Looking for the best bus tours in London? Don’t miss this insider’s guide.

London is a historic city packed with legendary landmarks, monuments, and attractions. The only problem with that is there’s almost too much to see and do!

That’s why guided bus tours are by far the best way to see a city if you are just here for a whistle stop. And as cities go, London has some of the best.

Whilst there is a ‘bus-load’ of traditional tours that concentrate on simply exemplifying London’s highlights, there are some that serve up the city with a twist.

Why not admire Buckingham Palace as you indulge in afternoon tea? Or drive through Leicester Square as a genuine West End performer serenades you?

Whether you want to see the historic side of the city or the futuristic side, you’ll find the experience for you on this list of the best London sightseeing bus tours.

The Best London Bus Tours

Big bus tour.

Big Bus Tour

First up is the classic hop-on-hop-off London bus option. Almost every major city around the world has one of these, and we have to say, London’s is undoubtedly one of the best. With your one or two-day ticket, the open-top Big Bus Tour takes you to all of the bucket-list landmarks throughout the city on a two-hour round trip.

Starting at Marble Arch, it transports you to Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, London Eye, Covent Garden, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, and finally Victoria where you can reach Buckingham Palace.

Along the way, expect quality commentary from your audio guide on the significance of the streets and buildings you pass.

By the end of your Big Bus Tour, you’ll feel like London is your second home.

Best for: seeing the city’s highlights at your own pace

Although London today is a fun and exciting place to be, that wasn’t always the case. You see, it has a somewhat gruesome and gruelling history. Think torture, execution, and mass burials. Once you board the retro Routemaster bus, you’ll be greeted by a costumed guide who tells theatrical horror stories throughout the 75-minute tour about the legends of the London landmarks.

Along the way, you will pass Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Shard, and the London Eye. There’s nowhere else in the city that will let you into London’s darkest secrets about the torture techniques used in the Tower of London, the mass burial in Cross Bones Graveyard, and much more.

On this dazzling one hour and 45 mute tour, you are guaranteed to see the very best of the city’s jolly light displays. You’ll even pass by Trafalgar Square where London’s official Christmas tree, dressed head to toe in glittering lights, reaches high into the night sky.

Board their high-end double decker bus complete with panoramic views and extra sumptuous seats, and let the wait staff wine and dine you as you are chauffeured for two hours around the city’s famous sights.

While the lunch tour tempts you with its three or four-course menu featuring simmered beef shank red fruit and pistachio ganache macarons, the six-course dinner menu may just win you over. Plus, you can add a wine pairing to make your tour that bit more mouth-watering.

Wartime London Bus Tour

Statue on London War Tour

Having been almost completely destroyed by the Blitz, the scars of World War II can still be seen in London today — if only you know where to look. Fortunately, the Wartime London Bus Tour ’s guides have you covered.

Embark with them on a sobering three-hour journey back to this tumultuous time. Along the way, you will see buildings still damaged by shrapnel, original signs pointing to air-raid shelters, and monuments celebrating wartime heroes.

As you do, the guides will share both heart-breaking and heart-warming stories of events that unfolded in London during the Blitz. And if that doesn’t choke you up enough, wait until you hear the old news broadcasts, sound effects, and period music that accompany them.

Best of all, you will get to visit the actual wartime headquarters where Allied forces tactfully planned the German defeat, and other monumental sites.

Best for: a true insight into London’s modern history

Price: starting at £55 per adult

The Beatles Evening Bus Tour

Beatles Bus Tour

The A Ticket to Ride tour may not be on the Beatles’ actual tour bus (we wish), but if you board it, you’ll be taken to the very spots where the band lived, recorded, hung out, and played in London.

Photo stops include the iconic Abbey Road crossing, video filming locations, the Scotch of St James Club, and even the rooftop where the band played their parting gig. After seeing Paul McCartney’s house, the Magical Mystery Tour set, and much more, it will be impossible to stop the Beatlesmania from resurfacing.

Throughout the tour, a guide will deliver fun facts, stories, and rare insights into the lives and legends of each Beatles member. And of course, what would a Beatles tour be without a few of their best songs and videos being played as you go?]

Best for: seeing the city’s alternative sights

Price: starting from £64 per person

London Night Tour

London by Night Christmas

It’d be wrong to say that London comes to life at night (it’s well and truly alive by day), but there’s certainly a charm to seeing this city lit up in all its glory. This London Night Tour will take you around the glitzy city so you can soak it all in and snap away for the perfect pic to grace your Instagram photo dump.

