Flam Travel Guide

A Local's Guide to Flam and the Aurlandsfjord region!

How to get from Bergen to Flam (and the fjords)

Norway, also known as the Land of Midnight Sun, is famous for its stunning fjords, magnificent mountains, and alluring skies. As such, you can find Norwegian fjords all over the country from the southern coast to the northern Arctic belt, but a handful of them truly stand out above the rest. The western parts of Norway boast the most beautiful fjords in the world, which is why you might be eager to get from Bergen to Flam for your trip!

Flåm is where you can find one of the best fjords in Norway (in my opinion), and also where I grew up!

A lot of tourists visit Norway for 3 reasons: to ride the world’s most beautiful train ride, witness the magic of Northern lights (Aurora Borealis), and sail/ cruise through the remarkable fjords. Did you know that 2 of these can be covered just by visiting Flam ? The Flåmsbana train journey and the UNESCO recognised Nærøyfjord! Flåm is the getaway to the most beautiful areas in Norway and a great starting point to explore the fjords.

Side note : it *is* possible to see the Northern Lights in Flåm as well, but this is quite rare.

One of the most frequent questions that I get asked about Norway relates to ‘how to get from Bergen to Flam’. I grew up in Aurland (just 10 minutes from Flam) and currently live in Bergen. Hence, I think I am quite well suited to answer this question! As I have myself travelled from Bergen to Flam more times than I can count and by using different modes of transport, I think I will be able to do justice to this query.

To be honest, the best mode of transport between Bergen and Flåm is highly subjective . It depends on what kind of scenery you are looking for and what amount of time you have in hand. Below, I have listed down all the ways to get from Bergen to Flam (and Flam to Bergen). Each has its own pros and cons; thus, you will have to weigh in everything before deciding how you want to get to Flam.

How to get from Bergen to Flam

Looking for the simple answer? There are 5 different ways to get from Bergen to Flam. Yes, you read that right! After telling you that the distance between Bergen and Flam is only 170 kilometres, I can understand that this is a little surprising.

Since Flam is a highly frequented place, more and more travel options have popped up, with an increasing number of tourists year after year. Though I have highlighted all the ways to get from Bergen to Flam below, the same options apply if you want to travel in reverse as well (except the tours). For your convenience, I have also mentioned all the official websites where you can make your bookings to travel from Bergen to Flam!

Bergen to Flam by train

Total journey time : 3.5 hours Where to book : Vy website

If you are looking for the most scenic way to get from Bergen to Flam, I recommend travelling via train without a blink of an eye. The train is not only the easiest mode of transport to book but is also equipped with comfortable seating, clean restrooms, and large passenger windows. The only catch is, you have to switch trains at Myrdal, before continuing on to Flåm down the Flåm valley.

The first leg of the journey is from Bergen to Myrdal, the mountain station. This train ride is around 2 hours long. It is from Myrdal that you catch the famed Flamsbana Railway all the way to Flam. The Flam Railway ride time is about 1 hour.

The train tickets from Bergen to Flam sell out really fast, especially during the peak travel season (summer, mainly from mid-June to early August). So, it will be best if you make your bookings 2-3 months before your arrival (the website linked above usually release tickets around 3 months in advance). You can book your tickets from Norway’s largest (and main) train company, Vy.

A note on Vy : Formerly known as Norges Statsbaner (NSB), NSB and Nettbuss have now joined hands to become one company, named Vy. This means you can book both train and bus tickets on the same website.

As mentioned above, part of the train journey from Bergen to Flam is on the Flam Railway, where you will see the changing landscapes, cascading waterfalls, green pastures, and colourful wooden houses along the Flåm Valley, all from the comfort of your train window. Flamsbana is the world’s steepest train ride and takes you from high mountains down to the fjords. It is Norway’s #1 tourist attraction with good reason, and one of the top things to do in Flåm .

Believe me, after having experienced this marvellous journey; you will forget the hassle of switching trains at Myrdal (Myrdal is a very small station, so to be honest, it isn’t much hassle at all).

Along the Flåm Railway you will find Vatnahalsen Hotel. Head this way to read my review .

