided visits are also permitted.

• Price: €11.90 (guided tour), €10.50 (self-guided tour), €2.50 (garden + reception visit).
• Opening hours: Please check the Château d’Abbadia’s website as they vary throughout the year.

5. Domaine d’Abbadia hike

Right next to the castle is the Domaine d’Abbadia, a beautiful natural park with over 60 hectares, which you can explore by taking a walk along an easy trail. During the stroll, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy picturesque views of the sea, cliffs, and the bay. You can catch sight of the renowned twin rocks of Hendaye, observe the flysch , and even visit a World War II bunker.

To visit it, we parked the car at the Château d’Abbadia Parking and walked for about five minutes to reach the beginning of the trail. It took us around 25 minutes to complete the route at a peaceful pace.

6. Ondarraitz Beach

If your trip aligns with the warmest months of the year, there’s no better way to enjoy Hendaye than by taking a dip in its expansive beach. I’m referring to Ondarraitz Beach, which stretches for a total of 3 km. Quite impressive! As you can imagine, it’s a very spacious beach, perfect for families, surfers, groups of friends… There’s enough room for everyone!

If it’s quite crowded, you can head over to the area where the twin rocks are located and you’ll likely find more space. You should note that this part of the beach is often frequented by nudists.

7. Craft market

During our visit to Hendaye, we discovered a small craft market that’s worth visiting if you happen to be in town on a Tuesday, since it only takes place this day of the week. You’ll find it at the roundabout where Boulevard du Général Leclerc and other streets meet. The market offers a variety of foods, jewelry, and other handmade products.

• Opening Hours: Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

8. Explore Hendaye on its tourist train

A different way to experience this town, especially recommended if you’re traveling with children, is on Hendaye’s tourist train. The ride lasts for 30 minutes and includes an audio guide. You’ll cruise along the beach and the main streets while discovering the history and traditions of this Franco-Basque village.

For information, visit the tourist office in Hendaye, situated on the Boulevard de la Mer. There, you can also inquire about the availability of other guided tours.

• Hours: 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (April, May, June, September, and October); 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 6:00 PM (July and August). 
• Price: €7 (adults), €5 (ages 4 to 12), free (under 4 years old).

9. Stroll around the harbor

Lastly, another thing you can do in Hendaye is taking a walk around its renowned marina, situated at the mouth of the Bidasoa River. This marina boasts around 900 vessels and stands out as the only port on the Aquitaine coast accessible at any time of day and under all weather conditions. In the vicinity of the marina, you’ll find several bars and restaurants.

Places to visit near Hendaye

You might travel to Hendaye (France) to enjoy a peaceful stay and swim on its beach, or you might want to explore more areas of the French Basque Country. In that case, I’ll show you what places you shouldn’t miss located near Hendaye:

• Hondarribia (Spain). If you’re in this area and haven’t yet visited this small town in the province of Gipuzkoa, I highly recommend paying it a visit. Hondarribia is beautiful.
• Urtubie Castle. This castle, built in 1341, is located just 10 km from Hendaye. I encourage you to visit it and discover all its secrets.
• Saint-Jean-de-Luz. A little further up the coast, you’ll find this charming town, with a beautiful historic center. Take a look at all you can visit in Saint-Jean-de-Luz .
• Inland villages of the French Basque Country. If you decide to venture away from the coast, the interior of this region holds charming villages like Sare, Ainhoa, Espelette, or Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. All of them are beautiful!
• Guéthary and Bidart. These two coastal towns are less known, but if you have enough time, you should consider visiting. In Guéthary, I recommend exploring its small but charming port. On the other hand, don’t miss out on all there is to see and do in Bidart.

The route of our official Raid Pyrenees tour crosses the Pyrenees, from the town of Hendaye on the Atlantic Coast to Cerbère on the Mediterranean.

The route of this Raid Pyrenees cycling tour takes you over many of the Cols including the Tourmalet, Aubisque, Aspin, Portet d’Aspet and Peyresourde; with around 11,000 metres of climbing during the route.

