Katie Hammel

Music has the power to transport us, change our moods, and conjure memories. And, for many travelers, music is closely linked to travel. It can helps us understand the people and culture of a place, break down language barriers, and sear certain moments into our memories forever.

With help from members of our Travel Community and Going staff, we've created the ultimate travel playlist of 100 travel songs. Some reference specific places, others showcase the musical talent of a specific country, and others simply celebrate the joy of exploration.

Here, in no particular order, are 100 of our favorite travel songs.

56 songs that reference specific places in the title or lyrics

Sure, some of these songs, such Paris by the Chainsmokers or Toto’s Africa , actually have little to do with the specific place; it’s just used as the title or the setting for the story. But others not only reference a country or city, they also evoke a specific sense of that particular place or tell a story about that destination.

For example, in Marrakech Express , Crosby, Stills & Nash recount scenes from a train ride Nash actually took in 1966. In London Calling , the Clash sing about the social issues facing London in the late 70s. In Walking in Memphis , Marc Cohn croons about his experience wandering the city. And Simon & Garfunkel's America was inspired by a road trip that Paul Simon took with his girlfriend.

Here are some of our favorite songs that mention a specific city or country, and a snippet of the lyrics.

A song’s title or lyrics don’t need to explicitly mention a specific place; sometimes it's the artist, the melody, the language, or simply the emotion of the song that ties it in our memories to a place we love.

Whether it’s the sultry sounds of Gotan Project’s Amor Porteno taking us back to a tango club in Buenos Aires, or the ethereal sounds of Hoppípolla from Sigur Rós transporting us to the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland, these international songs make us think of the places they are from or written about.

Listen when:  you're on your cheap flight to Iceland, or packing for your trip to Seoul, or strolling the streets of Paris, or driving the backroads of Scotland, or...

Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt

Some people claim that there's a woman to blame

The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist According to Travelers, Editors, and Spotify

This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. As we wrap up the year, international travel is still a no go, and flying in general seems like a bit of a risky proposition. As a result, the humble road trip has roared back on our collective radar as many of us have been taking to the road as a way to get out of the house and explore our surroundings near and far.

When we began discussing road trips on zoom calls and in Slack channels, the one thing that everyone could agree on was that music was essential. A good soundtrack can mean the difference between the hours flying by as fast as the scenery out the window or turning around before you reach your destination.

So what makes a great road trip playlist? It starts with the songs, but with so many incredible choices out there, it’s hard to whittle down to something that stands up to the test of time. However, we had an idea.

To make the perfect road trip playlist, we used three components. First, we looked at Spotify data to identify the most popular songs for driving, according to the top 100 road trip playlists. Next, we surveyed our TripSavvy readers to get their take. After that, our editors weighed in on their favorite songs. In the end, we were left with 29 carefully curated high-vibe songs that create the ultimate travel music of 2020.

Here are the top road trip songs. For the best listening experience, try playing them in order. Enjoy!

"Wake Me Up" by Avicii

Released in 2013, “Wake Me Up” made history by becoming the first song on Spotify to accumulate 200 million streams. This song can instantly put you in a good mood and that's why it's up first on our list.

"Night Moves" by Bob Seger

"Night Moves" is an easy-listening, American Rock classic. "Rolling Stone" magazine named it Single of the Year in 1977. This song is sure to get you in the right headspace for hitting the highway.

"Fly Like an Eagle" by Steve Miller Band

As suggested by one of our readers, "Fly Like an Eagle" was a must-have for this playlist. Even though this psychedelic-rock tune was released in 1976, it still feels relevant today.

Feed the babies Who don't have enough to eat Shoe the children With no shoes on their feet House the people Livin' in the street Oh, oh, there's a solution

"I Feel It Coming" by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk

As suggested by one of our readers, "I Feel It Coming" is a sensual disco-pop song by The Weeknd and Daft Punk. When you play it, this catchy song will make you instinctively bob along as you're on the road.

"Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line

A song that appears on the Spotify list and was submitted by a reader is "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line. This upbeat country song will make you wanna roll the windows down and cruise.

"Take It Easy" by the Eagles

After hours of driving, "Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy," might be the best advice you'll get. Released in 1972, "Take It Easy" by the Eagles is still being played by road trippers, appearing 20 times across the top 100 playlists.

"Riptide" by Vance Joy

"Riptide," the 2013 single by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy, appears on 13 of the top 100 road trip Spotify playlists. This cheery folk song won the World Music Award for World’s Best Song.

"Old Town Road (Remix)" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

In 2019 Lil Nas X released "Old Town Road," a country rap remix with Billy Ray Cyrus. It won lots of awards, so it's no wonder that this was a top contender.

"Malibu" by Miley Cyrus

"This song reminds me of a road trip down the west coast from San Francisco to San Diego," says Megan Hartig, Content Marketing Manager. We booked our hotels on the fly with the app Hotel Tonight which was great for spontaneous travel."

"Life in the Fast Lane" by Eagles

You can't listen to "Life in the Fast Lane" without feeling like a badass. This song was on 13 of the top road trip playlists on Spotify. But don't lose your cool as this lyric points out: Life in the fast lane, Surely makes you lose your mind.

Listening to this song can give you a lead foot. Don't get a speeding ticket!

"Hey, Soul Sister" by Train

If you've never sung "Hey, Soul Sister" at the top of your lungs, have you ever been on a road trip? Not according to Spotify listeners. This song appeared 16 times according to Spotify data.

"September" by Earth, Wind & Fire

"I grew up listening to a lot of Earth, Wind & Fire with my parents during road trips," says associate editor Sherri Gardner. "'September' was one of my family’s favorites because it’s fun to sing along to, especially with the windows down."

"Burn The House Down" by AJR

Another great suggestion by one of our readers, "Burn The House Down" written by the pop trio consisting of three brothers, began as a 2018 song about U.S. political climate and became the theme song for the March for Our Lives campaign.

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas

If you're struggling to hang in during your long drive, turn up "Carry On Wayward Son" a little louder for some encouragement. This progressive rock song performed by Kansas in 1976 took the band to the next level.

"Dancing In The Moonlight" by Jubël featuring NEIMY

"Dancing In The Moonlight" was named nine times in the top 100 Spotify road trip playlists. This 2018 feel-good pop cover is sure to lift your spirits with its upbeat rhythm, especially if you are driving after the sun goes down.

"Road Trip (2020 Version)" by Convent Bonfires

This song was suggested by one of our readers, and given the title, we had to include it. This obscure, indie-rock track released this year gives us all the good vibes.

"Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey

With almost one billion streams on Spotify, it's no surprise "Don't Stop Believin'" cracks the top 3, with 24 appearances on Spotify's top road trip playlists. So next time you're in your car, turn up the volume and sing on and on and on and on.

"Circles" by Post Malone

Another song listed on the Spotify charts and our reader survey is "Circles" by Post Malone. This 2019 pop single won Song of the Year at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. It sat for a record 39 weeks in the Hot 100's top 10.

"Feel This Good" by Jackopierce

Another reader's choice, "Feel This Good" by musical duo Jackopierce is an easy listening song for the freeway.

Woke up this morning, rolled out of bed My favorite song's playing inside my head I go out on the freeway, windows down Don't know where I'm going, but it's good to move around and Days like this should never end

"Big Yellow Taxi" by Lennon & Maisy

Canadian sisters, Lennon and Maisy Stella, do a beautiful cover of the classic song "Big Yellow Taxi" originally sung by Joni Mitchell.

"Shotgun (The Wild Remix)" by George Ezra & The Wild

Whoever gets to ride shotgun is sure to enjoy this 2018 song by George Ezra featuring The Wild. "Shotgun" was listed on both the Spotify and readers' choice lists.

