Sightseeing in Copenhagen

Take a 60 minutes harbour and canal tour onboard one of the blue netto-boats..

Sit down and make yourself comfortable. See Copenhagen from the water front and enjoy the scenery and the sights which we pass on the tour, while our guide tells you in Danish, English, and German about the sights.

Autumn/Winter (October-March): We sail with glass roofed heated boats.

Map of canaltour

The tour starts from Holmens Church. We pass the old Stock-Exchange and sail through a canal called "Børsgraven". We arrive at Nyhavn, a pictoresque canal with atmosphere, many old houses and sailships. Nyhavn is one of the oldest parts of the Copenhagen harbour and dates back to 1673. At the end of Nyhavn there is a large anchor, which is a monument for 1600 Danish sailors, who lost their lives during the second world war.

We now approach the area of Holmen which was the naval base of Copenhagen for more than 300 years. Holmen is situated on 4 islands. On Frediriksholm we have The Danish Film School, The Drama School, The Academy Of Rhythmic Music and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Architect School. To the left you can see "Dokøen" (the Dock Island) and "Frederiksholm" and to the right the Arsenal Island. We sail past some of the 250 years old bastions or powder magazines, one of which – Frederiks Bastion – has been restored and converted into a small art gallery. Leaving the area of Holmen you can see Nyholm, the fourth island of Holmen, where there is still a naval college. To the right you can see the old Mast Crane from 1748, which was previously a well known landmark at the entrance to the Copenhagen harbour. Finally you can see the Battery Sixtus built in 1736 – 1744.

We are on our way to The little Mermaid illustrating one of the fairy-tales written by the Danish fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. We pass the royal residence called the Amalienborg Palace and enter the picturesque Christianshavn’s Canal with Our Saviour’s Church with the famous, twisted spire. Leaving Christianshavn’s Canal we see the Royal Library on the water front, cross the inner harbour. We enter Frederiksholm´s Canal with the Royal Arsenal Museum and the National Museum. To the left after the bridge you can see the old Fishmarket and the Thorvaldsen Art Museum. On our way back to Holmen´s Church we sail past Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish parliament.

The best canal tours and boat trips in Copenhagen

With the word harbour (havn) incorporated into its Danish name (København) , Copenhagen naturally has a strong connection with its waterways.

There are lots of different boat tours to try in Copenhagen

Many of these lead right past some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, including postcard-perfect Nyhavn and the famous Little Mermaid statue.

There are loads of guided canal tours and boat trips to enjoy, and you can even rent your own boat for a bit of self-guided exploration.

Seeing the city from the water can help you find your bearings before diving into the maze of historic streets on foot.

Options for boat trips in Copenhagen range wildly, from solar-powered picnic boats and classic canal cruises to sailing ship adventures and solo kayak trips.

Use this guide to choose the one that will leave you in ‘oar’ of the Danish capital!

Quick take: our top three Copenhagen boat tours

If you’re short of time, we recommend the classic boat trip from Nyhaven that takes in all the main sites in a comfortable boat with large glass windows.

We also really like this smaller electric boat trip that seats just seven people for a more personal, intimate experience – and it’s eco-friendly too.

And for a chilled, relaxing trip, you can’t beat this tour of scenic Furesøen Lake on a lovely antique wooden boat.

Where do the boat tours depart from?

Copenhagen’s most popular type of boat tour is a trip along the canals. Most of these tours leave from the touristy Nyhavn area and from Gammel Strand, near Christiansborg Castle.

Others run from Ofelia Plads near Amalienborg Palace (it’s just around the corner from Nyhavn).

Canal and boat tours in Copenhagen

Havnebussen boats, which are part of the city’s public transport system, can be boarded at several stops between Refshaleøen and Teglholmen, giving you a cheap alternative to the organised tours.

Just bear in mind that these are very much ‘local’ boat services – you won’t get any info on what you’re sailing past.

Do the boat trips run all year?

Boat trips are popular and get booked up quickly, so it’s wise to book tickets online in advance, though some tours can also be booked on the spot.

The Havnebussen (Harbour bus) public boats don’t need to be booked in advance, but you will need to have a ticket, travel card  or a  Copenhagen Card: Discover  to use them. You can also buy tickets onboard, but only with cash.