Bergen to Flam by bus

Total journey time : 3 hours Where to book : Vybuss (train, then bus) or Nor-way (direct)

Getting from Bergen to Flam (or Flåm to Bergen) by bus is the second most scenic mode of transport after the train ride. The bus has comfortable seats, excellent wi-fi, charging points, and (of course) seatbelts – note that these are mandatory to wear, and will keep you nice and safely in your seat.

You don’t even have to make any bus switches between Bergen and Flåm, which might make this a better option over the train. Especially if you have already booked return tickets with the Flåm Railway during your stay in Flåm.

All you have to do is sit back, relax, and admire the scenery passing by. The buses have big glass windows from where you can watch the changing landscapes.

The bus route from Bergen to Flam is via several tunnels (over 30 of them, actually!), and you will see charming villages, mountain ranges, and incredible lakes while on the drive. You can book your bus tickets from Bergen to Flam with Nor-Way Bussekspress. They have one departure a day, and their booking interface is quite easy to understand.

You can also make the bus bookings with Nettbuss, which is now called Vy, as mentioned above. However, when you book your bus tickets with Vy, you actually travel from Bergen to Voss via a train (which is so weird and a little annoying), and then switch buses to travel onwards to Flam. So, make sure to book in advance with Nor-Way Bussekspress to avoid all the switching hassle.

road and mountains in norway

Bergen to Flam by car

Total journey time : 2.5 to 3 hours Where to book : Europcar or Rentcars

If you fancy driving from Bergen to Flam all by yourself, you can rent a car from the center or airport of Bergen, as there are several car rentals available at Bergen airport and the city centre. The car route is equally scenic as that of the bus (for obvious reasons), but in addition, you get the flexibility to stop anywhere in between, take your time along the windy roads, and even make detours to nearby areas.

Please note , however, that stopping along the road to take photos is not okay. Please make sure you are safely pulled over before you start snapping away. And only use your emergency lights in actual emergencies.

From Bergen airport or the city centre, start by following directions for Åsane or Arna and then get onto the E16 highway that will take you all the way to Flam (follow signs to Voss along E16). Voss is located about an hour before you reach Flåm, and this is also the last place before Flåm where you can visit the Norwegian Vinmonopolet. You know, the only place to buy bottles of wine.. So if you want to enjoy a glass of red from your hotel balcony in Flåm , make sure to stop in Voss along the way.

If you are self-driving anywhere in Norway, you need to stay up-to-date on the information about road conditions or road blocks due to landslides, tunnel closures, or other incidents. You can find all this information on the Norwegian Road Directory website . Bookmark this website before your trip and check the road conditions daily.

Fun fact : Checking the Vegvesen website is very common when driving in western Norway, as there are landslides, accidents and tunnel closures more often than you’d think. However, when I told my friend who lives in Kristiansand that we should check the website before our drive to Oslo, he laughed in my face. The roads in eastern Norway are much more straight-forward.

Also, it might be worth noting that we drive on the right side of the road in Norway, that wearing seat belts are mandatory, we give the right of the way to pedestrians, and that you should never exceed the speed limits on windy roads (or anywhere, really).

Bergen to Flam by boat

Total journey time : 5.5 to 6 hours Where to book : Norled

What better way to see the fjords than travel on the fjords? The express boats from Bergen to Flam operate only in the summers, so if you are travelling in the high season, you can do just that.

This beautiful journey will take you out of the Bergen city center towards the coast, before heading back into the fjords. The journey takes you into the Sognefjord and then all the way up and across its smaller branch, the Aurlandsfjord. At the end of the Aurlandsfjord, you will find Flåm.

The journey from Bergen to Flam by boat is certainly longer than travelling by train, bus or car, but it is worthwhile if you have the time – it is quite a beautiful experience, and you get to see the entire Sognefjord along the way.

Currently, just one express boat service operates the boats from Bergen to Flam, named Norled (linked above). They have one departure daily from April to September, and then just one return. The boat starts from Bergen in the morning and returns from Flam in the afternoon. As always, book the tickets in advance to get a confirmed reservation – I’m sure you know by now, but the fjords can get busy.