"Layla" by Eric Clapton

The acoustic rock song "Layla" was suggested by readers and found on six of the top Spotify road trip playlists. Hailed as one of the most iconic classic rock ballads of all time, there is no surprise it belongs here.

"Higher Love" by Kygo & Whitney Houston

This version of "Higher Love" produced by Norwegian DJ Kygo and the late Whitney Houston is a tropical, high-energy song that was number two on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

"Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty

"I grew up listening to Tom Petty (he was my first concert), and he's still one of my all-time favorite musicians," says senior editor Jamie Hergenrader. "Free Fallin' is worthy of a road trip playlist because it embodies the vibe of the trip—you're out on the open road, free to explore, and the lyrics even mention or hint at several classic L.A. routes, such as Ventura Boulevard, Highway 101, and Mulholland Drive."

"More Than a Feeling" by Boston

Is there a song that reminds you of your secret crush? Apparently someone in the band Boston had one, and that inspired their hit song "More Than a Feeling." Spotify users can relate. The song shows up on 22 road trip playlists, making it the fourth most popular on our Spotify list.

"Hello Darlin'" by Conway Twitty

“In the car, there’s nothing better than classic country," says Astrid Taran, senior audience editor. "There’s something about driving in the middle of nowhere blasting old school country.”

Now that you’ve got your perfect road trip playlist, where are you heading this summer? A California desert? A beach in Florida? Getting lost on a country road? Leave a comment below!

What is the #1 road trip song?

There is no definitive #1 road trip song, as musical tastes are highly subjective. However, here are some songs that are commonly associated with road trips:

“Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf – This 1969 rock anthem glorifies the freedom of the open road and is a road trip classic.

“Life Is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts – An upbeat country song released in 2006 that celebrates the journey rather than the destination.

“Take It Easy” by The Eagles – A mellow 1970s rock song advising people to take life at their own pace. Often played during long hauls.

“I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett – A feel good rock jam from 1981 that never fails to get people singing along.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen – Though not specifically about road trips, this song is guaranteed to be passionately sung by all occupants of the car.

“Radar Love” by Golden Earring – A driving rock song from 1973 about rushing home to a lover that captures the exhilaration of the open road.

“American Pie” by Don McLean – At over 8 minutes long, this folk rock classic keeps the music flowing for miles.

“Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd – A Southern rock staple ideal for cross country road trips through the American South.

So while there’s no definitive #1, these songs are certainly strong contenders based on their enduring popularity and ability to capture the spirit of the great American road trip!

How long should a road trip playlist be?

Generally, a road trip playlist should be at least 3 hours long, but can range upwards of 6 hours or more. The length of the ideal playlist really depends on the length of the trip and personal preferences.

Here are some general guidelines:

For short trips under 3 hours , a playlist of 30-50 songs is usually sufficient. You want enough variety to last the whole drive but not so much that you’re constantly skipping around.

For medium length trips of 3-6 hours , aim for a playlist in the range of 50-100 songs . This provides more variety and reduces repetition over an extended drive time.

For very long road trips of 6+ hours , a playlist of 100-200+ songs is recommended. The longer the trip, the more music you’ll need to cover all those miles without getting bored.

Consider the vibe you want for the trip too. An energetic, uptempo playlist can help keep drivers alert on long hauls. For more mellow trips, create a laidback playlist.

Mix up the genres and eras to appeal to multiple travelers. Classic road trip songs sprinkled among current hits keeps the playlist fresh.

Organize thematic playlists for different legs of the trip – driving music, sunset songs, sing-along favorites. This adds variety.

The key is striking the right balance of variety and continuity in an order that flows well. Don’t just throw every song you like into one massive playlist. Curate it thoughtfully for the specific trip and travelers. Bon voyage!

These are all classics for sure when you’re talking about a road trip. My favorite would be Sammy Hagar “I Can’t Drive 55”. Something about that cool flow that makes it perfect for a summer road trip. But I would not follow the advice because I wish not to get pulled over crossing the country LOL.

Thank you so much for putting out this list of road trips and songs!!

Best Apple Music Playlists

Good luck keeping up with all the music that flows into streaming services every waking moment of our lives. Now more than ever, we turn to entities that can make sense of these releases and organize them into digestible forms. We call these people playlist curators, and Apple Music has some of the best on the planet. But, like Spotify , there are so many curated playlists to choose from that it’s difficult to figure out which ones you absolutely need to check out. And if you’re trying to understand how to find playlists on apple music, well, you can either tap the magnifying glass icon and search or appreciate the fact that we’ve done all the work for you. So, have no fear. We’ve done the leg (or should I say ear?) work for you. From Unwind to Breaking R&B, here are the best playlists on Apple Music that you need to check out.

No matter who you are—or what kind of music you usually listen to—there’s always a part of your day where you need a little time to unwind and relax. That’s where Apple Music’s Unwind playlist comes in. The constantly updated playlist blends indie pop, electronic, and R&B sounds for a collection of music that will help you shed the stresses of the day. Pour a glass of tea and enjoy this one. You deserve it.

It’s nearly impossible to keep up with the constantly evolving machine that is contemporary rap. Every minute, either your fave or most hated (and everyone in between) drops something that demands attention. The Plug is Apple Music’s news bulletin, covering new releases from rap’s next stars, ranging from Baby Keem to Juice WRLD. With a wide-ranging focus of bass-heavy trap anthems to booty-bouncing bops, this is where you’ll find the latest and greatest from under-the-radar talent.

Top 100 Global

Apple Music is full of playlists that are expertly curated by users and staff, but sometimes you just want to find the most popular songs. The Top 100 Global playlist updates every day to reflect the most-streamed songs from around the world. Make sure you’re in the loop about the songs that shape global culture at any given time and follow the playlist now .

Soul Brother No. 2

Drowning in 808s eternally isn’t always the best way to consume the medium. Soul Brother No. 2 is a grainy, jazzy mix of hip-hop with bluesy elements from many of the genre’s biggest names. At the moment, Kendrick Lamar’s “FEEL.” starts it off, only for the musicality of Kanye West’s “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” to command attention immediately after. The playlist also includes Isaiah Rashad, Smino, Denzel Curry, Goldlink (four paragons that frequently dibble and dabble in these aesthetics), as well as established elites like Nas and A Tribe Called Quest. You’ll imagine rainy city blocks and warm coffee shops by the time it runs its course.

Apple’s pop-curated playlist is perfect post-shower, no towel music. It also doubles as the soundtrack to throwing the backpack off your shoulders at the end of a long day. In My Room is populated by the calming whispers of artists like Joji and Khalid, while the sullen chords of pop stars like Taylor Swift and Lana Del Reyadd some gravitas to the mix. If there’s a feel here, it’s ethereal. There’s a majestic nature to its simplicity and quietness, making it, collectively, one of the most relaxing listens you’ll find on Apple Music’s vast database.

Breaking R&B

Although they often escape our memories, dreams are collections of sentimental thoughts that live in your subconscious. The muses of love, lust, hurt, and joy radiate through the sedated sounds of rhythm and blues—all of which are found in Apple Music’s Breaking R&B playlist. This playlist mainly works to put you on. Whether you’re at work, on your daily commute, or you’ve just turned on your alarm clock to knock out for the evening, this playlist will put you on to the new class of R&B while submerging you into your clearest dream state: soothed, satisfied, and free.

The A-List: Hip-Hop

The A-List: Hip-Hop contains the biggest, baddest streaming gems, with some more obscure cuts sprinkled in. What doesn’t change is that these are gargantuan, parade-stopping listens. The sounds are vast and varied, too. You’ll find the watery “Highest in the Room” by Travis Scott, just a few songs before the catchy “Glo Up” by Lil Tecca.

