  Birmingham Thunderbolts, LLC is a 501-C3 non-profit entity based in Irondale, AL. We were formed in 2005 for the sole purpose of providing the youth in our area the opportunity to compete in travel softball on a national level.

Our players are from all parts of the country. We are a dedicated group of players, coaches and families. We have a private, two field softball complex with Field Turf surfaces, a third private practice field comprised of a traditional clay infield and Bermuda grass outfield, and a 13,000 SF private indoor training facility.

We are always looking for talented players from good families to join our program. If you are interested in learning more about our program, please fill out a Player Registration Form on our website.

Location: 500 Vulcan Drive, Irondale, AL 35210  Complex Information: 2 fields with 100% FieldTurf surfaces and 200-foot fences. Unless it's raining at the time of the game, then we will play on time. Fields drain up 18-inches of rain per hour.  For more info go to  www.fieldturf.com   We have plenty of parking, handicap accessible bathrooms and concessions.  You are welcome to bring your cooler.      COMPLEX RULES:  Shea Brothers Softball Complex is a privately owned, premier fastpitch softball facility.  The Thunderbolts enjoy hosting visitors for tournaments and friendlies.  We respectfully request that all visitors observe the complex rules.  We do not allow pets, tobacco products, gum, sunflower seeds, peanuts, bikes, skateboards, scooters, wall-ballers, etc. on the property.  The Clubhouse and upstairs balcony are reserved for invited guests only.  Children are not allowed in these areas without a parent's direct supervision.  Players and coaches are the only ones permitted on the fields.  Steel cleats are not allowed without prior approval.  For safety and security purposes, parents must not allow small children to roam unsupervised.   All vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas.  Any vehicles parked disorderly, in no parking areas, against yellow curbs or in reserved spaces will be towed without warning and at the owner's expense.  Thunderbolts coaches, parents and players are responsible for enforcement of complex rules and cleanup during and after all events.  Anyone found in violation of complex rules will be removed from the property.  Please help keep our park clean because it is here for your enjoyment.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.  We look forward to seeing you at the park.      Directions to Shea Brothers Softball Complex 500 Vulcan Drive, Irondale, AL 35210 From I-20 take exit 133 Take Crestwood Blvd to 25th Street South (Simply Fashions Sign at corner) Take 25th Street So. to Vulcan Drive, turn right, fields on your left.

The Alabama Thunderbolts 2025 is an "A" class travel softball team based in Fairhope, Alabama with players from all over the Southeast.  We play a competitive schedule in the Summer and fall seasons. ​

Club News: Birmingham Thunderbolts Named 2022 NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year

Birmingham Thunderbolts (18U) were voted the 2022 NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year , the Association announced on Monday afternoon.

The Thunderbolts, under the direction of head coach Rocky Thompson , captured the 2022 PGF 18U Premier National Championship, held in Irvine, Calif. After a 2-1-1 record in pool play, the Thunderbolts rattled off six victories, including a 4-1 win over Select Fastpitch in the title game ( click HERE to read a recap of the championship game).

Thompson, along with assistants Giselle Juarez , Shane Cahalan , Ted Flannery , Taylor Liguori and Hannah Borden , steered the Thunderbolts to a 32-10-3 mark in Premier play.

The team also won the Show Me the Money title and finished top three at the Top Club Invitational. Under the staff’s tutelage, three players earned 2022 PGF All-America honors and two more generated 2023 PGF Futures All-America recognition.

Extra Inning Softball reached out to Coach Thompson today to ask how he found about about the honor.

“Well, it popped up first on my Twitter feed and my reaction was, ‘Wow, interesting!'” he said in his typically humble and understated way. “Then Mrs. Joanne Lane (of the NFCA) before several text messages started popping through.”

Coach Thompson explained the award was a group effort and not just one person’s–or staff’s–accomplishments.

“I am proud of so many individuals,” he continued, “but also understanding this accomplishment has nothing to do with me; all the credit goes to Richard Shea who started the organization, to all the former players that put the Thunderbolts in position to be nationally known, the current players who understand the standard and are continuing to uphold everything that Birmingham Bolts Premier stands for as well as all our coaches who volunteer their time developing, counseling, recruiting, managing and some being parents!” “I’m just like a dedicated worker getting the stage ready for performance; it’s not about me… everyone else made being recognize possible. I just want to stay consistent and am still trying to figure out what is right, but I am grateful and humble for everything God has granted me with and who he has surrounded around me.”

The Birmingham Thunderbolts (18U), a representative of the South Region, was joined by Churchville Lightning (Md.), PA Pennsbury Gems, 14U Texas Glory Naudin and Lady Magic (Calif.) as Travel Ball Regional Coaching Staff of the Year recipients.

Winners are voted on by travel ball member head coaches.

Thompson and his staff will be honored at the annual NFCA Awards Brunch, Dec. 10 at the 2022 NFCA Convention in San Antonio.

The NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) is the professional organization for fastpitch softball coaches. Known for its highly-regarded  coaching awards , the NFCA also educates and supports softball coaches on a variety of different levels: from  webinars  to legal counsel, to in-person  events  and the  National Convention .
