25 Best Things to Do in Kuta (Bali)

Kuta is probably the most famous part of Bali and with good reason. Not only is it the home of the iconic Kuta Beach but it also has a swinging nightlife scene that keeps going into the wee small hours. The coastline here is covered in soft golden sand and the beachfront is flanked with a long promenade dotted with cafes and myriad restaurants.

If you are looking for shopping then you will be spoiled for choice and you can enjoy local markets mixed with upscale shopping malls. There are fine dining options here aplenty as well as quaint local guesthouses and you can spent time walking around the little streets that bisect the area and taking in all the sights.

Popular pastimes here include surfing, swimming, and enjoying the various beach games available, or you can make use of one of the many spas and spend some time relaxing and pampering yourself. Whatever you choose to do, there is no chance of being bored in Kuta, and even those with families will find a huge amount to enjoy away from the typical nightlife venues.

Here are the 25 best things to do in Kuta …

1. Visit Waterbom

Waterbom, Kuta, Bali

Waterbom Bali is one of Kuta’s oldest institutions and is not to be missed, especially if you are travelling with children.

This is one of the largest water parks in Bali and you will find a huge number of rides here such as the Boomerang and the Superbowl, and if you are feeling brave there are sheer drop slides such as the Climax.

For younger children there are also children’s pools and some eateries where you can get snacks and light meals to keep you going throughout the day.

2. Have lunch at Warung Murah

Warun Murah

Kuta is packed with restaurants serving international fare but if you want to go local (as well you should) then opt for lunch at Warung Murah.

This is one of the top local warungs in town and you can get traditional Indonesian food at low prices as Warung Murah actually means ‘Cheap Cafe’ in Indonesian.

Some of the highlights include fish hot off the grill and served with rice and a few vegetable side dishes, or you can try the piping hot chicken satay with a side of spicy peanut sauce.

3. Go shopping at Upcycle

Upcycle, Kuta

5. Go for a drink at Apache Reggae Bar

Apache Reggae Bar

Apache Reggae Bar is one of the most famous night spots in Kuta and whenever you go you can expect something of a party.

There is live music played here as well as the usually reggae favorites and you can also enjoy plenty of drinks as you dance the night away.

Note that cheap drinks are often made with fake alcohol in Bali so it is probably best to stick to the local beer called Bintang which is a crisp refreshing larger.

6. Go shopping at Beachwalk

Beachwalk Mall

If you want to go to the mall in Kuta then look no further than Beachwalk which runs along the main strip adjacent to the beach.

The mall is one of the newest in the area and has everything you could want with a mix of international shops, restaurants, and cafes.

As well as the gallery you can also find some handicraft shops selling souvenirs and there is also a rooftop bar complete with resident DJ.

7. Enjoy Upside Down World Bali

Upside Down World Bali

Upside Down World Bali, as the name suggests, is a fun attraction which is a great choice if you are looking for something to do on a rainy day in Bali.

Located inside, there are seven different rooms where the furniture is the wrong way round which makes it look like you have just walked into a new world that defies gravity.

Photo opportunities abound here and children will love to pose with each of the different wacky scenarios.

8. Admire Vihara Dharmayana Kuta

Vihara Dharmayana Kuta

For a little bit of culture in Kuta head for Vihara Dharmayana which is also sometimes called Leeng Gwan Kuta Temple or Kongco Bio Kuta Chinese Temple.

This is one of the main religious venues in Kuta and it sits in a leafy backstreet, but you will still be able to spot it from afar thanks to its ornate roof.

Vihara Dharmayana is a Buddhist temple which is said to be over two centuries old and you will find intricate carvings here as well as colorful murals and a scenic courtyard which is covered in aromatic sticks of incense.

9. Go surfing at Kuta Beach

Surfer at Kuta Beach in Bali

One of the main reasons to come to Kuta Beach is for the opportunity to surf as this makes the perfect spot for beginners.

The reason for this is that Kuta Beach lies on a soft sand bar as opposed to a spiky reef, so you will be able to learn to surf safe in the knowledge that you won’t get hurt on some jagged coral if you wipe out.

You can rent a board here for the day and also take a surf lesson with one of the many instructors along the beach, although if you prefer something a little easier then you can also rent a body board and catch the waves that way.

At the end of the day crowds flock here for the sunsets which are best enjoyed with a cold beer.

Museum Kain

Museum Kain is located at the top of the Beachwalk mall in Kuta and is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

There are few cultural attractions of this kind in Kuta and you can learn all about how indigenous textiles are made in Indonesia by perusing the various galleries on show.

Many of the pieces feature colorful batik, a technique where wax is dripped on fabric to make a design before dyes are added, and you can also even make your own pieces with the help of one of the on-hand experts.

There is also the opportunity to buy some of the pieces on show as a souvenir of your trip to Indonesia.

13. Have fun at Pandora Experience Bali

Pandora Experience Bali

Pandora Experience Bali taps into the new craze for escape game adventures and teams of anything from two to ten players are welcome.

The aim of the game is to solve a series of riddles and puzzles in order to get out of the room in under two hours and this is a great way to spend an afternoon if the weather is poor or you just want to give your brain a good workout after too many days spent lazing on the beach.

14. Explore Dream Museum Zone

Dream Museum Zone

Dream Museum Zone, which is sometimes just called DMZ, is another fun indoor attraction in Kuta that is made up of a range of huge wall paintings which are designed to look interactive.

15. Visit Bali Sea Turtle Society

18. Sunbathe on Legian Beach

Legian Beach

Legian Beach is located a little way along from Kuta Beach and actually you can walk from one to the other.

The main reason to come to Legian Beach is down to the fact that it is less crowded and the sand here is a little cleaner.

If you want to get away from the crowds that flock to Kuta Beach then this is a good choice although it doesn’t have as many amenities as the main strip.

19. Pay your respect at the Bali Memorial

Bali Memorial

The Bali Memorial is one of the most moving visits in Kuta and is dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the Bali Bomb in 2002.

20. Have a drink at Sky Garden Lounge

Sky Garden

Sky Garden is the largest nightclub in Kuta and stretches over a dizzying number of floors.

That said, the real reason to come here is for the Sky Garden Lounge which is located on the top floor and is a great place to come in the early evening when the sun is starting to set.

You will get some great views across Kuta from here and they also do various buffet dinner promotions where you can enjoy free flow drinks and food before the main party gets started.

21. Go shopping at Surfer Girl

Surfer Girl

If you are looking for some new surf gear in Kuta then you need to head to Surfer Girl.

Mads Lange Tomb

Located on Jalan Tuan Langa is Mads Lange Tomb which is one of the few historic sites of note in Kuta.

24. Grab a bite to eat at Warung Nikmat

Warung Nikmat

Anyone looking to try some of the local fare should head to this little Javanese joint which is known for its delicious local plates at cheap prices.

Some of the dishes on offer include traditional oxtail soup as well as curries and vegetables side dishes, and you should make sure not to miss the beef rendang which is beef cooked in a thick chili and coconut milk sauce.

This is more of a lunchtime venue than anything so make sure to get here early to get the best bites.

25. Make a splash at Circus Waterpark

Circus Waterpark

Circus Waterpark is the main contender to Waterbom and is located in Tuban.

It is smaller than Waterbom but tickets are also cheaper, so it makes a good alternative choice.

The park has similar attractions to Waterbom such as slides and a relaxing lazy river, and there is of course a dedicated area for young children making this a great spot for the whole family.

There are also fun areas that include water cannons, fountains, and even a min train that will take you around the park.

The best times to visit Bali based on your travel goals

With awe-inspiring scenery, dense layers of culture, plenty of sun, surf and sand, and balmy temperatures year-round, Bali calls out like a beacon to adventurers, sun-seekers and travelers who like to truly immerse themselves in the countries they visit. Whatever your travel tastes, you'll find rewarding things to see and do in Bali at any time of year.

The dry season, from April to September, is the most enjoyable time of the year for outdoor activities, including basking on beaches, hiking, surfing, sailing, diving and canyoning. Visit during the wet season (November to March), and you'll experience frequent downpours, but there's good surf on the east coast, and you can still enjoy the outdoors, especially in drier areas in the east and north of the island. Temperatures in Bali don’t vary much from season to season, hovering between 28°C and 32°C (82°F to 90°F) year-round, though it's often cooler in mountain areas. Whatever you're looking for in Bali, here are the best times to come.

The high season (July–August and December) is the best time for festivals and partying

The high season in Bali coincides with the traditional summer vacation season in Europe, America, and Australia in July and August. It's the height of the dry season and the peak time for surfing on the west coast at the breaks around Canggu and Seminyak . Bali's original beach hub, Kuta , can be mobbed at this time of year, as many travelers come here specifically for the party season.