Midnight City

A ride through your local city (unless it’s New York) is typically made up of long stretches of green lights, little-to-no cars on the road, and a necessary feeling of tranquility. It’s at moments like these where Apple Music’s Midnight City blooms into sensibility. It’s a mass of gummy pop and purplish synths that send shooting neon lights from the eardrums into your peripheral vision. Robyn’s nostalgic hits come to mind with this description, but there are some more surprising choices here as well. It feels like I’m listening to the soundtrack to a Midnight Club game right now. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition , to be precise.

The New Atlanta

Atlanta, as a fortress of rap, is impenetrable. It contains every kind of foot soldier that you can imagine. It’s impossible to take its crown, and The New Atlanta is proof. From 21 Savage to Future to Lil Baby to Lil Yachty, the brand is impenetrable. The aesthetic is inimitable. The quality of the music may not satisfy everyone, but the commercial sheen and easily recognizable array of names more than make up for it. It’s astounding just how much of the rap game hails from Atlanta. This playlist will open your eyes.

The New Chicago

If Atlanta is the current fortress for commercial rap, Chicago is the eclectic city in the sky. The area has moved away from its harsh drill sound from more than five years ago and has become a wide array of contrasting skills that mesh together. Inclusions from artists like Lil Durk contain some of the brutal street machismo of Chicago past, while Noname’s offerings are silky throughout. It’s not all either of these extremes, with CupcakKe bringing some comedic sheen and 600Breezy rapping quietly and effectively. These aren’t the sounds of frequently copied and watered-down contemporary rap styles. This is a playlist full of unique, tasteful imprints from a city poised for a second coming.

Motown Love Songs

Everyone has their opinion on modern R&B music, but most of us can agree that it isn’t as vulnerable as it was yesterday. This yesterday isn’t necessarily a time period, but an era of passion (and a lack of voice-editing technology). Motown Love Songs is a collection of powerful romantic ballads that should come with a coupon code for 50% off fresh roses. Johnny Gill’s “My, My, My” is where the waves crash together at their highest point, with a wall of feels cascading as the goosebumps peak. Smokey Robinson appears on the same tracklist as both Stevie Wonder and Boyz II Men. There is some Jackson 5 here as well, and it opens with Marvin Gaye to really set the stage for the night to come. Grab a partner, hold them close, and turn off the lights.

Blonded Los Santos 97.8 FM

Frank Ocean continues to prove himself as one of modern music’s most intriguing minds. When he brought his skills as a curator to Grand Theft Auto 5  near the end of 2017, the world was eager to hear what the singer chose for his personal radio station. The mix here is astounding. “International Feel” by Todd Rundgren is bold and thunderous while Frank Ocean’s own “Provider” plays the opposite and keeps things reserved, calm, and collected. There’s so much unpredictability here, but the constant is that each song feels perfectly selected to cover the vast range of Frank’s massive musical mind. This is the only playlist where you’ll find SWV’s seductive “Rain” in the same vicinity as Migos’ “First 48.”

For some perkiness and pep in your step, The Lounge is a playlist that’ll whip you into shape. It wisely juxtaposes jumpy grooves with downtempo vocal cuts featuring heavenly melodies. “Comfortable” by Moods demands you to slink into a sofa, and enjoy its coolness and “Color World” manages to conjure kaleidoscope images thanks to its bold funk patterns and whispering voices. This collection of rhythms will keep your heart under 80 beats per minute by making sure that there’s no reason to leave the couch. Let Kaytranada, Osvaldo, Audio Dope, and the other members of its smooth cast absolve you of your problems. You’ll have to get up for the remote, though.

When it’s time to get energetic and jump off the chain, It’s Lit! contains everything you’ll need to make sure that happens. The playlist is designed for club DJ consumption and AUX cord domination when your other friends don’t have anything good on their iPhones. It’s bombastic, featuring viral hits from artists like DaBaby, Young Thug, and Juice WRLD.

For the best in breaking music updates across all genres, New Fire is the one-stop shop for keeping in touch with the music industry writ large. It doesn’t try to connect the dots, and that helps it to act as a sampler of the latest and greatest. Much of the playlist is rooted in hip-hop aesthetics, like growling bass drums and excited hi-hats, so expect to be enchanted by its collective theatricality. This playlist is a collection of everything you’ve probably never heard of.

Slow Down 2 Speed Up

Nike’s curated playlist melts together into a formless mass of moods and atmosphere. It’s the kind of mellow adventure that requires a sleeping mask to distract the eyes and focus on its vast collection of emotions. With the exception of “Facing the Sun” by Fritz Kalkbrenner, no words are uttered or whispered, yet the production speaks volumes thanks to its fascination with intense moaning and crashing synths. I can’t imagine working out to this, but I can’t imagine not having it around after giving it a listen.

Songs of the Summer

Was your summer one for the books? Regardless of your answer to that question, Songs of the Summer captures the toasty feeling of the season with its collection of hot anthems. Updated each year, Songs of the Summer is a great stop to admire the feels and moments of last year’s scorching sunsets.

Heartbreak Pop

What does breaking up sound like? Noses being blown, audible gasps between crying episodes, and sniffling while watching movies on Netflix (yes, for once, I am still here watching this movie). But Apple Music’s Heartbreak Pop playlist adds a sound and aesthetic to this shitty period in life that we all go through and manages to make it sound good. The mood alternates throughout, with Justin Timberlake, Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato, Halsey, and more pushing your needle constantly until you make up your mind if you want to continue pursuing the one that got away or focus on going after the next. I’m in a committed relationship right now, but I know that Heartbreak Pop would give me the strength to hop on Tinder if things don’t work out.

The Pharmacy

The Pharmacy is the official playlist for Apple Music’s radio station of the same name, created by Dr. Dre and co-hosted by Xzibit. The playlist brings West Coast music to the masses with a tracklist of legends like N.W.A. and Snoop Dogg. While the radio show primarily focuses on the West Coast’s contributions to hip-hop, the playlist also incorporates sounds from every end of the country. You can catch anyone from J. Cole to Nicki Minaj, and Nas on this playlist. No matter the region, it’s all good rap music.

To me, adventure songs are a vital component of any travel playlist. They have the power to transport us to far-off destinations, evoke a sense of excitement, bring us back to a place we have been before, and enhance our overall travel experience.

What are adventure songs?

Adventure songs are a collection of tracks that encapsulate the common themes of the spirit of exploration and wanderlust. These songs often feature lyrics or melodies that inspire a sense of adventure, evoke imagery of breathtaking landscapes, or convey the feeling of embarking on a new journey. Whether it’s an upbeat tempo, catchy hook, or an inspiring lyric, adventure songs have the ability to awaken our inner explorers and ignite our desire for new experiences.

Why are adventure songs important for your travel playlist?

Adventure songs play a crucial role in shaping your travel experience. They serve as the soundtrack to your adventures, setting the mood and enhancing the emotions associated with each moment.

  • Inspiration: Adventure songs have a way of inspiring us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. They motivate us to seek new horizons, try new activities, and make the most of our travel experiences.
  • Mood enhancement: The right adventure song can instantly uplift your spirits and create a positive atmosphere. It can infuse energy into your journey, making even the most mundane moments feel exciting and memorable.
  • Memories: Adventure songs have a unique ability to imprint themselves onto our memories. By associating certain songs with specific travel experiences, we can easily recall those moments and relive the emotions associated with them whenever we hear those songs again.
  • Cultural immersion: Adventure songs often reflect the local music and culture of the places we visit. Including popular or traditional songs in the region can help us connect with the local culture and gain a deeper understanding of our destination.