Tips for taking a Copenhagen boat tour

  • Check the weather forecast and always bring an extra layer – it can get chilly here, even in the summer.
  • Add sunscreen and a hat if you’re hitting the water during the summer months.
  • Consider renting your own boat for a bit more freedom – you can safely rent certain types of boats in Copenhagen, even if you have no previous experience.
  • Don’t forget to book in advance – especially in high season.
  • Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch on the water. Several of the tours we’ve listed below allow you to bring your own drinks and food.

What’s new for 2024?

Increasingly small electric boats are gaining popularity, such as this one .

They provide a more intimate experience as well as personal interaction with the captain. So you can ask questions on the way and really enjoy what you’re seeing.

There will always be a place for the large glass-windowed tour boats, where you can walk around the boat – and they do you great views of the city.

But increasingly people are opting for smaller, more personal electric boat trips that limit their impact on the environment.

Guided canal and harbour tours

Touring Copenhagen’s canals is so popular that a whole industry has built up around it, with several different providers offering a multitude of tours, each aimed at taking visitors to see different parts of the city. These are some of the best.

The classic harbour tour

This budget-friendly one-hour tour  takes you around the canals and the harbour to see the city’s best bits.

Guides speak Danish and English (other languages are also available on specific departures) and provide a bit of background about the city as you sail past famous landmarks.

Tours start from Nyhavn, and will take you past highlights like Christiansborg Palace, the opera house, the Little Mermaid statue and majestic Amalienborg Palace.

The tours run all year round and ponchos are included, just in case it rains!

The extended harbour tour

If you want a longer trip that takes in a few lesser-known sites, such as the up-and-coming area of area of Nordhavn, this extended harbour is a good bet.

The trip leaves from Ved Stranden and takes in all the main sites too, plus some of the newer trendy regenerated areas to the north and south of the centre.

It lasts one hour, 45 minutes and runs from June to mid-September.

The eco-friendly harbour tour

This electric boat trip leaves from Ved Stranden and takes in the city’s main sights on a small boat.

The boat seats just seven people, so it’s a more personal experience – and has heated seats and blankets for colder days.

The knowledgeable skipper gets top marks for the witty and fun commentary, plus the interesting facts about the sites you pass and their history.

Hey Captain boat trips

Putting the focus firmly on good-old Danish  hygge (you’ll get warm drinks and blankets to keep you cosy), this is a much more intimate boat tour with room for just 12 guests at a time.

It’s a sociable boat trip where you’re encourage to chat to fellow passengers and the captain, so ideal for solo travellers.

Running from mid-March to mid-December, this two-hour boat trip sets out from Ofelia Plads near Amalienborg Palace, sailing past all the harbour highlights, plus some hidden gems too.

It takes in all the harbour highlights, as well as some up-and-coming areas and a few hidden gems too.

Havnebussen

Havnebussen, or ‘the Harbour Bus’ is part of Copenhagen’s public transport system, just like the regular buses on land. This means you can travel with the same kind of tickets you’d use on ordinary buses.

Riding the harbour bus isn’t really the same as a guided tour, but it does offer a cheap, alternative way to get from A to B around the harbour, while still enjoying some of its attractions along the way.

The best routes for sightseers are #991 and #992. They run in opposite directions, but both pass the opera house and Nyhavn.

Boat tour of Bagsværd Lake

Escape the city for a trip on the wooden Baadfarten boats, which sail along the scenic Bagsværd Lake, just outside Copenhagen (May to August).

The hour-long tour of the lake takes in lush lakeside scenery, including parkland, woods and fields.

Your ticket also allows you to stop off en-route, so you can spend as long as you like at the art exhibitions at Sophienholm, and continue your trip on a later boat.

Wooden sailing ship tours

Looking to explore the harbour in style? Then be sure to visit Copenhagen in high season (late June to the beginning of August), when you can book a harbour tour aboard a real wooden sailing ship.

Harbour bridges will open to let the tall ship pass as you sail through the harbour.  Or you can opt for a full two-hour sailing cruise aboard the beautiful wooden ship.

These tours aren’t cheap (expect to pay around 420 DKK per adult) and you’ll need to book in advance – check the   United Sailing Ships website for exact sailing times.

Lake tours on a wooden boat

And if you fancy cruising some of the waterways out of the city, this lovely wooden boat dating from the 1890s tours round Denmark’s deepest lake.

Take a boat trip on Denmark's deepest lake, just outside Copenhagen

The boat makes the two-hour journey round Furesøen Lake several times a day, stopping at the lake beach at Furesøbad, the castle of Næsseslottet and the Old Mill en route.

