Billy Joel, born William Martin "Billy" Joel is an American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer, born on May 9th 1949 in New York, America.

Billy was born into a musical family, his Father being a pianist encouraged him to learn the piano at an early age and was taught by American pianist Morton Estrin and musician Timothy Ford.

The New York born musician decided to pursue a music career after being inspired by The Beatles. He went on to find a group named 'The Echoes' who were similar to The Beatles and specialised in British Invasion covers. The band started to record in studios in 1965, but Billy was unfortunately kicked out of the band as he refused to wear the matching outfits worn by the other members. However, Billy went on to play the piano solo for various productions and recordings.

Eventually he recorded his first solo studio album, released in 1971, named "Cold Spring Harbour". This was not as successful as he had hope however, and later signed with Columbia and released another album with them in 1973, named "Piano Man".

Finally a breakthrough for the talented pianist, since the release of his first hit song, "Piano Man", Billy Joel famously became the 6th best selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in America.

He has impressively been included into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in his music career.

Live reviews

Billy Joel is a legendary singer-songwriter and pianist. Since the release his 1973 hit, ‘Piano Man’, Billy Joel has become the USA’s sixth best-selling recording ever. He is currently performing monthly shows at New York’s Madison Square Gardens. These sell-out shows are grand affairs.

As expected, each gig is a sell-out. Each month the crowd gathers, bursting with anticipation. As Billy Joel takes to the piano, a deafening roar of yells, whoops and claps erupts. Despite undertaking a musical residency, Billy is careful to avoid repetition. The set list changes each month and the songwriter freely and spontaneously speaks to the audience between numbers.

April’s set opened with ‘Miami 2017.’ Always a showman, Billy began with a true crowd-pleaser. This track showcased the singer’s powerful and near-faultless vocals, setting the scene for the rest of the evening. This month’s crafted set list demonstrated Billy’s intricate understanding of what makes a good a show. The performer guided his audience through a mixture of old classics, new compositions and inventive covers. Indeed, reflecting on his long career and progressing years, Billy gave an apt rendition of The Beatles' ‘When I'm Sixty-Four.’ The concert finished on a high. The whole crowd exuberantly sang along to ‘Only the Good Die Young’ and were treated to Mark Rivera’s ever-brilliant sax playing.

The atmosphere was electric from the start. The man himself was just amazing. So much energy and humour coupled with a keen insight can't begin to describe the performance from this 70 year old gentleman.

His voice has aged and mellowed to a way that really enhances his songs.

He played a good variety of music spanning all of his long career. From his 80s classics to some of the lesser played, but brilliant deeper music from the late 70s.

When he played the his signature song, Piano Man, you could hear it all the way to Scotland. It was out of this world.

The band were simply brilliant. They are so talented that when one of his group stood up and sang 'Nessun Dorma', you could of heard a pin drop in Wembley Stadium. The resulting applause was like thunder that just rolled on and on.

A really fantastic night out that I will remember for the rest of my life.

The Billy Joel concert 6-2-18 was one truly fabulous show! Loved every minute of it he is ab awesome entertainer and so talented along with the rest of his band, so many talented people on one stage. He keeps it real and gives the crowd what they want with song choices and true life facts!! Everyone in attendance tonight got the please of seeing him perform with his daughter Alexa Ray who is beautiful and talented We also had the pleasure of seeing his ex Christie Brinkley (Alexa's mom) singing Uptown Girl on the jumbo screen!!! When they came back out for the on-core the house was truly rockin' everyone was up on their feet singing and dancing. It is no wonder that he sells out each performance, now in year number five, I will most certainly be at another one of his concerts!!! Love, love, love this concert, don't miss if you ever have the chance to go!!!

There's not much else that can be said about Billy Joel that hasn't already been written. Once again he wowed the fans in Philly, only new thing to add was that this particular night he was also celebrating the birth of his second daughter so he threw out cigars to the crowd! Our beloved Philly Phanactic was even in attendance rockin to the tunes. Although he stopped writing new songs it doesn't seem to matter to his audience. The kids of today still love his music as do us that have been following him for many decades.

My particular favorite of the night was/is when he sang "Goodnight Saigon". My chest vibrates every time I hear the chopper blades leading into the song & then at the conclusion when our Vets take the stage my heart soars with love & gratitude. We all start chanting USA, USA.... need I say more?