Whether you’re embarking on a thrilling road trip, hiking through picturesque landscapes, or exploring bustling city streets, make sure to curate a playlist that captures the spirit of adventure and fuels your wanderlust.

When it comes to curating the perfect travel playlist, you want songs that transport you to new worlds and ignite your sense of adventure. The best adventure songs have a way of inspiring us and setting the mood for unforgettable journeys. Next, I’ll explore the key criteria I consider for selecting the ultimate adventure songs.

Inspired by Nature and Places

A main aspect of adventure songs is their ability to evoke the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the allure of different places. These songs paint vivid landscapes in our minds, allowing us to feel the wind on our faces as we explore majestic mountains, wander through lush forests, or bask in the glow of sunsets on faraway beaches. They capture the essence of our natural world and transport us to breathtaking destinations.

Songs about Exploration and Discovery

Adventure is all about stepping into the unknown, venturing beyond our comfort zones, and embracing the spirit of exploration. Songs that embody this spirit are essential additions to any travel playlist. They guide us through uncharted territories, inspire us to seek new experiences and remind us of the thrill that comes with discovering the unfamiliar. These songs fuel our curiosity and encourage us to embark on exciting journeys.

Inspiring Lyrics

Powerful lyrics have the ability to touch our hearts and resonate deeply with our souls. Adventure songs with inspiring lyrics have a way of fueling our motivation and encouraging us to seize the day. They remind us that life is an adventure waiting to unfold and that there is a world of possibilities beyond the horizon. These songs uplift our spirits, instill a sense of courage, and remind us of the transformative power of travel.

So, without further ado, let’s get to it!

When embarking on an exciting journey, having the right soundtrack can make all the difference. These classic adventure songs have a way of transporting us to new places, filling our hearts with wanderlust, and adding an extra touch of excitement to our travels. I’d like to list a few of the signature songs that you’ve probably already thought of because I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention them, but the rest of this blog post will introduce you to new ones you probably haven’t heard before. I’m here to expand your horizons!

“Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver

There’s something undeniably enchanting about the picturesque landscapes of the countryside. John Denver captures this essence perfectly in his iconic song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” With its heartfelt lyrics and melodic harmonies, this song is an ode to the beauty of rural America. As you listen to the soothing tunes, you can almost feel the wind in your hair as you drive along open roads, exploring charming small towns and breathtaking natural wonders.

“Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen

When you’re embarking on an adventure, sometimes all you need is a powerful anthem to fuel your wanderlust. Look no further than Bruce Springsteen’s timeless hit, “Born to Run.” This energetic and empowering song tells the story of a restless spirit yearning for freedom and new horizons. With its catchy chorus and electrifying guitar riffs, “Born to Run” will make you feel like you’re invincible, ready to conquer any road that lies ahead.

“I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring every nook and cranny of the world, Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” is the ultimate travel song for you. This fast-paced tune takes you on a whirlwind journey across countless cities and towns, making you feel like a true globetrotter. Whether you’re listening to it during a road trip or while planning your next adventure, “I’ve Been Everywhere” will ignite your curiosity and inspire you to explore even the smallest towns you might never have considered otherwise.

But like I said, I’m here to introduce you to the best adventure songs you haven’t heard already! Every list you pull up on Google is likely the same because people are turning to AI (artificial intelligence) to make their lists. Not me. I’m here to share my personal playlists with you to expand your horizons. So, turn up the volume, hit the road, and let the melodies guide you to unforgettable experiences and cherished memories.

“On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson

“On the Road Again” is an iconic country song by Willie Nelson that captures the thrill and adventure of life on tour. It quickly became one of Nelson’s signature hits. The song’s catchy melody, lively rhythm, and relatable lyrics create a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement for the journey ahead.

It serves as a metaphor for resilience and the constant movement that defines Nelson’s career and the broader human experience. Beyond its surface-level depiction of life on the road, “On the Road Again” resonates with audiences as an anthem for embracing the unknown, finding solace in the journey, and cherishing the present moment.

A family hikes through the forest in the mountains.

The mountains have a majestic allure that has inspired countless songs throughout history. These songs often capture the grandeur and beauty of towering peaks, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. The melodies and lyrics can ignite your spirit of adventure and motivate you to conquer any challenge that lies ahead.

  • “Montana” by James Taylor – A soulful and reflective folk song that transports listeners to the serene landscapes of Montana, evoking a sense of peacefulness and longing for a simpler, more connected way of life.

  • “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus – An empowering pop anthem that encourages listeners to embrace the challenges of life with determination and perseverance, reminding us that the journey itself is as important as reaching the destination.

Songs Inspired by Forests

Forests are enchanting places that can evoke a sense of mystery and tranquility. The songs inspired by these lush landscapes often capture the serenity and natural beauty of the trees, the rustling leaves, and the gentle melodies of the woodland creatures. These songs create a soothing ambiance that complements the peacefulness of the forest.

  • “Four Feet in the Forest”  by Ziggy Alberts – A heartfelt acoustic folk song that celebrates the simple joys of nature, inviting listeners to reconnect with the earth and find solace in the peacefulness of the forest.

Rivers and lakes hold a certain allure, with their flowing waters and shimmering surfaces. The songs inspired by these aquatic wonders often reflect the ebb and flow of life, capturing the tranquility and power of the water. These songs can create a sense of serenity as you immerse yourself in the natural beauty of rivers and lakes.

As you embark on your mountain adventure, be sure to curate a playlist that combines these inspiring songs. Let the melodies and lyrics guide you through the rugged terrain, immerse you in the tranquility of forests, and accompany you as you explore the wonders of rivers and lakes. With the perfect soundtrack, your adventure will be elevated to new heights, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

These are some of my favorite songs inspired by different locations around the world. They capture the essence and spirit of these places through music and lyrics. From Montana to Mexico, from Vienna to Tishomingo, these songs transport listeners to these iconic destinations.

Each song tells a unique story and evokes a sense of nostalgia or adventure associated with the featured place. Whether you’re a traveler or simply a music enthusiast, this list of songs will take you on a musical journey around the globe. I’m certain you’ll find a good song or two to add to your playlist of the best travel songs.

“Tishomingo” by Zach Bryan – A heartfelt country ballad that tells a poignant story of love, loss, and the bittersweet memories of a small town, capturing the essence of nostalgia and the enduring power of hometown connections.

“Beer in Mexico” by Kenny Chesney – A catchy country anthem that transports listeners to a carefree beach paradise, where sipping on a cold beer under the sun brings a sense of relaxation and escape from the everyday grind.

“Africa” by Toto (of course) – An iconic pop-rock song that immerses listeners in a captivating musical journey, painting a vivid picture of the continent with its catchy melodies and lyrical exploration of adventure, longing, and the enduring allure of Africa.

“Vienna” by Billy Joel – A poignant and introspective piano-driven ballad that serves as a reminder to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and not get caught up in the relentless pursuit of success, offering a gentle reassurance that it’s okay to take a moment to breathe and enjoy the journey of life.

“Montana Time” by David Walburn – A charming folk song that captures the essence of Montana’s laid-back and unhurried lifestyle, inviting listeners to embrace the tranquility and natural beauty of the state while savoring the simplicity of life.

“Mexico” by James Taylor – A melodic and nostalgic folk-rock tune that whisks listeners away to the shores of Mexico, painting a vivid picture of the country’s vibrant culture and captivating landscapes while evoking a sense of wanderlust and longing for a peaceful escape.

“California Dreamin'” by The Mamas & The Papas – A timeless folk-rock classic that encapsulates the wistful yearning for sunshine, warmth, and the carefree spirit of California, evoking a sense of nostalgia and the desire to escape to a place of endless possibilities.