Crossing the Pyrenees as part of an official Raid Pyrenees tour is a difficult undertaking, however, it also gives you the opportunity to ride most of the famous Cols of the Tour de France. These Cols are steeped in history as the route passes through Pyrenees Atlantique, Aquitaine, Hautes Garonne, Hautes Pyrenees, and Ariège to the finish in the Pyrenees Orientale.

This will be the first Grand Départ in Italy and the 26th that’s taken place abroad  First finale in Nice. Due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Paris, the race will not finish in the French capital for the first time.

Two time trials. 25 + 34 = 59km in total, the second of them taking place on the final Monaco>Nice stage. This will be the first time the race has seen a finale of this type for 35 years, the last occasion being the famous Fignon - LeMond duel in 1989.

Apennines (Italy), the Italian and French Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees will be the mountain ranges on the 2024 Tour route.

The number of countries visited in 2024: Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. Within France, the race will pass through 7 Regions and 30 departments.

The number of bonus points 8, 5 and 2 bonus seconds go to the first three classified riders, featuring at strategic points along the route (subject to approval by the International Cycling Union)these will have no effect on the points classification. Bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds will be awarded to the first three classified riders at road stage finishes.

Out of a total of 39, the locations or stage towns that are appearing on the Tour map for the first time . In order of appearance: Florence, Rimini, Cesenatico, Bologna, Piacenza, Saint-Vulbas, Gevrey-Chambertin, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Évaux-les-Bains, Gruissan, Superdévoluy, Col de la Couillole.

The number of sectors on white roads during stage nine, amounting to 32km in total .

The number of stages: 8 flat, 4 hilly, 7 mountain (with 4 summit finishes at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, Col de la Couillole), 2 time trials and 2 rest days.

The number of riders who will line up at the start of the Tour, divided into 22 teams of 8 riders each.

The height of the summit of the Bonette pass in the Alps, the highest tarmac road in France, which will be the “roof” of the 2024 Tour.

The total vertical gain during the 2024 Tour de France.

PRIZE MONEY

A total of 2,3 million euros will be awarded to the teams and riders including € 500,000 to the final winner of the overall individual classification .

Le pont piéton Hendaye-Irun rouvert puis refermé après le passage du Tour de France, les élus en colère

Rouvert le lundi 3 juillet à l'occasion du passage du Tour de France, le Pont Avenida entre Hendaye et Irun a de nouveau été fermé par les services de l'État ce mardi matin.

L'absurdité de la situation. Le pont piéton Avenida, à la frontière basque, entre Hendaye et Irún, fermé depuis le 14 janvier 2021 pour "lutter contre l'immigration clandestine" et au nom du risque terroriste, a été rouvert lundi 3 juillet pour le passage du Tour de France, puis aussitôt refermé mardi matin, selon le maire d'Hendaye.

La préfecture des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, qui avait pris un arrêté dérogatoire pour autoriser l'accès le temps d'une journée , argue d'une ouverture "nécessaire" au bon déroulé de la course cycliste mais "exceptionnelle et temporaire" , ce que déplore l'édile, Kotte Ecenarro.

Des discussions en cours entre gouvernements

Lundi, en fin de journée, il avait passé consigne aux agents municipaux de ne pas réinstaller les barrières sur ce pont piéton mais "la police les a remises ce (mardi) matin sur instruction de la préfecture" , dit-il. "Le maire d'Irún, que j'ai eu au téléphone, est aussi furieux. Tout ça est absurde."

De son côté, le préfet des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Julien Charles, justifie cette décision par le fait que des discussions gouvernementales entre la France et l'Espagne sont en cours, et qu'une décision définitive ne peut être prise avant la fin de ces négociations.

PWR-Foil, à Canet-en-Roussillon, est aujourd’hui le numéro 1 dans son domaine et l’acteur majeur d’une discipline en fort développement. Quatre ans après son lancement du côté de Perpignan, l’entreprise a trouvé une belle vitesse de croisière.