Most parts of Bali are inundated with visitors in summer, as tourists come to sample the island’s many delights and enjoy some of its most colorful festivals. Indonesia celebrates its independence from colonial powers on August 17 with plenty of pomp and fanfare. Expect entertaining parades and street parties in the bigger towns.

The period around Christmas and New Year also sees a large influx of travelers seeking a reprieve from cold northern winters. Many hotels, restaurants and other venues organize special dinners and entertainment to mark the festive season. New Year’s Eve is particularly memorable, with spectacular fireworks at midnight to help you rock in the new year in style. Key events to look out for are the Pemuteran Bay Festival, Penglipuran Village Festival and, of course, New Year’s Eve celebrations.

High season means high prices and pressing hordes in tightly-packed tourist areas; for a quieter experience, seek out more remote spots such as Nusa Penida and Pemuteran .

The shoulder season (April–June and September–October) is best for adventurous travelers

The shoulder season in Bali falls at either end of the dry season, when the weather is either improving after the rains or getting slowly wetter after the dry months. Things are quieter without the summertime crowds, and the weather is normally still dry enough for outdoor activities. However, the two-week Easter spring break can get very busy in tourist areas such as Kuta and Legian .

May marks the surfing season in full swing on the west and south coasts, and rafting, trekking and spelunking beckon adventure sports fans.

As rain showers in October are more frequent than in the dry summer months, plan to spend some time indoors visiting temples, museums and cultural institutions in Ubud , Denpasar , and other centers for Balinese culture. Top international events in October include the  Ubud Village Jazz Festival  and the  Ubud Writers and Readers Festival .

The low season (January–March and November) is best for budget travelers

Bali’s low season coincides with the rainiest months of the year, and this can be an unpredictable time for outdoor activities. The crowds have decamped back home, and the island is returning to a more relaxed vibe, but there's still decent surf on the east coast at such legendary locations as Padang Padang, and the weather is still warm. Accommodation prices fall considerably, which is great news for budget travelers.

At the end of January or the start of February, Chinese New Year celebrations feature typical Balinese elements such as traditional percussion bands and dancers dressed as the mythological lion-like creature Barong.

The festival of Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, moves with the lunar calendar but frequently falls in March. This is a culturally fascinating time to visit Bali, but after the colorful parades of ogoh-ogoh puppets the night before the festival, the Day of Silence itself can be a tricky time for visitors as everything closes, transport ceases, and nobody is allowed out on the streets.

Understanding the Balinese calendar

Note that religious festivals such as Galungan and Kuningan are scheduled according to the Balinese 210-day pawukon calendar. This means they happen roughly every seven months, according to the Western calendar. Dates for village festivals are not always set in stone either, and the timing of the Nyepi festival is dictated by the lunar saka calendar, meaning the date changes every year. If you’re planning a trip around a festival or event, check the precise dates before you book your flights.

Map of the best things to do in Kuta

Here is a handy map below, pinpointing the locations of all the best activities and attractions in Kuta

Why visit Kuta?

Bali kuta

First up, Kuta is a great hub for exploring Bali. Due to the airport this is where most people start and end their Bali trip – so almost everyone who goes to Bali at least travels through Kuta. But it is worth staying a few days if you can make the time.

Kuta is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a wide range of restaurants, bars, and shops. Kuta is a perfect destination if you’re looking for a lively and bustling atmosphere with plenty of activities. Alongside all the tourism and chaos, Kuta also has plenty of deep rich culture and local life.

Kuta bali hindu religion

One of the main attractions of Kuta is its beautiful beaches, which are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. The area is home to some of the best waves in Bali, making it a popular destination for surfers from all around the world. Additionally, there are plenty of beachside bars and restaurants, offering a range of local and international cuisine and drinks.

Aside from the beaches, Kuta also has a bustling nightlife scene, with plenty of bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. The area is particularly popular with young travelers who are looking for a lively and fun atmosphere. What’s more, Kuta has a range of shopping options, from street markets to luxury malls, where you can find anything from traditional handicrafts to designer fashion.

How do you get around in Kuta?

Kuta motorbike rental

Walking: Kuta is not a large area – only a few kilometers across. It only takes around 20 – 30 minutes to walk across Kuta. You can also enjoy exploring the markets, back streets and shops as you walk around. You can also walk along the beach.

Taxi: Taxi is a fast, efficient and cheap way to get around in Bali. You can use the Grab taxi app to get taxis in Kuta – and the advantage is that you can get a reasonable price for your taxi. Expect to pay around 20,000IDR – 60,000IDR for taxi rides around Kuta (roughly £1 – £3 or $1.20 – $4)

Bike rental: A fun, fast and convenient way to get around Kuta is bike rental. You can rent motorbikes in Bali for around 100,000IDR – 200,000IDR (roughly £5 – £10 or $6 – $12). Take care the traffic in Kuta can be pretty intense at times. Also watch out for the one way system around town. This can make it tricky to navigate. Also always remember to ride carefully & wear a helmet to stay safe. The roads around here can be crazy!

Car rental: Another way to travel around Kuta is car rental. In all honesty we don’t really recommend car rental if you’re just staying in Kuta. The one way system and traffic mean that car rental is not great just for exploring Kuta. But if you are planning to take a bigger trip around Bali – then you may wish to rent a car, and this can help you travel around in Kuta.

What is the best time of year to visit Kuta?

The backpacking family yoga Bali

Bali is a hot tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. You can expect the temperatures to reach a sweaty 25 – 30 degrees celsius throughout the year. There are two seasons in Bali – the hot dry season and the hot wet season:

Generally, the dry season between May and September is considered the best time to visit Kuta and Bali in general. During the dry season, the weather is generally sunny and dry, making it the perfect time to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities. The surf is also at its best during this time. However, because of the ideal weather conditions, the dry season is also the busiest time of the year, with more tourists and higher prices.

If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, you may want to consider visiting Kuta during the wet season, which runs from October to April. Despite the name, it doesn’t rain all day, every day, but you can expect occasional rain showers. The wet season can be a great time to visit if you don’t mind the occasional rain and want to enjoy a more peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

TOP TIP: Kuta can get busy any time of the year. We recommend booking your accommodation a couple of weeks in advance if possible. You will get a lot more choice if you are able to book early.

What things are available in Kuta?

Convenience store Kuta

Kuta is one of the most developed areas in Bali with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. You can find most things that you are likely to need in Kuta. Here is a feel for the things that are available in the area:

Food: There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores to buy food in Kuta. There is a broad range of international food available in Kuta. Local food is cheap, tasty and readily available. There are also plenty of international chains too.

Drinks: You can buy drinks from convenience stores. This includes bottles of water, soft drinks and also alcoholic drinks. There are also plenty of bars and coffee shops around Kuta.

Kuta markets

Shopping: Kuta is also a great place for shopping. Whether you’re looking for shopping malls, brand names, local markets or clothes made with a local touch Kuta has it all. There is also a supermarket in the basement of Lippo Mall.

Sim cards: There are several small street side shops selling mobile phone accessories and sim cards. This is a great way to pick up a local sim card for your trip. You can then use the Grab taxi app on the go.

ATMs: There are also plenty of ATM machines around Kuta so it’s very easy to get cash out.

What are some of the challenges of staying in Kuta?

Kuta beach bali

We do love Kuta but it does have its own challenges. Here are a few challenges of staying in Kuta:

  • Busiest area of Bali: As the busiest area of Bali Kuta can have its own challenges. For example the better places to stay can get booked up quite early. Book your accommodation early if possible. Also be aware of your belongings – especially in public places like the beach.
  • One way systems: Kuta has some frustrating one way systems around town. These can be quite counter-intuitive and make navigation challenging.
  • Traffic: The popularity of Kuta also means that the traffic can be quite intense and chaotic. Some areas can get very congested meaning you have to wait hours in queues.
  • High prices: Kuta is one of the most touristy areas of Bali (an island that is already a popular tourist destination). This can result in relatively high prices in Kuta – and locals who are less willing to barter.
  • Scams: As far as we can tell there aren’t lots of scams in Kuta. However locals may try to over charge. The worst place is the airport arrivals area. Locals may push hard to sell taxis and even lie about prices and exchange rates to massively over charge you.
  • Less authentic local experiences: As a tourist hub, it can be harder to see the local culture and have authentic local experiences. So if you really want to experience Balinese culture we recommend getting out of Kuta and heading north.

Safety tips for Kuta

Kuta temple and culture

Here are a few safety tips to help you enjoy Kuta and stay safe on your trip:

  • Beware of pickpockets and petty theft. Keep your valuables close to you and avoid carrying large sums of cash.
  • Be careful when crossing the street, as traffic in Bali can be chaotic. Always use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing.
  • Only use official taxis and avoid unlicensed taxis, which may not have proper safety standards. Grab is a great way to get registered taxis in the area.
  • Be cautious when swimming in the ocean, as strong currents and undertows can be dangerous. Always obey warning signs.
  • Drink only bottled water and avoid tap water to prevent getting sick.
  • Be mindful of your alcohol intake and avoid excessive drinking, especially if you plan to swim or drive.
  • As ever, be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone late at night. Stick to well-lit areas and travel with a group if possible.