Other Favorites

These are just a few of my other favorites that might be a little more cliche or don’t necessarily fall into the aforementioned categories that I wanted to offer up as honorable mentions.

“Cabin out of Nowhere” by Smith & Thell – A delightful pop-folk track that narrates the enchanting story of discovering a secluded cabin in the wilderness, encapsulating the allure of simplicity, solitude, and the longing for a tranquil retreat from the chaos of everyday life.

“Stone” by Whiskey Myers – A gritty Southern rock anthem that exudes a sense of resilience and strength, using powerful guitar riffs and raw vocals to convey a message of overcoming obstacles and standing firm like a solid stone.

“On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons – An upbeat song that radiates joy and optimism, inspiring listeners to embrace a positive outlook on life and revel in the feeling of triumph and invincibility as if standing on top of the world.

“Around the World” by Red Hot Chili Peppers – A high-energy rock anthem that captures the band’s signature funky sound and adventurous spirit, taking listeners on a sonic journey around the United States that reflects the band’s global influences and celebrates the diverse cultures and experiences found around the world.

“Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver – A classic song that beautifully captures the emotions of departure, longing, and the anticipation of a return, as the lyrics express both the excitement of travel and the heartache of leaving loved ones behind.

“Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz – An uplifting rock anthem that invites listeners to break free from constraints, embrace their true selves, and soar above life’s challenges with unbridled freedom and confidence.

“Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts – A spirited country-pop signature song that captures the essence of life’s journey, encouraging listeners to embrace the twists and turns, and find joy in the adventure of the open road.

“Travelin Band” by Creedence Clearwater Revival – An energetic rock and roll anthem that captures the spirit of the road, with its infectious rhythm and lively lyrics igniting a sense of adventure and the desire to hit the highway and experience the thrill of being a part of a traveling band.

“I’m Born To Run” by American Authors – An empowering indie rock anthem that celebrates the exhilaration of freedom, igniting a sense of determination and encouraging listeners to chase their dreams, do things their own way, and break free from the confines of ordinary life.

Selecting the best adventure songs for your road trip playlist can greatly enhance your overall travel experience. These songs have the power to transport you to different places, evoke emotions, and create lasting memories. By incorporating a mix of uplifting, energetic, and inspiring tracks, you can amplify the joy and excitement of your adventures.

Remember to consider your personal preferences and the type of activities you’ll be engaging in during your travels. Additionally, make sure to optimize your playlist for seamless listening by organizing it in a logical order and ensuring a smooth transition between songs. So go ahead, curate your perfect adventure playlist, and let the music be your guide on your next road trip!

10 of the best lossless tracks to stream on Apple Music

Streaming in 24-bit/48kHz resolution? ALAC it. ALAC it a lot

Best Apple Music Lossless tracks to try now

We'll get straight to it: this is our pick of the best lossless tracks we've been enjoying on Apple Music since support for CD (and above)-quality arrived on the service in the summer. Some we stumbled upon during product testing, others were eagerly suggested by our hi-fi-devoted readership (thank you for that, by the way).

If all of these words make sense to you in the order in which they are written, scroll on down and get to streaming, friend.

If, however, you're wondering what on earth Apple Music lossless actually is and how to get it, all is revealed in our Apple Music Lossless explainer .

In short , though, lossless audio is generally defined as CD (and above) quality music that's compressed in a way that it doesn't lose quality (is 'lossy'). And to enjoy such tracks on Apple Music, you will need an Apple Music subscription, an Android or iOS device, and any wired headphones – or, thanks to the most recent HomePod 15.1 update, an Apple HomePod . (For those with wired headphones and an iPhone, know that the Apple 3.5mm headphone jack adapter supports Apple's lossless streaming too.) Of course (and it has to be said), the better your equipment, the more you'll benefit from this jump in audio quality.

In the Apple Music app in your phone's settings, you can choose the audio quality for streaming and downloading audio – 'Lossless' for a maximum resolution of 24-bit/48kHz, or 'Hi-Res Lossless' for a maximum resolution of 24-bit/192kHz. The latter requires extra hardware in the shape of an external DAC, such as the AudioQuest DragonFly Cobalt .

Partly because of this, we are concentrating on Apple Music's 'Lossless' files for our recommendations here. That said, if you find yourself listening to a 'Hi-Res Lossless' file with simply a wired-headphones-and-device setup (look for the little icons under the track in the app), rest assured that you will hear it in lossless quality.

So, let's get to it!

Les Gordon – Flirting with June

As the kind reader who suggested this track ventures, perhaps we should curate a playlist specifically intended for the AirPods Max . Get this eye-opening vocal electronica going through Apple's What Hi-Fi? Award-winning, ground-breaking wireless over-ears and wait for the 'ah's to come at your ears from all directions in a remarkably immersive mix.

In lossless quality, this Les Gordon track is a rare treat. Percussion instruments snap, crackle and jingle around you as the leading edges of notes burst in like sharp, angular sonic towers in the otherwise juicy, undulating soundscape.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – The Road

If you've never read Cormac McCarthy's terrifying 2006 post-apocalyptic novel The Road , made into a movie in 2009 (for which this Nick Cave & Warren Ellis track was created), put this on, close your eyes, and imagine walking down a long, grey, desolate road, clouds of ash swirling behind you, ready to run if you must. McCarthy is not afraid to glimpse into the abyss and record his predictions. It takes a special musical composition – and special treatment of it – to recreate that feeling sonically. And that is what we have here.

Lady Gaga – Million Reasons

Such is Gaga's attention to detail concerning every aspect of her art that, occasionally, those production-heavy music videos, outfits and interviews have obscured the fact that first and foremost, this is an incredibly talented stand-and-deliver singer. Here, Mark Ronson lets Gaga's vocal cords do the heavy lifting, accompanied by a pared-back piano and guitar – sometimes strummed, sometimes used as percussion. Later, a crescendo builds, but never at the expense of the detail and texture within her inimitable power-house vocal. The extra space and insight you get from the lossless delivery are truly laid bare here.

Trashlagoon – Feel

Listening to slow-tempo music helps release the neurotransmitter largely responsible for mood (Serotonin, aka the 'happy hormone') while increasing the one (Dopamine) that helps us feel pleasure and simultaneously reducing the stress hormone (Cortisol). All of which is a roundabout way of saying "it's important to have a lossless go-to chill track for the end of a hard day".

This one, from German duo Sebastian Welicki and Niklas Freund (aka Trashlagoon) actually has a mid-tempo time signature, but it is layered with juicy chords, calm key progressions, reverb, sonic articles reminiscent of late-night crickets that meander slowly between your ears, a breathy treble vocal and a celebrated lo-fi background hiss. Sit back and let it wash over you.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

This New York trio (sometimes quartet) typically delivers an indie rock masterclass whether gracing a stage or a recording studio, and this emphatic declaration is no exception. Some love-song lyrics are implored, the stanzas pored over then belted to the heavens after countless bedroom rehearsals and refinements. But when Karen O's vocal finally rises from the raucous guitar and drums with "Wait! They don't love you like I love you...", it feels as if she's only just understood the depths of her emotion – and why she needs to say these words, even though they should have come earlier. A superlative track that sounds extra special in lossless quality.

John Frusciante – Omission

Probably best known as the on-off guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frusciante's solo work is both plentiful and covers a huge variety of genres, including experimental and acid house. This track, for example, is taken from Shadows Collide with People , just one of six (six!) albums Frusciante released in 2004 alone, each exploring different genres and recording techniques.