All I can add is I that I loved every bit of it!

ronnie-stolzer’s profile image

The concert was amazing. Billy is truly the entertainer! He told a complex story of his life by singing a variety of songs, both his own and other performers'. All the musicians on the stage were fantastic. They could play multiple instruments, sing and entertain to the max. Billy was unbelievable! So full of energy and so talented. I loved this concert.

Some of the people around me got frustrated when he performed other artists' songs. They shouted out that Billy had so many of his own hits that he should use the time to perform his own songs. I felt pleased and happily surprised to be allowed to experience Billy performing so many different genres of music, so I didn't share their frustration. It should be noted that he did perform lots of his greatest hits, more and more towards the end of the concert.

All in all the concert was a wonderful experience.

The show started almost 1/2 hour late, but Billy Joel did not disappoint. The concert went over 2 hours playing to a packed house. Between 20-25 original BJ tunes were performed with a few others we all know and love to sing along with. His daughter Alexa Rae joined him on stage for “Baby Grand” which was nice to see. Each song highlighted the various band members and they were introduced accordingly; all are great musicians and vocalists. We all sang along to Piano Man, his last song of the night. After chanting for an encore, the band came back and played an additional 3 songs capping it off with Billy Joel placing a turkey hat upon his head while belting out “You may be right, I may be crazy...” interjecting a small part of Led Zepplin’s Rock n Roll into the song.

Billy ‘s mantra after many of his tunes: And then we got divorced. Lol.

With the exception of 20 minutes of manure or sewage smell this was an epic night

Got down around 4:30

Got great parking (1st spot two sides protected)

Snagged the last outdoor patio seating at the Hard Rock Cafe

Had onion rings to share, a Waldorf salad and Salmon to share and people watched till it was time to go to the concert

THE SEATS WERE

The concert was amazing

The acoustics were amazing

His voice was 95% of him in his prime

The song set was great and he offered the audience a choose of two songs on about 4 songs and the audience voted with there cheers

At the end of the concert it was slow getting to the car but I threaded thru traffic to a bathroom for Karen as the lineups for women were terrible

Billy was simply stunning and laid on a 2 1/2 hour spectacle that tops anything I've seen. He combined his classics with great banter and interplay with the audience.

From his meandering off into hard days night, through in the jungle and land of hope and glory. He supported his long term roadie through a great rendition of highway to hell and backing vocalist beautifully delivered nessum dorma to the crowds delight.

A night to remember from a true legend, so much so I'm seriously considering a trip to New York to catch the show at the garden.

Thank you Billy, you gave us the best time.

As someone who is just finishing up high school and preparing for college, hearing Vienna made me cry.

"Slow down, you crazy child

You're so ambitious for a juvenile

But then if you're so smart, then tell me

Why are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?

You'd better cool it off before you burn it out

You've got so much to do

And only so many hours in a day"

It made me reflect more on my current mindset about life. I didn't know how much more powerful this song could be when performed live.

Billy Joel smiles while sitting at the piano.

After more than 45 years, the Piano Man is leaving the building.

Billy Joel , 74, has just announced that he will play his final concert as part of his record-shattering residency at New York City’s Madison Square Garden in July 2024.

That means the “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” singer has just 14 more concerts at the Knicks home arena — the last of which will be his 150th at the venue.

And while tickets aren’t available yet for Joel’s last nine Garden gigs, you can score seats for his NYC concerts from June through October this year.

Some are quite cheap too .

At the time of publication, we found a few seats going for as low as $69 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Not a bad price considering the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer that brought the world “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” “Big Shot,” “Only The Good Die Young” and so many more won’t be performing at the venue for much longer.

Want to find out more about the final Joel MSG shows?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Billy Joel’s final Madison Square Garden performances below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Billy Joel concerts outside NYC

Joel isn’t confining himself to just solo gigs in the Big Apple this year.

He’s also embarking on an ongoing co-headlining stadium trek with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks as part of their ‘Two Icons, One Night Tour.’

Here’s when and where you can see the pair live this year.

Joel will also headline at London, GB’s Hyde Park on Friday, July 7.

You can grab tickets for the overseas show here .

Billy Joel history at MSG

Joel’s history with Madison Square Garden dates back all the way to December 1978 when he played the arena for the first time on the heels of the success of his album “The Stranger.”

In the 45 years since, Joel performed at the venue 90 consecutive months since January 2014 and earned MSG’s records for “Most Lifetime Performances By Any Artist,” (currently at 136 shows) as well as “Most Consecutive Performances By Any Artist,” according to ABC 7.

Back in 2006, Joel broke the record for “Most Consecutive Performances By Any Artist” at MSG with 12. Soon after, he beat his own record in January 2015.