This tour comes with an English-speaking guide and audio guides in eleven languages. Through the 90 minute ride you’ll pass by Big Ben with its illuminated clockface, The Houses of Parliament and skirt the River Thames where you can see all sorts of folk living London life to its fullest.

Probably the highlight of the whole tour though: A run through the neon wonderland that is Piccadilly Circus – Never anything less than impressive by night.

Best for: Seeing London all lit up and looking pretty

Price: From £27 per person

Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour With the London Eye

London Eye

This great option combines two great London sightseeing attractions: a hop-on-hop-off bus tour and The London Eye.

You’ll be able to jump on and off the bus tour at any point as it skirts along side the River Thames between Westminster and The Tower of London, taking in some of London’s most historic buildings.

You’ll then have the chance to hop off the bus and onto the London Eye to take a spin on what is arguably London’s most iconic landmark (sorry Big Ben). Up there you’ll catch the city from an angle that a tour bus just can’t provide, before getting back on the bus and finishing your tour.

The tour itself comes with audio guides and can be taken in options of one, two, and three day tickets. A ride on The London Eye is included in the price of the tour ticket.

Best for: Truly seeing all of London

Comparing London's hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses

Tootbus compared with big bus + golden tours with previously asked questions.

Tootbus (Original London Tour) Open Top Sightseeing Bus

Tootbus has routes to major sights and free cruises

London's hop-on sightseeing bus tour providers

Nowadays sightseeing tours of London are dominated by London's three hop-on, hop-off open top sightseeing operators:

1. Tootbus (formerly The Original Tour) 2. Big Bus 3. Golden Tours

If you see anybody else offering a hop-on, hop-off tour for London they are acting as an agent for one of the above.

At first inspection all three London sightseeing operators offer a very similar product. But spend an hour or so studying each service and you begin to identify the differences.

This page aims to save you that time and present the differences as concisely as possible.

The traditional guided coach tour of London is still available, but in terms of market share this is tiny compared with London's popular hop-on, hop off sightseeing buses.

Premium Tours also run a small fleet of open top vintage red London buses. These fall somewhere between the guided coach tour and the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing buses. The London red vintage bus tour has no hop-on, hop-off facility and is basically a guided orientation tour of London's main sights with a few photo stops and a river cruise.

Tootbus (The Original Tour) v Big Bus v Golden Tours comparison

Big Bus hop on bus - top deck evening tour

All 3 London sightseeing tour operators are established operators in the London market. Big Bus and Tootbus (formerly The Original Tour) are owned by large corporates and Golden Tours, the relative newcomer entered the market several years ago after a long history of offering the traditional guided coach tours, which they still do.

All 3 operators offer similar packages, but more differences have opened up in recent years, see below for more details.

Walking Tours

Both Golden Tours and Big Bus offer highly regarded professionally guided walking tours included with your ticket (selected tickets only).

With Golden Tours you can choose from a Jack The Ripper Walking Tour or Coronation Walking Tour.

Big Bus offer THREE FREE TOURS with their Essential and Explore tickets: Changing of the Guard Walking Tour, City of London Walking Tour and a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour. Each tour is 1.5 hours long.

Tootbus do not offer guided walking tours but instead give you the chance to download "Tootwalk" to your phone: a choice of three self-guided walks.

River cruises

River cruises are available with all three tour companies, but not all tours automatically include them; the cheaper (both 24-hr and calendar day) tours do not. If this is important to you, do check carefully before booking.

Routes and vehicles

All operators offer an open top bus experience with routes that all cover the major sights in central London.

Although they each have a different number of routes, where they visit is almost identical, with all three sightseeing tour operators almost duplicating each others routes in the very heart of London.

You can click through on the links below to study each operators route map in detail.

Tootbus are the only operator to offer the unique Kids Tour which is a non-stop tour (not hop-on, hop off) but which is cheaper and offers a commentary that is very family friendly. In addition they are also the only company to offer a 1.5-hr Bar Bus tour , again, not hop-on hop off but a memorable experience with bar on board.

Vehicles used are almost identical, all offer free Wi-Fi and audio guides providing commentary in English and at least one other language.

Big Bus Tour map London 2024

Golden Tours route map London 2024

Live guides vs audio guides

This is one area that has also changed in recent years. Traditionally all three companies offered live guides on at least one of their hop-on tours.