So you can hop-off when you want to explore the sights along the way, then catch the next boat onwards.

The boats leave from Holte Havn, 20 minutes outside of the city, and run from early may to mid-September.

Boats for rent in Copenhagen

If you don’t like the idea of setting sail with other tourists and would rather hit the water on your own, renting a boat is a great option.

Goboats can be rented in Copenhagen, even if you have no sailing experience

There are a few different low-powered boats that you can captain yourself, and although there are age limits in place, no prior experience is necessary.

You can also rent a private boat with a captain from Refshaleøen, or jump in a kayak instead.

Some of the most popular boat rentals in Copenhagen are GoBoats . These dinky, solar-powered boats, based at Islands Brygge, let you go wherever you fancy along Copenhagen’s system of canals, with no experience or special licence needed.

You’ll be shown how to drive the boats before you set off and provided with life jackets and blankets (in case it’s cold out on the water!)

There’s a little bench table in the middle of these boats, and you’re free to bring along your own food and drink. So, pack a picnic basket for an enjoyable day on the water.

The boats hold up to 8 people and cost the same whether there are two of you or 8 (from 549 DKK) – so the larger the group the cheaper the cost per person.

Duffy boats

If you’re travelling with a group of friends or your family, then you might want hire your own boat and captain to take you comfortably around the harbour.

The eco-friendly, electric Duffy boats take up to 11 guests at a time, and are a great option if you want a bit more space and the freedom to explore a little more.

They run year-round with heaters in the winter, plus comfy sofas and tables so you can relax and enjoy the view.

The boats cost from 190 DKK for a one-hour trip, including the captain.

FriendShips

A good alternative to GoBoats (see above), FriendShips electric boats can be rented from Christianshavn, so you’re just around the corner from Christiania and the opera house.

Renting for two hours (around 900 DKK) will give you enough time to take in a few of the capital’s big sights while sailing quietly through the water.

Kayak Republic

Wanna keep those biceps in shape during your city break? Then you should consider skipping the boats altogether and jumping in a kayak.

Kayak Republic has stable, easy-to-use kayaks to rent for 195 DKK an hour, or 295 DKK for a double kayak (May to September).

Alternatively, you can join a two-hour city tour around the canals of Copenhagen, or an evening tour to watch the sunset (around 395 DKK).

Top tips for saving money on boat trips in Copenhagen

  • Kayak for free. Green Kayak has double sit-on kayaks that you can use for free. All you need to do is to pick up litter from the harbour while you paddle, weigh it and share it on social media!
  • Buy a Copenhagen Card. The Copenhagen Card: Discover includes unlimited use of the harbour buses, a classic harbour tour and the Baadfarten boat tours. So if you’re planning a lot of watery trips, it could save you a fortune. Check our guide to see if a Copenhagen Card could save you money.
  • Go with a group of friends. With trips like GoBoats, you pay for the boat no matter how many people are on it. So if you can take 7 other people, you’ll pay as little as £8 each for an hour’s trip.

Are Copenhagen boat trips environment-friendly?

Most boat trips have a negative effect on the environment, however in recent years boat companies in Copenhagen have made big efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

The old diesel Havnebussen, for example, have been replaced with electric boats, and all the harbour buses are now nitrogen oxide- and particle-neutral.

Both FriendShips and the Duffy Boats are electric, while the silent GoBoats are solar-powered. However, the most environmentally-friendly way to take to the water is, of course, is by kayak!

Are Copenhagen boat trips safe?

Yes, boat trips round Copenhagen Harbour are safe. All boat trips provide life jackets for passengers, though there’s no obligation to wear them.

Make sure you stay seated while the boat is moving, and be aware of the safety procedures and where the emergency exits are.

Are Copenhagen boat trips accessible?

Most boat trips are problematic for those with limited mobility, and the boats that do the classic Copenhagen harbour tours are not suitable for wheelchair users.

The harbour buses, however, are wheelchair-accessible, with flat landing stages and ramp access to the boat. They can get very crowded though, and there’s limited space on board for wheelchairs.

Can I get food and drink on board the boats?

There are no facilities for buying food and drink on board the classic harbour boats, but there’s no problem with taking your own.

Many of the tours start and end at Nyhavn, where there’s no shortage of places to eat and drink before or after your tour. For ideas on where to eat in Copenhagen on a budget, click here .

boat tour copenhagen nyhavn

Certificate of Excellence 2014-2024

boat tour copenhagen nyhavn

The Canal Tours are probably the best and most beautiful way to see a lot of Copenhagen in an hour.