Frusciante has said that this was his most expensive album to date, costing about $150,000 to produce (his earlier albums had been recorded at home, on multitrack recording devices). On being asked why he chose to lay this one down in a proper Hollywood studio, Frusciante said, "I was sick and tired of people dismissing my records as being fucked-up and unprofessional." Fair enough – and this track is neither of those things.

Omission was written by Josh Klinghoffer, who would go on to become a guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers – and then leave in 2019, when Frusciante would rejoin the band. Again.

Roberto Cacciapaglia – Universal Dance

Cacciapaglia is celebrated by symphony orchestras and listeners worldwide for his innovative, bold compositions exploring the power of sound – and here we see him work out where classical piano meets experimental electronica. For this 2009 track, the former is the star, but the soupçon of the latter (alongside an occasional wave of strings) is beautifully executed and makes for a rousing piece that leaves you feeling much better after it than you did when it began.

Backroad Gee – Live in the Flesh

Backroad Gee (real name still unknown) is an East London-born rap/grime/alternative sensation. While still only 23 years old, he's already recorded with Jay-Z and Kid Cudi – for Netflix’s upcoming Western  The Harder They Fall – and this opening track from his debut mixtape, Reporting Live (From the Back of the Roads) is about as strong a first impression as any rising star could ever hope to make.

BRG recently told Apple Music: "This is a statement piece. It’s a song I made from my slogans and ad-libs, and it gives me the feeling of [the 2007 film]  300 . You know, when they’re about to go to war with spears out? That’s why I had to go with this first – it’s straight to the point.” And true to that inspiration, the timbre and depth of BRG's off-the-cuff battle cries here are emphatic.

Alfa Mist – Keep On

Another first track from an inspired debut album, this time from British keyboardist and producer Alfa Mist. Think seductive, jazz-meets-soul horns, drums, guitar, bass and keys, chock-full of improvisations. These musicians have plenty to say and they clearly felt compelled to do so here.

If you have the time and inclination, the entire 2017 album, Antiphon , is a compelling, multi-layered and often brooding listen that emphatically deserves to be heard in lossless quality.

Vessels – Elliptic

Vessels were considered a post-rock band until 2015, when the Leeds five-piece's third studio album, Dilate , was released. It's a hulking great beast of a techno record and this track hones in on dance-floor euphoria in no small way, with electronica segments, driving dance beats and even an African drum section.

Again, we recommend listening to the whole album – it's all available in lossless quality on Apple Music – but if you need eight minutes and 48 seconds of escapism, get this on your phone, move away from your desk, and dance.

And now, here's the playlist. This is our pick of the best lossless tracks to stream on Apple Music right now, all in one place. As long as you have an Apple Music subscription, you're all set. Enjoy!

Want to suggest a few Apple Music Lossless audio tracks we really ought to add? Please do. A love of music is a prerequisite for a job at What Hi-Fi? and we are always receptive to new artists, as well as established acts whose music has, on streaming services such as Apple Music, Tidal and Qobuz, been opened up and should be celebrated anew in lossless quality.

The Best Apple Music Editorial Playlists to Find New Music in 2023

Are you looking for the best Apple Music playlists? I hope this helps you!

Full disclosure - I am an Android user. That being said, because of the essence of what we do here at Sterefox, I subscribe and use both Spotify and Apple Music when it comes to music discovery, and yes Apple Music is available for Android.

The product team at Apple has done outstanding work in recent years to elevate the in-app experience and bring new features to life. The product team's focus on user-centric design is particularly noteworthy. Each new feature is carefully crafted to enhance functionality while maintaining an intuitive and aesthetically pleasing interface.

In addition, the editor's team is constantly on the lookout because their playlist gets a constant regular update with the freshest things out there. What I appreciate is the recently updated note on each playlist as you browse Apple Music.

I also want to highlight how much I love the animated artwork on some of the editorial playlists on Apple Music. It adds a layer of cool to the whole listening experience. With all that being said, I want to share with you my personal findings when it comes to the best-curated playlists on the platform. Also, if you use Apple Music, feel free to follow us and our Stereofox playlists here .

Stay up to date.

New music and exclusive updates in your inbox weekly.

BEATstrumentals

BEATstrumentals is hands down one of the best low-key groove selections by the Apple Music team. The playlist , which gets a frequent weekly update, is a collection of chillhop and lofi beats, perfect to plug in the background and space out while nodding your head.

Whether they're derived from jazz, funk, soul, or ambient music, these chill hip-hop beats from around the world provide a soothing soundtrack for breezing through to-do lists, focusing on work, or unwinding after a long day.

If you follow Stereofox, you should know that some of us are diehard electronic music fans. While that might be one of the most generic terms I could have used, there's this specific segment of electronic music we feature and I think LOOPS is pretty much exact replication of our taste. In their latest update, the guys include Four Tet, Kllo, Caribou, Maribou State, Yaeji, Bearcubs, Tycho... the list goes on and on, but definitely artists we love, follow and feature. A definite rave vibe.

The history of electronic music is synonymous with innovation—in sound, technology, and ideas. Whether in the underground or in the spotlight, the artists featured here are always pushing forward, either inventing bold, new styles or finding fresh ways to flip old, familiar favorites.

We can't be talking about electronic music and miss those ambient-driven sounds which help us when we need to focus on a task. And yes, the world is not just chillhop when it comes to studying. Apple Music's Pure Focus is a playlist of haunting and captivating sonic waves that will elevate you.

Sharpen your senses with this mix of introspective electronic soundscapes.

Time to step into The Lounge . Dope rhythms, downtempo and tight beat grooves are definitely going to be your guide into the world of cool electronics. The 100 tracks playlist always has some cool surprised along the way, so in terms of vibes and BPM you shall definitely not be surprised.

Here's a mix of downtempo indie rock, jazzy electronic, and outré hip-hop that holds the vibe without rocking the boat. Whether you're reading, cooking, or just lying back and chilling out, put this on and let it ride.

Midnight City

Midnighty City's name speaks for itself. If you're looking for that sweet spot where indie dance, funk, and electronic dance music live, you will find home here. Little Dragon, Flume, TOKiMONSTA, Grimes, Disclosure, Tame Impala - the list is diverse, but definitely

Night isn't just a time—it's a feeling, a place where cares dissipate into dream. Mixing left-field dance-pop and indie electronic, here's a set that keeps the pulse up without losing its sense of wee-hours imagination and play.

Bedtime Beats

While I do use Headspace, there's one place on Apple Music where I know I can find an escape when it comes to channeling negative energy out of my brain before going to bed. Bedtime beats. Awesome artwork and a wide selection of beat lullabies for those who love lofi and chillhop musc.

The moon’s up, the hour’s late, the world’s asleep. Look, it’s been a long day—no need to belabor the point. Here’s a mix of low-key instrumental hip-hop for unwinding and falling asleep.

R&B Trends

Since we're talking bedroom, in case you're looking for your next sexy time soundtrack, you gotta head to R&B Trends . Subtle beats and silky soulful vocals, you'll be in the company of H.E.R., emawk, Frank Ocean and alike.

R&B is one of the more dynamic spaces in modern music—and this is where you'll find the boundary-pushing artists leading the conversation. Taking cues from hip-hop and electronic, but still anchored by tradition, here are the tracks pointing the way R&B is heading

Yeah, selecting New Fire was a no brainer. The Apple Music guys have added Thundercat, Childish Gambino and BROCKHAMPTON in their latest update (by the time I write these lines). Since we're sliding in the hip hop waters, you definitely shouldn't sleep on this playlist.

The name of this playlist says it all: These tunes are super-fresh and scorching-hot. It's your place to keep up with the best new hip-hop, R&B, and dance.