The BEST things to do in Kuta

1 try a surf lesson.

Surfing in Kuta Bali the backpacking family

If you’re looking for fun and active things to do in Kuta, why not take a surf lesson? Kuta beach is one of the best beaches for surfing in Bali. We loved surfing here. The conditions are generally pretty good for beginners with small waves (normally less than 1m depending on the conditions). Private one to one surf lessons in Kuta are impressively cheap. Lessons cost around 150,000IDR for 1.5 hours (around £8 or $10). You can rent a surfboard for 50,000IDR for an hour (around £3 or $3.50). The best time to surf is late afternoon – things are a little calmer at this time and the sun is less intense. We recommend booking a lesson with an established surf school. To find out more check out 27 Surf School in Kuta .

2 Enjoy a beautiful Bali sunset

Kuta beach sunset

One of our favorite things to do in Kuta is enjoy a stunning beach sunset. Kuta, as a west facing beach, is a great spot to enjoy the vibrant southeast Asian sunsets. There is a great atmosphere on Kuta beach at sunset. Kuta really comes to life in the evening – whether you want to grab a drink, take a swim, or surf at sunset, this area has a lovely vibe. If you’re expecting to have a tranquil paradise sunset beach all to yourself, Kuta isn’t going to do it for you. Kuta beach is very busy and it can actually get crowded at sunset time – but there is a nice atmosphere. For a more tranquil sunset beach we recommend that you consider some of the beaches further north on the west coast of Bali.

3 Go to WaterBom Bali

Waterbom Bali

For an exhilarating family-friendly activity in Kuta, check out the WaterBom Bali waterpark. If you’re really looking for an adrenaline rush check out Smashdown 2.0 with its 26m vertical drop. Another popular slide at WaterBom is the Superbowl, which is a slide that takes you through a swirling bowl before dropping you into a pool below. In addition to the water slides, the park also has a lazy river, wave pool, kids’ area with miniature slides and fountains, and a range of food outlets and souvenir shops. Day passes range in price £20 – £30. You can get WaterBom tickets on klook . Open daily from 9am – 6pm.

4 Have breakfast at the Crumb and Coaster

Bread and crumb cafe Kuta

One of our favorite things to do in Kuta is eat! There is plenty of amazing local and international food here. Don’t miss the awesome Crumb and Coaster cafe in Kuta. This small boutique cafe serves a range of fresh and delicious food and drinks. Their menu includes things like poached eggs, avocado on sourdough toast, pastries and treats like brownies. They also serve amazing coffee. You can probably tell from the description that this cafe is not the cheapest place around. The Crumb and Coaster has a lovely relaxed atmosphere – but it can get busy at times. Even at busy times the service is still efficient and reasonably quick. Prices range between 50,000IDR – 200,000IDR (roughly £3 – £12). Opening hours: 7.30am – 11pm. Address: Jl. Benesari No.2E, Kuta, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

5 Visit the Soft play at Lippo Mall

Lippo mall soft play

If you’re traveling Bali with toddlers or young kids, don’t miss the soft play spaces located on the ground floor and basement floor of Lippo Mall in Kuta. One of the best play spaces at Lippo mall is Play Land. There is a great range of activities. The indoor play spaces are a great thing to do in Bali with kids on a rainy day. The soft play places have a range of activities to engage kids such as ball pits, climbing forts, a small indoor climbing wall and more. The soft play is pretty cheap here: 50,000IDR – 75,000IDR (roughly £3 – £4 or $3.50 – $5), open daily from 10am – 10pm .

6 Try Nasi Champur

Nasi Champur Bali streetfood

Looking for cultural things to do in Kuta? We highly recommend trying some local food. You really can find a very broad range of international foods in Kuta, but don’t miss the amazing tasty local food. Local street food in Kuta is tasty and very affordable. nasi champur means “mixed rice”. Typically you are given a portion of rice and then select curries. Various foods are added such as eggs, veggies, fish and bean curd. This delicious dish is traditionally served in a basket. A portion of nasi champur generally costs around 30,000IDR – 60,000IDR (£1.50 – £3 or $2 or $4). If you’re looking for nasi champur then check out Warung Muslim Podomoro on Jalan Tamansari. The high number of tourists here keeps prices higher. Bartering is acceptable – and necessary to get a fair price. You can find small streetside markets along Jalan Kartika plaza and Jalan Poppies Lane 1.

It is very important to know the  best time to visit Bali  if you want to explore the island under the best conditions. However, keep in mind that you can generally visit Bali at any time of year and not be disappointed.

Even so, if you’re planning your Bali trip and are flexible about the dates, I recommend you try to avoid the rainy season or monsoon in Bali , as it might be difficult to do some excursions and visit some places.

when to travel to Bali rainy season or dry season

In this article, we will delve deeper into  which is the best time to visit Bali,  depending on whether you are looking for green rice fields, diving, surfing, or just having good weather during your trip. In addition, we ‘ll see what the  average temperature of Bali by month is, when the rainy season in Bali is, and what is considered the high season in Bali.

Bali Weather

The  weather in Bali  is the common type of weather found in any tropical climate. Throughout the year, the  average temperature in Bali is  78ºF, reaching its maximum at noon and decreasing slightly during the nights.

In the mountainous areas surrounding the Bali volcanoes, such as, for example, the area of Kintamani, the climate is somewhat colder, with temperatures that can drop to 64ºF. You can download the geographical map of Bali here to see where the mountains are located.

As Bali is very close to the equator, the sunrise and sunset times remain virtually constant throughout the year, with dawn around 6 a.m. and dusk around 6 p.m. Because of this, it ‘s highly recommended that you get used to waking up early if you want to make the most of the daylight hours.

when to travel to Bali to visit Lombok Indonesia

Although there is no summer and winter, at least in comparison to the seasons we experience in Europe or North America, there are two very different periods every year: the rainy season and the dry season. In general,  the best time to visit Bali is during the dry season.

The Monsoon season in Bali

The  monsoon usually passes through Bali from the end of October to April. But if your trip falls during those dates, don’t worry; even with the rain, there are plenty of attractions in Bali.

The Bali monsoon is quite weak compared to the ones in other Southeast Asian countries . That said, although during the Bali rainy season there are frequent rainfalls, strong rainstorms are not common and it will be sunny during the most of the day.

This time is also associated with the highest temperatures in Bali, so try to dress in light and breathable clothes and flip-flops. However, bringing an umbrella or raincoat is unnecessary; you can buy these useful items in Bali for very little money once you’re there.

The dry season in Bali

The dry season in Bali lasts from April to November.  During this period, the rains are almost non-existent and the temperatures are milder. However, you should take special care in the sun, since the skies are usually clear and you can easily get sunburned.

Since it doesn’t rain, there is much less humidity than during the rest of the year and because of this,  it is the best time to visit Bali.  Although it will still be hot, remember to wear a sweater or lightweight jacket for the nights and Bali Tours to the highest and mountainous areas.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Given the above information,  the best time to visit Bali is during the dry season.  However, if, in addition to wanting pleasant weather during your trip, you’re planning to do some specific activities, it might be more convenient for you to visit during the monsoon.

Below, we’ll talk about the best time to visit Bali if you want to see green rice fields, dive, surf, or even visit Ubud.

When is the best time to see Green Rice Terraces in Bali?

The rice paddies are the best of Bali. The best time to see green rice fields in Bali coincides with the end of the rainy season, that is, from January to March. Also, if you want to see them at their best, choose a sunny day.

best time to see rice fields in bali

However, don’t worry if you travel at any other time. You will find green areas in the rice fields in Bali throughout the year, so you won’t be disappointed.

When is the best time to dive in Bali?

Diving and snorkeling are some of the most popular things to do in Bali.

Although you can do it throughout the year, the  best time to dive in Bali  is generally from April to October, right during the dry season. During these months, the visibility is greater, although the water will be at a temperature between 68ºF and 77ºF compared to the warmer 80ºF during the monsoon.

Manta rays can be seen throughout the year, but if you want to see the Mola Mola giant fish, these species prefer colder waters, so July, August, and September would be the best months.

We snorkeled on Gili Trawangan , the largest island of the three that make up the Gili Islands, and the water temperature was great!

When is the best time to surf in Bali?

Although there are surfers catching waves all year round, July is considered the best month to surf in Bali.

best time to visit kuta bali

On the west coast (Kuta & Canggu) the best months are from May to September, while on the East Coast (Sanur), the best time for surfing is from mid-November to early March.