Join a tour from Bergen

The final way to get from Norway’s second largest city to the fjords is to join one of the great tours available to travellers.

Many tour operators have packages from Bergen to see the fjords in Flam. Companies like GoFjords and FjordTours have tour packages that start from Bergen and take you to Flam, along with lots of sightseeing and activities on the route. If you feel that booking and planning the journey entirely by yourself is time-consuming and involves a lot of hassle, you can book one such tour with them. Although being a bit expensive, these tours are certainly a great way to see the fjords!

FjordTours’ Norway in a Nutshell is one such tour that takes you from Bergen to Myrdal by train, Myrdal to Flåm on the Flamsbana train, along the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord on the cruise from Flam to Gudvangen, and then back to Bergen in a bus. I strongly feel that booking this journey separately by yourself will save you a lot of money. The Norway in a Nutshell tour does exactly that, so why not just book it yourself (they do not run their own transportation)? Here’s my guide to booking the Norway in a Nutshell trip on your own (written on my other travel blog).

A few great tours from Bergen to Flåm (and back):

I hope I have given you some great tips that will help you select your mode of transport while travelling from Bergen to Flam with this guide. Honestly, there are so many amazing things waiting for you in Flam, and I hope you will have an amazing time. If you find this post useful, bookmark it to read again later.

Questions about Norway in a Nutshell – Answered!

' data-src=

I will be in Oslo with another couple around June 6-8 or 6-9. We want to visit Bergen and Flam. We need to be in Stockholm on 13th. What is best way to go–from Oslo to Bergen and then Flam (my original thought) or from Oslo to Flam and then Bergen? I see there is a non-stop flight from Bergent to Stockholm on SAS that seems like a good option. Let me know your thoughts.

Can I hire you to assist us?

' data-src=

Hello Bill! Thank you for your questions and comments! Firstly, I am available for creating custom itineraries – you can reach out via email to get more info. But I have also created a lot of itineraries already, that may cover your needs. Browse them all here: https://fjordsandbeaches.gumroad.com/

To answer your questions, the best way to go from Oslo to Bergen is by plane (fastest) or train (most scenic). However, if you want to see Flåm, I would do this on the way! My suggestion would be to take the train from Oslo to Flåm, and continue by bus from there to Bergen (3 hours). I have a very specific itinerary for this route here (3 days): https://fjordsandbeaches.gumroad.com/l/oslo-bergen-3days?layout=profile 🙂

I hope this is helpful!

' data-src=

hello. your content is very helpful .we will be doing the norway in a nutshell and staying overnight in flam

our dates are 13-14th may this year. can you advise on how busy it may be around this time. we realise this is such a popular tour but are not to keen on fighting the crowds:)

many thanks. bron.

Hi Bron! I am glad to hear my blog is helpful 🙂 On those dates this year there are no scheduled cruise ships, so it shouldn’t be too busy! You can check the cruise arrivals here: https://www.flamport.no/arrival-list Of course, this could change. But generally, it is the cruise ships that give Flåm the “overcrowded” feeling, all though plenty of travellers arrive by car, train and bus too. All the best! 🙂

Traveling from Bergen to Flam? There are a few different ways of getting from one town to the other, and we’ve covered them all in this detailed guide on how to get from Bergen to Flam!

I’ve covered everything you need to know about car, train, bus, and boat travel, as well as the pros and cons of each way of traveling. On top of that, I’ve also included some tips on the best things to do in Flam and the area, so you’ll find all the info you need in one place. Read on the see the best ways of traveling from Bergen to Flam and the top things to do once you reach your destination!

Bergen To Flam: By Car

Bergen and Flam are some 170 kilometers away by road, and it takes about two and half hours to make the journey in a car. The two towns are connected with E16, Norway’s main road that connects Bergen to Oslo. It’s also the only mountain pass that’s rarely closed due to snow, so it should be possible to make this journey even in winter conditions.

The E16 is a tolled road, so you will need to pay a toll when driving from Bergen to Flam. The Norwegian toll system is not very intuitive, but the good news is that most car rental companies just add the costs of toll to your total bill. It’s best to check with the car company what their policy for tolls is, so you can avoid any fines.