Conscious Hip-Hop Essentials

We can't talk about hip hop and skip the classics. Lots of old school vibe when it comes to Conscious Hip-Hop Essentials . The best thing about this playlist is that besides legends like GZA, Common, Wu Tang and Gang Starr, you'll hear heaps of new talent like Noname and Oddisee.

Hip-hop has been a political hotbed since its inception, broadcasting messages about equality and oppression that were as powerful as the beats, flow, and delivery. In the beginning, there were artists like Grandmaster Flash reporting on the conditions of the communities where they lived. Then groups like N.W.A. and Public Enemy came onto the rap landscape in the mid-’80s issuing direct challenges to authority figures like the police and politicians. And while the ferocity of messaging hasn’t died down, the lens has widened, with artists like Common and Slum Village delivering rhymes about romance as resistance.

High Vibes Yoga

Apple Music has been historically excelling when it comes to curating for the health & fitness space and one of their flagship editorials - High Vibes Yoga is no exception!

With its long builds, ecstatic drops, and trippy tribal- and house-influenced grooves, this playlist is designed for collective, high-energy yoga. More rave than relaxation session. More Burning Man than bodhisattva. So limber up, find your inner animal, and let it go. We rotate selections here regularly, so if you hear something you like, add it to your library.

Apple Music Playlists

The editorial staff at Apple Music is constantly expanding and venturing into different topics, so I feel this page will be a constant work in progress. In addition, the team added their Replay playlists in November 2019 and I've heard some pretty good feedback so far.

Those playlists are not created automatically and you will need to enable them from your Apple Music account. In addition, you can grab your 2023 Replay mixes from this page .

Part 1. Make a Custom Running Playlist in Apple Music for Yourself

The power of a great running playlist should never be underestimated. It can transform an ordinary run into an extraordinary experience, providing the motivation, energy, and rhythm to keep you going mile after mile. In this part, we will explore why having a well-curated running playlist is essential and guide you through the process of creating a custom playlist in Apple Music that perfectly matches your running style and preferences.

How The Workout Music Can Inspire You During Your Run

Motivation and Inspiration

One of the key reasons why you need a good running playlist is the ability to motivate and inspire you during your runs . The right combination of upbeat and energizing songs can help you stay focused, push through fatigue, and maintain a positive mindset throughout your workout. It can be that extra boost you need to tackle a challenging hill or surpass your personal best.

Rhythm and Pace Control

Running to the beat of your favorite tunes can help you establish and maintain a consistent rhythm and pace. Research has shown that synchronizing your movements with music can enhance your performance and make your runs feel more effortless. A well-timed playlist with songs that match your desired pace can serve as a powerful tool to optimize your running efficiency.

Distraction and Mindfulness

Running can sometimes be mentally challenging, especially during long-distance or monotonous runs. A compelling playlist can serve as a distraction, taking your mind off the physical exertion and helping you stay engaged. It allows you to enter a flow state where you're fully immersed in the music, providing a sense of mindfulness and creating a more enjoyable running experience.

Personalization and Connection

Everyone has different music preferences, and creating a custom running playlist allows you to tailor your music selection to your unique tastes. Running is a personal journey, and the music you choose should reflect your personality, interests, and goals. By curating your own playlist, you create a deeper connection with your runs and make them a reflection of who you are.

How to Choose the Right Songs for Your Running Playlist on Apple Music

Creating the perfect running playlist involves selecting songs that align with your running style, pace, and personal preferences. In Part 2, we provided you with a list of good running playlists on Apple Music.

Now, in Part 3, we'll guide you through the process of choosing the right songs for your custom running playlist.

  • Tempo and Energy : The tempo and energy of a song play a crucial role in setting the pace and mood of your run. Consider selecting songs with a BPM (beats per minute) that matches your desired running pace. Upbeat tracks with energetic beats can provide an extra boost of motivation during intense workouts, while slower songs can be great for warm-ups, cooldowns, or recovery runs.
  • Personal Motivation : Choose songs that personally resonate with you and ignite a sense of motivation and inspiration. Look for lyrics or melodies that speak to your goals, dreams, or values. Remember, the more connected you feel to the music, the more it will fuel your determination and drive during your runs.
  • Genre Diversity : Incorporate a variety of genres in your playlist to keep things fresh and engaging. Mix up genres like pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, and more. This diversity will prevent monotony and cater to different moods and running intensities. Experiment with different genres to discover what works best for you.
  • Song Length and Structure : Consider the duration and structure of the songs. Longer tracks can be ideal for endurance runs, while shorter and more energetic songs may be better suited for interval training or high-intensity workouts. Look for songs with dynamic shifts or build-ups that can help you push through challenging moments.
  • Personal Favorites and New Discoveries : Include your all-time favorite songs that never fail to get you moving, along with new discoveries that excite and energize you. Don’t be afraid to explore different artists, albums, or even genres you haven’t explored before. You might find hidden gems that become essential elements of your running playlist.
  • Test and Adjust : Remember that creating the perfect running playlist is an iterative process. Take your playlist for a test run (literally!) and pay attention to how each song makes you feel. Make note of the songs that enhance your performance and remove or replace the ones that don’t resonate with you or disrupt your flow.

By considering tempo, energy, personal motivation, genre diversity, song length and structure, and a combination of personal favorites and new discoveries, you can curate a running playlist that becomes the ultimate companion for your workouts. Enjoy the process of selecting songs that inspire, uplift, and keep you moving forward on your running journey.

Taylor Swift Curates Playlists Based on Stages of Heartbreak for Apple Music Ahead of 'Tortured Poets Department' Release

Swift will release her new album on April 19

best travel playlist apple music

Republic Records

Taylor Swift is telling the end of a "love story" on her terms.

On Friday, April 5, the pop megastar, 34, shared five exclusive playlists with Apple Music that explore the five stages of heartbreak — something fans had theorized her forthcoming album The Tortured Poets Department  would be exploring.

According to a press release, with each playlist, Swift has chosen songs from her own catalog that fit each stage: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Scott Eisen/TAS23/Getty

I Love You, It’s Ruining My Life Songs  represents denial and features songs like “Lavender Haze” and “Style (Taylor’s Version)."

"This is a list of songs about getting so caught up in the idea of something that you have a hard time seeing the red flags, possibly resulting in moments of denial and maybe a little bit of delusion. Results may vary," the 14-time Grammy winner told Apple Music.

On You Don’t Get to Tell Me About Sad Songs , Swift tackles anger with songs like "Bad Blood (Taylor's Version" and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor’s Version)."

"These songs all have one thing in common, I wrote them while feeling anger. Over the years, I've learned that anger can manifest itself in a lot of different ways, but the healthiest way that it manifests itself in my life is when I can write a song about it, and then oftentimes, that helps me get past it," she said.

With  Am I Allowed to Cry? Songs , Swift dives into bargaining with tracks like "Soon You'll Get Better" and "This Is Me Trying." She explained that these songs embrace the act of "trying to make deals with yourself or someone that you care about."

"You're trying to make things better, you're oftentimes feeling really desperate, because oftentimes we have a gut intuition that tells us things are not going to go the way that we hope, which makes us more desperate, which makes us bargain more," she told Apple Music.

Swift tackles depression with Old Habits Die Screaming Songs , which features songs like "Champagne Problems" and "Forever Winter (Taylor's Version)."

With this playlist, she dives into "the feelings of depression that often lace their way through my songs."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

"I often feel like when I'm either listening to songs or writing songs that deal with this intensity of loss and hopelessness, usually that's in the phase where I'm close to getting past that feeling," she said of the playlist.