When is the best time to do rafting in Bali?

You can go rafting in Bali throughout the year. If you travel during the monsoon season, you should know that the Ayung River will be full of water, with a possible rafting level IV during this time.

when is low and high season in bali

However, if you travel during Bali’s dry season, the rafting will be level II. Here you can book this  tour with a discount.

When to visit Bali to climb the Batur Volcano?

The trek to the summit of Mt. Batur can be done all year round, although it is best to do it during the dry season to enjoy stunning views.

when is low season in bali best time to visit

If you like adventure and supernatural landscapes you should not miss this tour that includes pick-up from hotels in Bali.

When is Bali’s high season?

There are two periods that are considered  the high season in Bali:  Christmas, when the island is visited mainly by Australians and New Zealanders, and July and August, which is the European summertime.

During these dates, the prices of accommodation in Bali skyrocket and the main places to visit in Bali will be overcrowded.

high tourist season in bali to avoid. when to visit bali

If you have the opportunity to avoid these dates, do it! Tourism in Bali has grown considerably in recent years, so I recommend, if possible, not choosing the high season. For instance, April falls under the dry season; the rice fields will still be green and there will not be as many tourists, so you’ll be able to book some of the best luxury villas in Bali for a very little price.

This has been the most helpful blog on Bali i’ve seen so far. I’m planning a trip end of November to Bali and worried about monsoon season. and the rice paddies. Is it worth going during this time or wait for better time?

' src=

Thanks Sabeen,

My first trip to Bali was at the end of November of 2017 and I had the same concerns as you. I was greatly surprised, we only got one day of rain and there weren’t many people around. For the rice paddies, it’s not the best time since most of them are dry but there are many positive things about traveling during that period, like fewer tourists everywhere!

Enjoy your trip to Bali!

Best Times To Visit Bali

The best time to visit Bali is between April and October, during the dry season, when you can expect warm, sunny days and low humidity. The offseason (from November to March) can be a great time to travel if you want to escape the crowds; downpours are often heavy but short-lived. Thanks to Bali's location close to the equator, in the southern hemisphere, daytime temperatures hover around the low 80s year-round, with only humidity and precipitation patterns changing. The lack of rain during the summer season makes Bali more comfortable for beachgoers.

Kuta Beach Bali with children

Kuta Beach is a 2.5 km long creamy sandy beach located north of Legian and south of Tuban (home to Ngurah Rai International Airport). This beach on the southwest coast of Bali is one of the most popular resorts in Bali. Among foreign visitors it is even more famous than the island itself because of the combination of sun, sand and surf.

Accommodations range from budget guesthouses to 5-star hotels and resorts, as well as thriving bars and multi-story shopping centers. Despite the modern and urbanized look of Jalan Pantai Kuta, the main beach road that runs parallel to the coast, Kuta Beach is still an eye-catcher for Bali’s magical sunsets.

Sunset_in_Kuta

Head to the beach early in the morning to take your place on the sand as surfers constantly watch the ocean waves as the action takes place on the waves. Throughout the day, groups of beach vendors and masseuses vie for your attention, whether it’s a beach sarong or cheap massages, also known as “spa treatments,” on the sand.

During and after sunset, it’s a mixed scene: friendly beach soccer games you can join, impromptu “beach bars” selling cold bintangs and local snacks, conversations with locals, jam sessions with djembe drums, and even dancing with fire.

The centerpiece of Kuta Beach is its aptly named “Halfway” . Here you just have to cross Jalan Pantai to Kuta Beachwalk, a modern shopping, dining and entertainment complex with numerous tenants.

Footpaths on both sides lead to most of Kuta’s other attractions, such as the Hard Rock Café, HQ Beach Club, Kuta Art Market, and the Balavista Lifeguard Tower, adjacent to the Sea Turtle Sanctuary, where many hatchlings are released.

Best time to visit Kuta

kuta travel time

As with most of Bali’s western beaches, the best waves in Kuta are during the dry season (April to August) with easterly winds . Conversely, you must expect debris during the rainy season (October to March) when westerly winds blow and rivers overflow from the highlands and neighboring Java. The entire length of Kuta Beach is cleaned daily by a bright red tractor and garbage truck, as well as vendors and masseuses.

From the middle of the year until October, stronger waves and undercurrents are to be expected, which can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers. While you can swim or paddle on Kuta beach almost every day, always be careful and watch out for the red flags posted by the Balavista team. On the other hand, if you see red and yellow flags, it means you can safely splash around.

Stores and restaurants on Kuta beach

shrimp restaurant kuta

Along Kuta beach, you won’t find any permanent bars right on the sand, but rather small vendors claiming your spots under palm trees with ice boxes full of soft drinks and beer, or roving vendors carrying baskets of tropical fruits and light snacks.

Some also advertise merchandise ranging from colorful beach sarongs and wide-brimmed willow hats, imitations of Oakley, Ray-Ban and Rolex, to unexpected jewelry like bows and arrows.

Across the street, there are many restaurants, from McDonald’s to the eclectic mix of eateries on Kuta Beachwalk . Take a short walk south along the beach path and you’ll reach HQ Beach Club, which serves international cuisine in a cozy setting.

For a variety of local and international dishes (as well as cold beer or fresh coconuts) sold at local prices, walk south to a steady collection of small “warungs.” Just behind these warungs is Kuta’s art market, where you’ll find fixed-price items ranging from paintings to keychains to the usual Bintang T-shirts.

Kuta beach infrastructure

Kuta_Beach

There are public toilets on Halfway, right next to the Kuta Art Market. The toilets at Kuta Beachwalk are available to the public, are modern and in very good condition. Parking is available along Jalan Pantai Kuta Beach, but it is mainly occupied by motorcycles and very limited for cars.

If your hotel is not nearby, the best way to reach Kuta Beach is directly by cab or transfer from your hotel. On the beach there are many rental stores run by locals, from surfboards and bodyboards to deck chairs and umbrellas. If you want to rent a board, they usually offer coaching services as well.

You can always just ask for a board, be it a Racer or a Malibu, and rent it for several hours (the duration is usually flexible or negotiable). Just ask for the best price.

Kuta beach activities

Kuta_Bali_Penang

While surfing and swimming are the main activities at Kuta beach, you can also enjoy everything from beach soccer to volleyball in the morning or at sunset . Non-surfers can learn how to ride the waves at the many surf schools on the beach. There are beginner courses for kids and adults, some of which guarantee you’ll be up on the learning board within the first lesson.

If you’re not too into action, you can just relax on the sand. Just spread out your beach sarong and relax in the sun as you watch the world go by . Or just relax and opt for an affordable spa session on the beach – whether it’s a thorough Balinese massage or a body scrub with a traditional blend of virgin coconut oil and fragrant spices.

Kuta is a unique town, originally a small fishing village. Due to its fantastic long sandy beach and azure waters, it has become famous and popular among tourists. This place has a local flair, affordable hotels and numerous entertainment options located along the coast. Besides, you can do great shopping here.

Kuta is a very noisy and lively town – a great place to relax in a youth group. A truly heavenly place for wave lovers and surfers. But it pays to be on your guard – pickpockets have chosen this city, so you should be very careful on the street.

An added bonus is beautiful sunrises and sunsets that you can watch after a day of entertainment and the amazing beauty of nature.

Best Time to Visit Bali: Month by Month Breakdown

Bali is one of the most popular islands in Southeast Asia, and deciding the best time to visit Bali is going to affect not only the weather you experience but also how many other tourists are there with you.

Like most of tropical Indonesia, Bali only really has two seasons throughout the year, the dry season and the wet season.

All year-round, it’s hot, and for many, Bali can be visited any time of the year, but between November and March, you can expect downpours most days during the wet season.

April to October is the dry season and you can expect larger crowds and higher prices but the weather will be perfect.

Often, the best time to visit Bali is a trade-off between the weather and the number of visitors.

To help you to plan your trip, here’s our guide on the best time to visit Bali.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Indonesia (Country Guide)

Table of Contents

Bali Dry Season

LIna Stock of Divergent Travelers enjoying a beach in Bali

The dry season is the best time to visit Bali when it comes to the weather because for half of the year you can expect beautiful clear skies and almost no rainfall.

The dry season in Bali runs from May to October, although this can vary each year. The peak months are the height of the Balinese winter, which is June, July, and August.

May in Bali

Mount Batur - Best time to visit Bali

May is the start of the official dry season in Bali, but you can still expect a mixed bag when it comes to the weather.

One year it could be raining all through May but the next it can be dry from as early as April.

If it does rain in May though it’s guaranteed to just be a few light showers, and this is the best time to visit before you hit the high season from June to August.

Prices will be lower in May and with the better weather, it’s a good time to start diving and snorkeling, as the water visibility clears up.