Today you will find this is no longer the case. If having a live guide is important to you there are a couple of options, but none of them are hop-on, hop-off but rather 60 or 90-minute continuous sightseeing tours.

Golden Tours have a live guide on their 90 min non-stop tour.

Tootbus have a live guide on their London Kids Tour and London Christmas Tour.

Big Bus no longer offer a live guide service on any of their tours.

Prices are similar to the 1-day tour but many people really value having a live guide if English is a language they speak fluently.

Tootbus no longer offer the range of languages it once used to; now audio is either in English or French. Big Bus have an audio guide with 5 languages. Golden Tours have the most with 11 languages.

Times and frequencies of buses

All operators start up around 8.30am and start running down the service around 5pm. Evening services are also additionally available as a separate tour with all three operators.

All three operators, even in the winter months operate frequent bus services, however of the three operators perhaps Golden Tours is slightly less frequent. You shouldn't generally have to wait more than twenty minutes however.

London's hop-on buses - differences between tickets for all 3 operators

Tootbus (Original Tour) hop on bus London

Standard tour ticket durations

24, 48 or 72-hr durations.

All operators offer tickets with 24 and 48-hr validity periods; Tootbus and Golden Tours also offer 72-hr tickets.

In addition Tootbus offer a 60-min Bar Bus ticket, while Golden Tours offer a fully guided 1.5-hr Express ticket (see above).

Tootbus call their tickets, '1-day' and '2-day' but the actual validity is 24, 48 or 72 hours.

Golden Tours offer cheaper calendar tours (which run from when you buy them to the end of the day) in addition to 24/48/72-hr tickets. The calendar day tickets do not include the river cruise.

Shorter tours/express tours (not hop on, hop off)

Both Tootbus and Golden Tours offer shorter tours, of 1.5 hrs which are different to the traditional hop on, hop off buses in that you stay on them for the duration of the tour. Tootbus call theirs as 'Bar Bus' as drinks are available on board (over 18s only). River cruises are not included with these tours.

For Golden Tours this is their only product featuring a live guide. Although much shorter therefore, the price is nearly as much as a 24-hr hop on bus tour.

Tootbus' similar offering is in the same price band but does not feature the live guide. Many people really appreciate the difference between having a live guide and an audio guide.

Evening tours (not hop on, hop off)

All three companies offer evening tours which are non-stop for around 1.5 hours. Again, Golden Tours is the only operator offering the live guide on this experience, though Tootbus have a live guide on their Kids Tour and Christmas Lights tour.

Big Bus also include a separate evening tour with their Explore ticket.

Discounted - cheapest tickets

Hop-on, hop off sightseeing tickets are freely available in London from hotels, tourist centres and on the day from the representatives of the tour companies you find around the bus stops.

Do not expect to find discount vouchers or codes, if you do find one it's the exception rather than the rule.

However, cheaper tickets can be found using our banners on this page. By booking online ahead of our hop-on, hop-off bus tour you will always save money.

Our partners Travel Compendium bring you exclusive discounts on hop on bus tours in London with Golden Tours and Big Bus.

Pre-booking tickets - flexibility and ease/cost of obtaining tickets

All three operators now require you to select your date of tour at purchase. However all 3 tours companies offer a 'flexible booking guarantee' should you need to amend your tour date at any time (Tootbus allow this up 12 months from date of purchase, Golden Tours allow a cancellation for full refund up to 24 hours before boarding, Big Bus require 72 hours to amend your booking.)

For Big Bus and Golden Tours tickets are e-tickets and are shown to the driver at your first bus stop. Here they give you a receipt which you keep for the validity of your hop-on bus tour.

Tootbus accept mobile tickets but encourage you to download your tickets on to their app, for ease of use.

Both Big Bus and Tootbus offer an app offering similar features such as:

Maps, route planning, real time bus tracking, walking directions to nearest bus stops, nearby eateries and attractions and even the secrets of must-see landmarks with audio commentaries.

With Tootbus you can also import your pass (tickets) ready to scan directly on the bus.

London Pass - choice of 2 hop on bus companies: Big Bus or Golden Tours

Big Bus or Golden Tours hop on bus included with London Pass

The London Pass is a flat rate sightseeing pass to many (but not all) of London's main sightseeing attractions. You can buy a London Pass for 1, 2, 3, 6 or 10 day durations

The London Pass gives you entry into more than 60 London tourist attractions and a river cruise on the River Thames.