Toll collection is automated in Norway and it’s payable with the AutoPASS system. Whenever you pass a toll collection point, a camera takes a photo of your car’s license plate. The registration number is then checked against the Norwegian Register of Motor Vehicles, and the invoice for the toll is sent to the car owner’s address.

Driving in Norway is a scenic experience, but it’s not recommended for everyone. You should have at least some experience driving in winter conditions before you get behind the wheel since certain parts of the country can have snow and ice on the roads even in the summer.

Additionally, you should know that street parking in Norway is mostly reserved for residents, and the fines for illegal parking are astronomical. You’ll need to park the car at one of the multi-story garages or public parking lots, which won’t be cheap at all. The good news is that there are a few parking lots in Flam that are free, and you can even stay parked overnight without any additional fees.

Bergen To Flam: By Train

The bad news is that there is no direct train from Bergen to Flam. The good news is that you just need to change trains at Myrdal, and you can continue to enjoy one of Norway’s most scenic train journeys. The ride from Myrdal to Flam is a journey along the Flam Railway and it’s regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. That’s why the train is the absolute best way of traveling between Bergen and Flam.

It’s about two hours from Bergen to Myrdal and then another hour from Myrdal to Flam. However, it’s worth noting that you might need to spend some time at Myrdal waiting for the connecting train. The exact prices of train tickets vary, but usually, it’s between 250 and 350 NOK ($30-40) for the ride from Bergen to Myrdal and about $70 for the ride from Myrdal to Flam. It’s very expensive for such a short train ride, but the price makes sense considering this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.

The Flam Railway is one of the steepest railways in the world, with a 5.5% incline for 80% of the journey. It passes through 20 tunnels, next to waterfalls, and runs through such beautiful scenery that the short, 60-minute ride is rarely enough for most people. The train even stops for a few minutes at Kjosfossen waterfall and there’s a viewing platform so you can get a closer look. Although it’s just one of many different waterfalls along the way, the 93-meter tall cascade is easily the highlight of the entire ride.

Bergen To Flam: By Boat

Traveling by boat is common in Norway and it’s a great way to see the country’s majestic fjords. You can travel from Bergen to Flam by ferry , and the scenic journey lasts for about six hours. There’s only one company that operates on this route (Norled) and the ferry rides are only available in the summer, between June 21 st and August 29 th .

The ferry departs from Strandkai Terminal in Bergen at 8 AM and it arrives in Flam at 1:25 PM. The same ferry departs Flam at 3:30 PM and is back in Bergen by 8:45 PM. One-way tickets are 950 NOK ($107) for adults and there’s a selection of discounted family tickets. Children under the age of four can ride the ferry for free and students pay about 50% less for the ferry tickets. Return tickets cost 1430 NOK ($160), so the ferry is actually one of the cheapest ways of traveling between Bergen and Flam. There’s a cafeteria on board so you don’t need to worry about snacks. Also, the tickets must be booked at least two days in advance.

Most of the ride is through Sognefjord, which is also known as The King of the Fjords. It is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway and the views from the boat are just magnificent. You’ll also get a glimpse of the spectacular Jostedal Glacier, along with gorgeous views of Norway’s changing landscapes.

Bergen To Flam: By Bus

The bus is the cheapest way of traveling between Bergen and Flam. The ride is still somewhat scenic, but nowhere near to what you experience on the train or ferry. If you’re just looking for an affordable way of traveling between the two towns, the bus is likely the best option for you.

The NW420 and NW162 buses cover this route. The NW420 travels between Bergen and Sogn with a total of 20 stops, one of which is in Flam. There’s only one bus per day between Bergen and Flam and the journey usually lasts for about three hours. Driving on your own is not that much faster, so the bus is also the second-fastest way of traveling from Bergen to Flam. The NW420 bus usually departs Bergen at around 3-3:30 PM, and the tickets are bout 365 NOK ($40).

The NW162 bus departs earlier in the morning, usually around 9 AM. It arrives in Flam sometime before noon, so it’s actually faster than the other bus by 10-15 minutes. It’s also slightly more expensive with tickets priced at 409 NOK (46$), but it’s not a big difference. This bus travels between Bergen and Lillehammer with several other stops along the way, including Flam.