It’s getting cooler too and less humid, so a hike to the summit of Bali’s mysterious volcano, Mount Batur, can be a great activity in May, as you’ll miss the crowds and enjoy better conditions for hiking.

June in Bali

Uluwatu Temple Bali

June is the start of the high season in Bali, although it’s not quite as busy a month as July and August. The weather is likely to be perfect with temperatures averaging in the mid-twenties and humidity low.

You’ll have to be really unlucky to see even a light rain shower, so it’s a great time to hit up the beaches and make the most of the clear skies and sunshine.

Prices start to climb in June, but you’ll miss the worst of the high season which picks up towards the end of the month when the European summer holidays begin in earnest.

In June you should visit the more touristy attractions such as the famous temples in the south – Uluwatu for instance – or the increasingly popular Nusa Islands before the summer crowds make their appearance.

July in Bali

Beach in Bali, Indonesia

July is usually the busiest month to visit Bali, but for good reason, and that’s because you’ll be enjoying the best weather of the year.

But as well as enjoying sunny, clear skies and zero rain, you’ll be sharing the beaches and resorts with hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers. People flock here from Europe, America and more than anywhere else, from Australia.

Prices will be higher for flights and hotels, but if you do want to escape the crowds then head north.

This is a great time to experience a side of Bali that most miss, and by exploring the black sand beaches of Amed or the coast and jungle of Bali Barat National Park, you’ll see how the south of Bali was a few decades previously.

August in Bali

LIna Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog enjoying a luxury resort in Bali

Much like July, August is always super busy in Bali. The weather is again beautiful, with clear skies and sunny days, and it’s a great time for lounging on beaches and drinking cold Bintang Beers.

If you want to escape the holiday crowds though then plan a trip north, and visit the beautiful coastline in more rustic destinations such as Lovina or Amed, where tourism has only recently begun to develop.

There are great snorkeling and diving up north too, including some famous shipwrecks, and as it’s the height of the dry season the water will be beautifully clear.

September in Bali

Sunset with surfers in Kuta Bali

September can be the best time to visit Bali if you want a great mix of good weather and smaller crowds.

Things will still be busy and flights will be more expensive than the later shoulder season months. But you’ll save money compared to the true high season and have fewer people around when you explore touristy destinations such as Ubud, Kuta or the Nusa Islands.

October in Bali

Temple in Ubud Bali

October is a great shoulder season month, but the dry weather is coming to a close. There are more and more rainy days, but these can be unpredictable.

If you’re in Bali for two weeks, you’ll most likely have enough dry days to make the most of your visit.

Enjoy the south and the more traditional beach areas, get cultural in Ubud or escape to the north to see a wilder side of the island.

Bali Wet Season

Surfer in Bali

The wet season in Bali runs from November through to April, corresponding with the southern hemisphere summer and fall.

It’s tropical, and that means that while it does rain hard when it rains, showers and storms are brief but fierce.

The rainy season can be a great time to miss the crowds but give December and January a miss because these two months are still incredibly popular despite the wet weather.

November in Bali

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog at a luxury resort in Bali

November is when the rainy season starts in Bali, but just how much rain there will be, can vary.

You’ll have good odds of having lovely sunny days still, and it’s a great time to visit because you’ll miss the Christmas crowds who are just around the corner.

You can get wonderful deals on flights and hotels through November, and you’ll still be able to snorkel and dive before the water gets too cloudy from the rains.

It’s getting hotter, but take a trip to the summit of Mount Batur and you’ll be able to cool down after a challenging hike to the top of Bali’s iconic volcano.

December in Bali

Monkey of Monkey forest in Ubud Bali

December is usually the rainiest month of the year, and weather-wise, this really is not the best time to visit Bali.

The tourist crowds would beg to differ though because while you might get soaked, it’s also incredibly warm still.

That draws over the Christmas crowds seeking winter sun from Europe and North America , and it still brings over the Aussie crowds looking for a cheap getaway.

It’s a lively time to be in Bali, and it’s not a bad place at all to spend Christmas and New Year, but be prepared for high prices and lots of other travelers and tourists.

January in Bali

Boat on a beach in Bali

January can be just as busy as December and unfortunately, just as rainy. This is the height of the wet season, but again, it doesn’t put off the crowds.

If you do visit, then the southern beaches and classic resort areas are best avoided. Head north instead, and find a bit more peace and quiet in the lesser-visited parts of Bali.

February in Bali

Waterfall Bali

In February, the weather starts to cool down slightly and the rainy days begin to disappear, but it’s still very much the wet season.

It’s a great shoulder season month, right after the Christmas crowds go home, and you can enjoy many of Bali’s best sights with fewer people around.

Head to the waterfalls, as they will be in their element, and the jungle will be lush and green from all the rainfall over the last few months.

March in Bali

Shoulder season in Bali - Street with no travelers

March can be a wet month or it can be a dry month, the weather gods in Bali are unpredictable this time of the year.

It will be a quiet month on the tourism front though and that makes it the best time to visit Bali if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel.

The Christmas and New Year crowds are long gone, and the dry season tourists are a few months away.

You can get great deals on flights and resorts if you book in advance, and you’ll find that lots of beach areas in the south such as Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu are quieter.

This is Bali though, so if you’re here for the social aspects then there are always other travelers around to hang out with.

April in Bali

Ubud rice terraces in April

April is a great shoulder month, but be careful of the Easter Holidays in Australia or Europe, as Bali becomes a popular holiday break destination during this time of the year.

You could enjoy almost all sunny days or conversely it could also rain a lot, but that’s the gamble in April as the rainy season draws to a close.

It’s the tail end of the wet season though and Bali will be blooming, making this a great month to visit the waterfalls and the rice paddies before they start to dry out again.

Visit Ubud for cultural festivals and then hike through the rice terraces nearby.

Kuta Beach 3

Kuta Beach in Bali, a prime destination offered by Luxury Indo Travel, boasts the finest waves during the dry season (April–August) with easterly winds. However, be mindful of debris during the monsoon months (October–March), caused by westerly winds and rivers overflowing from the highlands and nearby Java.

The entire stretch of Kuta Beach receives daily cleaning, thanks to a vibrant red tractor and trash-clearing machine, along with the diligent peddlers and masseuses. These local beach hawkers, certified members of Kuta’s beach hawkers association, actively participate in daily cleanup efforts.

From midyear to October, anticipate larger swells and potentially hazardous undercurrents, even for experienced swimmers. While Kuta Beach welcomes swimmers and paddlers almost every day, always heed the red flags posted by the Balawista crew for safety. When you spot red and yellow flags, it’s a signal that the waves are safe to enjoy. Experience Kuta Beach with Bali Business Travel Services from Luxury Indo Travel.

Shopping and dining at Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach 4

At Kuta Beach in Bali, you won’t discover established bars right on the sandy shore. Instead, you’ll encounter small vendors who secure their spots beneath the palm trees. They carry ice boxes filled with refreshing soft drinks and beers, and there are wandering vendors with baskets of tropical fruits and light snacks. Some even offer various goods, such as vibrantly colored beach sarongs, wide-brimmed wicker hats, imitation Oakleys, Ray-Bans, and Rolexes, along with unexpected trinkets like bows and arrows.

You can find a variety of dining options just across the road, ranging from familiar names like McDonald’s to a diverse collection of restaurants at Kuta Beachwalk. If you take a short stroll to the south along the beach footpath, it will lead you to the HQ Beach Club, offering international dishes in a cozy setting. For a wide selection of local and international cuisine, as well as cold beers or fresh coconuts at local prices, continue further south along the footpath to the permanent cluster of small warungs.

Just up the path from these warungs, you’ll come across the Kuta Art Market, which features fixed-priced items but still allows for enjoyable bargaining. Here, you can explore everything from paintings to keychains and the ever-present Bintang singlets. Bali Weather & Seasons

The climate in Bali, Indonesia is tropical , characterized by high temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. Bali is located near the equator (nearly 8 degrees south) and has two distinct seasons: the dry season , which runs from April to October and the wet or rainy season , which runs from November to March.

Weather is an important factor when it comes to planning our holidays, particularly when coming to Bali.

We have gathered on this page all you need to know about the weather and climate:

  • When is the Best Time to travel
  • When is High & Peak Season
  • When is Dry & Rainy Season
  • The Highlands & Mountains
  • Temperature & Rainfall Charts
  • Weather each month in Bali
  • Weather per Area in Bali

When is the best time to visit Bali?

The best time to visit Bali depends mainly on 2 factors,  of course the WEATHER (sunshine, rainfall, temperatures, sea conditions), and secondly, if you can travel during high and low season, which has an impact on prices for accommodation, airfares & flight tickets , and whether Bali is crowded or not.

Tip: Travel during MID-Season – if you can

Mid-Season: For many reasons, the very best time to come to Bali are the months of May , June & September – while April & October are still good. Less crowded, still great weather conditions, and better prices.