The London Pass also now includes use of either Golden Tours or Big Bus hop-on hop-off bus for one calendar day, whatever the duration of the London Pass.

Tootbus are not part of the London Pass scheme.

Key points of the London Pass Ho Ho bus offer

You can choose to ride on the Golden Tours  or  Big Bus hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. Tootbus (Original Tour) is not covered.

The Ho Ho bus offer is for one calendar day  not  for 24 hours.

Most people use the Ho Ho facility on the first day of their London Pass, but there is nothing stopping using it on another day when the London Pass is valid.

The Ho Ho bus offer with London Pass doesn't include the walking tours and river cruises included in the standard tickets issued by the Ho Ho companies concerned, only the bus tour (but you do get a river cruise included in the London Pass separately anyway)

You show your London Pass to the driver or tour guide of the first bus you board. They will scan your London Pass and issue you with a separate ticket for the bus company concerned valid for the rest of the day. You cannot switch to the other bus company once you have made your first journey.

London Pass more details

Free river cruises

St Paul's from top deck Tootbus tours London

While all three tour companies have a river cruise option, not every tour comes with a river cruise automatically. The cheaper tours for example, do not feature a river cruise.

Both Big Bus and Tootbus use the same river cruise company, City Cruises , while Golden Tours use Thames River Sightseeing.

Golden Tours/Thames River Sightseeing operate a cruise between Westminster Pier and Greenwich Pier.

Tootbus and Big Bus cruises run between Westminster and Tower Pier (or Greenwich Pier for Big Bus Premium or Deluxe ticket holders).

All operators run river services approximately every 40 minutes and later services are usually available until around 6pm in the summer season from April.

The Thames Cruise should be a highlight of your day and we recommend you take advantage of the facility.

Thames river cruise ticket options by company

A complimentary one-way river cruise offered by  City Cruises  (lasting around thirty minutes) is included in your Big Bus London ticket.

Tootbus' cheaper ticket doesn't come with the river cruise included - look for it on the 'Must See London' ticket. Your one-way river cruise starts at either Westminster pier or Tower of London pier.

Golden Tours

Golden Tours' river cruise is only available on the 24-hr ticket, not the calendar day ticket. There is also another ticket option to choose 24-hrs without cruise. Cruises are also one-way.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

What to Do if You Only Have One Day in London

L ondon is a city with a rich history and lots to do, yet it’s so well connected that you can fit a lot in when you only have a day.

If you want to know how to fit the best things to do in London into one day, we have the perfect, family-friendly one-day itinerary for you. We’ll also give you some other ideas, just in case you have enough time to explore more.

*Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if you click a link and purchase something we have recommended. Please check out our  disclosure policy  for more details. Thank you for your support!

Must See Sights If You Only Have One Day in London

1. hop-on, hop-off bus tour.

London has many bus tour companies that will take you on several routes around the city. You can get a day tour ticket for one of three operators online , and some include a river cruise, which you will want for this itinerary.

Each of the operators has different route options. So, make sure you do your research into the landmarks you’d like to see and make sure they are on your route.

At most London landmarks, you will find tour bus representatives who will sell you tickets. So if you are unsure about the route you need, they will be able to help.

If this is your first time, and you only have a day in the city, a London bus tour is the best way to fit it all in. The most scenic routes take around three hours.

Although exploring London is great on foot when you have kids, it’s much easier to sit on an open-top bus to see the top sights. You’re likely to see Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery, and Westminster Bridge from aboard the buses.

Another great thing about these buses is that you can hop on and hop off this public transportation if you have extra time. If you’d like to stop and look around a particular landmark, you can simply jump off, explore, and then get back on the central line. Just remember, if you’ve given up a seat at the top of the bus, you’re unlikely to get another!

2. Sky Garden

After ticking off all of the major landmarks on the ground, see if you can spot them from the air. One of the top attractions in London is the Sky Garden. This 160-meter tall building is on the Thames River near The Shard. It’s one of the most beautiful places, and if you only have limited time to visit London, seeing London from the sky makes for a relaxing and perfect day.

You can walk around the garden, take in the panoramic views, and play a game of I Spy with the London skyline. If you’re planning on having lunch here, you can purchase food and drink from their cafe.

The Sky Garden has free admission, but make sure you book well in advance to avoid long lines.