Part of the tour goes through the area of Christianshavn where many people live on boats in the canals. Christianshavn is named after king Christian IV who expanded Copenhagen with this beautiful area in the early 1600’s. It is one of the most beautiful, popular and expensive neighbourhoods in the city.

In the open harbour area you will pass the last Danish submarine that was retired in 2005. You will also see the modern opera house and get a beautiful view of the royal palace, Amalienborg, from the sea.

Finally, you will see the world famous little mermaid statue from the boat. The statue was made in 1913 by the artist Edvard Eriksen to commemorate the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It is very small. The Danes do not think that much of it. But internationally it has become a symbol of Copenhagen. There are always tourists taking pictures of it.

The statue has often been vandalised by people with political messages. She has been beheaded several times. She has been dressed in a burka as a protest against islamisation of Denmark and she has been vandalised with red paint as a protest against whale hunting.

How to get on a canal tour in Copenhagen

Canal Tour

Hamlet Tours does not operate canal tours in Copenhagen and is not associated with any of the operators of the canal tours. The canal tour is included in our  GRAND INNER CITY TOUR  but if you just want to go on the canal tour without joining our city tour, here is our unbiased advice:

There are two main operators of the canal tours.  Nettobådene  costs 60 DKK (8 euros) per person and  Stromma  costs 80 DKK (10 euros) per person They are both reliable and trusted operators. Stromma has more departures.

The ticket booth for Stromma is right in the end of the harbour in Nyhavn. (In the end that is nearest to the city). It is very easy to find. The ticket booth for Nettobådene is on the right hand side of the harbour (as you look towards the water) two hundred meters from the bottom of the harbour.

Unless you are a large group, our recommendation is to simply show up and buy a ticket in Nyhavn. The boats depart every 20 minutes in the summer and the operators always make sure there are enough boats for all the visitors. Even in high season on a sunny day, you can almost always get on the next boat.

In the off-season, it is a good idea to check the departure times on the website of one of the operators. And if you have a very large group, we recommend to make a reservation in advance.

What if it is raining?

The canal tours still operate if the weather is bad. But you should ask if there is a roof top on the boat. It is not always the case. The operators usually hand out ponchos if you are in an open boat and it starts raining. But it is really not that much fun 🙂

Explore Copenhagen’s Colorful & Historic Harbor

Nyhavn is one of Copenhagen's most beloved attractions, and with good reason! The picturesque houses, cozy cafes, and bustling atmosphere create an unforgettable experience. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, admire the historical facades, and enjoy the harbor's unique vibe.

What can I do in Nyhavn?

Today, Nyhavn continues to be one of the city’s most vibrant areas. Smell the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingling with the salty air, hear the gentle lapping of the water against the wooden boats, and enjoy a great meal as you soak up the sights and sounds.

Enjoy the Water on a Classic Canal Tour

One of the best ways to experience Nyhavn and Copenhagen is by taking a canal tour. Join Stromma’s Classic Canal Tour directly from Nyhavn and enjoy a guided tour of the city's most famous landmarks, such as the Little Mermaid, the Opera House, and Amalienborg Palace.

Fun fact: All Stromma’s canal boats are named after characters from Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairytales.

More to Explore

If you're interested in art and history, visit Kunsthal Charlottenborg, a contemporary art museum that showcases local and international artists. Craving a delicious lunch or a good cup of coffee? Their cafe is a delightful spot.

When is the Best Time to Visit Nyhavn?

For picture-perfect photos, go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Want to feel the full buzz of the harbor? Head over during lunchtime or stay late to enjoy the restaurants and bars. Nyhavn gets especially lively on sunny days!

Summer Jazz & Cozy Christmas Markets

Nyhavn has a special soundtrack in the summer, as live jazz concerts often fill the air! And if you're visiting in December, the Christmas market transforms the harbor into a festive wonderland, complete with twinkling lights and the scent of mulled wine.

The History of Nyhavn

Nyhavn, meaning "New Harbor" in Danish, was constructed by King Christian V from 1670 to 1675 and served as a passage from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv. The harbor itself was excavated from 1671 to 1673 by Swedish prisoners of war.

The oldest house in Nyhavn is No. 9, dating back to 1681. This historic building stands as a testament to the area's heritage and has remained virtually untouched for over 300 years—even its original facade is intact!