Why visiting Bali during mid-season is a smart choice?

It’s just before or after high Season, still dry season, it’s slightly less humid, and room prices and villa rentals can be 30-50% cheaper than during high season. Many shops offer sales and promotions, restaurants are less crowded in those mid-season months, and in general, Bali is a bit more relaxed. October is not too bad either, still much less rain than November (usually – check the rainfall chart).

  • Room prices for these months 30-50% off high season rates
  • Weather is still dry and less humid
  • Not too crowded, everything is more relaxed, traffic not too crazy in the tourist areas
  • Sea conditions excellent
  • Airfares still reasonable
  • Sales & Promotions in Shops & Restaurants

When is High / Peak Season in Bali?

These are Bali’s busiest times:

  • July and August
  • Christmas & New Year (Busiest)
  • Chinese New Year
  • End of Ramadan (Idul Fitri)

Some visitors love it when it’s busy, when the streets are buzzing and could not imagine a holiday otherwise. If you like it quiet and more serene, then Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu during high season might not be your first and best choice.

Still, even during high season, there are plenty of destinations in Bali, that are quiet and away from the masses.

When is Dry and Rainy Season in Bali

Dry season in bali, april to october, less rain – cooler breezes.

What is dry season in Bali like? During the dry season, temperatures typically range between 80-90°F (27-32°C) and humidity is relatively low, while there is often a nice and cool breeze which is very pleasant. This is the most popular time for tourists to visit Bali, as the weather is sunny and dry with little chance of rain. Temperatures are pretty steady all year round but during dry season, the evenings can be pleasantly fresh with a cool breeze.

During Bali’s dry season, beaches are generally clean, and Bali shows its pretty side. One can still expect occasional rainfall. If you have a choice, then yes, better to avoid the traditionally rainy months to minimize the risk of bad weather and come to Bali during dry season.

It is in general the warmest time of the year, but the lower humidity makes it more comfortable than the rainy season. The skies are usually clear and sunny, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as swimming, sunbathing, water sports, trekking, and beach parties.

Rainy Season in Bali

November to march, more rain, hotter, much more quiet.

What is rainy season in Bali like? During the rainy season, Bali experiences more rainfall and higher humidity than during the dry season. The temperatures during this time of the year are still warm, typically ranging from 75-85°F (24-29°C). The island receives most of its annual rainfall during this time, and it can be quite heavy at times, but usually, it does not rain all day, usually, there are short spells of rain that might last a couple of hours in the afternoon and during nights.

It’s still possible to enjoy many outdoor activities during this time of the year. The island’s lush tropical landscape is especially beautiful during the rainy season, with the vibrant green rice terraces and the jungle covered in mist. However, during rainy season Bali the beaches and sea in the south of Bali (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu) can be quite dirty due to debris and trash washed onto the shore – during December, January and February particularly. That’s not a pretty sight!

Different areas in Bali - Different Climates

Central bali, volcanos and the mountains.

Bali’s central mountain area is typically cooler and get more rain than the lower coastal areas. Especially at night, temperatures can drop significantly in the highlands near the volcanoes.

The popular regions of UBUD, SIDEMEN and BATUKARU are situated at an altitude of around 600-900 meters (1,970-2,950 feet) above sea level. This altitude results in a cooler and more comfortable climate than the coastal areas of Bali, which can be quite hot and humid. The temperature in Ubud for example is typically around 75-85°F (24-29°C) throughout the year, which is cooler than the coast (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Denpasar, Sanur, Bukit Peninsula, Pecatu, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua etc).

All of the volcanoes in Bali and Lombok are considered sacred by the local people, and they are often the sites of religious ceremonies and offerings. They are also popular tourist destinations and offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes. Visitors should be aware that all of these volcanoes are active and that there may be restrictions on access during times of increased volcanic activity.

The Nusa Islands & Bukit

Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Penida and the most souther tip of Bali, Bikut (Nusa Dua, Pecatu, Ungasan, Uluwatu) are significantly dryer and sometimes therefore hotter than Bali’s main island. The land is less fertile and the areas can struggle with fresh water supply during the dry season months.

Ubud vs Kuta in Bali – Which is Best in 2024?

Ubud vs Kuta? Which is best for a holiday in Bali? If you’re trying to decide whether to stay in Ubud or Kuta then this article is for you. Both are popular destinations but they offer a very different experience.

Kuta is the best-known destination in Bali. Famous for sun and surf, Kuta Beach is a long stretch of sand that extends for miles and includes several beaches including Legian Beach and Seminyak Beach.

Kuta is a traditional beach holiday destination in Bali and has been drawing visitors for decades, If you enjoy swimming and surfing, beach sunsets and lively nightlife then Kuta could be for you. Ubud , on the other hand, is the cultural heart of Bali and offers a completely different experience. If you enjoy temples, museums, beautiful scenery, yoga and luxury spas then head to Ubud.

I’ve been to Bali as a solo traveller several times and I’ve spent time in both Ubud and Kuta. I tend to stay in Kuta when I need to be near the airport. I’ll enjoy a beach sunset and some shopping and then move on to Ubud to enjoy Balinese culture, temples, rice fields and waterfalls.

Whether you choose to stay in Kuta or Ubud really depends on your personal preferences and what kind of holiday you’re looking for. This article looks at the similarities and differences between these two famous Bali destinations to help you decide which is better Ubud or Kuta. You might even decide to spend some time in both.

Kuta vs Ubud: Location

Where is Kuta in Bali? Kuta Beach is on Bali’s west coast and is conveniently located around 5 kilometres from Denpasar International Airport. Without traffic, the taxi ride from the airport to Kuta takes around 15 minutes.

Where is Ubud in Bali? Ubud is located 37 kilometres inland from the Airport and the trip takes around 1.5 hours by taxi. You can expect to find heavy traffic along the way, and this can slow the journey so allow plenty of time for travelling.

So, which has a better location, Kuta or Ubud? Kuta is easy to get to from the airport and has a great location on the beach, but Ubud is a good base for exploring the rest of Bali and is surrounded by serene green landscapes.

Winner: Kuta

Ubud vs Kuta for Culture & Authenticity

What is Kuta like? Kuta is a resort town in Bali Indonesia with a long stretch of sand and surf, dramatic beach sunsets and an energetic party and nightclub scene. Kuta offers a Westernised version of Bali with all the services tourists need.

There are cheap touristy markets and a selection of shopping malls where you can browse for designer labels in air-conditioned comfort and eat at restaurants that cater to Western tastes and charge Western prices. Unfortunately, the town has been overdeveloped for tourism and the local culture is hard to find.

What is Ubud like? Ubud, on the other hand, is a centre for Balinese art and culture. With a Royal Palace, temples, museums and local markets, Ubud offers the authentic Balinese cultural experience that Kuta lacks.

Winner: Ubud

Kuta vs Ubud for Safety

Is Ubud safe? Ubud has a friendly feel and is safe enough to visit. The locals are warm and welcoming and there’s a low crime rate in Ubud. But you may come across petty theft and scams so it’s best to always be on your guard and take care of your belongings when you’re there.

Is Kuta safe? Kuta is one of the least safe places in Bali. With its nightclub strip, Kuta has a seedy side, especially late at night. It was also the place of the Bali terrorist Bombings in 2002.

While Bali is generally a comparatively safe place to visit, nowhere is completely safe and Kuta is the place you’re most likely to be scammed or robbed in Bali. So, if you’re out alone at night take good care of yourself.

Kuta or Ubud for Nightlife

Kuta is famous for its nightclubs and is known as a party town where you can dance the night away and sleep on the beach through the day. Kuta is a popular spot with the young crowd who like to party at clubs like the Engine Room, LXXY or Bounty Discoteque to name a few.

In comparison, Ubud has a more relaxed vibe with a much quieter nightlife without the pubs and clubs of Kuta.  Ubud is known for its restaurants and has a lively café scene.  You can go out for a meal and a quiet drink or perhaps listen to some jazz at the Laughing Buddha Bar , but the energetic nightspots are in other parts of the island like Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu.

Ubud or Kuta for Activities

There’s a wide range of activities available in either Ubud or Kuta, but each place offers different things. The activities in Kuta are centred around the beach, shopping, and nightclubs while in Ubud, you’ll spend your time enjoying the traditional Balinese culture and the stunning landscapes that surround the town.

Whether you choose Kuta or Ubud, there is a wide selection of enjoyable activities available for your Bali vacation.

Ubud vs Kuta: When to go

Anytime is a good time to go to Bali but the dry season is the most popular time to visit. There’s less rain from April to October with July, August and December the most popular and busiest months to go to either Kuta or Ubud.

Travel to Bali in June , July or August for a beach holiday in Kuta with warm sunny weather and less rain. It’s a good time for sightseeing and for swimming and relaxing on the sand.