Taking the bus is very similar to driving on your own, except you don’t need to pay for car rental or worry about tolls. The bus drives on the same road, so you get to experience the same spectacular views you would if you were behind the wheel.

Top Things To Do In Flam

Flam is a quaint village best known for the spectacular fjords and scenic train rides. But there’s certainly more to this charming village and here are some of the top things to do in Flam while you’re there!

Visit The Railway Museum

If it wasn’t for Flåmsbana, most people wouldn’t even know that this tiny village exists. The railway is incredibly important for the area, and it’s no surprise that Flam has a museum dedicated to its importance. Visit the Flam Railway Museum to hear about the initial construction of the railway and all the different challenges that needed to be overcome for the world’s steepest railway to exist.

You’ll get to hear stories about the people who built this railway from scratch and gain some insight into the entire process. Other exhibits in the museum include an extensive collection of videos, photographs, and other artifacts from the early days of Flåmsbana. There’s even an El 9 locomotive on display, as well as rail-inspection trolleys and a rather old electric shunting engine.

Stegastein Viewpoint

The Stegastein viewpoint is a non-skippable attraction even if you’re only in Flam for a few hours. You can drive to the viewpoint or you can take the bus – it’s a 30-minute ride and the tickets are rather cheap.

The viewpoint is a platform hanging 30 meters out from the mountain walls, and some 650 meters above the fjord. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the area, making you feel like you’re floating above the fjord. It’s a thrilling once-in-a-lifetime experience and possibly the absolute best thing to see in the area.

Take A Break At Ægir Microbrewery

The Ægir Microbrewery is a pub, restaurant, and café all in one, situated in a Viking barn. Everything about the place is top-notch from the beautiful décor to the amazing service. It’s the best locale in all of Flam, and a must-visit if you get hungry or thirsty while you’re in the village.

Everything in the brewery is Viking-themed, from the decorations to the foods on the menu. The food is hearty and delicious, but the most popular thing on the menu is the beer-tasting plank. Just be careful with the beer tasting if you need to drive afterward – although you get just a few sips of each beer, they’re strong enough to give you a nice buzz.

Go On A Fjord Safari

Flam village is one of the best bases for exploring the Fjords of Norway and a Fjord Safari is exactly what you need if you want to discover more of Norway’s magnificent nature. A boat tour is one of the most popular ways of seeing the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, but it’s also possible to go on hiking and bike tours. The latter two options are likely a dream come true for all outdoor lovers and adventurers!

The hiking tour takes you to Nærøyfjord, which is one of the two fjords that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The trail starts in Bleiklindi and it follows the Old Postal Road for about 5.5 kilometers to Styvi. It’s a relatively easy trail and the views along the ways are absolutely wonderful.

Fjord Safari adventures are not available during the winter, so keep that in mind.

Hike To Brekkefossen Nature Preserve

The Brekkefossen Nature Preserve is just a short hike outside Flam and it’s a great place to go to admire some spectacular views of the quaint town with the fjord in the background. It’s about a 20-minute hike from Flam to the viewpoint in the nature preserve, so you’ll get there in no time. It is a steep climb, but the terrain is not demanding so the hike is suitable for everyone, regardless of their skill level.

The nature preserve features a waterfall, scenic views, and farm animals. Goats and sheep are a common sight in Brekkefossen, so try not to disrupt them too much. It’s also worth noting that the nature preserve is a starting point for several other hikes, so you can continue exploring the wonderful nature around Flam for as long as you want!

Ride The Flamsbana

If you traveled from Bergen to Flam by train, you can skip this one. But if you opted to drive, take the bus or the ferry, then one of the first things you should see when you arrive in Flam is the railway. It’s a little over an hour for the return trip (Flam-Myrdal-Flam), and it’s easily the most popular tourist attraction in the area.