Nyhavn's early days were a bit rowdier, known for its sailors, pubs, and lively atmosphere. It was a bustling commercial port packed with ships and sailors from all corners of the world.

Nyhavn’s Changing Role

A dark chapter in the harbor’s history is when it played a historical role in Denmark's involvement in the slave trade during the colonial era. The harbor served as a center for trade activities, including the importation of sugar and other goods produced by enslaved individuals in Danish colonies.

As ships grew larger, the commercial traffic to Nyhavn naturally died out as the ships were no longer able to dock, and a shift towards smaller vessels began. The transition away from large commercial ships also impacted the area's atmosphere and contributed to its evolution into the leisure-oriented space it is today.

The Story Behind the Colors

Nyhavn's iconic colors—those vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges—aren’t just for show! They have both a practical and an aesthetic purpose. Traditionally, different-colored houses helped sailors easily find their way back after a night out. They're also a beautiful reminder of classic Danish architectural styles. It also connects modern-day Copenhagen to its historical roots.

The yellow color is often referred to as “Nyboder yellow” and is associated with the facades of the houses in Nyboder, an area with old naval barracks dating back to the 17th century. This particular shade of yellow is very characteristic of Copenhagen, and you will come across it in different areas across the city.

Home of Hans Christian Andersen

Nyhavn holds a special place in literary history as the former home of the beloved fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. He lived in several houses along the harbor, including Nyhavn 18, 20, and 67.

Some of his most famous stories, like The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Pea, were penned right there in number 20! A plaque on the facade of Nyhavn 20 commemorates his residence there.

Watch the city’s parks come to life after the drab and dreary days of January and February with Spring flowers bursting out of the ground full of colour and fragrance – Look out for the cherry blossom!

Temperatures can still be on the chilly side so you’ll need to dress in layers but Spring showers aren’t much of a problem.

Summer in Copenhagen

Copenhagen doesn’t get uncomfortably hot allowing you to make the most of the long, warm Summer days that last until 10pm.

The city is alive with festivals and events at this time of year including Friday Rock in Tivoli Gardens, Roskilde Festival, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Pride and the Copenhagen Cooking and Food Festival – and that’s just for starters!

Life is lived outside during Summer so be sure to visit the harbour baths and Amagar Beach Park in-between your cultural museum days.

The temperature drops from mid September with fall the wettest season in Copenhagen but with the colour-changing leaves putting on as much of a show as Tivoli’s Halloween display it’s still a great time to sightsee the city.

Winter in Copenhagen

Wrap up warm if visiting Copenhagen in winter – You can expect lots of rain as well as snow but the festivities of December will give you a warm inner glow as you peruse the Christmas Markets and delight in Christmas at Tivoli.

After Christmas, once the festive lights come down, and New Year celebrations are over the city loses its appeal somewhat unless you practise the Danish art of hygge!

Copenhagen can be enjoyed all through the year with each season offering visitors something different. There really isn’t a best time to visit Copenhagen , as they all have their unique charm.

Top Things to Do in Copenhagen

Nyhavn harbour.

The iconic waterfront with its colourful 17th and 18th century buildings and historical ships that you see in images mentioning Copenhagen is called Nyhavn Harbour.

This is the bustling yet charming canal and entertainment district full of bars, cafes, and restaurants, as you walk past these former townhouses, look out for numbers 20, 67, and 18 as fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen lived at each of these properties.

Canal Tour of Copenhagen

What better way to explore the city than from the water? Board your sightseeing canal boat and take a one-hour guided tour around the idyllic harbours and along the canals past some of Copenhagen’s most iconic sights including The Opera House, Amalienborg Palace, The Little Mermaid Statue, Christiansborg Palace, the Black Diamond Library, and more.

Note – If you have a Copenhagen Card your canal tour will depart from the harbour at Ved Stranden, just across the street from Christiansborg Palace.

Tivoli Gardens

Fun can be had all year long at Tivoli Gardens, the second oldest amusement park in the world and the place that inspired Walt Disney to start Disney World.

In the Summer, along with trying out both the nostalgic and modern thrill-seeker rides, you can enjoy a boat ride on the lake and admire the blooming flowers but it’s at Christmas time that Tivoli really blooms with the pleasure gardens taking on a magical atmosphere with hot cocoa, ice-skating, and carousel rides.

Tivoli Gardens generally has something for everyone – If you’re not into rides it doesn’t matter, go and admire the architecture, the gardens, and check out the live music events that take place daily. And Tivoli Garden is also included in your Copenhagen City Card .