Three years after, he performed his 100th show at MSG in July 2018.

Former Governor then Andrew Cuomo declared July 18, 2018 “Billy Joel Day” in the State of New York.

Over the course of his long-standing residency, Joel’s sold 1.6 million tickets.

Will anyone ever topple Joel’s MSG record?

Well, at the time of publication, here are the artists — along with the number of times they’ve played at Madison Square Garden — trailing him:

Elton John  (76 performances)

Phish  (64 performances)

Grateful Dead  (52 performances)

Bruce Springsteen  (49 performances)

Eric Clapton  (37 performances)

The Who  (34 performances)

Madonna  (33 performances)

Rod Stewart  (32 performances)

Neil Diamond   (28 performances)

As of now, Harry Styles has only played Madison Square Garden 22 times.

Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel Announce 2023 Joint Concerts

Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel will hit the road together next year, performing three joint concerts. But according to Wilson Howard, Chairman of Live Nation’s southeast division, the Two Icons, One Night tour will eventually comprise "five to seven shows" (via  Consequence ).

The first performance will take place in Los Angeles on March 10, followed by Arlington, Texas, on April 8 and Nashville on May 19. Tickets for all three announced shows will go on sale on Nov. 11.

"Excited to hit the road with the amazing [Billy Joel]   in 2023," Nicks wrote on Twitter.  No other dates have been announced yet. According to press releases on Joel's website , this is the first time the two artists have shared stages in all three scheduled cities.

Nicks is currently wrapping up a series of fall tour dates with a performance in the city she was born in, Phoenix, on Nov. 5. Joel , meanwhile, is scheduled to continue his Madison Square Garden residency in New York City through the new year, with additional performances slated in Atlanta, and Melbourne and Auckland, New Zealand.

Neither artist has expressed any recent interest in retiring. "I've become very comfortable with that concept of maybe you just don't retire," Joel said in 2019 . "Maybe it just keeps going because people want to keep seeing it. And it's a great job. I have a great band. I play great venues. And I make great money. So what's wrong with that?"

"I’ll never retire," Nicks firmly told Rolling Stone in 2017. "Stand up straight, put on your heels and get out there and do stuff."

Here’s Where to Watch Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden Concert Special Online

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

Quick Answer: Fans can watch the Billy Joel 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special online for free with trials to DirecTV Stream , fuboTV , and Paramount+ with Showtime .

Billy J o el kicked off his legendary Madison Square Garden residency back in 2014. Years later, the music legend celebrated his 100th MSG show at the end of March, with special guests, including Jerry Seinfeld. Now fans who didn’t get to see the Piano Man’s show in person will get another shot at seeing it all online, thanks to an encore of The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special.

“There’s three things that make Billy a genius of music: The voice, the music, the writing of the most beautiful songs,” Jerry Seinfeld told Madison Square Garden’s audience at the show in March. “But there’s another thing about Billy that makes him so unique and so special. It’s that we captured how we all feel living in this particular part of the world, Long Island [and] New York.”

Continued Seinfeld: “He is like the companion that we have gone through our whole lives with. His music is our best friend for our whole life. I don’t even think he can understand how much his music means to us being from where we are.”

After getting cut short by two minutes when it initially aired on April 14 due to what CBS called a “network programming timing error,” the Piano Man’s concert special will air once again — disruption-free — today on the network starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. But for Joel’s fans who don’t have access to a tradition cable package, they can still stream the 100th special online. Read on for our streaming guide.

If you want to watch the encore of Joel’s 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special, you have a few ways you can tune in online.

CBS presents Billy Joel The 100th - Live at Madison Square Garden, a new primetime concert special airing Sunday, April 14

CBS is apologizing for a timing mixup that cut off the final moments of a Billy Joel concert special for many viewers Sunday night.

Viewers in the Eastern and Central time zones missed the final two minutes of Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden when the program cut abruptly to local news telecasts. Joel was singing the final verse of “Piano Man” when the screen went black and then cut to local newscasts.

The special, initially scheduled for 9 p.m. ET Sunday, was pushed back by about a half-hour in the eastern half of the country after the network’s coverage of the Masters golf tournament ran into primetime. A CBS News special report also aired before the start of 60 Minutes .

Social media reaction to the mixup was, unsurprisingly, not kind to CBS. One representative post on X rewrote the chorus of “Piano Man” as, “Sing us a half-song, you’re the Piano Man/Sing us a half-song tonight/’Cause we all heard part of a melody/And CBS producers aren’t bright.”