I won’t dwell too much on the train ride, since I covered it in detailed earlier. Suffice it to say that it’s not known as Norway’s most scenic train ride for no reason! Admire the changing scenery, step out of the train at Kjosfossen waterfall to take photos, and take in the views as you enjoy the gradual ascent to one of Norway’s highest train stations.

boat trip from bergen to flam

Bergen to Flåm and Sognefjord by Train, Bus and Boat

What could be better than traveling? Traveling to visit friends! We had a fantastic time visiting our friends in Bergen. Silje is an outstanding chef who indulged us with delish Norwegian cuisine, Øisten , a great storyteller, and Sigur is their adorable baby. They live in a real Norwegian wooden house with outstanding views.

We explored charming neighborhoods, walked through parks, and went out for drinks downtown till very late. Bergen is so up north that the sun sets at 11:30 PM! Since we had time only for one day trip, we decided to explore the fjords. Hence, we woke up early and took a train from Bergen to Flåm, returning late that day by boat through Sognefjord.

Are you planning your trip to Bergen and Sognefjord last minute?

Top hotels in bergen, magic hotel   kløverhuset – on top of a shopping center, det hanseatiske hotel – in bryggen, top hotels in flåm, fretheim hotel – in the center, flåmsbrygga hotel – by the port, top tours and experiences in the area, full day tour to sognefjord (from 224 eur), private tour to sognefjord, gudvangen, & flåm (from 783 eur), need insurance for norway, check out travel insurance rates for norway with our partner safetywing.

Though  Bergen  today is  Norway ’s second-largest city behind Oslo , it used to be the country’s largest city for centuries. Since the 14 th Century, it was a very important city in the Baltic Region as the foreign trading post of the influential Hanseatic League . To our delight, Bergen is one of the best places in Norway to visit on a bike .

The magnificent Bryggen at the end of the Vågen Bay is a testament to those glorious times (although the current buildings are from the 18 th Century). Finally, UNESCO included its historical area in its list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. Today, it is a modern city spread out between the seven mountains, home to 280 000 inhabitants.

Bergen - Bryggen

Main Sights

There are plenty of things to see and do in Bergen . Apart from Bryggen , we also visited the  Bergenhus Fortress  and spent hours getting lost around the numerous charming wooden houses. For people-watching, we headed to Torgallmenningen   Square and then to the fun and lively Fish Market  (Fisketorget).

As much as we loved the city, Bergen’s natural setting is what sets it apart. To fully enjoy the superb scenery, we took the Fløibanen funicular to the Fløyen Hill and got back to the city walking through a dense forest. We won’t forget those views and the fresh smell of plants!

Where to Stay in Bergen

Bergen has a plethora of great hotels all around the city. We love great views, so for us, the Magic Hotel   Kløverhuset  is the best choice. This lovely hotel is on top of a shopping center, thus the magnificent views of the bay and Bryggen.

If you want to stay around the historical Bryggen, the   Det Hanseatiske Hotel , housed in a 16th-Century building, is your best bet. If you plan on organizing day trips on your own, then staying near the train station makes perfect sense. In that case, the elegant Scandic Ørnen serves as a great base.

Bergen Norway - House in Kronstad

While visiting Bergen we discovered that Sognefjord , Norway’s largest fiord, is just around the corner. There was no chance we were going to miss this natural wonder. The fjord extends for more than 124 miles (200 km) deep inside the country, reaching three national parks: Jostedalsbreen, Breheimen, and Jotunheimen.

The ice melting from the climate changes that followed the Ice Age formed Sognefjord. As time went by, people settled along the fjords and started farming. Five of the oldest stave churches are in the area, including the oldest one, Urnes Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sognefjord - Views from the boat

Sognefjord bifurcates several times along its length. One of its main branches, the Aurlandsfjord , ends at the village of  Flåm , a regional tourist center. Roughly halfway between Sognefjord and Flåm, the fjord branches into its wildest and most scenic section. Called Nærøyfjord , it is another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tiny village of Flåm is home to 350 people and an equal number of cows (just kidding). Dramatic mountains and green valleys surround the town. Tourists have been going to Flam since the late 19 th Century. Today more than 450 000 people visit Flåm every year.

How to Get to Sognefjord from Bergen

Organized day trips from bergen to flåm and sognefjord.