For cheaper prices, visit Bali in January or February. Accommodation and airfares are less expensive during the low season and there’s still plenty of sunshine to enjoy. But the weather tends to be stormy in the afternoons throughout the rainy season from November to March.

The storm clouds of the wet season create dramatic skies and stunning beach sunsets in Kuta, but Ubud is the best year-round destination.

So, which is better Ubud or Kuta? You can visit either Kuta or Ubud in the dry months and have a great experience, but if you visit Bali in the wet season, your beach holiday may be rained out. In wet weather, you can always head to Ubud where there are plenty of galleries, museums and temples to see on a rainy day. In the competition between Ubud vs Kuta, Ubud is the best year-round destination.

Winner:  Ubud

TIP: If you’re looking for the best weather for a holiday in Bali’s wet season (November to March), why not visit Thailand instead? Learn more about  Bali vs Thailand , how these popular Southeast Asian destinations compare and whether Railay Beach or Ao Nang is better for a beach holiday in Thailand.

Kuta vs Ubud: Accommodation

Choose either Kuta or Ubud and you’ll find a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets.

Kuta is popular with the younger backpacker crowd and offers a good selection of budget hostels. There are also plenty of mid-range hotels and luxury beach resorts that are popular with couples and families.

Kuta is the place to look for accommodation deals, especially during the low season. More recently, visitors have preferred to stay in trendy Canggu or Seminyak and Kuta has been slow to recover from the Covid-19 slump. Some of the larger 4 and 5-star hotels and resorts are offering reduced prices, especially in Bali’s low season in January and February.

Ubud vs Kuta. Sunset at the beach in Bali

Ubud also has a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. There are hostels and cheaper homestays that cater for backpackers, and budget travellers and a wide selection of mid-range hotels well located in town.

Ubud also offers luxury villas overlooking rice fields on the outskirts of town. You can rent a private villa near Ubud and be surrounded by beautiful Balinese landscapes, lush green rice terraces or jungle.

The best places to stay in Ubud are near the main streets, Jalan Raya or Monkey Forest Road where there’s a good selection of cafes and restaurants a short walk away. But if you’re staying a bit out of town, there are plenty of Grab and Gojek rides available to take you wherever you want to go.

While iconic Kuta Beach is good for a beach holiday it isn’t an especially beautiful place. Kuta is overdeveloped and touristy and it can be very busy in the high season.

But you can choose either Kuta or Ubud and find a good choice of places to stay.

Winner: Ubud for scenery / Kuta for hotel deals

Where to stay in Kuta

Budget: The Interconnection Hostel is clean and well-located amidst the hustle and bustle of Kuta. Just a short walk to the beach or the mall, this hostel has a pool and gets exceptional reviews.

Mid-Range:     Grandmas Plus Airport Hotel  in Kuta is a safe, clean and friendly place to stay near the airport. I’ve stayed here a couple of times when I arrived late at night or had an early morning flight and there’s a pool and a restaurant on site.

Luxury: Alaya Dedaun Kuta is a 5-star luxury villa in the heart of Kuta with a superb location near the beach, shops and pubs.

Cleasing ritual in the holy spring water at Tirta Empul Temple Bali

Where to stay in Ubud

Budget – Lower Mid-Range:  Yarama Cottages   provides clean ,  basic accommodation in a central location near the Monkey Forest and next door to the  Yoga Barn.  I’ve enjoyed staying here a couple of times as this guesthouse is good value and has everything I need to be safe and comfortable as a solo traveller in Bali.

Mid-Range:  Samas Cottages  has a great location near the royal place. It’s a more upmarket area and very central to the main attractions in Ubud. The bungalows at Sama’s Cottages are nicely appointed with comfortable, luxurious bathrooms, and there’s a lovely pool, a beautiful tropical garden and good service. I enjoyed my stay here and can recommend it.

Luxury: Kayon Jungle Resort is a comfortable resort outside Ubud near the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Surrounded by nature this 5-star resort gets exceptional reviews and is the perfect base to relax, soak in the beautiful Balinese landscapes and explore the island.

Final Thoughts: Which is better Ubud or Kuta?

You can choose either Kuta or Ubud and have a very different kind of vacation. If you’re looking for surfing or a beach holiday, with a party atmosphere or you want to be near the airport then Kuta is the place for you.

And if relaxing landscapes, lush green rice fields, ancient temples, yoga and luxurious spas are more your thing, then you’ll enjoy Ubud more.

Personally, I find Kuta very touristy and westernised but it’s conveniently close to the airport and the beach sunsets are lovely.

Ubud is also very busy and the traffic is awful, but I enjoy the culture, the café scene, the yoga classes and the beautiful scenery. So, I find myself returning to Ubud time and again. It’s a good central base to explore the rest of Bali.

Whether Ubud or Kuta is better is really a personal preference and spending some time in both places will provide variety and interest to your Bali vacation. You might also consider staying in Sanur or Jimbaran to be near the airport or Nusa Dua, Seminyak or Canggu for beach alternatives to Kuta.

Visiting the Monkey Forest is fun addition to a 3 days in Ubud itinerary

How far is Kuta to Ubud?

Kuta to Ubud is around 34 kilometres by road and takes approximately 1.5 hours by taxi using the Ngurah Rai Bypass. Traffic delays are common so allow plenty of time to travel between Kuta and Ubud.

Is Ubud the best place to stay in Bali?

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali and the best place to stay for Balinese art, dance, music, architecture and culture. Head to Ubud to visit Bali’s beautiful water temples, rice terraces and waterfalls. Ubud has a central location for easy access to other destinations across the island.

Is Kuta or Seminyak better?

While Kuta is the traditional surf beach holiday destination in Bali, Seminyak is a beach suburb next to Kuta and a bit more upmarket. Seminyak offers trendy beach clubs, coffee shops, a shopping mall, designer boutiques and a more expensive nightclub scene. Kuta attracts a younger crowd and backpackers love Kuta’s cheaper accommodation and energetic pubs and discos.

Which is better Ubud or Seminyak?

Ubud and Seminyak offer a different experience in Bali, so which is better is really a matter of preference. Seminyak is an upmarket destination for a beach holiday in Bali while Ubud is an inland town and a centre for Balinese art and culture.

As well as a long golden surf beach, Seminyak offers a busy nightlife with beach clubs, trendy cafes and shopping malls. A highlight of Seminyak is watching glorious Bali beach sunsets with a cocktail in your hand.

Ubud has a royal palace, beautiful temples, rice terraces and waterfalls. It’s a great place to discover traditional Balinese architecture, music and dance and the perfect base to explore the rest of the island.

THE 12 BEST BEACHES IN BALI in 2024 (+ SURFING GUIDE)

Wondering where to find the best beaches in Bali?

Bali is renowned for its year-round weather and some of the world’s most stunning tropical beaches. People come to Bali for all sorts of reasons, and there are a lot of incredible places to see on the island , from mountains to volcanoes, waterfalls, ancient temples, and rice fields.

But no one comes to Bali without planning to spend a day or two at the beach!

Every beach in Bali is different and caters to a different kind of traveler. Some are great for adventurous travelers, some for expert surfers, some for actually learning HOW to surf, and others for swimming and sunbathing.

This guide shares exactly which Bali beach is best suited for different interests and types of travelers. This way, you can choose the one that’s right for you and immediately add it to your Bali itinerary!

Let’s begin!

The 12 Best Beaches Of Bali

This list is not ranked; instead, it presents beaches from the southern tip to the island’s northern side, each unique unto itself. They are one of the main reasons Bali is still worth visiting and continues to create life-long memories for thousands of visitors daily.

1. Suluban Beach – Best For Adventure

Suluban Beach, tucked into the cliffs of Uluwatu, is one of the island’s most unique and adventurous beaches.

Its small, secluded nature and surrounding cliffs offer a picturesque setting for photographers, and visitors can actually explore under the cliffs and find a path to Uluwatu Beach.

Despite being marketed as a hidden gem, it’s not-so-secret anymore, and during high season, hundreds of tourists hike down the staircase to check it out.

Once you’re finished exploring, one of the best things to do in Uluwatu is watch the surfers from Single Fin’s Bar . The bar has lots of space to relax and even an infinity pool overlooking the ocean. The menu is quite expensive, but if you buy a drink, you’ll have full access to the pool and the views!

Just remember that it’s important to note that you’ll have to wait for low tide if you want access to the beach!

Surfing at Sulaban Beach: You should surf during high tide. However, the surf here is pretty intense, so unless you’re experienced, leave it to the pros.

Tip: If you have limited time in Bali, pick 2-3 beaches from this list or take a convenient day tour like this one. It hits top white sand beaches where you can relax and swim, then ends with sunset at stunning Uluwatu Temple. Having a private driver and guide maximizes your time so you can experience the best beaches and sunset views in a single day.