The final playlist is I Can Do It with a Broken Heart Songs , which represents acceptance and features songs like “You’re On Your Own, Kid” and “Long Story Short."

Swift said this collection of songs "represent making room for more good in your life, making that choice because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too."

The "I Can See You" performer's 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department — which she announced during the 2024  Grammys  while accepting the award for best pop vocal album for Midnights — is due April 19.

Spotify now lets you create an AI-made playlist with just a text prompt

artie

Just over a year after rolling out its AI DJ feature , Spotify on Sunday  introduced another AI-powered feature: AI Playlist. Available in beta first to Premium subscribers in the UK and Australia, AI Playlist lets you enter a text prompt to generate a playlist.

Spotify offered examples of descriptive text prompts for some inspiration: "an indie folk playlist to give my brain a big warm hug" and "relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season." The possibilities are endless. You could ask for a playlist of "music to put me in the mood for baseball season," "music to fight off invading aliens," "an unsettling playlist to listen to while I'm painting clowns," or "a playlist of songs that make me feel like I'm in a movie."

Also: Spotify plans to raise prices in some countries. Here's how it may affect you

The prompts can reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, or even emojis. While Spotify's AI will choose songs from a variety of genres, decades, and artists, your preferences will help the AI shape the playlist. There are some limitations: your prompts can't be about brands, current events, or non-music related descriptions. Spotify also adds that it has "measures in place around prompts that are offensive."

Once a playlist is generated, you can refine it with further prompts like "more recent songs" or "a little slower." Swiping on a specific song removes it from the playlist.

To use the AI Playlist feature, head to Your Library in the Spotify app. From there, click the plus button to create a new playlist and then tap AI Playlist. You'll see a few suggestions, or you can create your own.

Spotify will automatically save your new playlist in your library.

Also:  Spotify won't remove all AI-generated content, as it rolls out some of its own

While AI Playlist is not available in the US yet, the feature already feels more useful than Spotify's first foray into AI, which took a user's listening history and used AI to suggest new songs and artists.

Spotify did not share when the feature would get a wider rollout.

Stability AI's new audio model creates even longer songs - here's how to try it for free

Spotify reportedly plans to offer song remixing for the tiktok crowd, generating music using ai in copilot just got even better.

How to transfer Spotify playlists to Apple Music

M aking the switch from Spotify to Apple Music, and can't imagine leaving behind all your carefully curated playlists? Or maybe you want your entire library synced up and duplicated when you make the big switch from one music streaming service to another. Either way, this guide should help make changing that process as easy as possible.

Apple Music and Spotify are competing platforms, of course, so neither is going to make it easy to leave one service for the other. As such, the two don't play nicely with each other – so any ideas you might have about dragging and dropping, or copying and pasting your playlists or songs from one platform to another need to be let go right now.

The only way to transfer your playlists over, other than going through them track by track, is by using third-party apps. There are many apps and programs that can facilitate this transfer, but three of the major players in the market are SongShift, Soundiiz and Free Your Music.

This guide lays out the basic features and pricing structure for each app, so you can decide which option will serve you best when making the leap as you transfer your Spotify playlists to Apple Music.

First up, you will need to download the Songshift app on to your device so you can sign up and get started. The app will have you sign in to your two music accounts, Spotify and Apple Music.

Next, you can select "Setup Source" before selecting the playlist or playlists you wish to transfer from Spotify to Apple Music. As part of this process, you need to select "Setup Destination" and pick Apple Music as your end source. Then simply hit the "I'm Finished" button and the selected playlists will start transferring right away.

After this, you can select the "Ready For Review" option to check everything has worked as expected. If you spot any mistakes, you can select the correct song manually and select "Confirm Matches" – this allows Songshift to make sure everything is correct in your final output.

Once all that is done, you should be able to listen to your Spotify playlists in Apple Music.

Pricing: Songshift Pro charges $30 per year (or $7 per month) for individual use – which converts roughly to £24/year or £5.50/month. The Pro version will let you transfer multiple playlists and adds plenty of extra features, such as SpeedMatch (match multiple songs speedily), SongShare (share with friends regardless of which platform they use), SpeedShift (faster transfers), Batch Setup (configure multiple transfers in one go), and more.

Free Your Music

Free Your Music is available to download on the App Store, from where you can install and start using the app right away. The app gives you the ability to transfer music between a variety of music streaming services – there are more than 20 options – and it's relatively simple. Plus, the free version lets you transfer a single playlist of up to 100 songs.

To transfer your Spotify playlists to Apple Music using Free Your Music, open the app and select your source platform, in this case Spotify. Then select the output platform – that'll be Apple Music. Then select the playlists, albums or tracks you want to transfer. Hit confirm and you're done.

Pricing: With Free Your Music's free version, you can transfer one playlist of up to 100 songs. Want to transfer more beyond that? You can pay one upfront fee of £10.99 for the Basic tier (unlimited transfers), or you can opt for an annual £34.99 subscription for the Premium tier, or pay one hefty £174.99 fee for Lifetime access. The last two options add in auto-synchronisation of all playlists and albums, backup to the cloud, rematching incorrect or failed song matches, email support, and many more extra features.

The Soundiiz app is specifically designed to transfer playlists from Spotify to Apple Music. As such, it is very easy to use and you can start for free.

Get the app first, then open and select the "Transfer Tool". Sign in to both your Spotify and Apple Music accounts from within this tool. Now select all the playlists you wish to copy over. Confirm the selection and the transfer will begin.

Pricing: Soundiiz's free version will let you move playlists one at a time. If you want to do multiple transfers in batches with more tracks and additional features, then you need to pay for the more Premium offering. The Premium tier costs £36 per year and gets you more tracks per playlist, active sync, metadata and album management, and more.

Is Spotify or Apple Music better? Is it worth switching from Spotify to Apple Music?

This entirely depends on how you listen to music and which features you prioritise in a music streaming platform. Both streaming services have a variety of features that offer recommendations based on users' listening, including regular personalised playlists, and the ability to create your own playlists and collaborate with friends.

Want better quality and hi-res music? Apple Music's entire 100 million+ catalogue is available in up to 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res Lossless quality. Spotify's equally large catalogue is available up to 320kbps max, which is relatively poor quality, and there is still no sign of the rumoured Spotify Hi-Fi tier.

Want exclusive podcasts and fun, insightful stats about your music listening? Spotify adds podcasts in the same place as its large music catalogue, and its annual Spotify Wrapped is a global social-sharing phenomenon.

Care about spatial audio? Apple Music has a huge catalogue of Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos tracks so you can experience immersive audio with compatible products. Spotify lags behind other services as it does not support any spatial or Dolby Atmos music.

Spotify Connect offers wider integration with hi-fi products, while Apple Music needs AirPlay to stream music to compatible products. Spotify is platform agnostic, while some Apple Music features are available to iOS users only.

Essentially, if you prioritise better sound quality and hi-res music, Apple Music is the stronger option. If wider compatibility and sharing with friends and social media is a bigger concern, Spotify is worth sticking with.

Does Apple Music have hi-res music?

Yes, Apple Music's entire 100 million+ catalogue is available in higher resolution audio quality than Spotify. Apple Music's songs are available in up to 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res Lossless quality – you can select the audio quality from your iPhone's Apple Music settings.

Spotify's music catalogue is available in 320kbps quality maximum, which is far from ideal and much lower than CD quality (which is 16-bit/44.1kHz or 1411kbps). There have been rumours of a Spotify Hi-Fi tier with hi-res audio ever since 2021, but that has yet to launch. If higher-quality music is becoming a priority for you and you are tired of waiting for Spotify Hi-Res to become a reality, switching to Apple Music for its hi-res music catalogue and better sound quality is a smart move.