We wanted to spend as much time as possible with our friends. Therefore, we decided to go on a day trip from Bergen to Flåm and Sognefjord. We booked a 12 hour day tour that included a train, a steep train, and a fancy boat cruise through the fjords. Though the train was quite crowded, we got to enjoy the views all through the journey.

However, you simply cannot move freely. All you have to do is follow instructions: go down here, stay a limited amount of time, and come back. At least we got 4 hours in Flåm to explore the area before we got back to Bergen on a cruise through Sognefjord. This tour is a brilliant option if you are short of time, like us. You can  book it here .

Bergen to Flåm by Train

You can travel from Bergen to Flåm on your own. To do so, take a regional train to Myrdal, where you have to change to a steep train to Flåm . The whole journey lasts from 3 to 3,5 hours. Next to the Kjosfossen station, you will spot the large  Kjosfossen Waterfall . You can book a combined ticket for both trains on the  Norwegian Railways website .

There are several daily trains connecting Bergen and Flåm. The first one leaves Bergen around 7 AM, while the last one departs from Flåm around 5 PM. Take note that if you book a return train ticket to Flåm, you won’t see Sognefjord at all, as the train travels inland far from the fjord. As you can see, it’s easy to travel around Norway by train .

Sognefjord - Kjosfossen waterfall

Bergen to Sognefjord and Flåm by Boat

To go from Bergen to Sognefjord and Flåm by boat, take the daily cruise through the fjords operated by Norled . It’s a modern boat with wide windows. Thus, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful views all along. The service is called Fjordcruise and operates between April 1 st and October 31 th .

The biggest downside of this Sognefjord cruise is its tight schedule. The boat leaves Bergen at 8 AM and reaches Flåm at 1:30 PM. On the way back, it leaves Flåm at 3:30 PM and arrives to Bergen at 9 PM. So, unless you plan to stay overnight in Flåm, you’ll only have 2 hours to spend there.

Sognefjord - boat cruise to Bergen

Sognefjord and Flåm by Train and Boat

The best way to visit Sognefjord is to take a train to Flåm and from there a boat to Bergen. Of course, you can also inverse your trip and take a boat to Flåm and then a train back to Bergen. Flåm is a beautiful place, but it gets pretty crowded during the day. Therefore, we suggest spending at least one night there.

Taking a train and a boat is the best way of visiting Flam as you’ll be able to see the fiords but also Norway’s country side. We’ve got great news for those of you wanting to save some money. You can also visit Flåm by bus. You can check timetables and prices, and book your tickets here .

Things to Do in Flåm

Be sure to spend some time in Flåm before taking the boat back. Or better still, spend the night! It is one of the  nicest places in Norway  and it just makes no sense to travel so far and miss the sights. It took us two hours to walk on local roads, through the woods, and across the stream, to get to see some of the most spectacular views ever.

The beautiful Brekkefossen waterfall  on the top of the hill rewarded our effort! Too bad we had to share our prize with other people! For a bit of history, visit its authentic  stave church from the late 17 th Century. If you have time, go on a cruise to Gudvangen through Nærøyfjord. The most impressive views are there.

Where to Stay in Flåm

As mentioned above, Flåm is a tiny village that gets overcrowded once the tourists arrive. However, everything changes in the afternoon when the masses go, and the quiet atmosphere returns. In the village itself, there are two hotels in the upper-middle category. The Fretheim Hotel   is a large 19th-Century mansion with a restaurant, a garden, and large comfortable rooms with views.

The  Flåmsbrygga Hotel   is more of a mountain style hotel. Their rooms have rustic decor, and some of them views to the fjord. The hotel has a restaurant-pub that serves food and homemade beer. You can also stay next to the fjord at the  Flåm Marina . This lovely establishment rents boats and fishing equipment.

Alternative Visits to Sognefjord

Though Flåm is the most popular place in the Sognefjord area, it’s not the only one. In fact, the city of  Sogndal is the main settlement on the shores of Sognefjord. In all honesty, the city doesn’t offer much. However, it is close to the nice village of  Kaupanger , to Norway’s oldest stave church  Urnes , and the impressive Glaciers of  Fjærland .