2. Padang Padang – Best For Sunset

Padang Padang’s claim to fame is the “Bali Pipeline,” a perfect tube for advanced surfers.

Although not experts in surfing, people still visit this beach for one of the best sunsets in Bali.

The cliffs are magnificent, towering on either side of the beach, and during low tide, you can walk super far out into the ocean (over 100 meters) before the water reaches your knees. But Pack some water shoes because the ocean floor is really rocky.

The downside of Padang Padang is that it was smaller than we expected, so there weren’t beach chairs for rent, and it was kind of difficult to escape the crowds.

The entrance fee is just 15K IDR ($1), and then it’s a short, steep walk past a few monkeys to get to the shoreline.

Surfing at Padang Padang Beach: Surf at high tide. The waves are primarily for experts, but you can find smaller waves to the right-hand side of the break.

3. Thomas Beach – Best For Peace And Quiet

Visitors arriving at Thomas Beach, especially in the morning, often find it exceptionally peaceful, with calm waters and few other people around, even during peak season. The beach is less maintained than most beaches in Bali, but local beachfront vendors and warung owners are quick to tidy up.

This is a lesser-known beach in Bali and a favorite for a quiet morning or afternoon in the sun.

Travelers can access the beach parking lot via a small road just across from Suku Espresso . There is a sign advertising it as a way to Padang Padang Beach, but this is actually the path to the parking lot for Thomas Beach.

Surfing at Thomas Beach: Surf at high tide. Beginner waves but very limited surf rentals on the beach.

4. Bingin’ Beach – Best For Boho Bali Vibes

Bingin’ Beach stands out further up the southern shore with its secluded boho vibes and beachfront cafes.

It’s excellent for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing, and while the beach may be small, the quick-deepening water allows people to swim and snorkel near the reef right offshore! That’s really what sets it apart from most of the beaches in Bali.

This is a well-known beach, but it’s less crowded due to a 10-minute hike down to the beach and over 200 steps!

As you get closer to the shore, you’ll notice various restaurants nearby, offering a perfect spot for a post-beach smoothie or lunch with an ocean view.

Surfing at Bingin’ Beach: Surfing here is best at high tide and is more suited for intermediate to advanced surfers.

ANOTHER FAVORITE: UNIQUE THINGS TO DO IN BALI

5. Dreamland Beach – Best For Swimming & Learning To Surf

Dreamland is yet another beautiful shore in the Uluwatu region! The sunset is stunning, and many shops and restaurants are lining the beach!

It is one of the best beaches in Bali for learning how to surf, with a mellow break, uncrowded waves, and a soft, sandy bottom.

There are a few surf schools and rental shops near the beach.

If you want to swim at Dreamland Beach, you should do your best to visit during high tide. This means the waves will be super mellow, so you can swim and snorkel without watching out for surfers.

Another popular place to visit near Dreamland Beach is Klapa Beach Club , which has an infinity pool and a full restaurant overlooking the coast.

Surfing at Dreamland Beach: Low tide is ideal for surfing and the perfect beach for beginners!

6. Balangan Beach – Best For Sunbathing

Balangan Beach stands out as one of the longest beaches in the Uluwatu area, offering plenty of space to relax and sunbathe. Beach chairs are available for rent at just $1 an hour, and surfboards for roughly $2/hour.

This beach is also a popular spot for photography, thanks to its stunning lookout point.

To reach the overlook, drive down Jl. Pantai Balangan until you arrive at Tanjung Balangan , where you’ll find a breathtaking cliff overlooking the beach.

Surfing at Balangan Beach: Balangan is ideal for intermediate surfers, and you can only surf during high tide. However, surfers should be cautious of the shallow reef break.

7. Nusa Dua Beach – Best For Water Sports

Nusa Dua’s well-maintained and family-friendly environment, combined with the array of watersports and leisure activities available, makes it one of the top beaches in Bali for those seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation.

It’s one of the best beaches in Bali for families with small children since many more family-friendly activities and tons of water sports are available.

The beach is part of the well-developed Nusa Dua area, known for its luxurious resorts, golf courses, and upscale atmosphere. You’ll also notice that many of the more traditional resorts and hotels in Bali are in this area.

Heading a few kilometers north, you’ll run into Tanjung Benoa Bay, which is the mecca of watersports in Bali, thanks to a vibrant coral reef and calm water.

Some watersports in Nusa Dua include jet skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides, along with underwater opportunities like snorkeling, underwater scooters, sea walks, and scuba diving.

Surfing at Nusa Dua: No Surfing

8. Blue Lagoon Beach – Best For Snorkeling

Next to Padang Bai Beach is a small cove called “Blue Lagoon Beach,” which is significantly less crowded and a fantastic place to go snorkeling, sunbathe on the shore, or hang out in a local warung.

The beach is reachable by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver from Ubud. It takes about one hour to reach Padang Bai, and from there, you just continue past the ferries for about 5 minutes and follow the signs for Blue Lagoon.

The lagoon has clear blue water, perfect for snorkeling gear right on the beach for about 50k IDR ($3). As an East Coast beach, it has the same calm water as Nusa Dua, so you won’t have to worry about surfers here.

Pro Tip: There are also fun snorkeling tours at Blue Lagoon that will take you to other popular snorkel spots nearby.

Also, right on the beach is a local cafe with some of the best Yellow Curry on the island. It’s called “Warung Blue Lagoon.”

Surfing at Nusa Dua: No Surfing

9. Kuta Beach – Best For Nightlife

Kuta Beach, the party capital of Bali, stretches from the airport northwards, transitioning into Legian, Seminyak, Berawa, and eventually Batu Bolong. While the area is quite touristy, the beach is wide and has small, soft waves that are excellent for beginner surfers.

The area caters to all budgets and travel styles, offering a mix of hostels, luxury resorts, local warungs, fine dining, market stalls, and trendy boho shops.

It’s definitely the most touristy area of Bali, but if that’s what you like, you’ll enjoy Kuta.

Surfing at Kuta Beach: Surf at high tide, and the waves are wonderful for beginners

10. Seminyak Beach – Best For Families

Seminyak Beach, a short drive north of Kuta, is considered the best beach in Bali for families and long-term travelers.

It offers a pleasant balance in Bali with a central location, sprawling restaurant scene, and various accommodation options ranging from budget to luxury.

The waters are calm, and the beach provides ample space for relaxation, striking a nice balance between the busier Kuta and the more laid-back Canggu.

Surfing at Seminyak Beach: The waves are very mellow here, so it’s great for beginners, and you should do your best to surf at high tide.

11. Batu Bolong Beach or Canggu Beach – Best For Surfing & Great Food

Also known as “Old Man’s Break,”  Batu Bolong Beach is THE best beach in Bali for aspiring (and intermediate) surfers.

Tip: There are so many places to rent boards and even surf lessons available for less than 500K IDR ($30). A surfboard alone costs 50K IDR ($3) for 2 hours.

If surfing is not your thing, Batu Bolong is also one of the best beaches in Bali to chill out. The beach is huge, with plenty of beach chairs and space to lay out on a sarong!

As the most popular beach in Canggu, there are also various beach bars, cafes, and restaurants lining the beach–all serving decently priced dishes with a view of the beach.

Although Batu Bolong may be the most popular beach in Canggu, it’s not the only one. Head north to Echo Beach or south to Berawa Beach.

These beaches tend to have fewer crowds but the same soft sand, beach chairs, and beautiful sunsets.

12. Kelingking Beach – Best For Dramatic Views

Kelingking Beach is for sure the most awe-inspiring beach in Bali, but it’s actually not on the mainland. You’ll have to take a fast boat to Nusa Penida if you want to check out this beach.

But it’s worth it!

The view from the top will blow you away, and for more adventure, you can take a daunting hike straight down the cliff to the beach!

It takes about one hour each way and will leave you exhausted, but it is one of the most thrilling experiences in Bali.

Just remember to bring sturdy shoes and bring water with you because there are no facilities at the beach.

Also, you should go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the tour groups. Later in the day, you’ll be forced to wait in line for photos and maneuver around other hikers while descending to the beach.

Surfing at Kelingking Beach – No, you cannot surf at Kelingking Beach.

Final Thoughts: Best Beaches in Bali

In a perfect world, you would have time to visit all of them, but if you only have a limited time, the absolute best beaches in Bali are;

  • Blue Lagoon Beach for Snorkeling
  • Batu Bolong Beach for Surfing
  • Padang Padang Beach for Sunset and Coastal View

Or as mentioned above, you could take a day tour that takes you to the best beaches and at the end to watch the sunset.

Hopefully, this helps you plan a fantastic trip to Bali and determine which beaches are worth adding to your itinerary!