3. Thames Clipper

The Thames Clippers are a fantastic way to explore the center of the city and see everything along the River Thames.

Hop on at the dock just outside the Tower of London, and sit outside on the back of the boat to watch the landmarks go by. Or, if you want something a little comfier, sit on the chairs inside where it’s less windy.

From here, you’ll spot St Paul’s Cathedral, The Shard, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament. You can hop off at the London Eye Waterloo Pier and take a walk across the river to the West End, depending on your travel time.

4. West End Show

If you’re still not tired, then the perfect place to round off a day in London is a trip to the theatre .

When it comes to child-friendly West End Theatre, the best options are Matilda, Frozen, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and The Lion King. All of which are spectacular in their own right.

If you’ve got a Ronald Dahl fanatic in your family, then Matilda is a fun, dynamic show. It has colorful scenery and fantastic singing and dancing from its cast.

For the Disney fans in your family, The Lion King or Frozen are the clear options. The scripts are close to the films, with some fun modern-day references thrown in to keep them fresh.

5. The Tower of London

Once you’ve spotted all the things to see in London from the air, head back down to the ground. Here you can find out about its history and see the Crown Jewels!

You can begin your tour of the Tower of London with Yeoman Warders. These Wardens live on the grounds of the Tower and guard the Crown Jewels. They take you in and around the area for a guided tour, pointing out particular places where history was made. This is one of the most popular attractions and one of our favorite things to do in London with teens . This is why it’s a good idea to get an early start and make this your first stop.

Once you’ve seen the knight’s armor, the bloody tower, and the ravens that live on the grounds, head to the vault, where you can see the Queen’s crown.

The queue may be a little long, but it’s worth it to see them and other pieces of jewelry that belong to the royal family.

Other options for London in a Day

6. buckingham palace state rooms.

If you’re visiting in the summer, a day trip to the staterooms of the royal palace is a great option. Each year the Palace opens its doors to the public and displays a different exhibit. In the past, there has been a collection of childhood toys of the royals and their wedding attire.

7. The Science and The Natural History Museum

The Science Museum and The Natural History Museum in London are two separate museums. However because they are attached, it’s easy to visit them both. They have a lot of interactive exhibits, games, and activities for children, and like most museums in London, they both have free entry.

Take a stroll through exhibits like The Garden, a kids’ sensory paradise, Exploring Space, and the Flight Gallery in the Science Museum. See the Mammals Gallery, the Aurora Collection of over 300 diamonds, and a gigantic blue whale skeleton suspended from the Gothic ceilings at the Natural History Museum.

If you’re in London for a short visit, don’t miss these extraordinary London attractions.

If it goes anything like the dates played so far, Take That fans can expect the band to take to the stage some time between 8.30pm and 9pm . Expect a slightly earlier start time on April 28, as the curfew and doors are both earlier.

Who is supporting the band?

None other than Olly Murs. He’ll likely appear on stage around 7.25pm.

Jay Duplass and Kelvin Yu are the latest additions to the cast of FX ‘s limited series adaptation of “Dying for Sex,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is based on the podcast of the same name. Duplass and Yu join previously announced series lead Michelle Williams and cast members Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, David Rasche, and Esco Jouléy.

The official description of the series states “Molly (Williams), a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, leaves her husband of 15 years and begins to explore her sexuality. She gets the courage and support to go on this adventure from her best friend (Slate), who stays by her side all the way to the very end.”

As an actor, Duplass is known for his roles in shows like “Transparent,” “The Mindy Project,” “Industry,” “The Chair,” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Behind the camera, he and his brother, Mark, co-created the HBO series “Togetherness” alongside Steve Zissis. The brothers also co-created HBO’s “Room 104” and co-wrote and directed feature films like “Baghead” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” among several other collaborations.

He is repped by CAA and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment.

Yu is a seven-time Emmy nominee for his work on the writing team of “Bob’s Burgers,” winning the award in 2017 for best animated program. He also recently created the Disney+ series “American Born Chinese.” He has appeared on shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Master of None” as well as films like “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Milk.”

He is repped by Writ Large, WME, and Yorn Levine.

Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock are writers, executive producers, and showrunners on “Dying for Sex.” Williams will produce in addition to starring. Katherine Pope, Nikki Boyer, and Leslye Headland will also executive produce along with Jen Sargent, Marshall Lewy, Aaron Hart and Hernan Lopez of Wondery Inc. 20th Television is the studio.