National Museum of Denmark

Step inside Denmark’s largest museum of cultural history as you explore the Danish culture as well as foreign cultures whether you join one of the guided tours or make your own way around the museum exploring the Stone Age, Viking Age, and on through the Renaissance age to the modern-day.

If you have kids, be sure to visit the Children’s Museum which is housed within the National Museum, here youngsters can learn Danish history through hands-on exhibitions.

Torvehallerne Market

Get your taste-buds in a frenzy as you peruse the edible items on offer at the gourmet urban covered market .

More than 80 shops/stalls can be found across two buildings selling fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, cheese, meat, and other Danish specialities including desserts and beverages with a selection of outdoor vendors too.

Rosenborg Castle and the King’s Garden

Step inside the royal chambers of the Renaissance Rosenborg castle built by King Christian IV of Denmark in the 17 th century and see Denmark’s crown jewels and other royal art treasures as you move around the Royal chambers. If you’re visiting Copenhagen in Spring-Summer, be sure to visit the King’s Garden too to admire the flowers in full bloom.

Amalienborg Palace & the Changing Of The Guards

Learn about Denmark’s monarchs, past and present as you move through the opulent Rococo interiors of Amalienborg Palace, the Winter residence of the current royal family.

Don’t miss the changing of the guards ceremony which takes place daily. Dressed similarly to London’s Buckingham Palace guards but wearing blue instead of red, the Danish Royal guards march from Rosenborg Castle at 11.30am to Amalienborg Palace for the 12.00 ceremony.

Christiansborg Palace /Danish Parliament

Located on the islet of Slotsholmen, Christiansborg Palace is the seat of the Danish Parliament today, but used to be the home of the Danish Royal Family before they relocated to Amalienborg Palace after several fires.

Visitors can see 800 years of history as they move through the Royal Reception Rooms including The Great Hall and The Tapestries to The Royal Stables, The Royal Kitchen, the Chapel, plus the palace ruins and Christiansborg Tower.

Church of Our Saviour

One of the most famous churches in the whole of Denmark due to its iconic serpentine spire aka helix spire, visitors can climb the 400 steps of the external winding staircase on this beautiful baroque church in the Christianshavn neighbourhood to take in the panoramic views over the city.

The Round Tower

Europe’s oldest astronomical observatory, the still-functioning ‘Round Tower’ was built in the 17 th century by Christian IV of Denmark. If you love panoramic views but are not able-bodied enough to manage the 400 steps of the Church of Our Saviour, visit here instead as there’s an  internal spiral ramp that leads to the tower’s viewing platform.

Day trips from Copenhagen

If you’re in Copenhagen for long enough, be sure to take a day trip to one of the beautiful castles whether you join an organised trip or make your own way there using public transport.

Frederiksborg Castle

Located 40km Northwest of Copenhagen, this famous fairytale-like castle sits on 3 islets and dates back to the 17 th century when it was built for King Christian IV.

Visitors can explore inside and outside the stunning renaissance castle with baroque gardens and even take a boat trip on the Castle Lake.

Kronborg Castle

Located on the Northeast coast in Helsingør, 46.6km North of Copenhagen, Kronborg Castle is another fairytale-like renaissance castle.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based at this same castle and every June-August Hamlet Live takes place – A must see if you’re a Shakespeare fan.

Where to eat in Copenhagen

The Mad & Kaffe chain is perfect for breakfast or brunch – Mix and match exactly what you want to eat from a wide choice of items (fruit, yogurt, cheeses, meats, breads, pastries, oatmeal etc) and pay based on the number of items.

For lunch, head to Aamanns 1921 and enjoy traditional smørrebrød (an open-faced sandwich) with a twist, this restaurant experimenting with unique flavour combinations.

At the end of the day, have dinner in the charming basement of Restaurant Cofoco, a popular  restaurant close to Tivoli Gardens that serves up small places (meze style) of Nordic cuisine.

Where to stay in Copenhagen

For travellers who are planning to spend their time sightseeing, the city centre (Nyhavn district) is an ideal place to stay in Copenhagen with Tivoli Park and the Little Mermaid statue all within walking distance.

We recommend a stay at the upscale boutique Hotel Skt. Annæ which is just 1 street back from the iconic quayside, located in a historic 17 th century building, with all the top attractions within a short walking distance, it ensures a comfortable stay.