Bien droits sur leurs planches de surf à moteur électrique avec la petite gâchette de commandes à la main, Christophe Defrance et ses amis ont fait sensation sur le plan d’eau de La Franchi à Leucate pour le Mondial du Vent qui s’est déroulé le mois dernier. Le grand public a découvert, de visu, cette étrange machine (une planche équipée d’un foil et d’une hélice pour se propulser) qui donne le sentiment, déroutant, de littéralement voler à 40 cm au-dessus de la mer.

« La sensation est enivrante, addictive. Elle est très prisée des pratiquants de kite, de planche à voile et de surf » explique Christophe Defrance le président-fondateur de PWR-FOIL, le leader français de la conception et de la fabrication de ces « plans nautiques motorisés » comme défini par la nouvelle réglementation de la fédération française de motonautisme pour faire la différence avec les jet-skis.

« Il nous a fallu développer des compétences singulières »

Ces surfs électriques volants sont conçus et fabriqués dans les ateliers PWR depuis quatre ans, aujourd’hui à Canet-en-Roussillon après Perpignan, qui emploient vingt personnes dont quatre dédiées à la recherche et au développement. « Pour parvenir, à mettre au point nos planches motorisées, il nous a fallu développer des compétences singulières en matière d’électricité et d’électronique dans l’eau, dans l’étanchéité » poursuit Christophe Defrance passionné de glisse qui avait fait ses premières armes industrielles avec la mise au point de paddles.

« Aujourd’hui, la pratique du surf sur les principaux spots du Pays basque est devenue difficile. Trop de monde. Avec le e-foil, J’utilise le moteur pour me positionner sur la vague et même sur des vagues inaccessibles, à 400 voire 500 m du bord. Pédagogiquement cela permet de progresser plus rapidement. En cas de chute, on peut redémarrer de là où l’on se trouve » explique Xabi Adhemard venu d’Hendaye pour cette première compétition officielle organisée au Mondial du Vent et remportée par le suisse Christophe Carpi. Paradoxe absolu, la pratique du E-foil sur les plans d’eau helvétique reste toujours à ce jour interdite. En attendant de faire le distinguo réglementaire entre les jet-skis et les e-foils silencieux et non-polluant.

Un e-foil possède une autonomie de 1h30 et coûte a minima 6 990 euros. On peut pratiquer dans une quarantaine de centres de location en France : Surf & Kite au Barcarès, The Hydro Expérience à Saint-Cyprien. Mark Cavendish Abandons 2023 Tour de France on Stage 8

The Manx Missile will end his career tied with Eddy Merckx for the all-time Tour de France stage wins record.

Mark Cavendish abandoned the 2023 Tour de France after a Stage 8 crash, prematurely ending his final Tour. Cavendish is tied with Eddy Merckx at 34 Tour de France stage wins—the most in history.

Cavendish was involved in a crash in the peloton and was lying on the ground, holding his clavicle. He was unable to finish the stage and officially made the decision to withdraw.

His abandonment comes one day after Cavendish nearly won a Stage 7 sprint, but an apparent mechanical issue cost him a shot at sole possession of the record.

Cavendish, now 38, broke into professional cycling in 2005. A few years later, he won his first Tour de France stage on Stage 5. He added three more stage victories during that 2008 Tour, establishing himself as the premiere sprinter in the world. In 2011, he won both the green jersey points competition at the Tour de France and the rainbow jersey as world champion.

Cav won TdF stages in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2021. In 2021, Cavendish enjoyed a comeback season, winning three stages to tie with Merckx for the all-time record.

In 2022, Cavendish was left off the Deceuninck–Quick-Step team for the Tour de France in a controversial decision by team manager Patrick Lefevere, so he didn’t get his shot to break Merckx’ record. He left the Quick-Step squad at the end of last year, and after months of contract speculation, he signed with Astana Qazaqstan for the 2023 season.