From Bergen, you can take a comfortable bus to Sognal, but the journey takes about 5 hours. You can also travel by a speed boat year-round, and the journey takes pretty much the same time. The boat makes several stops on the way. The best stops are in the villages of  Vikøyri  and Balestrand . In Vikøyri, you’ll find one of the most beautiful stave churches,  Hopperstad . On the other hand, Balestrand is known for its historic Kviknes Hotel.

Sognefjord - On the way to Flam

Where to Stay in Sognefjord

In Sogndal, you can stay in the  Best Western Laegreid  or  Quality Hotel Sogndal . Both are nice hotels in the city center. If you want to visit the Urnes church, the Walaker Hotel   is just across the fjord in the village of Solvorn. This fabulous hotel is Norway’s oldest family-run establishment dating back to 1640. They offer bikes, and the ferry to stave church is next door.

If you want to explore Balestrand, you should definitely stay at the Kviknes Hotel . This outstanding historic hotel used to host kings and queens, presidents, movie stars, and a bunch of artists. Please note that it only opens from April to September and on special occasions.

Finding the Best Sognefjord Cruise

Without a doubt, the best way to explore Sognefjord, and probably Norway, is on a cruise. You’ll be able to contemplate stunning landscapes from a different perspective. But as you can imagine, cruises are massive and full of tourists. You can either buy a ticket directly from  Norled  or book an organized tour as we did. There are also private tours .

Take note that there are several types of tours, but some of them include a cruise through the scenic  Nærøyfjord . Those of you looking for more of an adventure can take a speed boat  from Bergen to Sogndal or to any of the villages on the way. This year-round boat is the best way to meet local people.

Massive Tourism Can Be Avoided!

To be honest, we were both shocked that we had spent a small fortune to be surrounded by the masses. Don’t get us wrong, Sognefjord is one of the nicest places in Norway, just terribly overcrowded and overpriced (at least in summer). A month after our visit, we were in Argentina enjoying equally exceptional landscapes by ourselves, and for a fraction of the price.

We are not saying that you shouldn’t visit Sognefjord or Norway. Never! Just bear in mind that you won’t be alone or have the luxury of moving about freely. Believe us: there are always fantastic alternatives! So check out the tours we mention or go to Sognefjord on your own. Better still, once you are done with Norway, go ahead and visit Argentina!

Sognefjord - In Sognefjord you can't escape the crowds

Located on the west coast of Norway, the city of Bergen lies on the peninsular of Bergenhalvoyen and is often referred to as the City of The Seven Mountains. The city, which mainly lies on the shore of Byfjorden, is an internationally renowned centre for shipping, petroleum and for higher education. The Norwegian Fjords which surround the city have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the world's most spectacular natural tourist attractions. The Fjords are characterised by high, snow topped, steep mountains which surround them and are themselves deep and narrow. There is evidence that the area has been inhabited for centuries and today the area has a number of farms which some are by the fjords and some higher in the mountains. Bergen is Norway's busiest and largest port. There are regular ferry services departing from the port to Hirtshals in Denmark. Passenger catamarans also run from Bergen south to Haugesund and Stavanger and north to Sognefjord and Nordfjord. Bergen is also the southern terminus of Hurtigruten, the Coastal Express, which operates with daily services along the coast to Kirkenes.

You find some of you questions answered in post # 4

You book the ferry yourselves at https://www.norwaysbest.com/things-to-do/fjords/fjord-cruise-naeroyfjord/#booknow

The bus and train from Gudvangen to Bergen cannot be booked but you can prepay the train tickets from Voss on Vy. Follow the NiN timetable. Just pay the bus driver by card.

This is a (very) common question on the forum so do search using Date instead of default Relevance for sorting the results.

It’s important that you follow NIN’s timetable or you could risk being stranded some place because the last bus is gone. Happened to a lady at Voss. She had to stay the night at Voss, which wasn’t the plan.

So look at the link I gave

Thankyou Anne! I was looking at options to do it independently. But I will check the NIN website again

Thankyou Dyall. I did check previous responses but was unsure how to do the ferry booking to Gudvangen .

Thanks Anne. I understand now why you recommend NIN
